For those craving a break from all that saddle time, non-riding activities include spa treatments, a hot air balloon ride, a visit to the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum, and more.

a group of people riding bikes

Pedal rolling farmland hills, sample craft bourbon, and explore the history of the Bluegrass State in this guided group tour through Kentucky. With that ethos, the trip takes riders on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail , a region encompassing large-scale distilleries where you’ll cycle past idyllic pastures, sprawling country estates, and farms that raise Thoroughbred stallions.

Off the bike, you’ll jam out to bluegrass music, do a behind-the-scenes distillery tour, and sample Southern cuisine while staying in plush accommodations, including a medieval-style castle hotel with its own farm-to-table restaurant.

Participants rave about the experience, describing it as “the trip of a lifetime” and “very far off the usual tourist trail.” Several mileage options, ranging from 16 to 55 miles a day, make the experience accessible for varying abilities.

Bike tours are tremendously popular adventure vacations. But what are the best bike tours in the United States and who are the most experienced tour guides? In this article, we’ve listed 10 of the top bike tours in North America.

We’re confident that at least one will inspire you to start packing your bike.

White Rim Trail

Route of the hiawatha.

  • Oregon Coast Bike Route

Napa Valley Vine Trail

  • Going to the Sun Road
  • A Tour of Vermont
  • Kualoa Ranch
  • Haines-Skagway
  • Blue Ridge Parkway
  • Shark Valley Bike Loop

Utah Bike Tour | White Rim Trail

The White Rim Trail outside Moab, Utah is on the bucket list of many cycling enthusiasts. Impressively, this 100 mile long primitive trail in Canyonlands National Park is full of technical terrain, looping switchbacks, rolling hills and stunning scenery. If you love off-road adventure, the White Rim Trail is an excellent destination for a bicycle tour.

Bike tours for the White Rim Trail are 4-days long and cost $999 per person. The bike touring season starts in the spring, breaks for summer, and picks up again in the fall. Escape Adventures is an experienced tour guide offering mountain bike rentals for about $80 a day.

Route of the Hiawatha

The Route of the Hiawatha is an outstanding self-guided bicycle tour for those looking for a short, one-day retreat. This tour along the Montana-Idaho border winds through 15 miles of early 1900s railway featuring 10 train tunnels and 7 sky-high trestles. Periodically, you can stop to appreciate waterfalls and lookouts where you can learn about the history of the Hiawatha. And, there’s a lot to do when you’re not riding. For instance, many tourists enjoy the scenic chairlift ride to the summit of Lookout Pass. Others delight in spending an afternoon in the quaint town of Wallace, Idaho .

The Route of the Hiawatha bike tour comes with a free helmet headlamp to help you make your way through the tour’s long, dark tunnels. Bicycle and helmet rentals are available at the lodge. Because the trail is on Forest Service land, only Class-1 eBikes are allowed (pedal assistance up to 20mph and no throttle).

The bike trail itself is mostly downhill. On the way up, you can choose to power through the uphill climb, or save your quads and take the bus. Tickets for the self-guided tour are available online or in person. Adult tickets cost $36 for Friday, Saturday or Sunday, and are half-price the rest of the week.

Oregon Coast Bike Route

Oregon Coast Bike Tours

The Oregon Coast Bike Route is held in high-esteem by cyclists all over the world. The journey is 370 miles long and takes you from the Washington border all the way to California. Along the way, you’ll see impressive landscapes, ocean-view panoramas, picturesque lighthouses and famous landmarks.

Details of Cycling Escape’s 6-day bicycle tour are available on their website. Expect to cover between 50 and 75 miles each day. Meals and lodging are included for just under $3,000 per person.

Napa Valley Vine Trail Bike Tours

Wine, dine and bike your way through Napa Valley. The Napa Valley Vine Trail offers 47 miles of level, bicycle-friendly paths from Vallego’s Ferry to Yountville. Currently, the Napa Valley Vine Trail Coalition has about 12.5 miles of trail construction completed. You’re welcome to take your bike down the entire trail but be prepared for a few bumps along the way.

