The sprawling metropolis of Davao is hailed as one of the most energetic and cosmopolitan centres in the Philippines. Strewn out across the hilly valleys of the Mindanao coast, the diverse local populace here enjoys a place right on the doorstep of some of the country’s most awe-inspiring natural wonders.

To the south, the dominating shadow of Mount Apo, the largest in the entire archipelago, forms one of the biggest attractions, and it’s possible to organise multi-day hikes departing from town. Nearby, the Philippine Eagle Center showcases one of the most endangered birds in the world and the Eden Nature Park has panoramic walking trails to boot.

Explore Davao Poblacion (the central district) with your Davao tour guide for a patchwork of post-colonial architecture, heady market places and interesting heritage museums, many of which showcase the old tribal character of the city and its historical connection with settlers from Japan.

For foodies, the city is famed as the best producer of Mango and Durian fruits in the Philippines, while the local favourite sinuglaw dish offers a taste of Davao’s multi-cultural cuisine style; definitely worth a try.

If you want a tropical paradise that is a mere hour away from the convenience of a city, read on and start taking notes. Davao City will surely captivate you.

Kadayawan Festival in Davao

When planning your trip to Davao, it's essential to take note of the season, climate and weather to have a hassle-free adventure. This is to avoid canceled trips due to inclement weather that might occur at any time of day.

It is also essential when packing your things, as it would serve as a guideline on what you have to bring and wear during your trip to Davao.

As with the whole Philippines, Davao City only has two seasons, the dry summer season and the wet season.  If you have a lot of outdoor destinations included in your Davao itinerary , it's best to book flights to the Philippines during the dry months of January to April.

These months have the least chances of rainfall, so you can fully enjoy the outdoor activities and water adventures.

Davao celebrates its annual Kadayawan Festival every third week of August.  Recognized as the “Mother of all Mindanao festivals” Kadayawan is an extravagant affair that features flower floats parades, street dancing, and trade fairs.

The festival is held in commemoration of Davao’s indigenous people and their contribution to the city’s rich cultural heritage. Kadayawan Festival is also a thanksgiving celebration for a bountiful harvest. Visiting Davao City during the Kadayawan Festival is a great way to experience the city and be immersed in its vibrant culture.

Before heading to the city, make sure to check Davao weather updates to avoid any problems during your trip. Learning about the climate and weather of your destination is the best way to prevent canceled plans due to inclement weather conditions.

Take note that Davao weather does not vary significantly throughout the year. However, March, April, and May are the hottest months in Davao City, with an average daily high of 32°C.

On the other hand, the cool season starts in December and lasts through February, with an average daily high temperature below 31°C. January is the coldest month of the year with and an average low of 24°C.

Here’s a summary of the average temperature in Davao City.

The ideal time to visit Davao City for hot-weather activities would be from early January to May. These months are perfect because they receive less rainfall than the other months. Here’s a summary of the average monthly rainfall in Davao City:

Davao Travel Guide: What to Do + Hotels + Itinerary

Davao weather can be humid during the summer season, it's best to wear light, breathable clothes as the weather can get hot and humid. If you’re coming to Davao from June to November,  bring an umbrella or jacket since these months are the rainy season.

Luckily for travelers looking for their next tropical getaway, Davao is easy to reach. Thanks to its international airport, Davao is highly accessible from other airports in the Philippines , as well as from select international airports abroad. Travelers can also catch daily flights to Manila from here.

Davao has its own airport, the Francisco Bangoy International Airport commonly referred to as the Davao International Airport . It is the main gateway to Mindanao, so it is naturally the busiest airport in Mindanao and the third busiest in the Philippines.

Aside from being connected to major jump-offs all over the Philippines, Davao Airport is also connected to a number of international airports.

If you’re coming from outside of the Philippines, you can travel to Davao directly, or you can fly to either Manila-Ninoy Aquino International Airport in Luzon or Mactan-Cebu International Airport in the Visaya.

