Emirates and AIDA Cruises renew their partnership for a further two seasons

Berlin/Dubai 5 March 2024: Solidifying Dubai’s place as a major maritime tourism hub, Emirates and AIDA Cruises have renewed their partnership for a further two seasons.

The renewed partnership was signed on the sidelines of the first day of ITB Berlin and is in line with Dubai’s efforts to significant grow its cruise capacity. Dubai continues to attract the biggest players in the industry through offering a seamlessly integrated maritime hub, with state-of-the-art handling facilities supported with unrivalled air connectivity.

Emirates will explore a number of opportunities with AIDA Cruises for joint marketing, operational alignment and strategic planning around flight schedules from across its network, in addition to enhanced transportation solutions between Dubai International Airport and Dubai Harbour Cruise Terminal.

The partnership will continue to focus on sharing relevant data and insights to improve service delivery, providing dedicated support teams for cruise passengers, and facilitating a smooth check-in process at Dubai Harbour Cruise Terminal. The airline will also dedicate capacity for the next two seasons to ensure continued momentum to meet the demand for cruise packages to Dubai.

The MoU was signed by Adnan Kazim, Deputy President and Chief Commercial Officer, Emirates Airline; and Felix Eichhorn, President of AIDA Cruises.

Adnan Kazim commented on the renewed partnership: “We’re proud of AIDA Cruises’ long-standing commitment to Dubai, when they were one of the first cruise liners to home port in 2006.  We are readying the business for another robust cruise season in Dubai, and through the support of partners like AIDA Cruises anchoring in our home city and hub, we’ll continue to strengthen Dubai’s position as an attractive gateway for winter cruising.”

"The Arabian Gulf is one of our most popular winter destinations due to its moderate flight times, pleasant summer temperatures and many hours of sunshine. Combined with the new state-of-the-art terminals at Dubai Harbour within easy reach of the city's attractions and excellent airport connectivity, our cooperation with Emirates will further enhance the attractiveness of this destination for our guests with tailor-made flight options," said Felix Eichhorn, President of AIDA Cruises .

AIDAprima has been operating to Dubai Harbour since 2021 and can accommodate up to 3,200 passengers. This season, passengers embarking and disembarking from Dubai can look forward to diverse itineraries that include destinations like Muscat, Doha, Sir Bani Yas and Abu Dhabi.

Dubai has been a first mover in joining up the entire travel and tourism ecosystem to facilitate hassle-free entry and visas for cruise passengers, seamless handling at ports which includes access to Emirates check-in desks at Dubai Harbour along with a host of other amenities dotted across the entire air and ground journey. Travellers have the added advantage of disembarking at one of the world’s most iconic tourism destinations, with landmarks and attractions that suit every taste, age and budget.

The 12 Emirates check-in counters in Dubai Harbour allow passengers who are disembarking from their cruise ships to fully check-in up to 4 hours before flight departure with the convenience of exploring Dubai without their luggage before heading directly to the airport and breezing past most formalities before their flight.

Last year, Emirates transported around 400,000 cruise passengers using Dubai cruise terminals. The city welcomed over 166 ships during the last cruise season, making it the region’s biggest port of embarkation and most popular call for cruise liners. The city expects an increase of 23% more cruise passengers for the upcoming season.

Dubai Harbour opens the 2022-23 cruise season with the arrival of AIDAcosma

cruise dubai aida

Today Dubai Harbour welcomed its first cruise ship the AIDAcosma from the German cruise line Aida, officially starting its 2022/23 cruise season. AIDAcosma will use Dubai as a homeport departing on 7-night Orinet voyages to Muscat, and Abu Dhabi. AIDAcosma is one of the largest cruise ships within the AIDA fleet and is a first-of-its-kind liquid natural gas (LNG) powered ship with a capacity of over 5,500 guests.

To mark the opening of the cruise season, DHCT Management along with public and private sector stakeholders will exchange plaques with the Ship Captain, a maritime tradition, to commemorate its maiden call.

Throughout the season, more than 300,000 cruise passengers are expected to arrive at the Dubai Harbour Cruise Terminal, marking accelerating growth for the cruise industry in the country.

“We are excited to return to Dubai Harbour – this time round with the maiden call of our youngest fleet member AIDAcosma. Through AIDAcosma, we are continuing on our path to green cruising and are elated to be collaborating with Dubai Harbour to do so. We are sure our guests will have a great time, as they set sail on a tour of the Orient this winter 2022/2023, specifically at Dubai Harbour with its line-up of entertaining events and activities, alongside the magnificent Dubai skyline,” Alexander Ewig, Senior Vice President Marketing & Sales at AIDA Cruises said:=.

