UB40 are a reggae and pop band from Birmingham, UK, formed in 1978. They have sold in excess of 70 million records.

Over the course of a career that’s now lasted for well over thirty years, UB40 have made a name for themselves as one of the most successful reggae acts in history. They’ve been successful the world over, but are probably best loved in their native United Kingdom, where they’ve had no fewer than fifty singles make the singles chart. In the U.S., meanwhile, they’ve had two huge number one successes, including “Red Red Wine” - probably their signature song - and their take on Elvis Presley’s classic “Can’t Help Falling in Love”.

It’s difficult to speak too clearly about the current lineup of the group, not least because it’s subject to legal proceedings; there’s now both a UB40 and a ‘UB40 Reunited’, with the latter band boasting original singer Ali Campbell, long-time trumpeter Astro and keyboardist Mickey Virtue. At the heart of the conflict is a spat between Campbell and his brother Duncan, who remains in the original UB40 - who, confusingly, are also still a going concern. Either way, it shouldn’t be allowed to overshadow an impressive legacy, the most important part of which is likely the example that UB40 set, with their diverse ethnic background, for other multi-cultural musical outfits in the UK.

Live reviews

UB40 is ALWAYS a treat for the senses live. Their sound is larger than life. How could it be anything less? With Veteran member Robin Campbell on rhythm and lead guitar who also sings with the deeper, melodic voice. Duncan Campbell giving the lead vocals all he's got, throw in some subtle smiles and a whole lot of sophisticated charm as well. Earl Falconer on bass, making a center stage appearance for a few songs of his own, including, Bulldozer, a fantastic new one from the current album "For The Many". Martin Meredith on saxophone playing straight to your soul, Lawrence Perry dazzling on trumpet, and humbly standing in for The one and only Brian Travers was Ian who really carried the music quite well and is an absolute gentleman. Norman Hassan gives you voice, percussion, character and some very fancy dance moves! Tony Mullings on keyboards lays down a very complicated array of sounds that infiltrate the music and make it what it is, he adds so much to the richness of their brand of Reggae. Jimmy Brown sets the tempo on the drums and gives this fine group of genuine, talented, musicians a wild ride to lay down all of their musical contributions to and float you away on rythm, melody, beat, love songs, politics, thought provoking, smile producing MUSIC! This is a band that if you are fortunate enough to have the opportunity to see live, and you miss it, you missed more than you will ever realize. They are so good to their true and loyal fans, both on stage and off. There's obvious reason why this is 40th anniversary tour, 40 years of material, all authentic (even the covers!) all genuine, all solid, and inspirational. UB40 is the finest entertainment I've ever had the privilege to experience. Go. See. Them.

UB40 is a British reggae/pop band that has been in the industry for over thirty years. Although their membership has changed over the years, they are still touring and entertaining fans around the world. They generally perform in large venues and outdoor festivals.

The entertainment is based on the music and vocals rather than special effects and dance routines. Their opening act is usually a DJ playing classic reggae songs to get the audience dancing and in the mood.

Their current lead singer Duncan Campbell brings a deeper, more soulful tone to the lyrics. UB40 is well-known for its covers as well as its original music. UB40 in concert plays all the old favorites and covers as well as their newer music. They have the sort of show that draws the audience in so that they are dancing and singing along with every song. The audience tends to be a little older these days, but after 15 minutes of singing and dancing, the years seem to melt away for the evening.

UB40 plays for two solid hours. The show is short on the stories and preaching and long on the singing and music. The band is not out there to promote some message or view but to help the audience have a great time. They usually back-load the second half of the show with classics to leave everyone with a good feeling at the end.

British reggae/pop band UB40 now hold an iconic status due to the timeless quality of their music which achieved huge commercial success in the UK during the 80s and 90s. Still touring to date to both the original fans and new converts who enjoy the band's music.

Perhaps looking for an alternative to the grey skies of Birmingham, the group developed a sun drenched sound inspired by the reggae greats including Bob Marley as well as their multi-cultural surrounding which exposed them to a huge variety of music. The influences remain present throughout their discography and now their live show continues to include soulful backing vocalists and a variety of reggae instruments.

The band enjoyed a huge amount of hits during their peak so filtering these into a succinct live show is a feat however they make great decisions with 'Cherry Oh Baby' and 'How Can a Poor Man Stand Such Times and Live?' which both receive big cheers. There is no inclusion of their #1 cover and collaboration with Chrissie Hynde 'I Got You Babe' tonight but this is compensated with a huge singalong to 'Red, Red Wine'. A classic act with a timeless discography of hits.

