trip to peru ayahuasca

I attended a five-day retreat at Etnikas in the summer and it was worth both the journey and the wait (wait due to covid restrictions). They have a great new premises which is secluded and peaceful. The management of the entire operation seamlessly transcends the different levels of formality and care as and when required; whilst being a generally self sufficient person, there were of course moments of fragility throughout the experience and the team were on hand every step of the way to make sure support was given.

Infinite Love ❤️

Etnikas Ayahuasca Retreats exceeded my expectations in every way. The place location is breathtaking, the level of care is superb, and the Spiritual holiness is in the air.

Thank you Etnikas, I am forever grateful ️ Till we meet again

Like most things in life, there are a broad variety of Ayahuasca retreat options, and a number of factors that effect the safety, quality, and the cost of an ayahuasca retreat that you may want to take into consideration:

[component-ten]

Safety : Many smaller operators are not in a position to invest in safety, but this is something you will want to prioritize. Choose a retreat that does in-depth screening to ensure your physical, psychological, and spiritual well-being.‍

Legality :  The best practitioners who have dedicated their lives to medicine work typically live in locations where it is legal. Seek out legitimate “above ground” operations to minimize stress and worry.).

‍ Size of the group : The size of the group can significantly impact your ayahuasca journey. Larger retreats with 20, 50, or even 100 participants can feel chaotic and limit the personal attention you may receive from facilitators. To ensure a more intimate and focused experience, consider opting for a retreat with a smaller group of around 8 to 15 people.

Length of the retreat : Rushing through the ayahuasca experience can hinder its profound effects. Instead of choosing shorter retreats with only a few nights, it's recommended to go for a more extended period, preferably at least a week. This will allow you the time needed for deeper exploration and healing.

Comfort : Opt for a retreat that prioritizes your physical comfort. Investing a little extra to have your own bedroom where you can decompress and integrate your experiences, especially if it's your first time, can make a significant difference. Your future self will thank you.

Cosmology : The energy, atmosphere, and worldview of the retreat center and ceremony leaders play a crucial role in your journey. Select a retreat that aligns with your own disposition. This alignment can enhance the profound effects of the ayahuasca experience.

Holistic approach : Choose an organization that embraces a holistic approach to working with ayahuasca medicine. Look for options that offer support and guidance for your mental and emotional evolution. Be cautious of providers who claim that the medicine alone will solve all your problems, as a comprehensive and holistic approach to healing is crucial.

Service : Prioritize a retreat center that caters to your individual needs. Consider whether they take the time to understand you and your intentions for the experience, rather than offering a one-size-fits-all approach. A personalized approach can make a substantial difference in the outcome of your journey.

Booking process : Before finalizing your booking, make sure to speak with the retreat provider directly. Some centers do not connect with participants individually, which is not ideal. Direct communication helps ensure the best match for your needs.

Expertise : Seek out organizations that prioritize healing and possess a wide breadth of expertise to guide your transformation. Look for facilitators and healers who are positive, grounded, and have a genuine passion for their work.

Reputation : Take the time to research the reputation of the retreat provider. A quick Google search can reveal valuable insights and experiences shared by previous participants. This information can help you make an informed decision.

Ethical Treatment of Staff : Consider the treatment of staff by the retreat organization when choosing a center. Opt for organizations that value their staff and pay them fairly. A center that supports its team's well-being is more likely to provide a nurturing and supportive environment for your own transformational journey.

By keeping these factors in mind, you can ensure a transformative and enriching ayahuasca retreat experience that aligns with your needs and aspirations. Remember, this powerful medicine requires careful consideration of the setting and support to unlock its full potential. If you're in a position to do so, you may also like to consider a private retreat.

If our recommendations above feel aligned for you, and you'd like to explore a journey with Behold Retreats, apply below.

Psychedelics & ayahuasca : the world is changing. are you.

After nearly 6 decades of prohibition, psychedelics are coming back in a big way, with institutions such as the Imperial College in London , Johns Hopkins University , and Harvard studying, the antidepressant effects of psychedelics such as psilocybin (magic mushrooms) and the trauma healing power of Ayahuasca. These studies have shown the potential of psychedelics to help with a variety of mental health concerns, such as post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, addiction, depression, and recurrent negative behaviors.

What is Ayahuasca?

Ayahuasca is a South American ancestral medicine from the Amazon, revered as one of the most precious gifts from Mother Earth. The healing that can be found during a plant medicine ceremony on one of the many Peru ayahuasca retreats available can be positively life-changing, and as the psychedelic movement grows in popularity, the range of options available when it comes to choosing a retreat can make the process a bit overwhelming. This abundance of options can lead to "analysis paralysis", causing us to either give up, or choose a retreat impulsively. Choosing a place to have your experience may be one the most important decisions you'll ever make, and it's important to choose your retreat with diligence and care.

Thinking of choosing one of these Peru Ayahuasca Retreats?

Before committing to a retreat, we highly recommend you do your research and come well prepared.

Ayahuasca is not a party drug. It is an incredibly strong psychedelic substance with hallucinogenic properties that will send you on an all-night journey into the depths of your consciousness.

Disclaimer! It is important that those on prescription medications are monitored by doctors or similar professionals before any ayahuasca ingestion, for safety purposes. There are many drugs and medications that are contraindicated with ayahuasca and can be very dangerous. Always seek medical advice before undertaking any healing modality.

Ayahuasca, which contains the powerful psychedelic DMT (the “spirit molecule”), was first formulated by Indigenous South Americans of the Amazon basin, and is now used in many parts of the world along with other psychedelics such as San Pedro and Peyote. This psychedelic brew is made by brewing leaves from the Chacruna plant (psychotria viridis) and banisteriopsis caapi vine, and is used in Indigenous communities for ceremonies led by a shamanic guide.

Ayahuasca is legally used in Peru, Costa Rica, Ecuador, and Brazil, where ayahuasca shamanism finds its roots. In the USA, and most of the world, Ayahuasca is not legal, although there have been religious exceptions to use ayahuasca as a sacred sacrament in Brazilian ayahuasca churches such as Santo Daime. We strongly recommend you proceed only where legal and safe .

Peru Ayahuasca Retreats

Andean shamans typically guide the ayahuasca sessions in spiritual retreats in sacred places in Peru.

Cusco (Cuzco) is a town in the Sacred Valley of the Andes Mountains, South America, and is a popular destination for ayahuasca tourists seeking a more spiritual travel experience in Peru, well known for ayahuasca ceremonies and retreats.

But buyer beware!

As ayahuasca has gained much popularity in the West, ayahuasca tourism is booming and there are many people taking advantage of this business opportunity without your safety and well-being in mind, claiming to be an 'ayahuasca shaman' with no proper experience.

Update: As Peru continues to crack down on illegal retreat centers, many are considering Costa Rica and Mexico instead.

Machu Picchu Ayahuasca

If you are looking to combine ayahuasca ceremony with a tour of Machu Pichu, there are some retreat centers who might offer a guided tour or trek through part of the Inca trail such as Arkana Spiritual Center.

Immerse yourself in a mystical tour through sacred sites of the Inca, including the mountain Huayna Picchu, and explore the towns of Ollantaytambo, Aguas Caliente, Pisac, Iquitos, Urubamba, and Puerto Maldonado. Get to know the indigenous people and culture of the region while you're on this incredible pilgrimage.

Good to know: Many people experience altitude sickness while climbing the Inca Trail or visiting Machu Picchu because of the high altitude. You may even feel the effects when arriving at Cusco. It is recommended to spend a few days resting in Cusco to get acclimatized before trekking or going on an intensive ayahuasca retreat. Coca leaves are also known to help with relieving symptoms of altitude sickness.

Ayahuasca Lima

You can also find Ayahuasca retreats in the country's capital, Lima. Although we don't recommend combining an evening out in the Barranco district enjoying spicy food and a pisco sour with ayahuasca consumption - in fact that would be possibly quite dangerous.

If you are hoping to stay near Lima, or a commercial city, you may be able to find indigenous groups in the nearby jungle city Tarapoto for your ayahuasca ceremony. The cloud forest provides a bit more space for quiet contemplation and meditation outside the big city.

Still need some help choosing a retreat?

We would be honored to guide you in choosing the best ayahuasca retreat for your needs. Whether you decide to undergo your shamanic retreat with us, or with another leading retreat center such as soltara healing center or gaia sagrada, we are here for a free consultation to help you on your way. Behold Retreats coordinates expertly guided retreats with ayahuasca, psilocybin, and 5-MeO-DMT (Bufo Alvarius) with highly experienced facilitators. Reach out to us to set up a complimentary discovery call and we can point you in the right direction.

How to choose an ayahuasca retreat center.

written by Carlos Tanner

Spiritual Growth

Our aim is to provide you with the optimum environment for you to replant your spirit. All treatments and activities are optional, so go at your own pace. Two or three weeks is a relatively short period of time in a human being’s life, and we really see this process not as a complete and final solution to your problems, but rather as a new beginning, a foundation on which to build over time, providing inspiration for your spiritual growth. We are also here to let you know that anything is possible . What we have found is this: the people who take responsibility for their own healing, put their trust and faith in the plants and in us, let go of expectations and truly commit themselves with intention to their process. These people always get what they need , unfolding into the most profound depths of inner transformation possible for them, and are then gratefully ready to continue the work of integrating their experiences for the rest of their lives.

Focus on Care

Regardless of which retreat you choose, the Ayahuasca Foundation ensures that the highest level of care possible will be provided to you. Our staff is comprised of dedicated students who are always striving to learn more, do more, and be more. Even our curanderos who have decades of experience are always trying to improve and learn, but especially our assistant healers who manage the day to day activities during the programs. There is no end to what can be learned and improved upon, as there is no end to the depth of the ayahuasca healing tradition. It is truly limitless .

