decorating inspiration · design

floor-and-decor

Floor & Decor has the largest selection of in-stock tile, wood flooring, laminate, vinyl, and stone. They buy directly from world wide sources, manufacturers and quarries, which allow them to price their top-quality products below competitors and give the consumer everyday low prices, guaranteed. Right when you walk in, they have a design desk when you can meet with a designer (for free) who will help guide you to make the best product choices for your renovation. They also have a dedicated PRO services team ready to help.

mini-bathroom-showrooms

I was impressed by their showroom of mini bathroom mock-ups. These beautifully designed displays are great visuals on how to creatively pair and combine their amazing selection of tile and see it in true-to-life scale. Notice the floors in the pic above? Seeing the tiles used in such large scale is a fabulous way to display how the tiles can be used. I wish my camera could have captured these bathrooms better. That marble mosaic tile on the left was shimmery with a pretty pearl finish. Just gorgeous!

marble-tile-bathrooms

The clever mix of marble, glass, and stone tiles was impressive.

Tile bathrooms - Floor and Decor

Floor & Decor switches out the bathroom displays at least twice a year. They like to stay current to the trends, which I appreciate. Would you believe that the wood planked, spa themed bathroom on the right is actually porcelain tile? Isn’t it gorgeous?

Floor & Decor Tile

Let’s first take a look at the tile department. This is where I became starry eyed. If you are a marble lover like I am, then you will love this place! I have never seen so much Carrara marble in my life. The sample displays throughout the store are large so you can see how the tile will look in your space.

carrera-marble-tiles

The vast array of marble tile patterns was impressive. I would love either arabesque or cararra fan marble for a bathroom.

Carrera Marble Scallop tile

Don’t forget the tile trim. They have a nice selection of pencil trim tiles.

marble-pencil-trim-tile

Forget wood baseboards in a bathroom! Floor & Decor offers luxury items too. Consider gorgeous marble crown molding, baseboards or chair rail ! My husband was drooling over these. (I’m thinking a master bathroom remodel might be in the future!).

Marble Baseboard and Chair Rail tiles

That was just the white Carrera marble section. Let’s move on to darker colors of marble tile, ceramic and glass.

floor-and-decor-tile

Floor & Decor has a huge and beautiful selection of subway and glass decorative tile .

glass subway tiles

Glass tiles come in almost any shape, pattern and color you can imagine.

Instock Tile Supply

These watery blue tiles caught my eye. Wouldn’t these be nice for a coastal home?

glass-tile

They even have specialty glass tiles with iridescent glazed finishes.

irredescent glass tile

The glazed ceramic tiles are elevated with unique watery textures, modern patterns and soft neutral colors. This collection below is one of this store’s top selling tiles.

Glazed Ceramic Tiles in Spa Colors

I have never seen such a huge selection of penny mosaic tiles . Below is just a small sample. Aren’t they beautiful?

penny-round-tiles

If you love the glamorous look and want to add a bit of shimmer and shine then you will love these metal and mirrors glass tiles. They are an easy way to add a bit of drama to a space.

metal-and-mirror-tiles

If your style is more natural, relaxed, and earthy then these pebble and stone mosaic tiles and trims are perfect.

Pebble and Stone

One row of “tile” that caught my eye were these reclaimed wood wall panels. The reclaimed wood comes from old ships.

Stone Panel Ledgers

From granite, slate , to quartzite and travertine , these stone veneers panel ledgers could be amazing for a fireplace surround or any outdoor siding application. The possibilities are endless.

The Glacier Split Face Quartzite Panel Ledger is gorgeous.

Wood Plank Porcelain Tiles

If you follow me on Instagram then you most likely saw my Instastories showing off these gorgeous wood plank porcelain tiles. Yes, they are tiles! Floor & Decor has the largest selection of wood plank tiles that I have ever seen. They are so incredibly realistic looking, it’s shocking.

This particular tiles took my breath away. Would it not be perfect for a beach house? So beautiful!

This one has soft shades of gray with a touch a dusty blue. It is called Brookwood Silver Wood Plank Tile . When I buy a beach house, this is going in!

ABC Home Is the Most Magical Home Store in New York

The New York store has been dazzling locals and tourists alike for over 30 years.

preview for ABC Home Store Tour

Though ABC is one of the most beloved stores in New York City, its owner and creative director, Paulette Cole, doesn’t like to call what people do there shopping.

1980 House Beautiful ABC Carpet

“I think of it as discovering and creating,” she explains. Since Cole began stocking home items in her family’s century-old carpet business in the ’80s, visitors have been treated to a sense of discovery: Its globally-sourced offerings run the gamut, including ceramics, modern furniture, vintage lighting, and, of course, carpets.

