Escape to the other side of the world and discover this small country that packs a punch.
The country’s two main islands are dramatically diverse. The less inhabited but larger south is home to striking lakes, epic alpine ranges , remarkable marine and birdlife and rugged coastlines. The north is rich in Maori and European culture and is home to miles of sandy beaches, surfing, verdant vineyards, thermal reserves and the country’s cosmopolitan cities of Auckland and Wellington .
A bucket list country for any lover of the outdoors, New Zealand has some of the world’s best hiking and with a population of just 4.6 million it’s easy to get a piece of this spectacular scenery all to yourself. Discover one of its nine ‘Great Walks’ or simply head out into its easily accessible wilderness to kayak tranquil inlets, hike through native bush alive with birdsong or take your pick of the endless secluded beaches. Its diverse environment is a playground for adrenaline junkies who come here in pursuit of white water rafting, skiing, caving, canyoning, skydiving, paragliding and bungee jumping.
New Zealand retains a distinct and fascinating history and culture. Traditional Maori customs are laced with colonial European heritage and a strong Asian influence – all together creating a vibrant and contemporary urban life. The locals are easy going, welcoming and their trademark self-effacing humour is infectious.
The country’s food, which was once a poor spin-off of British fare, is now a fresh and inspiring blend of new world cuisines. It boasts some of the best coffee, an exploding craft beer scene, internationally renowned wines as well as an abundance of fresh seafood.
Best of all? Thanks to its remote location and small population you can discover this country’s treasure trove of wonders away from any crowds and get an authentic taste of the life that is lived and loved by its inhabitants.

Where to go
Bay of Islands
Equally beautiful and historically significant, the bay is peppered with 144 vastly untouched islands that are renowned for their inviting clear waters, subtropical climate and diverse marine life.
New Zealand’s largest cosmopolitan centre is a lively mix of culture, cuisine, music and art with ample green spaces and easily accessible beaches.
A classic Kiwi beach holiday destination made up of petite coastal towns, velvety white-sand beaches and native rainforests teeming with birdlife.
Steaming mud pools, erupting geysers and Maori traditions all make Rotorua and Taupo a special area to visit – one that is distinctively unique to the rest of New Zealand.
The North Island’s wine country is one of New Zealand’s warmest, driest regions with golden colours stretching across arid plains.
Nestled on rolling green hills that spill down to a charming harbour, New Zealand’s capital is an epicentre of culture and creativity – renowned for its arts, gastronomy, heritage and bohemian character.
New Zealand’s sunniest region has a diverse geography ripe for exploring from golden sand beaches to dense forests, the clearest fresh water lake in the world and secluded, enticing rivers.
Marlborough Sounds and Wine Region
Hop from vineyard to vineyard on the wine trail in this diverse, sun-drenched plateau and sample some of the country’s finest wines, most notably the internationally renowned Sauvignon Blanc.
With the swelling Pacific Ocean on one side and the snowcapped Kaikoura Range on the other – Kaikoura is a quaint peninsula village that is a base for discovering some of New Zealand’s best wildlife.
Lake Tekapo and Aoraki Mount Cook
New Zealand’s highest peak, Aroaki Mount Cook, is an arresting sight dominating the skyline of the national park which surrounds it.
West Coast and the Glaciers
The narrow strip of coastline squeezed between the Southern Alps and Tasman Sea plays host to some of New Zealand’s most dramatic landscape, which is quite some claim.
Curious travellers will relish all the new eclectic hubs to discover in a city and region that is full of surprises, friendly locals and an inspirational community spirit.
Queenstown is one of New Zealand’s most picturesque towns, sitting on the tip of the crystal clear Lake Wakatipu. It’s a bustling hub of international and local visitors come to seek out one of the endless thrills on offer here from skiing, white water rafting, canyon swinging, jet boating, mountain biking and bungy jumping.
Dunedin is a university town and there is a good selection of lively restaurants and bars. It is also a great base from which to explore the Otago Peninsula with its rugged landscape, beautiful beaches and wildlife.
With the snowy-peaked Southern Alps sloping down into deep blue waters and lushly forested shores bursting with wildlife, the spectacular Fiordland National Park area in the south-western corner of the South Island is known for its stunning vistas.

New Zealand - Private Travel
New Zealand delivers infinite natural beauty, outdoor adventure, urban charm and exceptional cuisine.
Cinema tourism is big in New Zealand, thanks to The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit movies – find more than 150 locations.
The two islands of New Zealand offer a world of pleasurable pursuits, whether you’re looking for robust adventure or peaceful down-time. Maybe a bit of both? Auckland at the top of the North Island enjoys sunny weather, iconic Polynesian culture, terrific food and wine, and excellent shopping. Beautiful beaches and plentiful hiking trails are just a short drive away, as are ferries to a number of outlying islands. The wineries of Hawke’s Bay entice visitors with tantalizing Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah, while the beaches and luxury resorts get them to stay for a while. Other pastimes here include birdwatching at Cape Kidnappers and hiking the trails around Lake Waikaremoana. New Zealand’s capital city of Wellington is at the southern tip of the North Island, replete with a splendid waterfront, sandy beaches, bakeries and boutiques, and a renowned coffee culture. On the South Island, the hospitality of Christchurch never fails to impress, as do the inlets and beaches of nearby Banks Peninsula. Visitors can embark on wildlife cruises, explore the vineyards of Waipara Valley or drink in the pastoral perfection of Canterbury Plains. New Zealand cuisine delivers a flavourful mix of European, Asian and Polynesian influences. The lamb of course is legendary, with pork and venison not that far behind. Seafood splendour includes salmon and lobster, oysters and scallops. The national dish? Pavlova, a meringue dessert topped with berries, passionfruit and – kiwis.

Day 1 Auckland
Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland is New Zealand’s largest city. Auckland is a multi-cultural urban oasis of food, music, arts and culture. It’s where sparkling waters and lush landscapes meet city sophistication.
Your exclusive New Zealand experience begins in Auckland, the gateway to the North Island. Collect your rental car, explore the city, then make your way to your luxury centrally located accommodation.
In the evening, the fairy lights of Federal Street will lure you into some of the finest restaurants in Auckland or head down to The Viaduct, a food and drinks hub in central Auckland. The Viaduct area is a mecca for excellent restaurants and roof top bars with a relaxing outlook of the harbour.
Park Hyatt Auckland is perfectly located on the water’s edge and offers expansive views across Wynyard Quarter’s Lighter Basin and out to the Waitematā Harbour. The sophisticated waterfront residence has 195 guestrooms, four restaurants and bars, versatile and elegant event spaces, a day spa, 25-metre infinity pool, and a full fitness center. Enjoy a luxurious, 5-star experience.
Stay 2 nights in the Auckland
Accommodation: Park Hyatt, Auckland
Day 2 Auckland
Enjoy your day in Auckland! Spend some time relaxing at one of the numerous local beaches, climb a volcano, sail an America’s Cup yacht or just unwind with some shopping and local cuisine.
For an authentic kiwi afternoon visit Mission Bay, enjoy a stroll along the promenade, hire a kayak or stand up paddleboard, and refuel with some fresh fish and chips by the seaside.
Take a short ferry ride to Rangitoto Island, an iconic part of the Auckland landscape. Climb to the top of the dormant volcano on the Rangitoto Summit Track and experience stunning views of the city.
Participate as crew on an actual America’s Cup yacht. Take the helm, exert energy on the grinders or sit back relax and watch the action as you sail around beautiful Waitemata Harbour.
Spend time shopping at some of Auckland’s popular fashion boutiques, exquisite jewellery stores or choose a special piece of art – some of New Zealand’s best local artists sell works in Devonport’s galleries, just a 15 minute ferry ride from the Downtown Ferry Terminal.
For outstanding culinary options with waterfront views, stroll to Viaduct Basin. Enjoy fresh local cuisine, al fresco dining or have a pint at the rooftop brewery – Dr Rudi’s.
Day 3 Rotorua
Driving time Auckland to Rotorua, 3.5 hours
Enjoy the scenic journey to Rotorua, distinguished by Maori culture and geothermal activity. This diverse city will put on a display as you encounter dramatic geysers, bubbling mud pools, crystal-clear streams, magical forests and 18 beautiful fresh water lakes.