What can be treated on an Ayahuasca Retreat?

While a great deal of attention is given to the healing effects of ayahuasca in treating anxiety and depression, when combined with the use of a wide variety of other plants and natural plant remedies, there really is nothing that cannot be treated on an Ayahuasca Retreat.  Below is a listing of conditions and the effectiveness of treatment.

MENTAL & EMOTIONAL CONDITIONS

Depression is definitely the most common condition we treat and also the condition we have the most success in treating. With both the two and three week ayahuasca retreats we have a 100% success rate of improving depression, but improvement is only lasting if lifestyle changes are made after the retreat. We offer methods and practices for integration during our programs, as well as counseling afterwards, but it is ultimately up to each person to follow through.

Anxiety is a condition we treat very often and always with positive results. The tradition’s combination of treatment methods is ideal for treating both depression and anxiety, as well as a number of other conditions. Our ayahuasca retreats have a 100% success rate for improvement with treatment of anxiety, but again, it is up to each person to follow through on making and maintaining lifestyle changes after the retreat.

PTSD and the negative effects of emotional trauma are helped tremendously by treatment with the indigenous healing tradition during our ayahuasca retreats in the Amazon. Using a series of remedies that help to release pent up emotions, unlock buried memories, and reroute unhealthy neural pathways, the tradition provides a path towards acceptance, self-love, and optimism for a bright future.

Our ayahuasca retreats have a very high success rate treating Insomnia, as its causes are typically related to depression, anxiety, and emotional trauma. Simply from a chemical perspective, the effect ayahuasca has on the production of serotonin in the brain is very helpful, but finding balance at the root of the condition is key, and that is often achieved through the combination of several treatment methods.

In the treatment of OCD and other similar disorders, it is not so much about alleviating the condition, but rather discovering a more preferable manner of thinking and acting, and even more so, remembering self-love in an unconditional form. Accepting ourselves is an important step in any healing process, but most especially with conditions like these, and the Ayahuasca Foundation’s ayahuasca retreats in Peru can provide tremendous benefit.

Our ayahuasca retreats have had success in helping people struggling with addiction. It is certainly more challenging because the roots of addiction are so varied, although in general relate to emotional trauma and a lack of self love. With treatment for addiction, integration and a commitment to lasting lifestyle changes is essential. Turning the corner is achievable, but following the new path in life is more important. We do everything we can to assist with those processes.

DIGESTIVE CONDITIONS

Acid reflux.

Acid reflux has become one of the most common afflictions of the Western world. Poor eating habits combined with increased emotional stress create systemic enzyme imbalances that are difficult to treat, and, unfortunately, present an opportunity for pharmaceutical companies to take advantage of a maintainable condition. Particular plant treatments and a regimented diet can provide tremendous benefit. We have had great success during our ayahuasca retreats with the treatment of acid reflux.

Leaky gut is a different expression to similar roots as acid reflux. The treatment is also very similar. We have had very good success on our ayahuasca retreats with helping people who suffer from leaky gut, and many other digestive issues.

Candida is a troublesome condition for western treatment because it is an intelligent living being, aware and capable of learning. Therefore, treatment with unconscious chemicals is limiting and often causes adaptation of the being rather than eradication. Treatment with plants, however, which are also intelligent living beings capable of their own learning and adaptation, significantly increases the chances of success, which we have observed on numerous occasions with the treatment methods used during our ayahuasca retreats.

The treatment of ulcers goes beyond just the physical. Although the roots of the affliction are similar to acid reflux, the emotional aspects usually go deeper. A complete treatment is necessary. Our ayahuasca retreats have had very good results with the treatment of ulcers, but important lifestyle changes must follow. We assist with the maintenance of those changes.

Most people from the Western world don’t consider parasites a possibility unless they have traveled to a third world country, but parasites are everywhere. They go undetected due to a lack of proper testing within the western medical industry, and are often mistreated as a digestive issue. Our ayahuasca retreats have had tremendous success treating parasites, often times when participants did not know they had them.

All food allergies are a sign that something is not right. People don’t ‘just have’ an allergy to a normal food. Celiac disease is complicated by the current modification and distortion of gluten in the food industry, most especially in the mass production of bread (at least it’s called bread), but there is more going on within the immune system as well, which is compromised in various ways. While we have only had a handful of cases on our ayahuasca retreats, we have had great success with the treatment of all of them.

Crohn’s Disease

Like most digestive issues, Crohn’s disease is also linked to emotional trauma, stress, and improper diet. During our ayahuasca retreats we have only treated two cases of Crohn’s but both were successful treatments, with one of the participants being healed after 35 years of suffering. In both cases, after many years of chronic diarrhea and the other digestive issues associated with the disease, the participants were able to return to normal digestive processes, free from suffering.

PHYSICAL CONDITIONS

Allergies are nearly as prevalent in the people who attend our ayahuasca retreats as depression and anxiety, although most cases are not very serious. Our immune systems should naturally be able to defend against natural elements of our environment, but again, when compromised by toxicity, trauma, stress, and diet, there are obstacles in the way of health being achieved. We have had very good results treating allergies, but lifestyle changes are necessary as well.

At our ayahuasca retreats we have treated numerous cases of arthritis with good success. Only in the most extreme cases were we not able to achieve significant improvements, but even in those few cases, there was improvement. A number of treatments are involved, and there are some fantastic natural remedies employed in the process.

Chronic Fatigue

Chronic fatigue can be a complicated condition to treat, for it is most likely a combination of various factors, including toxic environmental influences, emotional stress and/or trauma, depression, energy blockages, and poor diet/lifestyle. The treatment during our ayahuasca retreats involves heaving cleansing, which can be challenging because it requires effort on the part of the patient. Participation correlates directly to effectiveness.

The cleansing process involved in treatment coupled with the dietary restrictions during ayahuasca retreats make for a successful weight loss plan. It is very common to lose weight during a program, nearly guaranteed, but especially excess weight. We recently had someone lose 37lbs in three weeks (2lbs per day). Because the digestive system is rebalanced in the healing and the emotional issues at the core of the condition are addressed, weight usually continues to drop and stay off.

Sleep Apnea

We have only had a handful of participants on our ayahuasca retreats receive treatment for sleep apnea, but 100% found it very helpful, including two participants who were healed completely. Of course, like all other treatments, continuing with lifestyle changes after the retreat is necessary to maintain the health achieved during the programs.

We have successfully treated both glaucoma and cataracts with plant medicine during our ayahuasca retreats. There are clearly emotional and mental factors contributing to the conditions that are effectively addressed with this healing tradition. However, participation and faith in the process is imperative for success.

ILLNESS & DISEASE

While we have not had great success with treating type 1 Diabetes, we have been able to help nearly every participant treated for type 2 diabetes. Obviously, type 2 is influenced much more by lifestyle habits and diet, and so following our program helps tremendously, especially with the specific remedies used to control blood sugar levels. After the ayahuasca retreat, maintaining the healthy habits practiced during the program is very important.

We’ve only treated three cases of Hepatitis, and only one case of Hep B. All participants were helped significantly, along with anyone else suffering from liver or kidney problems. Cleansing the organs, boosting the immune system, and purifying the blood are parts of the physical aspects of treatment during our ayahuasca retreats, along with addressing mental, emotional, and spiritual aspects.

Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple Sclerosis can be treated naturally using a number of healing traditions. The Amazon traditions, while beneficial, may not be the best choice, simply because the climate and environment is typically very uncomfortable for anyone suffering from MS. We have helped a few people with medicine brought back from the Amazon by another participant, but we usually recommend considering a tradition like San Pedro, which takes place in a more comfortable climate.

Cancer is a very broad category, but treatment methods all follow similar principles. Purification of the blood, boosting the immune system, and addressing the emotional roots of the condition are the methods that make up the core of treatment for most diseases. We have only treated three ayahuasca retreat participants for cancer. While one person was healed completely and remains cancer free over seven years later, the other two people were not healed, although their cases differed greatly as well as their attitudes and engagement with the process.

We have only treated three patients for AIDS/HIV but each participant benefited tremendously. All three reported that their lives had been completely transformed. One was totally healed and is still HIV negative after seven years, while the other two test negatively, but continue to take medication as a precaution. It is important to note that all three had profound faith in the process and engaged very well with the treatment and medicine.

Do the Ayahuasca Retreats feature Additional Activities?

Apart from the ayahuasca ceremonies and daily treatments, participants always have some free time each day.  They also have some options for how to spend that free time.  The Assistant Healers offer additional complementary activities to enhance the healing process and optimize the potential for healing with ayahuasca, plant medicines, and self reflection and discovery.  Below is a listing of additional activities.

Comments from Previous Retreat Participants

This place is just amazing.  Everyone here has been so great and so supportive.  It’s just a beautiful place to be, surrounded by nature, so much green, so many animals everywhere, not big animals, little ones.  And just having the river nearby, that was pretty glorious, and there’s this mud you can put all over yourself and let it draw all the toxins out and it just feels so great.  And the food was great, lots of good food.  Everything was just awesome.  It was a really good experience and I highly recommend it to anyone thinking of coming down here.  Just do it.  It’s definitely worth it.  Life changing.  Thank you Ayahuasca Foundation.

I would say if you’re looking for a life changing experience, something that’s gonna have a positive significant effect on your life, then it’s definitely worth considering.  Almost words can’t describe… it’s been a clearly unique experience, something which I’ll value all my life, highly recommended.

What I’ve more or less accomplished and what I’m really grateful for is that I had a really strong, firm belief that something was wrong with me which prevented me from fully accepting myself and I really feel that I have been able to get over it so I’ve been able to let go of this limiting belief and replace it with self love. I’m not saying that I’m there, I still have a long way to go as everybody, but that the roots of this negative belief are gone, which opened the way for me to actually love myself.

