Champ de Mars
One of the grandest green spaces in Paris, the Champ de Mars stretches northwest to southwest from the foot of the Eiffel Tower to the Ecole Militaire. A symbol of military prowess and discipline, you can easily imagine soldiers parading down its long, wide "avenues," which are punctuated by an oblong plot of green at the center.
From the top of the French capital's most-famous tower it can be observed in its full grandeur. No wonder it made our list of the most interesting places to visit in the area . Read on for tips on how to enjoy this stately park and its surrounding attractions.
A Bit of History
Appropriately named after the Roman god of war, the Champ de Mars was once an agricultural site: a fact that helps explain why it appears so flat when viewed from panoramic heights. Fittingly, "champ" means "field" in French.
Ordinary Parisian citizens farmed small plots of land in the area, then known as the Grenelle, growing fruit and vegetables and selling them at onsite markets. Vineyards were also planted in the area when Paris was still a winemaking site.
This all changed around 1765, when planning began in the area for a prestigious military academy known as the Ecole Militaire . A new green space, featuring the precise sorts of symmetries popularized in formal French gardens at Versailles , the Tuileries and elsewhere, replaced the farm plots of old.
Several historical events have brought attention and renown to the second most-famous "Champ" of Paris (the first being the wide avenue known as the Champs-Elysées):
- The world's first hot-air balloon was launched from the park in 1783 — an exciting moment in the early history of aviation.
- Following the French Revolution of 1789, both festive and bloody events and took place on the Champ de Mars between 1790 to 1791. The first celebration of the holiday that would eventually be termed "Bastille Day" took place here, a year to the day after the storming of the prison on the Place de la Bastille. In 1791, a brutal massacre was perpetrated at the site.
- A guillotine was set up by the Revolutionary government on the Champ; the first mayor of Paris was executed here in 1793.
- The site also appears in many commemorative illustrations and other memorabilia marking the unveiling of Gustave Eiffel's bold new tower, during the Universal Exposition of 1889.
What to Do at the Park
As one of the most-recognizable sites in the French capital, the park is incredibly popular with tourists. Here's how to best enjoy it, no matter the season.
A stroll down the long, wide green expanse and gardens within can be pleasant year-round, except perhaps when the weather is at its coldest and wettest. Still, rain or shine, many tourists enjoy the excellent views of the Eiffel Tower from the Champ de Mars, and take advantage of the photo opportunities during a walk around the gardens.
In the spring and summer, sprawl out for a picnic on the lush lawns. We recommend that you stock up on typical French picnic goodies such as fresh, crusty baguettes, pastries, fresh fruit and charcuterie (cured meats) on nearby streets such as Rue Cler , famous for its shops and excellent bakeries.
If you're short on time, you can also buy a sandwich, crepe or other Parisian street foods from shops in the area and enjoy a casual outdoor meal on the grass after visiting the Eiffel Tower or the nearby area known as "Trocadero."
As you can imagine, this area can be very crowded due to the large numbers of visitors who flock to see the Eiffel Tower. It may be best to visit in the early mornings and on weekdays to beat the crowds and enjoy the "Champ" in relative peace and quiet.
It's obviously less crowded during the late fall and winter since low season means fewer tourists — but chilly winds and rain can make it less appealing to linger outdoors during these times.
The Champ de Mars is located in the 7th arrondissement of Paris , on the left bank of the Seine River. It is easily reached by metro or RER (commuter-line) train. The closest stop is Champ de Mars-Tour Eiffel (RER Line C).
If you're taking the metro (most tourists find it more convenient than the RER), the nearest stations are Ecole Militaire (Line 8) or La Motte Picquet-Grenelle (Line 6, 8 and 10). You can also get off at La Tour Maubourg near Les Invalides (line 9) and walk to the park from there.
What to See Around the Champ de Mars?
There's plenty to see and do around the park. Here are just a few sights and attractions we recommend you focus your time on.
Eiffel Tower: This one's an obvious but essential choice. Take the elevators to the uppermost observation decks, and gaze out at the Champ de Mars for some dizzying and grand panoramic views. Photo ops are excellent from up here, of course. You might also want to eat lunch or dinner at one of the tower's restaurants, to enjoy the views for even longer.