Napa Valley Bike Tours will provide you with a bike (or upgrade to an eBike) and 12 to 14 miles of guided fun along the Napa Valley Vine Trail. You’ll visit two wineries and enjoy a catered picnic lunch. While you’re riding, your tour guide will provide you with information about the valley’s history and vine-to-bottle process. With Northern California’s temperate climate, this bicycle tour is ready to be enjoyed year round.

Going-to-the-Sun Road Bike Tours

Going-to-the-Sun Road

Glacier National Park welcomes millions of visitors each year. We recommend planning your bike tour in the spring because Going-to-the-Sun Road is closed to cars in May and June, but open to bikes!

Glacier Guides leads a spring tour up and down Going-to-the-Sun Road. With almost 3,500 feet of elevation change this tour is considered to be moderately difficult. Unfortunately, due to insurance regulations, you aren’t allowed to bring your own bike. However, your Glacier Guides tour includes a bike or eBike rental.

Vermont Fall Foliage

Vermont’s Fall Foliage Bike Tours

There aren’t many places more beautiful in the fall than the Northeastern United States. Each year, cyclists travel from all over the world to catch a glimpse of the region’s deciduous trees as they burst into color. Vermont’s valleys and mountainous areas combine to make it a spectacular destination for a fall foliage bike tour.

Sojourn Bicycling & Active Vacations offers a 6-day fall color tour. Vermont bicycle tours start at $3,250 per person and include three days of biking. You’ll experience the small town charm of the Lake Champlain Valley before making your way through the Green Mountains to Stowe. You’ll also visit historic sites like the Old Round Church, sample homemade cider and donuts, and stay at the exclusive Inn at Shelburne Farms . Sojourn has a limited number of bikes available to rent so book yours early unless you plan to bring your own.

Kualoa Ranch, Hawaii

Kualoa Ranch Hawaii Bike Tours

Experience one of Hawaii’s favorite islands by bicycle. If you’re a fan of Jurassic Park , 50 First Dates or Jumanji , you can even opt to bike through the Kualoa Ranch Private Nature Preserve where these movies were filmed.

The Kualoa Ranch 90-minute Electric Mountain Bike Tour is the perfect way to experience the jungle, valley and sacred land that make up the Kualoa Ranch Private Nature Reserve. This amazing bike tour includes your eBike rental and costs $120 for adults.

Haines-Skagway, Alaska

Haines-Skagway Alaska

Alaska is home to beautiful roadways for biking. Unfortunately, the state’s electric bike regulations can be hard to navigate. This is one reason why it’s always a good idea to book with an experienced tour guide.

May through September, REI Adventures organizes a great Alaskan bike tour. This 4-day road bike tour routes through the temperate rainforests of Southeast Alaska, through one of North America’s longest fjords and into the alpine tundra. Each day, you can expect to ride about 25 miles. Lodging, meals and park entry fees are all-included for $1,899.

Blue Ride Parkway

Blue Ridge Parkway Bike Tours

Experience one of America’s favorite bicycle tours. The Blue Ridge Parkway offers diversity in climate, vegetation, wildlife and geological features. And, it’s world-renowned for its ecological biodiversity. Within the 469 mile area that makes up the Parkway, you will find the oldest river in North America, the deepest gorge east of the Grand Canyon, and the highest waterfall east of the Rockies!

Each summer, the Adventure Cycling Association leads a 7-day bike tour across the Blue Ridge Parkway. Due to elevation gains (up to 6,700 feet per day), this tour ranks as one of the most challenging the Association offers. Budget $1,849 per person for this tour. Groups of 5 or more save 15%.

Shark Valley Bike Loop

Shark Valley Bike Loop: Everglades National Park

Take a trip to America’s largest subtropical wilderness for a one-of-a-kind bicycle tour. Everglades National Park is home to numerous rare and endangered species. And, as a World Heritage site and International Biosphere Reserve, it’s a terrific vacation spot for history buffs and wildlife lovers alike.

Everglades National Park offers ranger led bike tours of the Shark Valley Bicycle Loop from January to April every year. On your 15 mile tour, you’ll learn about the various ecosystems, wildlife and cultural history of the Everglades. Reservations are required and can be made a week in advance.

Ready to book your bike tour? Whether you’re planning a day trip or a week-long excursion, one of the tour guides listed among the Top 10 Bike Tours In North America will be happy to assist you or answer any questions you may have about their services.