As the owning-company and curator of Dubai Harbour, the diversified investment firm Shamal Holding is the driving force behind making Dubai Harbour an exceptional seafront district. The cruise terminals, which are part of the incredible Dubai Harbour development, showcase the spectacular and beautiful Dubai Harbour skyline to guests and offer a wide array of amenities and services for passengers and crew.

“Today is a very special day for us. This is not only the first time we have an LNG-powered cruise ship making its way to the city, but also a new cruise season that we look forward to with renewed excitement and anticipation. As we get ready to see full fleets get back in service, we believe there is great scope for extraordinary growth in the region. This includes more destinations, enhanced experiences and new types of cruise travellers. After the success of our last cruise season, we have continued to make investments across Dubai Harbour and Dubai Harbour Cruise Terminals and will also be extending our cruise season into the summer months of 2023 for the first time, with ships calling well into the month of June for overnight port stays for passenger turnaround. We look forward to continuing to play our part in welcoming more passengers and ships, as we aim to contribute to the region’s cruise tourism sector.” Abdulla Binhabtoor, Chief Portfolio Management Officer, Shamal Holding, the owner and curator of Dubai Harbour said.

“As Dubai continues to make waves across global tourism, the arrival of the first cruise travellers at Dubai Harbour for the new season will further reinforce Dubai’s position as a leading cruise tourism hub in line with the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai to make our city the world’s most sought-after and visited destination. The continuous efforts of Shamal Holding to enhance Dubai’s cruise tourism sector by developing world-class projects, infrastructure and facilities such as the Dubai Harbour is a testament to the tireless efforts of our valued stakeholders and partners to expand Dubai’s diverse destination proposition. As sustainability and decarbonisation are crucial elements of Dubai’s tourism strategy, we welcome the arrival of eco-friendly cruise ships like the Aida Cosma, further boosting our efforts to become a major sustainable tourism destination. We are also proud to be consistently included as a key port of call by the world’s largest and most popular ocean liners, highlighting Dubai’s global reputation as the ultimate cruise gateway to the region.” H.E. Issam Kazim, Chief Executive Officer of Dubai Corporation for Tourism and Commerce Marketing, commented.

The infrastructure at the Dubai Harbour Cruise Terminal comprises two terminal buildings that offer passengers and crew a safe, comfortable, and seamless experience. Designed to process over 3,250 passengers per hour, the highly efficient and modern terminals are located on a pier stretch of over 910 meters and can accommodate a complete passenger turnaround of two mega cruise ships simultaneously.

The purpose-built terminals ensure simplified and streamlined immigration, as well as customs screening processes, with the dedicated access routes for passengers and crew, facilitated by Seaport Passenger Boarding Bridges, allowing uninterrupted flow between the ship and the terminal.

The new Dubai Harbour Cruise Terminal is within a ‘stone’s throw’ of Dubai’s major tourist attractions, its two international airports, and offers enhanced facilities for passengers, according AIDA Cruises, the first cruise line to use the new terminal.

The fact that Dubai’s popular sights, beaches, landmarks and malls are close by to Dubai Harbour Cruise Terminal , coupled with easy access to airport, makes the city “an unbeatable argument” for Middle East fly-cruise holidays, according to AIDA.

The comment came as AIDA Cruises became the first cruise line to use the new terminal, which forms part of the massive Dubai Harbour development, a project that will create a tourism, lifestyle, retail and residential area the size of Monaco.

AIDAvita and the much larger AIDAprima docked at the Dubai Harbour Cruise Terminal on March 16th, 2021. AIDA Cruises is owned by Carnival Corporation, the largest cruise company in the world and one of the investors in the terminal.

Carnival has already confirmed that Dubai Harbour Cruise Terminal will be its new regional hub for the Middle East, used by all the ships of its nine brands that cruise to or from the Arabian Gulf annually.

AIDA, Costa, Princess, Seabourn, P&O, Cunard, and Holland America all cruise from Dubai each year, with AIDA and Costa both homeporting for a full winter season annually.

The 120,000 square metre Dubai Harbour Cruise Terminal will put Carnival-owned ships in the heart of the city’s tourism hotspots.

“The most popular sights, beautiful beaches and world-famous landmarks of the city, such as the 250-meter-high observation wheel Ain Dubai and the Burj Al Arab, are just a stone’s throw away,” says AIDA. “The two international airports are also very easy to reach.”