It’s been great. It’s felt like I’ve lived a lifetime in three weeks. I’ve really been able to almost reprogram myself and undo a lot of negative habits and a lot of negative ways of thinking about myself and my life and my past. It’s really brought a lot of healing and closure in many aspects of many lingering issues. It’s great. It’s fantastic. It’s been really lovely. It’s very comfortable. The location with the Mishana community is fantastic. Being able to interact with people and being on a reserve is lovely, being able to go hiking and experience the indigenous nature. It’s also great that there are no mosquitoes here.

You should come.  Absolutely, hands down, yes please.  It’s gonna put some perspective in your life, bring you back to faith, strength, courage, and happiness and healing that’s perpetuated by myself, and that is wicked.  It’ll make you whole and a big part of it is the plants as well, not just the ayahuasca.  Absolutely do it.

The altered state of consciousness

Achieving higher states of being.

As a shamanic healing center, we practice spiritual healing while in an altered state of consciousness. This state allows our Shipibo Shaman to commune with their spirit allies, and to guide the experience of the guest so that they may achieve healthier states of being.

Your safety is our top priority

Ensuring your safety is our top priority, so before joining us at Refugio Altiplano, take a moment to familiarize yourself with any potential risks associated with ayahuasca and ensure you’re not taking any medications that could be unsafe in combination. We only work with experienced facilitators to guide our traditional ceremonies, providing a safe and supportive environment for all participants during the ceremony. They also offer support and guidance after the ceremony to help you integrate your experiences.

Using ayahuasca

Sacred plant medicine

In order to access these altered states of consciousness, we use the sacred plant medicine ‘Ayahuasca’. The brew is the result of the combining the ayahuasca vine and the leaves of the chacruna plant. The ingredients are sourced from our botanical garden, and we do not use any foreign admixtures. For more information on ayahuasca please click here.

The ayahuasca is considered a medicine and a powerful teacher. It is during a formal, structured ceremony that this sacrament is consumed by the Shaman and the participants. The ceremony lasts for several hours, directed by the Shaman and supervised by our support staff.

Urban (32) was born in Sweden. After a few encounters with death at the age of 26, he was called to explore ways of medicine outside the western scope and eventually crossed paths with padre Esteban and mama Olinda.

Today he works as a coach and co-leads the retreat with the family, facilitating and connecting the western world to the ancient medicine of ayahuasca and the master plant dietas.

Ayahuasca Retreat in Pucallpa Peru

Epicenter Ayahusca was founded by Mama Olinda, Padre Esteban and Urban in 2022 and is run by their family. The retreat is just outside Pahoyan, A Shibibo village up the Amazonian river from Pucallpa, Peru. The family carries centuries of experience, with tradition and practice of using Ayahuasca and master plant dietas as healing methods going back to their great ancestors.   If you are looking for a safe and authentic way to use the medicine of Ayahuasca and master plant dietas - You have come to the right place.

Teacher tree outside Ayahuasca Retreat in Peru

Maestro Esteban and Maestra Olinda started as healers in their respective communities early in life. However, they wanted to go beyond their community and use their practice for a larger audience.

For the last 15 years, they worked jointly at different retreats in Iquitos and Pucallpa, but something was lacking. They found that the "westernized" resorts didn't follow the Shipibo way but had difficulty getting their voices heard. During a 1 month dieta in 2020, they crossed paths with Urban, a Swedish man exploring alternative healing practices to bring to the west.

Maestro Esteban and Maestra Olinda shared their vision - an affordable ayahuasca retreat, in its epicenter, just outside their home village, to be run by their family, following the ancient traditions and healing arts of the Shipibos. Together they spent months in the jungle, doing dietas, ceremonies, and building. In 2022, the retreat opened.

What It's Really Like to Join an Ayahuasca Retreat Alongside Spiritual Experts

By Michaela Trimble

Ayahuasca Retreat What It's Really Like—And How to Choose One

For a few twilight hours in a remote jungle of the Spanish Caribbean , I ceased to exist. On my first-ever ayahuasca retreat, a medicine journey that was facilitated by a local healing couple I met while traveling, I curled up inside a sleeping bag beneath a canvas tent structure, with a warm heap of wool blankets on top of me, and was lulled into one of the most transformative awakenings of my life. Over the course of one night, I was transported far and wide, and into a realm I never knew existed.

I didn’t go to the Caribbean seeking ayahuasca; it found me. After befriending a medicine woman who introduced me to the two experts, I ended up extending my trip by a week in order to experience the substance for the first time. Though the word ‘ayahuasca’ wasn’t part of my vocabulary before this 2016 experience, I’ve since participated in other ceremonies. I’ll always regard this initial experience as a new starting point of my life. It was the moment that set me along my spiritual path, into a life full of big adventures and endless wells of creativity—and I have the learnings of Indigenous experts with cultural and spiritual connections to ayahuasca to thank for that. The Western world’s recent scientific research on ayahuasca's benefits prove what Indigenous cultures in the Amazon Basin have always known: The plant is a highly powerful, transportive substance that can be used to treat physical and mental ailments, and experiencing it with the help of those practiced in its traditions can expand the mind in ways you might have never thought possible.

I didn’t go to the Caribbean seeking ayahuasca; it found me.

My first ayahuasca experience went something like this: After a shaman cleared my nostrils with rapé—a dried, powdered tobacco snuff that’s shot up participants’ noses with a pipe to begin a ceremony—I drank my first of three cups (the plant is brewed into a tea and ingested). Little did I know, as the bitter, mud-like brew slid its way into my system, that I was about to go on the ride of a lifetime. Over the course of about six hours, I took on a series of forms: a nameless bird; a snake in a pit of other snakes. I even lost all concept of my own appearance—what qualities my face had, from my nose to even the color of my eyes.

I mentally traveled back in time to meet the first ancestor of my entire lineage, who danced in the woods morphing between two forms—that of a wolf and a man—before being suddenly transported to a cave full of drawings I couldn’t decipher but somehow understood. Next, I was whisked away in flight, sweeping across the snowy peaks of the Andes as the mountain range broke apart below me, almost like a game of Tetris. I saw Machu Picchu spinning on an axis of geometric cubes, twisting and turning as what appeared to be Lego-like warriors jumped in and out of the structure. Then, in a moment of engulfing hilarity, I lay in a fetal position completely consumed by laughter.

The ayahuasca plant recently became part of a greater movement to decriminalize psychedelics in the United States, which has seen a rise in acceptance of the substance and others like it. Popular shows like Netflix’s  How to Change Your Mind (or any of  Michael Pollan ’s psychedelic-therapy books, upon which that TV series is based) question why many psychedelics were considered Schedule I drugs in the first place (as ayahuasca still is) and examine how they can be used to treat mental illnesses and expand the mind. The substance is also seen by many as a spirituality tool, and according to the  Pew Research Center’s Forum on Religion & Public Life , nearly 27 percent of Americans considered themselves spiritual—not religious—as of 2017. Though there are still many unknowns regarding the full effect of ayahuasca on the human experience, if my own is any indication, the mental and emotional gates this plant can open seem promising. But how does it actually work?

The Indigenous origins of ayahuasca, and how a ceremony works

It’s important to respect the use of the plant, and Indigenous people who have used it for centuries, as the cultural harbingers of its healing qualities. Ayahuasca is considered medicine, and should not be used recreationally or without the supervision of practiced healers who have studied the medicine in countries where it is legal and there is a cultural connection to the substance—such as Peru, where the plant originates. The same is true of Mexico and Colombia.

According to the  Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS), ayahuasca's psychoactive properties are most commonly derived from  Banisteriopsis caapi , a vine containing monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), and the leaves of  Psychotria viridis, or other plant containing  N,N -dimethyltryptamine (DMT). It’s believed that the DMT found in ayahuasca activates the DMT naturally found in a person’s pineal gland, often considered the third eye portal amongst the spiritual set and Indigenous healers. Many healers and shamanic practitioners believe this leads to the vision quests that ensue after ingesting the brewed version of ayahuasca, and why participating in ceremony is a way to connect deeper to your truest self.

Ayahuasca journeys can range from one-night events to multi-day  dietas , which usually require a participant to refrain from any intense physical stimulants such as sex, alcohol, and rich foods for a period of time. Most ceremonies are held in a  maloca , a wooden ceremonial structure with a thatched roof, and begin at sunset and end the following morning before dawn, lasting around five to six hours. In my experience, a ceremony usually includes fewer than 20 participants and begins with some type of cleansing initiation through the use of tobacco snuff, such as  rapé , or  mapacho . After ingesting the medicinal tea, most participants will experience a purging reaction, which could include vomiting or even a bowel movement. Participants can drink three cups—each about the size of an espresso shot—throughout the night. Shamans and healing elders usually sing  icaros , or prayers through song, to facilitate a sense of calm and tranquility. While some ceremonies observe a practice known as noble silence, many rituals encourage participants to emote as necessary: crying, screaming, and purging included.

While no two ceremonies are the same, an ayahuasca retreat will typically follow a spiritually-similar thread that’s meant to evoke the utmost calm and protection of participants. If you do feel called to take part in a ceremony, it’s important to do your own research to find the right experience for you: I’ve traveled hours into the rainforest for ceremonies and walked away without participating because it didn’t feel right. Your intuition is often your best guide when deciding whether you feel safe with a certain facilitator or not. Here, a trusted selection of healers and retreat centers to consider for your ayahuasca journey.

Editor’s note: All experts below have agreed to be included in this article. All three nations included below legally permit the use of ayahuasca.

Iquitos, Peruvian Amazon

Located about two hours into the rainforest (by car and then boat) from downtown Iquitos, in Peru’s Amazon Basin, the  Temple of the Way of Light is a healing center offering 12-day ayahuasca retreats, with six ayahuasca ceremonies over the course of the experience. In the plant’s region of origin, local Indigenous healers lead the ceremonies at this center’s rainforest setting, many of whom travel by boat from their home communities located further up the Ucayali River—a tributary of the Amazon.