Find Your Grand Adventure with a 2024 Guided Tour

2024 guided tours are filling up. find your adventure today.

With an Adventure Cycling Guided Tour, you can count on five things:

  • Curated experiences traversing the histories, cultures, and landscapes of the U.S.
  • A tour type to fit your travel style
  • Small groups of 10-15 participants, except for our larger Fully Supported Events
  • A fully planned trip, without the worry of routing, navigation, or reservations, from an experienced organization
  • Warm fuzzies knowing your Guided Tour purchase supports a nonprofit and its mission, not a for-profit company

We’re excited to hit the road with you!

Our goal is to facilitate a life-changing journey with a Guided Tour that fits your needs. Our Guided Tours provide a range of experiences: long weekend to epic, pavement to dirt, historically focused to earning the scenic vistas. They also come in a variety of lengths and difficulties as well as different levels of support and price points. We offer everything from self-sufficient nights under the stars to fully catered experiences and inn-to-inn options.

Every tour comes with knowledgeable Tour Leaders, routing, navigation, and reservations. All you have to do is participate! Some tours provide opportunities to get to know your fellow riders better, such as group-made meals and grocery shopping, while other types of tours are less interactive. Participation in these small group activities on some tour types is all part of the Adventure Cycling experience.

“Without a doubt, the best part of the tour was the friendships we made. We came from all levels of experience. Everyone was supportive. Every single day, no matter what the difficulty of the day, we laughed.” – Sam, Tour Participant

Types of Tours

We have a variety of tour formats that suit different styles of touring. All come in different lengths and levels of difficulty, which we call Adventure Levels, ranging from Level 1 to Level 5. Generally, our tours have between 10 and 15 participants, with the exception being our larger Fully Supported Events.

Self-Contained This type of touring is all pedal power and no vehicular support. All shared gear is carried by the group, and cooking responsibilities rotate among its members. A majority of nights are spent outdoors under the stars. An indoor stay or restaurant may be sprinkled in just when you need it the most.

Inn-to-Inn This is the type of tour for those of us who prefer the comforts of a cozy bed. As the name suggests, each night is spent indoors. Breakfasts and dinners are enjoyed in restaurants. Although there is no vehicle support, you’ll only need to carry the minimal gear of your clothes, toiletries, basic repair items, water, and a bag lunch for the day.

Van-Supported If you prefer touring without the load of a full set of panniers, but you still love camping, we have a van and trailer to haul your gear. Just worry about pedaling. Carry nothing more than water/lunch/snacks and maybe some rain gear if the weather’s dodgy. You’ll still have fun with your partner rotating on camp cooking duty. But not to worry, on certain tours, there are occasional restaurant meals and indoor stays.

Fully Supported and Family Adventure  Events The top level of support! Meals are catered. Luggage is hauled. Starry night camping for those into tents and motel options for those who aren’t. Water and snack stops along the route. Just enjoy the riding, the scenery, and the people to your front and back. These tours are larger in size (20–50 participants) and staffed by several tour leaders all looking out for you.

Education Not sure you’re ready to take the leap into full-on independent touring? Our Intro to Road and Intro to Gravel Touring & Bikepacking courses help you break down the basics. There’s some in-person classroom work before setting out as a group on a short self contained tour. We also offer Leadership Training Courses for those experienced in bike touring but want to start leading their own groups.

“This was my first organized multiday trip. I was traveling solo and I had a wonderful time. I could set my own pace and never felt rushed. The food was fantastic and there was lots of it! I can’t say enough good things about the leaders. I will definitely sign up for another one.” – Kelly, Tour Participant

Doing Good with Every Pedal Stroke

Adventure Cycling is a nonprofit. Every Guided Tour purchase supports our mission of inspiring, empowering, and connecting people to travel by bicycle.

For nearly 50 years, we’ve been researching and mapping one of the largest bicycle route systems in the world. And we’re not done yet. Our programs focus on making bicycle travel more accessible to more people through mapping short and long routes, hosting educational resources and events, and creating an open, supportive community for all riders.

