BANKS (born 15 June 1988) aka Jillian Rose Banks is an up and coming R&B singer-songwriter hailing from California, US.

Music has often been used as a form of therapy and release, something Banks is more than an advocate for. At the age of 15 she was presented with keyboard as her parents were in the middle of divorce. Teaching herself to play she would find herself locked away in her room writing and recording tracks onto a Dictaphone inspired by artists like Tracey Chapman, Lauryn Hill and Fiona Apple. The result would be very raw and gritty personal lyrics which were very telling of her mind set and feelings.

Going to university, Banks embarked on a degree in Psychology instead of pursuing a career in music. With terrible stage fright she would occasionally perform at open mic nights with her back to the audience, encouraged by her friend Lily Collins (son of Phil). During her studies Lily sent some of Banks’ demos to Katy Perry’s tour DJ Yung Skeeter who was incredibly impressed by her talent that he offered to manage her which would lead to her signing with the label Good Years Recording in 2013.

Her first official single “Before I Ever Met You” streamed on Soundcloud racking up over 218,000 plays and it wasn’t long before it caught the attention of Radio 1 DJ Zane Lowe and released in February 2013. The following month her debut EP “Fall Over” hit the interweb as a digital release and soon the buzz surrounded this exciting new talent. Banks became hotly tipped by many music publications as an act to watch out for in 2014 featuring in BBC, MTV and Spotify polls.

Joining The Weeknd on a support slot for his US and UK tour in the autumn of 2013 saw Banks garner unprecedented popularity as audiences fell in love with her intimate, revealing and vulnerable lyrics coupled with her incredibly soulful and distinctive vocals.

Banks’ debut album “Goddess” released on 5 September 2014 landed respectably in the top 20 album charts in seven countries as it received critical acclaim, filled with dark and gloomy synths and enchanting qualities.

Most artists revel social media, but Banks shies away from it and instead maintains a very intimate relationship with her fans by posting her personal mobile number giving her fans access to the person beneath the artist.

Live reviews

I've seen quite a few acts during their debuts on the music scene and then later on when they've matured into their crafts. None excite me more than Banks. For her first UK tour and a small venue, she had the whole place encapsulated. Birmingham crowds can be tough nuts to crack but she was onto a winner with a flawless vocal performance, superb crowd interactions and a well traversed set list of songs. Quite simply she left the audience wanting more and without even a debut album to back up this concert, I can’t wait to see what the future brings.

Banks’ music is a mix of current electronic beats with impressive lyrics and vocals swerving around serene harmonies. Banks debuted the track 'Goddess' which was as well received as existing material taken from her London EP. Banks, first name Jillian, performs with vivacity and appreciates music to its core and you will gleam that from her performances. I’ve never known an artist publish their personal number on their Facebook page before, this is a testament for her obvious desire to perform for her fans. An exciting act and definitely one to check out in the future, hopefully she will come back from LA to perform in England again soon.

I won tickets to Banks, never having listened to her before. I had had friends tell me about her, but I had never gotten around to actually listening to her debut album, Goddess. Before the show started, a security guard near us was talking about how she demanded professional pictures only be taken on her left side and that she would walk off stage if they photographed from her right. Honestly, after hearing that, I expected her to come off as somewhat of a diva on stage and not interact much with the crowd. However, by the second song, I had forgotten about that completely. She looked like a porcelain doll as she swayed on stage, and looked a bit nervous at the beginning. However, she warmed up pretty quickly and her personality really came through when she performed. She was graceful, elegant, sweet, and I actually thought she was lip-syncing at one point by the perfection of her voice. (She wasn't) Overall, the concert was amazing and I am definitely a fan now. She did a great job of interacting with the crowd and her overall performance was one of the best.

This was my third time seeing BANKS in LA in 2014, and it was honestly amazing! She was really sentimental since LA is her hometown and it was the GODDESS tour. She played every single song with her soul. And when she played "Goddess," this amazing energy flew around the Wiltern. She also played "Fall Over" demonstrating her piano skills. She loves to interact with the crowd all the way in the front. And she would tell the crowd to sing along and dance as well. She finished with "Stick" which made everyone dance. I love you BANKS, you're the best.