Rotorua sits within the Pacific Ring of Fire, so volcanic activity is part of this town’s past and present. Rotorua is a geothermal wonderland and is the tribal home of the Te Arawa people, who settled in its lakeside geothermal area more than 600 years ago.
Solitaire Lodge Rotorua, one of the first New Zealand luxury lodges, offers secluded luxury accommodation and attentive hosting from a spectacular lakeside location. Renowned for its fine dining, Solitaire Lodge serves contemporary New Zealand cuisine prepared with fresh local produce and complemented by superb wines from selected vineyards.
Your stay at Solitaire Lodge includes complimentary mini bar (alcoholic/non-alcoholic beverages and snacks), pre-dinner drinks and canapés, five course dinner, full country breakfast and light lunch. You will also have use of Lodge dinghies and kayaks.
Stay 2 nights in Rotorua.
Accommodation: Solitare Lodge
Day 4 Rotorua + Mt Tarawera by Heli
Fly to Mt Tarawera by helicopter with Volcanic Air, stand on the crater’s edge of this sacred mountain with sweeping panoramic views and experience a thrilling walk along the crater’s edge.
Later, discover Rotorua’s captivating geothermal landscapes with colourful sinter terraces, spouting geysers and bubbling mud pools. Or join masterchef Charles Royal on an exclusive Māori food trail and bush tour.
Day 5 Taupo
Driving time Rotorua to Taupo, 1 hour
Enjoy the scenic journey to Taupo. Along the way, you may wish to visit Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland, Orakei Korako Geothermal Reserve, or Craters of the Moon.
Taupō is rich in natural beauty with attractions such as the Huka Falls. The Huka Falls is New Zealand’s most visited attraction, where more than 220,000 litres of water thunder over the cliff face every second. Keeping with the water theme, Taupō is a great lake for trout fishing and scenic boat cruises. The Maori rock carvings at Mine Bay, which can only be seen from the water, make for a great boat trip.
Immerse yourself in style on the shores of the Waikato River at Huka Lodge, long considered one of the top retreats in the world. Huka Lodge is set among established gardens along the banks of the surging Waikato River near Lake Taupō on New Zealand’s North Island. Relaxation will come easy as you soak up the serenity with a glass of New Zealand wine expertly paired with cuisine by your executive chef. There are over 20 private dining options, from an intimate riverside pavilion to the atmospheric underground wine cellar.
Stay 2 nights in Taupo. Accommodation: Huka Lodge
Day 6 Taupo
A stay in the spectacular parklike surrounds of Huka Lodge places guests at the doorstep to a host of wonderful experiences of the destination, from traditional fly fishing on the banks of the Waikato River to hiking, golfing and more. Of course, the luxurious setting at Huka Lodge invites leisurely pursuits onsite, including tennis, pétanque and croquet, while the option to read a book on the riverbank, wander the garden paths or enjoy a drink on the terrace are equally appealing.
Day 7 Cape Kidnappers, Hawkes Bay
Driving time Taupo to Napier, 2 hours
Hawke’s Bay is among New Zealand’s leading producers of wine; notably red wines – cabernet sauvignon, merlot and syrah – and stunning chardonnays. It is also New Zealand’s Art Deco capital, with the cities of Napier and Hastings rebuilt in the architectural styles of the time following the devastating 1931 earthquake.
Notable landmarks include Cape Kidnappers, home to the world’s largest mainland colony of gannets; Lake Waikaremoana, home to one of New Zealand’s nine Great Walks; and Te Mata Peak, with its 360 degree views of Hawke’s Bay and spectacular walking tracks.
The Farm at Cape Kidnappers , your luxury lodge for the next three nights, is one of the world’s most extraordinary luxury destinations, set on a 6,000 acre sheep and cattle farm with breathtaking views over the Pacific.
Honoured by Conde Naste Traveller’s Gold List 2017, The Farm exudes character and comfort. With 24 ultra-cosy and spacious cottage suites and a four-bedroom Owner’s Cottage – all with spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean – a stay at the Relais & Chateaux Cape Kidnappers is truly “farm luxe” at its best.
Stay 3 nights in Cape Kidnappers.
Accommodation: The Farm at Cape Kidnappers
Day 8 Cape Kidnappers, Hawkes Bay
Leisure opportunities abound with a par 71 championship golf course designed by Tom Doak, luxurious spa facility, Kiwi Discovery walks where guests can interact with this precious native bird, and adventurous Can Am tours to the outreaches of Cape Kidnappers station.
Day 9 Cape Kidnappers, Hawkes Bay
Immerse yourself in exclusive Hawkes Bay experiences at Cape Kidnappers. Enjoy a memorable selection of Hawkes Bay experiences such as Heli Fishing, hiking, or Can-Am Adventure tours are incredible ways to explore the land and sea of Cape Kidnappers. The team at The Farm are happy to suggest activities, or curate an experience that caters to your interests. Alternatively, relax and rejuvenate your body, mind and spirit at The Spa at Cape Kidnappers.
Day 10 Auckland
Flight transfer Hawkes Bay to Auckland – 1.5 hours
Finish your vacation in Auckland, New Zealand’s largest city. Spend the afternoon relaxing in the city and sampling the exciting culinary scene. For more adventurous options venture to wild west coast beaches, namely Muriwai Beach or Piha, where the Tasman Sea meets long, vast stretches of black sand. Or visit nearby Rangitoto Island a dormant volcanic cone that sits just off the coast from the central city.
Stay 1 night in Auckland
Accommodation: Fable Auckland
Day 11 Depart Auckland

You will arrive at the international airport where you will be collected by your private transfer and whisked away to your gorgeous luxe accommodation stationed in the heart of the city. From here, you may stroll along tree-lined boulevards to exquisite restaurants serving divine New Zealand cuisine and immerse yourself in the atmospheric first stop on your extravagant vacation.
What's Included:
Rotorua - Illustrious Landscapes of New Zealand
Between Auckland and Rotorua, your next destination, lies an impressive expanse of lush wildlands home to a marvelous collection of endemic wildlife you may spot on your way to your spectacular lakeside accommodation. After checking in, you may step onto the deck of your stellar suite to catch a glimpse of the glittering Tarawera lake. This intimate hideaway home is the perfect place to swoon over the natural paradise before you visit landscapes made famous in the Lord of the Rings trilogy and witness rock formations borne from the country’s geothermal activity.
Rotorua - Scenes from the Sky
Today, you will see Rotorua’s staggering untouched wilderness from a unique vantage point as you take to the skies in a private plane set to swoop over the remarkable stretches of land. Peering out of the window, you will lay your eyes upon the soaring forested summits of Mount Tarawera and the winding azure streams of the Waikato River. Your plane will soon land, and you will be allowed to freely explore the volcanic terrain, dipping your toes into the bubbling hot springs and admiring the proliferating greenery.
Napier - Bewitching Displays of Geothermal Activity
You will travel further along the New Zealand countryside this morning after breakfast as you transfer from Rotorua southbound for Napier. The journey will reveal more spectacular geothermal scenes, including sizzling mud pits and steaming geysers that compose the volcanic landscape. Approaching Napier, you may stop by the pounding silver waters of the Huka Falls, an awe-inspiring waterfall beating down an 11-meter drop into the natural pool below. You will soon arrive at your exquisite boutique farm-style accommodation hosted at an esteemed farmland retreat hemmed into the emerald hills.
Napier - Divine Delicacies and Sumptuous Wines
The morning sunshine will envelop Napier’s farmlands in a golden glow, illuminating the landscape as far as the eye can see and nourishing the blossoming buds that blanket parts of the untouched region. After breakfast, you will tour Napier’s acclaimed wine country, stopping at a revered estate that portrays the country’s devotion to decadent wines. Settled in at a table on the estate’s stylish terrace, you will explore the nuances of flavor distinct to each bottle prepared by the local makers while tucking into a delightful spread of delectable dishes paired perfectly with the wines.
Wellington - Golden Visions of New Zealand’s Farmlands
Traveling to Wellington today, you will cruise through the rich farmlands that sweep the countryside of the Hawke’s Bay. Between images of the endless golden fields and the array of fluffy white sheep, you will be charmed by New Zealand’s endearing rural landscapes before you arrive at the country’s thriving capital. After dropping off your belongings at your royal suite, you may take pleasure in a light stroll along the promenade alongside the sparkling sea views and indulge in an assortment of gourmet meals prepared at one of the many award-winning restaurants.