Between late November, 2021 and mid-April 2022, AIDAprima will return to Dubai to cruise a series of 7-night voyages in the Arabian Gulf.

She’ll stay overnight in Dubai on all of these cruises, giving guests the opportunity to discover the largest metropolis in the United Arab Emirates on various excursions.

“Pleasant summer temperatures in winter and a moderate flight time of almost six hours are further unbeatable arguments for a cruise to [Dubai],” AIDA Cruises said.

AIDA Cruises has been homeporting in the Middle East since 2006, with Dubai now ranked as one of the most popular cruise destinations for German vacationers in the winter months.

25 Nov, 2021

cruise dubai aida

- Cruise passengers arriving at Dubai Harbour are within easy reach from the city’s world-famous attractions such as Burj Al Arab, Bluewaters Island, and Palm Jumeirah - Dubai Harbour Cruise Terminal is close to both of Dubai’s international airports – a gateway to Dubai and international destinations - Dubai Harbour further enhances Dubai’s position as a leading global tourist destination, attracting visitors from all over the world Dubai Harbour, an extraordinary seafront district, today welcomes the arrival of its first cruise passengers comprising approximately 1,200 passengers and 600 crew members aboard the 252-metre-long Cruise Ship AIDAbella. Operated by AIDA Cruises, the maiden call of the AIDAbella at the Dubai Harbour Cruise Terminal marks the start of the cruise season at Dubai Harbour and the official debut of the region’s most modern and largest, standalone dedicated twin cruise terminal centre in the Eastern hemisphere, capable of the simultaneous handling of two of the largest cruise ships currently operating globally. As the owning-company and curator of Dubai Harbour, the diversified investment firm Shamal Holding is the driving force behind making Dubai Harbour an exceptional seafront district. Dubai’s 2021-2022 season, which commenced in October, is expected to welcome 126 ship calls and over 500,000 cruise visitors, contributing further to the momentum of Dubai’s tourism recovery. More than 150,000 passengers are forecast to visit Dubai Harbour Cruise Terminal in its first season. Located at the centre of modern Dubai, Dubai Harbour is within easy reach from the city’s key landmarks – including the Burj Al Arab, Ain Dubai, Bluewaters Island, and Palm Jumeirah, giving cruise passengers easy access to some of the world’s most iconic experiences. The cruise terminals, which are part of the incredible Dubai Harbour development, showcase the spectacular and beautiful Dubai harbour skyline to our guests and offer a wide array of amenities and services for passengers and crew – from ample seating areas to washrooms, currency exchange outlets, ATMs, cafes, retail outlets, Duty-Free, dedicated parking, taxi stands and much more. All facilities are wheelchair accessible and complimentary WIFI is enabled for passengers and crew to stay connected. Abdulla Binhabtoor, Chief Portfolio Management Officer, Shamal Holding commented, “Today marks a very special day for us, and we are excited to welcome the first cruise passengers to the Dubai Harbour Cruise Terminal. Not only does this mark the beginning of a new era for the cruising industry in the UAE, but it further elevates Dubai Harbour’s position as an extraordinary seafront district in the region.” Referencing its alignment with Dubai Tourism Strategy, Binhabtoor explained that “Along with the launch of Expo 2020 Dubai this year, the opening of the cruise terminal represents a significant milestone in realising Dubai’s destiny to become the most visited city in the world. However, it is not only a fantastic lifestyle leisure destination for cruise passengers from every corner of the world – it is a natural gateway to the many wonders that Dubai has to offer and other international destinations. We look forward to working with partners across the trade and tourism ecosystem to advance and play a leading role in delivering the objectives of Dubai’s Tourism Strategy.” Issam Kazim, Chief Executive Officer of Dubai Corporation for Tourism and Commerce Marketing, commented, “Under the visionary leadership and guidance of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, we have successfully navigated our way out of the unprecedented global challenge and have set our sights on leveraging the momentum that is accelerating across sectors including tourism to position Dubai as the world’s most preferred and visited destination. The continued success of our cruise business depends on a number of key factors such as partnerships with more and more leading cruise lines, collaboration with major Dubai entities such as Shamal Holding and the availability of world-class infrastructure and facilities like the Dubai Harbour Cruise Terminal. With the new cruise season in full swing, we are proud to be consistently included as a key port of call by the world’s largest and most popular ocean liners, as evidenced by the arrival of AIDAbella and the first passengers to the new Dubai Harbour Cruise Terminal, further reinforcing Dubai’s global reputation as the ultimate cruise gateway to the region.” The infrastructure at the Dubai Harbour Cruise Terminal comprises two terminal buildings that offer passengers and crew a safe, comfortable, and seamless experience. Designed to process over 3,250 passengers per hour, the highly efficient and modern terminals are located on a pier stretch of over 910 meters and can accommodate a complete passenger turnaround of two mega cruise ships simultaneously. The purpose-built terminals ensure simplified and streamlined immigration and customs screening processes, and the dedicated access routes for passengers and crew, facilitated by Seaport Passenger Boarding Bridges, allow uninterrupted flow between the ship and the terminal. “We are excited and proud to bring AIDAbella, the ninth ship back into service, offering our guests voyages in the Orient in winter 2021/2022 and specifically to Dubai Harbour Cruise Terminal located in this wonderful seafront district nestled within the Dubai Harbour development and the Palm Jumeirah and in close proximity to Dubai landmark tourist attractions.  A special highlight of this year’s cruise season is the World EXPO 2020,” said Felix Eichhorn, President of AIDA Cruises. AIDA Cruises is the market leader in the German-speaking cruise market and currently operates one of the most modern fleets in the world with 13 cruise ships, including the first ever LNG propulsion cruise ship built. AIDA Cruises is one out of the nine world leading cruise lines forming part of Carnival Corporation & plc, one of the world’s largest leisure travel companies.