From International Destinations

Davao International Airport is connected to international destinations like Hongkong, Singapore, Indonesia, and Taiwan. Wherever you are in the world, you can fly to those countries and hop on a plane headed directly for Davao City.

From Luzon and Visayas

You also have the option to fly to the major jump-off points across the country. The Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Airport in  Manila , Luzon is connected to several countries in Asia, Middle East, Oceania, North America, and Europe. From NAIA, you can fly directly to Davao International Airport.

Flying in from Clark to Davao, it is also a good choice if you’re coming from the Northern part of Luzon or if you want to avoid the traffic in Manila. Airfares from Clark are usually lower than Manila. Luckily, Clark International Airport is connected to Korea, Taiwan, Hongkong, and Singapore.

You can also fly in from the Visayas region by taking  Bohol to Davao flight  or Bacolod to Davao flight , among others. A flight from Cebu is also a popular choice as the Mactan-Cebu International Airport is now connected to 21 international destinations including, Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, South Korea, Japan, Taiwan, and Hong Kong.

If you will be coming from Mindanao, you can take a Zamboanga to Davao flight as well.

Traveling to Davao via ferry is also possible, albeit less convenient. There are no ports that accommodate long-distance passenger ferries within the city. If you’re coming from Manila or Cebu, you will be docking at Nasipit Port in Agusan del Norte which is approximately 6 hours away from Davao City.

2Go Travel offers ferry routes from Manila to Nasipit Port twice a week. The travel time typically takes 33 hours and 30 minutes. Likewise, only 2Go Travel has routes from Cebu to Nasipit Port.

There are trips thrice a week with travel time lasting 8 hours. The sailing durations and trip frequency may vary from season to season, so be sure to check the schedule before you plan your trip.

You will need to learn how to get around Davao to reach tourist attractions. Strap on because Davao has a variety of transportation options. The primary mode of transport is the jeepney, which has specific routes that can take you around the city. Jeepneys,  multicabs, buses, and tricycles serve as general transport.

  • Book Davao City airport transfers

Taxicabs can also be hired to take you to other parts of Davao. Alternatively, you can rent a car in Davao for maximum comfort and convenience. Just make sure you have all the requirements to rent a car in the Philippines . Taxi booking apps are also available in Davao.

Jeepneys or jeeps are the most popular means of public transportation in the Philippines along major highways. They ply specific routes that can take you around the city.

Riding these open-aired vehicles in congested streets offers an interesting experience for first-time visitors. You can use this Davao City Jeepney Guide App to help you find and ride the right jeepney route.

Motorized tricycles, or simply tricycles, are the Philippine version of the auto-rickshaw. They are also comparable to Thailand’s tuk-tuk. Tricycles ply the barangay roads throughout the Davao City; they typically go where the jeepneys can’t.

Tricycles can’t pass by major roads, but you can hail one anywhere as long as you’re not on the highway.

Van or Car Rental

If you’re traveling from the city to the rural towns, you might need to get on a bus, ride a jeepney afterward, and possibly hop on a tricycle. Multiple transfers are unavoidable if you’re traveling to the further towns of the province via public transportation. If this isn’t comfortable for you, you can opt for self-drive car rentals in the Philippines . Booking a Davao car rental  or a van rental in the Philippines  is your best option, or if you can indulge, book a  budget car rental in the Philippines ,  SUV rental in the Philippines , or  luxury car rental in the Philippines .

There are plenty of taxi cabs in Davao. They're one of the easiest modes of getting around, but they can also be quite costly since Davao is a huge city. You can hail one almost anywhere.

The best thing about Davao taxis is that unlike those in Metro Manila who usually pick passengers, Davao taxi drivers will take you to your destination without second thoughts.

Taxi Booking App

Typically, commuting in Davao entails riding more than one public transportation. If you can’t stand going through multiple transfers, then you can opt to take a taxi or book with the Grab Taxi app .

While Grab Taxi is usually more expensive than riding jeepneys or buses, these can ensure you can get around safely and in comfort. You don’t have to do multiple transfers, which is convenient for travelers coming from and going to the airport.