Operating according to Shipibo Indigenous tradition, each ceremony is held by a team of four Onanya (the Shipibo language word meaning a person who has wisdom). Each of them has studied the healing modality for a minimum of ten years to equip them to safely and responsibly deliver ayahuasca healing. During ceremony, the oni (a word that means wisdom in Shipibo, but is used as a synonym for ayahuasca), is served while Shipibo healers sing songs; together, the experience is meant to purge negative, heavy energies from the body, also known as mawa niwe .

Bacalar, Mexico

Hosting multi-day ayahuasca retreats in the lagoon-side town of Bacalar, in Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula, is Peruvian-American healer and curator Amalia Moscoso , who brings together medicine men and women, facilitators, and shamans of all backgrounds to create each of her experiences. The retreats also infuse additional healing elements that complement each guest’s medicine journey, from a temazcal sweat-lodge ceremony to  janzu therapies, a water-based healing meditation. Her offerings also include cognitive workshops to assist in mental, emotional, and physical integration and rewiring to create neural pathways in the brain.

Valle del Cauca, Colombia

In the verdant hills outside of Cali, in Colombia’s southwestern bounds, the Colombian healer Taita Edwin leads healing ayahuasca ceremonies at his family’s private farm. During Edwin’s spiritual ceremonies, the medicine, or ayahuasca, is treated as a sacrament, a link to the spiritual realm, with a focus on creating a safe space and allowing people to surrender to their processes with deep compassion, love, and care. Besides an opening and closing prayer, there is no strict structure to the ceremonies. However, each does include two or more sharing circles so that everyone can express themselves, find clarity, and find common ground in the shared experience. More information can be found by  reaching out directly via email .

Pucallpa, Peru

Along the Ucayali River in the town of Pucallpa in the eastern bounds of Peru’s Amazon Rainforest, Indigenous Mexican healer and facilitator  Daniela Riojas leads ayahuasca ceremonies in partnership with the Onanya of the region. After first participating in an ayahuasca ceremony in 2015, Riojas, an artist and musician by trade, began her extensive studies of the plant and its medicine during apprenticeships with master healers that included participating in multi-day  dietas . The ceremonies she facilitates include holding space through icaros , prayers that embody the healing power of the region’s plants and animals. Each experience is held during the night in a ceremonial  maloca to help facilitate each participant’s journey inward.

An ancestral tradition steeped in the rituals of Amazonian shamans, Ayahuasca emerges from within the Amazon rainforest as a masterful botanical presence. It is now experiencing a revival in the Western world due to its profound potential as a remedy for both the corporeal and the ethereal.

As a result of this age-old sagacity, profound metamorphoses are taking place, drawing spiritual sojourners from all over the world to this holy place. The allure of Ayahuasca has inspired pilgrimages to the lush expanses of Peru, where the rainforest cradles seekers who yearn for the transformative healing and spiritual revelation bestowed by the sacred ceremonial concoction.

Join Auri Peru for a closer look at an ancient plant that has been revered by cultures of all ages and has fascinated spiritual explorers throughout history.

Ayahuasca plant

Ayahuasca plant

What is Ayahuasca Peru and Why Is It Increasingly Popular?

Ayahuasca is a psychoactive brew made from the Ayahuasca vine (Banisteriopsis caapi) and the Chacruna leaf (Psychotria viridis). The vine contains harmala alkaloids that enable the psychoactive compound DMT in the Chacruna leaf to take effect when ingested orally.

Ayahuasca components - What is Ayahuasca Peru

Ayahuasca preparation in a simple pot

Indigenous tribes across the Upper Amazon have used Ayahuasca for centuries as a shamanic medicine for healing, divination, and worship. The name Ayahuasca means “vine of the soul” in the Quechua language. In addition, encompasses the Banisteriopsis Caapi plant, a vine indigenous to the Amazon rainforest.

The Components and Brewing Process

The Banisteriopsis Caapi vine contains harmala alkaloids and monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) like harmine, harmaline, and tetrahydroharmine. These interact with DMT (N,N-dimethyltryptamine), a potent hallucinogenic alkaloid found in companion plants such as Psychotria viridis (“Chakruna”) and Diplopterys cabrerana (“Chagropanga”).

Crafting the Ayahuasca brew involves cutting and soaking vine portions with Chakruna overnight, followed by a prolonged boiling process to create a thick, syrupy liquid. Each shaman adds unique elements to the mix, contributing to variations in the brew’s composition.

A scientific perspective of Ayahuasca

Ayahuasca encompasses a potent mixture of compounds, including DMT (dimethyltryptamine) and MAO (monoamine oxidase), known for their profound impact on brain function. Particularly, DMT emerges as the influential agent responsible for the vivid visual experiences and altered states of consciousness that manifest during Ayahuasca ceremonies.

From a scientific standpoint, Ayahuasca’s therapeutic potential in addressing conditions like depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder has garnered attention. Furthermore, its link to neuroplasticity—the brain’s remarkable adaptability—has kindled interest in unveiling the clinical dimensions of Ayahuasca.

Imagine Ayahuasca as a bridge, unifying scientific and mystical perspectives. While science delves into unraveling the intricate neurochemical interactions prompted by Ayahuasca, the mystical lens underscores its ability to unveil dimensions of spirituality that transcend empirical understanding.

Just like a skilled artist carefully combines colors on a canvas to create a masterpiece, the merging of these viewpoints offers a deeper understanding of Ayahuasca’s effects on the human mind and spirit. As researchers continue to explore, the aim is to illuminate both aspects of this revered plant: its potential for healing and its significant impact on our spiritual experiences.

Recent scientific research has yielded significant conclusions:

  • In 1995, psychiatrist Dr. Ch. Grob from the University of Los Angeles and pharmacologist Dr. J. Callaway from the University of Kuopio conducted research in Brazil.
  • In 1992 and 1997, Dr. Josep Ma. Fericgla and his team investigated the Ecuadorean jungle.
  • The Takiwasi center, led by Dr. Jacques Mabit, has operated in the northern Peruvian jungle for a decade, offering Ayahuasca-based treatment for drug addiction.
  • Research by Dr. D. McKenna and Dr. Metzner in the Amazon rainforest and pharmacodynamic research on Ayahuasca at the Neuropsychology Foundation of Sant Pau Hospital in

Effects of Ayahuasca plant

Effects of Ayahuasca plant

These investigations affirm the following physiological effects of Ayahuasca on the human body:

  • Ayahuasca exhibits no hepatotoxicity, making it safe for the liver.
  • Controlled Ayahuasca consumption lacks side effects, is non-addictive, and doesn’t induce withdrawal symptoms.
  • Ritualistic use of psychoactive substances does not lead to dependency or addiction.
  • Despite its psychoactive component, Ayahuasca should not be condemned as a typical drug with negative, addictive effects. Its use occurs within a controlled, sacred, spiritual, and therapeutic context, facilitating profound introspection.
  • The majority of Ayahuasca consumers, including indigenous people, shamans, curanderos, psychologists, therapists, drug addicts seeking treatment, spiritual seekers, and the curious, view the plant not as a drug but as a tool for introspection, meditation, therapy, inner cleansing, self-exploration, or sacrament.

Furthermore, the brew’s unpleasant taste discourages consumption outside the appropriate context. No accidents, deaths, or madness due to overdose have been recorded. However, prudence is advised, and consumption should be guided by an expert in the field (ayahuasquero or shaman), as the challenge lies in managing altered states of consciousness that the brew induces.

Cultural Significance and Shamanic Beliefs

In Amazonian cultures, Ayahuasca transcends mere hallucinogenic experiences. Shamans view the Banisteriopsis Caapi vine as the ultimate healer, emphasizing purification, healing, and connection with inner wisdom over solely visionary encounters.

Exploring the Depth of Ayahuasca Visions

Ayahuasca, a potent plant-derived mixture, can give rise to a diverse range of intense visions. These visions are deeply personal and distinct for each person. They can originate from one’s background, individual experiences, or even emerge as entirely new and unexpected imagery. Occasionally, individuals may encounter images of animals like snakes and jaguars, creatures commonly associated with the Amazon region, Ayahuasca’s place of origin.

During an Ayahuasca journey, the mind can intricately conjure up familiar symbols and figures that hold significance within one’s beliefs or cultural context. These symbols might include religious representations from Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism, or broader concepts like the Universe or the human body as depicted through chakras or other belief systems.

The impact of these visions can be profound. They possess the potential to significantly deepen personal self-awareness and understanding of the world. They can prompt a reevaluation of priorities and values, often leading to a heightened sense of compassion and social awareness.

Encountering Alternate Realities and Energies

Ayahuasca has the capacity to transport individuals beyond the confines of the familiar. Some individuals recount experiences of encountering entities from ancient civilizations, extraterrestrial domains, or even making connections with angelic and divine energies. The sensation of interacting with God or other transcendental beings is not uncommon. Ayahuasca is regarded as a gateway to the divine, facilitating a potential connection with higher realms.

Embarking on the Mystical and Transformative Journey

The visions and insights stemming from Ayahuasca journeys possess the potential to bring about life-altering changes. These experiences can challenge established perceptions of reality, prompting introspection into one’s beliefs and priorities. Integrating these profound revelations into daily life may not always be straightforward, yet the outcomes often include a rejuvenated interest in spirituality and a heightened desire to live a life infused with purpose and compassion.

However, it’s important not to underestimate the significance of these experiences. They necessitate careful contemplation and integration. While Ayahuasca can offer deep insights, the process of comprehending and applying these revelations to one’s life requires time and dedication.

