Go On A Wild Safari Adventure At Atlanta’s Fully Immersive Attraction “Illuminarium”

Adron McCann | WABE

June 24th, 2021

Perhaps you’ve spent time on the Atlanta BeltLine’s East Side Trail — it’s a lovely and transporting space in the heart of the city, but unlikely to contain any inter-dimensional portals. That is, until July 2021, when the new fully immersive experience-based attraction Illuminarium is set to open on the BeltLine off of Ralph McGill Boulevard. At its first exhibit, “ WILD: Safari Experience , ” visitors will explore a virtual African landscape that activates all the senses, even smell. The attraction’s interactive environments respond to visitors’ movements using an array of cutting-edge technologies. Illuminarium CEO Alan Greenberg and Executive Vice President of Technology and Content Brian Allen joined “City Lights” Senior Producer Kim Drobes to describe the new attraction and how it was created.

Interview highlights:

Why immersive, and why the BeltLine?

“I think it’s no secret that there are some amazing experiences that have opened all over the world,” Greenberg said. “Things like Team Lab in Tokyo, and Atelier des LumiĂšres in Paris, and Meow Wolf in Santa Fe. And we saw these trends, in what some people call the experience economy, and thought we could do something really special.”

“We saw the location on the BeltLine and it just felt perfect,” Greenberg said. “We just loved the energy — you know, when you’re on the BeltLine you’re kind of on an adventure, and we just loved that vibe. So, when we saw it, we went, ‘We’re going to put the world’s first Illuminarium here. We were actually looking in New York City for a long time to find the right spot, but when we saw this one, we said, ‘Let’s start here.’”

What is Illuminarium?

“What I like to say is, we have created, and are creating, a new media format,” Allen said. “We have a very large and beautiful canvas for audio, video, interaction, a true multisensory experience. And the advent of multiple technologies, including native 4k laser projection, audio tech capabilities, interactive capabilities powered by lidar, scent capabilities, allowed me and the team to really layer technologies together, to be more of a supporting character for the content that gets displayed.”

“When you walk into an Illuminarium, when you come to our Safari experience, you’re going to see it like reality, you’re going to hear it in an extraordinary way, you’re going to feel it, because of the haptic systems in our floor that give you
a rumble effect in your body, you’re going to smell it through our sense systems, and you’re actually going to affect it, through the lidar interactive system,” Greenberg said. “So when you’re walking down a dirt path, on our floors you’ll actually pick up dust as you walk
when you walk on the surface of the moon, you’ll actually leave footprints.”

Like virtual reality, but communal:

“Illuminarium is, in many ways, VR without the glasses, or without the headset,” Greenberg said. “And what that allows you to do, is to have a shared experience
to go to Africa with somebody, as you typically would, and to share those ‘wow’ moments, those head-turning moments of life.

“We think there’s never been a better time for people to come back together in a communal experience, which you just can’t do with VR.”

If you haven't been able to score tickets to the immensely popular immersive Van Gogh art exhibit happening in Chicago , San Francisco, Los Angeles, and a host of other cities this summer, you may still have another option to envelop yourself in a different world.

Illuminarium, a new immersive entertainment experience, aims to bring the African safari to life in Atlanta . Illuminarium's "Wild: Safari Experience" is scheduled to open on July 1 and designed to take visitors to Botswana, Kenya, Tanzania, and South Africa — without requiring them to leave the city or spend hours on a plane.

Visitors will have the chance to get up close with elephants and lions — members of Africa's famous Big Five — inside a 30,000-square-foot venue designed to immerse them in the sights, sounds, even smells of safari life . They'll be taken to bucket-list destinations, including Kenya's Masai Mara — best known for its wildebeest migration — and Kruger National Park in South Africa.

The exhibit is a way to "transport consumers to many of the most coveted places and experiences on Earth, and beyond," according to the company's CEO Alan Greenberg.

These types of experiences have been especially popular during the pandemic. "Immersive Van Gogh" is sold out in Los Angeles until October, and organizers added additional tickets in Chicago and Los Angeles to accommodate for high customer demand.

