All American found immense success after its partnership with Netflix. When the third season dropped on the platform, the series earned 1.43 billion minutes of watch time and soared to the top of Nielsen’s streaming rankings, according to Variety . The popularity of All American even led to the creation of a spinoff, All American: Homecoming , which is returning for a third season this summer.

In Season 6, audiences will pick up where the last Season 5 left off. In the action-packed finale, Spencer finally poured his heart out to Olivia before she boarded her plane to London, Jordan proposed to Layla, and Patience was stabbed by Miko — just as Coop was on her way to tell Patience that she had feelings for her.

Ahead of the season premiere, Ezra told Deadline that his character is “very hyper-focused” on the NFL in Season 6. “His NFL dreams are almost like in touching distance now. In high school, it was like a fantasy. And then now he’s in college, it’s kind of become real,” he explained. “He’s focused on rebuilding this GAU team, but it’s a little closer now.”

As for how Spencer and Olivia will come together in Season 6, Logan teased that “we’re going to see them really show up for each other and just be in love.” She continued, “I mean, it’s All American , you have to have a little bit of drama. We don’t give people exactly what they want right away. So there is going to be some playful fun in there and fans might want to pull out their hair a little bit, but it’s good. It makes for good TV,” the actress joked.

Billy’s death will likely come as a shock for viewers, since the series has so far spared its main cast even though many of them have previously been at death’s door. But showrunner Nkechi Okoro Carroll told Deadline that the decision for Diggs to exit the show came about organically before plans for Season 5 were made.

“At the beginning and end of every season, I have a conversation with the cast about the journey of their character, and it was in those conversations for Taye that we started talking about, ‘Is Billy’s journey on the show over? And if so, what would an exit look like?’ To me, there was only ever one exit for Billy if he was leaving, because the character would never leave after fighting so hard for his family,” she said.

Carroll spoke with Deadline about building Season 5 around Diggs’ exit and gave insight into how the remaining episodes will dive deeper into the shared grief of those mourning the loss, especially his family (both biological and chosen).

DEADLINE: I was pretty shocked to learn that this death was coming. Is this something you’d planned when you opened the writers room for Season 5?

DEADLINE: After you had this conversation with Taye, how did you inform the cast of what was coming and what were their reactions?

CARROLL: All of the cast members, God bless them, because I swear they couldn’t keep a secret to save their lives. As soon as Taye and I had figured out that this was right and this is when we wanted it to happen — and after I pitched it to the network and studio and they signed off on it — I sat down with each cast member and as I walked them through their journey of what Season 5 was gonna be, I told them. I told it to them like I was pitching them the episode and how it happened, and without fail, every single one of them cried. The first time it happened I was like ‘Whoa, I thought I was the only one that was gonna cry doing this.’ Every single cast member, when they realized how it was going to happen and when it was gonna happen, it was such an organic, visceral experience of almost early grief and anticipation of what was happening. So they all really dug in with each episode knowing this was coming and it brought an extra layer to their work in those scenes with Billy, knowing what would be coming 11 episodes later. They’ve all done truly their best work, and they did it all while keeping this secret which is not easy to do in this town.

DEADLINE: I want to talk more about the specifics of how he died. How did you decide he would be going back onto the bus to save Jabari, of all people?

CARROLL: A lot of thought went into that over the summer before we even started the season. I felt strongly that if it was any of our main cast, or if it were his kids — Jordan, Olivia, or Spencer — of course, he’s gonna go back on the bus for them, and I don’t think anyone would question that. But I wanted to go deeper than that. This is a man whose players really are his second set of kids. Does it become more complicated if he goes back for one of those kids? Laura can’t get mad if he goes back for one of their children. But in her grief, she could get mad if he goes back for what feels to her like just another player. Was it worth the sacrifice? That’s something she’s gonna have to wrestle with. Remembering who Billy was and what he stood for and how he loved, of course that makes sense. He would have gone back for anyone. So that was the reason we settled on it being Jabari that Billy would go back for. It’s a character that our audience knows and loves and has rooted for, and he’s on the cusp of changing in his life and doing something great. How is it fair for it to be that his life would be cut short so quickly? It felt right.

DEADLINE: It really did hurt to watch Spencer listen to that voicemail from Billy just moments before finding out he was dead, especially knowing they hadn’t fully mended their relationship. How is Spencer going to handle his grief , which would have been overwhelming even if he had been on good terms with Billy?

DEADLINE: We know the Vortex is always there for each other through hard times, but now that they’re all going through this collective, shared grieving process, how are they going to lift each other up?

CARROLL: Obviously Olivia and Jordan are his children and Laura is his wife, and everyone I think is united that they come first. They lost their dad, she lost her husband. No matter what Billy meant to us, they come first. We’re definitely gonna see that attitude from the friend group. But that is a lot easier said than done when you’re going home at night and either trying to bury your grief, or cry over your grief or drink your way through your grief. However it is that various people are handling their grief, it becomes a real struggle of trying to put that aside while you’re helping other people through theirs. I actually think it’s the beauty of this group. I always say there’s your family you’re born into and you’re really blessed with that, and then there’s the family you choose and that’s the double blessing. These kids are the chosen family. So I think we’ll see the real strength of the Vortex and how solid those bonds are, no matter what pressure and weight gets put on them as we go through these next few episodes of how everyone is dealing with losing Billy. Grief isn’t linear, and it’s so different for so many people. We’re gonna give everyone their moment with their way of processing, and that becomes a story for an episode so that we really get to test the boundaries of that friend group and how they each help each other through it.

DEADLINE: When you were writing your way through each character’s grief, how did you decide what would be a realistic way for them to handle something like this?

CARROLL: Truthfully, the characters decided. We all know Spencer so well. We’ve lived with him for five seasons. Of all the options of how different people can process grief, what Spencer has been through dictated what was the most realistic authentic version for him. Same went for Olivia and Jordan. The journey they’ve been on and how much they’ve grown over the five seasons [helped determine] what looks realistic. It’s all grounded in honesty and truth from all of our grief experiences, but in terms of which grief experience makes sense for which character, we let the characters and the storyline we told over the seasons dictate that for us. It was discussed ad nauseam in the writers room as we were venturing into each person’s story, and we let the history and the authenticity of the character dictate what grief looked like for them.

What happens next for the infamous Vortex?

