RBD's Soy Rebelde Tour: Everything we know about the reunion shows

RBD on the opening night of their Soy Rebelde Tour.

The red ties and blazers have officially come out now that RBD kicked off their reunion tour!

Dulce María, Christian Chávez, Anahí, Christopher von Uckermann and Maite Perroni took the stage on Aug. 25 at Sun Bowl Stadium in El Paso, Texas, to play their first concert in almost 15 years.

“I am so excited, I can’t believe it,” Dulce María told TODAY.com in Spanish over the phone about the upcoming tour. “I’m emotional ... and I’m just as excited as everyone, the Rebelde generation.”

After teasing a possible reunion last year, the Mexican pop group announced their Soy Rebelde Tour (which translates to I'm a Rebel) on. Jan. 19. The group shared the exciting news on their group’s social media, along with the tour dates for their 2023 concerts. RBD is set to visit cities in the U.S., Mexico and Brazil.

Days after the announcement was made, several additional dates were added as fans' excitement grew, including a special final stop in Mexico City at the end of the year.

Additionally on Aug. 17, TODAY.com also exclusively premiered their new song , “Cerquita De Ti.”

The Spanish song is a nostalgia-filled track about being there for one another despite being far away and having a long-lasting connection.

Now that the tour has started and scheduled to go on until the end of 2023, if you're looking for RBD tickets and how to catch them in your city, here's everything you need to know.

When did RBD reunite?

Talks about a reunion tour started when RBD’s music was released on streaming platforms in 2020, followed by a virtual concert in December of that year that included Anahí, Chávez, von Uckermann and Perroni.

Dulce María had just given birth and was unable to join her former bandmates. “Ozark” actor Alfonso Herrera was also an original member of the group, but has previously expressed that he’s focused on his acting career.

“Finally the stars aligned,” Dulce María told TODAY.com, adding that the reunion tour happened at the perfect time. “The five of us got together for this great announcement, these shows that we are going to do. We’ve had the intention of doing this tour for years but it got difficult to get everyone together and our schedules to align.”

Dulce María teased nostalgia and good times, telling TODAY.com, “We’re going to give the best versions of ourselves. It’s going to be filled with nostalgia, with the songs that we and our fans grew up listening to.”

Dulce María couldn't wait to sing the group’s biggest hits, including “Rebelde,” “Aún Hay Algo,” “Tras de Mí,” and “Sálvame,” as well as other non-single tracks like “Otro Día Que Va” and “Qué Hay Detrás” and “Tenerte y Quererte.”

Personally, she was excited to sing “No Pares” (“Don’t Stop”), which is a very special song for her. “It’s a song about hope,” she said. “We’ve all been through many difficult moments, and it’s about fighting for what you want and believe and to never stop dreaming.”

What's the history of RBD?

RBD was a creation of the popular Mexican telenovela “Rebelde,” which premiered in 2004. The teen show followed a group of students at the prestigious Elite Way School who formed the musical band RBD. The on-screen group would go on to become one of the best-selling Latin acts, selling over 15 million records worldwide.

During their time together, they released five studio albums. They also earned two Latin Grammy nominations. RBD disbanded in March 2009.

To this day, fans have held out hope that they would one day reunite — especially after Bad Bunny name-dropped them in one of his 2022 songs and did a TikTok singing to “Sálvame” and Anahí responded. Karol G also invited Anahí to sing the hit song at one of her concerts.

Dulce María said “It’s incredible” that a new generation of fans has discovered their music and younger artists have expressed their love for RBD.

“It definitely shocked us and (made it clear) that people wanted us to reunite,” she said, noting that this tour is a one-time event and they don’t have plans to tour for years. “But seeing all (of the fans’ messages), people sharing our music, talking about our telenovela characters, and what our group means to people has been awesome.”

All the love from everyone, she said, only reaffirmed that they owed it to their fans to give them one last wild ride as a thank you.

“It’s confirmed that what we’re doing is important and beyond our current projects and personal lives,” she said. “We just want to share this with our fans one last time.”

The tour, produced by Live Nation , will celebrate the rich 20-year history of RBD, which started as a fictional band in the hit television drama “Rebelde” from 2004 to 2006. RBD manager Guillermo Rosas is vowing to deliver an “epic show” from band members are Anahí, Dulce María, Maite Perroni, Christian Chávez, and Christopher Uckermann.

“RBD is a cultural movement that has impacted two generations across the globe,” Rosas, who is executive producer of the tour, tells Variety . “I have been part of RBD since its first international tour in 2006 and for me to see the magic awaken again is a dream come true. We are beyond excited to put this show on the road and let the creativity flow.”

