Breaking News

Local news | 17-year-old dies in motorcycle crash in stamford, subscriber only, local news | trinity college in hartford given national recognition for its historic summit street campus.

A cannon salvaged from the Civil War flagship USS Hartford in the foreground with the Trinity College Chapel behind it. The historic Chapel along with the Long Walk have recently been named as part of the National Register of Historic Places. (Courant file photo)

“Being listed on the National Register of Historic Places is a profound acknowledgment of the enduring significance of our past and the importance of Trinity’s architecture to American history and society today,” said Trinity College President Joanne Berger-Sweeney in a press release. “This serves as another example of how we can celebrate our College’s identity and ensure that future generations of Bantams can connect with the richness of our proud history.”

The National Park Service designated an 11.4-acre rectangular area anchored by the iconic Long Walk and Chapel as the Trinity College Long Walk Historic District with national importance. The chapel’s tower, a well known sight for those entering Hartford on I-84, rises 163 feet in the air—about 100 feet higher than the roof ridge—and is visible from several areas around the city. The chapel was built in 1932 and designed by the same architect who designed the Washington National Cathedral.

The Long Walk encompasses a series of attached buildings laid out around three sides of the Main Quad and roughly forming the letter “c.” It is made up of adjacent buildings including Jarvis Hall, built in 1878; Northam Towers, 1883; and Seabury Hall, 1878, as well as later additions Williams Memorial Hall, 1914; Hamlin Hall, 1931; Cook Hall, 1931; Martin W. Clement Chemistry Laboratory, 1936; Goodwin-Woodward Hall, 1940; and Downes Hall, 1958.

Constructed out of brownstone with sandstone trim sourced from the Midwest, the Long Walk was the site of early presidential visits including Theodore Roosevelt and Dwight D. Eisenhower. Those visits are commemorated in stone and serve as inspiration for Trinity traditions, according to the school.

“Trinity’s Long Walk represents a precedent-setting design, not only for its collection of Gothic Revival-style craftsmanship, but also for its innovation in campus planning, through the original vision of a series of quadrangles and international collaboration,” said Jenny Schofield, Connecticut’s deputy state historic preservation officer in a press release. “Following its completion, high-quality Gothic Revival architecture also proliferated throughout Hartford.”

The register is the nation’s official list of cultural resources worthy of preservation because of their significance in American life and is part of a federal program that supports public and private efforts to protect historic and archaeological assets. The idea for Trinity to pursue the designation arose from a planning committee for the yearlong bicentennial celebration and was supported by a unanimous vote of agreement from the State Historic Preservation Review Board, the school said.

Trinity College was first opened in 1824 as Washington College by Bishop Thomas Brownell on a 14-acre site where the CT State Capitol is today. The college was renamed Trinity College in 1845; the original campus known as “College Hill” consisted of two Greek Revival buildings, according to the school’s history. The school relocated in 1878 for the construction of the Capitol building to its current Summit Street home.

Trinity College Chapel Sculpture

Trinity College Chapel Sculpture - VERITAS

Inside the Trinity College Chapel are six-eight pews and kneel ends that consist of imagery from the life of the college, incidents from American history, and lives of people and families who have in some way been touched by Trinity. [1] As a whole, the collection represents the collective memory of the College from about 1880 to 1960. [2] The collection has many pieces, which were created over a long period of time with a variety of subject matter. J Gregory Wiggins of Pomfret, Connecticut was the direct carver of sixty-six of the sixty-eight pews and kneeler ends. This meant that he himself designed and executed the woodcarvings that persistently showcased his personality. He provided a fresh approach to the material rather than working form another meaning he designed and executed all of his work. [3] In a letter to Ogilby Wiggins expressed his desire to create humorous pieces for the “unique atmosphere” that is the Chapel. He went on to say that the act of smiling in a church should not be considered a “crime,” and that one should “embrace laughter and solemnity at the same time.” [4] His ideas were constantly discussed with Ogilby who brought out Wiggins’ greatest creative ability.

The other carvings were designed were the work of Professor John C.E. Taylor. Taylor had been the chair of the fine arts department at Trinity College for years. The designs were then carved by Erwin Dressel from the firm C.H. Dresser and Son, Inc. [5] Wiggins and Professor Taylor’s work differed in the attitude of the designs. Wiggins’ style was archaic and reflected his own character isolated from modern artistic movements, while Taylor worked in modern idiom and adapted to the needs of the chapel. [6] The work of just two artists provides a unity in the collection of pews and kneeler ends that brings the many objects and subject matter together so that they can be appreciated as a whole group. [7]

John Gregory Wiggins studied the Pomfret School in Connecticut and then at Harvard University. He went on to teach at St. Paul’s School in Concord, New Hampshire at the suggestion of a close family friend who worked at the school, Samuel Smith Dury. He was a faculty member at St. Pau’s from 1912 to 1916. There he taught Latin, Greek, and German, and coached crew. [8] In 1917 he joined the American field service in France and later became second lieutenant in the Army. Wiggins would also go on to serve in France during World War I. [9] Wiggins was not interested in competing in the competitive art world and instead he mainly produced work for churches and schools. [10] Wiggins spent many years producing pieces for the Trinity College Chapel. The first pew by Wiggins was dedicated in 1932 and he continued to create pieces until his death in 1956. [11] His style was already established before designing work for the chapel, however it was a result of his friendship with Ogilby that gave him the liberty to create freely, which allowed his creativity to grow even further. The many pieces, most of which were designed and carved by Wiggins, contain a vast display of the artist’s talents.