Picton - Gliding Gently across the Sparkling Sea
You will make your way from Wellington to Picton today, a distance which you will cover mostly by ferry. Arguably one of the most beautiful ferry rides in the world – the voyage will be nothing short of perfection. Gently gliding across the shimmering navy waters, you will cross the paths of many iconic points of interest and take in the myriad of landscape and seascape scenes that will present themselves on the way before you draw nearer the remarkable sounds hugging the coastline of Picton.
Picton - The Fruits of a Labor of Love
Picton is positioned in one of New Zealand’s most majestic destinations, a scenery composed of rolling olive-green hills brushing a twinkling blue coastal sea. But even more so, beyond the bay lies a countryside veiled in vegetation where life flourishes uninterrupted by the spoils of man. Today, you will venture to these bewitching parts of Picton to relish the prestigious wines produced at elite estates hemmed into the illustrious hills. From wine tasting to chocolate nibbling, you will take delight in the delicacies prepared in the mesmerizing hills of Picton.
Christchurch - Gorgeous Seascapes along the Kaikoura Coastline
After breakfast this morning, you will make your way to Christchurch along the impressive Kaikoura coastline. Zigzagging along the tarred road the hugs the coast, you may catch glimpses of endemic birdlife hovering overhead and singing from the trees flanking the road, or even New Zealand fur seals, which may lie lazily sunbathing on boulders jutting out of the sea. Dubbed one of New Zealand’s prime whale-watching towns, you may spot them swimming beyond the shores before continuing to your decadent accommodation in Christchurch.
Aoraki - Alpine Discoveries from Soaring Heights
Tuck into a sumptuous breakfast spread before packing up your things and continuing your New Zealand tour from Christchurch to Mount Cook. Making your way to the icy mountains of Mount Cook, you will pass through the bewildering golden landscapes of the Canterbury Plains, a stark contrast to the scenes that await you in Mount Cook. AS you approach your destination, these vistas will give way to hills topped with snow rising to meet the clouds, and you will admire these alpine panoramas from a private helicopter shortly after arriving.
Queenstown - Refuge on the Banks of Lake Wakatipu
Beginning your journey away from the alpine summits of Mount Cook, you will transfer through the lakeside town of Twizel towards the Lindis Pass. From there, continue on to Gibbston Valley wine region before arriving in Queenstown. As you approach Queenstown, the towering crests of the Remarkables Mountains will come into view and vistas of Lake Wakatipu will flow beneath these mighty peaks. Here, alongside the tranquil waters of the lake, you will find refuge in a boutique accommodation fringing its banks.
Queenstown - All that Queenstown has to Offer
Queenstown, the adventure capital of New Zealand, is yours to explore freely on the twelfth day of your vacation. There are several activities to partake in during the day, each offering a way to discover the natural beauty circling the destination and delve into the culture sweeping its spirited districts. Whether you wish to zip across the gleaming waters of the lake on a jet boat weaving past the looming jagged cliffs or settle in at a Michelin-starred restaurant serving palate-pleasing delicacies, there is something for everyone to enjoy in Queenstown.
Queenstown - The Wonders of the Milford Sound
Beyond being beautiful in and of itself, Queenstown is also a gateway to the iconic Milford Sound of New Zealand. To witness this incredible geological phenomenon, you will hover into the sky onboard a private helicopter and swoon over the surroundings with a birds-eye view. As a result of tremendous rainfall battering this region throughout the year, an environmental exhibition of mossy rocks, dense rainforest, and vast rivers await those you eagerly take to the skies to witness the majestic natural wonders of the Milford Sound.
Queenstown - Luxurious Memories of Your Travels
As day breaks and your last day is upon you, you may enjoy it slowly while taking in the surrounding environmental beauty carpeting Queenstown from your balcony. Shortly after relishing a mouth-watering breakfast alongside views of the glimmering lake, you will pack your belongings and meet your private transfer. You will be taken to the international airport where you will board your flight headed home and say your last goodbyes to the wondrous country of New Zealand. Until next time, you will return home with many marvelous memories of your luxurious travels.

5 jaw-dropping luxury stays in New Zealand
Mar 18, 2022 • 6 min read
Enjoy a panoramic valley view from behind a mirrored glass wall at The Lindis luxury lodge in New Zealand © Shaun Jeffers
Yes it has pristine wilderness, vibrant culture, and super-friendly locals, but did you know New Zealand is also blessed with some of the world’s best accommodation? Aotearoa’s luxury lodges offer not only security and privacy: guests get exclusive access to unique experiences such as horse-riding in alpine meadows, heli-skiing and fly-fishing on wild rivers.
As tourism green shoots appear, it's expected that travelers will be more discerning about where (and how) they vacation. For many who've been stuck at home for a couple of years now, splurging on luxury accommodation is a more attractive proposition in the new era, for lots of reasons.
Often these unique places to stay offer greater privacy, sharing with fewer (and sometimes no other) guests. Some are self-catering, or catering is included on-site by the hosts or a private chef. Plus, holidaymakers in the post-Covid travel era may want to stay in one place and enjoy the best New Zealand has to offer in the local area rather than moving around constantly.
New Zealand is blessed with many unique accommodations, these is just a selection of some of the best .
Stay in glamorous tree houses at Hapuku Lodge in Kaikōura
On the South Island in the vicinity of whale-watching hub Kaikōura, Hapuku Lodge has five boutique "tree houses" dotted among the branches of its Kanuka grove. Tree houses may sound rustic, but these come with luxurious deep baths, fireplaces to stay cozy in winter, and epic views of Kaikōura’s dramatic mountains. They are an excellent option for families, as a separate bedroom gives parents private space, and families time together away from the main lodge.
The "kai" in Kaikōura means "food" (Kaikōura translates from Māori "meal of crayfish") and food is also one of the other major draws at Hapuku Lodge. Naturally, the seasonal three-course menu includes local crayfish (tenderly-grilled with chilli, horseradish & lime...) but venison is also a speciality: Hapuku Lodge is set on a deer farm. Produce from the kitchen garden is complemented by regional suppliers, local farmers and fishermen.
Golf lovers and birdwatchers should head to Cape Kidnappers
An altogether different experience awaits you at Cape Kidnappers in the Hawke’s Bay region. Part of a three-resort collection owned by the Robertson family, Cape Kidnappers was voted the number one resort hotel in Australia and New Zealand by Travel + Leisure readers in 2019 and 2020.
This property is open to the public (pre-booked only) who can visit to dine, spa, or play golf. Residents are housed in one of several separate “cottages” (in truth as large as your average three-bedroom family home) set apart and overlooking the golf course and the ocean. The rooms are spacious, with an airy, Cape Cod feel — unsurprising given its American providence. You can contemplate the connections across the Pacific while relaxing over cocktails with a view, or swimming in the infinity pool.
Cape Kidnappers is also a working farm, and the craggy cape (Te Kauwae-a-Māui) is home to a rare gannet colony, accessible on a 4WD safari from the lodge. The cape gets its name from an incident in 1769, when the local Māori seized Taiata, a 12-year-old crew member of Captain Cook’s Endeavour, because they believed he was being held by the explorers against his will. A rescue or a kidnapping? It depends on how you look at it!
Visually arresting architecture awaits you at Acacia Cliffs Lodge
Nestled in the treed hills above Lake Taupō , Acacia Cliffs Lodge stands apart for its stunning architecture. Spacious and comfortable, it can be hired exclusively, or shared by up to eight guests in four carpeted bedrooms with dreamy super-king beds. An on-site chef delivers breakfasts and additional hospitality packages are available. The other prime reason to stay is the location, which offers so much more than memorable views.
Taupō is the small centre of a region packed with some of the North Island’s top attractions. From here you can access Tongariro National Park, famous for alpine hiking through cinematic terrain ( Lord of the Rings fans know what we’re talking about); scenic cruises to the Ngatoroirangi Mine Bay Māori rock carvings; trout fishing on Lake Taupō; cycling and mountain-biking adventures; and geothermal hot springs in which to wind down at the end of the day.
Beyond the natural beauty, Taupō is strong on culture and art as well. Significant pa (fortified villages) of the local iwi (tribes), Ngati Tuwharetoa, are close by. Book on a foraging tour with Māori locals, pop into the museum and art galleries, or time your visit for the annual street-art festival Graffiato , New Zealand’s longest running.