Another Illuminarium experience is planned for Atlanta in 2022, and it's designed to take visitors on a space walk, giving them a chance to come as close as most people are likely to get to setting foot on the moon. Additional Illuminarium experiences are planned for Las Vegas and Miami in 2022 as well. The former will kick off at Area15 in January, while the latter is scheduled to open in the Florida city's Wynwood Arts District come spring.

Tickets for "Wild: Safari Experience" go on sale on Monday, May 24, at Illuminarium.com . Prices start at $30 for kids and $35 for adults, with premium packages available.

Illuminarium, an ‘immersive’ entertainment experience, opening in Atlanta this summer

Atlanta entrepreneur, creator, and operator of interactive and traditional media Alan Greenberg discusses transporting guests to a wild safari as one of their experiences during a tour of Illuminarium, a virtual reality entertainment emporium. Curtis Compton / Curtis.Compton@ajc.com

Credit: Curtis Compton / Curtis.Compton@

Alan Greenberg’s five decades in business have led him to own Esquire magazine, a medical news service for doctors , a travel booking c ompany and for-profit private schools .

Now the 70-year-old Atlanta entrepreneur has set his sights on the tourism world with what he dubs the Illuminarium, a new Atlanta-based multi-sensory immersive experience that could take people on an African safari, place them on the surface of the moon or inside the Great Barrier Reef.

“We’re democratizing extraordinary experiences,” said Greenberg, CEO of Greenberg Ventures . “Most people have never been on a safari.”

Tickets will be priced between $30 to $40 before discounts. Advance tickets go on sale in early May, but you can visit illuminarium.com for presale access.

Greenberg aims to open the Atlanta Illuminarium by July. (The pandemic, he said, delayed opening by about six months.)

By day, the Illuminarium will be a traditional tourist attraction, where school children and out-of-towners will watch an intro in a smaller space followed by a 45-minute “spectacle” show in the big space. During the safari show, for instance, you’ll be able to feel the elephants rumble by you and thunder during a storm. As you walk around, you may leave behind footprints or ripples in puddles. If you approach a tree on the wall, you might cause a flock of birds to fly away. And there will be safari-like smells piped in to enhance the experience. None of this will require virtual reality headgear.

At night, both spaces could be used for lounge space, corporate parties, cocktail outings or wedding receptions. The backdrops could become a faux Paris, London or Tokyo or something purely fantastical, fitting up to 1,000 people. There will also be a restaurant open to the public with plenty of outdoor seating.

The first Illuminarium is located in Poncey-Highland right off the Beltline, with similar spaces set to open later in Las Vegas and Miami. Greenberg hopes to have as many as 50 worldwide within five years.

In many ways, this is a step up from the IMAX movie experience, available in 1,500-plus theaters in more than 80 countries.

“It’s like IMAX 2.0,” said Doug Lansky , a Stockholm, Sweden-based tourist and destination consultant who has visited more than 120 countries. He said entrepreneurs in theme parks, planetariums and museums have been offering immersive experiences for decades.

Current technology, he noted, “brings us ever closer to that ‘Star Trek’ holodeck experience. How well they do will also come down to how clever the programming is. And it looks like something that can be easily updated and upgraded.”

There is a clear demand for this type of experience. Advance sales for “Van Gogh The Immersive Experience” at The Pratt Pullman Yard in Kirkwood have been astounding, with 150,000 tickets already sold since February. It doesn’t even open until May 19 and will be there through the end of 2021.

It features 40-foot projections of Vincent Van Gogh’s paintings and a separate virtual reality tour of Auvers-sur-Oise, France.

“I’ve never seen anything like this” in terms of early ticket sales, said John Zaller, president of Immersive Hub in Atlanta, who has overseen other visiting immersive experiences in the past in Atlanta including one about the Titanic in 2006 at the Atlanta Civic Center and Dialog in the Dark at Atlantic Station in 2012. “It’s very exciting. We have an amazing immersive experience that’s also built for social distancing. Even before the pandemic, we’ve had limited capacity. We will always keep it at 25% of the building’s capacity.”