This was a first time too see them in concert. It was their 40 year anniversary and clearly, they were past their heyday and prime. They did great on doing their big hits like Red Wine or Falling in Love. But at times it felt a bit mechanical, they are great professional but improvisational part was lacking. The singers are good, but a bit out of shape. My wife felt some were not sexy or lacked charisma. They could use some female singers in the mix. The DJ before the main show was O.K. but not great. The waiting time for them to come onstage was 2 hours which is too long for standing room only. Overall, good experience but not great.

Beyond separation of band members and Campbell brothers, you can expect the very best of the new / old UB40 crew : amazing sound close to the one of the studios, amazing similar and tainted voices and this perfect matching of melodies, emotions and instrumental performances which made their worldwide success. Listening to UB40 is like an out of time moment and takes you to a real soul-searching.Everything looks like obvious, smooth and easy-going when you listen to the music these incredible artists just perform in a perfect way because absolutely theirs. To be shared limitless !

Totally agree with this review .. myself & 5 others were totally gutted, after having seen UB40 on tour B4 .. we have always been entertained from start to finish .. The supporting Dj was rubbish (im sure many will agree) in comparison to likes of Maxi Priest.. I felt we had been miss lead in to thinking I was seeing UB40 , Yo find the lead singer out of tune .. Good Try ... but will never pay or recommend ... As was said by a Ex Fan of yours ... It was like Culture Club without Boy George .... UB40 is not UB40 with out Ali Cambell ... What more can be said xx Rant Over

UB40 were fantastic! Got tickets for my stepdads early Xmas present and he is one of their biggest fans. We waited over an hour outside as they were late finishing a meet and greet I heard, but we got standing views right near the front! The stage was great and the lighting and sound awesome for the venue, not to mentioned UB40 being awesome! Only downfall which no one else can help is two lots of two women getting too drunk and ruining it for everyone, one being sick all over the floor and the others trying to start a fight. Overall brill night.

Ub40 announces ub45 national us tour.

Posted by Buddy Iahn | Apr 11, 2023

Trek celebrates 45 years of the band’s iconic pop-reggae sound

In celebration of four-time Grammy nominated UB40’s 45th anniversary, the band announces their upcoming UB45 US summer tour, kicking off on Independence Day in Camden, New Jersey. The legendary reggae-pop band will bring fans special live performances of their worldwide hit singles to the stage with “Red Red Wine,” “Food For Thought,” “(I Can’t Help) Falling In Love With You,” and many more. UB40 will also be releasing a new album this summer titled UB45 , with new songs and reworked classics. Tour support includes Maxi Priest, Inner Circle, Third World and Big Mountain.

With additional dates being added, the national tour will include stops coast-to-coast in Westbury, New York at The Space on July 6th and in Los Angeles at the Microsoft Theater on July 21st with additional stops in Boston, Nashville, Seattle, Portland, Las Vegas, and more.

“We love playing the US, and celebrating our 45th year and having a new album makes our return even more exciting,” shares guitarist/vocalist Robin Campbell.

“Touring the States last year was an absolute dream come true for me, and now I just can’t wait to get back out there,” adds vocalist Matt Doyle. “Most of all I can’t wait for the U.S fans to hear some of our new tunes! I think they’re going to love UB45!”

With more than 100 million albums sold worldwide, UB40 is an English reggae and pop multi-cultural band originally formed in Birmingham, England. With more than 50 singles in the UK Singles Chart, the group has been established since 1978.

Doyle joined the band in 2021, taking over for a retired Duncan Campbell after Doyle’s group, KIOKO, opened for UB40 at The Royal Albert Hall in 2018 — and then supported them on UB40’s subsequent UK tour and European tours. Doyle’s lead vocals are featured on the track “You Don’t Call Anymore” from from UB40’s collaboration album Bigga Baggariddim , released in 2021; and last summer’s “ Champion ,” the first single from the forthcoming UB45 album and official song of the 2022 Commonwealth Games, which also featured Gilly G and Dapz on the Map, two emcees also from Birmingham.