Palais de Chaillot and the Trocadero: After visiting the city's most-celebrated tower, head over to the nearby Palais de Chaillot , unveiled for the Universal Exposition of 1937. The sprawling plaza here affords more excellent views of Gustav's beloved tower, and several sites of note occupy the buildings. The Cité de l'Architecture houses an interesting collection devoted to architectural history, while the Musée de l'Homme is dedicated to anthropology. There's also a national theatre where dance performances are regularly held.
Palais de Tokyo and the Modern Art Museum of Paris: Modern art fans should spend some time perusing the innovative exhibits at the nearby Palais de Tokyo and Modern Art Museum of the City of Paris. These are two of the most important contemporary art museums in the French capital, and are well worth a look.
Galliera Fashion Museum: For something a bit off the beaten path, why not stop over at the nearby Palais Galliera ? The fascinating museum of fashion here puts on exhibits dedicated to style icons and designers that regularly sell out. On a sunny day, the garden out front, decorated with lush flower beds and elegant sculptures, is a lovely place to take a rest after a day of exploring the area.
Please note: This museum is currently closed for renovations and is expected to re-open in 2020.
Invalides and the Musée de l'Armée: Head over to the sprawling military complex known as Les Invalides to witness the tomb of Emperor Napoleon I, and see the collections of the adjoining Army Museum (Musée de l'Armée). From medieval armor and impressive swords to more modern artillery, including the Emperor's personal firearms, there's a wealth of objects to admire at this underrated museum.

Champs de mars, john doe -->.
Boasting one of the most surreal views of the Eiffel tower, the Champs de Mars Park is the Parisian destination for any and every tourist.
The Champs de Mars Park has the proud title of being Paris's largest green space spanning a total of sixty acres, just a bit bigger than the Jardin du Luxembourg, it runs from the Eiffel tower that is situated in the North-Western part of Paris to the École Militaire situated at the South-Eastern end of Paris. Originally it was a flat piece of land, called the Grenelle that was fragmented and claimed by locals who grew flowers, vegetables and fruits to sell at the local market, the soil, however, was not very fertile. It then became the training and marching grounds for the students that attended l'École Militaire, it was officially closed off to the public, as it would hold almost ten thousand men at one time whilst practicing their drills. It was then that the name changed to 'Champ de Mars' in reference to the roman god of war, which only seems appropriate in the context of a military school. However, towards the end of the 18th century, the fences on the borders of Champs de Mars were taken down and military sessions ceased resulting in the park once again being open to the public again. The Champs de Mars was host to many festivals and exhibitions, with one, in particular, resulting in the creation of the Eiffel tower, non-other than the Éxpositions Universelles, the World fair, hosted on the grounds between 1889 and 1900.
In the days of the Grenelle and military training sessions, the Champs de Mars was actually more than one hundred acres but was minimized to only 60 acres for the World Exposition that took place in 1880. Today the Champs de Mars is a wonderful picnic site, with nothing less than the Eiffel tower as its backdrop, what more could you ask for. There is no admission cost and it is open all day, every day. It is very popular among Parisians as there is a lot of open space to participate in activities, such a playing Frisbee for example and has many playgrounds for children. At night you could even get a front row seat to the beautiful light show displayed on the Eiffel tower for 0€. What would a trip to Paris be if you didn't lounge on the lawn, relaxing whilst reading one of your favorite books, with the full blown Parisian ambiance surrounding you? Considering it requires you to relax to enjoy the destination, it is one the best places to visit in Paris. It allows you to immerse yourself in an activity that the average Parisian would do on a normal day, giving you the idea of what it would be like to be Parisian and not just a tourist doing tourist things but actually embracing the culture and normality Paris has to offer as well. It is for these 'normal' reasons the Champ de Mars is one of the best places to visit in Paris.

Parc du Champ de Mars
Running southeast from the Eiffel Tower, the grassy Champ de Mars – an ideal summer picnic spot – was originally used as a parade ground for the cadets of the 18th-century École Militaire , the vast French-classical building at the southeastern end of the park, which counts Napoléon Bonaparte among its graduates. The steel-and-etched-glass Wall for Peace Memorial , erected in 2000, is by Clara Halter.
From 2021 to 2024 the park will host a temporary Grand Palais while the original undergoes Olympic renovations.

How To Have the Perfect Eiffel Tower Picnic in Paris
While dreaming of your Paris vacation, you’ve probably thought about sipping Champagne at cafes, shopping through French markets, and eating at the most romantic restaurants . But have you considered a picnic in Champ de Mars at the foot of the Eiffel Tower?
