Girl With The Passport

1 Day in Naples Italy Itinerary for 2024: Amazing Expert’s Guide

By: Author Girl with the Passport

Posted on Last updated: November 26, 2023

Categories Europe

Welcome to the vibrant and captivating city of Naples, where history, culture, and mouthwatering cuisine come together to create an unforgettable experience during this 1 day in Naples Italy itinerary .

Situated in the heart of Italy’s Campania region, Naples is a treasure trove of art, architecture, and amazing traditions that will leave you spellbound during your 24 hours in Naples .

Sure, it may seem a bit rough around the edges (aka I DEFFO heard gunshots when I was here for New Year’s one year) when compared to northern siblings like Florence and Milan .

But, don’t let that deter you. I loved wandering through these quaint streets and seeing all the nonnas hanging up their laundry when I spent one day in Naples .

I have since been back many times and can never resist spending some time in this enchanting city.

So, if you’re game for some adventure then this metropolis will surprise you in ways that you never expected during your Naples 1 day itinerary .

Yes, many people fly through Naples on their way to Pompeii or the Amalfi Coast , spending a night or two without ever really experiencing the city.

But, that’s like eating a pizza without the cheese – you’re missing out on all the good stuff!

From being a major player on the European stage for over a thousand years to enduring the most intense WWII bombings in Italy, Naples has lots of stories to tell.

So, if you’re ready for an unforgettable day in Naples Italy then get ready to walk through historic castles, marvel at waterfront views, explore abandoned catacombs, and, indulge in classic Napoli pizza.

#1 🏆 PICK FOR THE BEST TOUR WITH ONE DAY IN NAPLES ITALY

If you only have 24 hours in Naples Italy 🇮🇹 then I personally recommend this Naples Downtown Tour. I loved ❤️ the skip-the-line access to the Veiled Christ Statue. The price 💰 is also awesome, the tour is well-reviewed, and it’s only 2.5 hours long – making it perfecto for a short trip to Naples.

Best Places to Stay in Naples, Italy

A view of the colorful homes and narrow streets that line the Spanish Quarter in naples. It is a must-see during your 1 day in Naples Italy itinerary.

Seeing as you only have 1 day in Naples Italy, having a centrally located hotel is a must. Here’s exactly where to stay in Naples if you want to quickly and easily enjoy the top landmarks in Naples.

  • Hotel Il Convento (budget) – This well-priced hotel has a mint location in the historic center. It’s also in an atmospheric old building with a homey vibe. Most rooms come with a balcony and a KILLER breakfast too.
  • Relais Della Porta (mid-range) – Sleeping in Relais Della Porta is like sleeping in a palazzo. Well, it used to be one so the fancier rooms are adorned with frescoes that look like something from the Sistine Chapel. There are also lots of historic details in standard rooms and communal areas too.
  • Grand Hotel Vesuvio (luxury) – The 5-star Grand Hotel Vesuvio is located on the Lungomare and Features views of the Gulf of Naples and Vesuvius. It has all the trimmings of a luxury hotel including a pool and rooftop bar.

Tips for Visiting Naples in 1 Day

I’ve been to Naples many, many times. So, I want to share all of my secret insider tips with you. This way you can enjoy your one day in Naples, Italy, itinerary like a local, not a tourist.

  • Napoli is a shock to the senses. It’s far more chaotic than Rome , but that’s where its charm comes from. Go with an open mind and you’re sure to be captivated.
  • Naples is quietest in the morning but the tiny streets fill up with people by lunchtime. Start as early as you can because with 24 hours in Naples, the early bird gets the sfogliatella (see what I did there?).
  • Note that museums in Naples may be closed on certain days of the week (usually Tuesday/Wednesday). So, always check the latest times on Google Maps and official websites before you visit.
  • Churches tend not to be open all day long. They usually close for a few hours in the middle of the day and then open up again later.
  • Pickpockets tend to hang around the busiest parts of the city. So, when enjoying all of the best things to do in Naples, keep an eye on your valuables.
  • On the whole, Naples is walkable. Stick to this day in Naples itinerary and public transportation can be avoided as much as possible.
  • If you are spending more than one day in Naples, you might want to buy the City Pass Ticket . It gets you into a bunch of attractions on this itinerary and includes three days of public transportation.
  • 1 day in Naples is not enough to visit the historic center and Pompeii. You’ll need a second in order to take a day trip to Pompeii.

How to Get Around Naples, Italy, in One Day

Some of the colorful homes that you'll find in the Spanish Quarter of Naples before you set out on the best Amalfi Coast tours from Naples.

Firstly, this 1 day in Naples itinerary is basically me retracing my footsteps from numerous trips. So, you can totally handle the route yourself if you follow the steps.

Like many European cities, Naples is rad due to its walkability. I mean, it’s a huge city but fortunately, the key sights are central enough that they can be visited on foot.

However, if you need to go further afield, Naples has a metro and bus service. Just download Google Maps or Citymapper to navigate the city.

Additionally, Uber works in Naples. However, you’ll find the European taxi-hailing app, Free Now, is far more reliable. And SIXT works by connecting you with local taxi companies in Naples.

Basically, download all three, and you’ll be more than covered during your 24 hours in Naples, Italy. Yeah, I actually don’t think I used a motorized vehicle once the last time I was in Naples.

But it was a lot my like 6th time there so I was just kind of chillin’.

Anyway, getting around via Naples walking tours is a cool way to gain additional insight into the history and culture of Naples. Plus, they are basically designed for travelers who only have a day in Naples Italy.

In fact, this Downtown Naples tour and Veiled Christ entry will help you maximize your time in the city since you’ll see tons of top Naples attractions in a short amount of time.

1 Day in Naples Italy, Itinerary

Start your day in piazza del gesù nuovo.

Large carved column with a statue on the top that sits in the center of Naples in in Piazza del Gesù Nuovo. It is a must-see during your 24 hours in Naples.

You’ll start your one day in Naples itinerary in one of the prettiest public squares in Italy.

See, Piazza del Gesù Nuovo – which means New Jesus – is right in the heart of the Centro Storicio, or the historic center of Naples. In fact, it’s home to two of the city’s most iconic churches.

See, Gesù Nuovo Church (Chiesa del Gesù Nuovo) is easy to overlook. It’s a Jesuit church with an exterior made out of pyramids that were typical of the Venetian Renaissance.

However, they were very uncommon in the south and that’s what makes this place so unique.

In contrast, the interiors are heavily ornamented with frescoes galore and a grandiose main altar.

It’s free to visit and you’d be mad to miss the chance to go inside.

Local Tip: Gesù Nuovo is one of the churches that closes in the afternoon. Arrive around 9:00 am to avoid disappointment.

Amount of Time Needed: 20 minutes

Swing by the Monumental Complex of Santa Chiara

The Monumental Complex of Santa Chiara features stunning columns that are made up up of tiles that look like green leaves with yellow flowers. In the middle of the two columns you have a seat with a tiled mosaic of a scene in Naples. So, this garden is a must-see during your 1 day in Naples Italy itinerary.

Hold your horses. Before leaving Gesù Nuovo, you should swing by the Monumental Complex of Santa Chiara (Complesso Monumentale di Santa Chiara).

This includes a Gothic church and monastery plus a cloistered garden. It’s massive, so basically like a mini citadel in the heart of Naples.

But, really, the garden is the star of the show. I took a ton of photos here and marveled at the colorful tiled columns and fragrant trees.

Note, it’s free to visit the church but the monastery has a small fee. And, I’d say this is one of the best Naples landmarks that is worth spending a few extra euros on.

Yeah, it’s so peaceful and calming. Plus, it’s like the ONLY place with a garden landscaped in such a way.

It’s popular so make sure you’re here when it opens at 9:30 am on the dot (or 10:00 am on Sundays).

Amount of Time Needed: About an hour

Walk Down Spaccanapoli

So, you may experience a bit of a culture shock after the serenity of the monastery.

But, Spaccanapoli is a collection of several famous streets that cut right through the historic center of the city. In fact, the name literally means “Naples splitter.”

Furthermore, it runs through the Piazza del Gesù Nuovo so you’re basically on the road already.

Now, following Spaccanapoli eastwards brings you to one of the most energetic regions of Naples.

Spaccanapoli and the side streets that branch off either side are lined with gift stores, pizza places, tiny museums, and street art aplenty.

If you’re a soccer fan, this is where you’ll find Maradona murals and tributes. You could even sign up for a dedicated Maradona walking tour in Naples .

This isn’t so feasible with only 1 day in Naples but you could always scratch a couple of traditional sights off your Naples bucket list.

Pro Tip: Stop by again in the evening and this amazing place in Naples will have a TOTALLY different feel to it.

Amount of Time Needed: 15 minutes

Buy Christmas Items on Via San Gregorio Armeno

Model Naploi shops that have been crafted in the city for centuries as part of Nativity Scenes that are sold on Via San Gregorio Armeno.

As part of your wanderings around Spaccanapoli, don’t forget to check out Via San Gregorio Armeno during your one day in Naples Italy itinerary.

This street is dedicated to the sales of “presepe” which are handcrafted nativity scenes that have been produced in Naples for centuries.

In fact, you’ll spot them in various churches during the course of your one day in Naples.

Here, you can buy nativity sets, figurines, and even the materials that you can use to makie your very own nativity scene (yeah, now you’re fancy like Martha Stewart).

Plus, Christmas Street is a year-round thing in Naples. Although, the stalls are busier and buzzier (okay, crowded) closer to Christmas.

Pro Tip: Seeing as I’ve been to Naples countless times in all the seasons, I’ve noticed that prices fluctuate. So, summer and November/December mean a spike in prices.

As such, plan to do your Christmas shopping in January or the shoulder season for the best deals. But don’t miss the awesome festive vibes closer to the holiday.

See the Veiled Christ at Sansevero Chapel Museum

Now, let’s move over to one of the most unique things to do with one day in Naples.