Plus, he added, “This is a year when we aren’t traveling to Europe. We’re instead bringing Europe to the people of Atlanta and giving them a reason to come out and celebrate art and culture again.”

Greenberg said an immersive art installation in Paris by a different company actually inspired him to do the Illuminarium.

Transporting visitors into space is one of the visions of Atlanta entrepreneur Alan Greenberg during a tour of Illuminarium. Curtis Compton / Curtis.Compton@ajc.com

For this project, he linked up with some heavy hitters. Illuminarium is using Panasonic 4K projection technology in conjunction with New York-based production company RadicalMedia and New York-based high-end design firm the Rockwell Group . RadicalMedia spent months in Africa shooting film of safari animals used in the first spectacle. Greenberg’s operations partner is Los Angeles-based Legends , which operates 150 venues including Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, New York, and AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, and recently signed a partnership with Georgia Tech athletics .

Greenberg said his company is specifically based in Atlanta, where he has children and grandchildren. The company’s R&D lab is based here as well. It’s where his creative team works on new spectacles and tests out the latest technological advances to make the experiences even more immersive. He said he has raised $60 million from investors all over the world.

Greenberg has been in close contact with the Atlanta Convention and Visitors Bureau to help market the new attraction. He hopes to eventually package it with existing staple tourist sites such as the Georgia Aquarium, the Atlanta Zoo and the Coke Museum. He is also planning to spend in excess of $1 million in advertising this year across digital, TV and print, along with billboards, covering all demographics in Atlanta and cities within driving distance.

ACVB president William Pate said he’s looking forward to this addition to the Atlanta tourism scene. He likes that there is usable event space, “which gives our convention clients another fantastic option for booking events” and the Beltline location “allows residents and visitors to explore Atlanta’s culinary scene and great local neighborhoods.”

Carrie Burns, who used to run Atlanta Movie Tours, has spoken to executives at Legends and thinks the Illuminarium will be “wildly successful. Atlanta needs more attractions. They may have a little challenge with the local market but from a tourism perspective, its placement on the Beltline should help give it a lot of attention.”

Visitors receive a glimpse of Illuminarium in Atlanta before its scheduled opening date in July. Curtis Compton / Curtis.Compton@ajc.com

At his age, Greenberg could be chilling in Florida, working on his golf game. Instead, he’s joyfully juggling marketing, operations, construction and hiring for a multi-million dollar space.

“This is my fifth company,” Greenberg said. “There’s nothing like launching a new company and putting smiles on people’s faces. I’m very jazzed doing what we’re doing. This is my most interesting venture to date and hopefully a capstone on my career.”

Illuminarium’s immersive venues will transport millions of visitors to places they only dream of experiencing by placing them “inside” the narrative with techniques used in traditional motion picture production and virtual reality that facilitate the experience of real world, filmed content (like a safari) and authentic, re-created worlds in an immersive environment, all without wearable hardware.

During the evening, Thursday-Saturday, Illuminarium will transform into a dynamic bar that features an immersive generative environment, allowing guests to have cocktails and curated eats surrounded by an ever-changing lush and stunning atmosphere. Through state-of-the-art projection and audio systems, guests will be invited to gather in a different far-flung and fantastic setting.

Visitors can also experience The Illuminarium Café, offering both indoor seating and an outdoor patio facing the BeltLine. The café will be an extension of the immersive experience content, serving authentic dishes, beer, and wine from the African continent, along with local southern favorites. The Illuminarium Shop will retail a wide variety of gifts inspired by the safari experience. Along with souvenirs like eco-friendly plush toys and items with a specific conservation give-back, the shop will carry unique items such as woven baskets, beaded jewelry, and hand-carved wooden decor sourced from artisan networks in Kenya, Tanzania, and South Africa. Both the café and shop are open to the public and do not require paid admission to the attraction.

Following Atlanta, Illuminarium will open in Las Vegas at AREA 15 in January 2022 and in Miami, at Mana in the Wynwood Arts District, in fall 2022. Other North American locations under consideration are New York City, Chicago, Toronto, Montreal, Los Angeles and Austin.