There are also buses in Davao. However, buses exclusively ply the north to south route. Riding a bus is a great way to go in and out of the city. You can also ride a bus to get to Samal Island. The Island City Express Bus can take you to Samal Island via the barge-ferry at Sasa Ferry Terminal.

Another mode of transportation you can take to reach Samal Island is a water taxi. Water taxis bring locals and international travelers to and from Samal Island and Davao. There are daily water taxi trips to the Island Garden City of Samal. You catch the water taxi at Sta. Ana Wharf in Davao. The water taxi can transport up to 4 passengers.

For a hassle-free and convenient trip to Davao, it's essential to read up on useful tips. These will come in handy if it's your first time in Davao

Major establishments in Davao accept payments in Philippine Peso (PHP). There are several ATMs and money changers in Downtown Davao. However, there are only a few in Samal Island.

So be sure to withdraw more than enough cash and have your currencies changed while in Davao City proper.  ATMs are available in most establishments, such as malls and convenience stores. However, not all establishments may accept credit card payments.

If you're in Davao and you want to address a local, expect an answer in either Cebuano, Tagalog, or English. Most locals understand English well, so don't be afraid to ask questions or directions. Davao City travel guide

Davao city tourism | davao city guide, you're going to love davao city.

Davao offers spectacular natural beauty, with forests, the highest mountain in the Philippines, Mount Apo, and beautiful coral islands. A diverse population of indigenous, migrant, and ex-pat communities calls Davao home.

davao city tour guide

Davao is also home to stunning wildlife, including the largest eagle in the world, the Philippine Eagle, and some of the rarest orchids.

Top 5 Reasons to Visit Davao City

1. island hopping.

Visit Palawan, Boracay, or Samal Island to enjoy some of the very best beaches in the Philippines.

2. The View from Shrine Hills

Climb to the summit of the Shrine Hills to enjoy the best views of the city. You can cool down from your climb in the local pool.

3. The Eagles

See the world's largest eagle at the Philippine Eagle Center and learn more about this critically endangered species.

4. Meet Some Crocs

Visit Davao Crocodile Park to see the Philippine Crocodiles. There are also tigers and deer and shows to enjoy.

5. Endless Tranquility

For a city of more than one million, Davao is surprisingly quiet and laid-back. The nightlife is subdued and centers on enjoying a quiet drink and music on Matina Town Square.

What to do in Davao City

1. a great intro to davao's ethnic mosaic.

Davao City's premier museum is a little jewel. It's set up to provide a primer to the island's rich ethnic patchwork, and does a fantastic job over its two exhibit-packed floors. The Indigenous Peoples Gallery offers a great showcase for the artistic talents of local groups, including some breathtakingly intricate model boats, while if you have any interest in fashion, the colorful indigenous textiles will be a breath of fresh air. You'll find it not far from the Davao River on the Andres Bonifacio Rotunda.

2. Take Snaps Of Some Charismatic Snappers

Crocodiles are a natural mascot for Davao City, and the town's Crocodile Park is the place to get to know them. Situated right next to the Tribu K Mindanawan Cultural Village, this park is home to thousands of crocs, some of whom are farmed for their skins. And it's also home to monkeys, raptors, and other tropical critters - making it akin to Davao's main zoo. Just across the way, you'll also find the equally entertaining Davao Butterfly House. All-in-all, if you need a nature fix, this is the corner of the city to visit.

3. Get To Know Mindanao's Master Builders

Not far from the Crocodile Park, you can get to know the lifestyles of indigenous islanders in even more detail by visiting the absorbing Tribu K Mindanawan Cultural Village. See the way that Mangguangan people make adaptable homes from bamboo and rattan leaves, or the impressive (and charming) treehouses inhabited by the Mansaka, and the elevated homes of the T'boli. It's an eye-opening illustration of how varied native architecture can be, and a convenient alternative to trekking through Davao's interior.