Tiny but mighty, the Sansevero Chapel Museum (Museo Cappella Sansevero) houses a collection of some of the finest sculptures in the world.

Among these, you’ll see the Veiled Christ, completed by the Rococo-era Neapolitan sculptor Giuseppe Sanmartino in 1753.

In a nutshell, this is a life-sized marble statue of Jesus Christ covered in a shroud. Both are carved from the same block as the statue and are truly awesome to behold.

Seriously, if you only see one thing in Naples let this be it. I PROMISE you will not be disappointed.

Sure, the museum is a bit small. But the artwork here is so incredible that you could easily spend an hour marveling at all the sculptures.

However, around half an hour ought to do it. Plus. pre-booking a ticket is essential since this place is mega popular and the museum is itty bitty. So, a small museum + hordes of people = long lines.

To be honest, it would make sense to join a tour that includes a stop here. In fact, this Downtown Naples walking tour covers all the sites listed thus far.

Yeah, this tour will drop you off at Sansevero Chapel Museum. Admission is included and your guide will give you the lowdown on ALL the sculptures (HOORAY!!!)

Pro Tip: Again, BOOK YOUR TICKETS IN ADVANCE. I made the mistake of not getting tickets in advance and waited hours in line. But, it was worth it.

This place is also closed on Tuesdays so stop by on any other day of the week.

Amount of Time Needed: 30 minutes

Ogle the Cathedral of Naples

The white, stone exterior of the Cathedral of naples. Two small towers sit on either side of a central triangular rood with a circular window. The church features Gothic, Baroque, and Renaissance-style architecture and is a must-see during your Naples 1 day itinerary.

I mean, what’s a European city trip without seeing an epic cathedral? Besides, Naples Cathedral is a major landmark to tick off your 1 day in Naples, Italy itinerary.

But, this church also goes by the name Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta or the Duomo di Napoli.

And, it contains several chapels. Among which, the chapel dedicated to Saint Januarius (or, San Gennaro – the patron saint of Naples) is the most important.

See, it contains a vial of the blood that belonged to Saint Januarius. This is brought out three times a year on the first Saturday in May, the 19th of September, and the 16th of December.

The ritual dictates that the blood should liquefy. If it fails to do so, legend says that disaster will befall Naples.

It’s also free to visit the main cathedral nave but separate charges apply to the chapels and crypts.

Stop for Lunch in Naples

best tours in naples italy

By now, you should be feeling a wee bit peckish, if not famished.

Therefore, it’s time to hit up Trattoria Don Vincenzo. It is a laid-back, authentic Neapolitan restaurant specializing in seafood.

Usually, they have a lunchtime special for around €35 ($27). However, if you just want a single dish then order the signature pasta fresca Don Vincenzo.

It’s made of fresh pasta that is tossed with prawns in a creamy, smoky, cheesy sauce. So…flipping…good.

Yeah, I was introduced to this place while enjoying one of the best food tours in Naples and have been coming back ever since.

Anyway, this gorgeous dish is filling and nourishing, but without being overly heavy. But, if you eat elsewhere, avoid pizza. That’s on this one day in Naples Italy itinerary for dinner.

Pro-Tip: If you’re spending more than 1 day in Naples, Italy, you should totally go on a food tour . See, Neapolitan cuisine is like nothing you’ve ever tasted before.

Because traditional cooking revolves around simple recipes using seasonal ingredients with strong tastes. The Neapolitan ragù is world-class (and you can find veggie versions).

But, you can learn all about this (and way more) during this incredible street food tour with a local .

Roam Subterranean Naples at the Catacombs of San Gennaro

The underground tunnels of the catacombs of san Gennaro all lit-up with yellow and red lights with a central hallway.

⭐️ Rating: 4.6/5.0 (3836 Reviews) Price: $12.04 per person Duration: 45 hours 📍 Meeting Point: Meet at the Catacombs of San Gennaro Operator: Catacombs di Napoli Details: Read more on Get Your Guide Now!

After lunch, we’re heading underground – to the catacombs of Naples. FYI, the city does have several possible catacombs to choose from.

From my experience, the Catacombs of San Gennaro are the most interesting.

Yes, they are a little bit outside of the city center (10-minute drive, 20-minute walk) but it’s totally worth it to do the guided tour and see some epic mosaics.

This attraction is an engaging and enlightening look into burial rituals as well as the life and death of the patron saint of Naples.

See, it’s spread over underground basilicas and frescos that date back more than 1,000 years.

“Great tour, if was informative and detailed about the history and the art in the Catacombs. You get entrance to both Catacombs in the city with the 1 ticket price. They are vastly different and are worth going to both. Valentina was an excellent tour guide and has an art degree which added to her value as a guide.” Mike ( read more reviews now )

Here, a guide is mandatory. That’s partly for safety (this isn’t a place you’ll want to get lost) but also for understanding the heritage of this amazing place during a day in Naples Italy.

And, if you buy this guided tour of the Catacombs of San Gennaro they also throw in admission to the Catacombs of San Gaudioso.

These are slightly closer to the centro storico and you’ll have a whole 12 months to visit.

Buses (including routes 204, 168, and C63) run from the Galleria Principe di Napoli and stop right outside. Or, there’s always Uber/Free Now/SIXT.

Amount of Time Needed: 45 minutes

Browse Masterpieces at the Capodimonte Palace and Museum

The stately pink exterior of Capodimonte Palace and Museum. It is surrounded by a luch park with green benches and walkways and has lots of tall palm trees.

⭐️ Rating: 4.2/5.0 (54 Reviews) Price: $23.87 per person Duration: 1 day 📍 Meeting Point: Ticket Office Operator: GetYourGuide Tours & Tickets GmbH Details: Read more on Get Your Guide Now!

FYI, if you do end up visiting the San Gennaro Catacombs, I recommend a sneaky side trip to Capodimonte Palace and Museum .

This is a gorgeous hilltop estate comprising of a Bourbon palazzo and an awesome art gallery.

Works by Caravaggio, Warhol, Titian, Borgia, and Carracci form the basis of the collection.

“The paintings were amazing. It took us over two hours to go through just the second floor. The grounds were beautiful and the cafe had nice lunch options. Well worth the money. I highly recommend.” Rachel ( read more reviews now )

Plus, it was used as a hunting lodge, so the grounds are awesome to walk through too.

But, it’s a sizable place to visit. Therefore, you’ll need to consider sacrificing other attractions on this itinerary if you want to stop by during your 24 hours in Naples Italy.

If you do go, avoid waiting in line and pre-book your admission to Capodimonte Palace and Museum .

Amount of Time Needed: Between 1 and 2 hours

Catacombs Option B: Visit Naples Underground

⭐️ Rating: 4.4/5.0 (7563 Reviews) Price: $16.42 per person Duration: 2 hours 📍 Meeting Point: Varies Operator: Naples Underground SRL Details: Read more on Get Your Guide Now

Here’s an alternative if you’re itching to see what lies beneath Naples but the other catacombs aren’t feasible as part of your one day in Naples Italy itinerary.

Naples Underground (Napoli Sotterranea) is located in the heart of the historic center near Spaccanapoli.

Actually, this is basically an underground city (funny, that) and comprises of streets and plazas that sit below ground.

“Really interesting visit. Francesco, our guide, very nice and talented. He told us the whole story with that touch of folklore that makes tours with a local guide truly priceless.” Martina ( read more reviews now )

The exhibition includes the chance to see a Greek-Roman Aqueduct, the remains of a Roman theater, and its accompanying Summa Cavea.

This is one of the most popular things to do in Naples and tour groups are restricted for safety. Therefore, advance booking for Naples Underground is essential .

Having visited all the underground attractions, I’d say that the catacombs are more pleasant to visit as they’re less crowded. But, Naples Underground earns brownie points for its central location.

Also, it’s billed as being kid-friendly but you might want to refrain from taking nervous or claustrophobic little ones down these tunnels.

Amount of Time Needed: 2 hours

  • Castel Sant’Elmo

A panoramic view of Napoli Bay from Castel Sant'Elmo.

⭐️ Rating: 3.8/5.0 (51 Reviews) Price: $8.98 per person Duration: 1 day📍 Meeting Point: Castel Sant’Elmo, Operator: GetYourGuide Tours & Tickets GmbH Details: Read more on Get Your Guide Now!

Now, if you did visit the catacombs and hunting lodge, you’ll want to hail an Uber/Free Now/SIXT to drop you at the Montesanto funicular station.

Otherwise, you can walk from Naples Underground in around 15 minutes.

Once there, you’ll ride the funicular to Castel Sant’Elmo . This 14th-century fortress sits on Vomero Hill and grants visitors some of the best views in Naples.

These stretch out over the city towards the Gulf of Naples and Mount Vesuvius. Note that an admission fee does apply. So, it’s faster to buy a ticket in advance online .

Then, you can wander around the museum, the church, and the terrace at leisure.

Naturally, this is a cool place to catch the sunset. Realistically, you might make it if your 1 day in Naples is during the winter.

“Magnificent citadel to discover at the start of your stay to discover the city, the bay and, in the distance, Vesuvius.” Anonymous ( read more reviews now )

If not, don’t stress about trying to get there for the golden hour. Having visited in daylight and sunset, I can confirm that the views will blow your mind either way.

Plus, I have to agree the castle does take a bit of effort due to its location. But, the views really don’t compare to anywhere else so it’s worth the trek.

Amount of Time Needed: You’ll need around 20 minutes to get here and there maybe another hour to explore the castle itself.

Explore Via Toledo and the Spanish Quarter

After riding the funicular down to Augusteo station (consider walking down the stairs if you’re doing okay for time), you’ll head south to the Spanish Quarter.

Also known as Quartieri Spagnoli in Italian, it’s everyone’s favorite place during their 24 hours in Naples.

It’s bounded by Via Toledo, a major retail thoroughfare that’s predominantly pedestrianized. Almost a mile long, it’s one of the most beautiful streets in the city.

Plus, it’s a cool place to stockpile gifts and souvenirs while grazing on street food.

