If you’re going on a Caribbean , Bermuda or Bahamas cruise, plan on packing light sundresses, shorts and tops, bathing suits and cover ups. Add a couple formal night outfits and some dress shoes , and you’re all set.

Remember that you can pack lighter by wearing outfits more than once on a cruise . A good tip is to pair a daytime outfit with dressier shoes and some jewelry, and wear it in the evening for a whole new look.

Cruise Outfits for Women

Having trouble figuring out what exactly to wear on a cruise? You’ve come to the right place. In this post, I’ll share cruise outfits for women that I’ve worn on my past cruises as a Millennial cruiser, and give you inspiration on your cruise wardrobe.

In the past few years, I’ve been on 8+ cruises, and each time I’ve perfected all the outfits you’d need to pack for your cruise.

Cruise Outfits

I’ve been on all kinds of itineraries from shorter Caribbean cruises to long Mediterranean cruises, and from my experience, the cruise outfits generally stay the same.

You’ll need to consider what you’ll wear on the ship during the day, what you’ll wear on port days, and evening attire- which I’ll cover in this post.

So whether this is your first cruise or if you are a seasoned cruiser, I hope you find some new inspiration for your upcoming cruise with these new cruise outfits.

Read More: – For a more comprehensive list of what to pack for a cruise, read my ultimate cruise packing list that covers everything you’d need to bring (plus things you wouldn’t even think about but make a HUGE difference)

Daytime Cruise Outfits

Embarkation day cruise outfits.

Cruise Outfits

The first day of your cruise is exciting! You’re getting accustomed to your new home at sea with lots of exploring and finding a delicious cocktail.

Now before the fun of exploring, keep in mind you’ll be doing a lot of waiting around to get on the ship, plus going through security, and perhaps waiting for your room to be ready.

For embarkation day I would plan on wearing a casual outfit with lighter materials with layers- or even your airplane outfit . Something lightweight, yet appropriate to wear wandering around the ship.

I wouldn’t worry too much about what to wear on Embarkation day, but having a swimsuit ready to go is a great idea.

Pro Tip: Wear a swimsuit underneath your clothing with a stylish coverup and take advantage of the resort deck pool while everyone gets settled or hits up the buffet. It will feel like you’ve added an extra day on to your cruise!

What to wear on a Cruise Sea Day

Cruise Outfits

Stick to casual clothing during the day on a cruise. A typical sea day on a cruise begins with breakfast, you can wear casual items like t-shirts, jean shorts, etc.

I like to wear cute sets, or shorts and a cute top that’s easy to throw on when heading to the breakfast buffet. This is the least formal part of your cruise, but I would avoid walking around in your pajamas .

what to wear on a cruise

After that, you’ll probably walk around the ship or head to the resort deck which you’ll need to bring a bathing suit and beach coverup .

I always like to bring a larger tote bag so I can stick in all my essentials that I would need for a full pool day like sunscreen, a book, a water bottle, and extra clothes if I decide to swim.

Just think about wearing classic resort casual wear for the daytime.

Not sure what resort casual wear is? I have a full post that explains it. Read What is resort casual wear & how to wear it .

Now in the early evening after lounging on the resort deck, I like to wear a nice sundress or something a little dressy to have a sunset cocktail in. Thankfully for us ladies, I can usually wear the same dress to dinner without a problem.

What to Wear on a Caribbean Cruise Excursion

Cruise Outifs

I find a lot of Caribbean shore excursions involve lots of water activities like swimming & snorkeling, or boat excursions.

For a Caribbean cruise excursion, I would wear a swimsuit plus a coverup , and additional dry clothes if you want to change into something more comfortable after your day in the water, especially for warm destinations.

If you are not headed on a water excursion, wear casual clothing like sundresses , shirts, and shorts in light breathable materials like linen, cotton, or jersey.

Plus a comfortable pair of shoes you can easily walk around in for different terrain.

I took a cooking class in St. Kitts on a cruise excursion. I wore a casual top and shorts and everyone else wore something similar. Keep in mind that Caribbean islands are hot and humid.

What to Wear on a Mediterranean Cruise Excursion

Here are some Cruise outfit ideas I wore on my Mediterranean cruise excursions in Italy, Greece, Croatia, and Montenegro.

Cruise Outfits Excursion

If you are going on a Mediterranean cruise, your ports of call and excursions tend to be a bit different than a Caribbean Cruise.

Instead of mostly swim & snorkel excursions you’d find on a Caribbean cruise, Mediterranean cruises have more city sightseeing excursions that involve a lot of walking , touring, and being in a city center.

For example, if you stop in Naples Itay, you could explore the Amalfi Coast, Capri, Naples, and even Pompei which all involve different kinds of daytime outfits.

I like to wear lightweight breathable dresses and comfortable walking shoes with a larger day bag to keep all my essentials inside.

birkenstock arizona big buckle sandal

Surprisingly my Birkenstock Arizona sandals were my go-to shoe on all my excursions. I even climbed a mountain in Kotor Montenegro in them and they were still comfortable afterward.

Evening Cruise Outfits

evening cruise outfits

To be honest, I think that the ladies have an easier time with evening cruise outfits because mostly anything goes as long as it’s dressy. Darker-colored sundresses , cocktail dresses , or even pants with a dressy top will work.

Men on the other hand have more rules like long pants and collared shirts.

Like I previously mentioned, after lounging at the pool deck, I like to get dressed up in a nice sundress to have a sunset cocktail before dinner. I usually head straight to dinner in the same dress and never had any problems.

Casual Dinner Outfits

I find that a lot more cruises are ditching formal dinners and instead have an “evening chic” dress code which can mean dressing elegant and sophisticated in your way.

Here are some examples of “casual” dinner cruise outfits. Keep in mind that I like to dress up no matter what the dress code is.

Cruise Outfits Evening

Here is a great example of a casual dinner outfit that doesn’t involve a dress. A pair of nice dark pants and a dressy top and flats will do the job for casual nights.

Formal Dinner Outfits

Here are some examples of formal dinner cruise outfits for the main dining room I’ve worn on recent cruises:

formal cruise outfits

Some cruise lines have “ formal ” nights, but even in recent years the strictness of the dress code has become more lax . Formal dress codes for ladies include cocktail dresses, elegant skirts, and evening-wear blouses.

But if you still want to wear a formal evening gown, it’s welcome. It’s a great excuse to dress up a little.

Double-check which cruise line you are cruising with to see the exact evening dress code.

What to wear on a cruise

No matter if you are going on a Caribbean Cruise or a Mediterranean cruise, here are things you should pack for your next cruise.

Pack sundresses to wear during the day, early evening, and perhaps dinner. These can be flowy maxi dresses or shorter styles. My favorite Amazon Maxi dress looks more expensive than it is and works great on a cruise.

Bonus tip: find dresses in non-wrinkle materials such as jersey material so you won’t have to worry about trying to get the wrinkles out.

Swimwear & Cover-ups:

what to wear on a cruise

You will be living in a swimsuit & coverup on your cruise, so be sure you bring your favorites. I love this one piece from Amazon . It’s flattering on any body type, comes in multiple colors, and looks expensive.

This beach coverup from Amazon is also one of my favorites. It’s in a nice cotton gauze-like material and looks so sophisticated.

Lightweight Jacket / Scarf

No matter when or where your cruise is, a lightweight jacket is a good idea for added warmth on cooler nights or heavy inside air conditioning. This could be a denim jacket, a lightweight sweater, or shall.

I’d recommend going for an extra-large scarf or sweater that still can be worn over your shoulders during the evening. It’s not too casual and looks dressy, while still keeping you warm.

Dark Pants / Jeans:

Be sure to bring a dark pair of pants or jeans if you don’t want to wear dresses to dinner. Dark pant goes with any dressy top, and it’s a basic you can wear more than once on your cruise.

Evening Dress

A nice evening dress is essential for any cruise. I find that a little black dress is a perfect item to bring because it’s dressy and easy to pack.

Some of my favorite evening dresses from Amazon .

cruise fashion style

A pair of sandals that you can easily slip on and off are a must. Ideally, bring a pair that you don’t mind getting wet – especially if you plan on going to the resort pool deck or any water excursion.

You can bring heels, but keep in mind that you’ll be doing plenty of walking on cruise ships, and most of the time they are carpeted. If your heels are uncomfortable on land, they will be uncomfortable at sea.

A great compromise is a shorter kitten heel, a wedge, or a dressy flat.

A pair of white sneakers go with everything and are comfortable to put on after wearing sandals for so many days. These are great to have for strenuous activities, adventurous excursions, and exploring ports of call.

