Zurich Airport

Your trip to Switzerland may well begin at Zurich Airport (Flughafen Zürich in German), a hub for international flights to and from the country, especially for Swiss International Airlines (SWISS) flights. Whether you're heading into Zurich, catching a flight to another destination within Switzerland or Europe, or transferring by train to other cities in Switzerland, you'll find Zurich Airport small, well-organized and easy to navigate.

Zurich Airport Code, Location, and Contact Information

  • Airport Code: ZRH
  • The airport is located in the suburb of Kloten, about 7 miles (11 kilometers) from central Zurich.
  • Website: www.zurich-airport.com
  • Phone Number: +41 43 816 22 11
  • Flight Tracker
  • Terminal Maps

Know Before You Go

Zurich Airport has three terminals. Terminals A and B/D are located within the same building and connected internally for foot traffic and via moving sidewalks. Terminal E is detached and reached via a tram. Check-in counters are one level up from street level, while the airport train station is located two levels below street level. From check-in, flyers go through security and into the Airside Center, where they'll find shops, restaurants, and services, as well as the tram to Terminal E. From the Airside Center, passengers can connect on foot or via moving sidewalk to the A or B/D departure gates.

Zurich Airport is busy, but efficient and well-laid out. Swiss (Swiss International Airlines, formerly SwissAir) has the most daily flights in and out of the airport, but dozens of airlines serve Zurich Airport, including major U.S. carriers Delta, American, and United, as well as British Airways, KLM, and EasyJet.

Zurich Airport Parking

Parking at Zurich Airport is readily available and close to the main terminal. Overnight parking in official lots and garages starts from 45 Swiss francs for 24 hours, or 34 Swiss francs if you pre-purchase parking online. There is a dedicated lot for electric cars, with charging costs included in the parking rate. Long-term parking lots are more distant from the airport and reached by shuttle bus—spaces in these lots must be reserved in advance.

For pick-up and drop-off, short-term parking is available outside the departures and arrivals areas. The first 10 minutes are free and after that, rates rise incrementally, from 3 Swiss francs for 15 minutes up to 10 Swiss francs for one hour.

Driving Directions

Zurich Airport is located northwest of the city. If you're driving from the city center, you'll take the A1 or A1L—both toll roads—out of the city, then pick up the A51 (also a toll road) that will take you right to the airport.

Rental car drop-off and pick-up is located in the P3 parking garage.

Public Transportation and Taxis

For most Zurichers and visitors, the quickest, least stressful way to get to the airport is by train. S-Bahn, InterCity (IC), and Inter-Regional (IR) trains run by the Zurich Transport Network (ZVV) , leave Zurich Hauptbahnhof (Zurich HB) station for the airport as frequently as every 3 minutes and no more than every 15 minutes. There are ticket machines as well as staffed ticket windows in the train station. These direct trains take from around 10 minutes, and tickets cost 3.40 Swiss francs. They arrive at the bottom floor of Zurich Airport.

If you're coming in on an arriving flight, once you clear customs and passport control, if applicable, you'll head down the escalators or elevators to the transportation center at Check-in 3 area. Train ticket counters there are staffed from 6:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. There are also ticket machines here, as well as in Arrivals halls 1 and 2.

If you want to purchase train tickets in advance, you can use the ZVV website or the ZVV mobile app .

Taxis wait outside the B/D Terminal entrance, on Level 0. A taxi from the airport into central Zurich costs from 40 to 60 Swiss francs, depending on the time of day, traffic, and the number of passengers.

Where to Eat and Drink

In areas open to the general public and the passenger-only regions, Zurich Airport has a wide range of choices for eating and drinking. Familiar fast-food brands like McDonald's, Burger King, Starbucks, and KFC are present here, as are Swiss-focused franchises like Helvetia Cafe, Zuri Kafi, and Edelweiss Cafe. There are several options for sit-down meals with table service, including a restaurant and a wine bar in the Radisson Blu Hotel, and Chalet Suisse for a hearty Swiss meal before take-off.

