Bretagne Classic 2023 overview

Taking place on September 3, this year’s Bretagne Classic Ouest-France will be the 87th edition of the one-day race in northwest France. First raced in 1931 - and only interrupted by the First World War - the Bretagne Classic is a very long-standing feature of the men’s calendar.

The race, which takes place on the rolling roads of Brittany to the west of Plouay, is something of a sprinter’s Classic. Though it features quite a lot of climbing on constantly up and down roads, none of them are particularly long and the strong sprinters can usually hold on for a bunch finish in Plouay. That said, long-range attacks can succeed too. It’s a long and challenging day out, normally coming in at around 250km in length, and can be made even harder by the unpredictable weather in northern France.

With names like Sean Kelly, Vincenzo Nibali and most recently Wout van Aert on its list of winners, this is a big late-season goal for the one-day racers of the peloton.

Bretagne Classic 2023 route map

Starting and finishing in the town of Plouay, the modern Bretagne Classic route usually heads out on a 250km loop, taking in the roads and hills of southwestern Brittany. The far point of the loop is just past the port town of Vannes, at which point the peloton will turn back northwest and eventually re-enter Plouay from the north.

There are 12 categorised climbs on the route, the first coming straight out of the neutralised zone at km 2.5, and the rest in the last 130km, getting closer together as the peloton approaches the finish. None of the climbs are longer than 1,500m, but some of them are fairly sharp, with 7-9% average gradients. The final ramp comes just a few kilometres from the finish line, offering a launchpad for any late attacks and a big challenge for the sprint teams to stay organised.

Bretagne Classic 2023 contenders

This race is one that suits a broad range of riders: both the sprinters who can climb, and the climbers who can sprint. It’s rare to see a truly pure sprinter win in Plouay, this is certainly more the domain of one-day specialists and sprinters with a little bit of extra kick.

Defending champion Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma) is a rider who is built almost perfectly in this mould, but the Belgian won't be in Brittany this weekend, instead heading to the Tour of Britain to start off his late-season programme.

There’s never been an African winner of the Bretagne Classic - in fact, there have only ever been four non-European winners in its 90-year history - but Biniam Girmay (Intermarché-Circus-Wanty) could change that. The 2022 Gent-Wevelgem is a sprinter who is particularly strong after a long, hard day and that’s exactly the kind of race the Bretagne Classic is. He finished sixth the last time he raced here

There are a number of sprinters who could go well here: Christophe Laporte (Jumbo-Visma), Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Deceuninck), Tim Merlier (Soudal-Quick Step), Dylan Groenewegen (Jayco AlUla) and Giacomo Nizzolo (Israel-Premier Tech) to name but a few. The extremely on-form Mads Pedersen (Lidl-Trek) is also a big favourite - how long can he keep his winning streak going? For any sprinter who isn’t at the Vuelta, this race will be the big goal.

What happened in the Bretagne Classic 2022?

Last year's Bretagne Classic finished in a reduced bunch sprint, with Wout van Aert outsprinting Axel Laurance (B&B Hotels KTM) and Alexander Kamp (Trek-Segafredo) to take the victory.

Bretagne Classic history

The first edition of the Bretagne Classic, then called the Circuit de Plouay, was raced in 1931. Brittany is one of the heartlands of cycling in France, and the race attracted a strong field from the start. Fittingly, it was a Breton rider François Favé who won the first edition. Not surprisingly, the race’s list of winners was dominated by French names until the 2000s, but the first non-French winner came in 1954 in the form of Italian Ugo Anzile - though it would be another 26 years until another non-French rider won.

The race has always been held in late August or September, which has often made it a good pre-Worlds warm-up race. The difficulty of the race makes it a prestigious race to win, and its list of victors shows the calibre needed to succeed here. It’s among the long list of races that Sean Kelly has won, and big names like Frank Vandenbroucke, Vincenzo Nibali and Thomas Voeckler all won here in the 1990s and 2000s. In more recent years, big names in sprinting have added the Bretagne Classic to their tally: Michael Matthews, Elia Viviani, Edvald Boasson Hagen.

Ten riders have won this race twice, but so far, no one has been victorious on three occasions. Of the riders with two wins under their belt, only one is a current rider: AG2R Citroën’s Oliver Naesen. The Belgian could stand to make history and take the record number of wins at this year’s race.

Valentin Madouas wins Bretagne Classic-Ouest France

French champion beats Burgaudeau, Grosschartner and Kung in four-rider sprint

Valentin Madouas (Groupama-FDJ) came out on top in a four-rider sprint to claim the Bretagne Classic-Ouest France, his first WorldTour Classic win of his career, after finishing second at Strade Bianche and fifth at Liège-Bastogne-Liège this year.

The French champion deliberately dropped behind the other riders in the select front group before launching his sprint with 200 meters to go. Not able to get on his wheel, Mathieu Burgaudeau (TotalEnergies) and Felix Großschartner (UAE Team Emirates) pushed hard but had to settle for second and third respectively.