Port Dubai cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

Dubai is a Persian Gulf (Arabian Sea) cruise port, the UAE's largest city (population around 3,4 million) and Emirate of Dubai's capital. Since 2020, the city has two cruise ports with 3 passenger terminals - two Terminals in Port Rashid (Mina Rashid, operational since 1972) and two new (2020-opened) in Dubai Harbour (Palm Island Cruise Terminals).

Dubai is the world's only city with cruise ports and terminals operated by a government (UAE's Department of Tourism). This provides extra attention to every passenger, along with enhanced travel experiences including certified tour guides, a swift entry system (no visa issues), premium transportation.

Approx 35 km (22 mi) to the southwest of Dubai is Mina Jebel Ali - currently ranked the world's 9th-largest by annual cargo volumes (~14 million TEU-containers), as well as the world's largest artificial harbor (1979-opened). Port Jebel Ali (locode AEJEA) is operated by DP World and currently has 67 berths and land area 135 km2 (52 mi2) which includes the Free Zone (Middle East's largest) and the National Industries Park (sized 21 km2 / 8 mi2, houses manufacturing and processing facilities). Jebel Ali is one of the Maritime Silk Road that links China with Europe via India and the Suez Canal . Due to the harbour's depth and facilities' sizes, Jebel Ali is also the most visited by US Navi vessels foreign port, including by aircraft carriers and other large battleships.

Jebel Ali and Dubai's Port Rashid are interlinked via a highway.

PCFC (Ports, Customs & Free Zone Corporation) is a Dubai Government organisation (2001-established) under which umbrella work several local companies and entities - Dubai Customs, JAFZA (Jebel Ali Free Zone), Dubai Ports Authority, Dubai Development Authority (Licensing & Monitoring), Dubai Maritime City Authority.

DP World (2005-founded) is a holding formed by merging Dubai Ports International and Dubai Ports Authority. DP World (currently ranked the world's largest cargo port operator) specializes in maritime services, supply chain cargo logistics, and management of port terminals and free trade zones.

Dubai cruise port

At Dubai's cruise port Mina Rashid is currently berthed/permanently moored "RMS Queen Elizabeth 2" - the famous Cunard ocean liner (1969-built, IMO 6725418).

  • In November 2008 the QM2 boat was retired and sold to Istithmar (subsidiary of Dubai World/investment company) with plans to be converted into a 500-room hotel ship with mooring at Palm Jumeirah.
  • The project was postponed and the boat remained docked at Mina Rashid.
  • The refurbishment started in March 2017 and was completed in April 2018.
  • The QM2 ship was renamed "Float Dubai" (215-room hotel ship) and its grand opening was held on October 14, 2021.

Rashid Port's cruise ship schedule shows vessels with voyages visiting Muscat , Bahrain , Fujairah , Abu Dhabi , ports in India, East Asia and Australia (on relocation voyages). Dubai also amazes tourists with all its almost unlimited city tour possibilities.

