About hunting in Alaska

The word Alaska means “The Great Land,” and the state’s nickname is “The Last Frontier.” Both are appropriate monikers for a state containing huge swaths of wild country and uninhabited areas—a true hunter’s paradise, home to North America’s largest and most sought-after game animals. Covering 365,000,000 acres, an area one-fifth the size of the entire United States, Alaska has plenty of room for the adventurous hunter to roam. Alaska has more than a dozen species of big-game animals as well as excellent small game and waterfowl hunting opportunities. Big-game species include bison, caribou, elk, muskox, wolves, black bears, Dall sheep, moose, brown and grizzly bears, Sitka black-tailed deer, and mountain goats. Most hunting in Alaska occurs between August and October, but bears may be taken in either fall or spring in some locations. Alaska requires nonresidents hunting brown/grizzly bears, Dall sheep, or mountain goats to be accompanied by an Alaska-licensed guide or by an Alaska resident at least 19 years of age who is a close relative, defined as within the "second degree of kindred.” Nonresident aliens are required to have a guide to hunt any big-game animal in Alaska. All big-game guides in Alaska must be licensed by the state. For some hunts in Alaska, it is possible to hire a transporter instead of a guide. These are licensed individuals and companies who help hunters get to remote areas by bush plane, boat, horse, ATV, snow machine, etc. The Alaska Department of Fish & Game ( adfg.alaska.gov ) has an excellent website with in-depth information about hunting in the state. Check the site for specific license and tag requirements for each species. The Alaska Professional Hunters Association is another great source of information about Alaska: alaskaprohunter.org .

As we all know in hunting there are endless variables beyond our control (weather, game movement, and of course Mr. Murphy and Lady Luck) when it comes to a hunting trip, but there are also many that we can control (gear, mental and physical preparedness) to increase our odds for success and a more enjoyable experience. Bill's Alaska Bear Hunt

Alaska Big Game Hunting,  operated by retired Alaska Master Guide Tony Lee, specializes in brown bear , grizzly, moose , black bear and dall sheep .

In 1969 Tony came to Alaska with the simple goal of having one of the top outfitting services in the state. After learning to fly in 1972 and later purchasing a Super Cub, he paid his dues as assistant guide for several years. In 1979 he earned his Licensed Registered Guide status (#498) and then became a Master Guide (license #105), and owner of Westwind Guide Service. With 100% effort he reached his original goal and has many satisfied clients with record class trophies.

You can be assured we’ll do everything we can to make your Alaska hunting trip a great experience! We’re a small family-operated outfitting service based in the Shotgun Hills and Nushagak Hills of Alaska. The far outpost of our hunting area is 300 air miles off the road system and located at the top of the Alaska Peninsula. All of our hunts are conducted in unit 19, 17, and 13 and we have been hunting these areas for the last 35 years, which is literally our backyard, our knowledge of this area is second to none.

Our old school philosophy of offering great service at a fair price has worked well for us. By only taking a few hunters each year we have maintained a high success ratio on trophy class animals. I’m confident we can provide you with a great quality Alaska hunting experience.

Because of the financial investment and personal dreams a hunt like this represents to you, we encourage you to contact our references. We offer you uncompromising efforts to give you the highest quality hunt ever.

Hunt AK Outfitters is an Alaska Big Game hunting outfit offering fully guided hunts for Grizzly Bear, Moose, Dall Sheep and Caribou.

We have been in business since 1992. We are avid big-game hunters, and Jim guides several of the hunts along with some of the best guides in the business.

ALaska Grizzly Bear Hunt

  • Our bears averages between 7 to 9 feet.
  • Spring hunts run from May 1st to June 15.
  • Fall hunts are from September 1 – 25.

Call 1 (907) 230-5130 to reserve your Alaska bear hunting trip.

The best time to book a bear hunt with us is in the Spring from May 1 to June 15.

For fall hunts, we like you to be available from September 1 to September 25.

Interior Grizzlies or smaller than their Brown Bear counterparts on the coast, but the hair and colors are unmistakable.

During some of our hunts, you usually will not see another human. This is good as bears have a very good sense of smell and do not tend to stay in areas that have a high concentration of humans around.