UB40 Live Featuring Ali Campbell

We are UB40 featuring Ali Campbell, t he founding member and lead singer of UB40. Ali left the original band in 2008 citing management issues and was vindicated when said managers were struck off. Ali was then reunited with Astro when he left the original band in 2013. Ali and Astro took the world by storm, captivating audiences everywhere they went, releasing three new albums together reaching number 2 in the UK charts. Heartbreakingly, Astro passed away after a very short illness in November 2021 after they’d finished their incredible fourth album – Unprecedented.

It has continually come to our attention that Ali’s former band members and their current management are hell-bent on trying to stop  UB40 Featuring Ali Campbell  from performing shows globally including Ali’s forthcoming show in UGANDA.

Ali Campbell celebrates the band being inducted into the Music Walk of Fame with an intimate show at London’s Koko. The ceremony will see the unveiling of a stone on the Walk of Fame on Camden High Street.

Next week also marks 40 years since the release of UB40’s seminal album ‘Labour of Love’ on 12th September 1983, which produced the groundbreaking hits that will be performed on this tour such as ‘Cherry Oh Baby’, ‘Many Rivers to Cross’, ‘Please Don’t Make Me Cry’, and of course the ubiquitous ‘Red Red Wine’ which topped the charts both sides of the Atlantic.

Further hits from across the band’s career such as ‘Kingston Town’, a cover of ‘I Got You Babe’ with Chrissie Hynde, and ‘(I Can’t Help) Falling In Love With You’ helped the band and Ali Campbell become the authentic voice of UK Reggae, with a total of 70 million records sold, as they took their smooth yet rootsy musical blend to all corners of the globe.

Joining UB40 featuring Ali Campbell for the tour will be very special guest, Bitty McLean. Bitty emerged in the 1990’s, and appeared on UB40’s 1993 album ‘Promise and Lies’. Moseley is where we started and spent our first formative years, so it will be a true homecoming and could get emotional Robin
Moseley was always very Bohemian. Eccentric, arty, with some great pubs. A few of us would hang out at the Fighting Cocks, one of our first gigs was in the upstairs room there. We once played on the back of a lorry driving up and down Moseley Road. It was the birthplace of the band. Jimmy

Soul II Soul

Formed in 1988 Soul II Soul and Jazzie B quickly achieved a name in their community in North London. Soul II Soul’s dances had been reflecting what was occurring naturally in London; kids of all races had grown up together and were now raving together. By the mid – 1980s the warehouse scene was in full swing, vibrant and underground, removed from the constraints of the mainstream – a natural fit for Soul II Soul’s creativity.

Nothing summed them and their crowd up better than their regular Sunday night spot at the now legendary Africa Centre in London’s Covent Garden. The Africa Centre was a game changer for Soul II Soul; for British black music; and for the nation’s youth culture in general. It caught the attention of Virgin Records, who signed them as an act in 1988, catapulting them into a tornado of success. There were the resident club nights all over the world; live concert tours; radio and TV appearances; Jazzie had his own show on London’s Kiss FM and there was even an Adventures of the Funki Dreds co mic book. And, of course, Soul II Soul enjoyed the type of chart success – notably with ‘Keep On Movin’ and ‘Back To Life’ – that made them household names all over the world. To date Soul II Soul has sold over 10 million albums in over 35 territories worldwide and has produced over 200 compilation CDs while Jazzie has accreditation on over 35 million albums in over 100 territories. They’ve performed in over 20 countries, and appeared at some of the most famous venues in the world including Wembley and New York’s Universal Amphitheatre. America embraced Soul II Soul to such a degree, in 1990 they picked up two Grammy’s. Jazzie was given the keys to seven cities in the US, including LA and New York, and the NAACP has honoured him. There’s even a Soul II Soul day over there.

Don Letts’ reputation has been firmly established in both the film and music world by a substantial body of work from the late 70’s through the 80’s, 90’s and well into the millennium. His work has been exhibited in The Kitchen N.Y.C, The Institute of Contemporary Art, The N.F.T in London and was honored at Brooklyn’s BAM festival and The Milan Film festival. In March 2003 he won a Grammy for his documentary ‘Westway To The World’.