Read next :  23 Best White Sneakers For Women You Can Wear All Day

Sun Hat & Pair of Sunglasses

Don’t forget your accessories like a sun hat and a pair of sunglasses. To avoid your hat getting blown away by the wind, find one with a chin strap.

canvas tote bag

You’d be surprised at how many things you need to bring with you when you leave your cruise cabin.

I love bringing a stylish tote bag to throw all my essentials for the day inside like sunscreen, book, phone or tablet, an extra change of clothes, towel, etc.

I recommend this stylish tote from Amazon that I wore on my recent cruise. Or I love a sturdy canvas tote that goes with any outfit.

Mens Cruise Outfits

I can’t leave the men hanging, so here are some men’s cruise outfit ideas:

Men’s Day Outfits

During the day, men can wear casual clothing like swim trunks and a neutral shirt that is acceptable for the breakfast buffet and the resort deck.

Men’s Evening Cruise Outfits

Cruise Outfits Men

Now unfortunately for the men, the evening cruise line dress code applies mostly to men.

Cruises suggest men wear in general long pants or nice jeans, a collared dress shirt, and dress shoes.

For Formal Nights : Men should wear dress slacks, a collared shirt, and a sports coat. A tux or suit is optional, but double-check the specifics from your cruise line.

Cruise Outfits FAQ:

How many outfits to pack per day on a cruise.

I would pack two outfits per day on a cruise- something to wear during the day either on board or at a port of call, and something a bit dressier for the evening. Now you can wear a swimsuit & coverup more than once on your vacation, so keep that in mind when you’re packing.

Do you dress up for dinner on a cruise?

Generally yes, you do dress up for dinner on a cruise. However, a lot of cruises are dropping the mandatory “formal” night where you had to dress to the nines in black tie attire. Instead, you’ll find smart casual, or evening chic dress codes in place for dinner.

Cruise OUtfits for Ladies

What are the best clothes to wear on a cruise?

You’ll want to wear something comfortable and casual during the day. Don’t forget your swimsuit for excursions or lounging at the resort deck. And add something a bit dressy for the evening.

What NOT to wear on a cruise?

Now there are a few things not to wear on a cruise that pertain mostly to the evening. Flip flops, swimsuits tank tops, and shorts are generally not allowed inside restaurants during dinner.

Another thing to keep in mind is your footwear. Cruise ships are huge and you’ll be doing a surprising amount of walking (especially if your cabin is on the opposite of the buffet) Don’t wear shoes you can’t walk in like super high heels , etc.

Let’s Sum it up on Cruise Outfits

I hope you found this post helpful for packing for your next cruise vacation. To sum it up here are things you need to think about when packing for cruise outfits.

  • During the day you’ll want to bring something to wear around the cruise ship. Think comfortable and casual.
  • Bring a swimsuit + coverup for days on the resort deck.
  • I always recommend bringing something easy to throw on for quick runs to the buffet, especially in the morning for coffee!

Pro tip: bring a reusable insulated water bottle to fill up with coffee, water (or cocktails) to keep warm or cold throughout your cruise.

  • During the evening pack something a bit dressier. For ladies that can be dark pants and a dressy top or a nice dress. Men should bring long pants and a collared shirt for dinner time.

Cruise Fashion Unpacked: The Ultimate Guide for What to Wear on Your Next Sailing

From swimsuits to sweaters, dresses to denim, here’s how to pack fun, comfortable, and practical pieces from brands that promote ethical and sustainable fashion..

When it comes to cruise fashion, keep it fun and functional with these key pieces.

One of the best things about cruising is only having to unpack your bag once during a vacation that lets you visit multiple destinations over the course of a few days, a week, or even longer.

That said, figuring out everything you need to pack for a cruise itinerary that might include themed nights, beachy days, city jaunts, and shore excursions everywhere from vineyards to jungles can be daunting.

We don’t need to tell you to wear your straw hat (Vitamin A’s Cannes Straw Bucket Hat , perhaps?) or fedora on the plane to preserve its shape. But it helps to know a few key pieces to pack for your next cruise to make sure your wardrobe goes the distance while you’re sailing the high seas—from poolside lounging and beach time by day to shows and specialty dining come night.

The best cruise dresses

The ultimate cruise vibe can be defined by fun, flowy designs and outfits that can easily transition from the pool or beach to lunch and the cocktail lounge later.

Among the dresses to consider is Reformation’s cult midi-length Rou Knit Dress , which does triple duty—it can be tossed over a bikini or one-piece aprés-swim, belted with sandals for traipsing around a port town, or paired with heels and sparkly earrings for a dressed-up dinner look back on the ship.

Woman wearing a pink and orange floral print maxi dress

Bring a pop of color to your cruise outings in this Toad & Co Crusher Maxi Dress.

Leylo’s Color Block Cut Out Maxi Dress comes in sun-kissed colors you can opt to tone down with flip-flops and a jean jacket (try Good American’s Fitted Light Compression Denim Jacket for a flattering look), or glam it up with strappy sandals for a slightly more formal night. The Crusher Maxi Dress from Toad & Co is nearly impossible to get wrinkly in addition to being breezy and quick-drying for poolside or town (ditto for the Crusher Sleeveless Romper if you want less material to contend with).

The best cruise pants, shorts, tops, sweaters, and outerwear

Made from 100 percent linen, Athleta’s Retreat Wide Leg Linen Pant for women goes as well with a simple tank top as a gauzy button-up shirt, like this one from Encircled made from organic cotton.

For men, Marine Layer’s Saturday Stretch Beach Pant offers a more structured onboard look with a similar drawstring waist. Check out the brand’s Garment Dye Crew Sweaters , too, for a look to dress up or down.

You’ll never go wrong with a nautical-inspired sweater in port or at sea. Long Wharf Supply Co . crafts the gorgeous ones in its SeaWell collection using recycled materials such as water bottles and oyster shells blended with cotton and natural lambswool. The Sconset and Edgarton SeaWell Quarter Zip look particularly apropos with a backdrop of flowing seas.

Are you even on a cruise if you’re not wearing nautical stripes? Do so in style with Long Wharf Supply ethically made sweaters.

It’s definitely a good idea to pack a rain jacket or shell for inclement weather while cruising or on shore. Made from recycled polyester, Fjällräven’s Bergtagen Lite Eco Shell Jacket , in men’s and women’s versions, packs down super light and is a worthy outerwear investment you’ll use for many years and in different destinations.

For basic T-shirts, it might sound counter-intuitive, but high0quality merino wool is moisture-wicking and packs down light in addition to being odor resistant. Ibex’s Paradox Tee , available in men’s and women’s versions, is a good choice in several color options and pairs easily with flowy bottoms like Tentree’s lightweight Linen Offshore Shorts or the Certified B Corp brand’s stretch joggers for men, made from recycled water bottles.

A pair of tan woven huarache shoes

Nisolo’s woven huarache sandals come in numerous neutral shades that make them easy to mix and match with cruise outfits.

Best shoes for cruises

For footwear on a cruise, keep it simple and lightweight with a pair of leather flip-flops or loafers from OluKai , dressier sandals like Nisolo’s adorable huaraches made from handwoven leather, or a pair of strappy Les Tropeziennes sandals that conjure French Riviera summers.

Water shoes that can double as sneakers for exploring are a great choice to have along, too, like Aqua X Sport from Zero Shoes, which don’t use foam in the midsole for a lower environmental impact and dry out in a hurry.

Summersalt's Sidestroke one-piece swimsuit and single strap suit with diagonal stripes in pink, red, and white

Opt for a swimsuit with just the right amount of flare, aka Summersalt’s Sidestroke.

Best swimwear for cruises

Sustainable swimwear brands to have on your radar include Summersalt (the Today Show recently dubbed the brand’s Sidestroke swimsuit, with compression properties, the “unicorn of swimsuits”). Australian brand Bondi Born has elegant separates you can mix and match that run the coverage range. And for men, Fair Harbor makes trunks that can scream “I’m on a boat!” (check out the Ozone ) while also giving yacht club vibes (see the nautical stripe Anchor ).

The best luggage, handbags, and accessories for cruises

A cruise can feel a lot like a floating resort, with onboard amenities that might include multiple swimming pools, water parks, spas, and fine dining restaurants, depending on the cruise line you choose. Approach packing for a cruise in a similar way you do a resort vacation on land, minimizing components while maximizing options.

Keep in mind that cruise ship cabins tend to be far less roomy than hotel rooms. A small carry-on bag that fits easily under your bed or in your cabin’s cozy closest, like Australian brand July’s Carry On Light (dubbed the world’s lightest double-wheeled suitcase, at just 3.9 pounds), is a perfect packing companion for a short cruise to a warm destination, with mesh partitions that provide compression and let you pack more into a tidy package.