Moving onto the main part of the Quartieri Spagnoli, this is another prime stomping ground for Maradona fans. There are scores of murals concentrated in the western end of the neighborhood.

Maradona lover or not, I can guarantee that being jostled around the Spanish Quarter will be a highlight of your 1 day in Naples Italy itinerary.

By the time you arrive, it should be filled with locals and tourists and have a good-natured energy about it.

Window Shop at Galleria Umberto I

The impressive interior of Galleria Umberto I in Naples. It is a stunning, glass roofed shopping arcade with tiled floors and old world style buildings that house local shops. You can see people walking through one of five different pedestrian walkways here.

Need to pick up even more souvenirs to commemorate your 1 day in Naples Italy itinerary? Well, after Via Toledo, Galleria Umberto I is the best place to throw your Euros around.

It contains a mix of posh boutiques, mid-range/designer stores, and places to eat. Yeah, it’s not all Gucci and Versace here so don’t let the posh interior dissuade you from stepping inside.

I loved walking around this magical shopping arcade even though I didn’t buy a damn thing.

I mean, this 19th-century covered shopping arcade is a vision of marble flooring, classical columns, and sculpted facades.

At the very least, it’ll take you less than five minutes to glide through the gallery.

If you’ve already been on a Milan walking tour and it looks familiar, you’re onto something. Confusingly, Galleria Umberto “I” was modeled on the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele “II” in the Italian fashion capital.

FYI, you can also stop for a coffee in the shopping arcade. But, if you’re asking me, there are better places to sip an espresso in Naples.

Although, you can’t match the sweet, sweet vibes that can be found inside Galleria Umberto I.

Admire Castel Nuovo

Wedged between the Port of Naples and the Spanish Quarter, Castel Nuovo is a mighty medieval fortress. FYI, it’s also known as Maschio Angioino.

Its foundations date way back to 1279 and it was used as a base for kings of Naples, Aragon, and Spain until 1815.

Therefore, the exhibition is pivotal in explaining the conquering of Naples by the Spanish Empire following the end of French rule.

Now, Castel Nuovo is cheap to visit and is worth the ticket purely for the views from the walkways.

Plus, it’s nigh impenetrable. So, standing inside the quad will make you understand the phrase, as safe as houses. Well, royal palace residences, at least.

Although, even if you don’t enter the complex it’s worthwhile to just see the exterior during your 24 hours in Naples Italy itinerary.

But, if you are fascinated by European regal history and are fortunate to spend longer than 1 day in Naples Italy, there is a tour with your name on it.

This walking tour of Royal Naples hones in on the Kingdom of Naples. In addition to Maschio Angioino and the Castel dell’Ovo. We’re getting to it!

Amount of Time Needed: 15 minutes to admire the exterior and 45 minutes to look inside

Enjoy Piazza del Plebiscito

A view of Piazza del Plebiscito. You can see a white lion statue on the left and a giant Roman style church with a central dome and en entrance with columns and a trianular roof. The piazza is surrounded by a white semi-circle of columns and there is a dark statue of a man riding a horse on the right. A great place to visit during your Naples 1 day itinerary.

Close to the Lungomare, Piazza del Plebiscito is a whopping big public square with tons of photo-worthy landmarks.

Actually, this is where you’ll find the San Francesco di Paola Church (Basilica Reale Pontificia San Francesco da Paola).

Yeah, it looks exactly like the Pantheon of Rome (great to see during a Rome night tour ) and is free to visit.

You’ll also see the Palazzo Salerno with its handsome neoclassical facade. Seeing as this is used by the Italian Army, it’s off-limits. There are various other buildings to admire from the ground.

Local Tip: Visit Naples over the holidays and you’ll see the Christmas tree which is amazing.

Visit the Royal Palace of Naples

The orange colored hallways of the Royal Palace of Naples have arches ceilings and and are lined with old world lanterns. Be sure to visit if you have one day in Naples.

⭐️ Rating: 4.2/5.0 (147 Reviews) Price: $17.73 per person Duration: 1 day 📍Meeting Point: Royal Palace of Naples Operator: GetYourGuide Tours & Tickets GmbH Details: Read more on Get Your Guide Now!

Well, it would be rude not to swing by the Royal Palace for a cappuccino with the King of Italy when planning a one day in Naples Italy itinerary.

Just kidding, Italy doesn’t have a royal family. But, the Palazzo Reale di Napoli is located in the Piazza del Plebiscito.

While it took a bashing during the war, this 17th-century residence has been restored to its former glory.

Since the monarchy dissolved in 1946, the palace is now purely a museum.

“A beautiful palace, it also seems to me to be excellently maintained, the museum dedicated to Caruso is fascinating, a gem for an enthusiast like me.” Daniele ( read more reviews now )

Exhibitions focus on the heritage of the Bourbon Rulers (the France-originated dynasty, not the spirit).

Plus, there are scrolls excavated from Herculaneum and a stunning nativity scene in the Royal Chapel.

Seeing as the palace is popular, you’ll want to pre-book an admission ticket . Allow an hour to complete the self-guided exploration and remember that it’s closed on Wednesdays.

Amount of Time Needed: Around an hour

Stroll Along the Naples Lungomare

Alright, one final push on this uber-ambitious 1 day in Naples, Italy itinerary. Because the prettiest part of the Naples waterfront is located to the south of Piazza del Plebiscito.

Honestly, just walk along as much of the Lungomare as possible. It’s a scenic spot to clear your head and decompress after a jam-packed 24 hours in Naples Italy.

Generally, Naples locals head to the waterfront in the early evening for a pre-sunset stroll.

And that makes sense since the views stretch across the Gulf of Naples towards Ischia and Vesuvius. Plus, you’ll spot Ovo Castle (Castel dell’Ovo) on the bay.

FYI, it’s even possible to visit the castle. However, the last admission is at 4:00 pm which doesn’t work with this one day in Naples itinerary.

To be frank, it’s way better to view the castle from the Lungomare anyway.

Amount of Time Needed: 30 minutes. It just depends on how much you like walking.

Eat Neapolitan Pizza in Naples

View of three different personal pizzas sitting one on top of each other at a shop in Naples. The pizzas are individual and made with a lto of sauce and are served as part of a Naples day trip to Pompeii.

Finally, it’s time to tackle one of the best thing to do in Naples above all else -dive into Neapolitan pizza.

See, Naples is the birthplace of pizza and they do things differently down here. The wood-fired pizza is made exclusively from Campania-grown tomatoes and fresh mozzarella cheese.

Furthermore, a drizzle of olive oil and a dash of fresh basil is all that’s allowed on top.

But where to find this mythical Naples-style pizza? Anyway! You’ve got tons of places to choose from since most restaurants in Naples are high caliber.

Although, after chomping my way through many a slice of Neapolitan pizza over the years, I can testify that Gino e Toto Sorbillo is beyond amazing and well worth a visit.

Personally, I think it’s way better than L’antica Pizzeria da Michele. Yes, everyone RAVES about this place, and I did wait over two hours in line for a personal pizza.

Sadly, you can’t reserve a table and have to grab a ticket upon arrival and wait for a table inside the informal dining room.

Anyway, when I visited the bottom was burnt and the place was packed and it just wasn’t the experience I wanted.

However, I am still mentioning this pizzeria in Naples because everyone LOVES it and maybe I just visited on an off day and was unlucky.

Amount of Time Needed: L’antica Pizzeria da Michele is ALWAYS packed and wait times are usually at least two hours. So, don’t show up hungry.

Spending More than 1 Day in Naples Italy?

Have extra time in Naples? Lucky you because you can take a day trip to Pompeii.

Pro-Tip: There are hundreds of tours to wade through but they can be hit and miss in terms of service. Therefore, I’ve cherry-picked the best Naples to Pompeii tours .

However, it is pretty quick and easy to get to Pompeii via train. Just pre-book your tickets to Pompeii and you can DEFFO visit on your own.

That being said, tours are great if you’re in a hurry and want to see more than one place in a single day.

So, if you want a day tour then book this all-inclusive full-day Pompeii and Mount Vesuvius tour . It includes everything!

It even offers round-trip transfers from Naples and spares you the hassle of changing platforms when on the train.

Plus, you bag skip-the-line admission to Pompeii. Honestly, I lost hours of valuable vacation time (like, hours) the first time I visited the complex because I forgot to book my tickets in advance.

Note, Pompeii is huge, colossally huge. It’s easy to get lost or walk right past some of the coolest remains (another rookie error I put my hand up to making).

But, this epic tour also includes a guided walk around the archaeological site with commentary.

That way, you actually get to learn about the heritage of the buried city and learn about the cultural significance of the world’s greatest time capsule.

And then, back to your hotel for a shower and a cup of coffee.

No. This tour won’t let you go until you’ve summited the volcano. Now, visiting Vesuvius is one of the most incredible things you can do in Italy.

However, trying to cram both sites into one day via public transport is crazy stressful (again, been there, done that, got the t-shirt).

Rest assured, the hike isn’t so challenging – it’s just a short, steep burst. Kids can do it and you don’t need to be Lara Croft fit to do it.

Although, another option is to enjoy one of the best tours of the Amalfi Coast from Naples if history really isn’t your thing.

Amazing tour of naples and its cuisine

"My brother and I loved our tour with Roberto. We only had a short period of time in Naples and wanted to take advantage of the incredible food culture while also getting a sense of the city. We tried a wide variety of local specialties and got to learn from owners/chefs. We also got to talk to Roberto about his experiences which deepened the experience. Highly recommended as an early-trip activity for anyone coming to Naples."