Port Mina Rashid's proximity to Dubai Airport and the downtown makes it an ideal choice as cruise ship tourists can get easy access to all the city's attractions. The cruise port has quay wall length 2,3 km (1,43 mi) and berthing capacity to handle 7 mega-cruise liners (max 25,000 passengers) simultaneously in a day.

In 2016, Dubai and other UAE cities introduced a new (multi-entry) visa system allowing cruise passengers to visit various UAE tour destinations with 1 permit. Previously, UAE visas were only for tourists arriving and leaving the country on a cruise ship. The new multiple-entry visas allow tourists to fly to Dubai Airport, embark on cruise vessels (Mina Rashid) and travel to Abu Dhabi and other Persian Gulf ports with a single visa - rather than obtaining 2 or 3 separate visas. The new UAE visas are also cheaper (AUD 59) in comparison to Dubai's 96-hours visa (AUD 44).

In January 2017 was signed an exclusive contract between the city's RTA (Roads and Transport Authority) and DP World (Mina Rashid terminals' owner and operator). By this deal are provided taxi services for passenger transportation between the city and the new terminal Hamdan bin Mohammed at Port Rashid. RTA's services include both taxis and VIP limousines to greet disembarking cruise ship tourists. The taxi corporation has 5000+ cabs. Its 2015 annual report showed 47+ million taxi trips serving ~94 million customers.

In the period 2014-2017, the port handled around 1,9 million cruise tourists via 489 vessels. During Port's first season (2013-14) were handled 93 calls and 320,000 passengers.

During season 2016-2017 (October through July), Port Rashid had scheduled 156 cruise ship visits and handled 625,000 passengers. This was a 15% increase over season 2015-16 (134 ship calls). The number of disembarking passengers was over 625,000 (18% increase over season 2015-16). For comparison, during 2006-2007, the cruise port was visited by around 105,000 passengers. The steady annual growth of 16-18% is supported by an increasing number of visitors from India. Their number grew by 25% (2015-2016) and by 30% (2017-2018). Currently, India is the cruise port's 14th source country (following countries like Germany, Italy, UK, USA).

During season 2017-18, the port had as clients 23 cruise companies , of which 6 used it as homeport (for roundtrips). The number included the newcomers NCL-Norwegian and Thomson-Marella . In 2017-2018, Celestyal Cruises for the first time ever started offering roundtrip 3-night / 4-day Arabian Gulf mini-cruises with the ship Celestyal Nefeli .

To boost berth bookings, for October (2018) and April (2019), DP World reduced cruise port charges by 50%. During season 2018-19, Port Dubai handled ~725,000 cruise ship tourists, and ~825,000 in season 2019-2020.

In 2019, in Dubai Royal Caribbean introduced the world's most expensive cruise shore excursion. Part of RCI's "Cruise Arabia and Africa" program, the new tour is offered on 7-day Arabian Gulf itineraries starting December 2019. The cruise excursion's cost is AED 122,000 (USD 33,000) per person. The cruisetour package is inclusive of a shopping trip (with personal shopper and photo session at Dubai Mall) and a visit to Rose Arbaji Centre (with 3-course meal and 3-hour spa treatments). The exclusive tour was first offered on Jewel of the Seas (homeported in Dubai in 2019-2020).

In late-November 2020, DP World's Port Mina Rashid won again the title "World's Leading Cruise Port" at WTA-World Travel Awards 2020. The port has received this prestigious award for 13 successive years - since 2008.

On May 16, 2021, the AIDA ships AIDAprima and AIDAvita became the first vessels to dock at the new DHCT-Dubai Harbor Cruise Terminal (located between Bluewaters Island and Palm Jumeirah Island).

Following the COVID crisis, during season 2021-2022, Port Dubai received 98 cruise ship calls and 338697 tourists (passengers plus crew), and expected in season 2022-23 0,9+ million tourists.

On September 18, 2017, DP World Ltd announced that the company entered into agreements to purchase Maritime World LLC (sole owner of Dubai Maritime City) for USD 180 million. DP World also acquired Drydocks World LLC for USD 225M or made a total capital injection into Dubai port of USD 405M.

Dubai Maritime City is a world-class facility and industrial business zone in a prime location (adjacent to the Mina Rashid port). Maritime City's main business is its commercial and industrial park (sized 2,3 km2 / 1 mi2) located on an artificial peninsula. The park provides Economic Zones World additional land as an alternative to the congested Jebel Ali Free Zone (located at the city's far western end).