For longer trips with more variable weather where you want more options, consider Paravel’s Aviator Set Plus , made from recycled materials and vegan leather and in carry-on and checked sizes. (The set is a great option for family travel—use the carry-on for smaller items you can’t live without from the get-go, like bathing suits for heading straight to the pool, and let the cruise line deliver the larger bag to your room after check-in.)

A day bag is clutch on a cruise, too, whether you’re toting books and baby snacks for a few hours poolside or hopping ship for a shore excursion for the day. There’s plenty of room to bring souvenirs back inside the gorgeous and durable canvas Tote-Ally bags by women-founded Florida brand Bagging Rights. The larger interior easily fits rolled up towels and a change of clothes and there are lots of pockets to stash things like reef-safe sunscreen ( Surf Durt makes a great zinc option in a reusable bamboo container), polarized sunglasses (you can’t go wrong with Costa Del Mar’s Waterwomans ), lip balm, and more shore-side musts.

clothes for cruise

Daytime Cruise Clothes

Navigating the vast array of day activities on a cruise can be both exhilarating and, admittedly, a bit overwhelming.

Whether you’re lounging on the sundeck, trying out the various onboard activities, or stepping ashore to explore a new city, your daywear should embody three core principles: comfort, style, and versatility.

Here’s how to make sure you’re perfectly attired from sunrise to sunset with cruise clothes.

Blouse cruise clothes

Casual Attire for Exploring Onboard or Port Cities

Breathable T-shirts or Blouses: A staple for any cruise wardrobe, these offer effortless style combined with utmost comfort. Opt for lighter colors or patterns that can easily be paired with shorts, skirts, or even jeans.

Comfortable Shorts or Skirts: Given the tropical or temperate climates you’re likely to encounter, shorts or skirts are indispensable. Look for breathable fabrics like cotton or linen. Consider packing a mix of lengths and styles to suit different occasions.

Light Dresses: A one-piece wonder, dresses are easy to throw on for a quick breakfast or a stroll in the port city. Sundresses or A-line dresses can be both chic and comfortable.

Stylish yet Comfortable Sandals or Walking Shoes: While flip-flops are great for the deck, a comfortable pair of sandals or closed-toed walking shoes are essential for those city tours or onboard activities.

casual cruise clothes

Polo Shirts or Casual T-shirts: A classic polo offers a neat look while t-shirts (plain or graphic) provide a laid-back vibe. Ensure they’re made of breathable materials to keep you cool.

Khaki Shorts or Lightweight Trousers: While shorts are ideal for hotter days, a pair of lightweight trousers can be a stylish choice for evening onboard activities.

Comfortable Sneakers or Sandals: Sneakers are versatile, perfect for both onboard activities and shore excursions. A comfortable pair of sandals can also be a good alternative for more relaxed days.

One-piece Swimsuits

Swimwear and Poolside Cruise Clothes

Let’s face it; a significant portion of your cruise will probably be spent by the pool. And why not? The glistening waters, the sun decks with their loungers, and, of course, the inviting pool bars! Here’s what to wear to make a splash.

One-piece Swimsuits or Bikinis: Depending on your style and comfort level, both are great choices. Consider bringing a couple of options to rotate during your trip.

Cover-ups or Kaftans: For those moments when you’re moving from the pool to the buffet or bar, a stylish cover-up or kaftan is essential. They offer a modest yet chic way to navigate the ship.

Slip-on Sandals or Flip-flops: Easy to wear and remove, these are poolside essentials.

Swim Trunks

Swim Trunks or Board Shorts: Available in various lengths and patterns, find one that suits your style and comfort.

Tank Tops or Tees for Cover: A quick throw-over for when you’re heading to the snack bar or just lounging on the deck.

Flip-flops or Slide Sandals: The ultimate in poolside footwear, these are easy to slip on and off.

Adventure Wear

Active and Adventure Wear (for excursions)

Cruise trips aren’t solely about sipping cocktails  having fun cruise experiences on the deck or basking in the sun. They’re often punctuated with heart-pounding adventures and excursions that whisk you away into the heart of new destinations.

Whether it’s hiking up a picturesque mountain, snorkeling in crystal-clear waters, or navigating through a bustling local market, you’ll need cruise clothes that matches the pace and spirit of these adventures.

athletic clothes for cruises

Quick-drying Tops: Materials like polyester or blends that wick away moisture are ideal. Whether you’re sweating from a hike or got a bit wet during a water-based activity, these tops will keep you dry and comfortable.

Athletic Shorts or Leggings: Depending on the nature of the activity and the expected weather, choose between shorts or full-length leggings. They should allow for maximum mobility without any discomfort.

Sturdy Walking Shoes or Hiking Boots: Depending on the terrain, a good pair of walking shoes with a grip or hiking boots might be necessary. Ensure they’re already broken in to avoid blisters.

walking from shore excursion

Moisture-wicking Shirts: Like the women’s tops, shirts for men should be able to handle sweat and perhaps a splash or two. They should be lightweight and comfortable.

Athletic Shorts or Trekking Pants: Shorts are great for warmer climates, but sometimes, long trekking pants can offer protection against plants, bugs, or the sun.

Sporty Shoes or Hiking Boots: Comfort is paramount. Like with women’s shoes, ensure they are broken in and suited for the type of excursion you’ll be undertaking.

When choosing active and adventure wear, always consider the specific nature of the excursions you’re planning. Some might require more specialized gear, while others might be a casual stroll through a town or beach.

Always remember, it’s not just about looking good, but also about ensuring safety and comfort during these activities.

Evening Attire

Evening Cruise Clothes

As the golden hues of the day give way to the twinkling stars of the night, the atmosphere on a cruise ship takes on a more refined and sophisticated vibe. Evenings onboard are a delightful blend of dining, dancing, shows, and making memories.

Whether it’s the soft melodies of a piano bar, the glamour of a captain’s dinner, or the excitement of a Broadway-style show, packing cruise clothes for dressing the part can make your evening even more special. Let’s help you shine under the cruise ship chandeliers!

Sundresses

Casual Dining

Many cruises offer a relaxed dining experience for those nights when you just want to kick back. While the ambiance is laid-back, it’s a tad more upscale than your daytime cruise clothes.

Sundresses or Maxi Dresses: Flowy and comfortable, these dresses are perfect for a relaxed dinner. They’re stylish without being overly formal.

Comfortable Sandals or Ballet Flats: After a long day of excursions, your feet deserve some comfort. Opt for embellished sandals or chic ballet flats that match your dress.

Button-up Shirt

Button-up Shirts: Whether it’s a classic white or a playful print, a button-up shirt is a versatile choice for casual dining.

Slacks or Chinos: A step up from shorts, these trousers strike the right balance between casual and classy.

Loafers or Dress Sandals: Keep it comfortable, but avoid athletic shoes. A nice pair of loafers or even dressy sandals would be apt.

Formal Nights

Certain nights on the cruise, often dubbed as “Captain’s Nights” or “Gala Nights”, require a touch of elegance. It’s an opportunity to pull out all the stops and dress to the nines (and maybe snap some great cruise photos !).

Cocktail Dress

Cocktail Dresses or Elegant Gowns: Depending on the level of formality of the cruise line, a cocktail dress or a full-length gown would be suitable. Think of sequins, satin, and all things glam!

Heels or Sophisticated Flats: While heels elevate the look, if you’re not comfortable in them, opt for jeweled or polished flats.

Evening Clutches: Ditch the daytime tote and carry a sleek clutch to hold your essentials and match your evening cruise clothes.

Tuxedo

Suits or Tuxedos: While a well-fitted suit is a universal choice, some ultra-luxury cruises might require a tuxedo for their most formal nights.

Dress Shoes: Polished and pristine, pair them with your suit or tuxedo for that complete look.

Bowtie or Tie: Depending on the dress code and personal preference, finalize your look with either a classic tie or a dapper bowtie.

Dressing up in the evening isn’t just about adhering to the cruise’s dress code; it’s an experience in itself. It’s the thrill of preparing for a night of enchantment, the anticipation of gourmet meals, and the promise of unforgettable memories.

Common Cruise Packing Mistakes (and How to Avoid Them)

Setting sail on a cruise is exciting, but ensuring you have everything you need can be a daunting task.

Overpacking cruise clothes, forgetting cruise essentials , or neglecting the dress code can throw a wrench in your vacation plans. Here’s a list of some frequent missteps made by travelers and tips to sidestep them.

Overpacking

The Mistake: Bringing half your wardrobe “just in case.” This not only makes it difficult to find what you need but can also lead to excess baggage fees.

How to Avoid It:

  • List Before Packing: Make a detailed list before you start packing and stick to it.
  • Capsule Wardrobe: Focus on mix and match items, so fewer pieces can create more outfits.