Alaska Dall Sheep Hunt

  • Alaska Range
  • Rams typically range from 37 to 42 inches
  • Travel through the Alaska Range on horseback across rolling hills and valleys.
  • Enjoy a secluded hunting area.
  • Must be in decent shape

Call 1 (907) 230-5130 to reserve your Alaska Dall Sheep hunting trip.

Our sheep hunts are based out of the Alaska Range. We have an excellent number of sheep in the area. Our rams typically range from 37 to 42 inches. The genetics for our sheep are a little different than other ranges in Alaska and Canada. Our sheep do not drop low below the jaw on all sheep, but they make up for this by flaring out at the tips with age. Some sheep flair up to 4 inches, which makes for a beautiful trophy.

Our areas are not exclusive, but we typically do not see many hunters in our area during our hunts.

The terrain is rolling hills and valleys, which is where the horses come in. Above that, up to 7500 feet are the mountains of the Alaska Range.

We have hunted this country for over 40 years, and we know the mountains and the trails that take us to the sheep.

Do you need to be in shape, yes, do you need to be a mountain goat, no!

Alaska Moose Hunt

  • We hunt by horseback
  • Spot and stalk and moose calling
  • Season runs from September 1 to September 25

Call 1 (907) 230-5130 to reserve your Alaska moose hunting trip.

Our moose hunting area is some of the best in the state! We have a very good number of Bulls and Cows in the Area.

Our Season starts on September 1 and closes September 25. We typically average moose from 55 to 70 inches. On a typical hunt, you can expect to see several different moose.

We do this in several ways. Sometimes glassing by horseback, other times spot and stock.

Calling moose in is one of the most memorable hunts you will have.

Our area is off-limits to motorized vehicles. You will not see any off-road vehicles during your hunt with us!

Alaska Caribou Hunt

  • Caribou hunts are on a draw only basis.
  • If you want to target a Caribou we recommend getting in touch with us early in the year prior to your hunt.

Call 1 (907) 230-5130 to reserve your Alaska caribou hunting trip.

Caribou hunts are on a draw only basis. If you want to target a caribou, we recommend getting in touch with us early in the year prior to your hunt. This will give us time to help you submit for the Alaska state drawing, which will be held in December. We help you through the submission process, so if successful, you will be hunting with us in the fall of the following year.

The great thing about hunting with us for caribou is that we have resident herd. They do not leave the country for months at a time. If you have hunted caribou before you understand what I am saying, a migrating herd may be hard to keep up with in other areas.

Your hunt could be a camping trip if they are not in your area for the dates you booked your hunt. Not a problem here!

Client Reviews

I have been blessed in my 52 years to have traveled most of North America, most of this travel involved hunting. I have hunted with Jim Nabulsi and Hunt AK Outfitters for Sheep and Moose in their exclusive hunting area. Both of my trips there were fantastic. The game I took there hangs proudly in my living room today. Jim and his guides, along with the camp cook, have always been very friendly, professional, and responsive. I would recommend him and his team to anyone. The venue they have there at camp on the banks of the river is absolutely incredible.

Thank you for an incredible experience! I’ve known a few guys who’ve paid a lot and ended up going home empty handed. The only way I can imagine that happening with Hunt AK Outfitters is if you can’t shoot!

Greatest hunting adventure of my life. The meals were top quality. The guides are the toughest men I have ever met, tenacious and dedicated. Saw a lot of wildlife. The amenities at camp were so good I had to remember we were in a true wilderness.

Hunting In Alaska

You will experience the finest in Big Game Hunting and Sport-Fishing that Alaska has to offer. From the Salmon rich streams of southeast Alaska’s majestic rain forests to the mighty Yukon River Valley, our 25 years of experience ensures an Alaskan adventure of a lifetime.

We are dedicated to the Alaska bound adventure traveller and have successfully guided our clients to the most productive big game rich areas of the state.

Wilderness Enterprises offers unparalleled personal service and we dedicate our business to the success and enjoyment of your big game or sport-fishing trip.