Illuminarium will design and operate each spectacle in an environmentally conscious manner that acknowledges its social impact. For WILD, Illuminarium partnered with global conservation organization, WildArk , to work collaboratively with local partners and communities to protect prioritized wildlife, biodiversity and ecosystems around the world. Illuminarium will donate a portion of all ticket and merchandising revenue annually to WildArk. Through this strategic partnership, WildArk targets this funding, as well as additional donations made at Illuminarium, to aligned conservation partners working to protect prioritized wildlife and their habitats across Africa. Illuminarium will also provide opportunities for customers to become personally engaged with WildArk and other mission-based partners they bring to the experience.

LAST CALL to save up to 30% on tickets to the Illuminarium in Atlanta

' src=

The world’s first Illuminarium — featuring a new kind of immersive experience —  opened in Atlanta on July 1, 2021. The first exhibit there is WILD: A Safari Experience , and tickets are on sale now (see ticket info below).

If you haven’t been to this venue yet, or would like to visit again, there’s a TravelZoo deal that lets you save on tickets. See the details below.

Ground-breaking technology will allow you to step off the BeltLine Eastside Trail and on to the African continent. You’ll come face-to-face with some of the world’s most exotic animals — brought to life through laser projections on a 360-degree canvas that surrounds you and places you at the watering holes, the grassland, and the forest.

Unlike virtual reality, you don’t need a headset or special glasses. In that way, it’s a shared experience.

The exhibit is designed to involve all of your senses, through 3-D surround sound and in-floor haptics that let you feel the thud of an elephant’s footsteps. Even scent is piped in, to give you a strong sense of place.

We’ve seen these experiential exhibits quickly become a trend, as the pandemic made travel more problematic. So, while Illuminarium tickets are not particularly cheap by our usual standards here (they start at $30/child and $35/adult), they are far less expensive than an actual safari.

Because there has never been an Illuminarium before, the images and video you see here are all artistic renderings that were supplied in press materials. We’re invited to a media preview this week, and will update with actual photos as soon as we can!

About Illuminarium

It’s exciting that Illuminarium has chosen Atlanta as the spot for its very first venue! The creators said in a media interview that they fell in love with the energy of the Atlanta BeltLine, after having a hard time finding a suitable spot in New York City.

Illuminarium has plans to open locations in Las Vegas in January and in Miami in the fall of 2022. Other future sites are being considered in New York, Chicago, Toronto, Montreal, Los Angeles, and Austin.

Visual effects, gentle floor vibration, immersive sound, and laser projection are all part of the experience — but nothing is designed to be purposely frightening.

There is also an Illuminarium After Dark experience, as well as a café and shop onsite. Details are below.

No closing date has been set for WILD. However, Illuminarium plans to premiere its next exhibit, SPACEWALK, some time in 2022.

According to the press release , Illuminarium will design and operate each spectacle in an environmentally conscious manner that acknowledges its social influence.

Illuminarium Atlanta is located in the Common Ground complex, between TWO Urban Licks and New Realm Brewery. It is directly accessible from the Atlanta BeltLine Eastside Trail. ADDRESS: 550 Somerset Terrace NE Atlanta, GA 30306 See info below on Getting There & Parking

Advance purchase is strongly encouraged right now. Walk-ups can purchase tickets if any space is available for the next entry time.

Tickets for the standard experience are: * Adults — $35 * Children 3-12 — $30 * Seniors (65+) — $32.50 NOTE that taxes and fees add about $4.50 to each ticket Buy tickets online

These upgraded experiences are also available:

♩ Combo Experience includes:

  • Admission to WILD: A Safari Experience
  • WILD safari guidebook (your complete guide to the safari experience)
  • One takeaway snack or soft drink
  • starts at $35/child and $40/adult)

♩ All-Inclusive Experience includes:

Buy the TravelZoo deal To get the deal, you’ll be asked to become a TravelZoo member, which is free, but you’ll need to manage the emails you want to receive.

You can buy Illuminarium tickets through Groupon — although it’s not exactly offering a discount on the actual ticket price. HOWEVER, you can save up to $6 per adult ticket because Groupon does not add sales tax or any fees to its prices.