Blend into the landscape this Ahuriri Valley luxury resort
You can plant yourself in the middle of the pristine Ahuriri Valley in New Zealand's South Island, staying at one of the pods at The Lindis in Canterbury. The pods are a stone’s throw from the main lodge, harmoniously-designed to blend into the landscape. Each 18-square-meter pod immerses you in a near-panoramic view of the valley from behind mirrored-glass walls. Although you won’t want to leave this incredible accommodation, stays can include once-in-a-lifetime experiences like heli-touring Fiordland and the Southern Alps; fly-fishing rarely-fished rivers; or horseback-riding through streams and fields in the valley.
The Lindis is the flagship property of four outstanding New Zealand luxury stays owned by the one hospitality group. There’s also Chalet New Zermatt near Queenstown ; Paroa Bay winery; villas near Russell up in the winterless Bay of Islands ; and their latest addition, Mt Isth-mus near Otago’s Lake Hāwea which opened in 2020.
Arrive by helicopter at Minaret Station
Next on this whistle stop tour of New Zealand’s world-class luxury lodges is Minaret Station . Located at the head of a glacial valley on the western shores of Lake Wanaka , it is only accessible by helicopter. This glorious remoteness means most activities -- such as skiing, guided hunting and mountain-biking -- are also helicopter-enabled. If you prefer to skip the adrenaline activities and simply relax, there are walks and cycle-rides in the valley, or you can simply hunker down at the lodge playing board games by the fire.
Accounting for its unique combination of exclusivity with down-to-earth Kiwi friendliness, Minaret Station is also a working high-country farm, raising deer, sheep and cattle. Caring for the environment is taken seriously here, as it is by most New Zealanders . To keep its footprint light, Minaret Station uses hydroelectricity from a nearby waterfall, and recycles as much as possible, reducing the amount of waste that needs to be transported back out of the valley.
As Tourism New Zealand Premium & Partnerships Manager, Pauline Dwight explains: “ Kaitiakitanga , or care for people and place, is deeply-rooted in New Zealand, and we look forward to inviting international visitors back to enjoy our environment and our luxury experiences as soon as we can.”
This breathtaking alpine location deep in a valley on New Zealand’s South Island is about as far away from the worries of the world as you can get. Luxuriating in a hot tub on the deck of your private chalet, enjoying the finest of New Zealand’s incredible cuisine and hospitality, is possibly one of the best ways to enjoy this blessed and inspiring country.

how we work
Since 2004, Amazing New Zealand Itineraries has built up an extensive network and associated discounted rates from accommodation suppliers and excursion providers around New Zealand. This means that your personalised itinerary will often work out far cheaper than doing it yourself. So not only are we saving you time in planning a unique New Zealand experience, we are saving you money too. In our experience, itineraries that are replicated through direct booking methods, often result in higher costs and minimal to no support should any problems arise.
The price for a personalised itinerary is FREE.
At Amazing New Zealand Itineraries, we earn our income from the commissions paid to us by each supplier and excursion provider, meaning there are no additional fees or percentage increases on top of pricing within a booking.
Creating the perfect itinerary may take many adjustments or additions, as necessary, so communication is key. Once your itinerary is perfected, we require a 10% deposit to then proceed with the reservations on your behalf. Once the final costs have been confirmed, we will require the remaining balance within 60 days of your arrival in New Zealand.

The ultimate New Zealand adventure for all types of traveller
N ew Zealand is magnificent. Who doesn’t yearn to visit this Land of the Long White Cloud, with its riotous geology, movie-set looks, scrumptious wines and opportunities for adventure?
Be you foodie, fantasy fan, hiker, biker, birder, backpacker, retiree, culture buff or adrenalin-junkie, the country is likely near the top of your bucket list.
But it’s also on the other side of the globe – and a big time, money and carbon commitment. Chances are, you won’t go twice (well, never say never…). And if you are going to go, you want to do it right.
You don’t want to risk returning from your once-in-a-lifetime trip and being asked ‘Oh, did you do such-and-such?’, realising too late that your dream holiday was actually missing something even more extraordinary.
For starters, allow time. “You are travelling a long way so ideally you need a minimum of three to four weeks,” says John Lightwood, director of country specialist Silver Fern Holidays ( silverfernholidays.com ).
“As a rule of thumb for first-timers, spend a third of your time on North Island, two thirds on South Island – the South has 10 national parks, to the North’s three. And allow two to three nights in each location to give you time to explore, and reduce your packing and unpacking.”
While New Zealand isn’t huge – just a little bigger than Britain – trying to cram too much in will mean less satisfying experiences.
Then figure out what you’re into. There are a bunch of obvious “must-dos”, from marvellous Milford Sound to mud-bathing in Rotorua. But there are also more left field options, plus experiences you can only have in New Zealand, like paddling a Maori waka (canoe) or running down the side of a volcano ( kaitiaki.co.nz/guided-tours ).
“New Zealand is a ‘wow’ destination, offering an abundance of ‘wow’ experiences to match,” says Emma Maidment, senior product executive for New Zealand at Audley ( audleytravel.com ). “But we encourage clients to consider the alternatives to the ‘headline’ opportunities, seeking out elusive, more private experiences, whether that’s taking on an overlooked walking track, embarking on one-on-one tours with private guides or simply choosing to focus time in a region that receives less footfall.”
You won’t be able to do everything. But you can, with a little thinking outside the box, take a trip you’ll be bragging about for years. Or at least until you plan your second “once-in-a-lifetime” NZ adventure…
For walkers and cyclists
Hiking is a must. You could tick-off one of NZ’s 10 official Great Walks – the Milford and Routeburn Tracks are most popular, and need booking in advance ( doc.govt.nz ). Or be first to bag the 11th, the Hump Ridge Track, opening 2024.
But there are many other options. For instance, the Hollyford Track is a 56km foray into untouched Fiordland; do it independently, or via the award-winning Hollyford Wilderness Experience ( hollyfordtrack.com ), a guided hike with smart lodges, gourmet food and jetboat transfers. Audley offers a 20-night New Zealand trip, with the Hollyford Experience, from £8,300pp, including flights (01993 838380; audleytravel.com ).
Alternatively, do lots of little hikes. North Island’s Tongariro Alpine Crossing is touted as the world’s best day walk. Or try the Kaikoura Coast Track, developed by local farmers; Roy’s Peak Track, for dazzling Lake Wanaka views; or sections of longer trails like the waterside Queen Charlotte Track. Macs Adventure offers a 25-day tramp-packed Best of New Zealand tour from £3,975pp, excluding flights (0141 530 5452; macsadventure.com ).
Cyclists are equally spoiled. The NZ government has invested in bike trails to encourage tourism to rural regions. Today there are 23 off-road Great Rides ( nzcycletrail.com ), ranging from the easy Whakarewarewa Forest route to the Old Ghost Road in South Island’s wild west.
The ultimate challenge? The Tour Aotearoa, a 3,000km top-to-toe bike-packing trail. “It’s not only a once-in-a-lifetime experience, but actively helps set aside land for nature,” says Responsible Travel’s Sarah Faith. “By 2012, along just one section, mountain-biking was five times more valuable to the local economy than logging.” Responsible Travel offers a 41-day Tour Aotearoa ride from £8,924pp, excluding flights (01273 823700; responsibletravel.com ).
For luxury lovers
You can add extra bragging rights by upping your accommodation’s location and exclusivity. For instance, take the PurePod network, minimalist glass cabins marooned in wild spots; two new pods have opened in Central Otago, overlooking mountains, vineyards and gold mining history, with easy access to the excellent Lake Dunstan cycle trail (from NZ$690/£337pn; purepods.com ).
Or consider combining some classics: “From December, luxury hotel brand Rosewood will be at the helm of an iconic trilogy of NZ lodges – Kauri Cliffs (Bay of Islands), Cape Kidnappers (Hawke’s Bay) and Matakauri (Queenstown),” says James Bell of Turquoise Holidays, which offers a 12-night trip, with suites at all three prestige properties, from £18,950pp, including flights (01494 678400; turquoiseholidays.co.uk ).