Neglecting Cruise Line Dress Codes

The Mistake: Assuming all cruises have the same dress standards and finding yourself either overdressed or underdressed.

  • Check Cruise Line’s Guidelines: Every cruise line is different; always refer to your specific line’s dress code.
  • Pack Versatile Items: Pieces that can be dressed up or down based on the occasion.

Forgetting Essential Documents

The Mistake: Realizing at the last minute that you’ve forgotten your passport, booking confirmation, or travel insurance.

  • Document Checklist: Make a list of all essential documents and check them off as you pack.
  • Digital Backups: Store scanned copies of crucial documents in your email or a cloud storage.

Neglecting Port Stops

The Mistake: Focusing only on onboard attire and forgetting about what you might need for shore excursions, especially in culturally conservative areas.

  • Research Port Stops: Familiarize yourself with the local culture and expected cruise clothes for your cruise ports .
  • Pack Accordingly: Bring suitable clothing for the destinations you’ll visit, such as conservative attire for religious sites.

Overlooking Footwear

The Mistake: Packing only one pair of shoes or not considering the various activities you’ll be partaking in.

  • Diverse Footwear: Include a good mix – comfortable walking shoes for excursions, formal shoes for evenings, and flip-flops for poolside lounging.
  • Wear Bulky Shoes: If space is a concern, wear your bulkiest pair during travel to save luggage space.

cruise clothes packing tips

Overdoing Toiletries

The Mistake: Lugging around full-sized shampoo bottles and lotions which consume space and add weight.

  • Travel-sized Items: Opt for miniature versions of your favorite products.
  • Check What’s Provided: Many all-inclusive cruises offer basic toiletries, so you might not need to pack them.

Ignoring the Weather

The Mistake: Assuming it will be sunny when packing cruise clothes because you’re heading to a tropical destination, only to be met with unexpected rain or cold fronts.

  • Weather Check: Look up the expected weather for your cruise dates and destinations.
  • Pack for All Scenarios: Include a lightweight rain jacket and a sweater, even if you expect warm weather.

Not Planning for Connectivity

The Mistake: Assuming you’ll have the same connectivity at sea as on land and not preparing for potential communication blackouts.

  • Download Offline Maps: Useful for port stops.
  • Portable Chargers: Keep your devices charged during long excursions.

Packing your cruise clothes and more doesn’t have to be overwhelming. By being aware of these common pitfalls and planning accordingly, you can ensure a hassle-free and enjoyable cruising experience. After all, the focus should be on the horizon ahead, not what’s missing in your suitcase!

FAQs on Cruise Clothes

Navigating through the world of cruise fashion can stir up a tide of questions. Whether you’re a first-time cruiser or a seasoned sailor, there are always inquiries that pop up… and we got the top cruise tips and tricks for you!

Here’s a roundup of some frequently asked questions about cruise clothing to make sure you’re ship-shape for your voyage!

Q1: Do I need to pack formal attire for every cruise?

A: Not necessarily. While many cruises have formal nights, the number and dress code vary by cruise line. Always check with your specific cruise’s guidelines. However, it’s wise to pack at least one semi-formal outfit, just in case.

Q2: Are swimsuits acceptable everywhere onboard?

A: Generally, swimsuits are only appropriate around pool areas. If you’re walking through indoor sections or dining areas, it’s respectful (and often required) to wear a cover-up, shorts, or a dress over your swim attire.

Q3: How versatile should my shore excursion cruise clothes be?

A: It’s best to plan for a variety of activities. You might be exploring a historic city in the morning and hitting the beach in the afternoon. Quick-drying, breathable clothes that can be layered are ideal.

Q4: Do cruises provide laundry facilities?

A: Most cruise ships offer laundry services for an additional fee. Some even have self-service laundromats. It’s useful to check in advance if you plan to pack light and do laundry onboard.

Q5: Can I wear heels on the cruise?

A: Yes, but be cautious. The ship can sway, making it challenging to walk in high heels. For formal nights, consider wedges or block heels for women as they provide better stability.

Q6: Is there a limit to how much luggage I can bring?

A: While cruise ships tend to be more lenient than airlines, there might be restrictions based on cabin size and storage space. It’s always wise to check with your cruise line beforehand.

Q7: Do I need different outfits for indoor and outdoor activities on the ship?

A: While there’s no strict rule, comfort is key. Light, breathable outfits are best for sunbathing or outdoor sports. Indoors, where temperatures might be cooler due to air conditioning, consider layering with a light sweater or shawl.

Q8: Are there any clothes I should avoid packing?

A: It depends on the cruise. However, as a general rule, avoid overly casual wear (like gym shorts) in formal dining areas and ensure you have appropriate attire for religious or culturally conservative port stops.

Q9: How can I minimize wrinkles in my packed clothes?

A: Rolling clothes instead of folding, using tissue paper between layers, and packing garments in dry cleaning bags can help reduce wrinkles. Additionally, many cruise cabins come equipped with irons.

Q10: Is it better to underpack or overpack for a cruise?

A: Strive for a balance. Overpacking can lead to clutter and potential baggage fees, while underpacking might leave you unprepared. Focus on versatile items that can be mixed, matched, and layered.

Q11: Are themed nights common on cruises? Should I pack specifically for them?

A: Many cruises have themed nights like tropical luaus, 80s retro parties, or pirate evenings. It’s fun to participate, but participation is often optional. Check with your cruise line for any themed evenings and pack accordingly if you’re interested.

Q12: What’s the best way to pack accessories without losing or tangling them?

A: Use jewelry organizers or small pouches to keep items separate. Necklaces can be threaded through straws or rolled in tissue paper to prevent tangling. Earrings can be fastened onto buttons to keep pairs together.

Q13: If I buy clothes or accessories during my shore excursions, are there restrictions to bring them onboard?

A: Most cruise lines allow you to bring items purchased ashore. However, items like local alcohol or certain foods might have restrictions. Always check customs regulations and the cruise line’s policies.

Q14: How should I dress for onboard activities like spas, gyms, or entertainment shows?

A: For spas, bring swimwear if they have pools or jacuzzis. Gyms require proper sportswear and shoes. Entertainment shows can range from casual to semi-formal, depending on the cruise line and the type of show.

Q15: Do cruises have shops onboard to purchase clothing or accessories?

A: Yes, most cruise ships have boutiques onboard where you can buy clothing, accessories, and even formal wear. However, prices can be higher than onshore, so it’s primarily for emergency needs or splurging.

Q16: How should I dress for dinners on non-formal nights?

A: Most cruises expect “smart casual” attire for dinners on non-formal nights. For men, this might mean slacks and a polo or button-down shirt. For women, a nice blouse with trousers or a casual dress works.

Q17: Will I need specific clothing for adventure activities during shore excursions, like hiking or water sports?

A: Absolutely. If you’ve planned activities like hiking, pack suitable footwear and clothing. For water sports, besides swimwear, consider UV-protective shirts or rash guards.

Q18: Can I rent clothing or accessories onboard?

A: Some luxury cruise lines offer tuxedo rental for men on formal nights, but it’s less common to find general clothing rental. If you think you might need something, it’s safer to pack it.

Q19: What’s the protocol for tipping on cruises and does attire play a role?

A: Tipping policies vary by cruise line. Some include gratuities in the fare; others expect passengers to tip individually. While attire doesn’t usually influence tipping, dressing respectfully in dining areas is always a good gesture.

Q20: Is there a “faux pas” in cruise clothes I should be aware of?

A: Every cruise and its passengers can have different expectations. Generally, wearing swimwear away from the pool areas, being too casual in formal dining rooms, or not adhering to themed or formal night dress codes are considered faux pas.

Embarking on a cruise is a journey of discovery – of places, cultures, and seas. The right clothing choices can enhance your experience, ensuring you’re prepared for every adventure while looking your best.

The key is balance, blending style with comfort, and elegance with practicality. Safe voyaging!

Cruise outfits: What to wear on each cruise line

A rundown of what kind of wardrobe works best on your cruise.

Trying to decide what outfits work best for an upcoming cruise? After many years of cruising, and seeing many style trends come and go, I can attest that your cruise wardrobe comes down to just three things: Your cruise line, your itinerary and your fashion mood.

You should know that many cruise ships assign a designated evening dress code each day — casual, informal, formal — that takes effect in public rooms and restaurants from 6 pm onward. Daytime, thankfully, is always an easy-breezy casual look.

istening to live piano with a cocktail in hand in Martinis on board Oceania Insignia.

Don't think that the Fashionista Police are on the lookout for violators at every turn — you're on vacation, after all! And some ships are more rigorous about enforcing the dress guidelines than others. But nobody wants to be tapped on the shoulder by a maître d' with a gentle suggestion to slip on a more appropriate sport coat.