Until their disbandment in 2009, RBD released nine studio albums in Spanish, Portuguese and English, and performed sold-out shows all over the world as one of the top-selling Latin acts. It’s been more than a decade since RBD’s last in-person concert (the group reunited for a virtual show in 2020), and when the news of a potential reunion tour began buzzing, the demand from fans was obvious as hashtags like #RBDTour2023 began flooding social media.

“It’s so weird because it has been 15 years and the music was not there, the videos weren’t there. It’s really weird that we’re getting all this attention from people again, but it’s also amazing,” Chávez said in an interview with ET at the time. “Every one of us is so excited about it and it shows us that pop music is still there, and the rebels are still there but in different generations.”

The Return of RBD: Beloved Mexican Pop Group Announces Massive Tour

By Tomás Mier

Almost 20 years ago, the members of RBD came together for the first time on the Mexican telenovela  Rebelde . Quickly, the series — which followed teens who formed a band at a fictional private school — became a household staple, propelling the group’s members to make the show’s band a real thing. RBD eventually became a sensation and a pop culture staple for many Latinos.

On Thursday, 15 years after RBD went on hiatus, the beloved Mexican pop group announced that they’re officially heading on a stadium and arena tour this fall, energizing longtime fans and new generations who discovered RBD after the band’s music became available on streaming services during the pandemic.

RBD’s five returning members — Dulce Maria, Anahi, Maite Perroni, Christian Chavez, and Christopher von Uckermann — caught up with Rolling Stone ahead of their tour announcement and shared why now is the perfect time for a reunion. “Our group is more than friends. They’re family,” Von Uckermann says. “We want to end this journey in such a loving way.” (RBD was originally made up of six members, but Alfonso Herrera, known more recently from Ozark, is not returning.)

“Regardless of how different each of us is, something bigger brings us together. It’s the love, the sisterhood,” Dulce adds. “We want to bring back this love that people have given us: We’re not stopping the dreams, and it’s something beautiful.”

Anahí, known for her role as Mia Colucci, and who joined Karol G during her stop in Mexico City to perform “Sálvame,” says the reunion is aimed at giving back to the group’s longest-lasting fans. “It’s been beautiful to know that people keep the group in their hearts,” she tells Rolling Stone . “To live this moment with my fellow members is pure magic.”

For Chavez, reuniting with RBD has an even more personal meaning. He’ll be able to take the stage fully embracing his identity as a queer person after feeling like he had to hide it during RBD’s success. Now, Chavez is ready to be “completely myself” on this new tour.

“I’m excited to shine as a genderfluid, queer person onstage,” he says. “While in RBD, I was fighting to be myself, to love how I wanted to love. I came out and sacrificed, perhaps, a better professional life.”

In 2007, as RBD was on a North American tour, Chavez was forced to come out after he was blackmailed by a tabloid that had acquired photos of his wedding ceremony to ex-husband B.J. Murphy. He had previously denied identifying as gay for fear of what his identity might do to his career . “I love to see how people don’t have to go through what I did,” he says of how much acceptance for the gay community has changed over the years. “I love seeing how new generations don’t care what other people think.”

But Perroni is set and committed to this project “ al 100 %.” “I would have never signed up for this if I couldn’t be there,” she says. And though welcoming her baby will be the “most important moment of my life,” she has her mind set on touring with the group. “I’m about to share a stage with my brothers and sisters. We’re back together and we’re filled with energy as we go into this,” she says. “I’m ready to live this euphoria.”

As for Von Uckermann, who focused on his acting career after RBD disbanded, he says he “never imagined” that returning to the group being part of his journey, but that now he wouldn’t have it any other way.

“There was a lot of learning and we represented something so large,” he says. “Doing this is our way of ending this cycle and thanking our fans, who after years, continue to listen to the music. We want to allow new generations, who never went to the shows, to see us perform.”

RBD Reunites for Virtual Concert 12 Years After Last Show -- See Fan Reactions

RBD Reunion

Christian Chávez, Anahí, Christopher von Uckermann and Maite Perroni made fans nostalgic with their mega-hits.

RBD is back! It's been 12 years since the Mexican pop band had their last concert, and on Saturday four of the original six members reunited for a virtual show. Christian Chávez , Anahí, Christopher von Uckermann and Maite Perroni made fans nostalgic with their mega-hits, which fans haven't heard live for over a decade.

News of their reunion was announced in October, to celebrate the 16th anniversary of their telenovela Rebelde . At the time, it was also revealed that Alfonso Herrera and Dulce María would not be participating.

