The South is home to dozens of beautiful college campuses , but few measure up to the grandeur and scale of Berry College in Rome, Georgia. Set on 27,000 acres, Berry College claims the title of having the world’s largest campus. While the campus, partially modeled after Oxford University’s Christ Church in England, should definitely be at the top of your list of things to do in Rome, there are plenty of other reasons to visit the small town. Shop and dine your way through the charming downtown, see the state’s largest Victorian era district, and discover the history behind this quintessential Georgia town that’s just an hour’s drive from Atlanta. Here are the 15 best things to do in Rome, Georgia.

Visit Oak Hill & Martha Berry Museum

Get a glimpse into Berry College’s history at the Greek Revival home of its founder Martha Berry. Tour the historic home that tells the story of the Berry family and how they came to create a four-year liberal arts college. Make sure you allow time to visit the Oak Hill Colonial Revival garden that was designed and constructed in the late 1920s and is a great example of 20 th century landscaping trends.

Tour Berry College

Founded in 1902, there’s more than a century of history holding up the hallowed walls on Berry College’s campus . Two major places to make sure you see are the Ford Complex, named for Henry Ford who donated the funds to construct the legendary buildings, and the Mountain Campus. The Ford Complex brings British grandeur to a pastoral Georgia scene thanks to Neo-Gothic architecture inspired by Oxford University’s Christ Church College. The Mountain Campus features pastures, hills, lakes, log cabins, an old mill, and hiking trails leading to the House O’ Dreams, a large stone and board-and-batten cottage on top of Lavender Mountain.

Learn About Native American History at the Chieftains Museum

Enter the former home of Major Ridge, a Cherokee leader who played a major role in Native American history by signing the Treaty of New Echota, which resulted in the relocation of the Cherokee people. Called the Chieftains Museum , his home is designated as a National Historic Landmark, is a site on the National Parks Service’s Trail of Tears National Historic Trail, and is dedicated to preserving and sharing Cherokee history and culture.

You wouldn’t travel to New York City and not see the Empire State Building. So, you can’t travel to Rome without seeing the Capitoline Wolf and the Rome Clocktower . Both major landmarks are located in historic downtown Rome. The Capitoline Wolf, a bronze sculpture depicting the legend of the founding of Rome, presides over town from its perch in front of City Hall. A few blocks away, the Clocktower offers one of the best views of downtown if you’re willing to climb the 107 steps to the top.

Ride or Walk on the ECO Greenway

This 16-mile paved multipurpose trail runs through historic downtown Rome and along the Coosa River. Spend as much or as little time as you please, biking, walking, or jogging on the trail that connects several public parks, attractions, and landmarks.

See a Live Performance at a Historic Theater

Located in Downtown Rome’s River District, this restaurant, bar, and gathering place is a hit among locals thanks to its delicious food and expansive indoor-outdoor dining and play spaces. Blossom Hill’s lunch and dinner menu features everything from smoked meats to chicken tenders and salmon burgers. Complete your meal with a seasonal fried pie or milkshake, then head outside to chow down and maybe get in a round of ping pong or cornhole.

Enjoy a Wine Tasting

Head to the downtown tasting room for Newby Farm + Vineyard to sample the local winery’s available vintages, sip on a glass, or purchase a bottle to take home. Go Paddling on the Etowah River Trail

For those who love to get out on the water, spend an afternoon kayaking, canoeing, or paddle boarding on the Etowah River between Grizzard Park and Heritage Park. The easy six-mile route takes about 2.5 hours to complete and is easily accessible from Dixon Landing at Grizzard Park. Rentals can be found at River Ratz or The Canoe House .

There’s so much to see on the Jackson Hill Trail System , a public recreation area that includes winding trails; historic exhibits, landmarks, and interpretive markers; and a unique attraction called the Labyrinth of Rome . Before being redeveloped by the Works Progress Administration, this area was the location of Fort Norton, which was used during the Civil War. Today, the public is invited to learn about the area’s history, enjoy the natural beauty, and maybe even find some time for meditation as they wander along the labyrinth’s singular path.

13 Incredible Things To Do In Beautiful Rome, Georgia

The story is told that five names of European cities were placed in a bag, and a designated person drew Rome out of that bag. From that point forward, the town has carried that name. When you visit, you will see some significant similarities to its Italian counterpart. The most noticeable geographical factor is the presence of seven hills, and if you pass the historic City Hall, you will see a statue of the Capitoline Wolf with Romulus and Remus from Roman mythology. The statue was a gift from the Roman governor sent to the Georgian city in 1929.  

