5 Days Gorillas & Chimps Safari

We stayed in the moderate level accommodations and they were absolutely wonderful. They were clean, safe, and had wonderful views, luxurious amenities, friendly staff, and bountiful food. Our host Peter was amazing. During the booking process, communication with him was prompt and clear. As our guide on the tour, he was extremely friendly, knowledgeable, well-connected, and resourceful. He successfully coordinated a busy itinerary and ensured we had a great time. Be prepared for the possibility of a few long drives if you plan to see a lot of the country- Uganda is large. Some of the roads can be bumpy, but they allow you to access so many hard-to-reach places. We saw so much of the country traveling between points. We saw all kinds of wildlife on our drives— every animal we had hoped to see. It was truly an amazing experience and a great snapshot of Uganda.

8 Days Primates, Wildlife and Water Rafting Uganda Safari (Private tour)

Our family travelled in Uganda with Mukisa Safaris for 6 days. We had limited time and wanted to fit in as much as we could. Richard catered to all of our wishes, and more. We did a a day safari where we saw 4 of the Big Five at very close quarters. We did Gorilla tracking, chimpanzee tracking, an afternoon in a traditional village, leaning so much from the inhabitants and having such fun with them. Lastly we did a city tour in Kampala. In all, I cannot praise Richard enough, he was so patient and diligent when we were planning the holiday. He answered every email promptly and with all the information that we required. He even catered for a fourth member of our family being added after it had all been booked. I cannot leave this review without mentioning our guide, Allen and our driver. Solomon. They went over and above to make sure that we got the most out of every experience. They were great fun and, by the time we left I felt that they had blended into our family group as one of us. We all felt very sad to be leaving them. In a nutshell, I cannot recommend this company enough.

My wife and I booked a 16 days (Mid-Range) safari with Paradise Adventure Vacations, and we had a great time on these days. The accommodations were in great locations, and everything went according to plan. The price was the best price we got from 50 (!!) different tour companies (and we had a full board every day). Our driver, Robert Max, made sure that everything will go on the best side, and even more. He was just wonderful; he was our driver, our friend, our guide, our photographer, our everything we needed! We can't be more grateful for all that he has done for us! (I can keep writing about him but I don't think you want 4 pages why he IS the best driver). We really enjoyed Uganda; I guess it is The Pearl of Africa. 7 Days Special Primate Tour

Responsive, informative and PROFESSIONAL. Lakato Safaris were unbelievable in every aspect it could not have been a better experience. Prior to arriving in Uganda I was constantly updated and all questions answered quickly. Mohammad was our driver/guide and he was incredible, he was immaculately presented, non intrusive, polite, friendly and with a soft kind nature. We arrived into Entebbe to find that our checked luggage had been lost and Lakato Safaris without prompting followed up with our airline regarding our lost luggage, this was extremely helpful as we didn’t have a Ugandan Sim card thus could not contact the airline without expensive mobile roaming charges, also with Lakato safaris doing to communicating it freed us up to enjoy Kampala/Entebbe for a couple of days. As we didn't have our luggage Lakato gave us clothes to wear (2x Polo shirts, a long sleeved button up, long pants with legs that zip off to make short and a hat) all for free. Lakato also notified us before that our luggage had arrived (before the airline) and organized to have it delivered immediately. Another example of the first class treatment we received was when one of us (75years old) tripped over and badly grazed/cut up both hands and both knees, without prompting and using initiative we were taken on a slight detour to a local hospital to get the wounds disinfected and hygienically patched before continuing onto our next destination. We felt safe and looked after at all times WOW would recommend to everyone.

Uganda Safari in May – What to expect on Safari in Uganda – With Gorilla & Chimpanzee permits

Uganda safari in May – May is another rainy month across the Pearl of Africa Uganda, although it is not as wet as April. It is still the low season –  so you can find discounts on lodging and hotels and some other services.