"What can I say… one of the best tours I’ve had (and I’ve had many). Gennaro loves Napoli and it really shows, and he does an excellent job of showing his city and the wonderful food! Between three cities in this trip, the food on this tour was honestly the best. Without a doubt I highly recommend doing this tour with Gennaro! "

9 Best Things To Do in Naples, Italy

Updated April 14, 2021

Naples is a sprawling city, but most of its best things to do are tucked in the pedestrian-friendly historic center. This UNESCO World Heritage site and its surroundings are home to churches like the Museo Cappella Sansevero , which doubles as an art

best tours in naples italy

Via Caracciolo e Lungomare di Napoli Via Caracciolo e Lungomare di Napoli free

For a nice seaside promenade, look no further than the Via Caracciolo e Lungomare di Napoli. Flanked by cafes and restaurants on one side and the Gulf of Naples on the other, this walkway serves as a relaxing place to stretch your legs and breathe in the fresh sea air. The views of nearby Mount Vesuvius and the island of Capri add an almost magical element to this pedestrian walkway.

Although recent visitors say a walk on Via Caracciolo e Lungomare di Napoli is a definite must-do, they recommend steering clear during the weekends when it gets "extremely crowded." Some also cautioned that vendors trying to hawk their goods can be a bit pushy, so be prepared to say a kind but firm " no, grazie " a time or two.

Museo Cappella Sansevero (Sansevero Chapel Museum) Museo Cappella Sansevero (Sansevero Chapel Museum)

The highlight of the Museo Cappella Sansevero is the "Veiled Christ," a statue created by the Neapolitan artist Giuseppe Sanmartino in 1753. The famously realistic statue rests at the center of the chapel, but there are other works of art on display here, too, including the Statues of the Virtues, which portray themes like "Decorum," "Modesty" and "Sincerity." The chapel itself, in both its 18th-century architecture and design, is also a sight to behold. Once you've toured the chapel, head downstairs to the crypt, where the "Anatomical Machines" exhibit is housed. Not for the faint of heart, the exhibit features two glass cases with the skeletons of a man and woman that have their artery and vein systems exposed. It's believed these skeletons date back to 1763.

Recent visitors reported that the "Veiled Christ" is worth the long queues. Others highly recommend reading up on the chapel's artists and history before you go to get the most out of your visit, though purchasing the audio guide is another way to do the same. Audio guides are available in a variety of languages, including English.

Certosa e Museo di San Martino Certosa e Museo di San Martino

Founded in the 14th century as a Carthusian monastery, the Certosa e Museo di San Martino sits high above the city on Vomero hill, leaving visitors in awe of its intricate exteriors, immaculately-designed cloisters and sweeping skyline views. The interior has undergone many alterations over its centuries of existence, including contributions by famous Italian masters Giovanni Antonio Dosio and Cosimo Fanzago. Visitors will also find 17th-century works by such famed artists as Francesco Solimena, Massimo Stanzione, Jusepe de Ribera and Battista Caracciolo. What's more, the Certosa e Museo di San Martino is home to an impressive collection of antique presepi (nativity scenes).

Recent travelers raved about the church's elaborate frescoes and its unbeatable views of the bay, the city and Mount Vesuvius. However, reviewers warned others not to make the same mistake they did by trying to walk to the monastery. After all, it's much easier (and inexpensive) to pay 1 euro ($1) to ride the funicular up the cliff and walk the rest of the way.

Catacombe di San Gennaro Catacombe di San Gennaro

The Catacombe di San Gennaro date back to the second century, but they became a pilgrimage site in the fifth century when San Gennaro – the patron saint who lends his name to the catacombs – was laid to rest here. Along with the underground graves, visitors will view art, including fifth-century mosaics and a third century, Pompeian-style room adorned with early Christian-themed paintings.

One recent traveler called the tour of the catacombs the "highlight" of his trip to Naples, citing the knowledgeable (English-speaking) travel guide who retells the fascinating history of the catacombs. But this reviewer isn't alone: Most visitors agreed that the guided tour makes this attraction really come alive. Along with comfortable shoes, you'll want to bring a light sweater (even during a summer visit), as the temperature underground can vary quite a bit from the street-level climate.

Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli (Naples National Archeological Museum) Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli (Naples National Archeological Museum)

The Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli is where you'll find artifacts rescued from Pompeii and Herculaneum. The collection includes everything from Greek and Roman sculptures to intricate mosaics. The building itself is also a sight to behold, as it once served as military barracks before it became the city's main university. It didn't become a museum until Charles VII declared it so in the late 18th century.

If you only have time for one museum on your Naples getaway, many recent travelers (and travel experts) recommend making the Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli your pick. Still, more than one visitor lamented the lack of a museum cafe or other on-site refreshments (a valid complaint considering the size of the museum). Others complained about the signage, which is mostly in Italian. Though there is an audio guide available, reviewers said it only provides information on the museum highlights.

Galleria Borbonica (Bourbon Tunnel) Galleria Borbonica (Bourbon Tunnel)

The Galleria Borbonica – or Bourbon Tunnel – is an unfinished underground passageway commissioned by King Ferdinand II and carved back in the 19th century as an escape route that would link the Royal Palace of Naples to military barracks in Via della Pace (now Via Morelli). Though the tunnel was never finished, it was used in World War II as an air raid shelter and military hospital. Along your tour of the tunnel, you'll spot debris and period relics, including vintage cars.

According to recent visitors, the passionate (English-speaking) tour guides make a visit to the Bourbon Tunnel extraordinary. Reviewers say that although the entrances are narrow and may leave some feeling slightly claustrophobic, the tunnel widens inside.

Pompeii and Mount Vesuvius Pompeii and Mount Vesuvius

Two of the area's most iconic locales – Mount Vesuvius and Pompeii – can be found roughly 15 miles away from central Naples. Mount Vesuvius is the only active volcano left on Europe's mainland, while Pompeii, which fell victim to one of Mount Vesuvius' eruptions in A.D. 79, is a UNESCO World Heritage city that was preserved by the volcano's ash. It was not rediscovered until 1748.

According to many travelers, the best way to view both of these sites is to see them together on a guided tour; consult our list of the best Italy tours to view traveler-approved companies. During the tour, visitors will get to hike up Mount Vesuvius and wander around Pompeii. Tours offer more background about the locales than can be learned if exploring without a guide, but keep in mind that the hike up the volcano can be a bit strenuous.

Museo di Capodimonte Museo di Capodimonte

Originally commissioned in 1738 as a hunting lodge for Charles VII, king of Naples and Sicily, this grand palace took more than a century to construct. These days, it serves as a museum, hanging works by names like Titian, Sandro Botticelli and Michelangelo da Caravaggio, among other well-known Italian and Neapolitan artists, as well as Andy Warhol.

Some travelers say the works housed here can feel monotonous, and one visitor notes that the placards describing the works of art are only in Italian. Still, most say that the view from the palazzo is magnificent, as is the surrounding park.

Via San Gregorio Armeno (Christmas Alley) Via San Gregorio Armeno (Christmas Alley) free

Nicknamed "Christmas Alley," Via San Gregorio Armeno bustles year-round with artisans hawking goods, such as nativity and celebrity statuettes, as well as the famous terracotta figurines created by Giuseppe Ferrigno. Visitors will find ornaments resembling everyone from the pope to popular football players to baby Jesus. Curiously, Elvis shows up here, too.

Some travelers call the shops that flank Christmas Alley cute and kitschy but say Via San Gregorio Armeno is worth a stroll. Even if you're not in the market to purchase any souvenirs, visitors say the area's architecture and overall ambience are perfect for a coffee, a gelato and an interesting glimpse into Naples culture.

Best Pizza in Naples, Italy

The 15 Best Tours and Things to Do in Naples, Italy

1. eat pizza.

Naples is the birthplace of pizza and a meal in one of its heaving pizzerias is a quintessential city experience. Popular places like Pizzeria Gino Sorbillo (Via dei Tribunali 32) and Di Matteo (Via dei Tribunali 94) draw large crowds, so be prepared to queue for a table. And don’t expect fancy toppings – the classic Neapolitan pizza is the margherita with tomato, mozzarella and basil. According to city folklore, this historic composition was invented by a local cook in the 19th century to honour the then queen of Italy, Margherita di Savoia. The toppings were chosen to reflect the red, white and green of the Italian flag. To ensure you’re getting a genuine Neapolitan pizza, go for a place with a Vera Pizza Napoletana sign outside and a wood-fired oven (forno a legna). Note also that Neapolitans usually drink beer with their pizzas not wine. To really immerse yourself take this excellent pizza-making class .

2. Explore the Historic Center

Take to the teeming lanes and backstreets of the historic center to experience some of Naples’ legendary streetlife. Action is focused on the claustrophobic area around Via dei Tribunali and ‘Spaccanapoli’, a long, strip of several streets strung together. In this bustling district, you’ll come across majestic baroque churches, ornate piazzas, heaving pizzerias and lively street markets. Just don’t expect peace and quiet. It’s a noisy, chaotic area and you’ll have to keep your wits about you, if nothing else to avoid the scooters that fly through the narrow alleyways.

3. Walk the Seafront

Stretch your legs on Naples’ lungomare (seafront). With Vesuvius looming on the horizon and Capri shimmering in the blue haze, the 3km-long promenade between Santa Lucia and Mergellina is a glorious spot for a stroll. If you’re hungry, there are various cafes and eateries along the way or you can stop off at the Borgo Marinaro for a seafood meal. Whilst on the Borgo take time to investigate Castel dell’Ovo, Naples’ oldest castle, which has been a city landmark since the 12th century.

4. Take a Day Trip to Pompeii & Herculaneum

No trip to Naples would be complete without a detour to Pompeii. The site, within easy striking distance of the city, provides a remarkable snapshot into ancient life with its remarkably preserved houses, public baths, temples, amphitheater, even a brothel. Pompeii is busiest on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, so try to visit on a weekday if possible. Also, afternoons are quieter than mornings. The critical time to avoid is between 10am and 11am when the tour buses arrive and long queues form at the main ticket office. As well as Pompeii, you can also visit the ruins of Herculaneum, a second victim of Vesuvius’s AD 79 eruption. The site here is smaller than Pompeii and while less well known, it has some amazingly preserved houses and frescoes. Both Pompeii and Herculaneum are easy to get to from Naples. From underneath Stazione Centrale, take the Circumvesuviana train to Ercolano Scavi for Herculaneum (about 20 minutes) and Pompei Scavi for Pompeii (35 minutes). Some other considerations: make sure to take bottled water; wear comfy walking shoes; and take sunscreen and a hat if visiting in summer.

