Study Away at NYU: Lifelong Global Learning

Cindy Nowicki

Associate Director of Content Strategy and Development

When students reflect on their study away journeys, it’s often the everyday things that stand out: conversing with locals in their host country’s language for the first time, learning to navigate their new city, or realizing they finally felt at home in their adopted culture. Through NYU’s global network of 15 locations on six continents, you have the chance to study away for a semester, a year, a January Term , or a Summer Session . You’ll find that global lessons are possible around every corner. It’s all part of the NYU experience.

Here’s what students shared when we asked them about their most memorable moments studying away.

Students walking on a wooden bridge suspended between trees in the forest.

“One of my most memorable experiences was leaving the city of Accra to visit the Western Region of Ghana. This was a special experience for me while studying at NYU Accra because I got a new perspective on Ghana and connected with nature.”

Jesiah Matthews , Sociology, College of Arts and Science, 2023

“I remember sitting on the grass in a park near my flat and striking up a conversation in Spanish with my neighbor. It was a moment when I felt I was beginning to feel settled in the city. I had an hour-long conversation in Spanish, which was a personal accomplishment. It was a small but significant shift during my time at NYU Buenos Aires .”

Giulia Nagle , Nursing, Rory Meyers College of Nursing, 2024

“My most memorable experience from studying away at NYU London was going to Glastonbury during a school-wide cultural programming trip. We explored King Arthur’s rumored burial grounds and hiked up Glastonbury Tor.”

Lucy Rapfogel , Global Liberal Studies, Liberal Studies, 2025

A boardwalk in Los Angeles at dusk.

NYU Los Angeles

“Sitting on La Jolla Cove, literally 10 feet away from the seals, which are my favorite animals in the world. It’s very important for me to be constantly immersed in nature, and that was one of the deciding factors in choosing to study away at NYU Los Angeles . California’s mountains, parks, beaches, and lakes were such a rejuvenating part of my semester.”

Shahad Hamwi , Film and New Media, NYU Abu Dhabi, 2023

A street in central Madrid with the Metropolis Building visible in the distance.

“One of my most memorable moments was a hike organized by NYU Madrid staff. It was toward the beginning of my semester away so I did not know many people. Nevertheless, we had the best time—I laughed the entire time. That’s when I first started to get to know the NYU Madrid community.”

Alexia Ramos , Sport Management, School of Professional Studies, 2023

A view of the Louvre from inside an archway.

“There is simply too much to choose from. Every single metro ride, cultural visit, lunch in the park, discussion in class, and yes, walk along the Seine, is part of a four-month-long moment at NYU Paris that was nothing short of special.”

Joanna Orphanide , Literature and Creative Writing, NYU Abu Dhabi, 2023

A bird’s-eye view of Prague.

“I’ll never forget the time my classmates and I programmed a concert for the Prague Symphony Orchestra. Our professor coached us along the way as we designed an experience to introduce young audiences to classical music in a more accessible environment. The opportunity at NYU Prague  for a bunch of college students to work with a professional philharmonic is hard to come by anywhere else!”

Joey Duke , Music Education, Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development, 2024

What NYU doesn’t tell you: London

Here are the most important tips for conquering city life at NYU London.

Gabrielle Trinidad Almeter , Staff Writer December 6, 2022

“What NYU doesn’t tell you” is a series started by the Abroad section meant to share advice on the ins and outs of the cities where NYU students study abroad.

As the semester comes to a close, I’ve acquired a lot of knowledge on London life. From study spots to nightlife to public transport, I’ve got you covered with the most helpful tips. Read on to ensure that your semester at NYU London runs as smoothly as possible.

Making the most of student life

NYU’s partnership with the University of London comes in handy for more than just studying — if you take up the university’s offer to join the Students’ Union UCL as a visiting member, you have access to a plethora of clubs and societies, discounted student nights at bars and clubs, and sports teams. UCL’s student nights include Team UCL’s Sports Night on Wednesdays, “Hips Don’t Lie” for reggaeton lovers on Thursdays, and even a Winter Ball toward the end of the term. All ticket prices start at £3, with drink prices as low as £3, making the events affordable and accessible to students.

Studying off campus

With stores dotting every corner, Pret A Manger is a great place to study, as long as you don’t mind the white noise. If you’re a caffeine addict like me, the popular franchise’s coffee subscription will come in handy. For only £12.50 the first month and £25 every month afterward, you can purchase unlimited organic coffee, tea and hot chocolate, with any milk alternatives. If you prefer to support local coffee shops, try exploring Fitzrovia or Marylebone, and you’ll find plenty.

Alternatively, try Lamb’s Conduit Street, a picturesque area a few blocks from campus. Aside from just coffee, the street is a one-stop shop for anything you might need —buy affordable groceries at The People’s Supermarket, browse minimalist clothing at Folk or discover a new classic at Persephone Books, a bookstore which sells novels mostly written by women.

If you prefer to study in a quiet space, look no further than the Senate House Library. The modernist building houses cozy reading rooms with individual desks and cubicles. With the assistance of a library card available to students through NYU’s partnership with the University of London, you can frequent the library from 9 a.m. until 11 p.m. on weekdays. It also serves as an excellent resource when writing papers.

