The 10 Best Motorcycle Travel Books

Let’s face it, we all need a bit of a kick up the backside from time to time. When it comes to motorcycle adventures, one thing that stops us from making our own adventure is that it’s all too easy to believe that you need to have a fully-loaded BMW GS Adventure, a healthy bank account and the luxury of time. You don’t need any of those. Well, maybe time, but you can have an memorable adventure in just 24 hours.

Unfortunately motorcycle travel has been whitewashed. Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman don’t live in the real world and – contrary to what you might believe – they didn’t invent motorcycle adventure travel, they merely twisted it for the highly-polished social media generation. Now, people believe you need a £20,000 Adventure motorcycle to have the trip of a lifetime.

Of the people I’ve spoken to who’ve done ‘that big motorcycle trip’ , most planned it so thoroughly. Every ferry crossing, every route, every hotel – all booked in advance, the one thing they forgot was: to have an adventure. The family and friends back home got a day-by-day airbrushed update on social media while the rider spent more time worrying about making their next check-point than worrying about how they can avoid ever having to go home.

It’s in danger of being the modern-day version of a coach tour to the Costa del Sol. At one time, that was seen as being a bit off-the-wall.

So take this list of inspirational motorcycle adventure books as exactly what it is: a one-million word kick up the backside, designed to inspire you to take your motorcycle and go somewhere different. The common thread in all of these stories is that the writer had wanderlust, wanted to explore, took each day as it came and kept the planning to a minimum.

So go on, buy one of these books and start your adventure.

The Razor's Edge—Jeff Hughes

To many riders, a motorcycle represents speed first and foremost. One of them is Jeff Hughes, an established speed demon and moto journalist.

The Razor’s Edge is a collection of Hughes’ stories originally published in the Sport Rider magazine. These 53 tales chronicle his love (and self-proclaimed addiction)  to sport bikes and pushing them to their limits.

In his stories, Hughes shares his views and insights on motorcycling, particularly when it comes to going as fast as possible. He often courts danger and disaster as he flies down the highway in his never-ending quest to find the ultimate high-speed thrill. He also doles out advice on what speedy riders should and should not do.

Not every rider can or should ride as fast as Hughes. But this book lets you take the pillion seat on his sport bike—if you dare.

Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance—Robert Pirsig

Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance is one of the most legendary motorcycling books ever written, and for a good reason. On the surface, it details a summertime bike trip Pirsig, his son, and a couple of friends took across the U.S.

Yet, this book is much more than that. Over the course of the book, the acts of riding and maintaining a motorcycle transform into philosophical explorations of the fundamentals of the human experience.

Blending science, religion, philosophy, and common everyday logic, Pirsig details his travels while questioning everything about the people he meets and, above all, himself.

Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance was an instant classic upon its publication in 1974 and its just as famous today. If you ride motorcycles and haven’t yet read this book, get it on your reading list now.

(PS: After finishing the book, check out our ZenMoto article series where John Flores follows Pirsig’s route on his own quest to inner peace.)

Throughout his life, McQueen maintained a sizeable stable of various bikes. In this opus, Matt Stone details the star actor’s love affair with motorcycling, with a focus on the bikes he owned.

From Harley-Davidsons to Triumphs, Stone presents each bike in its historical context. Accompanied by high-quality photography, he explains when and how the motorcycles related to McQueen’s life.

Get ready for a ride down Memory Lane. These Are the Good Old Days is filled with motorcycling stories covering the past 70 years.

Fred “Bro” Smith recalls his experiences racing bikes in the ‘50s, while Wayne Hosaka tells us tales from the ‘60s and Steve Kukla returns to the ‘70s. These articles were originally published in the S&S Off-Road Magazine but have now been collected into one convenient volume.

These Are the Good Old Days is a must-buy for veteran riders who experienced the stories’ events themselves. Who knows, maybe they’ll stir a memory that has sat forgotten on the shelves of your mind for decades.

This book is a worthy read for new motorcyclists as well. It’ll help you connect with the past and understand how we got to where we are now.

The Motorcycle Diaries—Che Guevara

Before he became Che, Ernesto Guevara was a 23-year-old medical student who embarked on a motorcycle journey of a lifetime. Astride a coughing 1939 Norton 500cc motorcycle dubbed La Poderosa— Mighty One—he traversed the South American coast up to Peru, Colombia, and eventually Miami, FL.

The Motorcycle Diaries recounts Guevara’s thoughts over this immense undertaking. He comments on the rigors of traveling by motorcycle with his severe asthma, the incredible sights he saw, and the various injustices he witnessed.

This book is equally a motorcycling travel story, a description of Latin America’s underbelly in the 1950s, and a tale of how a promising doctor transformed into a revolutionary.

How to Build a Motorcycle—Gary Inman

Have you always wanted a custom motorcycle but never quite knew where to start? Fret no more. How to Build a Motorcycle is your guide to the world of custom bikes.

This in-depth guidebook goes over every aspect of customizing motorcycles. It teaches you how to choose a project that matches your skills, how to find a suitable base bike, and how to crack it open to tinker with its parts.