Don’t miss out on this unique, laid-back experience. In this article, I’ll share how to picnic at the Eiffel Tower, including what to bring, where to pick up supplies, and the best views.
What is the Champ de Mars?
The Champ de Mars is the largest public greenspace in Paris. This massive park sprawls from the Eiffel Tower at the northwest end to École Militaire at the southwest boundary. This park was also the main site for the 1878 World’s Fair and is still a gathering place for people from every corner of the globe.
Today, there are tons of activities and things to do in the park , including pony rides, flower gardens, and walking paths. Champ de Mars is also the go-to place to watch the tower’s nightly twinkling lights. During a visit to Champ de Mars, you can see everything from marriage proposals to outdoor yoga classes.
Best of all, it’s the perfect spot for a leisurely picnic with up-close views of the Eiffel Tower.
Visit the Eiffel Tower before or after your picnic
Why should i have a picnic in champ de mars.
Picnicking is a favorite pastime for Parisians. Because most apartments and homes in Paris are small, Parisians love spending lunchtime and weekend afternoons eating and socializing in parks, including the Champ de Mars.
I’ve seen everything from office workers eating quick sandwiches to families hauling out dining chairs and tables for birthday celebrations. Having a picnic is the perfect way to experience a slice of French life, take a break from a busy sightseeing schedule and see the Eiffel Tower from a new angle.
Best seasons for an Eiffel Tower picnic
Like visiting the Eiffel Tower, a picnic in the Champ de Mars is always a good idea, no matter the season . However, some seasons offer advantages when it comes to picnics.
Once spring arrives, Parisians head outdoors, so expect the Champ de Mars to be filled with locals and visitors.
Despite the crowds, spring is my favorite time for picnicking near the Eiffel Tower. From March to June, the views of the tower are even better, thanks to the fresh green grass, flowers, and cherry blossoms that fill Champ de Mars. Spring weather can be unpredictable in Paris. Days can alternate between rain showers, chilly temperatures, and heat waves. So check the forecast closely before settling on a day for your spring picnic.
Summer weather is more predictable, but the crowds are heavier during peak tourist season. More people in the park means even better people-watching, which can make for a more entertaining picnic.
Fall is also a lovely time for an Eiffel Tower picnic. The weather may call for a coat and scarf, but smaller crowds mean it will be easy to find a spot to spread your picnic blanket.
Sadly, in the winter, some of the grassy lawns of Champ de Mar may be fenced off to prevent people from trampling the grass. However, you should still be able to find a spot to sit at the edges of the park or on a bench.
Best days and times for a Champ de Mars picnic
When does your tummy start to rumble? That’s the best time to spread out for a bite to eat in front of the Eiffel Tower! But a picnic is more about the experience than just feeding yourself, so it makes sense to think about the time of day you’ll arrive.
A lunchtime picnic is an ideal way to break up a day of sightseeing. Many Parisians eat lunch outdoors around 1-2 p.m., so if you arrive around 11 a.m. or noon, you will miss some of the crowds. Champ de Mar is also a popular after-school hangout for teens, so expect to see more young people in the park starting at 4:30 p.m.
My favorite time to picnic at the Eiffel Tower is in the evening. I love arriving just in time for sunset, watching the sky soften and fade into darkness, and seeing the first display of the hourly twinkling lights .
Friday evening, Saturday, and Sunday are the most popular times for a Champ de Mar picnic. If you love people-watching as much as I do, weekends are the time to go. But if you want the best selection of spots and views, choose a weekday for your picnic. Parisian children don’t attend school on Wednesday afternoon, so the park is usually filled with families on that day.
Food for your Eiffel Tower picnic
What’s a picnic without food? Without some yummy bites, you’re just sitting in the grass. You can go the easy route and pick up a sandwich or crepe from one of the kiosks located right in the Champ de Mar. Many delis and cafes also offer prepacked picnics.
During the late spring and summer, Milagro offers Picnics To Go packages featuring meat, cheese, salad, wine, and dessert. Best of all, Milagro is just a hop, skip, and jump from Champ de Mars, so you won’t need to lug your picnic across the city.
However, I prefer to pack my own picnic by selecting fresh, local specialties. My favorite picnic foods are delicious, easy to eat, and aren’t messy. They’re also not hard to find at most French markets, including several convenient to the Eiffel Tower, just a metro ride or walk away. (More on where to shop for your French picnic supplies below.)