For off-beat luxe, book a wilderness lodge. Just opened, Te Karaka offers insight into a working livestock station, with fabulous farm-to-table food, just 95km from Auckland (from NZ$440/£215pn; tekarakalodge.co.nz ). More remote, Eleven Cedar Lodge offers unrivalled views of, and access to, the Southern Alps; new this season are a range of heli-adventures, from hiking to wine-tasting (from NZ$3,260/£1,591pn; elevenexperience.com/cedar-lodge ).
Indeed, helicopters are a surefire way of getting where most don’t. Look out for Kaimanawa Alpine Adventures, launching 2024, which will offer fly-in/fly-out-only heli-glamping in Central North Island ( kaa.co.nz ).
For all-round luxe, Cazenove & Loyd’s new 16-night Rivers Deep, Mountains High trip is full of exclusive lodges and experiences, from a catch-and-cook Kaikoura fishing trip to a heritage yacht cruise with local guardians on Queen Charlotte Sounds. From £13,580pp, excluding flights (020 7384 2332; cazloyd.com ).
For culture vultures
Meeting Maori is key to understanding New Zealand, and worthwhile experiences include learning about the Treaty of Waitangi in Northland and tucking into a hangi feast. However, there are other ways to gain insights.
For instance, take a wellness journey at Wai Ariki, a new spa in Rotorua, built around traditional Maori healing practices (from NZ$155/£76; wai-ariki.co.nz ). Or head into the Kaimanawa Ranges with a Maori outdoorsman ( kaiwaho.co.nz ).
Alternatively, deep-dive into a specific region. Discover the World offers a 13-night self-drive to the East Cape, an uncommercialised area rich in Maori heritage. “It’s scattered with Maori communities, traditional marae and quirky pubs,” says Discover the World’s Liz Lunnon. “My highlight is St Mary’s Church, Tikitiki – as well as its intricate Maori carvings, penguins nest under the floor.” The trip costs from £2,071pp, excluding flights (01737 428406; discover-the-world.com ).
City fan? Explore deeper with Fine Art Tours, which runs private special-interest walks in Wellington, Christchurch, Auckland and Dunedin (from NZ$330/£161pp; finearttours.nz ). And don’t miss Napier, the world’s best-preserved Art Deco town. The Art Deco Trust runs walking tours (from NZ$29.50/£14.40pp; artdeconapier.com ), or catch the Art Deco Festival, returning for the first time in four years in 2024 (15-18 February; artdecofestival.co.nz ).
Popular culture more your thing? Head to Hobbiton in Hamilton-Waikato, where the new Bagshot Row experience (opened December) lets Lord of the Rings lovers venture inside a Hobbit Hole (NZ$120/£59pp; hobbitontours.com ). Stubborn Mule’s 15-day Highlights of New Zealand trip, a family-friendly combination of Hobbiton, Maori hakas, geysers, glowworms and more, suits all culture levels. From £5,050pp, including flights (01728 752751; stubbornmuletravel.com ).
For foodies
Succulent lamb and seafood, artisanal cheese, exceptional wine – dining across NZ is a delight. But experiences to really brag about? Start with a Big Foody Tastebud Tour of Auckland for guided grazing around the suburbs (NZ$265/£129pp; thebigfoody.com ).
Then book a place at the Chef’s Table at Blue Duck Station: a two-hour bush safari is followed by multi-course feast with views of Tongariro National Park (NZ$495/£242pp; blueduckstation.co.nz ). Dine at North Canterbury’s Black Estate, 2023 Winery Restaurant of the Year ( blackestate.co.nz ).
And, for utter opulence, helicopter to the Bad Decision, a mountaintop whisky hut in Aoraki Mount Cook National Park (from NZ$$2,080/£1,015 for four; mackenziehelicopters.com ).
Travelling on NZ’s scenic rail network can be tasty, too. The Great Journeys Scenic Plus Experience, which includes an open-air viewing carriage and gourmet food and drink, is currently available on the TranzAlpine train (Christchurch-Greymouth), but launches on the Coastal Pacific (Picton-Kaikoura) in December and on the Northern Explorer (Auckland-Wellington) in May 2024 ( greatjourneysnz.com ).
NZ’s wine regions – from Auckland’s Waiheke Island to Hawke’s Bay, the “12th Great Wine Capital of the World” – are deserving of dedicated itineraries. Inspiring Travel offers a 16-night Highlights of New Zealand Wineries trip, which samples olive oil on Waiheke, cycles Marlborough’s vineyards and delves into the country’s biggest wine cave. From £7,755pp, including flights (01244 729748; inspiringtravel.co.uk ).
Or foodies might fancy Wexas’s 23-night Culinary Highlights tour, which links Auckland and Queenstown via foodie hotels, local producers, farmers’ markets and culinary tours, from £10,120pp, including flights (020 7838 5892; wexas.com ).
For nature buffs
To some extent or another, everyone comes to New Zealand to be immersed in its magisterial great outdoors. And certain experiences are classic, from whale-watching off Kaikoura (a 95% chance of spotting cetaceans) to meeting kiwis at Wellington’s Zealandia Eco-sanctuary. But why not up your game?
For truly brilliant birding, boat over to Mou Waho Island nature reserve, home to many native species, including the flightless weka, and Arethusa Pool, a lake within an island in a lake, perfect for a dip (NZ$204/£100pp; ecowanaka.co.nz ). Or add on Stewart Island, the country’s lesser-visited third isle, for a chance to see wild southern brown kiwi in pristine nature.
Wildlife Worldwide’s immersive 23-day South Island Self-drive visits Stewart as well as magical Doubtful Sound, the Otago Peninsula (spotting rare New Zealand sea lion) and the Catlins, home to spectacular sunsets and mohua birds. From £6,395pp, including flights (01962 302086; wildlifeworldwide.com ).
Prefer astronomy to avifauna? Even amateurs will be dazzled by Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve. Pimp the experience by star-spotting while soaking in hot pools (NZ$119/£58pp; tekapostargazing.co.nz ) or booking Billion Star Dining (NZ$270/£132pp; mtcookretreat.nz ), a seasonal four-course feast followed by galaxy-gazing at the Pukaki Wine Cellar Observatory.
Or, for extra insight into the roots of this rambunctious land, join New Scientist Discovery Tours’ two new eight-day trips, which explore the volcanoes, glaciers and geothermal gasps of North and South island respectively, guided by expert geologists. From £3,050pp, excluding flights (0203 3089 917; newscientist.com ).
For adventure junkies
There’s an air of adventure in New Zealand that may entice you to do crazy things – Zip-lining! Zorbing! Bungy! – that you wouldn’t dream of undertaking elsewhere. It’s easy to secure bragging rights if you’re willing to leap 134m into a canyon attached only to a piece of rope (NZ$345/£168pp; bungy.co.nz ) or take on the world’s highest commercially rafted waterfall (NZ$142/£69pp; kaitiaki.co.nz ).
Slightly less extreme, G Adventures offers an active North Island Multisport small-group trip, which packs in kayaking, jet-boating, caving, rafting, biking and hiking from £1,629pp, excluding flights (0207 313 6953; gadventures.com ).
According to Jacques Cousteau, Northland’s Poor Knights Islands marine reserve is one of the planet’s top five diving sites. Learn to scuba, do a try dive or simply snorkel over the kelp forests, caves, rays and wrasses here (try-dives from NZ$379/£185pp; diving.co.nz ).
If money is really no object, try it to the next level – new for 2024 is Black Tomato’s pioneering five-night charter around this remote archipelago aboard a sustainable yacht, in search of the world’s best dives. From £164,000 for eight, excluding flights (0207 426 9888; blacktomato.com ).
Or come to ski. New Zealand has super slopes that offer a summer fix for northern hemisphere snow-hounds. Heli-skiing options give access to perfect powder, too ( newzealand.com/uk/heliskiing ). For a hassle-free intro, try Intrepid’s seven-day small-group South Island Snow Safari, which hits the finest slopes across six different mountains from Christchurch to Queenstown, with expert crew. From £1,570pp, excluding flights (0808 274 5111; intrepidtravel.com ).
How to get there: Several airlines – including Qatar ( qatarairways.com ), Emirates ( emirates.com ), Cathay Pacific ( cathaypacific.com ) and Delta ( delta.com ) – fly from the UK to New Zealand (usually connecting in LA, Singapore or Gulf states), with returns from £666.