All of our tours are listed below. If you have any questions, give us a call or reach out through our online chat. We’re here for you — because Your Adventure Awaits!

The 6 Best Bikepacking Routes in the US

These epic routes cover a variety of climates and distances and are sure to make for a memorable adventure..

Gravel and mountain bikes are great tools for exploring your backyard or taking a quick ride to relax and unwind. They can also be the conduit for multiday and weeklong adventures.

Throw in some careful route planning and dust off your camping equipment, and you’re bikepacking , the adventure-oriented cousin to bike touring. Bikepacking has never been easier than it is now, with advances in equipment and a robust library of routes that are shared online.

We’ve assembled six of the best bikepacking routes in the US. Whether you’re looking to go out for a couple-hundred miles or a few thousand, there’s something here to whet your appetite.

Great Divide Mountain Bike Route (Jasper, Alberta to Antelope Wells, New Mexico)

The Great Divide Mountain Bike Route (GDMBR) is considered the grand dame of bikepacking routes in the US, and perhaps the world. For over 3,000 miles, the mostly-dirt route traces the spine of the Continental Divide, connecting surfaces ranging from pavement, gravel roads, four-wheel-drive roads, singletrack, and old railroad beds. The mega-route is not for the faint of heart: it undulates with some 200,000 feet of elevation gain.

As one would imagine, there’s a lot to see and do along such an expansive line on a map, and the GDMBR teems with spectacular scenery and access to parts of the American West that aren’t on most tourist maps. Bear, deer, wild horses, pronghorn antelope, eagles, osprey, and sandhill cranes may be riding companions. Abandoned ghost towns and deserted mines hopscotch along the route with modern day amenities including small inns, restaurants, and stores that cater to and welcome long distance cyclists.

Riding the GDMBR is a true DIY adventure with options to turn it into a multi-month or year-long project. For those with time constraints — and a competitive spirit — the Tour Divide unofficial bikepacking race departs Banff in late June and uses the route to see who can make it to the Mexico border the fastest.

Distance : 3,084 miles, 200,000 + feet of climbing

Recommended bike : Hard-tail or rigid mountain bike

Estimated time to complete: Three weeks to three months

Highlights: Grand Teton National Park, The Great Divide Basin in Wyoming, meeting other riders at the Brush Mountain Lodge in Colorado, eating pie in Pie Town, NM

Coconino Loop (Arizona)

The Coconino Loop is a bikepacking route for mountain bikers. The 240-mile loop takes in some of northern Arizona’s finest singletrack in both Flagstaff and Sedona, and offers options to lay over in both places to go mountain biking unloaded. For riders who may only have time to complete the loop, the route stays interesting every day with varied terrain, stunning landscapes, and a perfect mix of on-your-toes and relaxed riding.

best bikepacking routes USA Coconino Loop

Amenity-rich Flagstaff is a great place to start and end the Coconino Loop. From there, an interconnected network of jeep tracks, gravel roads, and singletracks take you away from civilization, although never for long enough that you run out of food or water. While it’s easy to camp along the route, the spacing of resupply points for food and accommodation is manageable for those who prefer to carry less. The terrain on the Coconino Loop is varied and at times, unrelenting. Loose sandy washes give way to hard-packed gravel roads, including the infamous Mingus Mountain climb which stretches from 3,300 to 7,800 feet in 10 miles. Nevertheless, the rewards are constant along the route, whether in the form of dizzying views of red-rock spires and snow-capped peaks, or a plate heaping with french fries and a cold chocolate milkshake at a main street diner.

Distance: 240 miles, 20,654 feet of climbing

Recommended bike: Hard tail or full suspension mountain bike

Estimated time to complete: 5-7 days

Highlights: Arizona Trail singletrack in Flagstaff, Sedona vortices, Mingus Mountain climb, Rte 66 kitsch in Williams

Idaho Hot Springs Loop (Idaho)

The Idaho Hot Springs Loop is easily one of the bikepacking wonders of the world. The 500-mile route takes in some 50 natural hot springs, ranging from developed resort-style springs to remote natural pools. The route is easily accessed from Idaho’s capital city of Boise, where bikepackers can find all the necessary amenities before starting or ending the route. Furthermore, the Hot Springs Loop can be modified in various ways for people who may not have time to complete the entire route.