Throughout this journey, one might encounter potent archetypes like the snake, jaguar, puma, condor, and eagle. These symbols carry immense significance within Peruvian cosmology. The snake embodies wisdom and healing, while the jaguar and puma represent power and courage. The condor and eagle stand as symbols of spiritual insight and transcendence.

In essence, Ayahuasca offers an immersive experience capable of reshaping one’s worldview, questioning deeply-held beliefs, and ultimately fostering personal transformation. Whether these visions manifest in literal or symbolic forms, they possess the potential to serve as guiding lights towards a more enriched and consciously lived existence.

Traditional Ceremonies of Amazonian Cultures, Ayahuasca Peru

Diego Palma, in his book “Ayahuasca: The Medicine of the Soul,” describes how this brew is used in ritual contexts. Participants prepare themselves through isolation diets in the jungle, then ingest ayahuasca under the guidance of an experienced shaman.

During the ritual, individuals can spend up to eight hours in visionary states, traversing intense emotions, and ultimately emerging with renewed clarity and compassion. The shaman chants sacred songs called “icaros” to protect the space and influence altered states.

After the experience, participants feel a greater connection to others, nature, and the divine. Revelations and healings, both physical and emotional, arise. The visionary ayahuasca in Peru journey has been compared to years of psychotherapy in a matter of hours.

Scientific Studies Confirm Safety and Benefits

Although the academic world was skeptical for a long time, there are now abundant scientific studies on ayahuasca. Chemical analyses have identified its components. Neuroscience attempts to explain its effects on the brain. Above all, the absence of toxicity, addiction, or physical or psychological harm due to ceremonial use has been confirmed.

Medical research highlights the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties of ayahuasca. It also stimulates neuron growth and neurogenesis, indicating significant potential for treating depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, and addictions.

A Spiritual Alternative to Modern Existential Void

Diego Palma proposes that the quest for altered states is intrinsic to human nature. However, while traditional societies approach it with sacredness, the modern world seeks to fill that spiritual void with drugs, consumerism, and mass stimulation.

In contrast, the renewed interest in ayahuasca represents a longing for true connection. Tired of materialism, more people are exploring this ancestral medicine in an attempt to find meaning in life, heal soul ailments, and reclaim innate spiritual wisdom that has been lost.

A Tool for Physical, Emotional, and Spiritual Healing

Beyond being a sacred ritual, ayahuasca demonstrates immense therapeutic potential. Diego Palma presents cases where it has facilitated the healing of illnesses, treated addictions, phobias, trauma, stress, depression, and other modern afflictions. This is due to its ability to connect us with our essential being and activate innate healing wisdom.

Ayahuasca doesn’t impose external concepts; it simply creates conditions for individuals to find their own path to healing. While Western medicine focuses on physical symptoms, this ancestral medicine heals the human being holistically—body, mind, and spirit.

Connecting to Profound Wisdom Through Ayahuasca

Diego Palma concludes that the visionary states induced by ayahuasca allow us to transcend the limitations of reason and connect with a cosmic intelligence within us. By expanding our consciousness, it helps us remember our primordial unity with all existence.

The author invites us to revalue ancestral medicines, which hold deep insights into human nature, the natural world, and universal forces. Harnessing this ancestral knowledge could be the key to healing many modern ailments and regenerating our relationship with ourselves, others, and the planet.

For those seeking healing or a deeper connection with existence, ayahuasca offers a unique opportunity. Under safe conditions and with the right mindset, it can be a transformative journey that marks a before and after in life. Peru has become a favored destination for uncovering the mysteries and magic of this ancient medicine.

Preparing Mind, Body and Soul for the Ayahuasca Experience

  • In the traditional approach to Ayahuasca, individuals embark on a journey that extends far beyond the mere consumption of a brew. A careful orchestration of physical, mental, and spiritual preparations forms the foundation for a profound encounter with the medicine.
  • Days leading up to the ceremony are characterized by strict adherence to diets, sexual abstinence, and limited social engagement. This disciplined approach serves a twofold purpose: it physically purifies the body, enhancing receptivity to the medicine’s effects, and mentally prepares the individual for the journey ahead. By abstaining from certain foods and experiences, participants create a blank canvas, ready to be painted with the transformative effects of Ayahuasca.
  • As the ceremony approaches, participants find themselves enveloped in darkness, both literally and metaphorically. Ayahuasca ceremonies are typically held at night, shrouded in complete darkness. This choice of setting encourages an introspective atmosphere, allowing participants to focus their attention inward, free from external distractions.
  • Within this enveloping darkness, silence becomes a cherished companion. Participants are expected to maintain a state of quiet reflection during the ceremony. This silence is not merely a lack of audible noise; it’s a deliberate turning inward, a commitment to allow thoughts, emotions, and experiences to unfold without the need for verbal expression. This silence amplifies the introspective nature of the experience, fostering a deep connection with the self.
  • The guidance of a shaman, a knowledgeable and experienced facilitator, is central to the Ayahuasca ceremony. The shaman employs various tools, such as songs known as icaros, rattling, and even plant-based remedies like mapacho tobacco, to guide the ritual. These rituals serve to cleanse participants of negative energies and create a safe space for the journey ahead. Trust is paramount in this dynamic, as participants surrender themselves to the shaman’s expertise and the healing potential of Ayahuasca.
  • In this space of trust and surrender, participants are encouraged to set clear intentions while remaining open to the unknown. It’s a delicate balance between directing the experience with personal intentions and allowing the plant spirit to reveal its own guidance. This calls for the relinquishment of expectations and the need for control. Without this surrender, there’s a risk of falling into the trap of spiritual bypassing, where important issues remain unresolved. Thus, patience and perseverance are essential. Integrating Ayahuasca’s teachings into one’s life requires time and effort, as these lessons extend beyond the ceremony itself.

Exploring the Clash Between Old Ways and New Styles of Ayahuasca Healing

In recent times, an increasing number of individuals worldwide have been drawn to the effects of Ayahuasca. However, as this interest grows, an intriguing discussion is unfolding between those who advocate for preserving ancient practices and those who are experimenting with contemporary methods of using Ayahuasca.

Amidst this ongoing conversation, the implications of Ayahuasca’s rising popularity come to light. Some individuals are opting for swift and frequent ceremonies that bypass the customary rituals of preparation and integration. Yet, this hurried approach can potentially diminish the sacred nature of the experience.

Analogously, consider traditional practices as chapters in a narrative. In these chapters, specific retreat centers are making choices to deviate from strict dietary and cultural norms, citing their incompatibility with Western perspectives. However, experts in Ayahuasca emphasize that these practices are integral threads woven into the fabric of Ayahuasca’s profound effects. They transcend mere rules; they are integral to the transformative power of Ayahuasca.

Preparation of Ayahuasca in a boiling pot

Preparation of Ayahuasca in a boiling pot

Hastening into the Ayahuasca journey without a strong grounding can result in confusion. The overwhelming encounters and ego enhancements may obscure the genuine healing potential of Ayahuasca. Amidst this unfolding narrative, a novel approach to Ayahuasca emerges, termed “neo-shamanic.” This new methodology is intriguing, yet it is accompanied by a note of caution. Straying excessively from ancestral wisdom could potentially weaken the potency of Ayahuasca.

The Darker Side of Ayahuasca’s Global Spread:

Ayahuasca’s popularity has led to an increase in retreat centers offering ceremonies across Peru’s Amazon region. However, the range of quality is vast, and some shamans lack proper training or integrity. This raises serious risks for vulnerable Westerners coming in search of awakening.

It is essential to thoroughly vet any shaman or retreat center before signing up. Even reputable centers can experience issues if expanding too quickly, which can leave people feeling unsupported when challenging moments arise.

Unfortunately, some shamans and staff take advantage of participants seeking help through the confusion of an intense Ayahuasca experience. Sexual manipulation or psychological abuse by those in power has occurred, although it remains relatively uncommon.

Trusting one’s intuition and heeding any red flags is critical before surrendering to the Ayahuasca process. The right foundation sets the stage for transformation; the wrong one leaves wounds.

When Projections and Traumas Get Triggered:

Ayahuasca can bring up traumas and subconscious projections. In the altered state of consciousness, past abuse and dysfunctional patterns can get transferred onto others and disrupt the container.

If guides aren’t able to compassionately navigate these energies, interventions can lead to further confusion. Well-run centers forbid any sexual relations between participants and shamans during retreats.

Integrity on all sides is crucial for true healing. Superficial quick fixes will backfire. Deep therapy and soul work takes time and should not be rushed even in the excitement of spiritual awakening.

Ayahuasca Healing, effects on brain

Mental rebirth: Exploring the healing power of Ayahuasca.

Respecting Powerful Medicine:

While risks exist in the Ayahuasca boom, they arise largely from disrespecting the medicine’s power. Proper preparation, screening, and group management provide the container. Avoiding distraction from sexual dynamics keeps focus on inner work. Integrating experiences before moving too quickly reduces overwhelm.

Those new to Ayahuasca should start with smaller doses and shorter programs to acclimate to the medicine’s effects. Ayahuasca is a powerful tool, but it requires respect and caution for safe and meaningful experiences.