Such an amazing show!! The openers were so good! Lemon and Kevin Garrett really killed it! And Banks.... Ugh let me tell you, it was so good that I literally levitated. Ascended in another dimension. Exorcism after exorcism, girl it was beautiful. I cried, yelled, laughed... I’m just so glad that I was able to witness an incredible artist perform its art and be apart of this experience. PERIODT.

BANKS fulfilled my very high expectations, sang beautifully, awesome stage presence, great sound and lots of (borderline saccharine) love for London and her audience. Highlights were a rendition of Fall Over in a very different style to the album and finishing the main part of the show with a huge rendition of Begging For Thread. Remember to stick around for the encore.

Venue sucked, paid extra for early entrance and got in at regular door opening time, super disorganized. Drunk bartenders. No bueno.

Actual show was great. She was awesome. Opener was awesome. Lighting and sound was very good. Banks was on fire and her set was perfectly chosen with the song mix. I had such a good time, loved the dancers too!

BANKS made the whole experience memorable, the overall performance was phenomenal it will probably stay embedded in my brain for the rest of my life! I loved the whole show! I heard and saw the passion she was expressing which is what I love! I will definitely be seeing her again no doubt! Thank you again for the great performance!

I've been lucky enough to see Banks every time she has played in London.

It has been a priviledge to see her grow as a performer and artist.

First time she seemed shy and a little fragile, last night she was a goddess totally sure of her art and talent and in total command of HER stage.

A wonderful night, thank you.

BANKS was great live. I loved the energy. Everyone singing along and truly enjoying their time. Luckly I was surrounded by some very nice individuals. Her opening band "the Movement" was a such a great choice. Overall it was a very enjoyable show. Recommend for anyone who loves BANKS as much as I do.

I love Banks. Obsessed rather. I've been to 4 of her shows already. And 2 were in a row! She does a great performance each time but tonight seemed a bit lacking. I'm not sure if she was sick but it felt like she didn't give it her all this time. Still I love her music with all my heart.

About BANKS

BANKS is an American singer, songwriter, producer, poet, and director. Since her spellbinding debut in 2014, BANKS has garnered more than 1.4 billion combined streams and headlined sold out shows and festivals all over the world. Her debut album  Goddess  received critical acclaim and commercial success (the record charted in the top 20 in seven countries including North America), and firmly established her sonic signatures: alternative pop inflected with touches of the off-kilter R&B she grew up with. BANKS returned in 2016 with  The Altar,  a darker and more intense refraction of the themes she explored on  Goddess,  also released to widespread praise and multiple top 20 placings in both the U.S. and abroad. Then, for her third album in 2019, she unveiled the exhilarating, synth-heavy lead single “Gimme,” produced by Hudson Mohawke, as the lead single for the aptly titled  III,  marking yet another step in her progression as an artist with its more experimental production flourishes and more mature lyrical themes. Following the success of  III,  she embarked on her biggest tour yet in support of the record, spanning 33 sold-out dates in nine countries. A muse for fashion houses such as Chanel and Dior, she has graced front-row seats at fashion shows and the covers of multiple high-end publications around the world. She has performed at many of the world’s biggest festivals (Coachella, Lollapalooza), at the prestigious Guggenheim in NYC, as well as on multiple late night television shows over the years (Colbert, Kimmel, Meyers).

Banks Slithers into the Driver’s Seat of Her Destiny as She Announces LP ‘Serpentina’

By Tomás Mier

“You know when you have cheerleaders that just want what’s good for you?” asks Banks . “This is what’s good for me.”

It took a pandemic lockdown filled with “isolation in the best way possible” for Banks to shed her old skin and learn to live life in the present moment. It was in that process, where the singer finally took full control of her music and artistry, that she created Serpentina. T he singer’s upcoming album arrives April 8 and it’s available for preorder.