Founded in 1834 and incorporated as a city in 1847, Rome, Georgia, has developed into a city with a strong identity built on education and the contributions of outstanding people. It is a wonderful place to spend several days, and here are my recommendations for incredible things to do while you are there.

1. Broad Street

Broad Street is the hub of Rome’s downtown and is indeed “broad.” To be exact, it is the second broadest street in Georgia . Both sides are lined with interesting shops and eateries. Harvest Moon, John Henry’s, Honeymoon Bakery, Schroeder’s New Deli, and Ana’s by the River are just a few of the casual, locally owned restaurants, and La Scala Mediterranean is an upscale choice. The newest is a coffee and tea shop called The Sharp Sickle. Their gluten-free pastries are delicious. 

Pro Tips: On-street parking allows 3 hours with no charge. Well-placed garages allow for long-term parking. The Roman Chariot is a free downtown shuttle that runs on Fridays and Saturdays.

2. The American Flag Bridge 

The American Flag Bridge is a stunning sight with its lights reflecting on the river at night, but romantic couples visit during all hours of the day and night. The idea is to buy a padlock, engrave or somehow mark your name or initials on it, then attach it to the bridge, and throw the key into the river, symbolizing everlasting love. Even more special is the fact that the bridge crosses the place where the Etowah and Oostanaula Rivers meet to form the Coosa River. 

Pro Tip: The best place to park to visit the bridge safely is behind Moe’s BBQ on West 1st Street.  

3. Berry College: The World’s Largest College Campus 

Berry College has the world’s largest campus with its expansive 27,000+ acres. Since there are slightly more than 2,000 students, that means they have the privilege of enjoying 188 miles of trails, abundant wildlife, small class sizes, and helpful access to their professors. Three things you will want to find when you visit are the Old Mill (a 42-foot-tall overshot water wheel), the Possum Trot Church, and the nest of bald eagles. 

4. Myrtle Hill Cemetery

Myrtle Hill Cemetery is a beautiful place to visit the graves of significant people in Rome’s history. Near the entrance, you will find the grave of Charles W. Graves, selected as American’s “Known Soldier” from World War I. He died and was buried in France in 1918, brought home and buried in Antioch Church cemetery in 1922, then buried for the final time at Mrytle Hill when a memorial garden was created.

Former First Lady Ellen Axson Wilson, wife of U.S. President Woodrow Wilson, is buried at Myrtle Hill, as well as Dr. Robert Battey — who performed the world’s first oophorectomy — and the Gammon Family. Rosalind Gammon is credited with saving college football in the state of Georgia.

5. Rome-Floyd E.C.O. Center  

Located on the grounds of Ridge Ferry Park, the E.C.O. Center is an educational facility visited by thousands of students each year. In addition to a 2,700-gallon aquarium holding fish that are native to the area, there are also snakes, turtles, and alligators housed inside the former pumping station built in 1893. A wetlands demonstration area has been incorporated outdoors within a short walk of the center. Admission is free.

6. Martha Berry Museum And Oak Hill 

Martha McChesney Berry was born in 1865 and died in 1942. She was barely 5 feet tall, never married, and never had children of her own. However, she left an indelible mark on Rome, Georgia, and the lives of countless students through her commitment to education and her ability to convince benefactors such as Henry Ford to make her ideas and dreams come true. A tour of Oak Hill, the former family home, and the Martha Berry Museum will inform and inspire you. 

Pro Tip: Many scenes in the popular movie Sweet Home Alabama were filmed at Oak Hill. Your tour guide will describe them for you. Imagine Reece Witherspoon in that setting. 

7. Rome Area History Center 

The Rome Area History Center has an excellent location in a very visible corner of Broad Street. The display presents a timeline of Rome’s growth from its beginnings to the present, and Director Selena Tilly is a wealth of information who is happy to answer questions and share insider information. The gift shop has beautiful items representing Rome, such as artwork, jewelry, ornaments, clothing items, and home décor.