After a frustrating season for #Spelivia fans that thankfully ended in the season 5 finale with Spencer (Daniel Ezra) and Olivia (Samantha Logan) at least on a better path romantically, All American season 6 shows not only what happens next for the lovebirds, but what’s in the future for all the members of The Vortex. 

It’s truly a testament to the show’s fanbase that All America n was renewed back in January 2023, especially when you consider a number of The CW shows didn’t meet the same fate as media company Nexstar made changes to the fall lineup shortly after acquiring the network. 

So what can you look forward to with the new episodes? Here’s everything we know about All American season 6.  

All American season 6 release date

All American season 6 premieres on Monday, April 1, at 8 pm ET/PT on The CW. Here is a synopsis of the episode titled "Things Done Changed":

"It’s the start of a new school year and Spencer (Daniel Ezra) and Jordan (Michael Evans Behling) are officially eligible to enter the NFL draft, placing Spencer at the center of the media spotlight. Olivia (Samantha Logan) returns to LA after being changed by her time in London. Layla (Greta Onieogou) plans for the opening of her new lounge which will feature Patience’s (Chelsea Tavares) first performance since being stabbed. Elsewhere, Asher (Cody Christian) and Jaymee (guest star Miya Horcher) navigate their new lives as parents to baby AJ."

All American is an original series on The CW network, and new episodes premiere directly on the television channel. Those who don’t have traditional cable/satellite TV can still watch season 6 episodes live as they air with a subscription to live-streaming TV services such as FuboTV , Hulu Live with TV and YouTube TV . Additionally, new episodes are likely to become available to stream the day after they air on The CW app . The app is not only free, but it also doesn’t require you to log in.  

No word yet as to when the new season will premiere in the UK. 

All American season 6 cast 

The main cast are all returning sans Taye Diggs who played Coach Baker (the character died saving a high school player’s life after a bus accident). 

That means Daniel Ezra is back as Spencer James. While Ezra has been spotted in other shows like Prey and A Discovery of Witches , his most notable role to date has been in All American . 

Completing the other half of the show’s soulmates as Olivia Baker is Samantha Logan. She’s previously starred in 13 Reasons Why and Junior .

"Season 6 finds Spencer (Daniel Ezra) and his friends in momentous new chapters of their lives. Now juniors at GAU, Spencer and Jordan (Michael Evans Behling) are officially eligible to enter the NFL draft, placing Spencer, especially, at the center of the media spotlight. Egos soon clash when a new addition joins the GAU coaching staff and shifts the team dynamics. 

"Meanwhile, Olivia (Samantha Logan) returns to L.A. changed by her time in London and invigorated by a new project to honor her father’s legacy. After being apart, Spencer and Olivia try to reconnect as new versions of themselves. Layla (Greta Onieogou) also explores a new version of herself as she adds 'club owner' to her impressive list of titles. While still happily engaged to Jordan, she faces growing pressures that test their relationship and her mental health. 

"Coop (Bre-Z) flexes her legal muscles while faithfully supporting Patience (Chelsea Tavares) through her healing journey, as Patience prepares for a looming legal battle against the superfan that attacked her last season. All American showrunner explains the time jump in season 6 premiere

Olivia and Spencer are back on track!

All American picks up season 6 with a time jump of one year and three months, and we catch up with what members of the "vortex" have been up to while waiting for Olivia Baker (Samantha Logan) to come home from London. Spencer James ( Daniel Ezra ) and Jordan Baker ( Michael Evans Behling ) have rebuilt the GAU football team and are looking ahead to a potential draft; Patience Roberts (Chelsea Tavares) is dealing with the aftermath of the stabbing she survived; record label owner Layla Keating (Greta Onieogou) has opened up a lounge where Slauson Café used to be; and Asher Adams (Cody Christian) and Jaymee (Miya Horcher) are adjusting to their responsibilities as new parents.

EW spoke to showrunner Nkechi Okoro Carroll about the vortex’s new formation after the time jump and what’s ahead on All American .

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: Spencer and Olivia end the episode by deciding to recommit to each other as a couple. How is this time different in terms of their growth and potential obstacles? Their road has never been easy or simple.

NKECHI OKORO CARROLL : It’s the first sign that we’re dealing with a more mature version of Spencer and Olivia. We intentionally put them in a similar situation of unease and not knowing what each other wants, which is similar to the premiere last time they were together. It ended with Spencer breaking up with her.

The whole theme for this season is stepping into their futures. It’s a new, grown-up version of every character, not just Spencer and Olivia. The question is, how would they respond to it differently now when they aren’t freshmen in college or high school students? This episode would absolutely have ended in a break up. There wouldn’t have been the maturity to say we’ve been down this path before and instead of running and hiding, we’re hunkering down and we’re going to rediscover each other. For us in the writers’ room, we were excited about exploring Spencer and Olivia in this new chapter because they got together three minutes before Olivia jumped on a flight and they only saw each other three days over almost a year and a half. We’re exploring a brand-new version of the relationship.

They both talk about changing during their time apart, but we also see some of what has changed for Spencer. What’s ahead for Olivia in terms of her re-entry to L.A.?

We’re going to find out that London was her soul place. It is where she found herself, because for the first time, she had to navigate life by herself without her twin — which is huge — her friends, boyfriend, so when hard things came up she had to navigate it herself. I kept referencing the Marvel blip . Over that year it feels like she grew up five years by nature of navigating so much by herself, so we’re going to see her try to acclimate to L.A. again and wondering if it’s still the right place for her. She’s still so anchored to the U.K., and over the course of the season we’re going to figure out why she’s so anchored there and why it felt so much like home. If it wasn’t for Spencer, she might have stayed there.

She has also come back from London with a big project that we’ll launch in episode 2. We really see how she navigates that differently, because the older Olivia would have bulldozed her way through. The new Olivia is trying to be more considerate of everyone involved.

It seems like football is about to get in the way of Spencer and Jordan’s bond again. How does the higher stakes of the draft make their potential growing tension different this time around?

This year, the dream is so close. It’s not like they’ll have another season. We’ve got things happening that are affecting the stakes of if they’ll be able to draft and who will be able to draft and what that means. This is very different because the stakes are so much higher. How do a mature Spencer and Jordan navigate that?

And they are doing it without Billy ( Taye Diggs ), which impacts how they handle the football issues this time.