The long rains of March and April continue into May so this month is not considered the best time to travel. However, if you are not too worried about experiencing some rain during your safari it can be a lovely time to explore Uganda. Landscapes will be lush and verdant after months of rain which may make wildlife more difficult to see, but the vegetation will create stunning backdrops for photography.

May is not the best time to travel to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest or Mgahinga Gorilla National Parks for Gorilla tracking as the ground will still be wet making trekking more difficult. Alternative National parks that are good at this time include Kibale Forest National Park for Chimpanzee tracking and Murchison Falls National park allowing you to witness the mighty Nile River .

Some roads and trails may be impassable at the beginning of May depending on the intensity of the rainy season so please ask Great Adventure Safaris in advance of booking if there are certain areas you would like to travel to.

May is considered not the best time to go on a Uganda safari, however if you are not too much worried about the rain experience during your safari it can be fun and a lovely time to explore Uganda the Pearl of Africa. Uganda safaris – where & when to go, and what to do and see

Thinking of a Uganda safari? With the big five and some of the world’s best gorilla and chimpanzee trekking on offer Uganda is a safari destination that has it all. Now is a good time to go, as Uganda has yet to take off as a tourist destination in as large a way as many of it’s neighbours. This means safaris in Uganda can prove good value, with less crowds around when you get to the wildlife. It also has something of ‘the road less travelled’ feel about it.

Uganda is small by African standards at ‘just’ 236,000 km sq, around the same size as Great Britain. The country is lush and a verdant green, with one third of its borders made up of three of Africa’s Great Lakes, and the Victoria Nile running through the center. The East African tropical heat is tempered by an average altitude of 1,000 meters, with the east and west borders featuring significant mountains.

Self drive safaris are an option in some national parks in Uganda, though you will need access to a 4WD to get the most out the parks due to the clay tracks. The wildlife in Uganda doesn’t compare favourably in terms of density with it’s East African neighbours Kenya and Tanzania, but it is extremely diverse with over 500 mammal species alone. There are pockets with strong wildlife density – such as Murchison Falls National Park, which is relatively small with exceptional wildlife viewing – but the big safari draw in Uganda is the primate life. Uganda is probably the prime destination in the world for trekking opportunities to see habituated chimpanzee and gorilla families in the wild – a truly memorable experience, and one of the best walking safaris to be found anywhere.

Poaching and deforestation continue to be a problem in Uganda – as in much of the rest of Africa – and a recent oil discovery in Lake Albert has led to encroachment into a small area of Queen Elizabeth National Park. Despite this the general standard of national parks in Uganda is excellent, with good facilities, public transport access and range of lodgings, though infrastructure is not particularly developed. Tourist numbers in Uganda are much smaller than neighboring Kenya or Tanzania, meaning national parks are generally less crowded and offer a more enjoyable and intimate visiting experience.

Murchison Falls is one of Uganda’s top tourist sites, where over 300 cubic meters of water each second passes through a narrow gap in the rocks to keep the Victoria Nile flowing between Lake Kyoga and Lake Albert. The park surrounding the falls and river is one of Uganda’s top wildlife destinations.

Best time to safari in Uganda

As a relatively small country with a consistent altitude, the majority of the country enjoys the same topical climate. In the higher mountainous areas to the east and west of the country it can get surprisingly cold at night times. If you’re planning a game drive.January and February are the hottest months when wildlife viewing is at it’s best.

As with the rest of East Africa there’s a ‘long rain’ and a ‘short rains’ season – March to May and October to November respectively. During the short rains it generally rains only for short periods at a time, meaning your wildlife viewing will not be too disrupted. Travel to most destinations during rainy season is possible, though you should leave yourself more time to get around.

Gorilla trekking is possible year-round, and you’re virtually guaranteed to see gorillas on any planned gorilla trek. However, bear in mind that the trekking terrain is tough going with dense forest and steep hills, so ensure you dress appropriately. See more hints and tips on gorilla trekking .