Joe Letarte came to Alaska in 1979 and has been involved in the Hunting in Alaska industry since that time. Joe has a Master Guide license with experience spanning from the Brooks Range to the Alaska Range, and from the Aleutians to most of Southeast Alaska. With knowledge of hunting in such a vast area, it has enabled Joe to select the best game rich areas in the state to conduct his business. Currently, hunts are conducted in three geographically different locations, the Alaska Range, the Yukon River Valley and the Tongass National Forest.

Hunting in the Alaska Range, the focus is on Dall Sheep, Moose, Interior Grizzly, Caribou, Wolf, and Wolverine. This area in the heart of the majestic Alaska Range features broad valleys, sprawling glaciers and abundant game populations that offer quality trophies in an unspoiled wilderness setting.

In the Tongass National Forest, our operations are based out of Yakutat. This is one of the most game-rich areas in the world, hosting large populations of Brown Bears, Black Bears, Mountain Goat and the largest Salmon runs found in Alaska. This coastal wilderness of old-growth Sitka Spruce in the forelands gives way to the Glacier-strewn valleys of the Brabazon Mountains, then rises up toward the majestic St. Elias Range. This mystical wilderness is home to a rare color phase of the Black Bear known as the Glacier Bear only to be found in this area.  Alaska Wilderness Enterprises is an equal opportunity provider operating under permit from the Tongass National Forest.

Our third area of operation is in the Yukon River Valley. This particular area is one of the most remote wilderness areas left on earth. Our concession of 4.3 million acres is one of the largest Black Bear concessions in the world. This wetland is ideal habitat for Black Bear and hosts the largest population of Black Bear found in North America. The cinnamon color phase is quite abundant in this area also, so along with the large number of Black Bear, this allows for a bag limit of three bears per hunter. A good population of Interior Grizzlies also hold claim to this remote wilderness area.

Straight From TOM

Are you ready.

Tom Karshekoff was a senior Alaska hunting guide, a mentor and good friend. He was always the first one up in the morning, making coffee and tea. It could be blowing 40, foggy and raining. Tom would look at us and jokingly say “Are You Ready.” It would always get a smile or two from us.

Tom passed away right before JD Richardson (the owner) was able to take his registered Alaska hunting guides license exam. Upon passing the exam, JD and family were trying to come up with the name of our new Alaska bear and moose hunt venture.

JD’s oldest son who had guided with Tom for 4 years said “what about Are You Ready Adventures?” Right away we said yes! In our way “Are You Ready Adventures” was born to honor a world class guide, an excellent mentor and good friend with one of his favorite saying’s.

Alaska Caribou Hunts

Professionally guided fly-in caribou hunts in alaska’s arctic, caribou hunts.

Every year, we start our fall hunting season in August providing guided Caribou hunts. Our Caribou camps are located on high alpine lakes that are well used travel corridors. Typically we will take 2 guests per camp and plan for 8 days of hunting. Hunting is done within walking distance of our centrally located camp. The nearby tundra ridges make for great vantage points allowing us to spot migrating Caribou in all directions. Because they are such fast travelers and seldom linger in one spot for long, we focus our efforts in well known pinch points along the Caribou migration routes. Due to the unpredictable nature of Caribou migrations we have seen a wide range in the number animals per day. On several occasions, we have gone days without seeing a bull, to only then have literally over a thousand animals migrate through the valley in a single day!

Thanks to the healthy population and phenomenal camp locations we have nearly a 100% success rate on our guided caribou hunts.

Near camp, berry patches are a great place to find an arctic grizzly. Both bear and wolves can be harvested during our guided caribou hunts. Both predator species are found in higher numbers around the migrating Caribou, often following the herd. Fall bears are especially active as they fatten up for the coming winter. Bumper berry patches are generally good spots to find a bear along with any Caribou kill sites. A typical mature boar in the area will squire 7’ while some go over 8’. Although usually paler than their southern cousins they come in a wide range of coloration from reddish brown to the stereotypical “Toklat grizzly”.