Where to Shop

Zurich is famous the world over for its high-end shopping, and its airport is no exception. Fashion heavy-hitters Gucci, Hermès, and Bottega Veneta are located in the Airside Center, as are luxury jewelry and watchmakers Bucherer, Bulgari, Rolex, and Tiffany. There are also more affordable outlets like H&M, Swatch, and Mango.

For last-minute gifts and souvenirs, look to Läderach or Sprüngli for chocolates or macarons. There are also several Duty Free outlets, as well as Swiss gifts from EdelWeiss Shop, The Spirit of Switzerland, and others.

How to Spend Your Layover

As airports go, Zurich's is not a bad place to be stuck on a layover. If you need to spend the night and don't want to stray too far from the airport, the Radisson Blu Hotel is the only full-service hotel right in the terminal. There's also a Transit hotel near the D gates, which rents rooms, beds and even recliners for periods of three to 12 hours. If you have an overnight or even several hours, you can consider taking the train or taxi into the city and doing a little sightseeing.

Airport Lounges

There are several lounges in the airport, including airline lounges (SWISS and Emirates) and open-access lounges where anyone can walk up, pay to enter and use the lounge facilities. Aspire and PrimeClass Lounges are among the better-known of these options.

There are two free family playrooms located on the A and D airsides.

Wifi and Charging Stations

WiFi is free for the first four hours, after which users will have to be a fee for continued access. Fees (after four hours) are 6.90 Swiss francs for one hour, 9.90 Swiss francs for four hours or 14.90 Swiss francs for 24 hours. There are free charging stations located throughout the airport.

Zurich Airport Tips & Facts

Here are a few fun facts about Zurich Airport:

  • Observation decks B and E (located on those airsides, respectively) offer great views of planes coming and going.
  • The airport website lists a number of Excursions at Zurich Airport , from biking and inline skating to behind-the-scenes tours, to places where you can watch planes take off and land.
  • If you want to stay in shape on the road, you can purchase a day-access pass to the fitness and wellness facilities at the Radisson Blu Hotel, and even take a shower after your workout.

Zurich airport: what to know before you go.

Flughafen Zürich is Switzerland's largest airport and home to a wide range of facilities.

Switzerland's largest airport is widely celebrated as one of the most pleasant and convenient European Airports. Located just 11 minutes from the city center, Zurich Airport (ZRH), also known as Flughafen Zürich, is home to a wide range of facilities and flag carrier SWISS International Air Lines.

How to get there

The airport is well connected to local and regional destinations with public transport. The airport features a dedicated bus terminal with connections across the canon and wider country. There is a dedicated train station that connects to Zurich's central station as well as the Number 10 tram, which runs every 7 to 15 minutes into town.

The airport can be reached conveniently by car and features over 14,000 spaces across six car parks for short and long-term parking. The terminal is also on a bike route linked to a regional highway.

Where to go

Zurich Airport opened in June 1948 and now hosts three runways and three terminals. Terminal A opened is used exclusively by flights within the Schengen Area. Terminal B contains gates prefixed B and D, with each gate having both designations depending on whether the flight is Schengen or intercontinental. The third terminal, E, is a satellite terminal situated between the runways and is connected to the airside center by a people mover called the Skymetro, which takes three minutes.

Want answers to more key questions in aviation? Check out the rest of our guides here .

Zurich Airport is a manageable size, with Terminals A and B/D both directly connected to the Airside Center. Walk times between gates are minimal, and SWISS's website promises that it should take a maximum of 30 minutes to get from the check-in desk to the gate.

There are two transfer desks located in Terminals A and E to assist with transiting passengers and deal with flight changes. The transit area also features a hotel with private rooms, recliners, lockers, and even shower facilities.

How to spend your time

The passenger area of the Airside Centre features over 60 shops, including 12 Duty-Free shops, restaurants, snack bars, and cafés. The options range from Jimmy Choo and Hermès to dry cleaners and pharmacies. The airport also hosts an observation deck for keen aviation enthusiasts, and many of the restaurants feature airside views.

Passengers looking for a bit of luxury can take advantage of ZRH Comfort, which includes access to a Priority Lane at the security checkpoint and the exclusive ZRH Club. In terms of lounges, there are both airline and third-party lounges. SWISS operates nine longes across the airport and even has a Business Bus that goes straight to the gate with no waiting times.