National parks in Uganda

Though Uganda doesn’t have as high a safari profile as neighbours Kenya or Tanzania, there’s still plenty to see and do… and often with far smaller crowds. As well as the big five, Uganda is home to more than half the world’s remaining mountain gorilla, and plenty of chimps. It’s also recognized as one of the best places for bird spotting in the world. Most national parks in Uganda have a good range of accommodation, and the parks are easily accessible, making Uganda a great place for a safari.

Murchison falls national park.

Uganda’s first national park, and it’s largest, Murchison Falls is home to 80 mammal species and over 450 bird species, and is the jewel in the crown of the country’s safari industry. The park is predominantly open savannah grasslands, which makes for top game viewing.

Kibale National Park

Kibale National Park’s evergreen forest in Western Uganda contains an array of landscapes and is home to 12 species of primates. Aside from the stunning vistas and virgin forest, the big draw here is the chance to see chimpanzees in their natural habitat, with both chimpanzee tacking and habituation experiences on offer year round.

 Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park

Meaning ‘darkness’, Bwindi’s magnificent forest is certainly dense, and has hundreds of diverse mammal species (and 200 hundred species of butterflies!) alongside the population of around 320 mountain gorillas. There are four different areas with accommodation in the park to track habituated gorillas – Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga and Nkuringo.

Mgahinga National Park

Uganda’s smallest national park – just 34 km sq – in the south west of the country is part of the larger Virunga Conservation area that also spreads across Rwanda and Democratic Republic of Congo. Gorilla trekking is the main activity here, though spending a few days in the park will also allow you to hike the Virunga Volcanoes for unparalleled views of central Africa, and track the endangered golden monkey.

When to visit uganda, january to february, high season.

January through February bring relatively hot weather with clear skies, minimal rainfall, and plenty of sunshine, making it an excellent time to visit Uganda for gorilla trekking and chimpanzee tracking safaris in the lush forests.

During this period, the northern countryside of Uganda can become hot and dusty.

MARCH TO MAY

March marks the start of the rainy season, making it an ideal time to witness the birth of many animals. Additionally, birdwatchers will enjoy spotting a wide variety of colorful winged creatures during this time.

April is the wettest month in Uganda, and as a result, parks tend to be quieter, and some roads are impassable. March is also the low season, which means, budget travelers can enjoy discounted hotel and lodge rates.

In May, the first rainy season of the year draws to a close, bringing with it lesser downpours and an astonishing display of greenery throughout the countryside.

JUNE TO AUGUST

Peak season.

June marks the beginning of the peak season in Uganda, thanks to its stunning dry weather that extends through August. It's the perfect time for a safari, attracting many tourists to the country. However, it's essential to note that gorilla permits and descent safari lodges can book up quickly during this period. So, booking well in advance is wise to avoid any inconvenience.

While this may not be ideal for some, it presents a cost-saving opportunity for those willing to brave the rain. It's noteworthy that gorilla trekking excursions may be affected during this time.

Don't even worry about visiting Uganda as an LGBTQ traveler; Ugandans, both in the tourist industry and on the street, are warm, friendly, and relaxed hosts who don't care about visitors' sexual orientation. Their genuine hospitality is a highlight of any visit to Uganda.

Security & Traditions

Uganda is a safe destination for tourists, but petty theft and muggings can occur, especially at night, so travelers should avoid wandering alone in urban areas. While Ugandans are generally tolerant, they hold traditional beliefs, and public displays of affection may be frowned upon. LGBTQ+ travelers can visit the country without incident as long as they avoid demanding their rights during their vacation, as Ugandans do not police sexuality. Overall, visitors to Uganda can have a safe and enjoyable trip by being aware of their surroundings and respecting local customs.

To visit Uganda as a tourist, a single-entry, three-month visa is required, which costs US$50. All visa applications must be made through the Uganda immigration online system at visas.immigration.go.ug , and require a completed application form, two passport-size photos, and the correct visa fee paid at least a week before travel. Obtaining a visa on arrival at Entebbe International Airport is no longer possible. Additionally, your passport must be valid for at least six months from your intended travel date and contain at least one blank page.