“I feel like nothing can touch me,” Banks tells Rolling Stone . “Like a serpent queen, once you shed your skin you have to keep moving and just be present in the new skin you’re in.” She adds, “That’s what happened to me.” Banks refers to the months-long isolation where she shut the blinds and closed the doors to the business side of music and focused instead on writing lyrics, co-producing, and “falling in love” again with the entire song-building process. Instead of sending music to her management for approval and advice as she normally would, this time, “I was just like, ‘This is what it’s gonna be,’ ” she says.

After “breaking through” some of the demons that she had to face during the pandemic, she says she found a new strength in herself and her artistry she had never felt before. “I’ve had times in my life where I’ve been less sure of myself,” she says. “I found this new confidence in my own creativity, in my gut intuition, and in my own opinions.”

On Thursday at midnight, the singer released the album’s third single “Holding Back,” which she says brings an “energy that is so big it could take up the whole room.” With the negativity of the pandemic, she was ready to uplift people with her music, serving a twist to her often-dark tracks on LPs Goddess and The Altar . She says the new song “makes me feel ready to conquer the world.” The new track follows LP singles “ Skinnydipped ” and “ The Devil, ” which dropped last year.

Banks describes Serpentina as holding both an airy brightness new to her sound, but also a heavy “beast underneath it.”

“I’ve always been really inspired by gospel melodies and that soul: that feeling like there’s something bigger than you,” she says. “The music is coming from that place.“ She points to the beautifully haunting album opener “Misunderstood” and vocally-driven “Spirit” as examples of that almost-religious dichotomy. “It’s so vulnerable in a self-accepting, empowered way,” she adds. “My vocals ride more on top of everything than ever before. I want people to feel like they’re sitting right next to me when they hear it — whether it’s a banger or a ballad.”

What’s also different for Banks this time is that she now owns the masters to her music, something she had never experienced before. “That’s been a really incredible feeling,” she says about her new deal with AWAL. “I’m in charge of my own career and every decision.” She adds, “I relied on other people less than I ever have on this album.”

Roman Wellington Banks Turned Down ‘MJ: The Musical’ to Star in ‘HSMTMTS’ — Now He’s Leading the Tour (Exclusive)

The 'High School Musical: The Musical: The Series' and 'Dear Evan Hansen' alum talks with PEOPLE about playing the 'larger-than-life' role of Michael Jackson

banks musician tour

Matthew Murphy

When it comes to Roman Wellington Banks ’ role in MJ: The Musical , timing was everything.

On June 6, it was announced that the actor, 24, would be playing the leading role of Michael Jackson in the production’s first national tour, which kicks off in Chicago on Aug. 1.

Speaking with PEOPLE exclusively, Banks reveals that his role in the musical has actually been a long time coming, as he originally auditioned for the 2021 Broadway production, which was led by Myles Frost and won four Tony Awards.

“I had auditioned for the role of Middle Michael, which is the out of Jackson 5 into ‘Off the Wall’ era of Michael Jackson,” he says. “That would have been my dream come true. I would've been able to originate a role and that would've been so exciting.”

Though he says he did get offered the job, he recalls turning it down to star in High School Musical: The Musical: The Series , in which he played Howie in season 2 .

Disney+

“ High School Musical was also such a new opportunity for me. I'd never done TV, and I really wanted to take advantage of that and especially to do a show that I did actually truly like,” he says about doing HSMTMTS . “So it felt good and my agents at the time thought that was a wonderful choice and I agreed with them.”

As fate would have it though, years later he got a second chance to audition for the musical — this time as the lead.

“I never saw that for myself necessarily,” Banks admits about playing the main Michael Jackson. Since the casting directors were already familiar with him, he quickly moved through the audition process to a boot camp with four other actors, which he says, “was the hardest audition process I've ever had to endure.”

After a grueling audition process, including physically demanding dance numbers, Banks fittingly found out he got role on Halloween. Though, he admits that the news is still taking time to sink in.