The "Before You Go" section, available on cruise lines' websites after you've booked your cruise, usually provides details along with fashion suggestions. Typically on a seven-night ocean cruise you can count on two formal nights, a couple of casual evenings and one or three or four semi-formal occasions. Mediterranean cruises generally prove dressier than Caribbean, Mexican Riviera or French Polynesia journeys.

For river cruises, the vibe is more casual, given that there's one lounge on board and no one is expecting you to slip on an evening gown or three-piece suit.

Remember, you can always skip out of formal nights on ocean ships by dining at one of the casual eateries on board or ordering in — a choice we've made several times in our balcony staterooms with sumptuous views of the sunset.

What ‘look’ to expect on the major cruise lines

Here's our take on how to match your Fashion IQ with the following cruise lines. We'd love to hear what your experience has been, so please weigh in below in the comments!

Carnival Cruise Line

Carnival's dress code is all about casual. You'll see T-shirts, sandals and tank tops around the ship by day, while at dinnertime you can't go wrong with slacks or jeans and a short-sleeve shirt for the guys and a nice blouse, skirt or pants and flat shoes for the women. The rule is no cut-offs or swimwear during dinner, thankfully.

  • Celebrity Cruises

Casual by day, resort chic at night. The line also has formal nights but leaves the option up to the passengers if they want to wear a suit or not. Many women like to doll up a bit and some men will do the same. The days of the tuxedo are long gone, though.

  • Costa Cruises

Casual by day, not overly dressy at night.

Getting cozy in a Pool Pod on Crystal Symphony.

  • Crystal Cruises

Stylish resort wear by day, elegant by night. Men can get away with a dark suit, though you may spot the occasional tuxedo on formal occasions.

Guests in formal attire in the dining room of Cunard's Queen Mary 2.

Cunard Line

Dress codes on Cunard tend to be a little stuffier than most. The look is still informal in the day in public rooms and casual on deck, slightly formal at restaurants at lunch and  more dressy at dinner.

Days are for playing with the kids. But at night you can spiff up a little at Keys, an adults-only piano bar on Disney Magic.

Disney Cruises

Relaxed is the name of the game. Casual by day and resort casual by night.

Holland America Line

Casual by day as is the case on most ships. Evenings are for smart resort wear. The line does a casual elegance theme on some nights when guys generally opt for a sport coat, dress shirt and dress slacks or a business suit (with and without neckties). Women are asked to wear cocktail attire, evening gowns, elegant skirts, pantsuits and blouses — but can pretty much go as they choose. Personally, I like to get dressed up on those nights; it just feels good.

MSC Cruises

Casual by day, chic resort wear in evenings to dressy duds on formal nights.

The vibe is informal, but not scruffy, at Cagney's on Norwegian Dawn.

Norwegian Cruise Line

Casual by day, typical cruise wear at night, maybe a little dressy at Cagney's but not overly so.

Attire is upscale but casual in Oceania Riviera's Red Ginger restaurant.

  • Oceania Cruises

Country club casual is the theme night and day, no tuxedos ever expected.

The focus is on relaxing in paradise during sailings to French Polynesia on the Paul Gauguin.

Paul Gauguin Cruises

All you need by day on Tahitian cruises are bathing suits, shorts, sarongs and jeans. By night the women often opt for chic tropical outfits (think French Riviera casual chic) while the guys slip on aloha shirts and slacks. For shore excursion or touring on your own, you'll see lots of shorts, T-shirts and even bathing suits.

Guests who choose a Balcony Stateroom on a Princess cruise get to dress as they'd like and soak up the views on their private veranda.

  • Princess Cruises

At Princess, the style is casual by day, smart resort wear at night. For formal nights, you'll see tuxedos, suits or jackets and ties for the men. About half the women I’ve seen on more than three dozen cruises dressed up, while too many others donned muumuus or silly frocks. (Come on, ladies, up your game!)

  • Regent Seven Seas

Country club casual is what this uptown cruise line is all about. You can wear jeans, shorts and the like during the day, but no denim at night. You will feel right at home with nice slacks and shirts or blouses, cocktail dresses or pantsuits at night. Some folks do doll up but it's up to you just how dressy you want to be. I like to dress for dinner, it just feels right.

Attire ranges from the upscale to the casual — but not overly prim and proper — at 150 Central Park aboard Royal Caribbean's Oasis of the Seas.

  • Royal Caribbean

With thousands of guests on all sorts of large ships, the general rule of thumb is casual by day, a mixed bag at night, leaning more to suits than tuxedoes on formal night.

Enjoy pre-dinner and after dinner music played on the piano at the Observation Bar aboard Seabourn cruises.

Casual chic by day, tres chic by night. Perhaps half the men will wear tuxedos and every woman will dress to the nines either in a cocktail number or long gown.

Casual chic by day; striking and stunning at night. Lots of tuxedos and gorgeous gowns plus plenty of bling on display, especially on formal nights.

  • Virgin Voyages

Casual chic by day; playful and smart by night. If it has an edgy vibe, all the better. No formal nights on a Virgin cruise.

Walk barefoot in the surf during a Windstar Cruise odyssey to the tropics.

  • Windstar Cruises

Yuppie, Gen-Xer, Armani, Gap — nary a tuxedo or suit in sight. You’re OK with Dockers, jeans, Aloha shirts, sundresses, preppie pants for men at night and linens or casual silks for women.

What has been your experience? Any different?

Final Caribbean Cruise Packing Tips

  • One of the most recommended items for a cruise is a hanging toiletry bag because counter space will be limited on board the ship. Plus, they’re easy to pack and keep things super organized!

  • A tote bag will be useful to carry your sea pass, sunscreen, hat, sunglasses, and other essentials you’ll want throughout the day.

I did not see pajamas mentioned. I like to travel with pj’s that look more like lounging outfits in case I venture on our balcony or need to evacuate the room quickly or someone comes to the door.

Alex

Hi Carol, many TFG readers wonder why I never include pajamas in the packing lists. The answer is that they are not part of the essential capsule wardrobe items. I count them as extra pieces of clothing. Ideally, the pieces you choose could also be worn for other activities — not just sleeping.

So love how you make your pjs multi purpose!

Barbara Ryan

I am going on my first cruise and am excited to try some of these! I did find that the travel toiletry bag doesn’t fold up nicely if it’s too full.

Keni

We just booked our first long post-covid trip….a 10 Day cruise to the Caribbean. We’ve been there many times but it’s a bit overwhelming to get back into the “travel mode”. Thank you for all the wonderful information you provide for all of us!!!

Bernadette Olejko-Gadaleta

Never bothered to rent a tux for my S.O. when we first started cruising, Our first cruise we got a tux on ebay for 50$, in the past few years got a new one for 100$ for our sons wedding on ebay. Was reused on cruises…Tux rental is super expensive on board. These days there’s a huge trend away from super formal nights..so a tux is no loner expected.

Erin

We wear a tux always on formal night. The only “trend away” is people basically don’t make the effort. The staff actually very much appreciates and acknowledges the effort to wear one

Marian

Love these great ideas. Hope to travel here soon! I

What to Wear on a Cruise: The Ultimate Guide

Last updated: November 7th, 2023

Guests hanging out for drinks in smart casual attire onboard Celebrity Cruises

  • Find a Cruise

If you’re having trouble figuring out what to wear on a cruise, don’t worry, we’re here to help. Packing a suitcase for your upcoming vacation onboard shouldn’t be difficult—in fact, it’s all part of the fun.

The key is to know exactly what to expect onboard and to familiarize yourself with Celebrity Cruises’ “Relaxed Luxury”. Here are some tips that will help you decide what to wear on a cruise to get ready for smooth, stylish sailing.

What clothes should you wear on a cruise?

What to wear on a cruise depends on where you’re sailing. While many of our cruises sail to warm beach destinations such as The Bahamas and the Caribbean , we do offer cooler weather cruises to places like Alaska and the Mediterranean during shoulder season that require warmer clothes like jackets and waterproof wear.

If you’re traveling to a warm and sunny destination, here are some things you should wear on your cruise:

Couple drinking cocktails by the pool

While onboard, you’ll be spending a lot of your time in the pool or lounging nearby on the sun deck. You’ll also be sporting swimwear at many of the ports you visit  during your trip. Therefore, it’s a good idea to pack a handful of swimsuits in your bag. Aim to bring at least three if you’re going on a seven-day cruise.

Swim coverups

While it’s perfectly acceptable to stay in your swimsuit while lounging beside the pool, you’ll need a cover-up to walk from your stateroom to the pool, and vice-versa. Keep in mind, depending on where your stateroom or suite is located, you may go through other common areas of the ship (in addition to the elevators) on your way to the pool. Make sure your swim cover-up is something you will feel comfortable in while walking around others.