Check out all the latest European aviation news here.

The VIP Lounge, ZRH Club, marhaba Lounge, and Aspire Lounge are all located in the central airside area. A second Aspire lounge, along with the Emirates and Prime Class lounges, is located in Terminal E.

Opposite the airport is a development known as The Circle, which features several stores, restaurants, and bars. There is also the new University Hospital Airport, which offers a wide range of medical services, a Convention Center that can host up to 2,500 guests, and two Hyatt hotels.

For travelers in the winter season, the main square at the Circle is transformed into a Christmas village from November 23rd to December 24th. The Christmas stalls include vendors serving raclette, macaroni and cheese, mulled wine, other tasty snacks, and hot beverages.

Zurich Airport ( ZRH  IATA ) in Kloten (hence its alternative name, Kloten Airport) is the busiest airport in Switzerland , serving the Zurich region .

While the once proud Swissair of yesterear went belly up after disastrous acquisitions and speculations, the reborn carrier (now a subsidiary of Lufthansa Group) still maintains a hub in Zurich and thanks to the wealth and political neutrality of Switzerland, the relatively small Zurich is able to almost play in a league with London Heathrow, Paris Charles de Gaulle, Amsterdam Schiphol or Frankfurt, thus punching way above its weight and offering a lot of connections on several continents.

Understand [ edit ]

Construction of the airport started in 1945, on land in Kloten granted to the Canton of Zurich by the federal government.

The airport is about 13 km north of the city. It is a hub for Star Alliance member Swiss International Air Lines and its subsidiaries, including Edelweiss.

There are three terminals. The Airside Center houses check-in and security.

Flights [ edit ]

Map

Zurich's reputation as a world banking and financial centre makes it a significant airline destination, with flights connecting many major airports on most continents except Oceania, offered especially by the country's flag carrier, Swiss International Airlines . Its sister airline Edelweiss Air also serves mainly leisure destinations from Zurich. Besides the Lufthansa Group subsidiaries mentioned above, Zurich is also an important airport for chair and Easyjet .

Departures [ edit ]

Flights depart from one of these three sections.

There are three check-in facilities. Check-in 1 and 3 are used mostly by Lufthansa group airlines (Swiss, Lufthansa, Eurowings, Austrian, Brussels Airlines), Croatia Airlines, while all other airlines use check-in 2 (with the exception of Vueling & easyjet, which uses 3). Check-in 3 is located directly above the railway station while Check-ins 1 and 2 are right at level L1 directly above the arrival halls. Check-in 2 is divided into two floors with rows 1 to 4 on Level 2 and row 5 on Level 1.

Ground transportation [ edit ]

By public transport [ edit ].

zurich airport travel

For local transport, the airport belongs to Zone 121 of the ZVV network, which means you will be travelling on 2 zones on your way to the city. The fare is the same regardless of the used transportation mode.

By train [ edit ]

S2     S16     S24   serve the airport to Zurich main station via Oerlikon, mostly from platforms 3 and 4. S24 runs from the airport to Winterthur in the north and Zug in the south, while S2 can also take you to stops along the western shores of Lake Zurich until Unterterzen and S16 to the eastern shores until Herrliberg-Feldmeilen station.

Intercity and regional trains are also frequent with services going as far as Munich & Stuttgart in Germany and Bregenz in Austria. Most trains go directly to or pass Zurich main station, but some InterRegio trains stop at Oerlikon before reaching Zurich. In the other direction, many trains stop at Winterthur.

By tram [ edit ]

zurich airport travel

Tram lines 10 to Zurich main station and 12 to Stettbach train station stop at Level L0 just outside the Airport Centre. If heading to the airport, make sure to stop at the Bahnhof , as the next stop is Fracht or the cargo terminal still within the airport grounds.

By bus [ edit ]

A local bus station serving Zone 121 of the public transportation network is at the ground floor (Level L0) also outside the Airport Centre. Intercity buses like Flixbus also stop here.