Drydocks World is a leading company specializing in ship repairs and operating the Middle East's largest shiprepair yard. The shipyard also has capabilities for newbuilds and vessel conversions. Drydocks were integrated into P&O Maritime - DP World's fully-owned maritime services subsidiary company.

In May 2018, Carnival Corporation and Meraas (holding company) signed a partnership deal for "Dubai Harbour Cruise Terminal"/DHCT. Starting late 2020, the facility became a homeport and transit destination for Carnival Corporation ships in the region. Carnival offers roundtrips and relocation voyages from Dubai to attract passengers from India and China. Read more in the port's "Terminal" section.

In July 2018, DP World and Zhejiang China Commodities City Group signed an agreement to construct Traders Market (build-up area 3 km2) at Jebel Ali Port Free Zone. The new facility is in Jafza South (adjacent to Dubai Expo 2020) and is divided by trade sectors (including household goods, building materials, foods-beverages, cosmetics-healthcare, energy-power, engineering-technology).

  • The partnership deal followed an agreement signed in 2018 between DP World and ZPG (Zhejiang Seaport Investment and Operation Group) for a warehouse in Yiwu (the world's largest wholesale market for small commodities) with cargoes destined for Dubai and the Middle East.
  • Both projects will boost the UAE-China trade by offering integrated logistics, warehousing, customs clearance facilities, trade licenses. Jebel Ali Port Free Zone provides access to over 2 billion people regional market and DP World's global network of 80+ cargo terminals, enabling trade in countries with over 50% of the global GDP.

In 2017, China was ranked Dubai's number one trading partner, with total annual trade for FY2017 AED 176,5 billion (USD 48 billion).

Port Rashid (aka Mina Rashid)

Dubai's Mina Rashid port is an artificially made commercial seaport opened in 1972. In 1978, it was expanded to 35 berths (mostly used by container ships). The port is equipped with 9 gantry cranes (cargo capacity 1,500,000 TEUs). Here dock general cargo and RoRo vessels, cruise ships and luxury yachts.

Port Dubai, along with its cruise terminal also has a cargo ship terminal (Dubai Maritime City) and dry dock facilities (Dubai Drydocks) for marine vessel refurbishments and repairs. The cruise port is accessible the whole year round - 24/7, 365 days a year.

In 2019 was inaugurated the Dubai Ferry service linking downtown Al Wajeha Al Maeyah Marine Transport Station (near Dubai Mall / one of the world's largest and most-visited retail shopping destinations) with Dubai Marina Mall (owned by Emaar Malls, subsidiary of Emaar Properties). Dubai Harbour's two terminals are with berthing capacity 3 mid-sized ships (simultaneously) and 13,200 passengers (at a time). The project was via partnership with Shamal Holding LLC (2016-founded, Dubai-based Investment company with 8 subsidiaries).

Dubai Harbour is linked with the city's transport network (directly connected with its road grid and monorail system).

The new facility was officially inaugurated on December 17, 2021, following the arrival of its first cruise ships - Costa Firenze and AIDAbella . The special ceremony was attended by Abdulla Binhabtoor (Shamal Holding's CPO) and Carnival Corporation top-rank executives, including Giora Israel (SVP Global Ports & Destinations Development), Torben Seidenschnur (Costa Group's Director CEO Office & Strategic Development), Michael Thamm (Costa Group's and Carnival Asia's CEO), Felix Eichhorn (AIDA's President), Mario Zanetti (Costa's President).

Dubai Marina, like the cruise terminals, is one of the city's architectural landmarks, with contemporary-designed facilities housing brokerage and maritime insurance companies, crews, ship chandlers, premium retail shops, food and beverage outlets.

(NEW) Mina Rashid Cruise Terminal

Mina Rashid Cruise Terminal has 7 berths, which means it can handle 7 large-sized vessels (total passenger capacity 25,000) simultaneously. The terminal was renovated in 2010 and all cargo vessels were moved to the Jebel Ali Port. Port Rashid remained only a terminal for cruise ships. It can handle simultaneously up to 4 vessels. Cruise Terminal 3 is the largest facility (sized 125,000 m2), with capacity 14,000 passengers.

The building is in old Arabic style. Dubai Cruise Port terminal offers facilities like ATM machines, a post office, duty-free, an information center, souvenir shops, internet access, currency exchange, business center, coffee shop. Each hour, tourists can use City Center and Mercato Mall free shuttles.