4. Souvenir Hunters Will Be In Seventh Heaven

When it's time to shop for souvenirs, Aldevinco is definitely the number one place to head in Davao City. Located next to the People's Park on Claro M. Recto Ave, it's crammed with stores and stalls, but it's not about international chains here. The emphasis is on providing a place for Mindanao's locals to sell their handicrafts, including gorgeous malong blankets and batik-dyed clothing, as well as ornate carvings and jewelry. Everything sprawls over 8,370 square meters, so be disciplined and organize your visit so as to avoid missing any of the stalls.

5. A Soaring Sacred Spot

Rising 2,900 meters above Mindanao's coastal plain, Mount Apo is the region's dominant geological feature. A "potentially active" volcano, it's head and shoulders above any peak in the entire Philippines, but that's not the main reason to visit. Instead, Mount Apo's biodiversity and scenery come to the fore. Now given a UNESCO protected designation, the slopes of the mountain are home to over 100 unique bird species, as well as a thriving colony of Philippine Eagles (who you'll see on the national crest).

2D1N Davao Budget Travel Guide with DIY Itinerary

By vivomigsgee in Travel April 3, 2019

You might probably heard of Davao as the hometown of the current Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte ,  or the fact that it is home to the tasty durian fruit or even associate it with diverse outdoor destinations for daredevils . Whatever “D” that is, Davao has so much to offer with its plethora of attractions, and you can have a Do-It-Yourself (DIY) trip without necessarily breaking the bank.

davao city tour guide

Davao City is one of the biggest cities in the Philippines with most number of population, next to Quezon and Manila, but also the largest city overall in terms of land area. It is a first class highly urbanized city and considered to be the primary economic hub of Mindanao. But did you know that you can enjoy the best of Davao for 2 days and 1 night with only Php 1,000 budget? Surprisingly YES!

davao city tour guide

I made a little experiment and realized that you don’t really have to splurge when traveling. I asked some friends (who are also Davao locals) about tips on what to do or where to go in their beautiful city but I only got some ideas that are impossible to achieve given the limited time and budget. And so, I explored Davao City with my own terms and these are the highlights of my top activities to do in Davao on a budget: ☑️ Take a selfie and shop at Chinatown for ₱10 (bargain haven!) ☑️ Do park-hopping for free (6 different parks to visit!) ☑️ Eat durian fruit or candy for free (a must-try!!!) ☑️ Try charcoal dirty ice cream for ₱10 (delicious!) ☑️ Island hopping around Samal ₱450 (sensational activity!)

Here’s a 2D1N Davao budget travel guide with DIY itinerary:

DAY 1: CITY TOUR

davao city tour guide

Davao’s Chinatown claims the biggest Chinatown in the world in terms of land area – 44 hectares, roughly covering 4 barangays. It is said to be the only Chinatown in the Philippines with its own seaport.

davao city tour guide

There are four designated arches or virtues that marks each entry point of Chinatown namely Arch of Unity, Arch of Friendship, Arch of Prosperity and Arch of Peace. These arches are located in four different locations and each one has a unique design and color that are worthy to be visited when in Davao.

davao city tour guide

Davao’s Chinatown is a major trading center in downtown Davao where cheap items are being sold and authentic Chinese cuisines and culture can be experienced.

davao city tour guide

Just right beside the Chinatown arch, there a lot of vendors selling durian fruit and durian candies. If you’re lucky, these vendors often slice a durian fruit or two so you or any tourist can grab a free taste. It’s uniquely delish!

People’s Park

davao city tour guide

With all the cool things you can experience in Davao, park-hopping is for sure a fantastic way to enjoy. Start with the infamous People’s Park, one of the cleanest and greenest public parks in the Philippines. It is an urban public park in Davao covering an area of 4 hectares wherein most families and friends spend their time to bond and create special memories together. Cost: Php 0.00. Nada!

davao city tour guide

The main features of the park are as follow: visitors’ center, the Durian Dome, dancing fountain and Open Plaza that hosts a rainbow walk and sculptures which depicts indigenous people. Also inside People’s Park, there’s a dedicated fun park for children. Featuring seesaw, slide and other playground facilities, it’s really conducive for kids.