The almost two-hour virtual concert consisted of fan-favorite songs like "Ser o Parecer," "Solo Quédate En Silencio," "Bésame Sin Miedo," "Enséñame," "Aún Hay Algo," "Este Corazón," "Tras de Mí" and "Nuestro Amor," among many others. They also sang their new song, “Siempre He Estado Aquí," which was released last month.

Fun facts and old footage of them in concert was also shown in between songs. During the show, Christopher sang "Inalcanzable" by himself with Christian then crooning "Tu Amor" solo.

They also took turns speaking to the viewers, sending positive messages and thanking fans for their continued support.

"We wanted to share a night with you, filled with nostalgia amid the pandemic," Maite said. "Today we can start to dream, to remember that we can make our heart's dreams come true and start from zero," she added in part before singing "Empezar Desde Cero." Anahi also sang "Sálvame" by herself.

They also gave a shout-out to Dulce -- who couldn't participate because she recently gave birth -- and Alfonso during their set, before they sang, "No Pares." They concluded by singing "Rebelde."

Dulce and Alfonso, however, did take to Twitter to show their support from afar.

Fans on Twitter couldn't contain their excitement over seeing the pop stars reunite.

The 2004 telenovela, Rebelde , led to the creation of RBD. In September, the band's entire discography was put on streaming platforms for the first time ever. Rebelde 's scandalous storylines, music and memorable fashion continue to entertain and resonate with fans all over the world.

ET spoke with Christian earlier this year, where he expressed how it felt to have fans' support after all these years.

"It's so weird because it has been 15 years and the music was not there, the videos weren't there. It's really weird that we're getting all this attention from people again, but it's also amazing. Every one of us is so excited about it and it shows us that pop music is still there, and the rebels are still there but in different generations," he said. "They show it to their sobrinos, primos, hijos. It's a family thing now. It's really beautiful for me. It's an amazing reconnection, not only with the fans because the fans have been there for a long time, but to the new generations. I think it's amazing to see the new generations coming and listening to RBD's music history. I think it's surprising that we're breaking all these records. It's part of the RBD magic, I guess."

After 15 years, the legendary Mexican Latin pop group reunited and came to Chicago as part of their global tour — a dream for many Latino millennials and Gen Zers who grew up watching the show but were never able to attend one of their concerts. For others, the reunion meant pure nostalgia, reliving younger years, but now being able to sing the same songs as their children.

“They meant so much to me because at the time I was trying to figure out my life, and began to finally live my life after coming out of the closet, becoming trans, so I really connected to being rebellious,” said Sammy Martinez, 41.

RBD member Anahí is projected on screens flanking the stage during a performance at Guaranteed Rate Field on Sept. 8, 2023, in Chicago.

More than 60,000 other fans joined Martinez over two sold-out concerts at Guaranteed Rate Field on Thursday and Friday, where beloved band members Anahí, Maite Perroni, Dulce María, Christopher von Uckermann, and Christian Chávez sang the band’s greatest hits.

Including “Tras de Mí,” “Quédate en Silencio” and “Este Corazón.”

But perhaps “Salvame,” a song about finding healing and purpose, is one that strikes the hardest for those fans who grew up finding comfort in the turbulence of life by watching the show, but are adults now.

While singing along, many cried. Martinez was one of them. The song was one of strong significance, she said, because it reminds her of her emotional healing process.

“It means a lot to me because it’s so true that you can come out from a dark place and it’s going to get better,” said Martinez.

But the song also struck younger fans.

Sitting next to her mother, tears rolled down the cheeks of Analia Topete Jaurer, 14, as she sang along. The mother and daughter drove two hours from Elkhart, Indiana, for the show. It was a dream to attend the concert for Valentina Jaurer, 46, who has passed the love she has for RBD to her daughter.

Concertgoers watch RBD perform at Guaranteed Rate Field on Sept. 8, 2023.

When the band was at its peak, Valentina Jaurer had moved to the United States from Mexico and her daughter was born, but because her life was changing too quickly, she said, she couldn’t afford to attend the concert.

“My daughter hadn’t even been born when the show was airing. Sharing this moment with her makes me so happy because some things will never be the same,” said Valentina Jaurer.

Most fans wore RBD-inspired outfits and exchanged star stickers and bracelets, two accessories that symbolize the “Rebelde” generation.

Many more wore the iconic red tie and flashy hats, miniskirts, and tall boots.

“It’s surreal to be here. To see everyone dressed this way, I never thought it would happen and I’m emotional, so excited to be here,” said Isabel Bautista, 22.

A street vendor set up shop outside the field selling Anahi’s iconic pink hat, which was popularized after she wore it for RBD’s “Salvame” music video. Another one was selling the “Rebelde” red tie, which was a part of the school uniform in the telenovela.

RBD performs at Guaranteed Rate Field on Sept. 8, 2023.