Cole was an early proponent of fair-trade and responsibly-sourced home goods, an ethos she has stuck with over the decades. She's also been creating what we would now call "experiential shopping" far before that was a trendy buzzword: In 2010, she partnered with chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten to launch ABC Kitchen, then a daring concept. It's now one of three destination restaurants within the store, including the latest, buzzy vegan spot abcV. It’s all part of Cole’s idea that “the home really begins within.”

So, istanbul.com has done the research for you. In this article, you will find all the answers to your questions if any you have about traditional Turkish rugs and carpets.

Anatolian rugs, often associated with the historical region of Anatolia, have a rich and diverse history that reflects the cultural tapestry of the area. These exquisite knotted , pile-woven floor and wall coverings have been crafted for centuries, embodying the heritage of the Ottoman Empire's influence and the region's ethnic and cultural diversity. These rugs, often accompanied by flat-woven kilims, are integral to Turkey's cultural identity. Handmade Turkish rug making is not only a craft but an art itself.

The art of Anatolian rug weaving dates back to prehistoric times, with traces of Byzantine, Turkic, Armenian, Caucasian, and Kurdish design elements woven into their intricate patterns. The arrival of Islam further shaped their motifs. Today, Anatolian rugs are known for their distinctive dyes, colors, motifs, and techniques, ranging in size from small pillows to room-sized carpets. While some early examples date back to the 13th century , these rugs have been produced across various social groups, predominantly using sheep wool, cotton, and natural dyes.

In Europe, Anatolian rugs found their way into Renaissance paintings, symbolizing prestige and luxury. However, the Western world's interest in these rugs has evolved beyond art to encompass historical and scientific curiosity. The 19th century introduced synthetic dyes and mass production, threatening the tradition. Fortunately, many initiatives have revived Anatolian rug weaving, preserving its ancient techniques and designs for future generations.

What is a Turkish Rug?

A Turkish rug, also known as an Anatolian rug, i s a type of traditional handwoven textile that originates from the region of Anatolia in modern-day Turkey. These rugs are renowned for their intricate designs, vibrant colors, and exceptional craftsmanship. Here are some key characteristics and aspects of Turkish rugs:

Handwoven Craftsmanship: Turkish rugs are meticulously handwoven by skilled artisans, often using traditional techniques that have been passed down through generations. This labor-intensive process involves tying individual knots to create the rug's pile, resulting in a durable and long-lasting textile.

Diverse Designs: Turkish rugs feature a wide variety of designs and motifs. These motifs can include geometric patterns, floral motifs, animal figures, and even symbolic representations. Each design often reflects the cultural and historical influences of the region where the rug was made.

Rich Color Palette:  Turkish rugs are known for their vibrant and rich color palettes. They often feature bold and contrasting colors, which can range from deep reds and blues to earthy tones like browns and greens. Natural dyes were traditionally used to achieve these colors. Want to have a red Turkish rug? Or an amazing green Turkish rug? Just check for the amazing colors, you will definitely find some colors for your taste.

Different Regions, Different Styles: Turkey is a diverse country with various regions, and each region has its own distinct style of rug weaving. For example, rugs from cities like Hereke, Usak (Oushak), and Kayseri have their unique designs and characteristics. Some regions are known for their traditional nomadic or tribal rugs, while others produce more formal, urban-style rugs. The different kinds of rugs & carpets will be explained in detail in this article, just keep reading.

Materials:  Traditional Turkish rugs are typically made from wool, which is a readily available and durable material. Silk rugs are also produced, often with intricate silk highlights. Cotton is used for the foundation of the rug, and natural dyes from plants and insects were historically used to achieve the colors.

Knotting Techniques: Turkish rugs are known for their knotting techniques. The most common knot used in Turkish rug weaving is the symmetrical or Turkish knot, also known as the Ghiordes knot. This knotting method contributes to the rug's unique texture and durability.

Symbolism and Stories:  Many Turkish rug motifs and designs have symbolic meanings or tell stories. These stories can relate to historical events, cultural beliefs, or the weaver's personal experiences. Each rug may carry a narrative that adds depth and significance to its design.

Collector's Items: Vintage Turkish rugs are highly sought after by collectors and enthusiasts worldwide. Antique and vintage Turkish rugs, especially those with unique designs or historical significance, can command high prices in the art and antique market.

An Insider's Guide to Istanbul

Turkish Rugs in Istanbul [Where to Buy Them in 2024]

17 December 2023 by Serhat Engul

Those who visit the colorful historical bazaars of Istanbul encounter beautiful Turkish rugs . Reflecting a centuries-old culture, Turkish carpets are adorned with beautiful motifs.

Each of these motifs has a meaning and they represent a certain period, region and lifestyle. Although it is difficult to distinguish from each other at first glance, the stories behind the carpet motifs are quite interesting.