People on a beach

Sweater or fleece

Even if you’re taking a cruise around the Caribbean , it’s smart to take a light sweater or fleece to wear at night when the temperature tends to cool down. After all, you won’t want to get chilly while enjoying the starry sky from your stateroom veranda or on one of the ship’s decks.

Scarf or pashmina

This is an easy clothing item you can drape over your shoulders to dress up an outfit, or to warm you up if you’re outside and there is a chill in the air. You may also be required to cover your head and shoulders if entering a mosque, or bare arms if visiting a church, so pack something that enables you to respect the local culture.

Bring some fun pieces to accessorize your outfit. You may also want to buy some new items while shopping in the ship’s boutiques, so remember to leave a little extra room in your suitcase just in case.

Woman smiling while wearing a sun hat

Sunglasses and sun hats

Aside from lathering up on the SPF, protect yourself from all that sunshine by bringing a sun visor, baseball cap, or wide-brimmed straw hat on your cruise—ideally, one that won’t blow away in a sea breeze. You should also bring at least one pair of sunglasses on board.

Read: What to Pack for a Caribbean Cruise

Even if you typically use your phone as a clock, bringing a watch on board will help you keep a more accurate eye on the time throughout the day. You’ll want to get to all of the ship’s daily activities on time, and a watch can be extra helpful during your port stops to make sure you get back to the ship on time before it departs.

Couple using binocular while sightseeing on a cruise

Casual, comfortable attire

T-shirts, tank tops, shorts, sundresses, and skirts are all perfectly fine clothes to wear on a cruise ship to have lunch in the Oceanview Cafe and other restaurants with a casual dress code. You can also dine in casual pool clothes at the snack bar located next to the pool deck.

What to wear on a cruise - smart casual

Dinner or “smart casual” attire

If you’re having dinner in the main restaurant or any meal at one of the specialty restaurants , you’ll follow a “smart casual” dress code on most nights. This means long pants, jeans, a dress or skirt, a stylish top, or a button-down.

We want our guests to feel comfortable, so Celebrity Cruises’ dress code for smart casual is fairly flexible, though there are some restrictions. T-shirts, swimsuits, robes, bare feet, tank tops, baseball caps, and pool wear are not allowed in the main restaurant or specialty restaurants at any time. In addition, shorts and flip-flops are not permitted during the evening hours.

The smart casual dress code works for all areas of the ship in the evening, including in bars and lounges and during shows and events at the ship’s theater.

If you’re headed for Alaska or northern Europe, or the Mediterranean in the cooler months, think about packing these items:

Wicking tops, lightweight fleeces, and even pants that zip off into shorts are all a good idea for Alaska, especially if you’re out hiking.

Waterproofs

Some of the world’s most beautiful scenery gets that lush shade of green for a reason; the occasional rain shower. Bring a waterproof that folds down small, and a waterproof cover for your camera.

What kind of shoes should you wear on a cruise?

What to wear on a cruise - comfortable shoes

Footwear should not be an afterthought when packing your suitcase for a cruise. While you might have the urge to throw in a pair of flip flops and call it a day, there are a few other essential shoes you’ll need to bring along on your trip.

Flip flops, sandals, or waterproof slides

These shoes will take you back and forth from your stateroom to the pool and vice versa. They also come in handy if you choose to visit the onboard spa . Lightweight water shoes are great for some ports in the Mediterranean, where beaches tend to be pebbly.

Sneakers or comfortable walking shoes

If you’re planning on doing a lot of walking around the ship during days at sea, it’s a good idea to pack a pair of sneakers or other comfortable walking shoes. Sneakers will also be useful if you try out a fitness class or use the gym equipment in the ship’s state-of-the-art fitness center.

If you’re headed somewhere like Norway or Alaska where hiking is one of the most popular activities, it’s worth packing a good pair of walking boots.

Shoes or sandals for dinner

Since flip flops are not allowed in the evening, make sure to bring comfortable shoes or sandals to wear during dinner in the main room.

Do you have to dress up on a cruise?

People in smart casual attire following Celebrity Cruises dress code for dinner

While of course you’re welcome to stay in your swimsuit almost all day long on a cruise, there are certain occasions when Celebrity Cruises dress code requests otherwise.

If you’re wondering what to wear on a cruise during dinner in the main dining room, meals at specialty restaurants, or shows in the theater, the Celebrity Cruises dress code for these occasions is usually “smart casual”. This means a dress or skirt, stylish pants, smart jeans, a stylish top or button-down. We’d prefer that shorts, tank tops and flip flops were kept for the pool.

What do you wear on a dressier night on a cruise?

Lovely couple in Evening Chic outfit following Celebrity Cruises dress code

Our more formal nights are called “Evening Chic” nights because they’re all about guests looking their absolute best—and loving it. These are the nights when you want to dress up in your most fashion-forward and stylish clothes, while also being elegant and sophisticated.

The Celebrity Cruises dress code for Evening Chic nights is cocktail dresses, skirts, pants, or designer jeans with an elegant top, or dress shirt, button-down shirt, or sweater, and an optional blazer. There’s no need to wear a tie unless you want to.

Couple in Eden restaurant

Our Evening Chic dress code leaves a lot of room for you to show off your personal style, although we’d ask you to leave your ripped jeans or favorite college sweatshirt in your stateroom. You can wear anything from designer denim paired with a blazer to a cocktail dress with a killer set of heels.

If you were looking forward to wearing a tuxedo or formal gown on Evening Chic nights, you can absolutely do that as well. There is no such thing as being overdressed on Evening Chic nights.

All cruises that are seven nights or longer will feature two Evening Chic nights. Shorter cruises feature one Evening Chic night. On all other nights of the cruise, guests are asked to wear smart casual attire.

If for whatever reason you choose to skip Evening Chic nights, you can always dine in one of the specialty restaurants (in smart casual attire) or at the snack bar located next to the pool deck.

What do you wear on cruises during the day?

Women wearing casual outfit

On Celebrity Cruises, we want you to feel as comfortable as possible while onboard. During the day, we encourage you to wear casual attire such as t-shirts, tank tops, shorts, sundresses, and skirts.

If you’re spending the day at the pool, you can also have lunch or dine in casual pool clothes at the Mast Grill located next to the pool deck.

Just remember that while walking from your stateroom to the pool and vice versa, you’ll need to wear a swim cover up.

You’ll also be required to wear appropriate clothing in the Fitness Center; suitable shoes for the treadmills and exercise bikes, for example, just as you would in the gym at home.

If you plan to use the spa, which we would encourage, don’t worry about bringing a robe; these are provided for you.

Layering is key , so don’t be afraid to add a few extra pieces to your outfit. A cozy sweater or cardigan is a must-have, as well as a versatile jacket or coat. You can mix and match these pieces to create different looks and stay warm in changing weather conditions.

Tips for Planning and Organizing Your Cruise Outfits

Planning your cruise outfits can be a daunting task, but with a little creativity and foresight, you can pack efficiently and look stylish without overpacking. Here are some tips to help you figure out what to wear aboard the ship:

1. Research the dress code: Most cruise lines have strict dress codes for formal nights and dinner dress codes. Make sure to check your cruise line’s website and pack accordingly.

2. Make a list: Create a packing list to ensure you don’t forget any essential items. A packing list will help you stay organized and ensure you have everything you need before you board the ship .

3. Pack versatile pieces: Select outfits that you can mix and match. Pack basic, neutral items such as white t-shirts, black pants, and denim shorts that can be worn with different accessories and shoes to create multiple outfits.

4. Use a packing cube: To make packing easier and more organized, use a packing cube. A packing cube is a bag that you can use to store your clothes and separate them from your other belongings. It’s perfect for keeping your outfits organized and wrinkle-free.

5. Bring a bag: Bring a tote bag or backpack that you can use during your shore excursions. It’s practical and ensures that you have enough space to store any items you may need during your day trips.

6. Dress comfortably: Choose outfits that are both stylish and comfortable. Comfortable shoes are especially crucial for shore excursions. Also, pack breathable clothing for warm weather destinations.

7. Be mindful of limited luggage space: Avoid overpacking and try to fit everything into one suitcase. Use the space wisely and roll up your clothes instead of folding them to maximize space.

8. Pack an outfit for the first day: Pack an outfit that you’ll wear on embarkation day. It should be comfortable and practical for exploring the ship or lounging by the pool.

9. Don’t forget the accessories: Accessories such as scarves, hats, and jewelry can add style and color to your outfits. Pack some statement accessories that you can use to dress up your basic items.

By following these simple tips, you’ll be able to plan your cruise outfits with ease, ensuring that you board the ship with everything you need to look and feel your best.