Health & Vaccines

While there are no COVID-19 requirements for visitors to Uganda, proof of yellow fever vaccination is mandatory. The Ministry of Health also recommends Hepatitis A and B vaccinations for all visitors, and adventure travelers to rural areas should consider taking the typhoid vaccine. Malaria is a significant health risk in Uganda, so it's essential to consult with your doctor to obtain antimalarial pills before your trip. To avoid mosquito bites, sleep under a mosquito net at night and wear insect repellent during the day. Additionally, it's best to drink bottled or filtered water to stay healthy during your stay.

Phone & Internet Connection

Entebbe, Kampala, and other large towns and most tourist areas have good phone network coverage. However, signal strength can be variable in some remote areas. Local SIM cards are affordable, and international calling bundles make it easy to stay connected to home. It's best to have your mobile phone unlocked to use local sim-cards before arriving in Uganda; although unlocking services are available in Kampala, this may delay your travel plans. Wi-Fi is widely available in almost all lodges in the countryside, although the connection quality may vary.

Best Time To Go

Uganda is a year-round destination, with an average altitude of around 1,000m and a location squarely on the equator that helps to moderate the heat. The highest rainfall occurs between March and May and October and November, but gorilla sightings are still possible during these months, albeit with slippery and slower trekking conditions. However, this time is an excellent opportunity to save money on accommodation and gorilla permits. The best time to visit Uganda is from June to September, which is the peak season. Despite this, Uganda remains largely unaffected by mass tourism, and visitors can enjoy the country's attractions without worrying about crowds.

Uganda's currency is the Uganda shilling (UGX), which has an exchange rate of about USD 3,500 to $1. While larger hotels and tour companies may accept U.S. dollars and credit cards, local shops and restaurants typically only accept payment in shillings. To obtain local currency, you can withdraw money from ATMs in large towns or exchange your U.S. dollars at the airport, foreign exchange branches (known locally as forex), and local banks. US$50 and US$100 bills generally fetch better exchange rates, while bills printed before 2006 may not be accepted. It's best to use later bills to get the best exchange rates.

What should I expect on a Uganda safari?

Uganda has a fairly high population and human habitation reaches right up to the borders of many of the parks..

A striking feature that is most often seen in the areas near the rainforests is the use of terraced agriculture, which rings the hills in thousands of shades of green. Beginning at the main point of arrival in Entebbe, most safaris will head west to the broad belt of national parks that form the western border. Due to the country being situated right on the meeting point of the eastern savannah and western jungle ecosystems, Uganda has excellent terrain for a wide variety of safaris, from traditional game drives through golden grassland seeking lion or elephant to strapping on your hiking boots and trekking through lush rainforest. The birding is superlative, with the variation in habitat attracting a vast array of species, including the crowning glory of the shoebill, a highly sought-after sight for the true birder. The traditional Big Five parks of Uganda, Queen Elizabeth National Park and Murchison Falls, do not yet match the game densities of their contemporaries to the east. That said, the game viewing is still very much alive and well and the parks boast a mere fraction of the tourist numbers that may dilutes the experience for those visiting the more developed destinations. A sighting of lion, elephant or leopard here is a moment to treasure and is seldom shared with other vehicles.

Who is it for?

Uganda is the dream destination for those in search of the absolute pinnacle of primate safaris. Chimpanzees roam in numbers in Kibale and Queen Elizabeth National Park, as do colobus monkeys, vervet monkeys, de Brazza monkeys and a host of other species. The last mountain gorillas are carefully protected in the Impenetrable Forest of Bwindi. There is absolutely no exaggeration in gorilla trekking as life-altering. The destination is just as much sought after by birders, as Uganda boasts over a thousand species among its varied habitats. A keen birder can hope to encounter the handsome francolin, dwarf honeyguide and purple-breasted sunbird, among many other species that are very difficult to see anywhere else. And, like the gorilla, there is the highlight of seeing the unforgettable shoebill. Uganda outshines all other safari destinations in these two areas, but, in addition, it remains a superb destination for traditional safari by vehicle or by boat, thanks to its lush habitats and variety of species. For those in search of something fresh and vibrant, Uganda is the perfect choice.