Tips for identifying genuine ayahuaska Peru shamans

  • Get personal referrals from trusted friends or communities who have worked with the shaman/center and had a positive experience.
  • Research the shaman or center’s background – where did they receive their training? How long have they been practicing?
  • Look for shamans connected to an established lineage of teachers . Beware of “self-taught” shamans without a clear learning pathway.
  • Avoid shamans or centers that make grandiose claims about being able to heal all diseases or solve all your problems miraculously. The process requires work on your part too.
  • Be wary of shamans or centers focused on money or using Ayahuasca primarily as a recreational drug . Healing should be the focus.
  • Look for centers that screen participants beforehand, provide preparatory guidance, and integrate experiences afterward. This shows care for your process.
  • Avoid places advertising extremely frequent or back-to-back ceremonies without integration time. This diverges from traditional practice.
  • Ensure the shaman speaks your language or has translators so you can communicate about your needs.
  • See if the shaman follows ancestral dieting guidelines versus taking a la carte approaches.
  • Be skeptical of shamans making radical modifications to traditional brew recipes or ceremonial practices unless they have extensive experience.
  • Trust your intuition during consultations – do you feel the shaman or staff truly cares about your healing?
  • With discernment and common sense, the life-changing gifts of Ayahuasca can be experienced safely and meaningfully.
Ayahuasca Peru tourism will likely continue growing as this ancient medicine calls to the modern soul. Heeding the guidance in Regueiro’s book helps maximize its healing and minimize dangers. Respecting Ayahuasca’s traditional origins and taking time to properly prepare can make the difference between profound awakening and a missed opportunity. Rather than seeking exotic visions, the deepest transformation comes when we humbly surrender to Ayahuasca’s wisdom. By showing us where we resist healing, it guides us toward wholeness – the ultimate goal of this sacred medicine.

Shipibo Curandero

Aka senen yoi - 'speaking the truth'.

trip to peru ayahuasca

Don Miguel was born into a Shipibo community called Roaboya on the River Ucayali. When Don Miguel was a child, Angel Sanchez Vargas, his grandfather was the community’s curandero. Vargas was an expert in sacred plant medicines and was frequently called upon to heal and share his spiritual wisdom with members of Roaboya. The school built some years later was named after Vargas and Roaboya went on to be recognised as the first indigenous community 114 years ago. Don Miguel grew up surrounded by the Shipibo wisdom and possess intimate knowledge of the sacred plant medicines. At a very young age he began his apprenticeship as a curandero through plant dietas under the supportive guidance of his grandfather. Miguel is also a trained literature professor and thoroughly enjoys teaching the Shipibo language and culture. Since 2012, Don Miguel has spent the bulk of his time leading lectures, workshops, initiation courses and retreats. Don Miguel will lead our Ayahuasca ceremonies, circle discussions and be available for personal consultations whilst on retreat.

Adelina Profile

Born in the United States, Adelina began her healing path at the young age of 5 with deep initiations through the womb. Modern-day medicine saved her life and would later unfold her dharma. Rooted in her Native American and Italian heritage, she began communing with the dreamworld and spirits in her early teens. She has always felt deeply guided by her ancestors. In 2011, Adelina graduated from university with a Bachelor’s in Human Behavior and Health Education, intending to attend medical school. She instead enrolled in Massage School and now specializes in modalities such as Polarity, Neuromuscular Therapy, and Trauma Bodywork. Shortly after, she was then guided to Peru and received her 200 RYT in the Sacred Valley in 2015. On this trip, she met the Ancient Mother, Ayahuasca, which changed the course of her life path.

She received many instructions from this plant teacher and shared deep prayers of gratitude. Following the call, Adelina traveled to the sacred lands of Mount Shasta to complete her facilitation certification in Clarity Breathwork. The sacred medicine continued to speak with her in dreams until she met with her again and full trust of this path was born. She has spent the past 3 years assisting in circles and helping in ceremonies. After holding space for so many, she began to realize the importance of grounded integration while working with such intelligent plant allies. This led to an in-depth focus on somatic studies, attachment theory, non-violent communication, and mind-body practices. Coming from a bloodline of addiction and sexual trauma, a lot came to surface while studying. She returned to the amazon to sit with Maestra Juanita and the Master Plant Noya Rao at AYA Healing Retreat Center in 2019 – where her respect for this path deepened even more.

Adelina is now focused on supporting people as they move through their traumas, addictions, ancestral conditions, and unaligned habits. She travels creating sacred spaces through sound healing, dance, breath-work, and somatic body awareness to help reprogram the subconscious. She is fully committed to helping people prepare and integrate their experiences with these ancient plants. Forever a student, she bows in deep gratitude to these sacred medicines and the lineages that hold them in protection.

trip to peru ayahuasca

Kris has been living for seven years in the Peruvian Amazon. Originally from Barcelona, she followed a calling to be of service to the indigenous elders. As soon as she arrived, Kris deeply immersed herself in the traditional knowledge of the rainforest.

She was an on-site facilitator and administrator for an Ayahuasca retreat center for five years. Her role enabled Kris to work closely with Ayahuasca and other plant medicines, facilitating Ayahuasca retreats and plant medicine dietas. She helped participants integrate and process their experiences and made sure the retreats ran smoothly.

For the past six years, Kris has forged a deep and very close relationship with the Matses tribe, who initiated and taught her how to work traditionally with Kambo. During her time in the rainforest, Kris has worked and collaborated with many powerful curanderos from different lineages and tribes, giving her a broad depth of knowledge about Amazonian plant medicines.

Those experiences ignited a passionate love for Amazonian herbalism, and she has dived deep into plant medicine alchemy for the past seven years.

Kris currently works at Aya Healing Retreats, facilitating the groups and establishing a deep connection with the local Shipibo community. She also offers Amazonian Herbalism training courses and has started her apothecary creating pure essences from these Amazonian plants and Master Plants.

Kris is a solid bridge keeper between the indigenous cultures and practices of the Amazon, and the West, bringing a unique perspective from her direct experience. Kris is a strong jungle medicine woman with a kind heart that is always ready to help those in need; she is a faithful caretaker of the forest and the indigenous traditions.

Founder - Lead Facilitator

Elio Guesa

Elio Geusa is the founder of AYA Healing Retreats and is a qualified Social Worker with over thirteen years of experience working both on national and international humanitarian projects, supporting adults experiencing mental health and intellectual disabilities, and refugee populations throughout Asia, Europe, and Australia.

Elio believes that loving and inspired action can create meaningful change in the world.

Elio has been devoted to the path of plant medicine and Ayahuasca since 2009 and began an apprenticeship under the guidance of Maestro, Vegetalista Manaco Manai. In his long time in Peru, he has continued to deepen his knowledge, experience, and understanding of the workings of the sacred plant medicines, studying the Shipibo traditions under the revered Mahua family and has undertaken numerous Master Plant Dietas with well-respected curanderos in the Peruvian Amazon.

This immersion in the sacred plant medicines of the indigenous peoples of Peru enabled Elio to experience deep and profound healing. He has overcome crippling anxiety and anger as a result of traumatic childhood experiences and healing that trauma imprints that were not possible through the Western medical paradigm. His renewed sense of self-worth, love, compassion, and empathy for himself enables him to extend those same qualities to others.

Elio founded AYA Healing Retreats because he is convinced of the healing potentialities of sacred plant medicines. Not only does he hope to share the indigenous wisdom of the ancient traditions of the Indigenous people of the Amazon, but he also hopes to make a bigger difference by investing profits from AYA Healing Retreats into humanitarian projects that create a more compassionate world.

Ayahuasca Retreats

Individual goals - individual solutions

Retreat Reviews

The work was amazing. Ayahuasca helped pull out the most stuck traumas that I didn’t even know about, remove the blocks that prevented me from walking through life with confidence and calm, being truly alive, being myself. I could not achieve such a result by working with a psychologist (I am not at all belittling their work now); in a retreat, the work occurs with great intensity and efficiency.

What is the Ayahuasca Ceremony in Peru?

What is the Ayahuasca Ceremony in Peru?

It’s no surprise that Peru is a must-see destination for many travelers. From  Machu Picchu tours   and the Rainbow Mountains to the rich history, delicious food, and unique culture, visiting Peru is an unforgettable experience.

Aside from taking hikes or tours, many tourists enjoy immersing themselves in traditions or festivals like Inti Raymi or a spiritual Ayahuasca ceremony.

Whether you’re planning a trip to Peru to partake in an Ayahuasca ceremony or are curious to know more about why people describe it as a  spiritual awakening , we discuss everything you might need to know.

What is Ayahuasca?

ayahuasca in peru

So, can you do Ayahuasca in Peru? Yes, you can. First of all, it is a good idea to eliminate any misconceptions you have about Ayahuasca. Despite the tabloid media and other news, Ayahuasca is not a recreational drug. It is not something to get high and enjoy the moment or a magic pill that will solve your problems. For the indigenous people of the Amazon, Ayahuasca is more than a simple plant, it is a spirit, a sacred and ancestral ritual for healing.

And what exactly is Ayahuasca? It is an infusion made by shamans of the Amazon jungle. It serves to enter altered states of consciousness and obtain new perspectives on life. Historically, it is known that many visited shamans to heal themselves from physical, mental, or emotional ailments. In general, those who drank from the infusion did so in order to receive guidance from the “spirit” that inhabits the plant. Today, the tradition remains strongly rooted in Ayahuasca ceremonies . And during the last decades, shamans began to serve the infusion to different patients under their supervision.

Ayahuasca is a jungle vine that grows in the middle of the jungle. It is commonly found in the territories of Colombia, Peru, Bolivia, Brazil, and the Guyanas. The plant is quite revered by the indigenous tribes as well as the shamans of the Andean regions. It is considered a “Master Plant”. The term Ayahuasca derives from the ancient Quechua language. The Quechua words “Aya” translates to the dead, while “Huasca” translates to vine or rope. That is to say, the “Rope of the Dead” or the “Vine of the Dead”. The concoction has been used for more than 5000 years for both individual and collective healing. If you are looking to visit Machu Picchu, you can enjoy one of these ceremonies.

How Ayahuasca is Prepared?

What is the Ayahuasca Ceremony in Peru?

According to tradition, these two plants must be collected on a full moon or in the morning. In addition, whoever picks it up must be fasting. It takes about ten kilos of Ayahuasca to prepare the infusion. For this, the Ayahuasca vine is crushed to make them easier to cook. Then a kilo of Chacruna is added. Depending on the shaman, the concoction can include tobacco and coca leaves .