On Thursday night, while his three children were inside listening to RBD, their favorite band, Jose Perez sold more than 200 hats. He said he came up with the idea after realizing that the band’s return was going to be a special time for many in the city.

Videos of hourlong lines to get into the band’s concerts have gone viral since the beginning of the tour. Many other fans have posted anecdotes about the band’s significance and impact on their life.

“I don’t think people understand how much this means for us, Latinos in the country,” Bautista added.

The last concert that RBD held in Chicago was in 2008 at the Allstate Arena, but before that, one of the band’s first visits was to perform at Hispano Fest, a small food and music festival in Melrose Park, right outside Chicago.

“We have a bond with Chicago because it was one of the first U.S. cities that we visited as a band,” band member Christian Chávez told the Tribune.

“Thank you for never stop dreaming,” Dulce María told the crowd as thousands of fans cheered, yelling “Rebelde.”

RBD Reunited And Announced The Dates For The Band’s Highly-Anticipated ‘Soy Rebelde Tour 2023’

Lucas Villa

After 15 years since the band’s last time on stage together, RBD will be touring the US this summer. Last night (January 19), the Mexican pop group revealed the dates for its highly-anticipated reunion trek Soy Rebelde Tour 2023 .

Anahí , Dulce María, Christian Chávez, Christopher von Uckermann, and Maite Perroni will reunite under the RBD name to tour the US, Mexico, and Brazil. Alfonso “Poncho” Herrera decided not to return for the reunion tour. The title of the Soy Rebelde Tour 2023 is a reference to the Mexican telenovela Rebelde where the band was formed in 2004. The red tie in the tour logo is an homage to RBD’s school uniforms on the show. In posts across social media, RBD celebrated the band’s return.

“It’s a reality!!!” RBD wrote in Spanish on Twitter. “We’ll see you all very soon!”

I originally became a fan of Rbd because of a girl I had been dating several years ago! She used to watch Mexican Soap Opera's and that is where she discovered Rbd and how I eventually became a fan! There is just something fun about their music, it pulls you in and just makes you have a good time. With that said, one day I came home and she had 2 tickets to a show of theirs and I have to admit I was excited. We arrived at the show about an hour before start time, to hang out and enjoy the scene. It was such a fun mix of people and the atmosphere was one of fun and joy. We made our way into the venue and the lights dimmed and Rdb started the show. I was impressed from the beginning! They had such a fun presence on stage and really knew how to entertain. Their dancing was a great part of the show, and it was easy to tell that they practiced a lot. The crowd as well were dancing all over the place and having a great time. The light show along with all the action on stage created quite the visual aspect. All in all, it was one of the better shows that I have seen! The way they interacted with the crowd and built up the excitement through the music was perfect!

Will RBD Go on Tour Again?

last rbd tour

Will RBD ever go on tour again? After the Mexican pop group’s successful reunion tour last year, it seemed like the five members – Anahí, Dulce María, Maite Perroni, Christopher von Uckermann, and Christian Chávez – had a future in music and going on tour together. But now it sounds like they’re going through a rough patch, even though they haven’t directly spoken out about it.

Based on reports, the mishap is linked to RBD’s former manager, Guillermo Rosas, who reportedly exited the project in January . Before he parted ways with the band, Rosas and the five band members had been “equal partners” in the group’s reunion chapter. However, it looks like they ended the tour with financial issues, echoing what the band went through back in their heyday.

El colmo — #NiUnaMenos (@Amiradoxa) May 16, 2024
@susanitatieneun8aton Con información y entrevista exclusiva del programa Ventaneando de TV Azteca ♬ sonido original – Susanita tiene un 🐭

In a new conversation with Perroni’s husband, Andrés Tovar, he said there’s an ongoing investigation regarding the money owed to the group from the earnings of the Mexico and Colombia shows. “There is an audit in progress. They are reviewing the whole internal issue of the tour, and they are also considering talking to the companies involved to see the matter of the proceeds. Where are they? How much is it?” he told the Mexican television show Ventaneando . He also mentioned that doing an audit is the “most responsible thing” to represent the accounts to all those involved and the close numbers on past shows.

Yo si quería otra gira de RBD 😢 — Aldape (@marceloaldape) May 16, 2024

He also shared that there is “a missing amount” in the tour’s earnings compared to what the RBD members received. The audit doesn’t have a deadline yet, but Tovar says that each member has their own lawyer in addition to one American lawyer who represents RBD’s company. The lawyer is revising the tour’s earnings to make sure they receive what is due and that the money is in order.