He came to notoriety in the late 70’s as the DJ that single handedly turn ed a whole generation of punks onto reggae. It was whilst as a d.j at the first punk club ‘The Roxy’ in 1977, that Don adopted the punk D.I.Y ethic and begun to make his first film ‘The Punk Rock Movie’. Shot on Super – 8mm it is the only documentary on the U.K punk scene w/ Sex Pistols – The Clash and many others. This led to a period directing over 300 music videos for an eclectic mix of diverse artists ranging from Public Image to Bob Marley. He then moved into documentary work covering the likes of Gil Scot – Heron, The Jam, Sun Ra, George Clinton and most recently Paul McCartney. Dancehall Queen (co – directed by Rick Elgood) shot in location in Jamaica 1997 was his first feature film. At the end of 2007 Don presented ‘Speakers Corner’ in conjunction with the British Arts council. Featuring several spoken word artists, poets and rappers with a musical band in a theatrical setting. The event toured the UK in November – December and was a contemporary response to the 200th anniversary of the abolition of the Britis h slave trade.

Freetown Collective

“Freetown Collective is known for producing a sound that is riveting, relevant and authentic. As part of a wave of new calypso artists emerging from the Caribbean, the six – piece dynamic musical ensemble distinguishes itself through a unique blend of Caribbean rhythms and urban pop music.

The band has steadily grown its global reach within the last few years. After a brief international tour in 2015 that saw them grace stages in Rotterdam, Edinburgh, London and Toronto, their track “Good Swimma” was remixed and renamed “Believer” by Major Lazer and Showtek and released in 2016. The following year, “Believer” received Gold Certification in France and exceeded 40 million views on YouTube. Another collaboration with Showtek saw the release of “Amen”. Freetown Collective released its debut album entitled “Born in Darkness” in 2018 amidst overwhelmingly critical acclaim. The band’s single with renowned DJ Private Ryan entitled “Feel The Love” occupied the #2 spot on Apple Music’s Top 100 songs (in Trinidad and Tobago) list for 6 weeks in February and March 2020. In 2022, the band released “World on Fire” with soca superstars DJ Private Ryan and Patrice Roberts.”

With many exciting studio projects in the pipeline and a heap of festivals behind them, including repeated performances at Boomtown Fair, Shambala Festival, One Love, Reggae Garden amongst others in the UK, and further afield with shows at Sirenfest (Turkey), Friendly Fire Band is currently taking bookings fronted by TOMLIN MYSTIC , MYKI TUFF , OWANCEMUS (AKA Lukas Daley) The latest hit “It’s a Brum Ting” became the anthem for the Common Wealth Games 2022, following up their lockdown classic with Myki Tuff, “I WIll Survive Corona” , which enjoyed a worldwide success with its viral video. Other releases include the Saturday Night riddim album, that re – invents the Pressure and Slide riddim, the Skandal Riddim showing the versatility of the band with its upbeat Ska – inspired rhythm, contrasting with the one drop of the Natty Love riddim and the heavy roots vibe of the Run Away 12 ′′ or the “ Legalize Riddim ” which has found its way on artist mixtapes from Chile to France and Martinique. “The band was incredible…[they] made it all sound effortless. Isn’t that the secret of great music ! sounded like it was just falling off the stage.. beautiful tight riddims, the crowd was totally in – vested in the notes [they] were playing” Brian Travers, UB40 “It’s almost like the real thing when you go to Jamaica and play with Sly and Robbie: for the UK…. it’s excellent!” Dawn Penn

Starting from the very beginning, Moseley has been a big part of UB40’s rise and it holds a special place in their hearts. From first attending the Moseley School of Arts, practising above the local butchers (David Cox Butchers) just over the road from Moseley Park, to even recording their legendary album ‘Signing Off’ at Highbury Studios. Let’s also not forget, their first-ever gig was booked by a local fan, to celebrate their 30th Birthday, at the Hare & Hounds in 1979. A recognised historic milestone, the Hare & Hounds houses a PRS plaque on the York Rd side of the building, to commemorate it.

The Campbell brothers (Robin, Duncan and original lead singer Ali) were influenced heavily by their multicultural hometown, especially, the music brought by the major swell of Jamaican immigrants brought to Birmingham in the late 60s and 70s and the breadth of Indian film music, including Bhangra and pop/Bollywood scores. The music they created – featuring insightful sociopolitical lyrics, tight reggae rhythms, dubby instrumental passages, sax solos and Jamaican scat vibes – became a quick favourite of a young, mainly student crowd. Their music offered more depth than that of the many punk and ska and reggae-influenced bands of the time.

ub40 tour support

Aside from their ability to capture the Zeitgeist of the era they launched in, one of the keys to breaking UB40 to mainstream success was their association with Chrissie Hynde, who saw them perform at a small venue and invited them on a six-week tour with her fast-rising band The Pretenders just before the release of UB40’s double-sided debut single “King/Food For Thought.” The exposure helped lift the track to #4 on the UK singles chart. By the time they finished the Pretenders tour, UB40 was selling out as headliners of the same venues.