8. Best Restaurants In Rome

Rome has numerous chain restaurants, but if you like supporting local businesses, you can find some delicious options. I had a chance to try Provino’s Italian Restaurant with its many pasta dishes, signature salad, and garlic rolls. Blue Fin has great sushi, and Blossom Hill BBQ & Burgers serves beef grown at Berry College. I also heard great reviews for Las Palmas Mexican, Aventine Rome, and Pick O Deli Cafeteria, but there are dozens more that assure a wide variety to suit all preferences. 

Pro Tip: A convenient and comfortable place to stay while you are in Rome is Hampton Inn & Suites on West 1st Street. It is only a few blocks from Broad Street. 

9. Clocktower 

Events are planned throughout 2022 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Clocktower. People of Rome have been synchronizing their watches to match this clock for a long time. It stands on Neely Hill, one of Rome’s seven hills, and there are 107 steps to the top for the best view in town. Be sure to stop by the Rome Area History Center for a list of the year’s events. Otherwise, it is open for public tours on the first Saturday of every month in the summer. Once inside, you will find a mural museum. 

10. Play Tennis Or Pickleball 

Rome Tennis Center at Berry College has 51 courts and plays host to numerous tournaments and matches throughout the year. In addition, the Downtown Tennis & Pickleball Center has an additional 14 lighted tennis courts and 6 courts dedicated to pickleball, a sport that is rapidly gaining popularity. Bring your racquet and reserve a time at one of these beautiful facilities. 

11. Chieftains Museum 

To fully grasp the history of the Rome region, a visit to Chieftains Museum on Riverside Parkway is a must. The museum’s director, Heather Shores, is passionate about the story of Major Ridge and the way cultures impact one another. Major Ridge was a Cherokee chief who fought alongside General Andrew Jackson at the Battle of Horseshoe Bend. He was awarded the rank of major for his bravery and success in the battle, and from that point forward, Ridge claimed it as his first name.  

Ridge came to the site in 1819 and started farming 200 acres with the help of 30 slaves, some of whom were Choctaw Indians. He became wealthy by adding two businesses: a ferry (which explains the name of Ridge Ferry Park) and a trading post. The original house on the site was a two-story log cabin that was expanded as his wealth grew. You will want to hear about his contributions to the Cherokee people and his connection to the Trail of Tears. 

Pro Tip: The museum is open Wednesday to Saturday from 10:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m. 

12. Trails And Parks Of Rome 

Trails are everywhere around Rome. The Heritage Riverways Trail System offers 16.5 miles of paved paths along the three rivers. Garrard Park has 5.1 miles of trails, and Mount Berry Trail adds another 1.8 miles. Campers will want to check out Cedar Creek Park, Lock and Dam Park, Pocket & Chattahoochee National Forest, Brushy Branch RV Park, and Rocky Mountain Recreation Area. Be sure to pack your walking shoes or bring your bike and camping gear if you want to explore the great outdoors of Rome.

13. Town Of Cave Spring 

A short drive from Rome, but still in Floyd County, you will find the town of Cave Spring, which was incorporated 2 years before Rome was founded in 1832. The town loves gathering for events downtown or at Rolater Park throughout the year, but any time you can browse the stores and eat in the restaurants, you should. Southern Flavor is a meat-and-three place for lunch. Linde Marie’s Steakhouse serves dinner, and Local Joe’s serves up good barbecue, to name a few.

Pro Tip: The Mexican cornbread at Southern Flavor is wonderful, and Christa’s Etc. is filled to the brim with antiques, collectibles, and jewelry.

15 Best Things to Do in Rome (GA)

Rome is the largest city in Floyd County, which sits on the state border with Alabama, and also the largest in the whole of northwest Georgia.

Located in the foothills of the famed Appalachian Mountains, its abundance of waterways first attracted Creek and Cherokee peoples.

European settlers arrived in the 1830s, forcing native Americans from their land, and Rome developed over seven hills just like its Italian namesake.

A trading hub since its earliest days, the city has adapted to modern industries, making it a thriving community blending past, present, and future.

Here are the 15 best things to do in and around Rome Georgia.

1. Chieftains Museum

Officially known as Chieftains Museum / Major Ridge Home, this attractive clapboard building was the home of Major Ridge, a Cherokee leader who negotiated the ceding of ancestral land to the United States.

He did this because he believed it was the better of two evils – the other being the land forcefully taken from his people.

However, he eventually paid for this decision with his life, being assassinated by other members of the Cherokee nation.