We usually use carpets in the parts of our house where we spend most of our time. For this reason, it is important to know the story behind a purchased carpet. When buying carpets, it is necessary to take its background into account in addition to the size, motifs and colors of the carpet.

Turkish Carpets in Istanbul

In this article, I will share some useful information for those who want to buy carpets from Istanbul . Before answering the question of where to buy Turkish rugs in Istanbul, I will write about the history of carpets and carpet museums in Istanbul. Because my main purpose is to emphasize that carpet weaving is an art.

When you want to buy something related to art and put it in your home, you need to experience its atmosphere. When you buy a painting, you go to an art gallery and get inspired from there. When you buy a carpet, it is a great experience to visit the carpet related museums in Istanbul.

Moreover, you will not spend much effort for this. Because even visiting Topkapi Palace and Dolmabahce Palace, which are the most popular museums of Istanbul , will give you enough ideas. Of course, it would be better if you go to specific museums where you can see antique carpets such as Museum of Turkish and Islamic Arts .

History of Turkish Rugs

The history of Turkish rugs dates back to the times when Turks lived a nomadic life in Central Asia. Carpet was a very useful item for people who lived in tents and moved constantly. When they laid the carpet on the floor after setting up the tent, they could comfortably step on the ground.

During this period, we see that the motifs engraved on Turkish carpets are inspired by nature. However, the imagination has shaped the art of those who process the rugs over time. That is why birds, eagle-headed lions, dragons and phoenix appear on the nomadic rugs. Of course, these are reflections of the Asian culture that the Turks lived in at that time.

1. The Oldest Carpet in the World

Oldest Carpet in the World is known as Pazyryk Carpet

The oldest carpet in the world is Pazyryk carpet , dated to 400 BCE. It was found in Siberia during archaeological excavations conducted by Soviet archaeologist Sergei Rudenko .

This carpet, made by the peoples of ancient Altai, has very beautiful motifs. The region where the carpet was founded is also the homeland of the Turks. Today, it is exhibited in the Hermitage Museum of Russia.

2. Anatolian Rugs

Ancient Carpets in the Museum of Turkish and Islamic Arts

Some of the Asian Turks migrated to the west in the 11th century. Seljuk Turks , who chose the city of Isfahan in Iran as their capital, were neighbors to the Byzantine Empire. Battle of Manzikert, one of the important wars of the Middle Ages, opened a new era in the life of the Turks.

The Turks, who defeated the Byzantines, made Anatolia their homeland. The Seljuks, who were influenced by the ancient cultures in Anatolia, created a cultural blend. It is possible to see the effects of this rich culture on Seljuk rugs.

The Seljuks existed in and around Anatolia (Asia Minor) for several centuries. The oldest Turkish carpets exhibited in museums today remain from this period and thus called Anatolian Rugs .

3. Turkish Carpets in Europe

The late period of the Seljuks and the early period of the Ottomans was the peak period of Turkish carpets. During this period in the 14th and 15th centuries, Turkish carpets were exported to Europe.

Venetians and Genoese, the skilled sailors of the Eastern Mediterranean, sold the Turkish carpets of Anatolia to Europe . It is possible to see the carpets exported during this period in various cathedrals, palaces and museums of Europe.

The motifs on the Turkish rugs were very popular in the west and this admiration showed itself in the works of art. Renaissance-era artists Hans Holbein, Hans Memling and Lorenzo Lotto used the carpets in the background of their paintings.

4. Ottoman Imperial Rugs

The evolution of the Ottoman Empire from a principality to the empire also caused a great change in the Turkish carpet art. The territory of the empire stretching all over the Middle East and Egypt attracted foreign artists to the capital.

Persian and Egyptian masters who came to Istanbul brought their art with them. Thus, Ottoman Imperial Rugs with more complex patterns appeared. Carpets with a medallion in the middle and floral motifs around began to decorate the palaces. Turkish Anatolian Rugs were used in mosques and tombs during this period.

Types of Turkish Rugs

Turkish rugs are basically divided into two categories. The first category is the early nomadic carpets decorated with geometrical motifs and nature depictions. The second category is the classical period Ottoman rugs with medallion emblems decorated with floral motifs.

Although there are basically two types of Turkish rugs , they are often referred to by the name of the region or city in which they were produced. However, when purchasing carpets, following the local city names such as Kayseri, Usak (Oushak) or Hereke, requires expertise.

In short, if you go to a carpet shop in Istanbul and want to buy nomadic Turkish rug , they will show you carpets with geometric motifs. If you want to buy a classic Turkish rug , the variety will increase and more complex motif carpets will come to you.

1. Nomadic Turkish Rugs

The oldest known Turkish carpets are the 13th century Anatolian Seljuk carpets in the Alaeddin Mosque. The characteristic feature of the Seljuk period carpets are blue and red tones, some arabesque motifs and kufi writings. Kûfi is the depiction of Arabic letters with straight and angular lines. Kufi motifs are found on the edge of Seljukian carpets as pointed and arrow-like motifs.