Magsaysay Park

davao city tour guide

Visit the famous Magsaysay Park. Located at the heart of the park is a 25-meter-long tri-pillar obelisk-like concrete tower that houses the life-size statue of President Ramon Magsaysay. Built by the Davao Chapter of the Philippine Veterans Legion, Magsaysay Park was turned over to the City Government of Davao on July 31, 1960.

davao city tour guide

You can also stroll at the park while you get a glimpse of an array of traditional houses and cultural customs from different group of lumad (or indigenous people) in Mindanao such as Subanen, T’boli, Manobo, B’laan and many more.

Freedom Park

davao city tour guide

Freedom Park is a free speech zone where public can form assemblies to exercise any form of freedom of expression. It consists of two parks: the Millennium Park, located in the center island along the stretch of Roxas Avenue across Ateneo de Davao University, and Clifford Park that covers the wide and spacious intersection of Claro M. Recto Street (old Claveria Street) and Roxas Avenue.

davao city tour guide

Just like any city in the Philippines, Rizal Park is also developed and maintained in Davao in honor of the country’s National Hero. Rizal Park is a favorite leisure spot by locals, an open space wherein you can feed some doves at Rizal Park. You’d encounter uncage birds freely flying lowly in this park.

davao city tour guide

Charcoal black ice cream is a must-try. Lot of “flavor-of-the-road” ice cream vendors are scattered around the park, just choose which one offers charcoal black ice cream. Cost: Php 10.00

Quezon Park

davao city tour guide

Right beside Rizal Park lies Quezon Park. It’s actually small compared to Rizal Park but it is well-landscaped and adorned with ornamental statues and attractions. Although their are public jeepneys with routes passing by the above-mentioned parks, they are nevertheless located close to each other so you don’t really have to spend fare to hop from one park to another.

City Hall of Davao

davao city tour guide

The City Hall of Davao is also a great structure to stage your selfies. Depicting the American architecture in the 1920s, the Davao City Hall was the latest infrastructure in the country declared as a historical site in 2012. Every December, the façade will transform into a wall flashed with art.

Sangguniang Panlungsod

davao city tour guide

Marvel at the unique architecture of Sangguniang Panlungsod. A monument was also built which depicts Katipuneros releasing doves in the air to symbolize freedom.

St. Pedro Cathedral

davao city tour guide

You can end your Davao City Tour by visiting San Pedro Cathedral. It is one of the famous Catholic Churches in the city and the busiest church of all, fronting the Davao City Hall along San Pedro Street, Davao City. The façade turns golden when the sunset hits the unique structure that seemingly resembles a stone ship that’s about to sail.

DAY 2: ISLAND HOPPING IN SAMAL

Have fun in the sun, sand and sea by joining an island hopping tour around Samal Island. The only island that’s near the metro and the go-to beach destination every weekend and holidays is no other than Samal Island. For as low as Php 450, you can experience a breathtaking island hopping activity on a budget!

davao city tour guide

Whether you’d prefer inland tour or island hopping, Samal Island is a spectacular attraction to visit. See separate article here: Samal Island and Talikud Island

Where To Eat in Davao

davao city tour guide

Since this is a budget travel guide, I recommend eating (and shopping) at Roxas Night Market. Aside from its accessibility, there are varieties of makeshift stalls and carts that offer both yummy and affordable street food choices that your tummy and pocket will surely thank you for. It is definitely a nirvana for bargain aficionado and savvy foodie.