100 percent. They don’t have their father figure. They are trying to navigate this thing and the person [who] made it to the NFL and understands the pitfalls. Billy lived that and he’s not there to help navigate them through this. Yes, they have Coach Kenny, Preacher, and all these other men who have been amazing and stepped up in Billy’s absence, but this is different.

What was behind the decision to have Layla open a lounge given the last few seasons focused on her building her label?

What happened to Patience really affected her. The guilt she feels over her most prominent artist and her going aggressively at the label to push Patience into this new chapter to make her a bigger star. Part of her opening the lounge was to stay busy and stay connected to the heart of music, but be able to step back from her label. That is something she’s not even conscious of. That revelation for character comes out of a bigger journey she’s going to take this season where there’s a realizes she’s been suppressing her mental health journey from high school. She’s got the tools she needed to navigate her depression and now she’s in this pressure cooker after Patience, so we’re going to see her deal with that.

Why did you decide on the time jump?

At the heart of it, this is a show about the pursuit of the dream through the lens of football. I didn’t see how sophomore year would have felt any different from freshman year in terms of what they are navigating on the field. I wanted to come back to football in a very strong way. Not that COVID has gone away, but we figured out how to shoot football safely in a world where COVID is the reality. We’ve pulled back from football a bit because our priority on the show was keeping everyone alive and safe. The biggest way we could come back to football was to put the draft in the mix, and they’re not eligible to draft them until their junior year.

Then if we do a year jump, what does that do to the rest of the storylines? Does that get us the best version of the stories for other characters, and not just Spencer and Jordan? We realized ... Olivia found something that she loved in London while navigating her father’s passing and growing into the person she wants to be. All those pieces started to fall into place that made the time jump feel just like the most organic thing for our show and our characters.

All American is in the middle of an especially long off-season. We had already guessed that Hollywood’s dual strikes might delay the football drama’s sixth season, but the new episodes were officially punted to 2024 when The CW unveiled its fall premiere dates last month.

To help pass the time, we’ve crafted a wish list for Season 6, featuring five things we’d like to see — and one thing we definitely don’t — when the show eventually returns.

The cliffhanger that closed out Season 5 — in which Patience was stabbed by a stalker — is certainly among our chief concerns for the upcoming installments. But we’ve also got high hopes for Spencer and Olivia’s rekindled romance, JJ’s journey of self-discovery and Jordan and Layla’s nascent engagement, among other plot points.

WANT: Smooth Sailing for #Spelivia

Season 5 was a brutal one for those of us championing Spencer and Olivia’s romance: Spencer ended things with Olivia as soon as the season began, believing at the time that he was a roadblock to her journalistic ambitions, and they spent nearly every subsequent episode moping and pining for each other. But now that they’ve reconciled in the Season 5 finale, we’d prefer to see these two basking in the uncomplicated romantic bliss they’ve so earned. Let’s not have Olivia’s three-month stint in London usher in a new wave of angst for her and her beau — and as far as Liv’s journalism career is concerned, here’s hoping one of her sophomore year classes covers conflicts of interest.

WANT: Patience's Survival

All American has toyed with many a life-or-death situation, and Billy Baker’s sudden demise in Season 5 signaled that the show isn’t afraid to kill off beloved characters. But we’re holding out hope that Patience — who was stabbed by stalker fan Miko in the finale’s closing scene — will live to see the sixth season and watch as Miko is brought to justice. Patience has become an integral member of The Vortex during All American ‘s run, and we’re not sure these characters could withstand another blow after Billy’s passing. Plus, Patience and Coop seemed poised to rekindle their romance at the time that Patience was stabbed, making the prospect of her death even more devastating.

WANT: A Successful Wedding for Jordan

Full disclosure on this one: We’re not saying Jordan and Layla should be getting married, per se. Their relationship is still blossoming, they’re coming off a chaotic year, and two engagements for Jordan before he’s even 20 years old feels imprudent. But now that Jordan has given Layla that beautiful bling, we’d rather see this marriage come to fruition, instead of falling apart like Jordan and Simone’s relationship ultimately did. As young and unprepared as these crazy kids might be, watching them navigate marriage in their college years is much more creatively enticing than a second ill-fated engagement would be.

WANT: More Pep in JJ's Step

All American continues to shine an important light on mental health — particularly that of young male athletes — and it was a treat to watch Hunter Clowdus peel back the layers of JJ’s private struggles in Season 5. But JJ’s recruitment to a fraternity, and the intense partying that came along with it, often kept him isolated from the other main characters, and the season ended just as JJ rejoined The Vortex for good. We’re looking forward to watching JJ dive even deeper into his psyche in Season 6, but we’re especially excited to watch him do so alongside the support system that brings out the best and happiest in him.

WANT: More Football, Please!

All American ‘s high-octane football sequences have been part of its appeal since the pilot episode — but the sport felt more like a footnote throughout Season 5, and some of the show’s energy was lost in the process. We don’t expect that football will be these characters’ priority forever, but we do miss the high-stakes, emotional thrills that accompanied Spencer’s time on the Beverly High and Crenshaw fields. As the GAU football program rebuilds from a messy year, we wouldn’t mind spending a little more time on the gridiron.

DON'T WANT: Baby Blues for Asher and Jaymee

Jaymee’s struggle with lupus has already, understandably, been at the forefront of her pregnancy. We get that, and we expect her unpredictable health to keep playing a role as she gets farther along. What we don’t think we could stomach is a storyline — lupus-related or otherwise — that puts Jaymee or her unborn baby in danger, or ( sob ) results in a pregnancy loss. This couple is too well-matched, Jaymee too resilient, Asher too adorably overjoyed at the prospect of becoming a father to mess with this growing family in any substantial way. If the show is seeking a pregnancy-related plot twist, we’ll accept surprise twins, and nothing else.

I agree with almost everything – especially the last point. But honestly I don’t miss the football at all- was always the part I watched least before

They football was a big part because it is the boys dream to be in the NFL although it seems like jordans is changing. It has.tp be there because they all did it for different reason whether it was because that’s what they were taught, wanted it for there dad or because it is what got them through things

and we definitely don’t want some sort of love triangle between Spencer n Liv with some dude from London please don’t

Well Jordan and Layla is beautiful no lies, as for Ash and Jaymee well let’s hope n pray the baby will this evens more beautiful…Patience and Coop can they please reunite n put that Miko away for good!