By taxi [ edit ]

Taxis can be hailed from the inside curbs of Arrival Halls 1 and 2. A ride to the city center costs from CHF 50.

By car [ edit ]

The airport is accessible from Highway 51 which begins shortly before the airport from Highway 1 and terminates at Bullach. If coming from the city, watch out as exit 6 to the airport is on the left lane. Parking buildings P1 and P3 are adjacent to both terminals; a larger parking building P6 is four minutes away on foot from the terminal building and is equipped with charging outlets for electric cars.

Parking fares start from CHF 2 for 15 minutes and CHF 48 for long term parking for at least 24 hours.

Car rental kiosks can be found at level 1 of the Airport Shopping area, accessible from Check In 2.

By shuttle bus [ edit ]

Shuttle buses to hotels, faraway towns, and winter resorts can also be called for pick up from the airport at Arrival 2.

  • CHECK-IN all-ways , ☏ +41 848 007 100 . Drops at hotels around Zurich and faraway towns upon request. Cheaper per person fares if traveling with at least 2 passengers. Bus leaves the airport every 30 minutes. ( updated Jul 2021 )

Get around [ edit ]

zurich airport travel

Terminal E is connected to the Airside Centre by the SkyMetro , an underground automated train. It takes about 3 minutes. Look out the window - there are pictures on the corridor that resemble a movie due to the movement of the train. Pay attention however that once you take the train, you will be unable to return to the main terminal building. Passport control is done at the main terminal building.

Otherwise, walking is how you reach most of the terminals.

The landside area offers two extensive shopping complexes that resemble a shopping mall, the Airport Shopping area with direct access from the terminal building, and the Circle located on a separate area opposite the tram station. After security, most of the shopping options are centered around an area called the Airside Center, accessible for both Schengen and non-Schengen passengers before passport control.

Connect [ edit ]

Free Wi-Fi is available for 4 hours, with the usage amount being refreshed every 5 hours. Additional internet usage is available for a fee. Connect to the ZurichAirport network and get a verification code via text or phone call, or scanning a boarding pass at one of the scanners throughout the airport building or the information desk. Website of the Swiss Railways and electronic travel authorization by the US and Canada do not require access using verification code.

Cope [ edit ]

The airport now has a page on Sina Weibo and a WeChat account to handle queries - useful for Chinese residents and visitors.

Sleep [ edit ]

Sleeping inside the airport building is comfortable enough on a few chairs, especially airside and at Concourses B and E, that do not have armrests & generally the whole airport area is secure. The lighting and music however remain on even though no flights are arriving or departing overnight, so blindfolds and earplugs are helpful. Be aware that the terminal and passport controls close from 23:00 to 05:00, so if you wish to stay at the transit hotel, head there early.

  • 47.45113 8.56057 1 Transit Hotel at Zurich Airport , Transitbereich D , Level 1 ( next to Gates D ), ☏ +41 43 816 21 08 , [email protected] . While waiting outside the airport, you can head over to Flughafenpark behind The Circle building to escape the hustle and bustle, a small park atop a hill. To get to the top, there is a cable car that runs from the Circle.

The main destinations nearby are in the Zurich region , including, obviously, Zurich - but also places like Winterthur and Baden . The nearest busy towns are Oerlikon in the south where most train lines north of Zurich intersect, or the smaller Kloten by bus to the east.

These extra two hours allow the crew time to get to their hotel, rest for the required time, and return to the airport.

How long does a fuel stop for a private jet flight take?

The average fuel stop takes 45–60 minutes. To speed up fuel stops, the operator, or pilots may call ahead, so a fuel truck is waiting for the aircraft on arrival. For smaller jets, a fuel stop can take as little as 30 minutes.

Will my private jet charter use the same airport as a commercial airline?

No. When you charter a private jet, you generally fly into a private airport. However, you could access the same airports as a commercial airline if you request to do so or if there are no private airport options. However, using a large mainstream airport like Los Angeles International or London Heathrow is often a bad choice for private jets, as flying to a smaller regional private airport is much faster and often makes for a more luxurious experience.

Is the age of an aircraft a safety factor?