This history is detailed in the museum, which has its origins in a smaller log house dating right back to 1792, just a few years after the American declaration of independence.

It forms a stop on the Cherokee Trail of Tears, which links sites associated with the removal of this people from their ancestral lands.

2. Historic Clock Tower

Located on Neely (also known as Tower) Hill, Rome Clock Tower was built in 1871 as a water tower, which explains its slightly unusual appearance.

Its water tank was almost 20 metres tall by eight metres wide, and capable of holding close to one million litres.

Its four-faced clock was added only a year later, with each face more than two metres in diameter.

Visitors are welcome to climb the 107 steps that spiral around the inside of the tower to a viewing platform offering stunning views across the city.

The former water tanks are used to display the works of local artists.

3. Myrtle Hill Cemetery

Located on another of Rome’s seven hills is Myrtle Hill Cemetery, a burial place that is significantly linked with major points in the city’s history.

Containing the remains of more than 20,000 people, the cemetery was used to bury soldiers that died during the American Civil War. this includes several hundred who fought on the Confederate side.

Its Veterans Plaza also contains the Tomb of the Known Soldier, one of few US troops who fought during the First World War to be buried in home soil. The plot of Private Charles Graves is marked out by three Maxim guns from the period.

Myrtle Hill Cemetery also contains the grave of Ellen Axson, the first wife of President Woodrow Wilson. She grew up in the city and is the only First Lady buried in Georgia to date.

4. Rome Area History Museum

The Rome Area History Museum occupies a magnificent red brick building on the banks of the Oostanaula River immediately before it joins the Etowah to form the Coosa River.

It’s displays and artifacts lead visitors through the history of the city and the surrounding county, with exhibition spaces dedicated to the most important times in the area’s past.

Its collection of historic documents, photographs, maps and personal items concentrates on European settlement of the area, since the Chieftains Museum describes the region’s native American heritage.

It has important spaces dedicated to the Civil War period, and the agricultural way of life that lasted well into the twentieth century.

5. Rome Braves

Rome is home to a minor league baseball team known as the Rome Braves.

Though a step below the major league teams that have become household names throughout the world, such as the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox, a baseball game at the Braves’ home ground is still an amazing insight.

Probably the biggest sport in the nation, tickets to a game will reveal the modern traditions and culture of the United States in all their glory, and the pride people have in their home states and cities too.

6. Between the Rivers Historic District

Centered around Broad Street, the Between the Rivers Historic District has a cluster of surviving structures from Rome’s Victorian era. Both private residences and commercial premises are represented.

While just a few blocks long and a similar number wide, together they form the largest area of Victorian properties anywhere in Georgia.

Among them, you’ll find a whole range of boutiques and antiques shops, as well as restaurants that make the perfect stopping point for either lunch or dinner.

On the Oostanaula River side of the district there’s also the Lock Bridge (or the Robert Redden Foot Bridge) to look out for.

Once a swing bridge that was an integral part of the Central Georgia Railway, cross it and you can join the riverside walks up and down the river that form the Heritage Trail System.

7. Appalachian Mountains

Stretching all the way from Alabama to New York State, the Appalachian Mountains are one of the world’s greatest mountain ranges.

And with Rome located amid their foothills, it would be a terrible shame not to explore some of what they have to offer while in the Georgia city.

The nearest sites to Rome are the Coosa Valley, and northern Georgia’s Blue Ridge Mountains.

Here, on Springer Mountain, lies the southern trail head of the famous Appalachian Trail, which runs for about 2150 miles and takes around six months to complete.

If that sort of time is unavailable to you, the summit of Springer Mountain can be reached in 8.6 miles from the visitor center at Amicalola Falls State Park.

This is approximately 1.5 hours from Rome by road.

8. Oak Hill & The Martha Berry Museum

While the name of educator Martha Berry might not be known outside of the Rome area, that shouldn’t stop you exploring the museum bearing her name and the surrounding grounds and farmhouse.

Altogether the site covers almost 70 hectares around a Greek Revival style mansion. The original farmhouse from 1847 was used as a barracks by Union soldiers during the Civil War’s Atlanta Campaign. It was then rebuilt in its current form, when it became a school.

The extensive gardens include an All-American Selections Display of plants, as well as various historic structures that formed the first school rooms on the site.