The lessons in this book are charmingly illustrated by Adi Gilbert, a famed bicycle and motorcycle illustrator whose work has appeared in Harley-Davidson commercials and bike magazines.

How to Build a Motorcycle is a fantastic starting point for any aspiring gearhead dreaming of their first custom. Even if customs aren’t your thing, the step-by-step instructions and fun drawings can help you understand your standard stallion better.

The Motor-Cycle of the Past

What is a motorcycle? We all think we know the answer, but to truly understand two-wheelers, we must look into their past.

The Motor-Cycle of the Past collects various books, pamphlets, and magazine articles between a single cover. Dating back to the early 1900s and beyond, these rare works offer us modern riders a glimpse into what our forebears thought of their machines.

This volume includes explorations of the mindset of early riders, travel stories, and more. It highlights in a unique way how advances in motorcycle technology have changed our perception of them—and how some things have always been and probably will remain the same.

The Moment Collectors

We all have our favorite motorcycling moments. In this book, 20 authors share theirs from rides all around the world.

The Moment Collectors features stories that truly span the globe. From the frigid Alaskan highways to the beaches of Mexico, from the Mongolian plains to the peaks of the Andes, there’s no environment these globetrotting riders don’t tackle.

Their recollections of their travels tell of the joys, challenges, highs, and lows of what they encountered on the road. In addition, the book contains 70 illustrations and 20 photographs to bring the stories to life.

The Moment Collectors is one book that no one interested in international travel—two-wheeled or otherwise—should miss.

Into Africa—Sam Manicom

Before Sam Manicom embarked on his cross-Africa motorcycling trip, he had to solve a small problem. He had no idea how to ride a motorcycle.

This bizarre premise sets the stage for what you can expect from Into Africa . Having learned to ride in just three months, Manicom plunges on an astounding 22,000-mile moto expedition from Cairo to Cape Town.

Rolling, swerving, and drudging through 14 countries, he encounters the complete scale of human experience, from absolute joy to crushing misery. He doesn’t sugarcoat the difficulties and challenges, but he also doesn’t detract from the humor and generosity of the people he meets.

There’s a reason Into Africa is an award-winning motorcycle travel story. It brings an incredible undertaking to life in a way few books can.

Jupiters Travels—Ted Simon

Ted Simon is a man of many talents. He has restored a 13th-century French ruin, developed new organic agriculture techniques—and he has ridden a motorcycle around the world.

Jupiter Travels is Simon’s recounting of his motorcycling journey across the globe, an incomprehensible feat in the 1970s. He spent four years on the road, motoring through 45 countries over 78,000 miles.

During his journey, he encountered peaceful country villages and cities torn apart by civil wars. He spent nights among peasants and presidents, sometimes sleeping on the floor of a rural hut and other times on a prison bench.

Jupiter Travels is one of the most influential motorcycling travel stories of all time, having inspired Ewan McGregor and many nameless intrepid moto adventures alike. There’s no way to describe this book in detail in the space we have here—you’ll just have to read it for yourself.

For anyone interested in serious motorcycle adventure travel I suggest following the ongoing tales of Simon and Lisa Thomas. This couple has been riding around the world for about six years and are still going. They have a great web site at: http://www.2ridetheworld.com . I heard them speak in New Hampshire a little more than a year ago while they were touring the U.S. It was an afternoon I will never forget. They are talented story tellers and take breathtaking photographs.

You can also post on my new motorcycle blog, http://www.tyleryandowmotorcycleworld.wordpress.com .

it is really great to become a motorcycle lover, i collect different moyorcycles from different countries.;”;

' src=

Well Bob I personally liked your rant, the “how to” often leaves me confused and wondering how to put it all together in a picture in my mind. Your “rant” gave me the framework and now I can go to the how to with much more confidence.

' src=

i like to ride on fast motorcycles like the Ducati or even the fast bikes of Honda,-*

' src=

Oh I adore motorcycles and I do wish I had the courage to take my vacations by bike! I am afraid though that I am limited to just my scooter to travel in my local area. Oh well, it is better than a push bike.

' src=

It is possible to drive that scooter a long way. Have a friend who traveled from the east of Turkey all the way through Iran and back on a moto scooter.

' src=

me and my dad always love to ride motorcycles, we also have a motorcycle shop at home ‘-:

The 12 Best Motorcycle Books

But life without risks is surely a boring life; and despite other people’s constant bellowing about these dangers, we still long to mount and ride a motorcycle . It gives us the necessary thrill and fulfillment that we seldom get from other hobbies. But to many of us, motorcycling is not simply a hobby but a passion that we can never really live without.

Being passionate about motorcycling, we long to master and know everything about it; we want to devour every book about it, perusing and scrutinizing its every page, and gobbling up every detail and news about the bikes we love. So, if you’re one of us who are also a motorcycle enthusiast, here is a varied list of 12 of the most popular motorcycle books that can you buy.

Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance: An Inquiry into Values by Robert M. Pirsig

This book powerfully illustrates how we can live a quality life. It also contrasts quality life with how we really live and spend our lives. Written in the first-person point of view, this fictional autobiography is about two friends with contrasting personalities and philosophies in life. As a first-person narrative, the author tells about a fictional motorcycle road trip, while explaining the varying viewpoints using the motorcycle as his focal point of argument. He also shows the readers some technical knowhow on motorcycles, while vividly presenting how a life should be lived pragmatically.

First published by William Morrow and Company in 1974, the Zen and Art of Motorcycle Maintenance is a very powerful and influential book that has sold at least five million copies to date and is still selling. It is a book not just for motorcycle enthusiasts but also for people who want to know what living is all about. The book is available in hardbound, paperback, and Kindle formats.

Jupiter’s Travels: Four Years Around the World on a Triumph by Ted Simon

This biographical book vividly narrates the author’s adventure when Ted Simon rode his motorcycle — a 500cc Triumph Tiger 100 — around the world. This motorcycle journey happened in the 1970’s, and lasted for four long years. He covered a distance of around 78,000 miles or about 125,530 kilometers. This journey also spans 45 countries and six continents.

While it is true that the author had to cross large bodies of water during the trip, we can’t forget that most of his journey was made on motorcycle at a time when nobody had even dared to engage in this kind of adventure.

Jupiter’s Travels was first published in 1979 and has ever since been considered as a very influential book. Since the first appearance of the book, many people have been inspired by it, including well-known celebrities such as Ewan McGregor (young Obi Wan Kenobi in the Star Wars franchise). We’ll see a book by McGregor next. Other celebrities were inspired to document their adventures on film.

Jupiter’s Travels is offered in paperback and hardcover prints as well as in Kindle formats.

Long Way Round: Chasing Shadows Across the World by Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman

Inspired by the book above, Jupiter’s Travels , British movie star Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman embarked on a less ambitious but meaningful trip that was documented for both book readers and TV watchers. The trip was undertaken to promote humanitarian efforts for UNICEF (the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund). McGregor and his crew traveled eastward on their motorcycles from London to New York. The journey lasted for more than three months covering the distance of 19,000 miles (31,000 kilometers) across three continents.

The book Long Way Round is a travelogue that provides a detailed look at travel experiences along the harshest environments of the world. The book also features entries from diaries, maps, charts, and dozens of photographs that document the group’s journey.

Long Way Round is currently available in paperback and Kindle formats.

One Man Caravan by Robert Edison Fulton, Jr.

One Man Caravan is one man’s account of his journey halfway around the world from Britain to Japan. The author, Robert E Fulton, took to the world stage by travelling unsupported across Europe to the Middle East, then across South Asia to Japan, spanning around 25,000 miles or 40,000 kilometers, across 22 nations of two continents, lasting for 18 months.

In this book, Fulton recounts his solo journey on a customized Douglas Twin motorcycle equipped with an extra fuel tank and stowage for his luggage and a movie camera with 40,000 feet of film.

One Man Caravan is a travelogue first published in 1937. It subsequently underwent three editions in the span of only two years. The book has gained positive reviews from the New York Times for its uncomplicated approach and writing style. Despite being an older book, One Man Caravan is still a fan favorite and is still available in paperback.

The Motorcycle Diaries: Notes to a Latin American Journey by Ernesto “Che” Guevara

Written by none other than the illustrious revolutionary Che Guevara during his early adult life, this book is more of a memoir than a diary as the title suggests. In this book, Guevara and a friend, Alberto Granado, set out to explore the whole of South America on motorcycles. It was during this journey and after witnessing all the social injustices (the exploitation of the poor peasants and laborers, the segregation of lepers as well as of the ethnic minorities, and the branding of social reformers as communists) that Guevara galvanized his belief in revolution and the unification of South America.

The book was originally titled Diarios Motocicleta and was first published in Cuba and was later translated into English by Alexandra Keeble entitled The Motorcycle Diaries: Notes on a Latin American Journey . This book edition was published by Ocean Press and Che Guevara Studies Center in Havana, Cuba in 2003, and it included an introduction by a renowned Latin American poet, Cintio Vintier, and a preface by Guevara’s daughter, Aleida Guevara March.

Running with the Moon: A Boy’s Own Adventure: Riding a Motorbike through Africa by Jonny Bealby

Running with the Moon is a tale of a man’s struggle after the loss of a loved one and his endeavor to overcome deep grief and find a purpose in life. While travelling in Northern India, Belby was overwhelmed by the untimely death of his fiancée, Melanie. To lessen his grief and ultimately master his emotional despair, Belby, with some encouragement from a friend, decided to take a solo motorcycle ride around the African continent. The trip gave Belby a chance to see the world and, at the same time, get a respite from his previous struggle. In the process, he saw the purpose of life.

Running with the Moon is travel literature that encompasses two separate events in the life of the author. The book displays the human struggle that follows when the person you love most suddenly dies. Even when all seems lost and pointless, the author shows us that we cannot let grief take hold of our lives. Life must continue despite the pain.

First published in 1995 by Arrow Books, Running with the Moon is available in paperback print format.