How long to stay?

The length of a typical Uganda safari will vary. Those seeking to track gorillas will fly into Entebbe and often overnight on the shores of Lake Victoria before flying out to the south western parks the following morning. Experts recommend tracking the gorillas twice, as the first time is often a little overwhelming and guests don’t take it all in. After the gorilla experience, visitors usually fly back to Entebbe to continue their safari elsewhere or to head out onto the Ugandan safari circuit with visits to Kibale, Queen Elizabeth National Park and Murchison Falls. Further north, at the very tip of the country, travellers can explore the untouched open spaces of lesser-known parks like Kidepo. On average, however, stays range between four to six days.

When should I go?

Uganda is a good year-round destination, but the rainy seasons (March to May and November to December) can make logistics a little tricky. Rain also increases the difficulty of tracking in Bwindi, Mgahinga and Kibale, rendering the mountain slopes muddy. Uganda has a major advantage in terms of temperature – although its location is equatorial, the high altitude eases the heat, meaning that the weather remains temperate all year round. The high season for Uganda safari falls in line with other East African destinations, which means during the winter months in the southern hemisphere, from June to October.

Where to Go on an African Safari in May

May is a good time to visit most of southern Africa, including South Africa, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Botswana and Zambia. It is less ideal for safaris in East Africa, which experiences the Wet season at this time. Wildlife viewing gets better in southern Africa as the bush is drying out. This autumn month offers mild temperatures, in which to enjoy a safari to the fullest. It’s not high season yet, so prices tend to be favorable.

The Okavango Delta in Botswana Is in Full Flood

As the Dry season starts, the Okavango Delta fills up with rainwater traveling down all the way from the Angola highlands. This watery wonderland, surrounded by the Kalahari Desert, becomes a haven for thirsty animals. For a safari, the timing is ideal. The channels are now deep enough for exploration in mokoros (dugout canoes), but the peak season hasn’t started yet.

Beginning of the Dry Season in Southern Africa

May is a lovely shoulder month in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Zambia. It marks the beginning of the Dry season, the best time for wildlife viewing. The bush starts to dry out and animals start to gather around reliable water sources, which makes them easier to find. As the high season only really starts in June, you can capitalize on some good deals in May. Furthermore, the milder evenings and mornings make open-vehicle game drives more enjoyable in this month than in the colder winter months of June and July.

Stargazing in Sossusvlei in Namibia

May is a great month to visit Sossusvlei in Namibia. The cool autumn air offers fantastic photography conditions with skies clear of dust or clouds. The contrasts of colors between the red dunes and blue heavens are breathtaking, especially in the early morning and late afternoon. And then there is the night sky – you have to see it to believe it. This shoulder month is also superb temperature-wise. It’s not too hot during the day, but nights aren’t freezing either, as is the case in June to July.

Perfect Beach Weather in Bazaruto and Quirimbas in Mozambique

With the intense heat and rains of the summer out of the way, May is a lovely month to go to Mozambique. The moderate temperatures of this month are excellent for enjoying the picture-perfect beaches of the Bazaruto and Quirimbas Archipelagos. These islands are renowned for their diving and snorkeling opportunities, and the calm waters of May offer fine conditions with incredible visibility.

Day 2: Coffee Farm Tour & Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge

Enjoy an early breakfast and transfer to airport for your domestic flight to Kisoro. Flight time is approximated 1 hour.

On your arrival in Kisoro you will be welcomed by an expert guide and head for a community tour that includes a visit to a coffee farm. At the coffee farm, you will have the opportunity to learn about the sustainable farming practices in the Virunga massif which is a great way to promote social change through ecotourism.