Madouas’ teammate Stefan Küng, who spent 80 kilometres in the front, and 20 of those solo, before being joined by an elite group of chasers, took fourth.

The quartet broke away from a reduced peloton of about 20 riders in the traditional finishing circuit in Plouay.

“I don’t know what to say. I’m really moved. Winning at Plouay, with this jersey, is really extraordinary, it was a dream to win here in my career, in addition with the French champion's jersey. What more could you ask for?”, said an emotional Madouas at the finish. He is the first Breton rider to win on home soil since 1992.

“I had good feelings but not extraordinary either,” he added. “I knew the sprint by heart, I told myself that I had to come from behind, I played with them a bit and Stefan buried them well in front.”

How it unfolded

Centered around Plouay, the 258.3km course delivered a loop of tough, selective racing in Brittany with 4,235 metres of elevation before the finish line. The early kilometres were marked by the two-rider breakaway of Aaron Van der Beken (Bingoal WB) and Alessandro Tonelli (Green Project-Bardiani CSF-Faizanè) while Alpecin controlled the front of the peloton.

The duo was reeled back in under 95 kilometres to go, just as the hills came hard and fast, starting with Ty Coz with its maximum ramp of 12%.

Taking advantage of the 800-metre gravel section Mick van Dijke (Jumbo-Visma) and Stefan Küng (Groupama-FDJ) pulled away with 80km to go. The pair worked together to establish a gap hovering around the one-minute mark while  Lilian Calmejane (Intermarché-Circus-Wanty) and Gianni Moscon (Astana Qazaqstan) gave chase temporarily.

In the peloton, Soudal-Quick Step did the majority of the pacemaking with assistance from UAE Emirates and INEOS Grenadiers.

With 32 kilometres to go, Küng continued solo with a minute lead to the field as Van Dijke faded. Attacks started to come one after another in the peloton, starting with Jonas Rutsch (EF Education-EasyPost) who tried a few times to get away but was reeled back in.

The attacks and the leg-sapping climbs took their toll, reducing the peloton to around 25 riders. Riders going off the back included Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Deceuninck) and Christophe Laporte (Jumbo-Visma)

Küng had a gap of 35 seconds as he climbed Marta (900m at  9%) with ramps of 13%., while Tiesj Benoot (Junbo-Visma) did a lot of work shutting down attacks in the field.

Benoît Cosnefroy launched a decisive move with 20km to go. He was soon joined by Felix Großschartner  (UAE Team Emirates), Marc Hirschi (UAE Team Emirates), Jai Hindley (BORA-hansgrohe), Alex Aranburu (Movistar), Valentin Madouas (Groupama-FDJ), Mathieu Burgaudeau (TotalEnergies) and they connected with Küng.

A group of chasers, including Benoot, Jasper De Buyst (Lotto Dstny), Frederik Wandahl (BORA-hansgrohe) swelled the number to 20 riders as they entered the short 11.7km finishing circuit.

Küng, Madouas, Burgaudeau, Großschartner and Wandahl managed to break away but the Côte du Lézot (1km at 6%) followed by the short and steep Kerscoulic (225m at 8.9%) were too much for Wandahl, leaving the four riders at the front to battle for victory.

Crossing the line 17 seconds later, De Buyst took fifth from the chase group ahead of Hirschi and Benoot.

World champion Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Deceuninck) crossed the finish line over eight minutes later.

Circuit final Bretagne Classic 2023

PREVIEW | Bretagne Classic 2023 - Mathieu van der Poel main favourite on rainbow jersey debut

Preview . The Bretagne Classic is perhaps the first big classic when it comes to the finale of the season. Taking place on the 3rd of September, the Breton race is a gathering of plenty world-class sprinters, classics riders and climbers.

There will be 259 kilometers on the menu which will make for a very complicated race towards the end – where this year, the action will be densely packed. There have been years where the race has finished in a reduced bunch sprint, but the route this time around is very favourable to the classics specialists and aggressive racing. There are 3600 meters of climbing to tackle, with plenty narrow roads, short and sharp ascents which will see some tense moments and likely some early attacks.

Final startlist Bretagne Classic with van der Poel, Philipsen, Healy, Sagan, De Lie, Laporte, Alaphilippe, Matthews and Girmay

PREVIEW | Bretagne Classic 2023 - Mathieu van der Poel main favourite on rainbow jersey debut

This year however most of the race’s difficulties are packed into the last 30 kilometers. These will be highly difficult, with several small hilltops, fast sections and narrow roads to tackle. Marta (900 meters; 8.3%; 27.5Km to go) will be the hardest and the first of the ascents, which should see a furious battle for positioning, and many attacks over the top. On such terrain it is very hard to chase, so whoever gets a gap ahead won’t be easy to bring back.

There will be a small plateau and descent before Longeo (1.5Km; 5.7%; 19Km to go) which sees gradients up to 15% and is the longest of the ascents, where those who won’t enjoy the climbs are likely to struggle. A small plateau will follow and then there’ll be a sharp ramp at Le Leuzot (800 meters, 5%) which ends with 12 kilometers to go, it is another opportunity for attacks to be launched.

