Mi. 15.02.2023 · 20:00 – 23:00.

riverdance tour 2022 bremen

Riverdance 25th Anniversary Show Review

Disclosure:  Dance Dispatches  received complimentary admission to write an open and honest review of the Riverdance 25 Anniversary Show in Wimbledon.

There’s a reason why Riverdance is synonymous with Irish dance, the whole world over. Now, a quarter century after the show’s international debut in Dublin, the rhythm of Riverdance once again strikes the stage (literally), sounding with a renewed vigour.* And while they perform sans Michael Flatley and Jean Butler, the troupe has recruited a new generation of torrential talent.

* The original Riverdance 25th Anniversary Show was postponed over a year due to Covid-19, so it’s closer to 26 years – if you’re being pedantic. But the important thing is they’re back on the road for their UK tour before heading to the US in 2022.

A Quick History of Riverdance – The Show

Before it became an evening-long spectacle, Riverdance first made an appearance at the Eurovision Song Contest, hosted by Dublin in 1994. A few months later, the 7-minute performance showed again at the Royal Variety Performance in London. And a few months after that , the extended Riverdance – The Show (the world’s first Irish dance show) sold out for five weeks straight in Dublin. From Dublin, the cast returned to London before hopping over to North America and subsequently touring the world.

So, how is the Riverdance 25 th Anniversary show different from the original? The latest press release explains:

“Composer Bill Whelan has rerecorded his mesmerising soundtrack while producer Moya Doherty and director John McColgan have completely reimagined the ground-breaking show with innovative and spectacular lighting, projection, stage and costume designs and many of the cast for this rescheduled tour are so young that they were not even born [in 1995, when the show first opened]!”

As a self-proclaimed Riverdance enthusiast, who watched Riverdance – The Show in person a few decades ago (and repeatedly viewed the VHS tape as a child), I’d sum this up by saying the show largely remains the same. The new costume designs and the pretty digital set projections by High Res are thoughtful updates; and they don’t detract from the original choreography, performance and spirit of the show.

Is digital scenery the way forward? The Rockettes similarly zhuzhed up their Christmas Spectacular show at Radio City Musical Hall by introducing projections in 2019. And video projections also played a key role in staging, as in Another Kind of Blue’s tech-savvy Flirt with Reality dance show .

Riverdance – The New 25th Anniversary Show Review

Sitting in a theatre seat for the first time since ZooNation’s Message in a Bottle 18+ months ago, next to a Dance Dispatches Social Club member, I excitedly await the show. Despite knowing some of the cultural references that go hand-in-hand with Riverdance , she doesn’t quite know what to expect. And I’m thrilled for her.

The historical highlight reel of Riverdancers and their musicians from the past quarter century unleashes a wave of nostalgia. A haunting melody steals out into the theatre, setting a mildly eerie atmosphere – and the dancers slowly enter, partially obscured by dry-ice-induced fog.

During the cast’s first number, stomps ripple through the ensemble, an amuse-bouche of their meticulous synchronicity which emerges full-throttle in the famous finale. I notice a fierceness in the performers, particularly the females, that I don’t remember – and I giddily spot Morgan Bullock , who skyrocketed into fame with her Irish dancing to current songs on Tiktok, in the Liffey cast. This was particularly exciting, as an Asian American, who practiced Irish dance for three years in a predominantly white community.

Fun fact: Riverdance names their casts after Irish rivers, and there are currently three.

riverdance tour 2022 bremen

Leading lady Amy-Mae Dolan gives a diaphanous performance from start to finish, while counterpart Bobby Hodges hits stride in the second act, coming into his own as he and his crew playfully battle New York City tap dancers Kenji Igus and Tyler Knowlin in modern-day Brooklyn. Hodges hits the right poses and nails signature moves, like the hitch-kick-heel-click combo with an upright spine; but he proves much more endearing in the friendly ribbing with the tappers.

Immigration and the multicultural exchange of ideas are important show themes. But even if you don’t know exactly scenes flit between past and present as you pop into a firelit gypsy camp with a flamenco dancer, watching a septet of joyous Russian folk dancers and eventually heading back to NYC [in a ‘barrio’ – the set told me so] for another round of flamenco-slash-Irish dance… It’s all good fun – adding more variety into the high-calibre dance show.

riverdance tour 2022 bremen

Unfortunately, the New Wimbledon Stage theatre with a proscenium width of just 34 feet, seemed to stunt some of the excitement – with dancers blending into the scenery behind them and looking cramped when they formed a full line. Travelling steps must have also been stunted to fit the space, but the dancers will have more breathing room at the Eventim Apollo in London (63 feet wide) and even more in the US. (The stage in Boston’s Wang Theatre in Boston stretches 80 feet.)