The writers should make Olivia work on other stories besides sports related stories. That’s why Spencer broke up with her because she doesn’t give him space and leaked news he didn’t want to be leaked. I enjoy all the other characters but Olivia could be bossy and annoying sometimes.

I agree with it all except I would like to see more of preach and coop drama. Also maybe a series could be develop around Spencer little brother and maybe rebellion and Spencer has to try to save him from the street with help from coop and the vortex.

What I want to see Intensity from J-Lay they’re the cute couple beside Jamie and Asher. Like maybe injury prone hurt his rib and Layla is becoming a mogul and miss each other.Coach Kenny recruits another Qb. J in his feels then this bring out that scene like when they were lock in the studio.First and for most Speliva need have convo where they put it all on the table like Liv is going to used what ever access to get a story.Then Spencer bring up Billy saying journalist bring you up or down. Liv has the power to do that. His journalist girlfriend would be the first to challenge him. Then Liv bring up withholding info due cause and effect then after that build fort Knox foundation. Also more school stuff sometimes I feel they re not in school. Liv coming back from London can bring passion she has for that.

This has turned into soap opera. This is the last chance. Now that they have time i hope they will put more effor into final season. The actors are way older than they are acting so this won´t be airing long. The end is near.

I know it is unlikely, but totally thought they were going to have JJ’s struggles be related to his sexuality. But I don’t think they are going there. But it’ll be nice if he is back in the Vortex.

I love the Vortx. Spencer and Olivia need to have some happiness this season as well as Patience and Coop. I would like to see JJ get the help. He needs from the vortex for his mental health and Asher and Jamie should definitely have twins as far as Jordan and Layla, I think their marriage can wait to season 7. Layla seems a little distracted with her business, so I think their marriage can wait a season, although I think they should have some drama that being married and the business would cause.

I am just ready for season 6! Got hooked on this one pretty quick! Happy for Layla and Jordan. That wedding must happen! They are made for each other. Spencer and Olivia….meh…I like them both, but not so sure if I like them together. Spencer is very honest, great bring home to meet the parents material and Olivia is too into herself. I don’t know if I like her for Spencer, but I do like her. Coop is the bomb! Whatever happens, I just can’t wait!!!!

I want to see Spencer and Alicia back together. Because she really was more into Spencer and care for him than Olivia. I want to see Jordan and Simone back together because they was a beautiful couple that had history together. I wish Billy wouldn’t die off. I would love to see pop up appearances of Billy Baker through dreams of Laura, Jordan, Olivia, Spencer…and maybe even one from Grace (a little tension for D’Angelo).

I would love to see the finale fast forward to see where everyone ends up 10-15 years into the future: Spence & Liv, Jordan & Layla married with children; Ash & Jaymee…kids and realistic scenario with Jaymee’s Heath. JJ…so many directions we could send him. Laura, remarried and running her own law firm; Coop working for Laura (as an atty)…sort of still with Patience – BUT Patience is extremely busy as she’s become a mega star, on a world tour. And Dillion is living large in NYC, successfully working for a production company who produces cartoon films. Maybe Darnell can show up for all the Friends-Giving and family get togethers!!

We’ve had enough devastation for 5 seasons! Let the final season bring us joy…let us live vicariously through these AMAZING actors and actresses!!

I’m totally game with it all, but please no unpleasant surprises Wt Liv or Spencer, also patience must live 2 get justice & Put Dat Milo behind bars.

I would love to see a plot twist since they’ve never mentioned pulling Billy’s body from the ravine. That they discover he was barely alive. Found by someone. Not sure who he is maybe building a relationship with someone that helped him and somehow crosses paths with one of them and on and on lol….just think about bringing billy back before the end of the series!

With the trailer featuring shockingly few scenes of Spencer on the football field, the season is likely to spend more time with him at home, rather than in pads and a helmet. Patience's fate is also sure to be revealed, after last season seemingly left her on the edge of death, and the characters will continue to reckon with Billy Baker's demise. All American is always full of unexpected twists and turns, and season 6 is sure to continue that trend.

Chewy has taken a bold step into manufacturing its own brand of pet food with American Journey, and so far, it seems it has done a fantastic job. This move has allowed Chewy to make more affordable food than some of its competitors while still maintaining high-quality ingredients and excellent customer service.

All of American Journey’s food is grain-free and is manufactured in the United States. Meat is always the first ingredient; the food contains no artificial colors, flavors, or preservatives and has a great protein content throughout. While American Journey is not perfect, as it contains starchy binder ingredients, you won’t get much better for the price.

Overall, American Journey is an affordable, healthy, and trustworthy brand we highly recommend as a daily diet for your feline.

American Journey is a newer dog food brand, and it’s Chewy’s own line of food, similar to the Kirkland brand for Costco. For such a short time on the market, they have earned some very high ratings, even here in this American Journey dog food review.

They have many different recipes, and their dog food is generally catered to “all life stages” with dry dog food for senior dogs , kibbles for puppies, and formulas for dogs that need to lose weight .  They also have different formulas that are diet-specific, including a limited ingredient formula, which is slightly pricier.

American Journey is well thought of by most dog owners that use it, and it rivals some more expensive brands. Some of their recipes are grain-free, and other recipes are not, so you’ll have a wide variety to pick from. They also has several different flavors of wet dog foods , which can be great to add as a topper to dry food for your pup.  Let’s dig in!

Brand History & Recalls

While we weren’t able to find an actual date for when the brand started, we are fairly certain that it’s new. A quick trademark search of the USPTO.gov website shows that the trademark was filed in April of 2017 , and looking at the Chewy.com website, you can see that 2017 was when the first reviews started coming in about the food.  This tells us it’s been around for about 3 years now, making it a newer food brand when compared to some of the older brands .

We do know that American Journey’s food is produced in Kansas , and their Limited Ingredient Grain-Free formula is produced in California. We also know that they source from reputable suppliers both in the US and worldwide. It’s likely that depending on the scenario, some of the meat from their products could come from a different country.

Based on our research, we are unable to find any recall data for any of their foods . This means that since the brand has been established, they haven’t had a single recall, which is impressive for such a newer dog food brand. This is especially impressive for one that’s not as hard on your budget!