”Once I finally allowed myself space to celebrate, which took a long, long time because it didn't really feel like anything was actually happening for a really long time, it was really gratifying,” he says. “And it continues to hit me. I think that first show will bring that journey to a close and I can finally truly accept this present time in my career and my life.”

Though this is his first national tour, it’s certainly not his first theater production. Serving as an understudy in Broadway’s Dear Evan Hansen from 2018 to 2020, Banks previously made history as the first Black actor to play Evan Hansen. In 2021, Jordan Fisher made history as the first Black actor to star as Evan Hansen full-time.

After having that experience, Banks says it’s been “healing” stepping into the role of a Black icon like Jackson. “To come into this experience as a Black man, specifically after making history in a show that was so predominantly white, it's been really healing,” he says. “I have a predominantly Black cast [but] there's also Black members of the creative team and the music team and even our crew. My dresser's Black, which I haven't experienced before. It's really made coming to work such a safe space. I don't ever feel like I have to put anything on to come to work or code-switch. I show up as Roman, I leave as Roman, I perform as Roman.”

Never miss a story — sign up for PEOPLE's free daily newsletter to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from juicy celebrity news to compelling human interest stories.

That being said, he adds that Dear Evan Hansen helped in unexpected ways as he prepared for MJ: The Musical . “[It] gave me the yearning to find out the emotional truths of Michael, to really dive into his brain during 1992, and where his heart was at and what his anxieties were and where his confidence lies,” he says. “The great thing about Dear Evan Hansen and Evan specifically is that it calls you to look inside yourself and between you and this character who might be very close to who you are naturally, or in my case, a bit further, in terms of physical manifestation.”

Specifically, playing Evan Hansen made Banks “want to tell the story of [Michael Jackson’s] heart .” “We know his singing, we know his songs and dance so well, but we don't really know the human,” he says. “I just hope that people recognize, not only the work that I put into it, but also the connection that I'm trying to show to Michael's heart. I really want you to look at Michael in a human lens and not a godlike lens but as a man who had emotions and feelings and really at the end of the day, just yearned to be able to live his life as a regular human being.”

“It's been really amazing to take someone who feels like such a unicorn and a myth and a larger-than-life figure and almost feel like they're a friend of mine,” he adds of playing Jackson. “I never thought in my wildest dreams that I would ever portray my musical hero and in such an in-depth way. So it's really allowed me to look past all the tabloids I grew up with and all the rumors that I grew up with about him, and to really find out who he is through my own eyes and research, at least up to 1992, until the point of my portrayal."

The show takes audiences inside Jackson's creative process, depicting the singer rehearsing for his 1992 Dangerous world tour. It features over 25 of the singer's biggest hits.

Jackson went from child star to chart-topping King of Pop, with hits like "Beat It" and "Billie Jean." Jackson was arrested on charges of child molestation back in 2003, though he was acquitted of those charges in 2005. The singer was  accused of sexual abuse  by two people after his death in 2013 at age 50. A 2019 documentary revisited the allegations.

Courtesy of MJ

As for what he’s looking most forward to about opening night, Banks says the moment will be all about his family, especially his mom who grew up listening to Jackson’s music. “I think about what it must feel like to grow up with an artist that you love that you introduced to your children, and then one day one of your children is going to embody that artist for you,” he says. “I can only imagine the emotional journey she's going to take. And it makes me emotional thinking about it. I dedicate the show to them because, without them, I wouldn't be here.”

“I think this is the first time they're really able to watch a process and be excited about it for me because they know so much about Michael Jackson and they can connect to this story,” he says. “They saw Dear Evan Hansen and they [were] like, ‘Cool,’ which I loved but I think when they can really understand the gravity and the weight behind something I'm involved in, they can really get excited about it. They're already so over the moon for this, so I can only imagine what they'll experience when I step on that stage on opening night.”

Tickets for the national tour of MJ: The Musical are on sale now through Sept. 8, 2024.