Profile & Route Bretagne Classic 2023

PREVIEW | Bretagne Classic 2023 - Mathieu van der Poel main favourite on rainbow jersey debut

The race won’t end there however as quickly the riders will face Rostervel (1.2Km; 4.6%; 9Km to go), a straightforward climb out of Plouay, but then the riders descent back into the into town and climb out via Le Lezot (900 meters; 4.6%; 4.5Km to go) and Kersoulic (400 meters; 5.5%; 3.5Km to go) for a final time, before the fast run-in to the line where the sprint will feature some smooth gradients.

The Weather

PREVIEW | Bretagne Classic 2023 - Mathieu van der Poel main favourite on rainbow jersey debut

Meaningful western breeze. The race however towards it's finale features plenty direction changes, climbs with different wind directions, so I can't say that it'll make a big difference.

Soudal Quick-Step presents strong lineup for Bretagne Classic lead by Julian Alaphilippe

The Favourites

Alpecin-Deceuninck - A team in form. What they've been doing this year is stupendous and a classic like this with some hills but also a possible sprint outcome is ideal for them. Their classics weapons are here, Soren Kragh Andersen presents opportunities to play tactically from very early on, but the danger is in Mathieu van der Poel - who has taken rest after the World Championships, but will be motivated to debut his new equipment - and Jasper Philipsen who's proven himself a very capable classics rider this season and virtually unbeatable in the sprints.

Jumbo - Visma - Christophe Laporte is a very strong rider and this type of race will suit him very well. He'll be Jumbo's main card in search of success, whilst the team also has Tiesj Benoot who will be a worthy outsider and usually a rider who performs very consistently in the hilly classics.

Tadej Pogacar skips Bretagne Classic and focuses preparation on Il Lombardia

UAE Team Emirates - No options for the sprint however plenty riders to attack, as was the case in the BEMER Cyclassics. Brandon McNulty, Marc Hirschi, Felix Grossschartner and Alessandro Covi are all quality riders for the hilly races, whilst Rafal Majka himself does have the legs to also be an outsider. UAE have the potential to blow up the race and try to infiltrate riders in possible winning moves.

Soudal - Quick-Step - The team will come down mostly to Julian Alaphilippe and Mauro Schmid . Perhaps the Swissman the main card looking at his performance in the World Championships, Alaphilippe has been struggling with endurance quite a lot, at his best definitely a victory contender, however it'll be difficult to do it here.

Lotto Dstny - Lotto have Arnaud De Lie who is in great form, with good performances at the BEMER Cyclassics and Renewi Tour. He's got the climbing legs, however this is is a race that's grown harder over the years and will be a difficult taks. Nevertheless he may profit from the team's numbers, with Victor Campenaerts and Jasper de Buyst - the latter mainly - also showing good form and being well suited to a race like this.

INEOS Grenadiers - INEOS have Elia Viviani a former winner of the race who has shown his only positive performance of the season recently as he was third in BEMER, a good sign. Ethan Hayter ideally a good card for this race but his form is in doubt. The team's options most likely depend on attacks in the climbs with Pavel Sivakov and Michal Kwiatkowski .

Medical Report Vuelta a Espana 2023 | Update stage 14 - Jumbo-Visma see one of it's domestiques crash

The race is less likely to, but can still end in a sprint. Alex Aranburu is a puncheur who can in any scenario be close to the front, however in case of a conservative race or one that ends up finishing in a sprint, other figures can be present such as Jonathan Milan, Michael Matthews, Peter Sagan, Jake Stewart or Intermarché-Circus-Wanty with the duo of Biniam Girmay and Madis Mihkels .

In the field of the classics riders we'll find plenty other cards. When it comes to climbers and figures who will perhaps hope for a tough race from the start - so as to be less explosive towards the end - we can think of Guillaume Martin and Ion Izagirre of Cofidis, Alexey Lutsenko , Andreas Leknessund and BORA - hansgrohe leader Jai Hindley .

When it comes to the pure puncheurs, who are likely to be figuring amongst the best, we have EF duo of Ben Healy and Alberto Bettiol who can be extremely dangerous, Frenchmen Benoît Cosnefroy, Mathieu Burgaudeau, Warren Barguil and national champion Valentin Madouas , and lastly Jasper Stuyven and Stefan Küng who can deal a blow here if they find his best form and anticipates the rest.

Mathieu van der Poel's full schedule for remainder of 2023 season - Bretagne Classic and several classics until Paris-Tours

Prediction Bretagne Classic 2023:

*** Mathieu van der Poel ** Jasper Philipsen, Christophe Laporte, Michael Matthews * Marc Hirschi, Felix Grossschartner, Brandon McNulty, Julian Alaphilippe, Mauro Schmid, Arnaud De Lie, Michal Kwiatkowski, Alex Aranburu, Valentin Madouas, Warren Barguil, Alberto Bettiol

Pick : Mathieu van der Poel

Michael Matthews will try to connect second win at Bretagne Classic