When to go: December-February is peak summer, when it’s warmest and busiest. Shoulder months (October-November, March-April) are cooler but quieter and cheaper. May-September is coldest; some trails and attractions close, but ski slopes are open.

Glamping in New Zealand – The 12 BEST Spots (2024)
Diving into New Zealand’s mind-blowingly beautiful wilderness is something that most travellers dream of. Waking up to a chorus of native birds as you soak in the lush landscapes around you… it doesn’t sound too bad, right?
However, pitching a tent on the hard ground, laying down your paper-thin mattress and nestling into a scratchy sleeping bag isn’t for everyone. Luckily, glamping has exploded on the scene and is providing all those self-diagnosed non-campers out there with a luxurious camping alternative.
And guys, New Zealand’s glamping is on another level. I’m so excited to share some of these stays with you. From outdoor bathtubs and wood-fired pizza ovens to INSANE views and ridiculously comfy beds – the attention to detail in these places is incredible.
As The Broke Backpacker’s resident Kiwi, I’ve been tasked with finding us the BEST glamping in New Zealand . I’ve focused my love and addition on sourcing the crème de la crème of luxury tents, yurts and domes across the country. I have absolutely no doubt you will fall in love with these places, just like I have.
So, let’s dive into the best glamping in the north and south islands of New Zealand.
The Broke Backpacker is supported by you . Clicking through our links may earn us a small affiliate commission, and that's what allows us to keep producing free content 🙂 Learn more .
What is Glamping?
What to expect from glamping in new zealand, the top 12 spots for glamping in new zealand, best glamping in the north island, best glamping in the south island, faqs about glamping in new zealand, what to pack for new zealand, final thoughts on glamping in new zealand.
Glamping comes from glamorous camping . Also known as luxury camping or boutique camping. It’s built around the desire to get off-grid and into nature without having to completely rough it in a tiny tent on a shitty mattress.
Glamping has taken off all over the world, you can find them in some pretty magical remote spots across the globe. I love the concept of glamping as it encourages more people to get out into nature – even if that means doing it with hot running water, a comfy bed and a hot tub…
Essentially, if you want to stay amongst nature without having to rough it too much , glamping is for you.
If you’re going to try out the glamping lifestyle, New Zealand is THE place to do it. Getting off the beaten track when travelling in New Zealand will offer up some of the most incredible views on the planet…
Imagine then being able to wake up to those views from the comfort of your own comfy bed. It’s a big yes from me.
The level of glamorous completely depends on your interests and of course, your budget. There are some pretty incredible glamping spots to stay in New Zealand that cover all budgets – including yurts, domes and some of the biggest tents you’ve ever seen.
New Zealand’s landscape is pretty diverse. If you go glamping in the North Island it’s likely you’ll find yourself nestled into nature, close to a beach or some farmland. Whereas, the South Island is hugely mountainous, so you’ll often find yourself with some pretty majestic views.
We’ve tested countless backpacks over the years, but there’s one that has always been the best and remains the best buy for adventurers: the broke backpacker-approved Osprey Aether and Ariel series.
Want more deetz on why these packs are so damn perfect? Then read our comprehensive review for the inside scoop!
From luxury safari tents to incredible domes, New Zealand has blessed us with loads of options when it comes to glamping. You’ll find them nestled into some of the most beautiful and remote areas of the country. But never fear, I’m here to uncover their locations and share with you the best of the best.
Whether you’re looking to go glamping in the north island or the south, I’ve got you covered. Let’s dive into the best glamping in New Zealand.
Dreamscape Glamping Waikanae | Best Overall Glamping in New Zealand
Dreamscape Glamping in Waikanae is what all my childhood dreams are made of. It reminds me of a massive comfy, fort that you could nestled in and stay forever. Located on a hill overlooking Kapiti Island and the sea, you will be blessed every day with a sunset over the horizon. So, grab yourself a local wine and settle in, this will be a moment to remember.
This glamping spot comes with a wood-fire oven!! How cool is that? You can whip up a pizza, or a roast and enjoy it on the terrace overlooking the view. Not only that but you’ll also be able to enjoy outdoor baths, an outdoor fire and your own private bar.
Inside your snuggly tent, you’ll find a luxurious king-sized bed, designer chairs and a kitchenette. If you think the photos of this place look cool, I’d say they don’t even do it the justice it serves. Visiting this place HAS to be one of the coolest things to do in New Zealand .
Stylish Glamping Tepee | Best Budget Glamping in New Zealand
If you want to plonk yourself in a teepee, travel into the wilderness but still just be 5 minutes from Matakana Village – I’ve found your match! These glamping tepees refer to themselves as stylish and that is exactly what they are. They have been carefully designed and fitted out with quality beds, linen, shower towels and (my favourite part) fairy lights!
Surrounded by native trees, you can’t help but unwind, relax and reconnect with nature. Each tepee has its own small deck with chairs for you to relax on and soak in the views. There is a shared bathroom and lounge just a short distance away.
The Enchanted Retreat Luxury Glamping | Over-the-Top Luxury Glamping in New Zealand
Located in the beautiful Havelock North, this is the ULTIMATE glamping in New Zealand for the non-camper. This glamping spot is super modern and oozes with luxury, however, it has disguised itself as a “tent” amongst nature. This counts as camping in New Zealand … right?
The views are out-of-this-world amazing, looking over lush green New Zealand bush and hills… and don’t even get me started about the sunset. A glass of wine in hand watching our big ball of fire fall behind the horizon – pure bliss.
Inside the “tent”, the stylish decor and design are the perfect mix of modernity and comfort. Relax in the outdoor bath, roast some marshmallows around the fire (really get into the glamping spirit) or just chill out on the deck and soak in the view. This spot is easily some of the best glamping in the north island.
Drift Off Grid Luxury Eco Glamping | Most Romantic Glamping in New Zealand
Drift Off Grid Luxury Glamping in Tarakohe, Tasman is the best of the best when it comes to glamping in New Zealand. Blending modern comforts with a camping twist. Nestled up high, you’ll have a bloody spectacular view across the sea and rolling hills in the distance. But don’t worry, you won’t have to hike your way down to the beach as you get your own buggy to drive yourself down with.
If you’re wondering just how glamorous this glamping spot is, I’ll just tell you this much… the bathroom has a double shower, floor heating, white fluffy towels and bathrobes. If that doesn’t set the scene, I don’t know what will. This spot takes glamping to the next level.
Whether you want to head out to explore the area or just relax in your own slice of paradise, this place has you covered. With a kitchenette and a Webber grill (yep, no shitty BBQs around here), you can whip up your own dinner while you soak in the view. The hosts have the fridge stock for you so that you’re all sorted with a delicious breakfast to start the day too.
Here at The Broke Backpacker , we love freedom! And there’s no freedom as sweet (and CHEAP) as camping around the world.
We’ve been camping on our adventures for over 10 years, so take it from us: the MSR HUBBA HUBBA is the best damn tent for adventuring…
Here are a few more of my favourite spots for glamping in New Zealand’s North Island. Get your notepad out, buddy.
The Yurt Wai Rua – Whangarei, Northland
Tucked away in Northland, this Yurt provides the perfect rustic glamping in Whangarei. Nestled into nature, the tranquil setting of this glamping spot allows you to soak in the lush green views and enjoy the sound of native birds singing away. The yurt is SUPER cosy – with a big double bed, a fireplace and warm fluffy rugs.
It’s the extra touches from the hosts that make this glamping spot stand out – they provide flashlights for the night, a woodstove for chilly nights and ample farm-fresh supplies for breakfast. There is a kitchen available to use to cook whenever you need.
Plus, they have an outdoor swimming pool (yep, this is glamping guys!) and a BBQ area too.
Te Kouma Heights Glamping – Manaia, Waikato
Travelling off the beaten track and right into rural farmland! This EPIC safari tent provides incredible views across the ocean and the Te Kouma Harbour. Feel the sea breeze on your face and enjoy a morning coffee on the deck, take it aaaall in.
The Safari tent sounds rugged, right? Well, I assure you, it’s more than comfortable. Powered with solar energy, a LUXURY king-sized bed and a full kitchen – you’ll feel right at home here. You’ll also be blessed with two claw baths to soak in the views, or just jump in the shower and enjoy the equally amazing view from there.