Note that Groupon is not offering a lower price for kids age 3 to 12. So, for comparison, a child’s ticket thru Illuminarium comes to $34.30 with tax and fees, while you’d pay $35 even thru Groupon. Still, you can come out ahead buying thru Groupon if there are more adults in your party than kids.

Groupon prices are as follows: * Standard experience — $35 (no added fees) * Combo experience — $40 (no added fees) * All-inclusive experience — $50 (no added fees)

It will captivate all your senses with sights, sounds, and smells you would experience if you were on an actual safari in the Motherland.

Participants in the experience will visit Kenya’s Masaai Mara national game reserve as well as South Africa’s Kruger National Park. “Wild: Safari Experience” opens on July 1. Children’s tickets start at $30 while adults’ start at $35. Tickets are on sale now at  Illuminarium.com .

Illuminarium CEO Alan Greenberg promises experiences that will “transport consumers to many of the most coveted places and experiences on Earth, and beyond.”

Another Illuminarium experience coming to Atlanta in 2022 will take visitors to outer space, giving them the opportunity to “walk on the moon.” The company will also be bringing experiences to Las Vegas’ Area15 in January, as well as to Miami’s Wynwood Arts District next Spring.

Throughout the pandemic, many safari lodges across Africa pivoted to virtual experiences, to allow animal enthusiasts to feel close to their favorite wild cats and the big 5. As countries begin allowing international visitors, we are sure in-person safari experiences will resume as well.

Illuminarium Experiences Atlanta

Virtual reality, for all its hype and hope, hasn’t exactly taken the entertainment world by storm. Now a new venture is looking to deliver on VR’s promise of virtually transporting you to another time and place — but without the awkward headset, so you can have a shared, communal experience.

The company, Illuminarium Experiences, is promising to deliver breathtaking cinematic walk-through exhibits, featuring 4K video on gigantic screens, state-of-the-art spatial sound systems, haptic flooring, interactive features (e.g., “dust” might kick up as you walk by), and even “authentic scents” that will let you get a whiff of your virtual surroundings.

On July 1, Illuminarium ( illuminarium.com ) is set to open its first location in Atlanta, on the city’s BeltLine . The first “experience” that will be available to the public will be “Wild,” a virtual safari taking you to Africa through cinematic content shot by production firm RadicalMedia . Tickets start at $35 apiece, which will give you about an hour to walk through the experience in an 8,000-square-foot room (the same way you would walk through a museum). For the $50-per-person “all-inclusive” ticket, customers will get a Wild Safari Guidebook, a $10 voucher for the Illuminarium Café or gift shop, and flexible entry time.

“We are uniquely set up to take people to places they may never imagine being able to go,” says RadicalMedia CEO Jon Kamen . His media company shot the performances of “Hamilton” that became the film released in 2020 on Disney Plus, in addition to numerous other TV, film, digital and experiential productions.

Kamen has delved into VR productions in the past. But as a viewer he always found the technology cumbersome and the overall experience disappointing. With Illuminarium, he says, “I wanted to pursue something that is more of a communal experience. It’s VR without goggles.”

To form Illuminarium Experiences, Kamen and RadicalMedia teamed up with production designer and architect David Rockwell, the Tony winner who created sets for the 2021 Oscars , and his Rockwell Group firm. They then connected with investor Alan Greenberg, who is the co-founder of Avenues: The World School, Greenberg News Networks, Travel Holdings and former publisher of Esquire magazine, to head the company as CEO.

The Illuminarium partners have landed $100 million in initial funding, with a significant investment from Eldridge, the holding company headed by Todd Boehly. (Disclosure: Eldridge owns MRC, which last year formed a joint venture with PMC that brings together Variety , the Hollywood Reporter, Rolling Stone, Billboard, Vibe and Music Business Worldwide.)

Illuminarium’s immersive content will be original productions from RadicalMedia. The “Wild” safari spectacle cost about $10 million, according to Greenberg. The RadicalMedia crew used custom camera arrays that provide a 240-degree native field of view, shot on location to showcase animals in their native habitats across South Africa, Botswana, Kenya and Tanzania.