Aircraft age is not a safety factor. However, if the aircraft is older and hasn’t been refurbished properly, it may cause flyers some inconvenience, such as overheating, faulty air conditioning, or faulty plumbing in the lavatory.

How much luggage am I allowed to bring on a private jet?

As a rule of thumb, each seat on a light or midsize jet equates to one passenger and one item of luggage. Each item of luggage is considered to be the standard 23 kilograms, or about 50 lbs. Large jets are designed for long-range trips, which typically involve longer stays, so you can carry more than one item of luggage per person.

Are there aircraft that are wheelchair accessible?

There are many aircraft that are wheelchair accessible. Most of them are large jets or above and have a straight aisle. If the jet has a zigzag aisle – like the Falcon 900 – it will be difficult to maneuver the wheelchair onboard the aircraft. You’ll also need the right type of wheelchair; many motorized wheelchairs won’t fit and can’t be collapsed. If this is the case, you’ll need a smaller, temporary wheelchair. Some aircraft operators have smaller wheelchairs that can be used. Please speak with your Paramount private jet expert to review your aircraft options.

Can I fly with large sums of cash?

Yes, you can. This is a common occurrence for many private jet clients. You can fly with up to $5 million in cash as long as you declare that cash when coming through customs. For domestic trips, there’s no limit and no need to declare it.

Which private jets come with flight attendants?

In the United States, large jets and above are required to have flight attendants onboard; in Europe, flight attendants are used on midsize jets and above. Flight attendants require their own seats. Larger jets and above have a jump seat near the cockpit for the flight attendant to use, meaning the attendant generally stays out of the cabin.

Which airports offer ramp access, allowing the client to drive their car right up to their private jet?

Private jet clients can often have a limo drive them right up to the private jet, or even drive their own car to the plane. That said, different airports have different policies, and some may not offer ramp access. Please speak with your Paramount Aviation Advisor to review your options for a given trip.

Do private jets come with Wi-Fi?

Many private jets do have Wi-Fi, and it’s increasingly available free of charge on U.S. domestic flights. On international flights, prices range from $3.00-$8.50 USD per megabyte used. This means that opening up social media sites that are rich in images and videos could quickly cost you $20 – and downloading a feature-length movie could cost thousands!

When is on-demand private jet charter better than buying a block of hours?

Private jet charter can be a lot cheaper than buying a block of hours for a one-way flight, as you can access floating fleets or an empty leg to reduce the cost. With a block of hours, the price covers a round trip. If you only fly one-way, you are effectively paying double.

What is a carbon-neutral flight?

Every aircraft burns jet fuel and emits a certain amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere. This can be offset via one of several carbon offset programs that allow private jet clients to purchase a certain number of carbon credits to offset the emissions from their flights. A carbon-neutral flight is one that offsets the carbon emissions it uses via a formal process.

Can I have a flexible departure time for my private jet flight?

Yes, it is possible to have a flexible departure when flying privately. Operators typically offer a 30-minute to two-hour window, but you can request a longer window as long as it doesn’t interfere with the maximum crew duty day or their next scheduled flight. Please confirm with your Paramount Aviation Advisor at the time of booking your jet.

When should I hire a Boeing Business Jet?

Boeing Business Jets (BBJs) have unique amenities that extend far beyond sheer size and are often equipped with 1-2 bedrooms and 2-3 bathrooms (one more of those bathrooms may even offer stand-up showers.) These airliner-based executive aircraft also feature tall or ‘stand-up’ cabins that are also longer and wider than more typical corporate aircraft.

How soon can I have a private jet ready from the time I call in the request?

Generally speaking, with as little as 4 hours of notice. However, we have had wheels up in as little as 32 minutes from the time our client called us to book the flight and had them in the air. It depends on a few factors, such as how long it takes for the pilots to arrive at the airport (generally, there is a 2-hour call-out time for the pilots), and whether the aircraft is ready to go at the airport with no repositioning needed. Our Jet Card members enjoy faster booking since they have funds on account and can confirm a flight with a simple email.

Can I access my luggage while in flight?