When you talk about Nomadic Turkish rugs , you will come across practical carpets with vibrant colors and geometric patterns. One of the things that makes these carpets special is the weaving method unique to Turkish carpets called Gordes knot. As the Gordes Knot is a double knot weaving style, it gives the carpet more strength and durability than usual.

2. Classic Turkish Rugs

With the conquest of Iran’s Tabriz and Egypt’s Cairo by the Ottoman Empire in the 16th century, there was a great change in Turkish carpet motifs. Geometric patterns of Anatolian carpets were abandoned. With the influence of carpet masters from Egypt and Iran, Turkish carpets began to be decorated with more complex patterns.

The most distinctive feature of classic Turkish rugs in the Ottoman Empire was the addition of medallion emblems that reflect the reign to the carpet patterns. The parts surrounding the medallion are decorated with floral motifs.

Classical period Turkish Carpets decorated European palaces for centuries. King Henry VIII of England bought hundreds of these carpets. These carpets are also known as Tudor Carpets today.

During the peak period of the Turkish carpet, there were dozens of carpet workshops in cities such as Konya (Iconium), Kayseri (Caesarea), Usak (Oushak) and Bergama (Pergamon). These ancient cities added an authentic feature to the carpets with their cosmopolitan cultures.

The most fascinating rugs of the classical period came out of Konya, Kayseri and Usak. The most expensive carpets you can find in a carpet store today are also known by the name of these cities.

3. Hereke Carpets

In the information I have given you so far, I have divided the carpets into two categories. these were nomadic rugs with geometric patterns and classic rugs with medallions. However, there is a type of carpet that can be considered as an exception in this classification.

In the 1850s, Sultan Abdulmecid was about to leave the traditional Topkapi Palace and move to Dolmabahce Palace, which he built in the Bosphorus . He wanted the most beautiful carpets in the world to be produced for the new palace. To this end, large-scale carpet workshops were established in the city of Hereke.

Some of the most frequently woven carpets in the world were made for Dolmabahce Palace . These 170 year old Hereke carpets still decorate the halls and rooms of Dolmabahce Palace. On this occasion, Hereke also becomes a brand in carpet making and took its place among the regions known for the carpet we mentioned earlier.

Where to Buy Turkish Rugs in Istanbul 2024

Unfortunately, the number of people who can weave carpets is decreasing because carpet weaving requires great care and patience. Production is shifting to India and China, where the labor force is cheaper, as the cost of carpet workmanship increases day by day.

Hereke and Usak (Oushak) carpets, which are the palace carpets of the classical period, are rare and expensive. It is much easier to find Anatolian carpets, which are woven from wool, with geometric patterns, and therefore are more economical.

Most of the carpet shops in Istanbul are located in Sultanahmet. Sultanahmet is also the district with the most popular attractions such as Hagia Sophia , Topkapi Palace and the Blue Mosque .

The historical monuments in Sultanahmet are very close to each other and can be visited on foot. Historical bazaars with carpet stores are also very close to these structures.

There are many carpet shops not only inside but also around the Grand Bazaar . The answer to the question of Where to Buy Turkish Rugs in Istanbul is hidden in the streets surrounding the Grand Bazaar.

In the lines below you can find the best carpet shops I recommend. These are shops located not in the historical bazaars of Istanbul, but in the vicinity. You can find positive references in international guide books and travel sites about these places, which are the best carpet shops of Istanbul.

1. Nakkas Oriental Rugs

Nakkas Oriental Rugs has one of the largest carpet collections in Istanbul. It is located in Sultanahmet, the center of Istanbul Old City. It is within walking distance to the Hippodrome , one of the most visited historical monuments in the Sultanahmet area.

Apart from the carpet, you can also buy Iznik Tiles at Nakkas Carpet Store. Above all, you can visit Nakkas only for The Museum inside it. Restoring a 1500-year-old Byzantine cistern and transforming it into an exhibition, Nakkas has created a digital exhibition depicting the chariot races in Hippodrome.

2. Punto Carpet

If you want to shop for carpets near the Grand Bazaar, you can choose Punto Carpet . Nuruosmaniye Gate, which is the 1st gate of Grand Bazaar, opens to the courtyard of a large mosque. This Ottoman mosque called Nuruosmaniye Mosque is an imperial mosque built in the 18th century.

When you take the Grand Bazaar behind you and cross the courtyard, you will go to Nuruosmaniye Street. In this street decorated with beautiful shops and cafes, there is a coffee shop called Kahve Dunyasi (Coffee World). When you enter the street adjacent to the Kahve Dunyasi, you can find Punto Carpet in just a few steps.