9. Etowah Indian Mounds

Lining the north bank of the Etowah River, Etowah Indian Mounds is an archaeological site which was inhabited by the Mississippi Culture of native Americans between 1000 and 1500 AD.

Considered one of the most intact sites in this part of the United States, it has three main grass-covered platform mounds and a further three smaller mounds.

The tallest is almost 20 metres high, making it equivalent to a six-story building, and was once believed to have been topped with a series of ceremonial structures.

In addition, the site contains a museum displaying the most important discoveries made here. These include stone statues, jeweler, and pottery.

Etowah Indian Mounds is just 30 minutes south of Rome following Highway 411.

10. Rome Axe Throwing

11. Statue of Romulus and Remus

Standing pride of place in front of Rome City Hall is a bronze sculpture of the mythical founders of Rome, Italy – the twins Romulus and Remus.

A replica of a famous statue of the boys being suckled by a she-wolf that stands on the Capitoline Hill, it was gifted to the city in 1929 by the Italian dictator Benito Mussolini.

In 1996, the Olympic Torch passed the statue as it made its way to Atlanta for the games of that year.

Once you’ve seen the statue, be sure to admire the architecture of City Hall itself, and the 100-year-old Carnegie Library next door.

12. Little Canyon River National Preserve

Roughly 60 km east across the state border in Alabama is Little Canyon River National Preserve.

Although only created in 1992, the preserve is an untouched wilderness protecting more than 6,000 hectares of forest. It also includes the nation’s longest mountaintop river, misguidedly called the Little River.

The Preserve is located at the summit of Lookout Mountain, where the Cherokee nation fought their last battle against American frontiersmen, and also the location of a Civil War battle.

Containing one of the Southeast United State’s deepest canyons, its walls rise 180 metres, and best seen from the scenic drive known as Little River Canyon Rim Parkway.

13. Alhambra – Home on the Hill

Another survivor from a previous age, the Alhambra house was built in 1832, in the very first wave of European settlement in what was to become Rome.

It was built by one of the four founders of the city, a North Carolina planter by the name of Philip Walker Hemphill.

Importantly, this house was where the city’s name was decided upon, supposedly by drawing names out of a hat.

The oldest house still surviving anywhere in Floyd County, it is now part of Darlington School.

14. Dahlonega

Two hours east of Rome is Dahlonega, the location of the first major gold rush in US history, in 1828. Right at the center of the city is the Gold Museum, housed within Lumpkin County Courthouse.

From its steps members of the Dahlonega mint tried to persuade miners not to abandon the city for California, leading to the phrase ‘there’s gold in them thar hills’.

The museum incorporates gold panning equipment, for sifting the gold from the river beds, coins minted in the city, and even gold nuggets in their raw natural form.

Around the city visitors will also discover a number of vineyards, together forming an important part of the American wine industry.

15. Cave Spring

The perfect antidote to a hot Rome summer day is a trip to the natural underground formations of the city of Cave Spring, 20 minutes southwest of Rome.

One of the attractions of Rolater Park, the caves slip beneath the surrounding landscapes in dramatic stalagmite formations including one known as the Devil’s Stool.

Its also a chance to see the origins of the spring after which the city was named, which back on the surface forms a reflective pool and swimming lake.

Elsewhere in the park, stop by Cave Spring Baptist Church, whose bricks were each individually made by African-American slaves in the 1850s.

North of Columbus, on Pine Mountain, is a popular leisure center established by the industrialist Cason Callaway. A cable car ascends to the summit for sweeping views of the Atlanta skyline, only about 15 miles away. You can also climb to the top or follow one of the endurance courses through the treetops on suspended rope walks.

A 1940s locomotive carries passengers on a five-mile track around the park, and a land-and-water tour on a 1940s Army DUKW features local history. Other things to do include a restored antebellum plantation and a museum with Native American artifacts. The Okefenokee Swamp , known to the Indians as the "Land of the Quaking Earth," is an area of swampland in southern Georgia covering more than 770 square miles.

It is a maze of watercourses, cypress swamps, and swamp grassland. Interesting features are the "floating islands," which quake underfoot but nevertheless support whole forests and in the past provided protection for Indian settlements.

The swamp is home to many endangered species, as well as an estimated 10,000 alligators. From the little town of Waycross there are boat trips into the swamp.