Food Ingredients

The biggest thing to note is that chewy does not use any by-product meat meal (used by some cheaper brands) and does not use any wheat, corn or soy. Some of their recipes are grain-free, which has come under investigation by the FDA in recent years, but the data on that study is still inconclusive. Based on the sheer amount of positive reviews and lack of recall data, most pups are fine to eat American Journey dog food without any issues whatsoever.

Once we pass the sniff test on meat, now we move onto what else the foods include. Their dog food recipes are also fortified with vitamins and minerals, as well as antioxidants that naturally occur in blueberries and other vegetables.

It also has a healthy dose of Omega-3 fatty acids and slow-burning carbohydrates in the grain content. The grains in most of their recipes are derived from brown rice or from sweet potatoes which is a primary ingredient in many of their formulas.  You can also find other fruits like blueberries and cranberries on the menu.

American Journey Dog Food Comparison

Below, we break down thier top foods based on food type, as well as the few foods that they produce specifically for your pup’s life stage .  Most of their food is “all life stages” with more of a one-size-fits-all approach, meaning you’ll manage your pup based on their weight and size rather than their age. Let’s take a look at each formula, starting from youngest in age, and ordered from most popular to least.

American Journey has three popular puppy formulas, that come in a few different flavors.  They offer two grain-free foods for puppies, as well as one that includes grain . The food that includes grain is cheaper than the grain-free, which is typical because it’s harder to produce.

All three formulas get equally great results, it just depends on how sensitive your dog’s stomach is. Their puppy formulas can be used to feed large breed puppies as well as some smaller breeds. There are no formulas specifically for toy breed puppies that need a smaller sized kibble to fit in their mouth. Toy breeds should consume smaller sized dry kibbles .

When considering a puppy formula, you’ll want to take into account the breed type, their expected size, and the quality of food they will eat. Puppyhood is an extremely crucial time for a dog’s development, so going the cheaper route for a dog food during puppyhood is something we don’t recommend .

American Journey’s foods have an excellent nutrient and antioxidant profile, which includes Omega 3’s and Omega 6 fatty acids. All 3 recipes above include fruits and vegetables to help provide additional nutrients and minerals.

The top ingredient in each formula is deboned fish or meat , so no by-product has been used in any of them.  The grain-free foods are gluten-free, whereas the brown rice & chicken formula is not. Most puppies will do fine on a gluten inclusive diet, but pups with sensitive stomachs will do better without it.

Adult Grain Inclusive

American Journey Grain-Free Adult Formula

The Adult formulas are for “all life stages” whether they have grain or they don’t.  These foods are meant for adult dogs and should be safe to feed your pup at around 1 year of age , carrying them all the way through their old age as seniors.

Some dogs can actually stay on an “all life stage” indefinitely, once they have transitioned over to that particular food.  While puppies can survive on an “all stage” food, we recommend that your pup start with food specifically meant for puppies, and transition over to an “all life stage” formula at 12 months.

American Journey’s with-grain formulas come in four different popular flavors. This food is cheaper than the grain-free recipes, and we’d recommend looking at these if your dog has no stomach problems or are on a budget.

There’s no problem feeding a grain-free food to a perfectly healthy dog, but some people can’t afford it, and some take issue with the FDA’s investigation into grain-free foods and would rather just avoid that discussion.

This grain-inclusive formula includes whole ingredients with the primary being meat and not a by-product. There are no fillers used in this food. These foods have an excellent amino acid profile , supply complex carbs to your dog, and have a nice antioxidant profile due to the fruits and veggies. The increase in fiber in this dog food should help ensure that your dog also stays regular.

Adult Grain-Free

The grain-free “All Life Stages” dog food is American Journey’s flagship. They offer multiple grain-free flavors that can do well with even the pickiest dogs . Each one of these will do well with your dog , no matter the size, breed or size of your pup. You control the food intake based on your dog’s activity levels.

We recommend grain-free formulas for all pups that have a sensitive stomach, or if your budget can afford it. And always make sure that when you switch to grain-free food , you’ve received the blessing from your vet. If your vet feels that your dog isn’t a good fit for that diet, they may provide you with other alternatives. Most dogs should do just fine on a grain-free food, however.

Since this is the most popular dog food in American Journey’s lineup, it should come as no surprise that not only do we see the same level of high-quality nutrients. Not only do we get an antioxidant boost , high-quality protein, and Omega 3/6 fatty acids, but we also have a DHA boost which helps support brain and vision development in your dog.

American Journey’s grain-free adult formula is one of our favorites. It holds up well compared to other brands. This includes even some premium brands like Taste of the Wild .

Limited Ingredient Formulas

American Journey Limited Ingredient Formula

Limited ingredient formulas are becoming more and more popular as people start to move away from artificial flavors and ingredients. The idea behind this is that the fewer ingredients a food has , the purer it is. This idea permeates a lot for humans as well, the smaller the label it is, the better it is for you. So it makes sense that the same logic would apply for your dog.

The only issue with limited ingredient dog food is that it costs more to produce. Because of that, the cost is then passed on to you, the consumer. American Journey has some fantastic limited ingredient formulas. The price gap between their limited ingredient foods is actually much closer than other brands.

It’s only about a 10% difference in price for you to take the plunge into limited ingredient foods for your pup. Because some of the ingredients are similar to their other foods, your pup may transition relatively well to a limited ingredient formula instead of suffering the usual 2-3 week stomach impacts of changing foods.

Senior Formulas

American Journey Senior Formula

American Journey does have three senior formulas. Their selection includes two grain-free senior recipes and one with grain formula. The grain-free salmon and sweet potato is going to be the priciest of the lot, with the grain inclusive chicken and brown rice being the cheapest of the three.

All of them are highly rated by dog owners that have used them and will make a great option for your senior dog. American Journey isn’t as well known as other brands , however when it comes to Senior recipes.

Migrating to a senior formula can be tougher, just due to the fact that as your pup ages, they will need nutrients that support their bones and joints. Usually, you are looking for a dog food that increases levels of glucosamine in addition to fortifying it with additional vitamins and minerals .

All three of these foods do that, making each of them an excellent choice to help preserve the health of your dog.  While there are plenty of other senior formula dog foods out there, and they do a solid job of competing in a tougher category with bigger brands like Nutro .

Weight Loss Formulas

American Journey Healthy Weight Formula

American Journey’s healthy weight dog food is not only reasonable price-wise, but it’s widely used and makes a great formula for pups that need to lose some weight.  This formula is grain inclusive , so you’ll need to consider that if you own a dog that has an extremely sensitive stomach.  There are other weight loss dog food options out there if your pup needs to stick to a grain-free diet while trying to shed a few pounds.