Riverdance is a riveting Irish dance show that propelled the cultural dance style to enormous popularity. The way the choreographers have assembled basic hop-2-3s and leap-2-3s, interspersed with fancier tricks, and set them on a large corps was ground-breaking more than two decades ago. And the current performers’ precision and coordination rival a Swiss watch.

A quarter of a century later, Riverdance is still extraordinary. The anniversary show felt like a long overdue reunion – and left the audience laughing, happily clapping in almost-unison, unconsciously accelerating the rhythm – just like normal times. Viva Riverdance , which will undoubtedly stand the test of time.

Riverdance The Animated Adventure was released on Netflix in the United States on January 14, 2022, where it swiftly landed a spot on the streamer’s Global Top 10 list. With an original score by Grammy Award-winning composer Bill Whelan, the animated musical comedy features the incredible craft and skill of the Riverdance troupe by utilizing motion capture of their performances to create the animated dancing in the film. Tour lead dancers Maggie Darlington and Anna Mai Fitzpatrick and Executive Producer/Director Padraic Moyles were involved with the dance production for the film, while tour musicians Mark Alfred and Tara Howley play on the film score.

Riverdance began its journey as the interval act in the 1994 Eurovision Song Contest, produced for television by Moya Doherty. This electrifying and innovative seven-minute dance piece was then developed into a full-length stage show by Producer Moya Doherty, Composer Bill Whelan and Director John McColgan. With its fusion of Irish and International music and dance, the show broke all box office records during its world première run in Dublin in early 1995. When the show transferred to London the reaction was unprecedented. There followed a hugely successful tour starting in New York in March 1996, where 8 sold-out shows at Radio City Music Hall heralded the start of more than two decades of touring by Riverdance companies throughout North America. Since its inception, Riverdance has packed theatres throughout North America, Oceania, Asia, Europe, South Africa and South America.

Riverdance 25 th Anniversary Show has been designed by lead designer Peter Canning, featuring Set by Alan Farquharson, Lighting by Andrew Voller and Video by Cosmo AV along with Costumes by Joan Berginand Sound by Michael O’Gorman.

The Boy Band Project Brings a Great Show and Brings Back Nostalgia Of a Simpler Time

riverdance tour 2022 bremen

Having interviewed The Boy Band Project , I went to see their show at City Winery, where they have a residency. I had heard they were good, but was happily surprised at how good. The Boy Band Project   transports you back to a time when the boy band phenomenon dominated pop culture.  For 90 minutes you get unsurpassed vocals, synchronized choreography, and chart-topping hits by NSYNC, Backstreet Boys, Boyz II Men, Jonas Brothers, One Direction, and more of the popular guy groups from the ‘90s.

Each boy band memeber is an archetype with founder, producer and choreographer Travis Nesbitt as “The Boy Next Door”

and Jesse Corbin as “The Bad Boy”

riverdance tour 2022 bremen

Jesse Corbin

They all give their heart and soul with tongue-in-cheek humor, flawless harmonies, high octane moves, bulging muscles, tight ends and Broadway caliber talent. These boys will have you remembering a time when life was all so much simpler.

Expect to hear NSYNC’s “Tearin Up My Heart”, “This I Promise You,” and of course “Bye Bye Bye”, Backstreet Boys’s “Everybody,” “I Want It that Way,” “Quit Playing Games” and “All I Have to Give”,  New Kids on the Block’s “You Got It (The Right Stuff)” and “Step by Step,” BBMak’s “Back Here”, Boyz II Men’s “I’ll Make Love to You” and One Direction’s “What Makes You Beautiful” and “Story of My Life”

The vocals were stellar, but what really makes this show is the choreography, which uses jumps, spins, turns, kicks, back bends, pelvic grinds, crotch attention and lying and crawling all over tables with wildly applauding fans of all genres, ages and genders.

Never having been into this craze, if I had known how hot and sensual it was, I would have paid more attention.

The Boys will be back at City Winery, 25 11th Avenue (Pier 57),  April 20 and 27, May 11 and 25, June 15 and 29th.