Canadian Swifties launch food bank fundraiser ahead of Toronto, Vancouver Eras Tour shows

taylor-swift-eras-tour-rehearsal-2023-facebook

As the final countdown to Taylor Swift arriving in Canada to take the stage for six nights in Toronto and three in Vancouver as part of her nearly two-year Eras Tour, Swifties around the nation are looking for ways to celebrate the singer and do some good in her honour.

While plans are afoot in both cities for concert-goers to express gratitude through several "fan project" initiatives during the shows (particularly the closing night of the entire tour, set to happen in Vancouver on Sunday, December 8) others are in search of more immediate ways to help out fellow Canadians.

The "Tay It Forward" project started as one fan's idea to unite fans and raise funds for Food Banks Canada.

Swift makes significant donations to food banks in every city where she performs. Since March 2023, when the Eras Tour began in Glendale, Arizona, Swift has donated the equivalent of hundreds of thousands of meals to help feed the growing number of Americans grappling with rising food and housing costs. She chooses to give without celebrity fanfare, and the gifts have been welcomed.

Swift’s support has been meaningful, food bank operators say, especially in drawing attention to their crucial service for low- and mid-income people. Some food bank operators in the U.S. remarked that they experienced a bump in donations overall after media coverage of Swift's generosity, though the star and her team don't comment about the donations.

Tay It Forward Canada inspired by Swift's giving

Inspired by Swift's generosity, fans in Canada have banded together for "Tay It Forward," which aims to raise $1.3 million for Food Banks Canada.

The Canada-wide project is about "thanking Taylor Swift for coming to Canada and celebrating the conclusion of the indescribable impact of the Eras Tour," describes the project's website.

"We are following Taylor’s lead and giving back (#iTSgiving13) by choosing Food Banks Canada to help us in this mission as we fight food insecurity in Canada together!"

Organizers are asking that any Swift fan donate just $13 (with 13 being a major number in the Swiftiverse) however, higher donations of any other Swift-inspired amount are, of course, also welcome. Think $19.89, $22, or even $89.

While close to a half-million people are expected to attend Swift's Eras Tour shows between Rogers Centre in Toronto in November and BC Place in Vancouver in December, "Tay It Forward" organizers are encouraging even those who didn't score tickets to pitch in a few bucks.

"You don’t need to attend a concert to be part of this fan project and have the best day. All Swifties and friends of Swifties are welcome! Whether you’ve been watching livestreams, singing in the car, getting lost upstate, dancing like you’re made of starlight at Taylgate, or were one of the lucky ones who got a ticket—YOU can be part of this!"

The project has surpassed its first goal of making it over the $1,989 line (the numbers honour Swift's 1989 album, named for the pop icon's birth year), with a couple of months and a ways to go.

Donors are sharing their stories and rallying support on social media, including on Facebook pages dedicated to Eras Tour dates in Toronto and Vancouver, and the Tay It Forward Canada page .

Donations can be made via the Food Banks Canada "Tay It Forward" fundraising portal.

White Nights

Although the phenomenon known as the "White Nights" is not unique to St. Petersburg, in no other northern city have they received such poetic and literary acclaim. What could be more romantic than a walk along the banks of the city's rivers and canals in almost broad daylight, no matter what the time of day? No other major European city can rival this experience nor the atmosphere on the streets of St. Petersburg during the summer months - lively, friendly, romantic and bustling with people throughout the night as well as the day!

From late May to early July the nights are bright in St. Petersburg, with the brightest period, the White Nights, normally lasting from June 11 th to July 2 nd . The White Nights (Beliye Nochi) are a curious phenomenon caused by St. Petersburg's very northerly geographical location - at 59 degrees 57' North (roughly on the same latitude as Oslo, Norway, the southern tip of Greenland and Seward, Alaska). St. Petersburg is the world's most northern city with a population over 1 million, and its stands at such a high latitude that the sun does not descend below the horizon enough for the sky to grow dark. In fact night becomes curiously indistinguishable from day, so much so that the authorities never need to turn the city's streetlights on!