Conquering the nightlife

Outside of student life, the prominent pub culture in London makes it easy to meet new people. Popular pub chain Wetherspoons serves affordable food and drinks, with the cost of a pint as low as £1.99 in some UK locations . Try using this cheap tipple finder to make sure you’re getting the best price on your alcoholic drinks next time you frequent a Wetherspoons. But beware, pubs typically close at 11 p.m. If you’re game to keep the night going, use the app Fatsoma to find affordably priced nightlife events in your area.

Experiencing the art scene

Maybe nightlife is not your speed, and that’s OK. London offers a variety of ways to experience the culture. Try exploring the city’s state-of-the-art museums, including the British Museum, the Natural History Museum and the Victoria & Albert Museum, to name a few. The best part is, they’re all free.

Home to famous playwrights such as William Shakespeare and Oscar Wilde, London has done an excellent job of preserving its theater culture. Luckily for us, it’s also incredibly affordable. While a simple search for the hit show “Hamilton” on Broadway puts the cheapest tickets at more than $100, I was able to see the play for less than £50 during my first week in London. Whether you’re a theater aficionado or not, I’d recommend taking advantage of London’s theater prices while you can. While government subsidies have kept the prices down, even in London’s West End, recent budget cuts from the art’s counsel threaten this integral aspect of London’s ecosystem.

Staying safe

Whether you’re enjoying a theater, pub or club at night, make sure to be accompanied by friends at all times. I was surprised to find out that pepper spray is illegal in London when mine was confiscated upon entering a club. If walking around at night without pepper spray gives you anxiety like it does for me, I’d recommend buying a personal attack alarm like She’s Birdie . But don’t panic — London is generally considered safe, given that it is a popular tourist destination.

Navigating public transport

While London is similar to New York City with its comprehensive underground transport system, do note that trains only run until midnight. That means if you’re coming home later, you’ll need to either take the bus or call an Uber. If you end up staying out until sunrise, the Tube does open at 5 a.m., so you may be in luck. NYU supplies students with refillable Oyster cards, and the metro system is super easy to navigate.

Gallatin Study Away Course SASEM-UG 9250, 4 credits Typically Offered: Fall and Spring Level: Undergraduate Gallatin requirement: HUM London, like New York is a rich and complicated city. Unlike New York however, it has been continuously occupied for just under 2000 years. Almost every epoch of London’s history can be detected in the city’s architecture and distinctive streetscape. This course is designed to work in three ways. Firstly it is an opportunity to learn about London’s architecture and art by physically exploring it. Secondly this class is an introduction to sketching and keeping a travel notebook, a basic and useful skill that any liberal arts student should have an experience of. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, this course teaches how to 'read' a town or city. The ability to visually make sense of European built-environment should really help in understanding the architecture of New York City and, of course, town and cities throughout the United States, and anywhere else. For the most up-to-date course schedule details and for information about NYU London, visit the NYU London homepage .

Producing in London

London is home to a thriving film and theatre scene, an ideal location to discover the ins and outs of the entertainment industry..

Learn the behind-the-scenes finaglings it takes to get a production off the ground with Tisch’s Producing in London summer program. Instructors with experience in the industry will guide you through the processes of fundraising and pitching, as well as maneuvering through the complex legal issues that all productions face. If you are an NYU student, you will also satisfy the two core requirements for the Tisch Minor in Producing , a useful complement to any degree in arts, entertainment, or business.

Program Overview

This three-week program will provide you with a foundational understanding of the dynamics of producing. Classes are held at NYU London, Bedford Square.

Photo of the London Eye against a clear blue sky

"The benefit of this program is that it’s a very small, intimate group - no more than 16 students in the program. So you would never have that experience here in New York, and that means that what I can do in terms of projects, in terms of in-class work and teamwork, with 16 people, I could never do with 60."  — Sharon Badal, Professor, Producing in London

Students will enroll in the following two courses for a total of 8 units.

NYU students: Both these courses count towards the  Minor in Producing .

Please Note: Students studying abroad on a Tisch track are not eligible to pursue an internship (except for Theatre in Ghana and Television Writing in London). Tisch programs do not provide work visas.

Producing Essentials

ISPEC-UT 1006 | 4 units | Instructor: Sharon Badal

Today’s major creative fields—film, television, music, theatre, dance, and new media—need quality producers. A producer with a firm knowledge of the craft, a discerning eye for material, fundraising ability, a grasp of the law, cash flow, people, and ethics is rare. This course provides students with a framework for understanding the dynamics of producing—as an art form and a business profession—and for completing a creative product in the entertainment and media industries. Students are introduced to the basic concepts, terms, and principles that apply to the role of producer in the entertainment and media industries along with the specific job functions that are required to effectively and efficiently complete a production.

Media Moguls

ISPEC-UT 562 | 4 units

This course attempts to track the American entertainment industry from its plebian origins through its rise to becoming the predominant mass entertainment culture in the world. Students discover the origins of the production practices that are employed in the entertainment industry today by following the legendary characters, movie moguls, and media titans of the early 20th century and the companies they built. The emphasis is on the way the visionaries of the time impacted seemingly risk-averse systems to invigorate and sometimes completely revolutionize them. These innovative men and women include, but are not limited, to Louis B. Mayer, George Lucas, Maya Deren, Shirley Clark, Nam Jun Paik, Lucille Ball, Russell Simmons, Clive Davis, Julie Taymor, and Steve Jobs.