This food isn’t broken down by breed like we see Science Diet do , so you’ll need to monitor and regulate your dog’s food intake based on their size and the recommended foods on the chart .  You should likely be monitoring your dog’s food intake closely anyhow if they are regularly overeating and gaining weight.

American Journey Wet Dog Food

Didn’t think we’d only be looking at dry kibbles did you? Let’s take a look at a few of American Journey’s high-quality wet foods as well.  These make for a great topper on regular dry kibble. We never advocate your dog eating wet food as their only source of nutrients for many reasons.

Specifically, it’s very poor for dental health to only have one soft food. Dry kibbles help to keep your dog’s teeth clean, so it’s almost essential that your pup has that in their diet if you aren’t feeding raw, where they have access to bones and other raw ingredients to keep teeth clean.

Wet food can make a great sidekick though, and American Journey’s formulas do very well when comparing them to other wet dog foods. Like their dry kibbles, their wet food formula hasn’t had any recalls that we can see. Mixing up a half a can of wet dog food on your pup’s dry kibble is a great idea that will make mealtime a lot more interesting for your pup.

The American Journey poultry and beef variety pack is the highest rated, and the first ingredient like their dry kibble is always meat.  These meals are also crafted in the USA and only packed in BPA free cans.  They have an excellent amino acid profile to help support any dry kibble you feed your pup. It also contains no corn, wheat, or soy to prevent your dog from food sensitivities.

Final Thoughts

As you’ve found in this American Journey review, it’s a budget-friendly option for people that would rather order online without making their way to the grocery store to lug home 24-pound bags of dog food. It’s also a brand that most dogs will enjoy, without many stomach issues.

All of their food options are quality, with some standing out slightly more than others. While there are plenty of other options on the market to feed your dog, we highly recommend American Journey due to cost, quality, convenience and nutrient profile.

Was looking for a more cost-effective limited ingredient, high quality dog food for our dynamic duo to change from Canidae. Much research and investigating, came across non-store offered American Journey by Chewy, about to receive second bag and no issues switching since limited to limited / same protein but saving the pickup and slimmed down the cost makes for a happy mama. More spoiling them elsewhere is a happy feeling! Highly recommend.

Just started feeding the limited ingredient Salmon and sweet potato to my 14 mo old Goldendoodle. He’s had some stomach issues and has gotten picky in flavor of foods. He devoured his first bowl! Hoping for great results with this good. Handy to have delivered… I’m disabled and carting bags is difficult.

Sometimes you find yourself on a road that you can sense is something truly special.

It is not just the landscapes, though you can't take your eyes off them. It is something about the byway itself, though it's not just the quality of its surface.

It seems to have a history. There's something in the engineering — the vertiginous "Hogsback" stretch comes to mind — and in the thoughtful lay of the road.

The way the road connects with the land, feels somehow a part of the landscape, embedded in the slickrock, even though it was once an intrusion into the space. Like the way a lightning strike can ignite a fire in a forest and sweep out gnarly, dense undergrowth competing for sunlight, there is a period of adaptation and recovery. It virtually becomes part of the ecosystem. Utah state Route 12 is such a road.

An All-American Road

This is 122.863 miles (to be exact) of pure driving bliss. Welcome to Utah’s Scenic Byway 12, also known as “A Journey Through Time Scenic Byway.” What’s more, this stretch of pavement is also designated an All-American Road. Only one-third of America’s scenic byways get this distinction, and it’s given because these roads offer  unique features that you can’t find elsewhere  making these byways tourist destinations unto themselves.

The All-American Road: Scenic Byway 12 connects U.S. 89 near Panguitch on the west with S.R. 24 near Torrey on the northeast. It is not the quickest route between these two points, but it far and away the best. Hitting the road, travelers often have a destination in mind. That destination quickly takes a backseat to the journey as they climb into the Dixie National Forest from Torrey.

A stop at the scenic overlook near the road’s summit at about 9,000 feet puts it all into perspective. Atmosphere envelopes distant lands, the Henry Mountains, Grand Staircase-Escalante and the shimmering red rock of Capitol Reef National Park . Contrasting stands of subalpine fir and aspen decorate the immediate surroundings.

Here, likeminded travelers, warriors of the road of all backgrounds come together: RV, motorcycle, convertible, classic roadster, sedan. This is auto and motorcycle tourism at its best, where everyone coexists in complete harmony, out of respect for the byway.

Exploring Scenic Byway 12

This is one pretty epic road. Sure, the whole drive can be completed in three hours if you're just passing through. But even a four-day itinerary would just scratch the surface thanks to the byway's proximity to multiple state parks (Kodachrome Basin, Escalante Petrified Forest, Anasazi State Park Museum), national parks ( Bryce Canyon  and Capitol Reef), scenic backways for  well-prepared travelers  ( Cottonwood Canyon ,  Hole-in-the-Rock ,  Burr Trail ,  Hell's Backbone ) and virtually endless outdoor recreation options on the expansive Dixie National Forest.

For now. Let's focus on the road ahead: Hit the pedal straight through to the various geological oddities along the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument or check out the many other stops along the way. Scenic Byway 12 begins to the west in Panguitch and ends in Torrey to the northeast. It connects Bryce Canyon and Capitol Reef national parks, and, of course, brings visitors to a number of other amazing destinations along the way.

What You’ll Remember

As you proceed east from Panguitch, you’ll enjoy driving through the two red arches in Red Canyon. Then, you’ll be in awe as you lay witness to the actual “stairs” in the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument just past Henrieville — a different color of sandstone to the north and to the south. Along the “Hogsback” between Escalante and Boulder, hairpin turns dare you on a road that drops off drastically from the shoulders down into deep canyons below. You’ll yet again change geography as you traverse through the aspen and pine groves, and meadowlands of Boulder Mountain before finally heading back to the desert near Capitol Reef. Don’t worry, there are plenty of pull-offs and scenic overlooks so you don’t have to take pictures while driving (not recommended).

In short, fans of scenic driving, motorcycle touring, epic bike rides and people with eyes with love this journey. It's even better if loved ones don’t mind you saying “wow” a thousand times over the course of the 122-mile drive.