Illinoise: A Joyous Dance of Yearning, Loss, and Acceptance

riverdance tour 2022 bremen

A theatre/dance production based on Sufjan Stevens‘ 2015 album has opened up at the  Park Avenue Armory and plays through March 23 . Making this music come excitingly alive is director, choreographer and co-writer, Justin Peck, along with co-writer Jackie Sibblies Drury with phenomenal musical direction and supervision from Nathan Koci, music arrangements and orchestration by Timo Andres, sound design by Garth MacAleavey.

As you enter the theatre, you notice the upside-down pine trees and realize nothing is the way we will perceive it. Perched on top of a graffiti-covered wall, above the stage are an eclectic mix of instrumentalists, who double as vocalists, along with three exceptional singers (keyboardist Elijah Lyons and electric guitarists Shara Nova and Tasha Viets-VanLear) whom I cannot say enough about. Their smokey vocals’ raspy qualities are otherworldly. The scenic design by Adam Rigg and lighting design by Brandon Stirling Baker, let us know where we are and where we are going. This is a tale of yearning, loss, and acceptance.

There is no dialogue, so the language is the dance and the lyrics and the rhythms of the songs.

The story follows Henry (Ricky Ubeda), who leaves his boyfriend Douglas (Ahmad Simmons) in the middle of the night and ends up. in what looks like a writers retreat with a camp fire. At the bonfire, those who are there share their stories.

riverdance tour 2022 bremen

Byron Tittle and Robbie Fairchild Photo Stephanie Berger

As the group gets ready “Come On! Feel the Illinoise!” we get with two notably winning performances. First of jazz by Rachel Lockhart and the Byron Tittle taps to perfection and almost steals a show that hasn’t;t even truly begun.

In “Jacksonville” Jo (Jeannette Delgado), comes face-to-face with Christopher Columbus, Ronald Reagan, Jerry Falwell, and others, as she battles the undead. The masks by Julian Crouch were haunting.

Next was another haunting piece entitled “John Wayne Gacy, Jr.,” danced by Alejandro Vargas and cast. The lyrics will have you quietly wondering what is behind people’s eyes. “And in my best behavior/I am really just like him/Look beneath the floor boards/For the secrets I have hid.”

Then “The Man of Metropolis” had the brilliant Robbie Fairchild as Clark Kent i.e, Superman. Clark and the entire ensemble had shirts with the famous “S,” flapping in the breeze.

riverdance tour 2022 bremen

Ricky Ubeda, and Ben Cook Photo Stephanie Berger

Finally, Henry tells his story “Decatur.” Here we meet his best friends Carl (Ben Cook) and Shelby (Gaby Diaz). Henry is secretly in love with Carl but Carl loves Shelby. Henry and Carl go on a road trip from Chicago to New York until Carl finds out she has bone cancer and they dance a duet to “Casimir Pulaski Day”. The choreography is so effective at communicating the devastation as Shelby eventually fades. Peck’s ability to transform movement into language is heartbreaking and joyous from moment to moment.

riverdance tour 2022 bremen

Carl is tormented with suicidal thoughts until he leaps into darkness.

Henry learns of his friend’s death, and we are back at the beginning as Henry is leaving for the campfire.  As the other participants console Henry his boyfriend, Douglas, appears and joins the group. At that point everyone celebrates the beauty of life.

Also dancing were Kara Chan, Christine Flores, Rachel Lockhart, Zachary Gonder and Craig Salstein.

Illinoise  is 90 minutes if truly remarkable music, dance and storytelling. I highly recommend trying to see it, if you get the chance.

Sufjan released a fantastic new album, Javelin , in October.

Illinoise: Park Ave Armory, 67 and Park, through March 23

Updated news:   Illinoise   is moving to Broadway on Wednesday, April 24, 2024 at 2PM at the St. James Theatre. This will be a strictly limited engagement through Saturday, August 10, 2024

Auditions must be submitted through the virtual application link by 5:00 PM CST on March 15, 2024.  Students who are currently in grades 8-12 (2023-2024 school year) are eligible to audition. A limited number of slots are available and the cost to attend the camp is $1100. Students must prepare 2 one-minute vocal musical theatre pieces, a dance combination, as well as a one-minute dramatic monologue for the audition. A performance resume and headshot are also required.

“Ms. Chenoweth has a heart for arts in education, as cemented with the formation of the Kristin Chenoweth Arts & Education Fund,” said Vento, Broken Arrow Performing Arts Center director.“For this camp, we will create a unique opportunity for many high school students to further their creative arts aspirations with these amazing industry professionals.”