On most private jets, you will be able to access your luggage during the flight. That’s because luggage and passengers are situated on the same level. This is in contrast to commercial airlines, where checked luggage is stored in a cargo hold. On large private jets, luggage is often stored in a compartment behind the lavatory, which means easy access to your bags.

When are private jet charter landing and takeoff slots applicable?

A landing or takeoff slot is simply a small window of time in which your aircraft is scheduled to fly in or out of the airport. You will need a landing and takeoff slot if you fly to a high-density airport in the United States or one that is hosting a special event with a significant number of aircraft arriving and departing. If you’re flying internationally, you will need a landing and takeoff slot for all major European cities. Please check with your Paramount Aviation Advisor at the time of booking for a specific route.

What kind of in-flight catering is available on a private jet?

Other than the standard snacks and drinks, you can order local cuisine options for your catering on board. In short, anything that doesn’t need to be cooked can be ordered; hot food must be precooked and then warmed on board.

Can I bring pets with me on private jet flights?

Of course! Just let us know in advance. The majority of the operators and aircraft owners allow pets onboard. In some cases, a small cleaning fee may apply. That said, there are specific requirements that must be met when traveling with your pet, including making sure that all documentation and vaccination records for your pet(s) are correct and up-to-date. Dogs and cats must also be at least eight weeks old and weaned when traveling within the U.S.

Skytrax names the best airports of 2024 — and Singapore's Changi is no longer No. 1

S ingapore's Changi Airport has lost its pole position as the world's best airport to Doha's Hamad International Airport, according to air transport rating firm Skytrax.

This is the third time Hamad International Airport clinched the top spot, after winning the title in 2021 and 2022.

Travelers of more than 100 nationalities participated in the Skytrax survey, which also named Hamad International Airport as the best airport in the world for shopping.

Changi Airport has been crowned the world's best airport 12 times by Skytrax, including winning first place consecutively from 2013 to 2020, and again in 2023.

In this year's survey, the city-state's airport won the titles of "Best Airport in Asia" and the "World's Best Airport Immigration Service."

South Korea's Incheon International Airport rose to third place — from No. 4 in 2023 — and was named the world's most family-friendly airport for the year.

Tokyo's Haneda Airport came in fourth and was also named the "World's Cleanest Airport." It processed 70 million passengers in 2023 — the most of any airport on Skytrax's list — according to the company.

Tokyo's other major international airport, Narita International Airport, ranked No. 5 on the list. It was recognized for its customer service, winning the title of "World's Best Airport Staff."

The rankings are based on questionnaires sent to airport customers between August 2023 and March 2024. Passengers evaluated key airport services, such as check-in and transfer experiences, immigration clearance, shopping and departures.

Qatar’s Hamad Airport now best in the world

Friday, 19 Apr 2024

PETALING JAYA: Qatar’s Hamad International Airport has wrested the title of “World’s Best Airport” from Singapore Changi Airport.

For the past few years, both have been the top two competitors for the number one position in the Skytrax World Airport Awards, Bloomberg reported.Changi has won the award for 12 years, including its consecutive wins from 2013 to 2020.

However, Hamad International Airport emerged as a strong contender in recent years and won its first award in 2021, with this year being its third win.

All the top five spots were taken up by Asian countries, with South Korea’s Incheon International Airport bagging third place.

Japan’s Haneda Airport and Narita International Airport took the fourth and fifth places on the list, respectively.

Incheon was also crowned this year’s “World’s Most Family-Friendly Airport”. Over in the West, Europe fared well with Paris Charles de Gaulle, Munich, Zurich and Istanbul airports all maintaining their seats in the top 10.

Another notable mention is the Hong Kong International Airport, which has greatly improved its position from 33rd to 11th place.

Airports in the United States have slipped out of the top 20 list altogether, with the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport losing its 18th spot in 2023 to Japan’s Kansai International Airport this year.

The Skytrax World Airport Awards rankings are determined based on customer satisfaction survey.

You can still find affordable flights to Europe this summer

Airfare prices to amsterdam, brussels, prague and reykjavik are way down from last year.