Moreover, another reason why social media users are speculating about troubles between the members is due to Anahí posting a happy birthday message to Rosas (May 5) amid money fraud allegations . In her birthday message, she wrote that her life doesn’t have space for grudges. Though it’s not confirmed, Ventaneando ’s host Pati Chapoy speculates it’s because the Mexican pop star’s husband has business ties with Rosas.

However, the birthday message was assumed to have sat poorly with the bandmates, given they individually posted about loyalty on social media. Due to all the speculation, Anahí posted another message clarifying that it was a personal opinion and that her intention wasn’t to hurt anyone. She also mentioned that in a professional matter, she completely agrees with everyone’s wish to be transparent. The following week (May 14), Anahí’s brother-in-law, Jorge D’Alessio, called out her bandmates for not wishing her a happy birthday .

Last month, Chávez told Remezcla his hopes for RBD to collaborate with Karol G, Anitta, and Ludmilla in the future. At this year’s Premio Lo Nuestro, he also shared that the group plans to work on a tour documentary and “a Live in São Paulo” they recorded.

While we don’t know what the future holds, we hope the five members end up on good terms.

Childish Gambino is back: Rapper announces massive tour after new album drop

Donald Glover on the red carpet at the 2024 Met Gala in New York City.

Multi-hyphenate Donald Glover is going back on tour as Childish Gambino.

The musician-writer-actor-director-producer surprised fans with the late-night release of "Atavista," a reworked version of his 2020 project "3.15.20."

The album drop was accompanied by news of an upcoming tour. “The New World Tour ,” which starts in August, will include performances in North America, Europe, the U.K., Australia and New Zealand, according to Glover’s social media post.

Glover, who recently helped create and stars in a “Mr. & Mrs. Smith" series reboot for Amazon Prime , had previously told fans that his 2018 tour would be “the last Childish Gambino tour ever.”

But for weeks, Glover has been teasing Childish Gambino's return.

In April, Glover appeared at Coachella as a surprise guest during rapper Tyler, the Creator's headlining set.

After the appearance, Glover revealed on an Instagram livestream that he would release two final Childish Gambino albums.

He also shared the tracklist for the album on an Instagram Story. Ariana Grande, 21 Savage, Summer Walker and others are collaborators on the album.

On Sunday, Glover also released a music video for “ Little Foot Big Foot " feat. Young Nudy. The roughly six-minute black-and-white music video features Glover playing a jazz-age entertainer, and Quinta Brunson, the venue owner.

In addition to "Atavista," Glover said he would be releasing a new album this summer. He didn’t disclose a specific date.

A second album, Glover said, will be a soundtrack to his upcoming film "Bando Stone and the New World."

"This last Childish Gambino album is a soundtrack to this film and it's for my fans," he said.

Glover has been hinting at retirement for years, telling fans in 2017 that the Childish Gambino persona had an end date.

After winning a Grammy for best traditional R&B performance in 2018, he reiterated his intention to end the musical project.

"I like endings and I think they're important to progress," he said in a new s conference at the award show .

Glover, who starred and created the hit series "Atlanta," has several other projects in the works.

He's expected to return for Peacock‘s "Community: The Movie," which will reunite the cast of the Dan Harmon comedy series.

"It’s happening but I don’t know when. I swear, it’s happening," Glover told Deadline in a recent interview.

He will also again voice Simba in the upcoming Disney live-action film, " Mufasa: The Lion King ," which will hit theaters on Dec. 20.

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Madonna put on a free concert on Copacabana beach Saturday night, turning Rio de Janeiro’s vast stretch of sand into an enormous dance floor teeming with a multitude of her fans.

It was the last show of The Celebration Tour, her first retrospective, which kicked off in October in London .

The “Queen of Pop” began the show with her 1998 hit “Nothing Really Matters.” Huge cheers rose from the buzzing, tightly packed crowd, pressed up against the barriers. Others held house parties in brightly lighted apartments and hotels overlooking the beachfront. Helicopters and drones flew overhead, and motorboats and sailboats anchored off the beach filled the bay.

“Here we are in the most beautiful place in the world,” Madonna, 65, told the crowd. Pointing out the ocean view, the mountains and the Christ the Redeemer statue overlooking the city, she added: “This place is magic.”

Madonna performed her classic hits, including “Like A Virgin” and “Hung Up.” For the introduction to “Like A Prayer,” her head was completely covered in a black cape, a rosary gripped in her hands.

The star paid an emotional tribute to “all the bright lights” lost to AIDS as she sang “Live to Tell,” with black and white photos of people who died from the illness flashing behind her.

Later, she was joined on stage by Brazilian artists Anitta and Pabllo Vittar.

Rio spent the last few days readying itself for the performance.