5. Go to church

You could spend months exploring all of Naples’ churches. The city is awash with basilicas, churches, chapels, and shrines, many of which contain priceless artworks. One of the most imposing is the Duomo, the city’s lavishly decorated baroque cathedral. Further splendors await at the Chiesa del Gesù Nuovo, one of several fascinating churches in the historic center. Nearby, the Gothic Basilica di Santa Chiara is an oasis of calm with its serene tiled cloisters. Note that Naples’ churches are generally free to enter.

6. Revel in Baroque Art

Search out the Cappella Sansevero for a blast of stunning baroque art. Hidden in a backstreet near Piazza San Domenico Maggiore, this ornate 16th-century chapel is home to a series of awe-inspiring sculptures. Chief among these is Giuseppe Sanmartino’s Cristo Velato (The Veiled Christ), an incredible life-size depiction of Jesus lying under a transparent shroud. An altogether stranger sight are the chapel’s so-called Anatomical Machines. These are two human skeletons, one of a man, the other of a woman, displayed with their arterial systems perfectly preserved.

7. Day Trip to Capri

Long a byword for Mediterranean chic and still today a favorite summer hangout, Capri is a popular day trip from Naples. Frequent hydrofoils serve the island from Molo Beverello, taking about 50 minutes to make the short crossing (€20 one-way). Once on the island, you can explore the whitewashed streets of Capri Town and take a panoramic chairlift up from Anacapri. The island’s premier sight is the Grotta Azzurra (Blue Grotto), a stunning sea cave named for its ethereal blue light. The easiest way to visit this is to take a boat tour from Marina Grande – these cost around €15 not including the €14 admission to the cave.

8. Shop for Presepi

Naples is renowned for its nativity scenes, known in Italian as presepi. To see what all the fuss is about head to Via San Armeno Greco where local artisans have been hand-crafting figurines for centuries. Each year new characters are added to the cast, which as well as traditional biblical figures and animals also includes local celebrities, film stars, and caricatures of Italian politicians. Not surprisingly, the street gets particularly frenzied in the build-up to Christmas when shoppers pour in to update their Yuletide decoration.

9. Have a Coffee Break

Get into the local lifestyle by nipping into a bar for a quick coffee. To do it like a pro, pay first at the cash register, then place your receipt on the counter and order from the barista, perhaps leaving a coin or two as a small tip. There are various coffee concoctions to choose from, but by far and away the most common is the espresso, which is what you’ll get if you ask for un caffè. Cappuccinos are also popular but in Italy, these are considered morning-only drinks. Note also that coffees are generally served already sweetened in Naples, so if you want yours without sugar ask for it amaro (bitter). The city’s best-known café is Caffè Gambrinus (Via Chiaia 1-2), a smart chandeliered affair where Oscar Wilde and Ernest Hemingway once drank. Another place revered for its coffee is Caffè Mexico on Piazza Dante.

10. Take in a Gallery

Naples boasts a great selection of museums and galleries showcasing everything from ancient sculpture to baroque paintings and contemporary installations. The city’s most important art museum is the Museo di Capodimonte whose vast collection of classical art includes works by the likes of Raphael, Botticelli, Caravaggio, even Andy Warhol. For more contemporary fare try MADRE , a fascinating modern art museum near the Duomo, or check out the works in the Toledo and Università metro stations.

11. Escape to Vomero

To escape the relentless hurly-burly of central Naples, head up to the hilltop district of Vomero. Here you can bask in sweeping bay views and visit the Certosa e Museo di San Martino, a beautiful monastery complex known for its opulent baroque decor and beautiful cloisters. Among its artistic treasures is the city’s largest presepe (nativity scene), a huge 18th-century composition featuring 160 figures and 80 animals. To get to Vomero take the funicular from Piazza Augusteo, just off Via Toledo.

12. A Night at the Opera

For an evening of high drama, head to the Teatro San Carlo . This historic theater is one of Italy’s top opera houses and its classic gilded interior sets a memorable stage for world-class opera, ballet and classical music. If you can’t make a performance, you can visit on a guided tour or learn about its illustrious past at MeMus, a modern museum dedicated to the theater. Note that entrance to the museum is through Palazzo Reale on Piazza del Plebiscito.

13. Go Underground

You don’t need to take the metro to go underground in Naples. The city’s undersoil is riddled with tunnels, tombs, grottoes and catacombs, many of which can be visited. To the north of the center, you can explore the Catacomba di San Gennaro where the city’s patron saint was interred in the 5th century. Another good site is the Galleria Borbonica , a 19th-century tunnel system built to link the royal palace (Palazzo Reale) with a barracks near the sea. During WWII, it was used as an air-raid shelter.

14. Bone up on Ancient History

Naples’ Museo Archeologico Nazionale is a must-see. One of Italy’s great museums, it boasts a world-class collection of ancient Greek and Roman artifacts. Many of its prized treasures come from Pompeii and Herculaneum, including a series of stunning mosaics. Chief among these is a celebrated depiction of Alexander the Great directing his armies against the Persian king Darius. Another outstanding work is the Toro Farnese (Farnese Bull), a vast sculpture showing the mythical death of the Queen of Thebes. For a change of style, search out the museum’s red-light section, the Gabinetto Segreto, which displays a small stash of ancient erotica.

15. Cruise the Amalfi Coast

The area is at its busiest in July and August, but is beautiful throughout the year, especially in May, June and September. To reach the Coast from Naples (if you don’t do a tour), you’ll first need to get to Sorrento, either by Alilauro boat or by Circumvesuviana train. From there, SITA Sud buses and summer-only ferries connect with Positano and Amalfi.

Such an amazing experience. I did the Amalfi Coast tour and the whole trip was wonderful. I had Meaghan as a guide and she was incredible, not only extremely knowledgeable about all the sights and locations, but also the friendliest, nicest, person ever. It was my first time travelling overseas and I was pretty nervous as I was doing it by myself but being with Meaghan and the rest of my group honestly felt like being away with friends. I couldn’t recommend this enough.

Amalfi Coast Walking - Agriturismo

Overall I really enjoyed the Amalfi walking tour. Staying in a small community was a welcome change from the large city tourist experience. The accommodations were as expected, and the Agritourisimo owners were lovely hosts. I especially enjoyed the homemade pasta and desserts. The wine tasting dinner was a lot of fun and the pizza was excellent. I could not have asked for a nicer group of fellow hikers. Our guide, Peter, was very personable, attentive to everyone’s needs and abilities and was knowledgable about the region. I am a 67 year old Canadian woman in excellent health and keep physically very active. I live in a location that is predominantly flat land. I made an effort to climb hills as much as possible to train for the walk but walking on ground is not enough to prepare for all the stone steps on the walks. Stair climbing and descending would be at good training routine. I found going down the steps very hard on the knees, but they felt better after a couple of days of walking on this terrain. I would caution anyone with knee or hip joint problems about choosing this tour. A 76 year old woman in our group had no problems at all. However, after falling on the loose rock the first day, an 85-year-old man from North America was not able to participate in most of the walks. Peter was able to suggest alternate activities for him and his wife and they were still able to enjoy the trip. Anyone older should have excellent balance and be used to walking on uneven terrain and climbing up and down rocky obstacles. I think an upper limit of 85 is overly optimistic for this tour.

ITALY MUST-SEE (Amalfi Coast, Tuscany, Florence, Cinque Terre & more...)

Amalfi Coast Walking - Hotel Risorgimento Tour

Amalfi Coast Walking - Hotel Risorgimento

I had a great time in this active trip called Amalfi Coast Walking - Hotel Risorgimento, and I would have given 5 stars if the description of the hikes were more correctly explained, or if of the difficult hikes were interchangeable with less strenuous days. The first three walks were very difficult, not “leisurely” as described. The Pino Gorge walk to San Lazaro of 5 kilometers, that took about 2 hours was nothing but easy. On our cellulars we recorded over 10,000 steps and 50 flors up. There were an equal number of floors down, and not easy at all. The steps were uneven, really high, broken, slippery and it was dangerous to take your eyes away from them. The afternoon walk was longer, and harder, being described by a fellow traveler as “Stairway to Heaven”. Next day, another walk on the Ancient Republic’s Path. This was more difficult than the day before. We covered 6 kilometers. The description in the itinerary states “a total ascent of 90 meters and a 755 meters decent. The health data on my cellphone showed 21,863 steps and 116 floors up. I regret I don’t have the exact number of floors we descended, but they were astronomical, considering the 755 meters of decent. The following day half of us were afraid to attempt the “Walk in the Ferreire NP” and missed that visit. Scheduling three days in a row long, three difficult walks was a mistake, and describing them as leisurely, or even moderate was not accurate. We are only people, not related to Superman. For the rest of the trip, visiting Ravello, Capri Island, Pompeii, Herculaneum, and ending with the Path of the Gods descent was great, but still not easy. I have to highly recommend the Hotel Risorgimento, were we spent a week. It was really impressive that in a small, not touristic town, to find such high quality place, excellent food, cleanness, present owners. We were treated as family, respected and made welcome. That was an excellent choice.

Fantastic guide Salvo…wonderful people on the tour. I would have loved a local wine / lemon farm tour to have been included. The hikes (I did the first 3 ) were great , but calling the tour local living without doing some of the real local experiences is a little disappointing.
The accommodation was a bit too small but wasn’t as big a deal as we were out for most of the day. Overall, it was an amazing experience and a great way to make new friends!

What to see near Naples, Italy - best day trips from Naples

These are the best day trips from Naples:

Probably the most popular place to visit near Naples is the archeological site of Pompeii . Pompeii was an ancient Roman city that was completely destroyed by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D.