Camp will take place July 17-27, 2024, at the Broken Arrow Performing Arts Center. During the camp, students will participate in a variety of hands-on activities including acting, dance, staging, singing and will experience incredible team-building opportunities. The week will end with an amazing student-faculty performance called the Kristi Awards.

“I just can’t wait to announce who will be directing our camp, as well as our faculty and some exciting surprises in store for all campers this year,” said Chenoweth. “My most important mission in this life is to inspire–always inspire. And I can promise you that is what we are going to do once again at camp this summer. We are going to inspire ourselves, inspire each other, and inspire others to be better.”

Last year’s camp saw students from five countries and 21 states, learning all about musical theatre while interacting with Broadway professionals powerful small group sessions.

The application will be available online at  www.kcbbc.camp  and must be submitted by 5:00 PM, March 15, 2024. Information is also available for scholarship opportunities and a link for donors to sponsor a student.  For more information, visit the website or call 918-259-5723.

Theatre Review: ‘Riverdance’ 25th Anniversary Show at the Kennedy Center

riverdance tour 2022 bremen

Yes, they are stomping by again. A year after the dreaded cicadas, a decidedly more pleasant syncopated sound filled our ears and engulfs our senses. I will attempt to use the word phenomenon only once, but “Riverdance” is back and, surprisingly, appearing at the Kennedy Center for the first time.

The return of “Riverdance” is a thunderous sign that the two-year, arts and life reset is over. Creator, Sir Terry Wogan , announced to the eagerly anticipating St. Paddy’s day audience that the cast and crew had to abruptly stop their tour in March 2020 at Radio City Music Hall. Everyone connected with it had to find their way home. Now reunited and on the road again, this is billed as the reimagined “Riverdance” 25 th Anniversary Show. After more than 15,000 performances, you would think that this sound and motion spectacle might cause a few “ho hum” reactions from the performers and to those  who have experienced the show several times. Not a chance.

…an ensemble-driven uniformity of motion—at times nuanced, at times explosive…unforgettable.

This being the comeback tour of the Irish dance and music extravaganza, the creative minds felt compelled to inject added visual and audio effects. Veteran “Riverdance” followers will appreciate the quite amazing 3D animated backdrops that give each scene new perspective—a realistic babbling brook or a haunting moonlit night.

The show originally featured the oversized ego and testosterone-glazed machismo of Michael Flatley , juxtaposed with the technical brilliance and ice maiden sultriness of Jean Butler, both Irish dancing champions. Since that personality-driven inception, the ensuing editions of “Riverdance” have been true ensembles, with many interchangeable parts supporting the show and swapping out the two lead dance roles, sometimes thought of as the thematic Lord and Lady of the Dance.

Fergus Fitzpatrick and Amy-Mae Dolan were the male and female leads, with Dolan a near double for Simmons as a fiery, flaxen-haired lass. Fitzpatrick is fit as a fiddle (as we later see in the pastoral scene with Dolan) and exhibits a sunny smile and technical brilliance throughout the show. Throughout the tour’s run, lead dancers Will Bryant and James Greenan will rotate in as the male lead and Anna Mai Fitzpatrick, Maggie Darlington, and Meadhbh Kennedy will do the same as the female lead, due to the strenuous nature of the show.

Reimagining aside, the creators know their bread and butter. The classic Irish, syncopated dance lines thrillingly open and close the show, interspersed with many other vignettes from Irish folklore and other dance traditions, notably Russian and Spanish. Even the main dance choreography is credited to Flatley and Simmons, so little has changed. But that is not an issue.

One of the fascinating vignettes in the show is the performance by flamenco impresario, Rocio Dusmet, in “Firedance.” We watch her amazingly evocative movement, and then, unexpectedly, she is joined by two of the male Irish dancers. The mix of styles brought together onstage was eye-opening.

Speaking of contrasting styles, one of the highlights of the show was “Trading Taps” featuring the bravura performances of American tappers Dharmish Patel and Tyler Knowlin. Showing the NY jive, street dancing style, their freelance tapping was technically exquisite and joyful, actually showing much more variety of motion than the Irish dancers that joined them in an onstage tap-off. A stunning explosion of tapping speed pushed the dancers to the limit. Reminiscent of “West Side Story,” the Irish and African American tap dancers went back and forth, exchanging routines, to the raucous delight of the crowd, before the dancers joined together in cultural unity.

The musical accompaniment, especially the fiddle, worked well as a counterpoint to all the movement, if a little long at times in the solos. The musicians—fiddler Haley Richardson, drummer/bodhran player Mark Alfred, saxophonist Emma Frampton, and Tara Howley on ullean pipes/concertina—were accomplished and engaging. The singers were competent, but in such a fast moving show, the songs actually slowed down the momentum.