The band went on to have hits like, “One in Ten”, “I Got You Babe”, “If It Happens Again,” “Don’t Break My Heart,” “Sing Our Own Song” and “Rat in Mi Kitchen,” and “Higher Ground” to “Red Red Wine”, which they filmed the music video and hung out in the Eagle and Tun, just walking distance from their recording studio and record label Dep International in Digbeth.

Still touring to this day, guitarist/vocalist and UB40 co-founder Robin Campbell, who along with Jimmy Brown (drums), Earl Falconer (bass, vocals) and Norman Hassan (percussion, trombone, vocals) have been the core of the band for its entire ever-evolving history. Now with 39 Top 40 hits, 17 top tens, three No 1 singles, two No 1 albums, and even more new music on the way, Moseley Park will provide the perfect setting to celebrate the career of one of the UK’s most iconic and successful artists.

About the Park

Held in Moseley Park, a stunning 11-acre woodland glade in the heart of Moseley Village. Although it’s just 2 miles from the centre of Birmingham it is a world away from city life. It is the perfect setting for an outdoor music event, with sloping grounds, creating a natural amphitheatre in front of a stunning lake. The Park is adjacent to the Village. Therefore convenience shops, newsagents, restaurants and pubs are all nearby.

Red Red Wine Tour

Event details.

UB40, the iconic reggae band, celebrates its 40th anniversary with a 2018 US tour and the release of their first album in over four years. Featuring hits like ‘Kingston Town’ and ‘Red, Red Wine’, the tour showcases their enduring popularity and musical legacy. Comprising five founding members and long-time additions, UB40's concert follows the release of their latest studio album due in May 2018, marking a significant milestone in their illustrious career.

Originating from humble beginnings in Birmingham, UB40 emerged from the local music scene with a distinctive blend of reggae and social commentary. Their early years were marked by a commitment to left-wing ideals and a unique sound that resonated with audiences worldwide. Through albums like "Signing Off" and "Present Arms," they established themselves as pioneers of British reggae, earning acclaim for their authenticity and political relevance.

Over the decades, UB40's influence has grown, with chart-topping albums, global tours, and collaborations with renowned artists. Their dedication to both music and activism remains unwavering, evident in hits like “One In Ten” and “Red Red Wine,” which have become anthems of social change. As they continue to captivate audiences across the globe, UB40's legacy as one of the world's most successful reggae bands endures, transcending boundaries of race, age, and nationality.

The Who announce 2023 orchestral tour – with UB40 at regional shows

The nine-date run of shows is The Who's first tour for six years

The Who

The Who have announced a 2023 UK tour where they will be accompanied by an orchestra on each date.

  • READ MORE: Roger Daltrey tells us about plans to stream unseen TCT gigs from The Cure, Muse, Pulp and more

The tour is the ’60s legends’ first tour for six years and will kick off on July 6 in Hull, after which they will play a mixture of indoor and outdoor shows across the country before signing off in Brighton on July 23. The nine-date run of shows will see the band return to Edinburgh for the first time in over 40 years, while they will also perform in Derby for the first time since 1966.

Sections of the show will be devoted to the group’s classic albums ‘Tommy’ and ‘Quadrophenia’, while they will also be playing songs from their most recent album, 2019’s ‘WHO’, which was their first studio album for 13 years.

UB40 featuring Ali Campbell will be joining them on all shows apart from Edinburgh and London.

The Who

“Having not toured the UK for six years, it’s great that at this time of our careers we have the chance to go to places that are not on the usual touring map – Edinburgh Castle and Derby, as well as the other cities across the country that we haven’t been to for decades, will make this very special for me,” said singer Roger Daltrey. “This opportunity will give our UK Who fans the chance to hear our current show, which, with the addition of an orchestra, takes our music to new heights.”

Pete Townshend added: “Roger initially christened this tour with an orchestra ‘Moving On!’ I love it. It is what both of us want to do. Move on, with new music, classic Who music, all performed in new and exciting ways. Taking risks, nothing to lose. I’m really looking forward to bringing this show to the UK.”