The lovely hosts let you roam around, walk up the hill and enjoy all of the surrounding property. As the tent is on farmland, they provide a 4×4 vehicle for you to drive yourself around (pretty cool!) But if you’re not confident in driving, they can drop you off/ pick you up. This glamping spot in the north island is 10/10.
Raglan Rural Retreat – Raglan, Waikato
If you’re going to get off the beaten track anywhere, Raglan is a pretty sweet place to do it. And this Raglan Rural Retreat is just the place! It provides the classic camping experience: sitting back (glass of wine in hand), toasting marshmallows around the fire pit or relaxing in the spa pool while marvelling at the stars above.
However, when it’s time to go back, you won’t be trudging back to your small tent with a tiny mattress on the floor. Instead, you’ll be doing it in true glamping style. Your luxurious glamping tent comes with two bedrooms (each with a queen-size bed), a chill-out space, a couch and a kitchen. It’s like a little home!
Located on a tranquil rural farm, your only neighbours will be the friendly alpacas next door. Although you’ll feel like you’ve been picked up from the busy world and dropped into a secluded paradise… you’re actually less than 10 minutes from Raglans town centre.
Oakridge Glamping – Rotorua, Bay of Plenty
Although there are so many aspects to Oakridge Glamping that are INCREDIBLE, my favourite part about staying here is the star-gazing, it is out-of-this-world (literally). If Rotorua pulls through with a clear night, you’ll be blessed with a shit load of shiny stars that will be etched into your mind long after your trip.
Oakridge provides the ultimate glamping experience with the perfect mix of adventure while providing all the home comforts you could need. This glamping in Rotorua offers a cosy fireplace, an epic outdoor bathtub overlooking serene views and a bangin’ BBQ set up.
Not only that but your hosts are wonderful. They have horses and two friendly labradors – Baxter and Benson – who add even more sparkle to your stay.
Drink water from ANYWHERE. The Grayl Geopress is the worlds leading filtered water bottle protecting you from all manner of waterborne nasties.
Single-use plastic bottles are a MASSIVE threat to marine life. Be a part of the solution and travel with a filter water bottle. Save money and the environment!
We’ve tested the Geopress rigorously from the icy heights of Pakistan to the tropical jungles of Bali, and can confirm: it’s the best water bottle you’ll ever buy!
Here are a few more of my favourite spots for glamping in the South Island of New Zealand:
Glamping yurt / “hole in the rock” accommodation – Cape Foulwind, West Coast
Amongst some of the best glamping in the south island is this Yurt near Cape Faulwind. From your deck, you will be spoilt with beautiful views across the rocky landscape of the west coast. Mere steps from the beach, you can walk down to Hole in the Rock Beach or walk a few minutes further to join the Cape Foulwind walkway. There are plenty of adventures to be had when staying here.
The yurt itself is an absolute dream, it’s a stylish round room with a 5m window to capture all of the incredible views. After a day of exploring, you can crash in a queen-sized bed (or if you’re a group of four, you can sleep on the fold-out double sofa bed). Surrounded by lush lawn and cosy bean bags, it’s the perfect spot to relax and watch the sunset.
With your own kitchenette, you can whip up your own meals at your leisure. Or, if you’re up for an outing, you can head to the Star Tavern just two minutes away – a great spot for a feed and a beer. If you’re after a place to stop the charts on your South Island roadie , this is it.
Big Sky Yurts and BBQ – French Farm, Canterbury
Ok, friends, this is the creme da la creme. The best of the best. These guys don’t muck around when it comes to glamping. Not only do they offer beautiful wool-insulated yurks, with cosy queen beds that overlook the Akaroa Habour BUT they also feed you up with some of the best food ever.
Included in your stay at the eco-farm stay, Big Sky, you’ll enjoy a three-course slow-cooked BBQ dinner. Yep, you can’t really beat that. Smokie D is your chef and he whips up a damn good meal.
Located in the perfect spot to enjoy New Zealand’s hiking tracks , mountain biking, and beaches – it’s an adventurer’s heaven. You won’t get bored staying here.
Cross Hill Glamping – Lake Hawea, Otago
If you’re on the fence about this whole glamping thing – can it really be that luxurious to go camping? YES, it can. If this sounds like you – Cross Hill Glamping in Lake Hawea is the spot for you. Cross Hill has everything and I mean everything you could want in a hotel room… except it’s in a dome in the middle of nature.
From the divine super-king bed, soft sheets, heated mattress pad, gas fireplace, quality towns AND dressing gowns, lovely toiletries and so much more. You will be living like a queen in a dome. The vibe is serene and provides the perfect place to unwind.
Breakfast is served daily in a lovely communal area. If you’re up for meeting other guests – this is a great time to mix and mingle with your fellow dome dwellers and others from the campground.
Valley Views Glamping – Kurow, Waitaki Valley
Picture a tent filled with fairy lights, soft faux fur rugs and a bed that rivals any luxury hotel. Not only that but an EPIC view across the valley that will absolutely blow your mind. Valley Views Glamping in Waitaki Valley does not disappoint.
Relax in a warm outdoor bath under the stars and relax with a local wine and watch the sunset from your deck. This glamping spot is the perfect spot to come if you want to detach from the busy world and unwind. Hidden down a dirt road and amongst lush, beautiful nature – you’ll feel completely off-grid.
The hosts are super welcoming to all their guests and provide a delicious FREE breakfast every morning. Including fresh eggs laid by their hens, bread, butter, spreads and fresh coffee. A dreamy start to the day.
Here’s what people usually ask about glamping in New Zealand… If you have any questions of your own, drop them in the comments below.
What is glamping?
Glamping comes from glamorous camping . Also known as luxury camping or boutique camping. It’s built around the desire to get off-grid and into nature without having to completely rough it in a small tent on a shitty mattress.
Is glamping in New Zealand expensive?
Yes, it can be as you are booking luxury camping. The price you pay will depend on your level of luxury and the season you book in. You can definitely find yourself some bargains… if you know where to look (and lucky for you, you’ve got my guide!)
Where is the most romantic glamping in New Zealand?
Sparks will be flying at Drift Off Grid Luxury Eco Glamping in Tarakohe, Tasman – whether you’re up for a sunset wine or to relax in the outdoor bathtubs together, you won’t be short of romance here.
What is the best glamping in New Zealand with a hot tub?
The best place to go glamping on the North Island with a hot tub is Raglan Rural Retreat . This epic glamping in Raglan offers the perfect place to relax. Chill out in the spa pool amongst New Zealand’s lush native bush, if you jump in at night, it’s the perfect spot for some stargazing.
Pants, socks, underwear, soap?! Take it from me, packing for an Airbnb stay is not always quite as straightforward as it seems. Working out what to bring and what to leave at home is an art I have perfected over many years.
Snoring dorm-mates can ruin your nights rest and seriously damage the hostel experience. This is why I always travel with a pack of decent ear plugs.
Hanging Laundry Bag
Trust us, this is an absolute game changer. Super compact, a hanging mesh laundry bag stops your dirty clothes from stinking, you don’t know how much you need one of these… so just get it, thank us later.
Sea To Summit Micro Towel
Hostel towels are scummy and take forever to dry. Microfibre towels dry quickly, are compact, lightweight, and can be used as a blanket or yoga mat if need be.
Monopoly Deal
Forget about Poker! Monopoly Deal is the single best travel card game that we have ever played. Works with 2-5 players and guarantees happy days.
Grayl Geopress Water Bottle
Always travel with a water bottle! They save you money and reduce your plastic footprint on our planet. The Grayl Geopress acts as a purifier AND temperature regulator. Boom!
Don’t Forget Your New Zealand Travel Insurance
Unfortunately, things can go wrong when you least expect it. This is why good travel insurance is essential before you head on your trip to New Zealand.
ALWAYS sort out your backpacker insurance before your trip. There’s plenty to choose from in that department, but a good place to start is Safety Wing .
They offer month-to-month payments, no lock-in contracts, and require absolutely no itineraries: that’s the exact kind of insurance long-term travellers and digital nomads need.
SafetyWing is cheap, easy, and admin-free: just sign up lickety-split so you can get back to it!
Click the button below to learn more about SafetyWing’s setup or read our insider review for the full tasty scoop.
As you can see, New Zealand does glamping bloody well. And as it should! We have some of the most incredible, remote spots in the world and it’s awesome that more and more travellers are being encouraged to experience it.