Punto is a shop recommended in many international travel guides about Istanbul. You can buy wool, cotton and silk Turkish rugs in Punto, which has a very wide collection of Turkish carpets and rugs.

Where to Buy Turkish Carpets in Istanbul (Updated 2024)

2 December 2023 by Serhat Engül

You will need to make your shopping plan in Istanbul according to the object you will buy. Locals of the city know that there is a different neighborhood where each item can be purchased at an affordable price. In order to answer the question of where to buy a Turkish carpets in Istanbul , it is necessary to know certain areas.

For example, Horhor Street for antiques, Mahmutpasa Street for cheap clothing, Sirkeci for electronic items and Galata for lighting items. I shared very detailed information on these topics in a blog post titled best shopping places in Istanbul .

Foreign visitors coming to Istanbul think that bargaining is a part of everyday culture. However, bargaining is not welcomed except for the Spice Bazaar and the Grand Bazaar . Especially in the modern centers of the city, such as Beyoglu or Besiktas or Kadikoy , the price of everything is clear and bargaining is not accepted.

What to Buy in Istanbul

Where to Buy Turkish Carpets in Istanbul

The answer to the question of what to buy in Istanbul is leather, jewelry, tile and carpet. However, it should be noted that you do not have to buy these goods from bazaars close to touristic places.

It is very difficult for first-time travelers to buy something in the historical bazaars of Istanbul. In these places where shopping takes place through bargains, you can never be sure that you have found the real price of a good.

For this reason, you may buy some items from modern neighborhoods, instead of the Historic Peninsula (Old City) of Istanbul. So what products can you buy from modern shopping malls of Istanbul where prices are fixed?

1. Jewelry and Leather

Modern Shopping Malls in Istanbul

You can buy jewelery and leather from modern shopping malls or streets. Brands such as Desa, Deriden and Derimod offer very high quality leather products. These brands have a branch in each shopping mall.

Likewise, you can choose well-established brands such as Atasay, Altınbaş and Koçak Gold for jewelry. You may prefer these brands for silver and diamond shopping in Istanbul.

Gold and Jewelry in Grand Bazaar

You can consider Grand Bazaar to buy gold . Because the Grand Bazaar is traditionally the center of the Turkish gold market. For this reason, the best goldsmiths in the city and their designs are also found here.

The answer to the question of “whether the locals do shopping at the Grand Bazaar” will be yes if the subject is to buy gold. The gram price of gold is fixed and will give you an idea of pricing.

3. Turkish Rugs and Iznik Tiles

I have said that you can easily find jewelery and leather outside of Old City. However, I cannot say the same for Turkish rugs and Iznik tiles . Carpets and Tiles, which are products of traditional art, are found especially in Sultanahmet and its surroundings.

It is hard to find hand-knotted Turkish carpets and hand-painted Iznik Tiles. Because the number of people who can do this job is small and the job requires great skill. Carpet and tile workshops are located in the cities of Anatolia and have a traditional structure.

Since Istanbul is the city where carpets and tiles are sold the most, they are brought to the shops here. However, it is not an easy task to select, buy and sell these products at the right price. That’s why you need to choose the right place to buy Turkish carpets in Istanbul.

History of Turkish Rugs

In this article, I will try to give information on how to buy handmade Turkish carpets in Istanbul . However, you must have an idea of carpet art before going to the place where you will buy a carpet.

In order to find out in which region the carpets started to be woven for the first time and how they became popular around the world, I recommend you to read the article titled history of Turkish carpets .

Turkish carpets were first started to be woven in Asia. However, the character of today’s Turkish carpet emerged when the Turks settled in Anatolia.

Turkish carpet art, blending the surrounding cultures, has gained worldwide fame since the 14th century. Famous painters such as Lorenzo Lotto, Hans Holbein and Hans Memling painted their Turkish carpets in full detail.

In the lines below, I will introduce you to the best places to buy Turkish carpets in Istanbul . You can find references in many travel guides about these reputable carpet stores. You can find handmade carpets, rugs and kilims of various sizes in these famous carpet shops of Istanbul.

However, keep in mind that even locals do not have enough information about authentic Turkish rugs. In order to understand whether a carpet is original, it is necessary to be an expert.

Therefore, if you are going to shop yourself, I suggest you to be careful. You should really know what you are looking for in order not to be disappointed. Going to a reliable shop will at least ensure you get decent service.

1. Nakkas Oriental Rugs

Nakkas Oriental Rugs stands out among the best carpet shops in Istanbul with its collection of thousands of carpets. The shop, which consists of several floors, has an incredible collection of carpets and rugs.

Nakkas Rug is located very close to Hippodrome, a Roman era structure in Istanbul. In the 1500-year-old cistern below the shop, there is a museum about the chariot races held in the Hippodrome of Constantinople during the Roman and Byzantine periods.