Christina Saull and her husband have waited five years to take a 10-day cruise through the Norwegian fjords. The first time they planned the trip, it was postponed for a medical emergency. The second time, there was a family wedding. Now, finally, they were getting ready to go in July.

Only they needed plane tickets.

“It’s interesting to see how expensive fares have been and how they’ve fluctuated,” said Saull, a public relations executive who lives in Alexandria, Va.

The couple watched prices go from as little as $900 round trip to as much as $2,500 for flights from Washington to Edinburgh, Scotland, and back from Copenhagen . They finally settled on premium economy seats for $2,000 each on Delta Air Lines and its partner Air France.

“I don’t think it’s unreasonable for summer Europe travel,” Saull said of what they paid.

Not unreasonable is a good way to describe transatlantic air travel this summer. Even with strong travel demand, tickets are cheaper on average than they were last year.

“Airfare to Europe is less expensive than last year by 10 percent,” said Hayley Berg, the lead economist at flight-booking app Hopper . The average round trip ticket before any extra fees costs $882, according to the data.

The highest fares are in June, July and August, Berg added. Traveling in shoulder months — for example, September and October — could save travelers as much as 30 percent.

Schedule data from aviation analytics firm Cirium Diio shows airlines will offer 8 percent more seats on U.S.-Europe routes from May through September than last year.

Philadelphia is gaining new nonstops to Copenhagen, Naples , and Nice, France, on American Airlines. Phoenix gets its first nonstop to Paris on Air France. Washington, a new flight to Zurich on Swiss International Air Lines. And many other routes additional flights or options on larger planes.

“In the transatlantic, we are looking forward to another strong summer,” said Glen Hauenstein, president of Delta Air Lines, referring to bookings earlier in April. He added the airline sees “healthy demand” for seats to Europe.

Paris has flight deals, but hotels are pricey

The Paris 2024 Summer Olympics are a bump in the finely tuned machine that is summer air travel to Europe. The Games run from July 26 through Aug. 11, and the French capital is expected to host some 15 million visitors during the event and the following Paralympic Games. Last summer, the city saw more than 6.2 million visitors in July and August.

“Paris will be like an Olympic village in July and August,” said Christine Ourmières-Widener, CEO of the French airline French Bee . All those visitors still need a way to get to the city. French Bee , which caters to leisure travelers like those going to the Games, has added flights from Los Angeles, New York and San Francisco to meet the demand.

Flight deals to Paris can still be found. Booking website Expedia recommends travelers buy tickets at least 21 days before their trip and, for international travel, look at departing on a Monday to find the best airfares.

Finding an affordable hotel in Paris during the Games is another matter. Expedia said it has seen a “massive surge” in searches for accommodations there this summer and recommends travelers look at nearby cities for more reasonably priced options.

Consider Nice, Prague and Reykjavik

Finn Vigeland, a transit planner who lives in Washington, was “quite surprised” last month when he found a good deal on flights to Nice, France, in July.

Prices on American Airlines’ new nonstop to Nice from Philadelphia were only $700 to $800 round trip, he said. That was affordable enough to make a trip to France with friends possible, and he booked the flight (with points, not cash).

Average fares to Nice from the United States are down a quarter to $907 compared to last summer, Hopper’s data shows. The city also has the distinction of being one of the few European destinations with lower airfares this summer than in 2019, 11 percent lower to be exact. That drop is, in part, thanks to a plethora of new flights on American, Delta, and United.

Amsterdam, Brussels, Prague , and Reykjavik , Iceland, are other European cities where ticket prices from the United States are down more than 20 percent from last year, according to Hopper.

Airfares are not down double-digits in all markets though. Fares to cities like Berlin and Glasgow, Scotland, are on par with last year.

Traveler after traveler said they felt like they could find reasonably priced plane tickets for trips between the United States and Europe this summer. Those who said they could not often lacked flexibility to adjust their trips to when and where fares are the cheapest.

“I felt like this was doable. It made sense,” Alexander Giess said of his plan to take his 10-year-old daughter on a three-week trip to France this summer.

After a lengthy search, in March the marketing executive paid about $1,000 each for two round-trip tickets to Nice from San Francisco on his preferred airline, Delta.