Hamdan bin Mohammed Cruise Terminal (Port Rashid)

Dubai's new cruise ship terminal Hamdan bin Mohammed is located at Port Rashid (passenger and cargo port). The complex is considered one of the world's top 5 luxury cruise ports to dock at.

The new terminal was inaugurated in 2015. It is the world’s largest covered cruise facility with a daily passenger capacity of 14,000. For the period 2015-2020, the Hamdan bin Mohammed terminal's business grew 55%. Top daily performances were reported in 2015 (4 liners with ~20,000 passengers+crew), 2017 (5 liners with ~24,000 passengers+crew), 2019 (6 liners with ~35,000 passengers+crew).

Annually, 0,5+ million cruise ship tourists visit Dubai City via Port Rashid's terminals. The complex has as facilities coffee bar lounge, mini-mart, deli (lunch restaurant), premium shops (souvenirs, watches, jewellery, electronics), post office, business center, currency exchange office, ATMs, concierge tour services (to assist day tours in Dubai City). Among the services offered at the terminal are free Internet (and Wi-Fi) and 2 free of charge shopping shuttle buses (1 to Mercato Mall, 1 to City Center Drive) leaving from the terminal's station each hour.

(NEWEST/Carnival) Dubai Harbour Cruise Terminal

DHCT-Dubai Harbour Cruise Terminal is a new port development project which started in January 2017 and was completed in 2021. Among the attractions that the new complex features are a new building (total area 150,000 ft2 / 13,935 m2, max passenger capacity 6000) and Dubai Lighthouse (height 4380 ft / 135 m) housing a luxury hotel and featuring an observation deck.

This is Dubai's newest (second) cruise terminal facility for which construction was contracted Meraas (holding company, subsidiary of Dubai Holding/owned by the country's ruler/Sheikh). This way, the port became the world's first ever to build 2 new terminals simultaneously, with combined annual capacity 1,2 million passengers. As a location, Dubai Harbour connects some of the city's most famous neighborhoods.

Dubai Harbour is on King Salman Str, between JBR Walk (shopping / dining promenade) and Palm Jumeirah (the famous man-made archipelago). The new complex covers a total area of ~1,9 km2 (0,72 mi2). The project included the cruise port terminal, a large shopping mall (0,33 km2 / 0,13 mi2), a yacht marina (capacity 1400 berths), 3x helipads, an events arena, as well as residential and office buildings, hotels and shops.

Dubai Lighthouse's facade is used as a screen for HD video projections and light shows. The residential complex includes both high and low buildings, as well as waterfront houses and villas, numerous retail shops, cafes and restaurants.

Construction works started in May 2018 after Meraas and Carnival Corporation signed an agreement for partnership, including port development and terminal management. The 186-hectares (1,9 km2 / 0,7 mi2) land development project was officially approved in January 2017 by Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum (Ruler of Dubai).

In July 2019 was contracted ASGC Group (UAE-based and Dubai's largest construction company) to build the new Dubai Cruise Terminal (Meraas's real estate complex) located between Bluewaters and Palm Jumeirah (Dubai Harbour). ASGC will conduct all construction works (for both main terminal buildings), the 1-km long quay (docking area), also will implement all associated fit-out and external works and will install buildings' fixtures, fittings and equipment. Upon completion, the new terminal will have total floor area 2,7 hectares and daily passenger capacity of 15000.

Dubai Ferry Terminal

All sea connections between the city and the other UAE port cities are served by Mina Rashid Ferry Terminal. It is adjacent to the cruise ship terminal. Ferries dock in the Coastal Berth area. Dubai's Ferry Terminal (like all cruise terminals) is owned by DP World. Among the modern facilities are luggage belts, separate arrival/departure gates, security (police), UAE Customs office. The Ferry Terminal handles around 20,000 passengers per year.

Adjacent to Port Rashid are Dubai Drydocks and Dubai Maritime City. However, there's a plan all cargoship operations to be moved to Jebel Ali Port (by March 2018) leaving Port Rashid as a dedicated cruiseship terminal. The plan also included part of the port to be reclaimed by Nakheel (Dubai real-estate developer) to create an urban waterfront complex housing over 200,000 residents.

In 2019 was inaugurated the Dubai Ferry service linking downtown's Al Wajeha Al Maeyah Marine Transport Station near Dubai Mall (one of the world's largest and most-visited retail shopping destinations) with Dubai Marina Mall (owned by Emaar Malls, subsidiary of Emaar Properties). The ferry crossing time is ~80 min (one-way), with complimentary shuttle service provided to Dubai Mall and back. Tickets are priced AED 68,25 (USD 18,6) per adult and AED 52,5 (USD 14,3) for kids 5-12 years old.