2. Punto Carpet

Punto Carpet is located on Nuruosmaniye Street, which is a shopping street very close to the Grand Bazaar. Punto has become one of the most popular carpet shops in Istanbul in the last two decades.

Punto Carpet has a very large collection of carpets and rugs and is one of the carpet stores in Istanbul with the highest customer satisfaction rate. You can find the shop in the back street of Kahve Dunyasi, a local coffee chain.

3. Sisko Osman

So far, we have talked about carpet shops outside the Grand Bazaar. When it comes to the carpet shops in the historical bazaar, Sisko Osman should be placed first.

Sisko Osman has been known as the carpet shop of celebrities in the Grand Bazaar for decades. Many famous names of the Western world, especially Hollywood stars, shopped here.

The shop was identified with its owner, Osman. The mission of Osman, who became famous as an expert carpet seller in the 80s and 90s, is now being carried on by the next generation.

You can find this carpet shop named Sisko Osman in Zincirli Han, located in the northeastern part of the Grand Bazaar. The shop is located in a small courtyard accessible from the bazaar.

4. Sengor Halı

Sengor Halı is a carpet shop with roots going back a century and has been specializing in the business for four generations. For this reason, it is known as one of the oldest carpet shops in the Grand Bazaar.

Sengor Halı is located on Takkeciler Sokak, a wide street in the middle of the Grand Bazaar. The current owner of Sengor is “Semsettin Sengor” in his 90’s. He has a vast knowledge and experience as he has been trained in this business since his childhood.

Although Sengor is not a very eye-catching shop at first glance, it has a large collection of carpets and rugs. You can find many types of carpets here as well as listen to their stories.

5. Dhoku Rugs

With its modern style, Dhoku Rugs differs a little from the carpet makers I’ve recommended so far. At Dhoku Rugs , you can find carpets that blend traditional carpet art with modern decoration.

Dhoku’s rugs mostly feature geometric patterns and go well with modern designer furniture. I think people who like contemporary art will like Dhoku’s carpets more. You can find Dhoku on Takkeciler Street just like the previous Sengor.

I am going to Istanbul in October. Do any carpet shops well small (3×5) rugs that are patchwork rugs made from old rugs? I need one that is more green and gold that the dark-colored rugs.

25 August 2023 at 21:13

Hello Carol, I think you can find patchwork style relatively modern carpets from stores like Dhoku, which I suggested in the article.

I don’t think most of the rugs sold as patchwork were actually put together from old rugs. I suggest you be careful about this.

Hello, We will be returning to Istanbul for one day on Oct 17 2023 on our way back to the US. May I send you a photograph of the type of rug and size we are interested in purchasing? It has been difficult and I don’t want to waste our time nor anyone else’s time who may not have what we are looking for. Do you think you would be able to point us in the correct direction?

11 October 2023 at 12:14

Dear Ellie Krumholz, I do not have up-to-date information about the models and sizes of carpets in stores. For this reason, it is not possible for me to provide such specific information.

Turkish Carpet Shops in Istanbul

Last Updated on May 6, 2024

The carpet business in Turkey  deserves to be termed  Byzantine  these days, what with carpets made in other countries—China, Bangladesh, India—of synthetic fibers and industrial dyes being sold as "authentic Turkish carpets."

Navigating a carpet purchase  can be as complicated as  getting married , and the outcome as uncertain.

Because there are so many uncertainties in the Turkish carpet business, and because I can't be sure how a purchase will proceed—or end— I can only recommend particular shops or dealers.

I suggest general principles  for the shopper to follow when considering the purchase of a Turkish carpet, and  what's it like to visit a Turkish carpet shop .  More...

Recommended Carpet Shops

Punto carpets.

For over a decade we have seen Punto offering a wide range of high quality, authentic, hand-made rugs as new, antique, and vintage. You will find fine rugs from timeless classics to exotic contemporary in special collections as well. Their antique Turkish and Persian rugs collection has been gathered with the expertise of literally generations. Also the pure silk rugs are woven on the masters-looms of the famous Ozipek and Cinar families and considered to be their signature collection.

EthniCon Carpets

EthniCon is a 3rd generation carpet shop that has been in the Grand Bazaar for 45 years. All carpets are hand made and they have a very broad selection of both ethnic and contemporary carpets.

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT TURKISH CARPET FACTORY TOURS

  • Travel Guides
  • September 5, 2023 August 2, 2023
  • by wini.henson

Turkey is renowned for its exquisite handmade carpets, and visiting a Turkish carpet factory can be a fascinating and educational experience.