Where To Stay in Davao

If you’re looking for a cheap accommodation with clean and decent amenities, then Homitori is right for you. For only Php 220.00, you can already reserve a slot as a bed spacer (bunk bed style, shared for 4 persons).

davao city tour guide

What is included in the Php 220? Air-conditioned room, essential bathroom and toiletry needs, wifi connection, security, and complimentary breakfast. For a super affordable price, you get a service that’s basically similar to that of hotels and resorts. Other services such as massage, laundry, gym, internet café and meeting rooms are also available. That’s what you call value for money!

davao city tour guide

Homitori is located at F. Bangoy St., corner Sta. Ana Avenue, Davao City. It is very near to Sta. Ana wharf where the boats for docking for the island hopping activities. Contact details are as follow:

Tel. No. (82) 295-2971 Mobile: (+63) 922 854 1127 (+63) 922 899 4646 Email: [email protected]

DIY Itinerary and Budget

Day 1: Arrival (Php 15 jeepney fare) Check-in at Homitori (Php 220) Davao City Tour (Php 20) Roxas Night Market (Php 50) Rest Day 2: Check-out at Homitori (leave baggage at counter) Island-Hopping (Php450 without food) Samal Island Talikud Island Departure (Php 15 jeepney fare)

How to Get to Davao

The fastest way to get to Davao is via air. There are a lot of local airlines with daily flights to Davao (Francisco Bangoy International Airport) from major cities in the country so choose your preferred flight schedule. From Davao Airport, you can take a jeepney (with Claveria route) going to Homitori, Sta. Ana, near Ramon Magsaysay Park. Jeepney fare is Php 15.00. Travel time is 30 minutes.

This is very helpful and comprehensive too. I love Davao City so much. You guys have a really rich culture. As a sucker for nature and birds, I really enjoyed the Malagos Garden Resort. I wonder why it is not in your list though? 🙁 But nevertheless, I really like Davao City!

' src=

Oh, too bad, I haven’t been there. Maybe soon? There’s a lot more destinations in Davao that are worthy to be visited when this pandemic subsides.

' src=

How do you get around Samal Island? Do you ride habal habal? Is it for rent for the whole day or you need to take different ride per destination? Do you have any contact po? Thank you!

You can hire a habal habal driver and drive you around the island. The fee will depend on your preferred itinerary (how far and how long will you explore the island)

There’s a lot of reasons to visit Davao City. It is the home of Philippine eagle; the basket of the king of all fruits, durian; the economic gateway of Mindanao – you name it! And, of course, it is the hometown of the president, our President Rodrigo Duterte.

This Davao City travel guide is aimed at giving you a list of top things to do in the city. In particular, this is intended for those who are planning for a 3-day or so vacation. So, hope you’ll find this guide useful.

Davao City is big. And I mean BIG. In fact, you can put about three Metro Manilas in it.  Thus, if you are planning for a short visit to the city, it makes sense that you strategize so that you can make the most out of your stay – i.e. you can visit and enjoy more attractions, given your limited time.

Top things to do in Davao City

Touring the city proper (poblacion).

There is no better way to learn more about Davao City – its rich history, the people, products, and the way of life of the locals – but to tour the city by foot. Visit the famous and important landmarks within the city proper such as the following:

  • The City Hall of Davao
  • The City Council Building (Sangguniang Panglungsod)
  • Davao Museum (Museo Dabawenyo)
  • San Pedro Cathedral (the oldest church in Davao City)
  • People’s Park (a public park – no entrance fee)
  • Roxas Night Market (Street food bazaar along Roxas Avenue)

‘Bonding’ with crocs at Davao Crocodile Park

Crocodile Park Davao City

After touring the city proper, the next activity you could have is to visit Davao Crocodile Park, located at Riverfront, Corporate City, Diversion Highway Ma-a, Davao City 8000 Philippines. There you can see crocodiles of various sizes, including the biggest one in captivity, Pangil . The park also houses other animal species like raptors, monkeys, bearcats, snakes, birds, and other reptiles. You will surely enjoy visiting the place most especially during animal exhibits. Apart from that, the facility also boasts of their butterfly garden. Plus, if you are visiting in the late afternoon or early evening, you might be able to witness fire dance presentation from  Tribu K’Mindawawan .

