Network Throttling in Safari (Mac) using Network Link Conditioner

May 27, 2022

To simulate slow internet conenctions in Safari, we can't use the developer tools like we can in Chrome.

Network Link Conditioner

Installation

Open the downloaded .dmg file, open the Hardware directory, and double-click on "Network Link Conditioner.prefPane" to install it.

The app will now appear in your System Preferences.

How to simulate a low bandwidth connection for testing web sites and applications.

Facebook just announced an internal initiative called " 2G Tuesdays " and I think it's brilliant. It's a clear and concrete way to remind folks with fast internet (who likely have always had fast internet) that not everyone has unlimited bandwidth or a fast and reliable pipe. Did you know Facebook even has a tiny app called " Facebook Lite " that is just 1Mb and has good support for slower developing networks?

You should always test your websites and applications on a low bandwidth connection, but few people take the time. Many people don't know how to simulate simulate low bandwidth or think it's hard to set up.

Simulating low bandwidth with Google Chrome

If you're using Google Chrome, you can go to the Network Tab in F12 Tools and select a bandwidth level to simulate:

Selecting lower bandwidth in Google Chrome F12 Tools

Even better, you can also add Custom Profile to specify not only throughput but custom latency:

Custom Profiles for Google Chrome that control throughput and latency

Once you've set this up, you can also click "disable cache" and simulate a complete cold start for your site on a slow connection. 20 seconds is a long time to wait.

Google Chrome timeline showing my site on a 2G connection

Simulating a slow connection with a Proxy Server like Fiddler

If you aren't using Chrome or you want to simulate a slow connection for your apps or other browsers, you can slow it down from a Proxy Server like Fiddler or Charles .

Fiddler has a "simulate modem" option under Rules | Performance, and you can change the values from Rules | Customize Rules:

image

You can put in delays in milliseconds per KB in the script under m_SimulateModem:

There's a number of proxy servers you can get to slow down traffic across your system. If you have Java, you can also try out one called " Sloppy ." What's your favorite tool for slowing traffic down?

There is SO MUCH you can do to make the experience of loading your site better, not just for low-bandwidth folks, but for everyone. Squish your images! Don't use PNGs when a JPEG would do. Minify! Use CDNs!

image

However, step 0 is actually using your website on a slow connection. Go do that now.

How to Simulate a Slow Internet Connection for Testing

A completely free and easy solution

Author avatar

My website loads lightning fast on my home computer, but that’s probably because I have Verizon FIOS with a 100/100 Internet plan. Even if I try to use my cell phone, the site still loads exceptionally fast because I have anywhere from four to five bars of 4G LTE speed.

Unfortunately, when I check the load time for my site in Google Analytics, it’s not the 1 or 2 seconds that it takes for the page to load for me, but significantly higher values like 5 or 7 or 10 seconds! Obviously, probably very few people are browsing my site with an ultra-high-speed broadband connection.

Since I wasn’t getting a clear picture of the actual load time for my site, I wanted to simulate a slow connection on my computer to see what components were taking the most time to load. If you look online, you’ll find a lot of sites suggesting proxies and other fancy debugging tools, some of which require payment.

However, there is a solution to this problem that is completely free and much easier to use. If you already have Google Chrome installed on your computer, you already have everything you need to simulate a slower network connection.

In this article, I’m going to show you how to use Chrome to throttle your network connection to whatever speed you desire.

Simulate Slow Connection using Chrome

Go ahead and install Chrome if you don’t already have it installed on your system. Once you do, open a new tab and then press CTRL + SHIFT + I to open the developer tools window or click on the hamburger icon, then More tools and then Developer tools .

developer tools chrome

This will bring up the Developer Tools window, which will probably be docked on the right side of the screen. I prefer it docked at the bottom of the screen, since you can see more data. To do this, click on the three vertical dots and then click on the middle dock position.

developer tools dock position

Now go ahead and click on the Network tab. On the right, you should see a label called No Throttling .

network tab chrome

If you click on that, you’ll get a dropdown list of a pre-configured speeds that you can use to simulate a slow connection.

throttle speeds chrome

The choices range from Offline to WiFi and the numbers are shown as Latency , Download , Upload . The slowest is GPRS followed by Regular 2G, then Good 2G, then Regular 3G, Good 3G, Regular 4G, DSL and then WiFi. Pick one of the options and then reload the page you are on or type in another URL in the address bar. Just make sure you are in the same tab where the developer tools are being displayed. The throttling only works for the tab you have it enabled for.

If you want to use your own specific values, you can click the Add button under Custom . Click on the Add Custom Profile button to add a new profile.

add network throttling profile

When using GPRS, it took www.google.com a whopping 16 seconds to load! Overall, this is a great tool that is built right into Chrome that you can use for testing your website load time on slower connections. If you have any questions, feel free to comment. Enjoy!

Is there any suitable way to simulate slow loading webpage?

I need to do automation(example execute some script) on wepages pages which are taking some time to load say 2 minutes etc.

I've purchased Netpeeker, Netlimiter license. But I'm not able to slow down network speed of my PC as both fail in it in my Windows 10.

One way is to send huge html file from the Webserver so it keeps on downloading for minute or two.

Possibly another way is to connect to a router and place download limit in it. I've check the router settings. The minimum speed however they allow to lower to is 1 MB/s which is still high enough.

Is there any other suitable way to simulate slow loading webpage?

On your browser you have the option to throttle your connection.

  • Open you browser dev tools (F12);
  • Click the "Network" tab;
  • Select which type of connection you want to simulate;
  • Reload the page to apply the speed

Throttle the network speed to test your website on slower connections

While you may develop your website on a fast network connection at home or at work, your users may not be able to use it with an equally fast connection. Perhaps they're in a moving car, or on the subway, or they don't have access to high-speed internet at their place. Whatever it is, they may experience your site very differently than you do because of this.

Testing your site with a slower connection helps you understand how it loads and appears on the screen.

Firefox, Chrome and Edge let you simulate slower network connections to do this.

To throttle your connection:

  • Go to the Network tool.
  • Use the dropdown that says No throttling and choose any of the other values.

You can also do this from the device simulation mode by using the same dropdown there.

The Network panel in Edge showing the network throttling drop-down.

In Polypane:

  • Open the Emulation options .
  • Go to the Network tab.
  • Toggle between the different network speed settings

The Network option in Polypane.