After the tour, you will transfer to the Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge arriving in time for lunch & time to enjoy panoramic views of the Bwindi Forest. A recently proclaimed World Heritage site, Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is one of the most biologically diverse areas on earth and its unique, precious flora sustains roughly half of the world population of mountain gorillas – believed to number just 600. There’s also a substantial chimpanzee population and research shows that Bwindi is the only forest in Africa in which these two apes live together.

Day 3: Gorilla Trekking Experience

Following an early breakfast at the lodge, you will drive to the park headquarters for a morning briefing from the rangers before you enter the gorilla sanctuary.

Throughout the trek, you will be accompanied by experienced guides and trackers who will offer insightful information about the endangered mountain gorillas. Once you have found the gorillas, you will be allowed to spend 1 hour observing them from a 10-meter distance. The thrill of your encounter will erase the difficulties of the potentially strenuous trek.

Each encounter is different and has its own rewards, but you are likely to enjoy the close view of adults feeding, grooming, and resting as the youngsters frolic and swing from vines in a delightfully playful display. After tracking transfer back to your lodge for dinner and overnight.

After an early breakfast, depart Bwindi to Kisoro Airstrip for your scheduled flight back to Entebbe International Airport.

Local News | African Safari Wildlife Park to introduce capybaras, launch interactive experience

Capybaras, which are the world’s largest rodents, are found in wetlands throughout much of South America.

They are closely related to guinea pigs, and many individual capybaras are remarked on for their “chill” personalities, according to the release.

While capybaras are not threatened with extinction, they serve as ambassadors for vulnerable freshwater ecosystems around the world, the release said.

“Capybaras have become very popular over the past few years, and our guests have told us over and over that they want to see Capybaras at the Park,” said Park director Kelsey Keller in the release. “It wasn’t something we wanted to rush into.

“We put a lot of time, energy and research into designing and building the perfect home for these animals and making sure this habitat functions as a learning opportunity for our guests.”

The capybaras’ habitat is approximately 1,500 square feet in size and is outfitted with naturalistic features such as a large pool, a waterfall and ample shade.

The Park’s construction team is putting the finishing touches on this space ahead of the animals’ arrival in late May.

Also, the Park will introduce a capybara encounter in mid-June.

Guests participating in this interactive experience will have the opportunity to feed, touch and learn about the capybaras, the release said.

As with all of the Park’s animal experiences, this encounter is contingent upon weather and the animals’ voluntary participation.

“There’s definitely a ‘cool factor’ to getting up close and personal with a capybara, but this is first and foremost an educational opportunity for our guests,” Keller said. “We want to make sure they walk away with an appreciation for Capybaras and other animals that depend on lakes and rivers to survive.”

Like it or not, the cicada invasion is in full force.

Trillions of periodical cicadas part of Brood XIX and Brood XIII are emerging this year in multiple states, part of a rare, double-brood event. These 13- or 17-year cicadas have been waiting for the right soil conditions to come above ground, where they will eat, mate and die , with the newly-hatched nymphs burrowing underground to start the whole cycle over again.

The two broods, which are emerging in 17 states across the Southeast and Midwest, have not emerged at the same time since 1803, and won't do so again until 2245. While the two broods likely won't have any overlap due to being in different states, they are both emerging in parts of Illinois and Iowa.

The two cicada broods are projected to emerge in a combined 17 states across the South and Midwest. They emerge once the soil eight inches underground reaches 64 degrees, expected to begin in many states in May and lasting through late June.

The two broods  last emerged together in 1803 , when Thomas Jefferson was president.

Where are the cicadas already out in 2024?

Adult periodical cicadas from Brood XIX have been spotted by users in multiple states across the Southeast and Midwest, including in Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Illinois, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia, according to  Cicada Safari , a cicada tracking app developed by Mount St. Joseph University in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Brood XIII has started to emerge near Peoria, Illinois, according to the app.