The city has been buried by lava and frozen in time for many centuries until it was rediscovered in the 18th century.

A working archeological site (and a big part of the city still under the ground), Pompeii now functions as an open-air museum. The remains of this ancient city are incredibly well preserved, with streets, houses, shops, and theaters where time seems to have stood still…

Some of the richest villas have incredible mosaics and beautiful frescoes that give you an idea of what life was like in this part of the world almost 2000 years ago.

Pompeii is the most popular day trip from Naples Italy

Getting there: Pompeii can be easily reached by train from Naples. The direct train takes about 37 minutes, so this could be doable as a half-day trip as well. The entrance to the archeological site is just near a railway station. You can also drive to Pompeii, but parking nearby is very expensive. If you decide to go on your own, book your Pompeii entrance tickets online (you’ll still have to exchange the voucher for the actual ticket, but the ‘online’ line should be much shorter than the regular one).

Good to know: Pompeii is huge and even though you receive a map at the entrance, a visit here can be absolutely overwhelming. Where do you even start? What are the must-sees? And when you finally get to some villa, it appears to be closed for restorations… Also, when exploring on your own, often you don’t really know what you are seeing. As some of the reviews online say ‘it’s all just ruins’.

So to avoid disappointment and to appreciate this unique place better, we highly recommend visiting Pompeii with a local guide . They will give you a much better understanding of what you see and how special this place really is.

You can visit Pompeii with a guided tour from Naples or arrive by train/car and only join a guided tour at Pompeii itself. I highly recommend this small-group tour with an archeologist . We visited Pompeii with a guide and it was absolutely worth it. You can also ask your guide for additional recommendations and stay longer after the 2-hour tour is finished to explore further.

TIP: To make the most of your time, you can combine Pompeii with a visit to Mt Vesuvius. There are various 2-in-1 day tours from Naples that allow you to make the most of your time. This popular tour is one of the best day tours from Naples that includes a visit to Pompeii as well as Mt Vesuvius. You can find countless Pompeii tour options here .

2. Mt Vesuvius

The iconic Mount Vesuvius is one of the most recognizable natural landmarks of Naples, featured in so many pictures of the city. It’s also a volcano that was responsible for the destruction of Pompeii and Herculaneum.

Nowadays, you can get really close to the crater of Mount Vesuvius, and it’s a fascinating sight! It’s impossible to imagine how big this volcano really is until you stand there (hoping that it will remain dormant…). We’ve seen quite a few volcanoes and their craters in other parts of the world, but none of them comes even close to Mt Vesuvius…

In addition to the impressive crater, the views over the Gulf of Naples from the top are absolutely stunning. To us, coming here was one of the most special experiences that exceeded all expectations (to tell the truth, we were wondering whether it was even worth going).

So if you have half a day to spare when visiting Naples and are wondering if Mt Vesuvius is worth a visit, I highly recommend it. We found that it’s more than worth the hype!

Mount Vesuvius - best day trips from Naples Italy

Good to know: If you’re looking for a break from all the busy archeological and historical sites, Mt Vesuvius is a great nature destination to visit near Naples. And since you don’t need more than a few hours, it can be visited as a day trip in combination with Pompeii or Herculaneum. Most organized tours that come here spend about an hour at the top, which is a bit rushed but gives you enough time to see the crater.

Practical information: Visiting Mt Vesuvius requires a timed ticket which – if you come on your own – you have to reserve here in advance. In addition, if you come by car, you have to reserve parking (by creating an account here ) and provide the number plate of your car. As you can imagine, this is really difficult with a rental car – by the time you know the number plate, there are hardly any parking spots left (or Mt Vesuvius tickets for that time are sold out)…

The easiest way to visit Mt Vesuvius is with organized tours . Most of the tours combine a visit here with Pompeii, but there’s also a half-day tour from Naples that only visits Mt Vesuvius (see here ). So if you have just 4-5 hours to spare, this could be a nice short excursion from Naples.

Alternatively, you can also opt for a bus transfer from Ercolano (near Herculaneum) or from Pompeii . You’ll usually see buses to Mt Vesuvius near the entrance of Pompeii, just be sure they actually include the entrance to the site and not just the bus transfer (or book this Mt Vesuvius tour from Pompeii )!

In Ercolano , you’ll find the Vesuvio Express bus transfer service near the Ercolano Scavi railway station. You have to get a ticket for the bus , but keep in mind that you still need to book the Mt Vesuvius entrance ticket as well (and be sure that the times correspond). TIP: You can simply book a bus transfer and a ticket together (it costs a bit more, but it’s so much easier).

The beautiful Capri is probably the most famous island in Italy. It’s so pretty that the scenery here will take your breath away! It’s even more beautiful in summer when there are flowers everywhere and the color of the sky and the sea is picture-perfect.

While Capri absolutely deserves a longer visit, it can be easily visited on a day trip from Naples as well (see below for practical info). If you plan well, you can see some of the most beautiful and iconic places on Capri in just a day.

One of the most popular things to do in Capri is taking a boat tour around the island , plus a stop at the famous Blue Grotto .

In addition, visit Monte Solaro in Anacapri , Capri town center , and check out at least one or two viewpoints in Capri (we recommend Giardini do Augusto).

Capri island - best day trips from Naples Italy

Good to know: Capri isn’t a place to visit with a car. In the high season, tourists can’t bring a car to the island at all. You’ll need to take a boat/ferry to get here from Naples. Once on the island, you can use public buses or taxis.

Capri is a very popular day trip from Naples. Depending on which boat you opt for, the journey from Naples to Capri by boat takes 1-1.5 hours. Everyone goes in the morning and comes back in the evening, which means that the boats to/from Capri will be crowded and often fully booked for the peak times.

TIP: If you’re visiting Capri as a day trip from Naples in high season, try to book your tickets well in advance and opt for one of the first/last boats of the day. Or – if you are feeling overwhelmed trying to organize everything yourself – take an organized tour . Often, it’s the most convenient way and fastest to visit Capri in just a day, especially during the peak season.

4. Amalfi Coast

The picture-perfect Amalfi Coast is one of the most beautiful places in Italy and you could easily spend a week here. But since it’s relatively close to Naples (close enough to quickly visit on a day trip), many people also visit the Amalfi Coast for a day.

If a day is all you have and this is your only chance to see this stunning area, then definitely consider a day trip to the Amalfi Coast from Naples!

With a day on the Amalfi Coast, you can see 2 or 3 main towns – Positano, Amalfi, and possibly Ravello. In addition – depending on the season – you might also be able to do a boat trip along the coast. Many Amalfi Coast day tours also stop in Sorrento, which is a very nice town to see as well.

Amalfi town on the Amalfi Coast in Italy

Getting there: If there’s one place in this selection that I really wouldn’t recommend visiting on your own by car, it’s the Amalfi Coast. The traffic is crazy and parking is even worse. Instead, book a guided tour by bus , or take a boat tour (which is the best option in the high season).

Alternatively, you can also take a train from Naples to Sorrento and then a bus or a boat tour from Sorrento to the Amalfi Coast. However, this will require more planning, and I wouldn’t recommend this if you only have a day and are coming from Naples.

TIP: If you have more time in the area, stay in Sorrento instead of Naples. It’s easier to visit the Amalfi Coast and Capri from here, and Pompeii is just nearby too. In that case, check out our Amalfi Coast itinerary suggestions and Amalfi Coast travel tips .

5. Herculaneum

Herculaneum is an ancient archeological site near Naples. Just like Pompeii, this old Roman town was destroyed after the eruption of the Vesuvius volcano in 79 AD.

What makes Herculaneum worth visiting is that the town is extremely well preserved, better than Pompeii actually. It’s also a much smaller site so you can see everything in just a few hours (whereas with 2-3 hours in Pompeii, you just scratch the surface).

Furthermore, Herculaneum is just near the city and there’s an easy train connection. So it’s another destination that is doable as a half-day trip from Naples.

Ancient mosaics in Herculaneum, Italy

Good to know: Herculaneum is open daily except on Wednesdays. The archeological site is located just a short walk from the Ercolano Scavi railway station which has direct and frequent connections to Naples. The train ride from Naples to Ercolano takes just about 20 minutes. The walk from the station to the archeological site is just 5 minutes. This makes Herculaneum a popular excursion from Naples, also for people who prefer to travel without guided tours.

TIP: Book your tickets for Herculaneum online in advance. We didn’t think to do this and ended up in a long line waiting for the tickets, whereas the ‘online’ ticket desk was totally empty and people with reservations could just walk in without any wait. Online tickets are valid the whole day and aren’t timed, so it’s really simple.

While Herculaneum is not as big or overwhelming as Pompeii, it’s also a site that you’ll appreciate better if you have a bit more background information. If you want to make the most of your visit here, opt for an audio guide (it’s an extra option when you book entrance tickets) or book a guided tour .

Combination tours: Because Herculaneum doesn’t require more than a few hours, you can easily combine a visit to the nearby Mt Vesuvius (see the Mt Vesuvius section for more information). There is a highly-rated day tour from Naples that visits Pompeii and Herculaneum in one day. Alternatively, consider this tour that visits all three sites – Pompeii, Herculaneum, and Mt Vesuvius from Naples in one day.

Herculaneum is one of the most interesting day trips from Naples Italy

6. Royal Palace of Caserta

Often overlooked by first-time visitors, the Royal Palace of Caserta is another extremely interesting place to visit near Naples. The only reason this place is not as popular with international tourists as Pompeii or the Amalfi Coast is that there are so many amazing places to see near Naples that the competition is fierce. So most people don’t have the time to visit that many sights…

However, if you have a few hours to spare in Naples, a visit to the Royal Palace of Caserta is totally worth it. And because it’s not that far away from the city, it’s doable as a half-day trip from Naples as well.

The Royal Palace of Caserta is the largest royal palace in the world. It was inspired by the Palace of Versailles near Paris and built in the 18th century by the Bourbons who ruled over Naples and Sicily at that time.