What Makes it Great

The sheer diversity of geography is incredible and unique to Utah and the United States. Scenic Byway 12 affords access to a number of national parks, state parks, national monuments, scenic overlooks, and plenty of great restaurants and shops. You can enjoy the highway over the course of your vacation as you make stops along the way, or you can drive the entire expanse in one 65 m.p.h. whirlwind of beauty in a day.

GPS Coordinates and Driving Conditions

Utah’s Scenic Byway 12 begins in Panguitch ( 37.749625, -112.376541 ) in the west and ends in Torrey ( 38.298762, -111.402073 ) to the northeast. It can be enjoyed by driving either east or west — or both, multiple times. The road is open year-round, but after major winter storms, sections might be impassible until plowed, and ice can make some sections white-knucklers especially on the Boulder Mountain stretch during the winter . There are no fees to drive on Scenic Byway 12, although some destinations and attractions along the way — off of the highway — have an entrance fee. Feel free to bring a dog, but most areas and trails along the highway require the pup to be on leash.

I remember the day quite clearly. It was a fresh spring day in 1979 and I was helping my mother out of her London home that had been our house for a generation. I was there to help, to savor the old house one last time and to wave goodbye to the site of my childhood. Reaching up into the distant recesses of a large, dark closet, I found a tattered, plastic bag bulging with papers. As soon as I examined the contents of the bag I knew I had made an important discovery. The real significance of the find, however, eluded me for some time. I had not found an exotic gem or forgotten heirloom but I had recovered something far more valuable. It was my first grade workbook. We stopped, my mother and I, to joyfully experience my first attempts to communicate with the written word.

I have always enjoyed writing. I enjoy the demands it makes on right-brained creativity and what it asks from left-brained technique. While such a whole brain synthesis is necessary for the effective performance of most activities, few depend as completely as writing does on this marriage between creativity and technique, emotion and logic, the abstract and the rules. In the sense that it exercises the brain in this way, writing like other artistic endeavors, does for the mind what aerobics does for the body.

I was in touch with the sheer joy of creative expression long before I appreciated technique. It was only after publishing thirty or more scientific articles and chapters, co-authoring a book and becoming an editor for an academic psychological journal, that I increased my awareness of technique. It is, however, the absolute high that I get each time I express an idea in an original way that makes me want to write. The sheer exhilaration of giving birth to a unique arrangement of concepts is always there no matter how protracted the labor may have been. Neither is my excitement ever dimmed by the omnipresent possibility that today's hilarious, evocative, beautiful brainchild tomorrow will seem boring, dull and plain.

My creative expression has always been intimately connected to a mischievous desire to shun convention and present the world from a different perspective. Unfortunately, scientific writing does not readily lend itself to this approach. The first time my name appeared in print was as co-author of an obscure statistics paper entitled, 'The Concordance Coefficient: A correction for the inequality of interval in underlying rhos.' There were three other authors and at least two of them understood the contents of the paper.

Eventually, however, I managed to find creative expression in a scientific journal. On the way to work one morning I composed a paper in limerick form about an obsessional who could only express herself in rhyme. The editor of a prestigious psychological journal published it and for months I received limericks from around the globe; coarse ones from Australia, old ones from South America and even a humorless one from behind the lron

The limerick served me well. At conferences, meetings and workshops, psychologists would identify me as the "guy who wrote that limerick." I also used the poem to establish contact with the editor of the European version of Psychology Today and for two years thereafter, I wrote a monthly column and regular features for that periodical.

I soon realized, however, that scientific papers weren't places for jokes. I found that I could write academic articles with creative flair and color without resorting to flippancy. I discovered that, to be used effectively especially in scientific presentations, humor needs to be employed sparingly and held back for the right moment. I learned to write for my market, my audience, my point.

With all the emphasis on creativity, my technique left a lot to be desired. I used to horribly split infinitives. Amazingly, no editor tried to seriously question or to effectively challenge this tendency. I also had a problem with prepositions . I never knew which end of the sentence to put them at. When I found out which end of the sentence to put them I was not sure what they referred to at. The darned things used to collect at the end of my sentences like balls in the corner pocket of a tilted pool table. Fortunately, this is a problem I no longer have to worry about.

Writing, however, is more than the sum of its creative and technical parts. Writing is not just a way of organizing thoughts, writing provides access to the unconscious. Writing is the transport to the very core of personality. It is a mirror that reflects the soul.

That was the remarkable discovery I made from my first grade workbook. As I read through my very first piece of written work, my characteristic style jumped off the page at me. There was the unconventional, there was the humorous, there was the mischievous. Until that point I thought that I had painstakingly crafted my individual style over the years. Reading that first workbook, however, I realized that the style was not fashioned by me but was, in fact, part of me, a reflection of my identity and present at six years of age.

As I progressed through middle school I determined that I wanted to be a writer but in those days there didn't seem many prospects for that career. So, I ended up in psychology and spent over three decades working as a researcher, academic, teacher, therapist, educator, and speaker. I was even an early adopter of brain assessment and training and conducted one of the first studies using the QEEG for assessment in the U.S. Public school system. I was a consultant to the BBC, WHO, NIAAA, Blue Cross NC and others. I appeared on all the major networks including CNN, 'The View" and ABC's '20/20' and in many major publications like the Wall St Journal, L.A. Times, Prevention, etc.

Now I have returned to my first passion. I write in four major niches: neuroscience, coaching/self-help/psychology, business and inspirational memoirs. I have several great books coming out in the next few months as a writer, co-writer and ghostwriter. One of these is on Avoiding Alzheimer's, another an amazing spiritual journey of a woman in a coma and another is about a child of war and her courage, resilience and grace. Two more inspirational books are about a blind Australian boy who became a world champion athlete and a poor Nigerian girl who was enthralled when she saw a plane fly over her village for the first time when she was eight years old and vowed to learn to be a pilot. She went one better -- she is an aerospace engineer!

I realized that spring day in 1979 that because writing is a reflection of identity, a collection of personal written works is a map that charts the contours of an unfolding life-script. Each piece I write is not just a record of my interests and thoughts, but a buoy marking my progress on the voyage through life.

Shaq Gets Emotional Watching Daughter Me'Arah O'Neal Play in McDonald's All-American Game

Shaquille O'Neal enjoyed a special moment on the TNT broadcast Tuesday night.