Go extreme at Outland Adventure Camp

Outland Adventure Camp - Ma-a, Davao City

If you wish to do some extreme outdoor activities, then head to Outland Adventure Camp – a facility that offers various outdoor activities including rope courses and zip lines, which are ideal for group team building activities or even for a small group wanting to have some fun. This facility is located along Diversion Road, Ma-a Davao City – a 30-minute taxi ride from the city proper.

Whitewater Rafting at Davao River

Whitewater Rafting at Davao River

If the extreme activities at Outland Adventure Camp makes you wanting more, then you can go even more extreme with whitewater rafting (aka wild river rafting) at Davao River. This blood-rushing, heart-pumping activity will surely leave your physical self exhausted but your spirit exalted with all the excitement that conquering the rapids gushing through the wide winding river brings you. Please note that this activity lasts about eight hours, so you need to dedicated a full day for this.

Visiting the Philippine Eagle Center and Malagos Garden Resort

Another must visit places in Davao City are the Philippine Eagle Center and Malagos Garden Resort. The former is an 8.4 hectare haven for the critically endangered Philippine Eagle and other birds of prey, mammals , and reptiles; it is located within the Malagos Watershed, at the foothills of Mt. Apo. The latter is a 12-hectare nature theme park located just a few distance away from the Philippine Eagle Center. If you want to breathe in cool mountain breeze and get even closer to nature, then you should not miss visiting the place. The resort cultivates a wide variety of plants, including the famous orchids, fruit trees, palms, and ornamental plants.

Engaging more with nature at Eden Nature Park

davao city tour guide

Located at the outskirt of the city, Eden Nature Park provides a relaxing escape from the hustle and bustle of the metropolis. Its high elevation (about 1000 meters above sea level) results a significantly cooler temperature that is comparable to that of Baguio City. Besides giving you a wonderful taste of nature, the park provides for extreme outdoor adventure as well such as its zip line and sky-cycling facilities. Tourists can also enjoy its swimming pool along with other amenities. Its fishing village gives an exciting treat as well. Indeed, Eden Nature Park is an ideal place to go to for those who are looking for a refreshing and enjoyable vacation.

Talicud Island Hopping

Talicud Island Hopping, Davao, Philippines

Davao, indeed, has its fair share of nature’s gift – from highland to island, as they say it. If going to beach is your thing (and I call it “beaching”), you should go for island hopping. There’s quite a number of travel and tour companies that offer island hopping packages that you can avail; you can go for a joiner tour as well. This activity usually starts at sunrise and ends at sundown; you will be touring beautiful spots around Talicud Island – white sand beaches, diving spots, islets – so be sure to dedicate a full day schedule for this activity.

Travel tips

  • Early booking is recommended to secure slots, most especially for activities in the resorts that are on a first come, first serve basis.
  • Ask and read brochure guide at the resort to ensure you do not miss the activity or attraction you most like.
  • It pays to preserve nature; do not litter (just a friendly reminder, guys 😀 )
  • Be friendly with locals; they are your buddies.

Travel Guide to Davao City & Samal Island: 2023 DIY Itinerary & Budget

Joana Paola Gutierrez

Whenever people talk about Davao City, we either hear from people who’s been there “ pakamusta kay tatay Digong ” or “ masarap ang durian dyan “. Furthermore, it has been marked to people’s minds that Davao is a province in the Philippines with one of the lowest crime rates. It is a place where you can do solo-traveling, ride a taxi at night without sending your families the plate number of the taxi or going to the night market while comfortably using your phones. As a result, traveling to Davao city and Samal Island DIY-way will surely give you the best and safest feeling on Earth!

To give you a bit of information, the region of Davao comprises 5 provinces namely (1) Davao del Norte , (2) Davao Oriental , (3) Davao del Sur , (4) Davao Occidental and (5) Davao de Oro . For my trip in this region, I was only able to explore the 2 provinces and the north and south since I had to go to Surigao for my next backpacking trip. Still, I had the best time seeing one of the stunning beaches and beautiful places in the 2 regions!