Note that the preparation is boiled for 12 hours in about 50 liters of water. And while it is being prepared, it is accompanied by shamanic chants known in the Amazon as Icaros. It is also accompanied by tobacco puffs while asking for specific intentions. Both the songs and the intentions are invocations to the spirit of Ayahuasca. The 50 liters of the initial preparation is reduced to only 2 liters of Ayahuasca. The end result is a liquid with a viscous texture and a reddish-ocher color. This is one of the many ways to prepare, but everything will depend on the Shaman and his traditional methods.

Effects of the ayahuasca

What is the Ayahuasca

The sessions are usually accompanied by intense hallucinations and an altered perception of reality. Time and space seem to alter and you will see your emotions become much more intense in the process. The effects of the infusion can last between 4 to 8 hours, but this will depend a lot on the dosage and preparation of the medicine. Furthermore, contrary to common belief, undertaking this experience requires a great deal of preparation. It is true that not all the available ceremonies offer the necessary guidance and preparation, but if you can do it, it is recommended that you do so.

If you’ve never had experience with psychedelics, your brain may be very impressionable. It is important that you realize that you are under the influence of a psychoactive whose effects will wear off with time. Do not get carried away by fears and emotions to guarantee a good experience. Furthermore, Ayahuasca affects not only your mind but your body as well. Some people may feel lightheaded or generally unwell. But it is not something that lasts forever. Being able to explore Peru can be a great opportunity to explore your psyche

About The Ceremonies

about ceremonies ayahuasca in peru

Participants arrive before the ceremony begins to show respect for the healer, or healers, who lead the ceremony. The master of the ceremony or Shaman usually prepares the site for the ceremony first. This consists of cleaning the space with Mapacho tobacco puffs, prayers, songs, and blessings.

After the initial preparations, presentations can take place. If you are planning a trip to Peru , it is a good idea to find out about the different retreats available.

The Beginning of the Ceremony

beginning ceremony ayahuasca in peru

The beginning of a ceremony can be an unsettling time. As each participant’s consciousness expands, symptoms of dizziness and malaise may appear. Physical purging or vomiting is usually more frequent during the start of the ceremony. The purge is considered a cleansing process where the experience is a metaphysical equivalent where you expel all those trapped feelings and traumas.

Music as a Tool of Healing

healing music ayahuasca in peru

The healer can sing throughout the ceremony as patients navigate their own visions and experiences. Shamans also use the Icaros to mark the pace and rhythm of the ceremony. Either to raise or lower the intensity. This is most often seen with drum beats that can go faster or slower depending on the timing.

Closing of the Ceremony

The ceremony usually ends with an Icarus that helps close the healing circle. The healer provides patients with protection against any kind of spiritual vulnerability before leaving. After the end of the ceremony, the lights are turned on and a small talk is given.

The shaman is free to add a few words for each of the patients or a general talk. Then the lights go on and people are free to go to rest. The ceremonies can last until dawn, due to the duration of the effects of Ayahuasca. It is one of the strongest and most powerful healing experiences that Peru offers . If you are looking for something that changes your perspective forever, this is a good opportunity.

What to Expect from the Ceremony

what to expect ayahuasca in peru

So in general, what you can expect from Ayahuasca is an alteration and amplification of your state of consciousness. The Ayahuasca experience can result in an extraordinary encounter with the “I”. As well as the identification of a true “I” previously unrecognized and apparently rediscovered. During the experience, there is no dissolution or loss of consciousness. On the contrary, only one modification of it occurs. The subject is aware throughout the session of who he is, where he is, and what he has taken. By calling the participants by their names, they respond, but this can lead them away from their main visions.

Where to experience Ayahuasca in Peru?

where to experience ayahuasca in peru

Also within the different lodges that specialize in services within the jungle can offer these ceremonies. Some of these ceremonies can be enjoyed going deep into the jungle. But as with any experience you’re looking to enjoy, do a little research before embarking on it. You can book it along with your tickets to the Inca citadel and enjoy the mysteries of Machu Picchu . The possibilities are many, so it is better to enjoy it with a prestigious agency or company.

Preparing Before Arrival

ayahuasca

Before you arrive at the retreat, you must prepare your body. This all starts weeks before you arrive as you have to do a cleansing yourself. To get the best experience possible, there are a few things that you need to do to give yourself the best chance.

Here are the things that you should stop at least a week before you arrive at the temple:

  • Smoking cigarettes.
  • Smoking marihuana.
  • Drinking alcohol.
  • Having any caffeine.
  • Having sex.
  • Masturbation.

These are done to help make sure your body can go through any withdrawal symptoms – especially with smoking and drinking – so you don’t have them at the temple. Abstaining from sex and masturbation is said to keep your mind clear and free for the best communication between you and your shadow self.

There are also things you should stop doing at least two weeks before you arrive at the temple:

  • Taking medications like antidepressants.
  • Eating processed foods.
  • Often eating meat as well or products from animals (milk, honey, and eggs).

Many medications have ill effects when used with Ayahuasca. There are also claims that the more western medicine will block how Ayahuasca in Peru works. The energy from the medication can stop the healing process and give you a less than authentic experience. What you should do is contact the temple to see what their rules are.

Psychosis medication is one of the things that must be stopped completely.  These medications can have deadly effects if taken with Ayahuasca.

The vegan diet is often recommended, as well.  Each temple has a different diet that they follow. About two weeks before your arrival, they will recommend starting it. It is what the temple and the healers found work best for each person.

Common Pricing for Retreats

The price of your retreat will vary from place to place. However, we have found some of the most common expenses for each retreat. Keep in mind that it does not include the airfare needed to get to Peru and back.

The lowest amount that has been found is USD 800.  This is typical for your week-long stay and covers just what is in the resort.

The price goes up from there.  It can range from $1,000 to USD 1,500, depending on the length of your stay.  The more extended the visit, the more it costs

Most of the time, you will have to put down a deposit that cannot be refunded. Then you would pay the rest of it the closer you get to your stay date.

Going on a retreat is not going to be a cheap thing. The price reflects the skills of the healers and the amount of attention you would get at each place, as well as the facilities at each place that you can use.

Final Thoughts of an Ayahuasca Ceremony

Ayahuasca Ceremony

While there seem to be many benefits to this ceremony, it has to be done with care. Without the necessary care, there is no way to know if this is safe. More research has to be done on the scientific front to know for sure if this is a safe thing to partake in.

If you are looking for one, though, then Peru is the place to be. An Ayahuasca ceremony in Peru is going to be the only way you can get an authentic experience. Just keep in mind that there are dangers.

Know your risks before you sign up for a retreat.  Know that a positive experience isn’t guaranteed no matter what you do.

Remember that there are plenty of people out there doing an Ayahuasca ceremony without being trained in it. Keep yourself safe, look into who is doing the ceremony, and actually be a healer. It is the only way to keep yourself safe at the end of the day.

Huacachina: Complete Guide to Peru’s Desert Oasis

Aerial view of the Huacachina desert oasis in Peru

While Peru may be best known for its Andean landscapes, around 10% of the country is actually made up of sandy coastal desert. One of the best places to see this side of Peru is at Huacachina, a unique desert oasis located just a few hours south of Lima near the city of Ica. Spend a day here and you’ll have the chance to marvel at vast sand dunes reminiscent of the Sahara, take a paddle boat out onto the lagoon, go for a ride on a dune buggy, or even go sandboarding.

Table of Contents:

Best Time to Visit

How to get there, what to bring, where to eat, where to stay, plan your trip.

The town of Huacachina is centered around the eponymous Laguna Huacachina , a small lagoon fed by a natural spring and framed by leafy green palms. The town is surrounded by massive sand dunes that are both picturesque and perfect for adventures activities like sandboarding and dune buggy rides. Tourism is the only industry here, and the lagoon is surrounded by tour agencies, restaurants and hotels catering to visitors.

Many Lima residents come to Huacachina on the weekends to enjoy the sunshine and get away from the chaos of city life. It is also a popular stop-off for travelers who visit on a day trip or stay overnight on their way to visit Paracas , Nazca or Arequipa .

Huacachina has long been a popular destination for both domestic and international visitors. The waters of the oasis were once believed to have healing powers, and it was during the 1960s that the town became a resort for wealthy Peruvians coming to take advantage of those therapeutic properties. Once the playground of Peru’s elite, Huacachina now has the air of a former beauty queen. The restaurants and hotels that line the small lagoon are composed of old Spanish colonial revival architecture that bring to mind an earlier era.

Nowadays Huacachina is most popular with 20-something partiers and thrill-seekers drawn to the town’s adventure sports, but even visitors who aren’t interested in those activities will find something to enjoy about this quaint town with a long history.

Along Huacachina’s main walkway you’ll find a statue of mermaid, which is a depiction of a well-known legend about the lake’s origins. One version of the story goes that a young Inca princess was walking in the desert, brushing her hair while looking at her reflection in a mirror when she spotted a hunter watching her.

Frightened by the man, she dropped the mirror which then shattered and transformed into the lagoon. The princess then dove into the water to hide, but when she later emerged she found that she had been transformed into a mermaid and that the tunic she had left behind was now transformed into the dunes around the lake. According to the legend, she can be heard singing at night when there is a full moon.

Huacachina offers several different activities that are worth experiencing during your visit. Here are some of the most popular things to do in Huacachina:

Sandboarding

Without a doubt, the activity that Huacachina is most famous for is sandboarding. Similar to snowboarding, sandboarding involves coasting down sand dunes on a wooden board specially designed for the sport. If it sounds terrifying, don’t worry – it’s actually really fun! Kids, tweens, teens, and moms and dads of all ages have tested their skills on the slopes of Huacachina and few regret having given it a shot.