12 Cruise Outfits You’ll Love to Wear

Taking a cruise is a once in a lifetime experience. Cruising gives you the chance to relax by the pool, sightsee & shop at various ports, go on thrilling excursions and dine on incredible meals. A cruise is the ultimate vacation! Plan your cruise outfits carefully and not only will you look good in your photos but you’ll also be able to travel relatively light. Read my complete cruise ship packing list with printable PDF checklist that you can download.

Wondering what to wear on a cruise? Cruise ship attire can be a little tricky to plan, especially if this is your first cruise. Cruise attire varies from a bathing suit & cover up to cocktail dresses and if you’re not careful you can end up way overpacking. With this post, I’ve put together 12 outfits for a cruise that will take you from excursions to evening easily, without stuffing your suitcase. You’ll see that all my cruise clothing can be mixed and matched to create multiple cruise ship outfits from just a few key pieces.

These Caribbean cruise outfits are by no means definitive but I just want to show you how easy cruise wear can be to put together when you know how. With seven basic pieces you can build so many different outfits for cruise activities and excursions, pack light and, most importantly, look fantastic.

Note that this is all Caribbean cruise attire but almost all these outfits would work for a Mediterranean cruise also. You can read my European Cruise Packing List post here.

If you’re looking for advice on what to wear on an Alaskan cruise, please see my Alaska Cruise Packing List for lots of ideas as your outfits for this will be much, much different than the ones listed below.

Cruise Wardrobe Essentials

For a full list of what to bring on a cruise, read my Ultimate Cruise Packing List here.  We also just on our first cruise with Carnival so I created a Carnival cruise packing list too .

My cruise wardrobe ideas are all built on a few key pieces. With these few items and a few well-chosen accessories you can create so many outfits to wear on a cruise! You’ll notice that all the accessories I’ve picked to go with this cruise dress attire have been repeated throughout the outfits. I’ve included plus-size alternatives to the key basic pieces and of course the accessories are all plus-size friendly. I have also tried to pick affordable pieces with many  items coming in under $35.

  • White bermuda shorts   – Add a pair of denim shorts too and double the amount of outfits you have. If you don’t do shorts, you can switch these out for capri pants.
  • Striped t-shirts   – A couple of striped t-shirts are perfect for a cruise and nicely nautical.
  • White jeans   – White jeans or pants are a great cruise outfit. If you don’t want to wear jeans, you can switch these out for linen pants or capri pants. See my list of the best travel pants for more ideas.
  • Sundress   – So simple and easy. I’ve gone for a royal blue here but this dress comes in lots of colors. Add a black one in for even more outfit options.
  • Maxi dress  – Easy and comfortable to wear on travel days, around the ship or when you feel your waist expanding from all the delicious food onboard! A solid is more versatile than a print but you could easily bring along a second dress in a print.
  • Black jumpsuit  – Stylish and versatile. You can build so many cruise outfits ideas with a black jumpsuit as a base. If you’re not comfortable trying out a jumpsuit a black maxi dress would work instead.
  • Kimono   – A super lightweight addition to any women’s wardrobe and one of the best cruise wardrobe items. It can be used as a pool cover up with a bathing suit and flip flops.

Here are my Ideas for Best Cruise Outfits!

Bright maxi dress for day.

A maxi dress is one of the best outfits for cruise ship passengers because it is lightweight, comfortable and works with many body types. Just remember to pack a suitable bra if you’re getting one like this with spaghetti straps.

  • White cat eye Ray Ban sunglasses
  • Floral print scarf
  • Brown beach tote
  • Tan sandals

Plus size option:

Bright Maxi Dress Dressed Up for Evening

  • Black & teal statement necklace & earrings
  • Peacock print sequinned purse
  • Gold wedge sandals

Colourful Tunic with Shorts for Day

This is perfect casual cruise attire for on or off the ship.

  • Colorful tunic
  • White vest top for underneath
  • White bermuda shorts

Plus size options:

  • White bermuda shorts or capri pants if you’re not comfortable in shorts
  • Pink tunic or blue print tunic or aqua tunic

Colorful Tunic with White Jeans for Evening

  • Gold statement necklace
  • Gold wristlet purse
  • White jeans

Black Jumpsuit for Sightseeing Excursion

A black jumpsuit is one of the best outfits for a cruise! It’s so versatile and stylish.

  • Black jumpsuit
  • Aviator sunglasses

Black Jumpsuit for Formal Dining

This jumpsuit goes easily from daywear to attire for Captain’s dinner on a cruise just by switching out the accessories for more glamorous options. If you don’t want to do a jumpsuit then a black dress would also make perfect cruise dinner attire.

  • Black sheer & beaded bolero
  • Black strappy heels
  • Sequin bolero

Striped T-Shirt for Easy Excursions

A nautical-inspired striped t-shirt is one of the nicest cruise wear ideas. Comfortable, practical and easy to wear. I like this one because it’s slightly longer length means it covers my butt but could also be knotted at the side or tucked in and flounced over jeans.

  • Striped t-shirt
  • Sketchers Go Walk sneakers

Striped T-Shirt for Smart Casual Dining

  • Blue statement necklace

Kimono with Sundress for Day

This is classic cruise casual attire and would work for a city sightseeing excursion or a day at the beach. The kimono provides good sun coverage for your back & shoulders and can be worn over a swimsuit as a beach coverup also.

  • Sundress (Same dress as picture, goes up to 3XL)

Kimono with Chiffon Vest & White Jeans for Evening

  • Chiffon tank top
  • Longer length vest top – the one pictured above does go up to 2XL though

Simple Sundress for Informal Evening

Dressed up sundress for formal dining.

Cruise ship dinner attire for formal dining evenings doesn’t have to be a cocktail dress or evening gown. You can dress up a simple sundress with the right accessories.

I hope you enjoyed my cruise wardrobe planner!

These cruise clothes ideas are based on my own experience on two Caribbean cruises. I way overpacked my Caribbean cruise wardrobe on my first cruise. I didn’t know what proper cruise attire was so packed much more than I needed, just in case. By my second cruise I had some practical experience on cruise attire ideas based on what other travelers wore on board and what I did and didn’t use from my first experience. On my second cruise our whole family of four managed to travel in just one carry on backpack!

On my first cruise with RCL I did note that Royal Caribbean cruise attire was slightly dressier in my experience than what we observed on our second cruise with Norwegian. As mentioned above, we just went on a Carnival cruise too so I have put together a packing list for that also.

Now you should have some really good ideas on proper cruise attire for women. Be sure to drop me a comment below to let me know if this blog post helped you pack for your cruise.

This is some awesome information for my first cruise. I always seem to pack to much. This helps to know how to mix n match perfectly! Thanks

Thanks Kay! I’m glad it’s helpful!

This is great! Has given me lots of ideas for my first cruise. Thanks

' src=

Great idea’s! Going on my 2nd cruise on the 19th!

Awesome Karri! Where are you cruising to on this trip?

We’re going to Montego Bay, Georgetown and Cozumel on Carnival!

' src=

I am going on my first cruise…a New England cruise on Carnival Sunshine in early September ….what are some suggestions to pack as I am not sure of the weather at that time of year..

' src=

Great ideas for a cruise wardrobe and I really like all the outfits.

' src=

Thank you for the great cruise wardrobe ideas! We are cruising the Mediterranean at the beginning of October. Do I pack for the Fall/seaon or ignore the season for cruise wear?

' src=

Love, love, love this post! Thank you so much for breaking down the clothing into outfits. I am going on a ten day cruise to the Caribbean in February. I am following your packing suggestions. Our cruise will be on an Italian ship (MSC Divina) leaving from Miami. We will be visiting the US Virgin Islands, St. Kitts & Nevis, Martinique, Barbados, and Guadeloupe.

Have you tried the black jumpsuit that you reference on Amazon? I am considering buying it, but I was wondering what your experience has been with it.

As for sandals, I love the Abeo brand available from the Walking Company because of the arch support that they provide. I’ve had plantar fasciitis before, so now I always wear shoes with good arch support.

Awesome Karen! I have plantar fasciitis on and off too so definitely wear comfy sandals. How tall are you? The jumpsuit is long but I’m only 5’2″ so needed it taken up.

' src=

This is a brilliant list and I’m even more grateful for the plus sized versions! This will make things so simple! ?

Thanks for the compliment Jennifer! Gotta represent for the plus size ladies! 🙂

' src=

I like the combinations but do you really need a hand bag or clutch on a cruise? I never carry a bag so I don’t get it.

No, you don’t need it. Sometimes it’s just nice to have to complete the outfit though. You don’t need it for cash of course but for your cruise card and a bit of extra lipstick to touch up after dinner is always nice. Especially if you’re having photos on formal night.