Accommodations

Although there are many factors outside of our control during an Alaskan hunt, there are measures we take to insure a comfortable stay no matter what Mother Nature decides to throw at us. Camps are strategically placed to insure solid hunting locations within a close walking distance. As most of our falls hunting camps are accessed via float plane, we are typically set up on or near a lake shore. Guests are housed in canvas Sibly tents, heated with a wood stove and furnished with cots. A cook/mess tent is also set up to allow comfortable dining during adverse weather conditions. We take great efforts to prepare home cooked breakfasts and dinners that will satisfy any hungry hunter. While out hunting, lighter pack lunches are packed. All camps are supplied with at least one satellite communication device and appropriate survival gear.

Travel and Logistics

All of our guided trips originate in Fairbanks Alaska. We suggest booking a flight with an arrival date at least one day before the start date of your trip. There are several options of hotels near the airport that provide shuttle services. On day one of your trip we will pick you up at your hotel. If you have not already purchased your hunting license and tags, we will stop by Fish and Game before leaving town. From Fairbanks, we drive four hours north to Circle City. In this small rural community, your pilot will meet you with the float plane on the Yukon River. Most of our camps are accessed via float equipped Cessna 180. As we have to follow the strict laws of gravity, we ask that you keep your gear under 60lbs. Most flights to camp are an hour to an hour and a half. Due to the unpredictability of Alaska’s weather it is best to leave some flexibility in your travel plans. At times, delays of several days may occur due to severe weather keeping our airplanes grounded.

alaska hunting trip

All of our guides are highly experienced and professional. Owner, Charlie Jagow, was raised hunting and trapping in the region, this experience has given him, not only knowledge of the area, but also a personal connection to the refuge and its wild places. Many of our hunting guides also live in the bush and have a life time’s experience worth of hunting in the Arctic. Hunting is a way of life for us. There are no schools or college courses available to train a guide; instead, this highly skilled profession is only learned from hands-on experience and apprenticeship. All of our guides have dedicated themselves to perfecting these skills. Guiding is not a job for us, it’s a passion. We love assisting our guest in the pursuit of a life time!

There are opportunities to fish in most of our hunting camps. Some of the smaller rivers provide some of the best grayling fishing the state has to offer. Many of our lake camps are inhabited by both pike and graying. Light tackle, spinners and spoons are our choice for catching both species.

State Sales Tax Holidays Mean Savings Happen Year-Round

Get everything from dishwashers to chainsaws and kayaks for less.

Maura Kelly Lannan,

Various items that may be subject to state tax holiday

States With Tax Holidays

Alabama • Alaska • Arkansas • Connecticut • Florida • Iowa • Louisiana • Maryland • Mississippi • Missouri • Nevada • New Jersey • New Mexico • Ohio • Oklahoma • Puerto Rico • South Carolina • Tennessee • Texas • Virginia • West Virginia

Want to save a little more at the cash register? Shoppers can take advantage of state sales tax holidays throughout the year and skip paying the tax on certain purchases.

Twenty states and Puerto Rico offer sales tax holidays on products ranging from energy-efficient appliances to items like batteries and flashlights needed to prep for a disaster . Need a kayak or surfboard this summer? How about a new computer for your college student or ski boots for your next vacation? Some states have you covered.

These no-tax sales events can be days, weekends or even a full year in which states don’t charge that extra bit on particular items. Most of the holidays fall into three categories: disaster preparedness, energy-efficient appliances and back-to-school – and you don’t have to have a child or be in school yourself to take advantage. In some states, shoppers can find deals on clothes and shoes, art supplies or backpacks.

More About Taxes in Your State

Get the details on how much you'll pay with our state tax guides .

Tax-free holidays have both fans and naysayers. Proponents like Maryland Comptroller Brooke Lierman say consumers use sales tax holidays to keep more money in their wallets and stimulate the economy. When Maryland residents buy an energy-efficient dishwasher during the tax holiday, for example, it’s “a win for their pocketbooks [and] a win for our energy needs and for the environment,” she says.

Critics note that only certain items are included and the economy only sees a shift in buying patterns, not a boost. “A better policy might be to reduce the rate and broaden the [tax] base,” said Manish Bhatt, senior policy analyst for the Tax Foundation, an independent think tank.