There are couple different techniques for sandboarding. Experienced sandboarders or more daring individuals can board down the dunes while standing upright. It’s possible to control your balance by taking a wide stance and slowing your board down by dragging your toes in the sand. Another option is the embrace the “tummy technique” and coast head first laying flat on your board. Just make sure that you follow your guide’s safety guidelines and you’ll have a blast no matter what technique you choose!

Another popular activity for thrill-seekers in Huacachina is a four-wheel drive dune buggy ride through the desert. Strap yourself in for the ride of your life and cruise full-throttle through the dunes. Climb to the top of a dune and hold on tight for the downward plunge before making another hairpin turn up the next desert hill.

Many tours combine both sandboarding and dune buggies into a single activity. Riding the buggies up to the top of the dunes saves you a tiring uphill walk, and then you just sandboard back down to the bottom!

Paddle Boat

For a more relaxed way to spend the afternoon, spend some time out on the lagoon in a paddle boat. The boats are available for rent at the lake’s shore. This also is a great family-friendly way to enjoy the oasis if traveling with children.

Vineyard Tour

The Ica region is where most of Peru’s wine and pisco (a type of strong grape brandy, considered Peru’s national liquor) is produced, so one of the best things to do while visiting Huacachina is to take a tour of a nearby vineyard. Enjoy an afternoon sampling pisco sours and taking in some beautiful scenery at one of several wineries and pisco producers in the area.

Hike Up the Dunes

While visiting Huacachina, make sure to take a hike up to the top of the dunes surrounding the oasis and snap some photos. If you happen to be staying overnight or are still in town later in the day, this is also one of the most magical and photogenic places in Peru to enjoy a sunset.

Huacachina is conveniently located near many of southern Peru’s most famous tourist sites. If you find yourself in this area, make sure to visit the nearby Paracas National Reserve , Ballestas Islands , and of course the enigmatic Nazca Lines .

Weather in Huacachina is consistently warm and sunny, with very little rain occurring in this dry desert climate. Because of this consistently pleasant weather, Huacachina can be visited all year round. If planning a trip to Peru, it’s a good idea to learna bout the best time to visit Peru since other destinations and regions tend to have less predictable weather.

The Huacachina Oasis is located just 10 minutes from the city of Ica, a major hub about 5 hours south of Lima. If visiting Peru on a guided tour package, you can easily add a stop in Huacachina to your Paracas tour or Nazca tour .

If traveling independently, the best way to get to Huacachina is by taking a bus from Lima to the city of Ica. Once in Ica you can hire a taxi to take you the short 10 minute ride to the oasis town of Huacachina. If you are traveling by rental car , the Huacachina Oasis is connected to Ica by a paved road and is easy to find in any GPS system.

THINGS TO DO IN HUACACHINA ICA

Depending on what time you arrive, the first thing you’re going to want to do is head over to South America’s ONLY natural desert oasis which is just a short walk from anywhere inside the village.

Needless to say, this one of the must-visit places in Peru you should add to your itinerary.

Sandboarding down the mammoth Huacachina sand dunes is another one of the best things to do when visiting this amazing Peru oasis.

Some accommodations offer complimentary sandboards for guests to use otherwise you can rent them from the locals in town. Grab a board, hike for around twenty minutes to the top of the highest dune and take the plunge!

Once you’re all done with sandboarding you can jump in one of the dune buggies with an experienced driver and zap around the desert dunes. Be sure to pack your GoPro camera to capture all the action. A dune buggy tour will set you back around $25.

Another one of the best things to do is watch the sunrise or sunset from the top of the nearest sand dunes.

I was amazed at the amount of cloud movement going on when I hiked to the top of the Huacachina dunes for sunrise one morning, watching them sweeping in and around the oasis, up and over the dunes, and into the oblivion.

Watching the sunrise was by far the best moment that I enjoyed most during my visit to this majestic desert oasis!

THE LEGEND OF HUACACHINA OASIS

Peruvian legend has it that the oasis was created when a native princess stripped naked to bathe, but after looking in a mirror she spotted a male hunter approaching her from behind.

She fled leaving her mirror behind, which turned into a lake. It is rumored that the princess still resides at the bottom of the Huacachina Oasis as a mermaid.

Swimming in the oasis is possible; locals believe the water and mud to be therapeutic, ridding those of arthritis, asthma, and bronchitis.

If you’re not game for a swim or mud scrub, relax on the sandy shores of the Huacachina oasis or rent one of the paddle boats to take out onto the lagoon.

Visiting the inside is like walking through a maze, there are even small signs all around the cathedral tracing where to walk, and pointing you in the right direction! The walls are meticulously decorated and painted with intricate floral designs and religious themes.

The church rarely holds service and is instead a museum open for the public to visit.

Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics

The museum does an excellent job of telling the full story of the exciting space race between the USSR and the US! It highlights the brightest moments in Russian history and humanity and is very interesting and fun for all ages!

If you’re a fan of space or just curious about gaining insight into Russia’s fascinating history of space exploration, make sure to add this to your 3 day itinerary in Moscow!

The Alexander Garden

  • A tranquil place to relax near the Red Square
  • Green lawns dotted with sculptures and lovely water features
  • The park is open every day and has no entrance fee

The Alexander Garden was one of the first urban public parks in Moscow! The garden premiered in 1821 and was built to celebrate Russia’s victory over Napoleon’s forces in 1812!

The park is beautiful and well maintained with paths to walk on and benches to rest on. The park contains three separate gardens: the upper garden, middle garden, and lower garden.

The Alexander Garden

Located in the upper garden, towards the main entrance to the park is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier with its eternal flame. This monument was created in 1967 and contains the body of a soldier who fell during the Great Patriotic War!

The park stretches along all the length of the western Kremlin wall for about half a mile. Due to its central location in the city, it’ll be easily accessible when you’re out exploring The Red Square.

It provides a bit of relief from the city’s high-energy city streets. Bring a picnic lunch, go for a walk, or just sit and people watch, this is one of the best Moscow sites to wind-down and relax!

Ostankino Television Tower

  • Television and radio tower in Moscow
  • Currently the tallest free-standing structure in Europe
  • Make sure you bring your passport when you visit, you can’t go up without it!

For spectacular views of the city, make sure to add the Ostankino Television Tower to your itinerary for Moscow! This impressive free-standing structure provides stunning views of the city in every direction. The glass floor at the top also provides great alternative views of the city!

Ostankino Television Tower

It takes just 58 seconds for visitors to reach the Tower’s observation deck by super fast elevator. The tower is open every day for long hours and is a great site in Moscow to check out! There is even a restaurant at the top where you can enjoy rotating views of the city while you dine on traditional Russian cuisine or European cuisine!

The tower is somewhat of an architectural surprise in a city that is not known for skyscrapers! To see the city from a new perspective, make sure to add this stop to your Moscow itinerary!

Izmaylovo District

  • The most popular attractions in this district are the kremlin and the flea market
  • Outside of the city center and easy to reach via metro
  • Most popular during the summer and on weekends

Travel outside the city center and discover a unique area of the city! The Izmaylovo District is a popular destination for locals and tourists alike, and one of the coolest places to see in Moscow! The two main attractions we recommend checking out are the Kremlin and the flea market.

The Izmailovo Kremlin was established as a cultural center and molded after traditional Russian architecture. This colorful complex is home to several single-subject museums, including a Russian folk art museum and a vodka museum!

Izmaylovo District

Next to the Kremlin is the Izmailovo open-air market, which dates back to the 17th century! The market is connected to the Izmailovo Kremlin by a wooden bridge. Pick up all your Russian souvenirs here, including traditional handicrafts, paintings, books, retro toys, and Soviet memorabilia!

You will find many hand-made and hand-painted options available at higher prices, as well as mass-produced souvenir options at lower prices!

Museum of Soviet Arcade Games

  • Closed on Mondays
  • Filled with old arcade games that visitors get to try out!
  • The museum also includes a small cafe and burger shop

For something a little different, check out the Museum of Soviet Arcade Games! The museum features roughly 60 machines from the Soviet era, including video games, pinball machines, and collaborative hockey foosball! The machines inside the museum were produced in the USSR in the mid-1970s.

Museum of Soviet Arcade Games

The best part is, most of the games are still playable! Purchase tickets and try the games out for yourself! The museum also has a neat little screening room that plays old Soviet cartoons and an area with Soviet magazines! This unique attraction is a fun addition to a 3 day itinerary in Moscow, and an attraction that all ages will enjoy!

Whether you’re spending one day in Moscow, or more, safety is an important thing to keep in mind when traveling to a big city! Overall, Moscow is a very safe place to visit. However, it is always recommended that tourists take certain precautions when traveling to a new destination!

The police in Moscow is extremely effective at making the city a safe place to visit and do their best to patrol all of the top Moscow, Russia tourist attractions. However, tourists can still be a target for pickpockets and scammers.

Moscow has a huge flow of tourists, therefore there is a risk for pickpocketing. Simple precautions will help eliminate your chances of being robbed. Stay vigilant, keep your items close to you at all times, and don’t flash your valuables!

If you’re planning a solo Moscow itinerary, you should have no need to worry, as the city is also considered safe for solo travelers, even women. Stay in the populated areas, try and not travel alone late at night, and never accept rides from strangers or taxis without a meter and correct signage.

The threat of natural disasters in Moscow is low, with the exception of severe winters when the temperature can dip below freezing! Bring a good, warm jacket if you visit in Winter.

However, please note that Russian views on homsexuality are far less accepting than those in Western Europe. Likewise, Non-Caucasian travellers may sadly encounter racism in Russia .

ALWAYS sort out your backpacker insurance before your trip. There’s plenty to choose from in that department, but a good place to start is Safety Wing .