I hope that you managed to find your little remote slice of paradise amongst these luxury tents, yurts and domes. Or, has at least inspired you to get out into nature in whatever camping style is best for you.
If you’re still unsure as to the best glamping, I’d recommend staying at Dreamscape Glamping Waikanae . It’s nestled into the hills and provides some outstanding views. You’ll be staying in an epic, stylishly designed tent that offers a wood-fire oven, outdoor baths AND your own bar. Not bad, huh?
Wherever you decide, enjoy your time getting off-grid. Relax, unwind and enjoy!

Cycling NZ’s Tour Aotearoa: The best New Zealand cycle trail and Great Ride
Share this article
The Tour of Aotearoa spans 3000km, showcasing New Zealand’s scenic splendour. Photo / Mary Lambie
Designed to highlight the best of New Zealand’s Great Rides , cycling Tour Aotearoa is no small feat, especially on a cranky old bike at the grand age of 60, writes Mary Lambie
It’s sobering, the deals which are struck over a bottle of wine.
I found myself agreeing, a year ago, to ride the Tour of Aotearoa (TA) in March this year. My cloudy vision was of pedalling past bucolic pastures and crops, skirting around undulating hills and admiring distant maunga.
I didn’t think about rain and punctures, and the fact that I’d need to be scaling not skirting.
Thankfully there was no camping involved, but it would be unassisted (no electric bikes), and the target was Cape Reinga to Bluff in 30 days - 3000km.
We began as a hard core of four.
A couple from the UK (Fran and George), my old mate Aaron (Captain Fantastic) and me.
On day one at the Cape, we met Paul from Oz who we decided was such a good bloke we made him our fifth member.
All but one of us were 59, and about to turn the big 6 0. That inner voice that tells all of us to “get on your bike” had been a loud one, and the proof was to be in the pedalling. Could I still do this?

You can ride the TA any time and any way: north-south, south-north, you can drift off to the east coast too, even though the formal trail veers west down both motu. It incorporates our best cycle trail rides, heartland rides, and makes use of quiet country roads.
Some TA-ers do camp along the way, some use the credit card - staying in pubs, motels, hotels, and the occasional dodgy dive. You can ride the tour in 15 days if you’re mad keen, other people take months to do it.
To nail it in 30 days, which we intended, takes planning. You have to think hard about accommodation , tides, food supplies and the navigation of four bodies of water: Pouto Point to Helensville; a stretch of the Whanganui River; Cook Strait; and getting across Lake Wakatipu from Queenstown to Walter Peak.
Captain Fantastic produced the mother of all spread sheets with distances, timings, locations, and accommodation laid out for us. But he’d made no contingency plans for bad weather, mechanical maladies, and unforeseen sickness. His is a Type-A relentless approach, he’d keep riding, whatever obstacle presented itself.
We began with high hopes, rotating our legs and crossing our fingers. The route was loaded into our Garmins, our GPS trackers were on and in our paniers were copies of the Tour of Aotearoa Official Guide Handbook (written by the doyens of bikepacking, the Kennett brothers). We were as good to go as we could be.
Day one was diabolical. Ninety Mile Beach (it’s 72km actually but it feels like 720) was arduous, windy and hot. It’s hard riding on sand, which tends to dispel any joy you feel being beside the big blue ocean. We had a head wind and we averaged not much more than 14km/h. You can do the maths on how long it took us to struggle into Ahipara.
We went straight to the dairy for the most comforting, calorie-laden thick shake of my life. I decided then to make this ‘ Mary’s milkshake tour of NZ’, but as it turns out surprisingly few dairies now offer milkshakes. The other downside to beach riding is that the sand and salt water are disastrous for bikes: chains start rusting, sand clogs essential functions, and that requires more than a simple hosing down to clean and sort.
With the beach behind us, and in baking conditions, we rode through to Opononi the next day, and overnighted at the four-star Sands hotel before heading for Dargaville. Seven kilometres out from this (let’s be honest) underwhelming destination, three “Trail Angels” greeted us by their farm gate offering chilled water and watermelon.
They were siblings who had been tracking us on the GPS. They knew precisely when we would be passing. What a delight it was, and how wonderful they were. They told us stories of riders in front of us in varying states of disrepair. Some were thinking about going home already, others had mechanical problems. It didn’t seem to bode well, but the memory of the meeting was such a happy one.
By day four we had hit Auckland. I had to take a couple of days off the tour at this point because of pressing work commitments. Normal stresses do disappear on a bike, but they re-appear when texts arrive on the phone.
The section I missed I had done previously anyway, so I knew what my mates were in for: the flat Hauraki Rail Trail , the remote roads at the back of Mangakino, the glorious 80km Timber Trail and the muddy, gnarly single track alongside the Whanganui River. They sent me photos of mud which they were scraping thick inches off from their wheels every 50m or so. I became grateful for the pressing work commitments.
I reconnected with them a few days later in Ashhurst, the nice small town just north of Palmerston North. There’s a bit of climbing involved getting out of the Manawatū but the gigantic wind turbines are a welcome distraction from the grind, and then it’s pretty much plain sailing from Eketāhuna (great pub and food) through to Masterton.
We had a Top 10 sleepover in Martinborough, and then a very early start on day 16 to get over the Rimutaka rail trail summit in time to make Wellington for the 3pm ferry to Picton.
I was happy to be on the mainland. They say if you’re born there it feels like a homecoming each time, and I think that’s true.
The Picton to Nelson ride (day 17) includes the option of tackling the infamous Maungatapu Saddle. I didn’t, because I am sensible. I rode the road through the Rai Valley and Whangamoa.
The others, gripped by a zealous insanity, mostly pushed their bikes to the top of the saddle, experienced no view whatsoever, and then pushed their bikes down the other side. It’s seriously rocky and steep, and it required more than six hours of stamina. They were fitter than me, and believe me they were sore, unhappy and tired when we met up in Nelson that evening.
The next couple of days took us into hop growing country, through the 1.4km Spooners Rail Tunnel, and eventually into Reefton – home to the best baking in the country at the Broadway Tearooms and Bakery on the main drag. We had solo riders Greg and Vaughan in tow by now, making us a caravan of seven.
On day 22 we hit the mighty West Coast Wilderness Trail - arguably the best-maintained and accessible track of them all - which runs from Greymouth through to Ross (where it rained, rained a bit more, and then resumed raining). I got ticked off at ‘Cowboy Paradise’ by Mike, the unhospitable proprietor, for sheltering under an awning – to be fair he was under some stress having just been found guilty of a major underground bunker drug operation.
On the 24th day we pedalled from Harihari (so nice they named it twice, and surprisingly it has a school roll of 140) through to Franz Josef, crawling up two large peaks, and finally dropped down into Fox Glacier.
We had to share the road with large logging trucks and impatient drivers, and people in that brand of camper van with ‘Adventure before Dementia’ on the side. We had no choice. And the further south we went, the more road kill there was on the road, in varying stages of decay. Sad and gross.
With a week to go we were on the home stretch, and wear and tear on the bikes was starting to show. Greg’s ongoing gearing issues were taking a toll (he was down to two gears held together with number 8 wire), Vaughan kept getting punctures, Paul had spoke problems and Captain Fantastic’s bike was making weird noises. He ignored them. We were all relieved to reach Wānaka and have the bikes properly repaired.
Day 28 (Wānaka to Queenstown ) required surmounting the 1100m Crown Range, the highest point on the entire tour. The final couple of kilometres before the top saw me cycle so slowly I really felt like I was going backwards.
A pre-dawn boat trip the next morning took us across Wakatipu to Walter Peak Station, ahead of 70km of harsh gravel and through the Mavora Lakes (which was one of the many film locations for The Lord of the Rings ). Then it was a smooth ride from Mossburn to Lumsden.
We opted for an ungodly start time on our last day to make the finish by early afternoon, but it’s a very easy 120km, on pretty much sealed roads, through to Bluff, and its totemic AA sign indicating distances to places on the planet I’d never heard of, like Kumagaya and Suqian.
We had made it.
Yes, it’s hard, but also much better fun in retrospect than a big 60th birthday party with people making the usual remarks about how many years we have left. We have plenty.
If you can ride a bike, I seriously recommend you give it a go.
Don’t worry about how long you take.
As they say, it’s all about the journey, and you meet great people doing it.