We visited the Bazaar 54 Carpet Factory in Anatolia and it was an incredible experience. Seeing the intricate details that these talented craftswomen weave into these rugs in unlike anything we’d ever seen before! Here’s what you need to know:

carpet store tour

WHERE TO GO

Turkey is a large country with many carpet-producing regions, but some of the most famous ones include Cappadocia, Ephesus, and Pamukkale. If you’re interested in buying a Turkish Carpet, do some research before arriving in Turkey to find reputable carpet factories known for producing high-quality, authentic Turkish carpets.

Choose a location that fits your travel itinerary, and check if there are any carpet factories or showrooms nearby.

GUIDED TOURS

Some carpet factories offer guided tours of their facilities, where you can learn about the intricate process of carpet making. These tours can be enlightening, providing insights into the artistry and craftsmanship behind each carpet.

We took a guided tour of the Bazaar 54 Carpet Factory in Anatolia, and learned so much!

INTRO TO CARPET MAKING

Upon arriving at the carpet factory, we were greeted by a guide who took us on a guided tour of the premises.

Our guide introduced the carpet weaving process. We learned about the materials used in different carpets, such as wool, silk, and cotton. In Turkey, the material most commonly used is sheep’s wool because the Anatolian plateaus are excellent grazing land for sheep and good grazing land determines the sheen and strength of the wool.

We also got to see the difference between hand woven carpets and machine made carpets. As he walked us through the factory, he introduced us to different techniques used to create the beautiful pieces. We also got to witness the skilled artisans at work, creating carpets using traditional techniques.

DESIGNS AND MOTIFS

Our guide explained the significance of different carpet designs and patterns. Turkish carpets often incorporate intricate motifs and symbols, each with its own cultural and historical background.

Some of the most popular motifs in Turkish carpets include:

Yıldız (The Star) : The star motif, though it generally symbolises happiness, can represent the womb, and it may represent fertility as well.

carpet store tour

Nazar (The Evil Eye) : The weavers have always believed some people possess a power in their glance which can cause harm, injury, misfortune, and even death. At immediate risk are babies, pets, important objects in the home, and property. The Muska is a triangular package containing a sacred verse carried by the tribal people for protection. When woven into a rug, it serves as an amulet, conferring protection by its presence.

Tree of Life: The tree of life motif symbolizes the desire for immortality. It can also mean the afterlife. This motif is the worldwide symbol of life rising up to heaven and it encompasses both earth and heaven.

THE SHOW ROOM

At the end of the tour, we were taken to the showroom and provided complimentary tea, coffee, red wine or white wine. The salesmen displayed a wide array of carpets ranging in size, colour, price, and material. The salesmen were incredibly knowledgable and helpful, so if you provide them a budget and a size that you’re looking for, they will provide many options for you to look through!

BUYING A CARPET & QUALITY CONTROL

If you’re interested in purchasing a Turkish carpet, the staff will explain the different features of the carpets and help you find one that suits your preferences and budget.

carpet store tour

Authentic Turkish carpets are renowned for their exceptional craftsmanship, unique designs, and high-quality materials. However, due to their popularity and demand, there can be varying levels of authenticity and quality in the market. Some factors to consider when assessing the authenticity and quality of Turkish carpets include:

Origin : Authentic Turkish carpets are handwoven in Turkey, particularly in regions with a rich history of carpet making, such as Anatolia. Look for carpets labeled as “Turkish” or specifying the region where they were made.

carpet store tour

Materials : Traditional Turkish carpets are made from natural fibres like wool, silk, or a combination of both. High-quality carpets use locally sourced, natural materials that are carefully selected for durability and beauty.

Handmade vs. Machine-made : Authentic Turkish carpets are handwoven using traditional techniques passed down through generations. Machine-made carpets, on the other hand, are mass-produced and lack the craftsmanship and uniqueness of handmade pieces.

carpet store tour

Knot Density : Knot density refers to the number of knots per square inch. Higher knot density generally indicates a finer and more intricate carpet, which often correlates with better quality and craftsmanship.

Bazaar 54 Carpet Factory, Carpet Weaving, Turkey Tour

Design and Motifs : Authentic Turkish carpets feature traditional motifs and designs that hold cultural and historical significance. Look for intricate and well-executed patterns, which are a hallmark of genuine Turkish carpets.

carpet store tour

Labelling and Certification : Look for reputable sellers who provide information about the carpet’s origin, materials, and production process. Some carpets may come with certificates of authenticity or quality to verify their genuineness.

If you decide to buy one, keep in mind that bargaining is common in Turkish culture, especially in markets and carpet shops. Feel free to negotiate the price with the salesmen, and try to get them to throw in concessions such as free shipping or bigger discounts.

GETTING YOUR CARPET HOME

If you plan to buy a large carpet or multiple pieces, many factories can provide international shipping options back to your home country to ensure your purchase reaches your home safely. Depending on the size of your carpet, the factory could also provide you a free suitcase to help you transport your new purchase home.