Before a tilt between the Philadelphia 76ers and Oklahoma City Thunder, the TNT crew featuring broadcaster Adam Lefkoe, former NBA player Jamal Crawford and WNBA star Candace Parker broke down film from the 2024 McDonald's All-American Girls Game on Tuesday.

O'Neal's youngest daughter, Me'Arah O'Neal, was selected to play in the annual basketball showcase . Just like her dad in 1989.

O'Neal then got emotional as he discussed his daughter's growth on the court. Me'Arah O'Neal scored 12 points and grabbed six rebounds in the contest.

"I'm proud of her," O'Neal said. "I'm proud of all my children."

O'Neal then thanked Parker for paving the way for his daughter in the growing game of women's basketball.

"Watching him watch her in the back, doing work—there's nothing like watching your kids play," Parker said. "It shows in his eyes."

"You're going to make me cry, Candace. Go to break," O'Neal jokingly said to the production truck.

What a special moment.

Tennessee all-American Dalton Knecht took the long road to these lofty heights

DETROIT — In a road-trip country webbed with dream-filled interstates, the roads teem with stories even if nobody knows them as they roll along. It seems that last summer a story made its way the 18½ hours from the middle of Colorado to the eastern chunk of Tennessee. The story apparently made a stop in Indiana along the way.

In the Acura rode a father who had played basketball at Mayville State in Mayville, N.D., the kind of admirable dedication that doesn’t suggest a slew of frills, and a 6-foot-6 son. Had they told anyone along their trudge of a trek where the son would turn up on the last Saturday in March 2024, the listeners might have presumed them bananas.

That son, Dalton Knecht, that transfer from less-televised Northern Colorado to more-televised Tennessee, would sit in an interview room at the Elite Eight as one of two first-team all-Americans in Sunday’s Purdue-Tennessee Midwest Region final clash (the other being Purdue tower Zach Edey). He would field questions as one of the mere four Naismith player of the year finalists and as a presence in the country’s roughly 1 billion NBA mock drafts (often in the teens), and he would supply solicited advice on how to withstand long road trips with parents.

“I just put my headphones in,” he said, “and just didn’t listen to my dad at all.”

Rewarded with a guffaw or two from that, he said, “On my phone, or blocking him out.”

And so, “Just acting like he’s not in there.”

What an ascent of a journey they have taken, Knecht and his family, one so dizzying for followers of college basketball that it’s easy to understand how Rick Barnes felt the need to say what he said Saturday. Barnes, the young and beloved 69-year-old coach with six seasons at Providence, four at Clemson, 17 at Texas and nine at Tennessee, said of Knecht and Edey, “Those guys, they deserved every honor that they’ve gotten, but both of them would tell you that they would defer to their teammates for helping them get what they’ve gotten done.”

That’s true especially if one considers Tennessee’s defense, the kind of presence that can make an opponent want to run screaming out of the gym. That includes the great defender point guard Zakai Zeigler, and the excellent defender Jahmai Mashack, who gave the assessment that what “separates us as a team” is not so much the pressure but the sustenance of that pressure: “To sustain that for as long as we do, it wears on teams. That wears on teams, trust me.”

It’s just that as that defense stoked an 18-0 run Friday night that sling-shotted Tennessee ahead of Creighton in the Sweet 16, Knecht was getting 26 splashy points on 8-for-21 shooting, including 3-for-7 three-point shooting, along with six rebounds and five assists. That followed 18 points and nine rebounds against Texas in the second round and 23 points and eight rebounds against Saint Peter’s in the first. All of that has inched upward Knecht’s scoring average, which stands at 21.2 and 14th in the country (with the 7-foot-4 Edey at No. 1 at 24.6), boosted by eye-catching scoring binges in several games. More so, he was adding that extra component to a program that had already graced the Sweet 16 in 2019 and 2023, and the tournament all the years bunched around that since 2018, even as it seeks its first Final Four berth.

Wider than that, he epitomizes a bit of a trickle of a trend: players who come from the side roads or the back roads to real prominence at the top tier. Three of the 10 men on the all-American first and second teams did that in some form: Knecht (from Northern Colorado), Tristen Newton of Connecticut (from East Carolina after getting no offers early on) and Mark Sears of Alabama (from Ohio, which is smaller of budget but not of aspiration, with a Sweet 16 berth in 2012 and second-round advances in 2010 and 2021). DJ Burns, the fresh sensation of Elite Eight entry North Carolina State, stopped by Tennessee way back when, then honed his near-unguardable craft at Winthrop.

It has shone welcome light on the quality present at those tiers.

“I mean, if you’re a good basketball player, you’re a good basketball player, no matter if you’re playing D3, D2 or at a small mid-major school around the country,” said Josiah-Jordan James, a 6-foot-7 guard and fifth-season sage on the Tennessee team. “Like, the hard work is always going to show, and I give credit to Dalton and J.G. [Jordan Gainey] and transfer guys who came from smaller schools,” with Gainey having reached Tennessee from USC Upstate in South Carolina. “Their work ethic is second to none.”

He spoke of these transfer portal days and said: “It’s just about finding the right guys and having the right fit. Fit is really big, because you can be a really talented player and not get an opportunity, and have to go somewhere else for another opportunity.”

Knecht spoke some old truths applicable to pre-portal days when he said Saturday: “I think it just shows that you don’t have to be the number one kid in your class or the top 10 kid in your class, that you can go to a juco, or you can go to a mid-major, [then] go to one of the best schools in the nation and be one of the best players on that team. So I think no matter what, you’ve just got to stay believing in yourself, and have that belief, and also, just, hard work pays off.”

He began fielding calls from coaches last spring, gathering particular inspiration from Tennessee assistant Rod Clark. Clark, a 31-year-old with a ton of coaching talent who played at Neosho Community College in Kansas, Redlands Community College in Oklahoma and NAIA Lindsey Wilson College in Kentucky, knew also about Northeastern Junior College in Colorado, which is where Knecht started out. Clark had two relatives who played there, Knecht said, and the two young men spoke fluently the juco dialect. Eleven months, 250 field goals (in 546 attempts), 87 three-pointers (in 222 attempts) and 173 rebounds (4.9 per game) later, the roads have led into the mountains, both literally and figuratively.

That’s even as Knecht plans to avoid those roads from now on.

“Never doing that again,” he said of the road trip. “Eighteen-and-a-half hours is not it.”