An estimated 1.6 million people attended the show, G1 reported, citing Rio City Hall’s tourism agency. That is more than 10 times Madonna’s record attendance of 130,000 at Paris’ Parc des Sceaux in 1987. Madonna’s official website hyped the show as the biggest ever in her four-decade career.

In recent days, the buzz was palpable. Fans milled outside the stately, beachfront Copacabana Palace hotel , where Madonna is staying, hoping to catch a glimpse of the pop star. During the sound check on the stage set up in front of the hotel, they danced on the sand.

By midday Saturday, fans crowded in front of the hotel. A white-bearded man carried a sign saying, “Welcome Madonna you are the best I love you.”

Flags with “Madonna” printed against a background of Copacabana’s iconic black and white waved sidewalk pattern hung from balconies. The area was packed with street vendors and concert attendees kitted out in themed T-shirts, sweating under a baking sun.

“Since Madonna arrived here, I’ve been coming every day with this outfit to welcome my idol, my diva, my pop queen,” said Rosemary de Oliveira Bohrer, 69, who sported a gold-colored cone bra and a black cap.

“It’s going to be an unforgettable show here in Copacabana,” said Oliveira Bohrer, a retired civil servant who lives in the area.

Eighteen sound towers were spread along the beach to ensure that all attendees can hear the hits. Her two-hour show started at 10:37 p.m. local time, nearly 50 minutes behind schedule.

City Hall produced a report in April estimating that the concert would vinject 293 million reals ($57 million) into the local economy. Hotel capacity was expected to reach 98% in Copacabana, according to Rio’s hotel association. Fans hailing from across Brazil and even Argentina and France sought out Airbnbs for the weekend, the platform said in a statement. Rio’s international airport had forecast an extra 170 flights during May 1-6, from 27 destinations, City Hall said in a statement.

“It’s a unique opportunity to see Madonna, who knows if she’ll ever come back,” said Alessandro Augusto, 53, who flew in from Brazil’s Ceara state — approximately 2,500 kilometers (1,555 miles) from Rio.

“Welcome Queen!” read Heineken ads plastered around the city, the lettering above an image of an upturned bottle cap resembling a crown.

Heineken wasn’t the only company seeking to profit from the excitement. Bars and restaurants prepared “Like a Virgin” cocktails. A shop in the downtown neighborhood famed for selling Carnival attire completely reinvented itself, stocking its shelves with Madonna-themed costumes, fans, fanny packs and even underwear.

Organization of the mega-event was similar to New Year’s Eve, when millions of people gather on Copacabana for its fireworks display, local authorities said. That annual event often produces widespread thefts and muggings, and there was some concern such problems might occur at Madonna’s show.

Rio state’s security plan included the presence of 3,200 military personnel and 1,500 civilian police officers on stand by. In the lead-up to the concert, Brazil’s navy inspected vessels that wished to position themselves offshore to follow the show.

A number of huge concerts have taken place on Copacabana beach before, including a 1994 New Year’s Eve show by Rod Stewart that drew more than 4 million fans and was the biggest free rock concert in history , according to Guinness World Records. Many of those spectators also came to see Rio’s fireworks show, though, so a more fitting comparison might be to the Rolling Stones in 2006, which saw 1.2 million people crowd onto the sand, according to Rio’s military police, the newspaper Folha de Sao Paulo reported at the time.

Ana Beatriz Soares, a fan who was at Copacabana on Saturday, said Madonna has made her mark across the decades.

“Madonna had to run so that today’s pop artists could walk. That’s why she’s important, because she serves as an inspiration for today’s pop divas,” Soares said.

“And that’s 40 years ago. Not 40 days, 40 months. It’s 40 years,” she said.

RBD

This summer, RBD is set to kick off its Soy Rebelde Tour , marking a highly awaited comeback for the group almost 20 years later.

The 26-date trek, produced by Live Nation, will find original members Anahí, Dulce María, Christian Chavez, Maite Perroni and Christopher von Uckermann visiting fans in Mexico, Brazil, and the U.S. across 10 stadiums and 16 arenas. (Alfonso Herrera will not join his bandmates.)

“It’s a new era that makes us really excited and it’s a new opportunity to share the stage once again and feel a unique energy […] Now, the time [for the reunion] is perfect because we’re now more conscious, more mature, we’ll enjoy it from a different perspective now as adults,” Perroni previously told Billboard .

The group’s last tour grossed a total of $72.5 million and sold more than 1.5 million tickets, according to figures reported to Billboard Boxscore. With their 2023 stint — which will kick off in El Paso, Texas, at the Sun Bowl Stadium on Aug. 25 — RBD hope to “close a cycle of our lives that was so important and so spectacular,” according to Perroni.