Here’s what I usually pack:
- A fresh baguette
- A selection of cheeses such as comté, chèvre (soft goat cheese), and camembert
- Fruit spreads, such as fig or apricot
- Seasonal fruits like grapes or strawberries
- Charcuterie or cured meats, such as prosciutto or salami
- Meat spreads like a terrine or pâté
- Bite-sized vegetables, such as grape tomatoes
- Pastries, such as a slice of opéra cake, tartlets (savory or sweet), and a few macarons
Shopping for Eiffel Tower picnic food at a grocery store
If you are a foodie like me, shopping for delicious nibbles will be just as fun as the picnic.
For one-stop shopping, head to Le Grande Épicerie . This gourmet grocery shop is part of the famed La Bon Marche department store.
Getting to Champ de Mars from Le Grande Épicerie is easy. Hop on metro line 10 from the Sevres – Babylone station to the La Motte – Picquet Grenelle station. Once at the shop, you will find everything you need for a luxurious picnic. Le Grande Epicerie features a bakery, pastry shop, massive cheese selection, and a wide variety of premade sandwiches and salads.
The downside to Le Grande Épicerie is its price point. For gourmet, you’ll be paying a bit more than you would at your average grocery store. If you’re looking for a thriftier place to picnic shop, I recommend the Carrefour City , located at 42 Avenue de la Motte Picquet. This petite grocery store is next to École Militaire at the southwest end of Champ de Mars.
Carrefour City is well stocked with fresh bread, chilled drinks (including wine,) premade sandwiches, fresh fruits, and paper goods. This market also has a respectable cheese selection so that you can have an authentic Parisian food experience without the heavy price tag.
Shopping for Champ de Mars picnic foods at local shops
Parisians adore shopping for food in small, local shops. If you prefer to shop like a local, you have a few options.
First, head to Rue Cler. This famous market street is open from Tuesday to Saturday and is a hit with visitors and locals. Along both sides of the road, you’ll find a wide range of specialty stores, such as cheese shops, bakeries, chocolatiers, and delis.
There’s so much here I love, but these are my favorites you shouldn’t miss:
- Charcuterie Jeusselin for sliced meats and savory foods
- A La Mere de Famille for chocolates
- Le Repaire de Bacchus for wine
Rue Cler is less than a 10-minute walk from Champ de Mars.
Another option for your Eiffel Tower picnic is shopping at an open-air food market.
Like a farmer’s market, Paris’s open-air markets feature vendor stalls selling fruits, vegetables, flowers, prepared foods, and everything else you can imagine.
Each neighborhood has its own market, which pops up two days a week. The closest to the Eiffel Tower is the Grenelle Market, which is open on Wednesday and Sunday mornings. I recommend picking up a roasted chicken and potatoes cooked in the drippings. The Grenelle Market is located on Boulevard de Grenelle, a 10-minute walk from Champ de Mars.
What else to bring for an Eiffel Tower picnic
Aside from food, you will need a handful of other things for the perfect Eiffel Tower picnic.
Most importantly, you will want a picnic blanket. Of course, you can sit directly in the grass (and you will see many people doing just that.) I don’t personally enjoy soggy pants from sitting on damp ground, so I always pack a thin, lightweight, waterproof blanket that folds down into a pocket-sized pouch. If you don’t want to squeeze a picnic blanket into your luggage, pick up a tablecloth or oversized scarf anywhere in Paris.
Other than a picnic blanket, you will want:
- Plastic glasses
- Wine opener
- Disposable cutlery
- Sunglasses, hat, and sunscreen (There is little shade in Champ de Mars.)
- Reusable shopping bag to pack everything in
The best meal at the Eiffel Tower
After three years of living in Paris, I still think picnicking at Champ de Mars is the best way to spend a lazy Saturday afternoon. When I host guests, I always take them for an evening of munching on cheese and baguettes at the foot of the Eiffel Tower.
I think a picnic is one of the best meals you can have at the Eiffel Tower, the perfect pick-me-up after a guided climb to the second floor (or an energizer before your climb).
But sometimes you might not feel like a casual meal on the lawn. For something completely — and I do mean completely different — try the Jules Verne Restaurant inside the Eiffel Tower. It’s fancy, luxurious, and definitely not a meal where you’ll be using plastic spoons. Read our guide to the Jules Verne Restaurant for tips on what to expect.

Stade Tour Eiffel