There are three stunning royal palaces in Naples dating from the same period; the one in Caserta is by far the most impressive of them all. In addition to the opulent rooms of the palace itself, you can also visit the vast landscaped gardens with impressive fountains, sculptures, and some amazing hidden gems.

Gardens of the Royal Palace of Caserta - one of the most beautiful places to visit near Naples, Italy

Good to know: Caserta is just 45 minutes by train from Naples and the railway station is right next to the Royal Palace. You can easily come here on your own, but there is also a 4-hour guided tour from Naples.

Keep in mind that the grounds are huge, so take advantage of the shuttle bus (a small extra fee) that can bring you to the far end of the gardens. You can then visit the nicest features and also the English Garden and take the shuttle back, or walk back. Either way, don’t walk both ways or you’ll lose too much time. Renting a bike is also a very nice option, but bikes aren’t allowed inside the English Garden.

TIP: If you arrive by train/car, you could also opt for a guided tour of the palace . It’s not cheap, but we did this and found that it was totally worth it. We wouldn’t have seen half of the best places in the gardens without a guide. Also, the palace itself has so much to offer; going with a guide, you get a much better understanding of everything you see.

Naples day trips & tours – additional recommendations

If you have even more time in the Naples area (lucky you!), here are several additional suggestions for really nice day trip destinations near Naples:

  • Sorrento. Often combined with a visit to the Amalfi Coast (e.g. this popular tour ), Sorrento is a really nice town to visit near Naples. If you are taking a train to Pompeii, you could continue to Sorrento and visit both places in one day. You can also get to Sorrento by boat from Naples.
  • Procida. This is a small and very picturesque island just off the coast near Naples. Well worth it, especially in the warmest months. Here you can book a boat tour from Naples to Procida.
  • Ischia. This is the largest island in the Gulf of Naples and a destination in itself. However, you can also visit here for a day from Naples. In that case, take a boat to Sant’Angelo and spend a few hours there.

Best Things To Do in Naples, Italy

“You either love it or you hate it,” said a friend of mine. It was the first thing I ever heard about the Italian city of Naples, and the phrase’s authenticity remains intact after all these years. Naples is unlike any other city in Italy: It is busy, loud, and dirty on one hand (many people say it feels like stepping into a Middle-Eastern bazaar) and creative, friendly, and picturesque on the other.

Naples is probably one of the most controversial cities in Italy. People either love it or hate it, it seems. Italy’s third-largest city is famous for its Neapolitan Pizza and a gateway to Pompeii, but not many people actually choose to stay in Naples . But there are actually a lot of really interesting things to do in Naples, Italy.

Top Things to do in Naples Italy

Neapolitan pizza.

Yes, in Naples, Pizza is a point on the itinerary. Neapolitan-style pizza has been heralded the world over for being the true pizza, however, those who’ve been to Naples know that no two  pizzaioli  (pizza chefs) make the same pizza. In short, there is no one authentic Neapolitan-style pizza , though many will argue otherwise .  To discover which pizzaiolo’s pizza is your favorite, there’s no other way than by visiting Naples. Here are a few tips to help you on your way.

Some pizza chefs in Naples believe that there are only two kinds of pizza:  Margarita  and  Marinara . A marinara pizza, put simply, is dough, garlic, and sauce; and a Margarita pizza is dough, sauce, and cheese. While this doesn’t do much for the Hawaii-style pizza lover, don’t let the simplicity fool you; these are the makings of the best pizzas on earth.

Naples National Archeology Museum

Speaking of Pompeii, its most striking artworks were carried off to the National Archeology Museum . While this means that they are not on display in Pompeii (which is OK, in my opinion, because there is already plenty to see in Pompeii), it also ensures that they won’t be buried for another 1500 years the next time Mt. Vesuvius explodes.

Here’s my advice: Go to Pompeii first, then go to the National Archeology Museum. Is it worth it? Yes, yes, and yes. The artwork, statues, and artifacts are absolutely striking and give you yet another side to the fantastically preserved city. The museum also includes many of the statues from the Farnese Collection. The famous art collection is split up between the National Archeology Museum and Capodimonte Museum. To really appreciate the exhibits, you should definitely get the audio guide when you tour the museum.

Phlegrean Fields

One of the most confusing sights ever, the Phlegrean Fields is a large volcanic area, not a single location. It encompasses everything west of Naples (to the coast) as well as several islands, including the famous Ischia and Procida.

To do the area justice, you should spend at least two days there. The tickets (4 euro) give you access for two days. This includes, most importantly, the famous Cave of Sybil in Cuma, the striking crater lakes, the Flavian Amphitheater, and the Baia Archeology Museum and Park.

The tickets exclude, most importantly, the Solfatara, a bubbling lava lake once believed to be the entrance to hell, and the underwater city of Baia. The Solfatara costs an extra 6 euro, and the underwater city can only be seen from a glass-bottomed boat, which is easily chartered in Baia for a fee.

When you consider the sheer size of the Phlegrean Fields and the large number of exceptional sights, it seems like it’s worth a visit. But because the area is so spread out, and none of its ruins are as well preserved as those found in Pompeii and Herculaneum, the jury is divided.

If you have a limited time in Naples and you’ve never seen Pompeii, visiting the Phlegrean Fields is not worth it. If you’ve already seen Pompeii and you’ve got two spare days, expand your circle of ancient experience and see where the richest of the rich Romans once lived. The area’s volcanic activity has resulted in a large number of natural thermal spas.

Castles of Naples

Castel sant’elmo.

This medieval castle sits on top of a hill near Certosa di San Martino, overlooking the city of Naples. It was built between 1200-1537 and is still in use today.

Castel dell’Ovo

This seaside castle was built on the island of Megaride, which is now a peninsula in the bay of Napoli. Built in the 5th century, it is the oldest castle in Naples.

Castel Nuovo

The Castel Nuovo – also known as Maschio Angioino – is located right in the heart of Naples. It was built in 1279 and used as the royal seat for kings of Naples, Aragon, and Spain until 1815.

Capodimonte Museum

The grounds of this museum alone are enough to make it worth a visit. Located in a beautiful park on a hilltop that overlooks Naples, the museum was built for one reason, and one reason only: to house the  Farnese Collection . One of the most important art collections on earth, it includes works by many famous Italian painters and sculptors.

Its paintings are located inside the Capodimonte Museum, and its sculptures are in the National Archeology Museum. Many works are featured besides those of the Farnese Collection, including some excellent Caravaggios. A portion of the museum is dedicated to contemporary art, including some freaky Andy Warhols. The Capodimonte Museum is definitely worth it.

The Royal Palace in Caserta

A 40-minute train ride gets you to Caserta, and the trains leave Naples central station every 20-30 minutes. The Royal Palace is located across the street from the Caserta train station, making it easy to visit on foot. The palace was built by Charles of Bourbon, who was King of Naples in the mid-18th century. He wanted it to be more grand than Versailles.

I’m not sure whether his architect, Luigi Vanvitelli, failed, or whether the grounds are not well kept, but I found the palace bland. The hedges and the grass were not closely manicured, and very few flowers were in bloom. From the outside, the palace did not impress me in any way other than its sheer size. Inside, the rooms were beautifully decorated.

Besides having a picnic on the lawn—with a 40-meter manmade waterfall cascading in the distance—my favorite part of the visit was the gold leafing and ancient Venetian glasswork inside. Entrance costs 8 euro. The grounds are so large that a bus service runs around the grounds; a round-trip ticket (from the castle to the end of the grounds and back) costs 1 euro.

I suggest immediately catching the bus and taking it to the far end of the grounds; indulge in the English Garden, then walk back beside the waterway. Buses leaving from the palace and going out to the grounds are not crowded; coming back is another story. Is the Royal Palace in Caserta worth it? Not unless you’re traveling with children

Underground City of Naples Italy

Ok, so I’ve come around to accepting that there are other things to do in Naples than eat pizza. It was tough though and took something as tremendous as Naples Underground, or Napoli Sotterranea, to prove it to me. It’s as creepy as any underworld tale, but there’s a friendly guide to take you through the twisting, winding passages below the streets of Naples.

Underground of Naples Tickets

There are a number of  Naples underground tours , each beginning in different parts of the city, with each tour revealing different sections of Naples Underground. The tour my girlfriend and I took featured the underground remains of a Greek-Roman theater. It began in the vicinity of the Duomo di Napoli.

The small gift shop at the ticket office has a window in the floor that offers a glimpse into the world below. English language tours leave throughout the day, and when we arrived without reservations, we only had to wait 15 minutes for the next tour. I can now attest that the experience is well worth your time and money.

Naples Underground Tour

We followed our guide down a deep, long stairway until reaching a series of large rooms with towering ceilings. Our guide explained the ancient method of constructing homes in the area over 2400 years ago, which created the underground city that we were now walking through. The inhabitants dug large holes to excavate stone that they then used to construct houses. The large holes were subsequently used as wells.

After enough people had populated the area, there were so many wells that they were connected to create massive underground aqueducts. At one point, the aqueduct was so large that it connected Naples to Rome, a distance of nearly 140 miles.

The aqueducts were eventually closed down when cholera swept through Europe and they were never again used to provide drinking water. During WWII, some of the people in Naples decided to use the underground city as a bomb shelter; creepy toys and graffiti from that time period can still be seen.

A few of the rooms are still used today, some for biology experiments, and some to serve as a venue for art shows. There were also rooms with water in them, making for a stunning visual experience.

Explore by candlelight

My favorite part of the tour was the candle-lit trip through some very narrow passages. This part of the tour, however, may not appeal to people of large bearing or those with claustrophobia. Everyone in the group is given a candle and taken on a short journey through thin passages and into a room that features some pretty incredible sights.

I’m going to leave those sights a secret, however. I can’t give it all away! The tour guides are very good at creating fun surprises and I wouldn’t want to ruin the anticipation and excitement for readers who will one day take the tour.