AIDA Adjusts Winter 2024; Announces Africa Sailings

  • April 17, 2024

AIDAprima

Due to the ongoing tense security situation in various regions of the Middle East, AIDA Cruises announced it will be adjusting the fall itineraries of the AIDAprima and AIDAstella, according to a Facebook update.

The two ships will not transit through the Red Sea, but rather cruise the longer route around Africa. This requires more extensive changes and several trip cancellations, the company announced.

“In the interests of the safety of our guests and crew, the necessary adjustments to sailing routes are the only responsible option for us. We thank you for your understanding and trust,” the company said in a statement.

The following fall/winter 2024 cruises have been canceled:

  • AIDAprima: “From Hamburg to Barcelona” on October 26th, 2024
  • AIDAprima: “From Hamburg to Mallorca 1” on October 26th, 2024
  • AIDAprima: “From Lisbon to Mallorca” on November 3rd, 2024

Also available from April 29, 2024:

  • “Globe Traveler Canary Islands, South Africa and Mauritius” from Hamburg/to Dubai or Abu Dhabi onboard the AIDAprima from October 26th, 2024 (41, 42 or 43 days)
  • 22 days “From Hamburg via the Canary Islands to Cape Town” on the AIDAprima from October 26, 2024
  • 20 days “From Mallorca via Namibia to Cape Town” on the AIDAstella from October 20, 2024
  • AIDAprima: “Orient from Dubai 2” on November 29, 2024
  • AIDAprima: “Orient from Dubai 1” on November 30, 2024
  • AIDAprima: “Big Orient trip from Dubai” on November 30, 2024
  • AIDAprima: “Orient from Abu Dhabi” on December 1, 2024

The cruise line added that it will reimburse guests for the previously made payments (except for the travel cancellation insurance) as well as for services already booked on myAIDA in accordance with the payment method originally chosen.

As a thank you for a new booking, AIDA guests will receive a voucher. It can be redeemed until December 31, 2024, regardless of when the new trip starts.

In addition to adjusted itineraries, AIDA also announced new cruises to Africa, bookable from April 29, 2024, with further details to be announced soon.

Heart-stirring moment pregnant Disney cruise passenger is airlifted off ship

A US Coast Guard MH-60T Jayhawk helicopter safely airlifted an American woman experiencing health complications aboard the Disney Fantasy cruise ship

A pregnant woman experiencing health complications aboard the Disney Fantasy cruise ship was airlifted in a dramatic rescue by the US Coast Guard.

The passenger connected to air suspension gear dangled mid-air above the cruise near Puerto Rico as a helicopter hoisted her up.

Drone footage shared by the US Coast Guard showed its MH-60T Jayhawk helicopter hovering near the ship and a single rescuer being lowered down by rope and landing on both feet at the front of the massive vessel.

More than 10 ship crew members, some wearing bright orange vests, were then recorded carrying the passenger on a portable stretcher and laying her down at the front of the ship.

A Coast Guard helicopter carried out the medical rescue in the Atlantic Ocean about 180 miles northwest of Aguadilla, Puerto Rico

The Coast Guard member prepared a rescue basket and secured the woman still on the stretcher, then signaled to the chopper above. She was lifted while remaining in horizontal position and taken into the aircraft safely by Coast Guard members on Monday morning. The cruise ship doctor was also taken along with her.

‘Our crew was able to quickly, safely, and efficiently execute a long-range MEDEVAC for the patient to receive the higher level of care she required,’ stated Lt Cmdr Todd Stephens on Tuesday.

‘This case demonstrates the value of good crew resource management and the capabilities of our Jayhawk helicopter.’

The patient was a 35-year-old American citizen who required greater medical care ashore, stated the Coast Guard.

Cruise crew took the woman on a portable stretcher to the front of the ship

Disney Fantasy crew contacted watchstanders in San Juan requesting a medical evacuation as the vessel was in the Atlantic Ocean about 180 miles northwest of Aguadilla. A chopper was deployed from Miami.

The woman was taken to Fernando Luis Ribas Dominicci Airport in San Juan and transported to the nearby Centro Medico hospital.

‘We are glad everything came together to help this passenger,’ stated Ensign Michael Riccio of the Coast Guard’s San Juan sector.

‘The competency displayed by the Disney Fantasy crew and the Coast Guard personnel and units involved made all the difference.’