Visting the Bazaar 54 Carpet Factory was one of the highlights of our trip through Anatolia. Seeing the intricate patterns and craftsmanship required to make these beautiful carpets was such an amazing experience. My family even ended up purchasing one of the Turkish carpets for our home! If you’re in Turkey, visiting a carpet making factory is a must see.

Carpet Factory Surprise

We were a group of 7 from our cruise ship, and were delighted with OTTI. Every aspect of our Ephesus & Kirazli Village Tour was well thought out by guide Banu. The van was cool and comfortable; her pace was just right; and we glad to have included the addition of Terrace Houses at impressive Ephesus. (Banu did mention that my skirt was inappropriate, as parts of the Terrace Houses tour permitted looking down onto houses in which workers were sometimes still excavating. I didn't see anyone but I do wish I had known in advance!) The somewhat dreaded Carpet Factory lunch and demonstration was fantastic! We opted for the regular lunch; all members of the group enjoyed it and the demo was extremely thorough and very entertaining. Best of all, Gizem Gencer responded online to all of my questions prior to the tour. We were completely satisfied with our arrangements.

We had a great tour of Ephesus. Our guide was knowledgable, kind, and friendly. The driver was conscientious and safe. The coach was new and sparkling clean. The sites are sufficiently complex that we learned many things we could never have learned on our own. The price was fair and the Ottoman lunch in the olive garden restaurant was one of the highlights of our trip. I strongly recommend this tour.

We were very impressed with our tour. Our tour guide, Banu Akin's knowledge of Ephesus was truly remarkable. We appreciated that the tour package was all inclusive. The lunch we consumed was not only plentiful but every dish was delicious. Anyone contemplating visiting Ephesus should make contracting for a tour with Ottis Travel a priority!

I booked this tour with Otti Travel and we had Erman as our tour guide. The booking was easy with a very prompt reply although a follow up email to ask a question got no reply (so be sure you ask everything up front). Erman was a terrific guide--28 yr old graduated University and post grad study in England. His English was perfect and he answered many questions for us as well as explaining the history of the sites we visited. He was waiting for us with a sign with our name as we disembarked the cruise ship.. Lunch was really good with local food and a lovely setting. We also enjoyed the low key rug tour and opted out of the possible leather tour (too tired) which would have also been interesting. The tour was much less expensive than the ship option and with only two people, much more meaningful. Erman was able to run a credit card for the balance due for the tour. I would highly recommend this tour.

My friend and I were on the Norwegian Jade and opted to book our own tour with OTTI Travel. I had sustained a foot injury in Santorini and was sporting a lovely cast on my right foot. I was concerned about being able to walk on the tour, but there was no need to worry. We were met at the ship by our knowledgeable guide, driver, and comfortable car. We went to Ephesus, a carpet factory co-op, and then on to a fabulous lunch in the countryside. Our lovely guide, assisted me with the smooth marble steps and rocky pathway in Ephesus and I was able to see everything. We ended up having one of the best days of our 14-day trip. I would highly recommend seeing Ephesus and booking with OTTI Travel. They provide excellent ship-to-ship service.

We opted for this tour company to see Ephesus during our trip to Turkey because they seemed to be the most flexible in working with our schedule and were still very affordable. All their reviews were really high which made the determining factor. While I was hesitant to choose a tour company for fear of not getting what was advertised, I'm glad I chose this company because the trip through OTTI Travel exceeded our expectations. They booked everything for us, including a plane ticket from Istanbul to Izmir so it was a really easy process. They were flexible and helpful with everything we needed. The tour guide was waiting for us after we exited the terminal so we didn't have to search for the van. My wife and I were the only people on the tour and they really personalized it to us. It was great to have such a personalized tour of this area. Also, the van was very clean and comfortable. The driver was very safe as well, i did not worry at all during our ride out or back. Our tour guide, Banu, was great. She was super friendly and very knowledgeable. She taught us so much about not just the sites but the history, geography, and culture of the area. She really made everything come alive; I would highly recommend her as a guide if she is available. The trip itself was great; the weather was amazing and it was not crowded at any site we went to. I highly recommend seeing the terrace houses; it is well worth the extra money and time. Definitely check out the Basilica of St John and the Temple of Artemis if you have time; it was really interesting to see the two together even though the ruins are not as detailed as Ephesus. We also decided to go to the co-op to see the rug making and eat lunch. We did not opt for the upgraded lunch but found the standard lunch to be very good and satisfying. Yes, they want you to buy rugs but we did not feel highly pressured and enjoyed the ability to see so many different rugs. The tour was really flexible with going to additional places or not; they could have taken us to a leather factory as well which we opted not to do. I would highly recommend using this tour company and we definitely plan to use them again the next time we visit the area.