' src=

This was so helpful as I plan my first cruise in April. We are sailing on the Summit from San Juan on a 7 day trip. I am a planner and guilty of overpacking, overthinking scenarios. We are doing 2 excursions and have to consider that attire as well. Thank you

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) About Cruise Outfits:

Q1: How can I dress stylishly for a cruise without overpacking? Opt for versatile pieces that can be mixed and matched to create multiple outfits. Choose neutral colors and focus on items that can be layered for different looks, allowing you to maximize your wardrobe without overloading your luggage.

Q2: What should I wear for casual daytime activities on the ship? For casual daytime activities, consider breezy maxi dresses, nautical-inspired ensembles, and comfortable separates like shorts paired with chic tops. Accessorize with wide-brimmed hats and stylish sandals for a relaxed yet put-together look.

Q3: How do I transition from daytime exploration to dinner on board without changing completely? Opt for dresses or jumpsuits that effortlessly transition from day to night with a change of accessories. Consider versatile cover-ups or cardigans that add a touch of elegance to your daytime outfit and keep you warm in air-conditioned spaces.

Q4: What type of footwear is suitable for exploring ports and onboard activities? Choose comfortable and supportive footwear for onshore excursions, such as comfortable sneakers or walking sandals. For onboard relaxation, opt for stylish flip-flops or espadrilles that offer both comfort and style.

Q5: Can I wear swimsuits and cover-ups for lunch or casual onboard activities? Absolutely. Many cruise ships have relaxed dress codes for daytime activities, allowing you to enjoy meals and leisurely moments in your swimwear and chic cover-ups.

Q6: How can I elevate my evening attire without packing too many formal outfits? Focus on statement accessories like elegant jewelry, statement shoes, and sophisticated clutches that can transform your dinner dress into an enchanting evening ensemble.

Q7: Are there any clothing items I should avoid packing for a cruise? Avoid overpacking by leaving behind items you won’t wear, like heavy formal gowns or unnecessary high heels. Instead, focus on versatile pieces that match the cruise’s casual elegance.

Q8: What can I do to ensure my cruise outfits remain wrinkle-free during the journey? Pack wrinkle-resistant fabrics like jersey, knit, and lightweight cotton. Rolling clothes instead of folding can also help minimize wrinkles and save space in your suitcase.

Q9: Are there any fashion guidelines I should be aware of when cruising to different destinations? While cruise dress codes vary, it’s always a good idea to research the cultural norms of the destinations you’ll be visiting. Pack attire that respects local customs while staying true to your personal style.

Q10: How can I maintain my outfits while aboard a cruise ship with limited laundry facilities? Pack mix-and-match items that allow you to create various outfits from a few key pieces. Quick-dry fabrics can also be a lifesaver for laundering essentials while onboard.

Cruise Style

By Splendid Rags

I just got back from an AMAZING cruise to the Caribbean thanks to Carnival Cruise Line ! Gosh this trip was incredible and the ship was BEAUTIFUL! Walking around the deck and checking out the scenery was one of my favorite things to do. Below are some outfits and accessories I wore to make me feel like I was “cruising in style.”

When vacationing in the Caribbean, I highly recommend wearing linen. It’s a light and comfortable fabric perfect for being in the sun. I also recommend a good “wedge” shoe! I wore these wedges a lot… they’re neutral so they go with everything and are very comfortable because they have a lot of support!

Wearing a hat is necessary while cruising. I found most of the time it was pretty windy on the ship, so doing my hair was just not practical. I honestly wore this panama hat EVERYDAY! It’s the perfect “vacation” hat and the brim was long enough to shade my eyes.

Bring a watch!! You go through so many different times zones it was hard to know what time it was. I use my phone to rely on time, but the phone isn’t accurate according to “ship time”. Wearing a watch was very helpful.

I believe in wearing a bold print. It helps you stand out from the crowd. I received SO MANY compliments on this dress! Plus, it’s lightweight and comfortable.

Less layers the better when cruising.

Another practical tip for “cruisin’ in style” is ditching your underwear…for your bathing suit!! I found myself always wearing a bathing suit under my clothes because I never knew when I felt like taking a dip in the pool, hopping in one of the many jacuzzis, or going down that epic slide! It was a pain to go to the room every time I wanted to change into my suit. So I started incorporating it in my outfits.

I recommend wearing a good deck shoe on board. I wore my white ones almost every day! They seamlessly transitioned from outfit to outfit.

I love a good bikini. For me personally, I found myself wearing a “high waisted” bikini bottom during the week. With the amount of amazing food I was eating on the ship, my high waisted bikini came in very handy!

There was only one day where it was a bit cooler. I wore long linen pants and a lightweight trench coat. Of course, I still kept my bikini rule and it was a good thing I did…in a few moments I found myself in a nearby jacuzzi watching the sunset.

My last night on the ship I decided to go with a “sailor theme”. When in Rome, right?

This post was created for Away We Go with Carnival , the destination for getting in the getaway state of mind.

At 60, Tom Cruise is Hollywood's best-dressed veteran

By Zak Maoui

At 60-years old Tom Cruise has been slaying in a series of impressive, fuss-free fits that just work for the Top Gun: Maverick superstar

Having just celebrated his 60th birthday, Tom Cruise is still shining in the style stakes. Take for instance the actor's recent press tour for the record-breaking hit that was Top Gun: Maverick . Not only did he flex a gym-honed bod that rivalled that of the one he flaunted way back in Risky Business , he also demonstrated the proper way for a man to dress in their autumn years. While Jeff Goldblum is all about in-your-face looks, Cruise is more about super simple outfits, sharply-tailored Brioni suits , with a little flamboyance by way of a velour Tom Ford polo shirt here and there.

It's hardly surprising Cruise is nailing his fits. He had his debut role in 1981's Endless Love , but it wasn't until the release of Risky Business , in which he plays teen Joel Goodson, that things really started to heat up for the actor. Following that breakthrough role, throughout the Eighties and Nineties he was one of the biggest stars of the era, alongside the likes of Brad Pitt and Leonardo Dicaprio. He was also recognised for his daring yet achievable style, which comprised lofty leather jackets, ultra-short shorts and über tight tees, jazzy shirts worn under louche suits and, often, the odd bolo tie.

But it's the latter incarnation of Cruise we're here to celebrate, so here we present to you Tom's most fire fits from recent months to help inform your own wardrobe choices.

Sometimes a simple charcoal knit and a pair of smart tailored trousers just works. No fuss no frills.

Embracing Cruise Fashion Trends

Nautical Inspired Styles

One of the most enduring cruise fashion trends is the nautical-inspired look. Embrace navy and white stripes, anchor motifs, and boat shoes to capture the essence of life at sea. Nautical styles are not only timeless but also effortlessly chic, making them a perfect choice for both day and evening wear on your cruise.

Resort Wear

Resort wear encompasses a range of styles that blend comfort with luxury. Think flowy maxi dresses, wide-brimmed hats, and oversized sunglasses. This relaxed yet elegant look is perfect for lounging on the deck, sipping cocktails by the pool, or strolling through picturesque coastal towns.

Fashion Trends

For those who appreciate a touch of nostalgia, cruise fashion offers opportunities to channel vintage glamour. Consider retro-inspired swimsuits with high waists and polka dots for a classic pin-up look. Vintage accessories like cat-eye sunglasses and silk scarves add a dash of old-world charm to your cruise attire.

Sustainable Fashion

In recent years, sustainable fashion has made its mark on the cruise industry. Eco-conscious travelers can choose clothing made from organic materials, recycled fabrics, or upcycled fashion items. Not only do you look good, but you also feel good knowing that your choices contribute to a greener planet.

The Best Looks From the Resort 2025 Collections

a look from chanel resort 2025

The fashion industry’s rigorous presentation cycle can feel like a dogged train at times, going round and round, all year long, without stopping. But the resort (or cruise as it’s often called) shows are often the antidote to all that routine. There’s typically a freshness and excitement that comes with resort runways—both in the clothes and show venues—that allows for a reprieve from the grind of the fashion calendar. Chanel championed that idea when it kicked off the resort shows on May 2nd, once again returning to the South of France —this time, the seaside city of Marseille. The usual friends of the house were in attendance in the front row, cooled by a salty breeze on an overcast day.

Lily-Rose Depp wasn’t bothered by the weather, however, attending the event in a cropped black top and floral pink miniskirt. She and other VIPs took in Viard’s latest designs of knit sets and tweed tunics over matching shorts. White, lithe pieces blew in the wind, while bright yellows and greens conjured up images of warmer days by the sea.

Here, a look at all the highlights of the resort/cruise season. Check back often as we track the latest and greatest to hit the runways.