What is a brood?

According to the  University of Connecticut , broods are classified as "all periodical cicadas of the same life cycle type that emerge in a given year."

A brood of cicadas is made up of different species of the insect that have separate evolutionary histories. These species may have joined the brood at different times or from different sources. These different species are lumped together under the brood because they are in the same region and emerge on a common schedule.

Why do cicadas make so much noise?

You'll have to thank the male cicadas for all that screeching. Male cicadas synchronize their calls and produce congregational songs, according to  Britannica , which establish territory and attract females. There is also a courting call that they make before mating.

The periodical 13-year and 17-year brood cicadas  are the loudest , partially because of the sheer number of them that emerge at once.

Kinds of Kindness review – sex, death and Emma Stone in Lanthimos’s disturbing triptych

Cannes film festival Yorgos Lanthimos reinforces how the universe keeps on doing the same awful things with a multistranded yarn starring Emma Stone, Willem Dafoe and Jesse Plemons

P erhaps it’s just the one kind of unkindness: the same recurring kind of selfishness, delusion and despair. Yorgos Lanthimos’s unnerving and amusing new film arrives in Cannes less than a year after the release of his Oscar-winning Alasdair Gray adaptation Poor Things . It is a macabre, absurdist triptych: three stories or three narrative variations on a theme, set in and around modern-day New Orleans.

An office worker finally revolts against the intimate tyranny exerted over him by his overbearing boss. A police officer is disturbed when his marine-biologist wife returns home after months of being stranded on a desert island, and suspects she has been replaced by a double. Two cult members search for a young woman believed to have the power to raise the dead.

Lanthimos uses repertory casting – and part of the film’s eerie joke effect, the effect of seeing the universe mysteriously doing the same awful things over and over, is in witnessing the same actors repeatedly showing up. Jesse Plemons , Emma Stone, Willem Dafoe, Mamoudou Athie, Margaret Qualley, Hong Chau and Joe Alwyn are each given a trio of roles, some intriguingly similar to each other, others quite different. Plemons is often stolid and unhappy. Stone is fierce and capable but sometimes vulnerable and sexual. Dafoe, of course, can’t help being the charismatic authority figure.

And what is even more unsettling is to see the same tropes, images and motifs come up: overeating, undereating; steak, chocolate, the same types of food. Dafoe’s overbearing executive Raymond gives Plemons’s unhappy underling Robert specific instructions on what to eat: “Because there’s nothing more ridiculous than skinniness on a man.” There are hospitals, ambulances, cops; places and people that mean unhappy submission to authority. Women get pregnant, and suffer miscarriages. People try to prove love by submitting to abuse and coercive control. There are recurring dreams whose contents are unsettlingly duplicated in waking existence. And perhaps most startlingly, there is sex, governed by a creepy roofie aesthetic. People keep drugging each other; Lanthimos keeps showing us unconscious naked women. And yet the men are the more contemptible and unattractive.

This is an uncanny world that looks like ours but really isn’t; like Emma Stone’s marine-biologist character, it has been perhaps replaced with a near-perfect copy by a malign unseen hand. Doubles and twins are another motif. And Lanthimos punctuates the bizarre recognition moments with a jarring, plinking piano key. The weirdness mosaic isn’t exactly like the Short Cuts of Robert Altman, who gave us a more recognisably human array of situations, nor is it exactly like the ensemble in Paul Thomas Anderson’s Magnolia, although Plemons’s cop has the same morose quality as John C Reilly’s officer in that film. The strangeness and fear are more like Charlie Kaufman’s and John Frankenheimer’s horror in seeing something off, something wrong – giveaway hints of a conspiracy or a higher truth.

The effect of it all is elegant and overwhelmingly stylish, yet maybe there’s not a superabundance of substance to go with the style. Kinds of Kindness feels heavier and longer than I expected, as if reaching for a meaningful resolution that might not be there. Yet absence and loss is perhaps the whole point.