Getting to know Davao City and Samal Island

Davao in the Southern part of the Philippines is a very famous city in the Mindanao island and it is know to be home of Durian fruit. During my trip here, I can honestly say that wherever I go I always smell the fruit’s strong odor. And yes I think it’s the Durian capital of the Philippines, if there is such a thing, lol .

Is it safe to travel in Davao? The first thing I noticed during my first day was the incredible discipline and cleanliness of Davao. Courtesy of the previous mayor who is now the President of the Philippines of course. I think it’s really one of the safest places you can go on a vacation in the Philippines plus there are lots of things to do and see here!

What is the best time to visit in Davao City and Samal Island? The best time to visit in Davao is of course during summer or dry season in the Philippines which is from March – June . Although according to a local from Samal Island, they say that any month of the year is a good time to visit since typhoons and monsoon seldom hit the Southern part of the country. This is why they don’t have much reported climate disasters.

Pre-Travel Guide

Backpacking Davao or doing it the DIY-way is easy peasy lemon squeezy! Below are the relevant information you need to know or pre-travel guide for your upcoming trip. Learn how to travel to Davao city and Samal Islanf DIY way with my pre-travel guide!

Manila to Davao City

If you are coming from Manila, you can book flights from any local airlines like Cebu Pacific, Philippine Airlines and AirAsia for this route. Take note that the only airport in Davao is Francisco Bangoy International Airport (DVO) which is in Davao del Sur. There are no airports that caters public transportation in Davao Oriental or Davao del Norte.

General Santos to Davao City

Alternatively, you can ride a bus from General Santos to Davao via Yellow Bus Line . The fare usually ranges from PHP260.00 – PHP300.00 and the travel time is 3-4 hours. Below is the schedule and rates of the Yellow Bus Line.

Bislig to Davao City

Another famous gateway to get to Davao by land travel is from Bislig in Surigao del Sur. From Bislig, just proceed to the bus terminal and ride a bus bound to Davao Ecoland Terminal. The travel time is 4-5 hours and the fare is ranging from PHP360.00 – PHP410.00 .

How to get around Davao City and Samal Island?

Getting around Davao is easy especially in the city itself. For public transportation there are taxis available, jeepney , bus , van and tricycles too. For budget solo travelers, the jeepney is best to lessen the fees. But if you are in a group, therefore your best option is to ride a taxi to reduce the hassle and split the fare in the group.

Take note that traffic is also frustrating in Davao just like in Manila. In my experience, I traveled from Roxas City going to the port to Samal Island for about an hour. It was truly exhausting and a waste of time for me especially that I am in a time-sensitive trip. Better avoid the rush hours and be extra early if you need to be somewhere else.

How to get around in Samal Island? There are no taxis available in Samal Island. The only mode of transportation available by land is tricycle and habal-habal and bus.

Where to Stay in Davao City and Samal Island?

SEARCH FOR HOTEL DEALS ON AGODA

Where to stay in Samal Island? A word of advice, the accommodations in Samal Island are very pricey compared to the hotels in the city. If you are planning to do an overnight in Samal Island, I highly recommend Camp Holiday Resort. It’s just beside Samal Ferry Terminal and the price for 2 in a single bedroom is reasonable. The location will be very convenient if you need to leave early the next morning.

Furthermore, if you are looking for a resort you may check out in Isla Reta in Talicud Island or Kaputian Beach Resort in Samal Island.

Where to Eat in Davao City and Samal Island?

Roxas Night Market is the place for you when in Davao City! Enjoy grilled seafood of your choice and local street-foods too. If you’re up to try something new and unique, then you must try the durian-flavored foods like the buchi, durian ice cream and durian shake.

Where to eat in Samal Island? For backpackers, don’t worry because there are lots of cheap restaurants in the place! A budget of PHP50.00 – PHP100.00 is already reasonable!

Yays! Thanks for this guide. Might use this when I go there next week. 😎