Next up: “Spacewalk,” billed by the company as “a mind-blowing journey through our Solar System,” letting visitors stroll across Moon and Mars. A third experience the partners are contemplating would take visitors into the depths of the world’s oceans.

Greenberg, Illuminarium’s CEO, dismisses any comparisons between its experience spaces and movie theaters.

“It’s not a movie,” he maintains. “You’re going to be able to walk on the surface of the Moon!”

Meanwhile, a core piece of the company’s business model is to promote its locations as nightlife destinations: Illuminarium After Dark, designed and developed by the LAB at Rockwell Group, will be a bar scene like no other, Greenberg promises — letting visitors experience different virtual settings, from a Tokyo city street to fantastical dreamscapes. Illuminarium spaces also will be available to rent out for private events, per Greenberg.

To staff its retail locations, the company’s operational partner is Legends, which manages operations at more than 150 sports arenas, attractions, experiences and other venues worldwide.

The Illuminarium partners have aggressive plans to roll out its locations around the world. Following Atlanta, the company plans to open open locations in Las Vegas at AREA 15 in January 2022 and in Miami, at Mana in the Wynwood Arts District, in spring 2022. Other North American locations under consideration are New York, Chicago, Toronto, Montreal, Los Angeles and Austin.

“As we expand internationally, we have to be aware of what translates culturally,” Kamen notes.

In the Illuminarium experiences, visitors are completely surrounded by a massive canvas — 350 feet in length and 22 feet high. Some of the company’s tech vendors include Panasonic, the exclusive visual provider of native 4K projectors, displays and camera solutions; Holoplot, which is providing proprietary beamforming and wavefield synthesis technology with the ability to localize and isolate sound across the Illuminarium venue so visitors receive individualized sound experiences based on where they are standing; Ouster, which is providing its OS0 ultra-wide-view lidar sensor to be responsive to guests’ movements (e.g. if someone waves their hand or moves their foot); and Powersoft, which provides a haptic infrasound floor that produces realistic sensations for visitors, such as the ground-shaking feel of an elephant stomp or the low-end frequency of a lion’s roar.

Kamen admits to some trepidation as the July 1 opening of the Illuminarium in Atlanta approaches. “If you build it, will they come?” he asks rhetorically.

The pandemic added a layer of complexity to construction for the Illuminarium locations as well as travel. “But we might we unbelievably lucky to have always planned to open July 1, 2021,” Kamen says with a laugh. “We could be benefitting from people dying to get out and do something.”

Immersive dinosaur experience entertains and transports families back to prehistoric ages

ATLANTA (Nov. 2, 2021) – Imagine Exhibitions brings a dinosaur-filled indoor experience to the Atlanta metro area for local families and visitors to get up-close and personal with larger-than-life replicas of the most fascinating, fan-favorite prehistoric inhabitants! Dino Safari: A Walk-Thru Adventure opens Nov.19, 2021, in Alpharetta’s North Point Mall.

Tickets go on sale on Nov. 2 and can be purchased at DinoSafari.com . The limited-engagement, experiential family walk-through attraction will run through April 8, 2022.

“Atlanta families will not want to miss Dino Safari,” said Tom Zaller, CEO of Imagine Exhibitions. “From the Sauropod Slide to interactive games and the sheer awe of giant moving dinosaurs, it’s the perfect activity for dinosaur fans of all ages to become immersed in an entertaining and educational globetrotting dinosaur adventure.”

In this walk-through adventure, attendees will meet and interact with more than 30 life-sized dinosaurs, including the T.rex of North America and the Spinosaurus from Africa. With the help of scientifically accurate installations and realistic moving animatronics, Dino Safari will transport guests back millions of years to get up close and personal with prehistoric creatures in a replica of their natural habitat.

Located in the upper level of North Point Mall, the experience showcases how dinosaurs evolved over time and offer hands-on challenges for visitors to solve, along with depictions of natural elements that often occurred during this time, such as earthquakes. The thrilling adventure features captivating VR technology, spectacular installations, and an interactive space for children. Limited birthday party rooms will also be available, visit DinoSafari.com for booking details.