“Our intention this time around is to enjoy it to the fullest, to share, thank everyone and have some sort of closure that I don’t think we had last time around. We had a goodbye tour back then, but it didn’t feel like we really said goodbye,” she noted.

While the beloved RBD fandom prepares its Elite Way School uniform-inspired concert ‘fit, the Billboard Latin team curated a dream tour setlist featuring 11 of RBD’s biggest Billboard hits. See the list below:

RBD

“Rebelde”—the official theme song of the 2004 hit telenovela—marked RBD’s first-ever entry on the Hot Latin Songs chart on April 9, 2005. We can already imagine everyone at the venue singing the rebellious chorus full blast: “And I am a rebel when I don’t follow others.”

"Solo Quédate En Silencio"

A mid-tempo pop song that narrates the story of a couple who’s breaking up, “Solo quédate en silencio” (Just stay in silence) became RBD’s first Top 10 hit on the Hot Latin Songs chart. The heartfelt track peaked at No. 1 on the chart dated Oct. 1, 2005.

"Nuestro Amor"

Peaking at No. 6 on the Hot Latin Song chart dated Feb. 4, 2006, “Nuestro Amor” is a pop-rock jam that spotlights a love story that is simple and sweet. “Everything was like in a dream/In our love everything is happening/And it is so, so it is/And there is nothing to do,” they chant in the chorus.

"Aún Hay Algo"

“Aún Hay Algo” is about an unforgettable old love with the hope of getting back together. “If you ever think of me/Maybe when you see me you get happy/maybe there’s still some love between the two of us,” RBD sings on the track that debuted in the Hot Latin Songs chart on March 18, 2006.

"Este Corazón"

With lyrics such as: “And this heart that you stole when you left/You left with my kisses/With my kisses and my dreams/And this heart is beating slower and slower,” RBD dropped a full-on heartbreak song that ultimately debuted No. 10 on the Hot Latin Songs chart dated July 29, 2006.

"Ser o Parecer"

RBD

The lyrics in “Ser o Parecer” can easily connect with any hopeful romantic. “I know that the heart beats stronger, more than an engine/And although you don’t know anything about me/One day I will reach you, love,” they chant. The track earned RBD its first No. 1 hit on Dec. 6, 2006, for two weeks.

“Dame,” which entered the Hot Latin Songs chart on February 10, 2007, is all about determination and conquering your crush. “Give me a chance/Give me just a sign/Give me a little faith/Give me your first kiss/Give me everything you have,” the Mexican group belt in the lyrics.

"Besame Sin Miedo"

Just like “Dame,” “Besame Sin Miedo” (kiss me without fear) is also about taking a risk in love. “Come, kiss me without fear, with your heart/Give me a kiss that takes me to the sun/Kiss me without fear, without explanation/Give me a kiss that fills me with your love,” says the chorus.

"Inalcanzable"

In the nostalgic ballad “Inalcanzable,” which hit No. 6 on the Hot Latin Songs chart dated Dec. 22, 2007, RBD chants about unrequited love. “Unreachable as a star so distant/an almost impossible love/Invisible as air, you’re so unreachable/As sublime as an angel/an almost impossible love,” they sing.

"Empezar Desde Cero"

A feel-good bop, “Empezar Desde Cero,” which loosely translated to “starting from scratch,” the track that entered the Billboard charts on April 26, 2008, is about a person who’s willing to change “everything I am and what I was” to make a relationship last.

RBD

One of RBD’s most iconic tracks, “Sálvame” is a heartfelt ballad about a broken heart that yearns to be saved. The track recently debuted at No. 15 on the Latin Pop Digital Song Sales chart in June 2022, the same month Karol G and RBD’s Anahí performed it together during Karol’s Bichota Tour in Mexico.

Shane Lowry shoots record front-nine 29 at PGA Championship

Change Text Size

Shane Lowry made up ground in a hurry with a 6-under 29 on the front nine at Valhalla Golf Club in the third round of the PGA Championship on Saturday.

Although he started the round 4-under and eight shots behind leader Xander Schauffele, Lowry birdied holes 2, 3, 4, 5, 7 and 9 to get to within two shots of the lead.

A three-time PGA TOUR winner, most recently at last month’s Zurich Classic of New Orleans with partner Rory McIlroy, Lowry became the first player to break 30 on either nine at a Valhalla PGA Championship (1996, 2000, 2014, 2024).

Kevin Kisner shot the last 29 at a PGA Championship in Round 2 at Bellerive Country Club in 2018.

Lowry is coming off a T47 at the Wells Fargo Championship, but before that captured the Zurich Classic of New Orleans with McIlroy to break a nearly five-year win drought on the PGA TOUR.