I especially enjoyed the pastoral scene, reminiscent of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” with Fitzpatrick and Dolan showing their versatility and physique with slow, sensual ballet moves.

Costumes by Joan Bergin were effective—males are in streamlined black attire and women in lighter garb to capture the lights. Composer Bill Wheelan has kept the natural flow of musical success, though the bass needs some toning down. Director John McClogan knows the show well and has integrated the parts admirably. But the essence of “Riverdance” is ensemble-driven uniformity of motion—at times nuanced, at times explosive. It is at its best when the troupe is aligned left to right with purpose and power, and it always works.

If you‘ve not seen “Riverdance,” the experience is unforgettable.

Running Time: Two hours and 15 minutes with one intermission.

“Riverdance” runs through March 27, 2022 at the Opera House, John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, 2700 F St NW, Washington, DC 20566. For tickets and information, go to this link.   For more information on upcoming performances at the Kennedy Center, go to their website.

Review: RIVERDANCE 25TH ANNIVERSARY SHOW at Kennedy Center

The spectacular looks better than ever!

pixeltracker

Twenty-seven years ago, the international dance phenomenon known as Riverdance began enchanting audiences. Twenty- five years ago it began touring the world and to this day millions of people have been enthralled by it's mix of music, dance and musicianship. Oddly enough, it's current engagement at Kennedy Center's Opera House is the first time the show has played that particular venue so it was truly an experience seeing the show in this grand hall. Seeing it on St. Patrick's Day also added a whole new level for sure. Oh, some of the audience outfits!! The full-blown leprechaun suit won my vote for most creative.

One of the reasons Riverdance is such a beloved attraction is because Bill Whelan 's music (expertly orchestrated by Whelan and Nick Ingram) truly drives the show. From the opening number "Reel Around the Sun" onward the music helps to tell the story of the dances and just keeps the energy of the show at full throttle throughout.

As this show is called Riverdance the choreography is definitely front and center.

It took eleven choreographers to bring the show to life including Michael Flatley . If that name sounds familiar it might be because after Riverdance Flatley branched out on his own to create his own show called Lord of The Dance .

Of the group numbers "Reel Around the Sun", "Riverdance", and "American Wake" are three of the standout moments. This is truly an ensemble effort. If any of the dancers are slightly off, you'll definitely notice. I was totally impressed by the precision and top shelf energy each member presented.

Review: RIVERDANCE 25TH ANNIVERSARY SHOW at Kennedy Center

Riverdance is not just Irish dance. There is a wonderful flamenco section entitled "Firedance" featuring soloist Rocio Dusmet and a section called "Trading Taps" featuring master tappers Tyler Knowlin and Dharmesh Patel . These two features make the show even more universal to any audience member attending.

I mentioned Bill Whelan 's music upfront as one of the things that drives Riverdance . That would not happen without the four-member band made up of Hayley Richardson (Fiddle), Emma Frampton (Saxophone), Tara Howley (Uilleann Pipes / Low Whistle / Tin Whistle / Concertina), and the man who is a show all by himself Mark Alfred (Drums / Percussion / Bodhrán/ Musical Director). These four artists create a solid musical foundation for the dancers and are featured with their own solos as well. "Slow Air and Tunes", and "Slip into Spring - The Harvest" are just two examples of the fine musicianship found within.

Review: RIVERDANCE 25TH ANNIVERSARY SHOW at Kennedy Center

As this is the 25th Anniversary edition of Riverdance , the production elements have been spruced up with a new projection presentation designed by Cosmo AV. Here is a case where the projection doesn't overpower the production. It's a fine line to be able to do that. The images consist of lots of landscapes, some very powerful fire images in the flamenco section, and other striking images.

The vocal performances are also really strong. The big choral performance of "Lift the Wings" is simply heavenly.

Lighting designer Andrew Voller uses lots of color and also creates some really wonderful moods for the darker sections using his well-designed touring light plot.

If you have seen Riverdance before, this version will definitely not disappoint you. If you've never seen Riverdance before, the 25th anniversary edition will be bar none the best introduction to this worldwide sensation. Here's to 25 more years!!

Running Time: Two hours and five minutes with one intermission.

Riverdance The 25th Anniversary Show runs through March 27th, 2022 at Kennedy Center's Opera House which is located at 2700 F St NW, Washington, DC.