For the most part, bikepackers will encounter smooth gravel roads, four-wheel-drive roads, and some pavement and singletrack along the route. However, the mountainous terrain means that you will either be gaining elevation or descending for the entire time. The highest mountain passes are near Ketchum and Stanley. This route requires both a good degree of fitness and comfort with fast-changing mountain weather conditions. Nevertheless, there are also ample opportunities for lodging along the route, and in spite of how remote the route sometimes feels, you’re never more than two days away from resupply.

Distance : 518 miles

Recommended bike: Gravel or mountain bike

Estimated time to complete: 7-14 days

Highlights: Hot springs, cafes in Stanley and Ketchum, icy cold rivers and the snow-capped Sawtooth Mountains

VTXL (Vermont)

When the Covid pandemic shut down bike racing in 2020, professional cyclist Ted King wondered if there was a dirt-road route that ran the length of his home state of Vermont. He piqued the curiosity of master route-maker Joe Cruz, and the VTXL was born. The 300-mile route links the Green Mountain State’s northeast and southwest corners and is 99 percent rideable, with a smidgen of hike-a-bike for posterity.

The state of Vermont allegedly boasts the country’s highest proportion of unpaved roads, coupled with a population that’s higher in cows than human beings. Riders are never far from quaint, small-town amenities along this route. It’s possible to find lodging every night if desired, and sourcing local food at small country stores, rather than carrying a large backup supply, can be an adventure in its own right. That said, more self-sufficient riders can easily find camping along the way.

The route can be ridden in either direction, though it may be somewhat harder from north to south. The amount of resources increases along the southern terminus. Ride anytime from early summer to late fall.

Distance: 302 miles, 30,600 feet of climbing

Recommended bike: Gravel

Estimated time to complete : 4-7 days

Highlights: Swimming holes, maple creemees, general stores, more cows than cars

Arkansas High Country Route

The Arkansas High Country Route is actually a combination of three adjacent loops that can easily be broken down into separate trips or modified into various configurations. Each loop has easy access to one of Northwest Arkansas’ hub cities as beginning and ending points; here is your excuse to finally visit bike-crazy Bentonville .

In general, the AHCR route is about 50 percent gravel and 50 percent pavement, so most riders will opt for a gravel bike. However, gearing and tire choice are worth poring over; climbs can reach gradients of 17-21 percent and some gravel sections are riddled with washboards and ball-sized boulders.

Arkansas lives up to its nickname ‘The Natural State’ on the AHCR, as riders are treated to some of the state’s finest mountain climbs and bucolic river valleys. Along the route, wildlife is abundant and each season delivers an array of excitement, from spring showers and waterfalls to autumn foliage splendor. Although the route can feel very far from civilization at times, those are some of the most memorable sections.

Distance : 1000 miles

Recommended bike: Gravel bike or rigid mountain bike

Estimated time to complete: 5-10 days

Highlights: T he Ozark and Ouachita mountains, cooling off in the rivers, diner food, nice dogs

Bones 2 Blue (California)

The Bones 2 Blues route in Northern California has its origins in racing, but it makes for a fine bikepacking tour for those who love riding singletrack abutted by stunning scenery. The route begins and ends in Truckee, and consists of two loops: a smaller loop above Truckee (Bones) and then a big loop around Lake Tahoe (Blue). The Blue loop uses all of the bike-legal sections of the famous Tahoe Rim Trail, which is famous for its rideability and stunning scenery. In general, the entire route is mostly well-maintained singletrack with some fire roads. There is a 20-mile stretch of road riding along the scenic west shore of Lake Tahoe.

best bikepacking routes usa lake tahoe bones 2 blue

Camping is abundant along the Bones 2 Blue route, and there is plenty of tourism infrastructure like cabins, motels, restaurants, and stores to make resupply frequent and easy. Summer is high season on this route — we recommend waiting until the kids are back in school for cooler days and less crowded trails.

Distance: 250 miles, 31,000 feet of climbing

Recommended bike: Full suspension mountain bike

Estimated time to complete : 5-7 days

Highlights: Descending Donner Pass, riding around Emerald Bay, frequent swims in Lake Tahoe