Playing right behind Lowry, McIlroy himself enjoyed a solid front nine, going out in 3-under 32 to reach 8 under for the tournament, four shots off the lead with 27 holes remaining.

McIlroy is trying to snap a winless streak in the majors that dates to the 2014 PGA Championship at Valhalla – his second PGA title and fourth major overall. He’s had a lot of close calls since then.

The Nerve of Madonna to Pull It Off, Again

Eighteen years ago, Madonna observed : “Once you pass 35, your age becomes part of the first sentence of anything written. It’s a form of limiting your options and almost putting you in your place. For women, naturally.” She was 47 when she said that and intent on challenging the cultural script that suggested women, especially female performers, had a use-by date.

“Why is that acceptable?” she asked the music writer Brian Hiatt nearly 10 years later, still battling critics who told her to dress her age, act her age — in short, pack it in and retreat from the spotlight because she was past her prime. “Women, generally, when they reach a certain age, have accepted that they’re not allowed to behave a certain way. But I don’t follow the rules.”

To the question “Is she still relevant?” her Celebration Tour, which concluded this month, is proof that she is. Madonna performed before the largest audience ever gathered to watch a female artist and staged the single biggest free stand-alone concert in history: 1.6 million people turned Rio de Janeiro’s Copacabana Beach into a dance floor on May 4. According to Billboard , her six-month, 80-show tour grossed $225.4 million, making her the only woman in history to gross more than $100 million during each of six concert tours. (The only solo male in that category is Bruce Springsteen.)

But there’s so much more to her triumph than numbers. That a 65-year-old female pop star pulled off this tour and, despite our increasingly intolerant times, the performance was her most relentlessly and delightfully queer since 1990’s groundbreaking Blond Ambition Tour would be unimaginable, except that it was Madonna. The Celebration Tour proved that Madonna wasn’t afraid of drawing attention to her long career; she owned it proudly.

All of her past selves showed up, in role and in costume, to help celebrate the many ways she has evolved and the many ways she and her collaborators have explored and expressed gender throughout the years. It was a beautifully inclusive, encouraging spectacle. If history is a guide, the social and artistic ramifications of her performance will extend long after her tour.

Madonna’s 1985 Virgin Tour, her debut, included only 40 shows in North America and grossed about $5 million. But its impact on young lives is immeasurable. The young women and girls in her audience were on the cusp of unleashing their sexual selves and embracing their independence, which is what made them so terrifying to a broader society intent on keeping them polite, passive and manageable.

Madonna’s message to her young audience was: Embrace your power, dream big and dare to be your own damned self. That message would resonate through a generation and across the globe, as aspiring Madonnas grew up to be politicians, lawyers, doctors, teachers, members of the armed forces, Third Wave feminists, riot grrrls and pop stars themselves.

Madonna was, in fact, the lead author of the female pop star playbook, and she continues to write the unexplored and perilous back end of it while artists like Olivia Rodrigo and Billie Eilish adapt the front end and more established stars like Beyoncé and Taylor Swift refine what’s possible in the middle. Madonna’s continuous career represents a universe of possibility for their own, despite the entertainment industry’s willingness to jettison midcareer women in favor of artists with younger faces and bodies.

But for women not named Madonna (or Beyoncé or Taylor Swift), growing older and maturing in public is much more fraught. Older men are considered wise, but older women are often ignored or discounted. Thanks to the intervention of the pharmaceutical industry, men are encouraged to have an active sex life into their 80s. The idea of older women having sex remains, for many, repellent.

Madonna has challenged our notions of what a woman should do and be on all those counts: She chooses to age as she sees fit, she says what she believes loudly and forcefully, and she is as proudly sexual as she was in 1985.

With her Celebration Tour, Madonna demonstrated night after night for six months that an older woman can exhibit power and strength — joyfully, generously and defiantly. Her glorious performance was perhaps even sweeter when we recall that hip and knee injuries disrupted her Madame X tour four years ago and a bacterial infection threatened not only the Celebration Tour but also Madonna’s life.

Forty years ago, Madonna showed audiences, particularly girls and women, that they could mute the killjoy chorus keeping them from self-realization. On the Celebration Tour, Madonna doubled down on this idea, encouraging fans to follow their hearts, minds and inner freaks by both being herself onstage and employing diverse and talented dancers to carry that message in their own convincing and resonant ways.

If this were the last tour of Madonna’s career — and we sincerely hope it was not — she would retire as the most influential female pop star of all time, a legitimate legend who wowed audiences, defied expectations and broke records. Having served more than 40 years in the public eye, she could take a holiday, take some time to celebrate. It would be, it would be so nice.