The exhibition was created by Atlanta-based Imagine Exhibitions in collaboration with world-renowned Ph.D. Dinosaur Paleontologist Gregory M. Erickson, who is one of only 150 full-time professional dinosaur paleontologists in the world.

Dino Safari: A Walk-Thru Adventure — Review

Travel back in time to walk among the dinosaurs at Dino Safari: A Walk-Thru Adventure! This fun, family-friendly experience will let you get up-close and personal with your favorite dinosaurs. Learn more about the experience in this review of Dino Safari.

A special thanks to Imagine Exhibitions for providing us with tickets to Dino Safari: A Walk-Thru Adventure in Atlanta ! As always, all opinions are my own.

Grab your passport to Pangea and get ready to meet over 30 different species of dinosaurs!

This walk-through attraction was created by Atlanta-based Imagine Exhibitions (the same people who produced Harry Potter: The Exhibition ) in collaboration with Ph.D. Dinosaur Paleontologist Gregory M. Erickson.

The exhibit features realistic animatronic dinosaurs, scientific exploration, and fun interactive elements to immerse you in the prehistoric world of the dinosaur.

Ready to take a step back in time? Dino Safari: A Walk-Thru Adventure is currently showing in Atlanta, Boston, San Antonio, and Las Vegas.

Dino Safari: A Walk-Thru Adventure Review

Your Dino Safari walk-thru experience begins with a passport to Pangea. You’ll receive this small passport booklet and a crayon. Inside the passport is a scavenger hunt of different dinosaurs, unique features, and plant life for you to find and check off as you walk through the exhibit.

You can also scan a QR code at the beginning of the experience to get access to the audio guide and music that will add to your safari experience. It’s not necessary to use the audio guide, but it’s great if you’ve got someone who wants to learn all the things about dinosaurs.

The journey through Pangea (the giant contiguous landmass that all the continents used to be a part of) is broken out into the continents we’re familiar with today. You’ll learn about what each continent would have been like as part of Pangea and see the dinosaurs that were native to that area.

You’ll get to meet some of your favorite dinosaurs and maybe even discover a few you hadn’t even heard of.

Don’t miss your opportunity to take a picture with the T. Rex!

At the end of the experience is a “fun zone” where you can do an interactive digital coloring game that brings your drawing to life, “feed” dinosaurs in a corn-hole-type game, play on an balancing course, race against a dinosaur, and put together a dinosaur puzzle.

The experience exits into the gift shop where you can buy dinosaur toys, candy, clothes, and stuffed animals.

This is also where you’ll find the Virtual Reality simulators where you can go on additional adventures like flying through the mountains, a thrill ride in the city, and bungee jumping over a canyon.

What Was Great About the Experience

  • The displays were great. I loved the animatronic dinosaurs and the traveling theme with the passport, vintage postcard displays, and grouping the dinosaurs by region.
  • The interactive elements were a nice touch. There was a dinosaur slide, a small tunnel to crawl through between two exhibits, a sandbox archaeological dig, and some small jungle balancing courses. Just a lot of little fun things for the kids.
  • The workers were all very nice and helped add to the safari experience. One even took a bunch of amazing pictures for us with the T. Rex!

What Was Not So Great

  • We were confused about the scale of the dinosaurs. I came into this thinking they were all mostly life-sized, then we started noticing that some of the small dinosaurs were displayed really big, including the smallest dinosaur that was scaled up to like 8 feet tall. And of course some of the large dinosaurs had to be scaled down. Mostly I didn’t like that the small ones were suddenly larger-than-life; I’m used to dinosaurs being big, so I would have loved the comparison against the life-sized small dinosaurs.
  • Not a huge thing, but the Virtual Reality simulator wasn’t dinosaur-themed, just thrill- and adrenaline-themed. Maybe there was a dino-themed option, but we got put on bungee, trill ride, and flying simulators. So I just didn’t really see the point of a non-dinosaur VR add-on.