Though the underground city has been mapped for over fifty years, the endeavor still struggles to raise enough money to unearth more of its incredible remains. When our guide showed me a map that depicted the size of the underground city, I was amazed to find that it stretched well beyond the current borders of Naples. Our tour, we were told, includes less than 1% of the giant, Naples Underground.

Is Naples Worth a Visit?

Naples is unlike any other city in Italy: It is busy, loud, and dirty on one hand (many people say it feels like stepping into a Middle-Eastern bazaar) and creative, friendly, and picturesque on the other.

It is definitely not a quiet, romantic Italian town like Siena or Verona. Threats of pickpockets and a pervasive garbage problem keep many travelers from even visiting the city, while a one-of-a-kind culinary scene, inexpensive shopping, and a vibrant waterfront make it a must-see for others. If you haven’t guessed already, I fall in the latter group.

The first time I visited Naples, I was immediately taken aback by its sheer bustle. I still attest to seeing a family of six—with a pet—whiz past me on a moped. The streets are small and the traffic is frantic. And the large outdoor market in front of the central train station is overwhelming and seemingly chaotic. However, once I became accustomed to the energy of Naples, I discovered the unique qualities that fueled it.

The people in Naples are friendly and welcoming, and always willing to help. For example, the clerk at the hotel where I usually stay is always giving guests tips on the best things to see and do. He also warns of pickpockets and provides extensive advice on how to carry money and cameras. In the stores and restaurants, people are quick to ask you where you are from and to welcome you to their city.

Naples Castles, Markets, and Architecture

The things to do in Naples are its two castles, the Naples National Archaeological Museum—considered the most important archeological museum in Italy—, tours of its underground city Sotterranea, and a waterfront full of beautiful sailboats and traditional fishing boats. The bay of Naples, on which the city sits, provides a clear view of the ancient Vesuvius volcano that buried the nearby city of Pompeii in 79AD. The Castle dell’Ovo is located on a tiny island that is joined to Naples by a short bridge and is free to visit. Castle Nuovo , which costs 5 euro to enter, is the more striking castle, with ancient stonework and dramatic towers.

Finally, the architecture of Naples won’t be forgotten, as huge churches, cathedrals, and other strutures of Medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque periods are found throughout the city. My favorite spots are the Piazza Dante , which boasts a great statue of Dante, and the Piazza del Plebiscito (especially at night). With Naples, I’ve found that looking beyond the crumbling apartment buildings provides an exciting glimpse into a city that is truly unlike any other on earth.

The markets in Naples are a great place to find clothes, shoes, purses, sunglasses, hats, and so on. However, they are known for pickpockets, so keep your money hidden or spread out between different pockets. If you try on shoes, the venders will provide you a seat. And, bartering is a way of life in the markets, so never pay the listed price.

Foods to try in Naples

From a culinary perspective, Naples offers traditional Italian foods that cannot be found anywhere else—not even in other Italian cities. Neapolitan pizza is, of course, at the forefront and you have your pick of top pizzerias in Naples .

The street food, which is sold from open storefronts around every corner, is some of the best in Italy. Fried panini stuffed with meats and cheeses, arancini (deep-fried risotto balls stuffed with mozzarella), calzones, and an assortment of fried vegetables and potatoes (sold for 30 cents a piece), should not be missed.

Further, the pastries in Naples are incredible. Sfogliatelle is a horn-shaped pastry that looks like it is made with circles of layered flakey crusts. Traditional biscotti are also served, though bear no resemblance to the dried, crunchy biscotti found in the United States. And espresso in Naples is definitively some of the best in Italy.

As you can see, Naples is worth a visit and there are plenty of attractions to keep you busy for a few days and fill the time between Pizzas.

Okay -- thank you all so much. Panic attack is now officially over.

audrey m - You have a good trip too, and I laughed at your description of pre-trip anxiety. I do plan to add Procida as a day trip and think I will add Oplontis as well to the Herculaneum trip.

elstravels and Kuroneko: I'm adding Caserta and Santa Maria Caputa Vetere to the list of day trips, and am also looking into the villas that you mentioned.

joseph c - thank you for your reassurance and suggestion - the archaeological museum was on my list.

Dusibello and GM- I loved your comments!

MCat - Thanks so much for your reassurance. The Pedamentina steps were already on my list. I actually have a single-spaced 20+ page Naples itinerary that I prepared. It includes many of the lesser-known sites and all of the better-known sites (Castel Nuovo, Palazzo Reale, Capella Sansevero, the various underground tours (Napoli Sotterranea, Galleria Borbonica , La Neapolis Sotterrata, Catacombe di San Gaudioso, etc.), Museo Archaeological Nazionale, Museo E Real Bosco Di Capodimonte, Certoza di San Martino, Castel San' Elmo, Complesso Monumentale di Santa Chiara , as well as just wandering and hopefully avoiding scooters. In fact, now that I look again at my itinerary, I realize that I probably don't even have enough time in 9 days to see everything that I want to see.

Thank you all again! I now feel very comfortable with my current plan.

How to plan a solo female trip to milan, italy.

Milan is a wonderful destination for solo female travel in Italy.

Based on post-pandemic tourism data compiled by Italy’s tourist board , planning vacations to the the beloved Mediterranean country has never been more popular. While cities like Rome and Venice will always remain bucket list destinations, what should you do if you’re a solo female traveler looking for an Italian city that’s less crowded, safe, and just as beguiling?

Consider Milan. Italy's second-largest city has long been dismissed as the country’s design and fashion capital, but in reality, there’s far more to Milan’s appeal than Salone del Mobile and Miuccia Prada. From historic attractions to fantastic food, the city is an underrated gem. Plus, getting around is a breeze thanks to inexpensive public transportation, including Milano Centrale—which has several hundred domestic trains departing daily so you can see more of Italy.

Here, a handy guide on how to plan a safe and unforgettable solo female trip to Milan.

Where to Stay

Hotel NH Collection Milano CityLife pays homage to the church it occupies, 1934's Chiesa del Cristo ... [+] Re.

Anchored by three architectural masterpieces from Zaha Hadid Architects, Daniel Libeskind, and Arata Isozaki, CityLife is a mixed-use development that’s home to stylish shops, enticing restaurants, and as of 2022, one of Milan’s buzziest new hotels, Hotel NH Collection Milano CityLife . Spread across two structures including Chiesa del Cristo Re, a 1934 neoclassical-style church, the 185-key hotel offers a stay that’s removed enough from Milan’s city center to ensure peace and quiet, but close enough to access by foot.

The first unintended consequence of ai and it s huge, israel s attack on iran doesn t look unprecedented.

Hotel NH Collection Milano CityLife's exterior lounge and reception area

The gleaming all-white structure’s original facade, arches, and soaring columns were carefully restored to nod to Chiesa del Cristo Re’s previous life. The design ethos flows indoors to the main lobby, where seven-meter-high bronze elements resembling organ pumps make the mundane act of checking in a grand one.

However, religion isn’t the only source of inspiration for Hotel NH Collection Milano CityLife. The city’s fashion legacy is woven into the property’s signature restaurant and lounge Tailors. Lovely for an aperitivo—which in true Italian style arrive with salty nibbles like Taralli and potato chips—a sophisticated dinner of housemade duck ragu paccheri drizzled with a Vacche Rosse Parmigiano Reggiano bechamel, or the daily breakfast spread, Tailors celebrates craftsmanship in the kitchen. When the weather warms up, zip up to the roof, where one of only two hotel rooftop pools in Milan and chic al fresco bar await.

NH Collection Milano Citylife has ten duplex suites outfitted with private terraces and hot tubs.

Though the guest rooms skew snug (as do many European hotels), they’re smartly laid out. On top of that: the low-slung beds are dreamy; the branded NH bathroom amenities incorporate sustainable packaging and formulas; and the ceiling-to-floor windows bathe the space in natural light for a more open feel. In the mood to splurge? Then reserve one of the hotel’s ten duplex suites . Cloaked in calming earth tones, they sport one-of-a-kind configurations and come with private terraces and hot tubs.

Federico Vaccari leads personalized tours of his hometown Milan in a beautiful restored vintage ... [+] Fiat 500.

If you’ve been to Milan before, and want to discover a lesser-known side of the city, book a private tour with Federico Vaccari . Over the course of three hours, Vaccari will scoot you around in a beautiful restored vintage Fiat 500 and reveal spots travelers rarely get to see, like Via Abramo Lincoln’s candy-colored houses. Since the car can only hold two passengers, it’s especially well-suited for solo female travelers.

For first-timers: no visit would be complete without seeing the Duomo, Milan's most famous cathedral, and enjoying expansive city views from the rooftop. Teatro alla Scala and Santa Maria delle Grazie, home of Leonardo Da Vinci's famous Last Supper painting, are other cultural landmarks worth scoping out. For retail therapy, head to Milan’s legendary fashion district Milan's Quadrilatero and Via della Spiga. Reserved for pedestrians, this glamorous strip showcases Italy’s biggest fashion houses such as Prada and Moschino. (Bring your passport to enjoy tax-free shopping.)

Where to Eat

Panzerotti is one of Milan's most popular snacks.

Despite being frequently overshadowed by Naples, Rome, and Bologna, Milan is a worthy dining destination in its own right. As of 2023, it’s home to 17 Michelin-starred restaurants like Rome, which run the gamut from Enrico Bartolini ’s innovating tasting menus to IYO , where modern Japanese fare with European flourishes take center stage.

Bice remains a city stalwart for classic Tuscan fare (Ossobuco alla Milanese, Ribollita) and Federico Delrosso’s timeless design, while Peck has attracted discriminating palates since 1883 with an extensive (and immaculately presented) selection of gourmet meats, prepared foods, cheese, sweets, and wines. Ciacco turns out high-quality, small-batch gelato in classic and experimental flavors like the Robiola-infused “Almost Cheesecake.” For a quick bite to go, Panzo has you covered with made-to-order panzerotti, a traditional Puglian snack of fried dough stuffed with melty cheese and tomatoes.
