What's New?

The facelifted Tata Harrier and Safari have been launched in India. The Tata Harrier facelift is priced from Rs 15.49 lakh with prices for the automatic starting from Rs 19.99 lakh (ex-showroom). The Harrier Dark Edition is priced from Rs 19.99 lakh (ex-showroom). The Safari facelift's prices, meanwhile, start from Rs 16.19 lakh with the automatics and Dark Edition variants both priced from Rs 20.69 lakh (all prices, ex-showroom). The prices are introductory and valid for a limited period. The SUVs are priced at a premium over the outgoing models but pack in a lot more tech than before.

Starting with the exterior, both SUVs now get greater differentiation in design. Both SUVs retain the split headlamp design but now feature full-width lightbars up top with the main headlamps positioned lower down. Both SUVs also get different design bumpers with the Harrier featuring more triangular housings for the headlamps to the Safari’s more rectangular housings. The Safari also gets a silver-finished faux skid-plate element while the Harrier gets a black-finished piece. At the rear, both SUVs get revised tail lamps with a lightbar element along with redesigned bumpers.

Inside, both SUVs get a revised dashboard design with new control surfaces and more tech. Top models now feature a new 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system along with a new 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster. Furthermore, each trim level – Persona in Tata speak – gets its own unique interior trim finishes to stand out. There’s a lot to talk about by way of features as well with both SUVs packing in Advanced Driver Assistance Systems, powered tailgates, panoramic sunroof with mood lights, electronic parking brake with auto hold, ventilated front seats, ventilated seats in second row (Safari), powered driver seat and more.

Tata has also revised the variant names going from the previous XE, XM, XT and XZ variants to using Smart, Pure, Adventure, Fearless and Accomplished. As with the outgoing model, Tata is offering both SUVs with the Dark Edition variants.

Like many Tata models the Safari also gets drive modes so you have City, Eco and Sport and yes there is perceptible difference between City and Sport for sure. But there is also a terrain response system a la Land Rover. Rough Road mode, Wet mode and then back to the default City drive mode.

The Tata Safari carries the rich legacy of the original SUV that was a hit on Indian roads. The new Safari has been completely revamped and comes with more equipment and a whole new look and feel. 

How’s the Design?

The Tata Safari has a front fascia that is almost similar to the Harrier. The split headlamp cluster is the same and there is a differentiated tri-arrow pattern for the front grille with chrome finishing. There is a third row of seats now and the roofline is also higher for the SUV along with a rear overhang which is longer. It also comes with a rear quarter glass that is full-sized and the tail-end is also very upright. The tail lights are different from the Harrier though. There are chunkier roof rails which are designed to indicate a stepped roof. The Safari is longer and taller while the wheelbase and width remain the same. 

How does it perform?

The Tata Safari’s engine has high levels of refinement while there are Eco, City, and Sport driving modes. The engine offers a wide and punchy power band, while the Sport mode is the best for higher drivability. You can easily get the SUV up to higher speeds although there is some noise when you rev the engine hard. There are 6-speed manual and automatic transmission systems and the driving experience is also neat. The clutch is a little heavy if you are using the manual transmission unit. Slotting the gears will require a little more effort in turn. The automatic version comes with a unit from Hyundai and shifts smoothly engine. The Safari is responsive and agile enough.

How’s the driving experience?

The Tata Safari offers a mixed bag in terms of the driving experience and the ride. The steering feels heavier at lower speeds while higher speeds are not as comforting or balanced. However, the Safari is a good highway cruiser and offers more confidence and stability. The suspension system is more robust and is softer as well, leading to better absorption of bumps at lower speeds. The Safari can readily tackle bad roads, potholes and uneven stretches. 

What’s the interior like?

The cabin is quite similar to the Harrier. The dashboard looks neat although the Oyster White interior theme is the stand-out feature here. There is also the electronic parking brake now. There is a great view from the driver’s seat with mostly high quality materials inside. The central console, however, may eat into the driver’s knee room. The 8.8 inch touch screen infotainment unit appears small inside the car. The quality of the rear view camera could also have been better. There is a lengthy feature list including the JBL audio system, panoramic sunroof, and the powered seat for the driver along with connected tech features. Wireless charging is unavailable though. The middle row has theatre-esque seating with a higher placement for the seats. Comfort is great and the overall experience is good enough, with the 60:40 sliding function. There is a Boss  mode for adjusting the co-driver’s seat from the back itself. The top-end variant also gets a six-seater configuration with captain’s seats in the middle. These come with great cushioning and comfort, while offering several adjustments and a folding armrest. The rear windows however skip sun blinds and USB slots are hard to find when you venture near the central tunnel. The third row is accessible with the one-touch fold and tumble mechanism. Once you are in position, the space is not that bad. Adults will find decent legroom and the big windows create an airy feeling with blower control and two USB charging slots as well. 

Tech and infotainment

The Tata Safari comes with its 8.8 inch touch screen infotainment system with connected car and remote tracking functions, a reverse camera, panoramic sunroof, USB charging slots, JBL audio system, powered driver’s seat, and a lot more. 

Safety equipment

The Tata Safari comes with six airbags along with ABS, EBD, ESC, traction control, and brake assist. There are other features including fog lamps, parking sensors, and hill-descent control. 

Which variant to buy?

You may check out the XT option if you are on a tighter budget. The XMA is the value pick from all the variants, while if you are okay paying more, then the XZA or XZ variants are par for the course. The XE variant has decent equipment at the entry level including good safety features, projector headlamps, remote central locking, power outlets, and more. The XM trim comes with the automatic transmission option, a 7 inch touch screen infotainment unit, driving modes and more. The XT gets more premium features including TPMS, automatic wipers and headlamps, rear view camera, 18-inch alloy wheels, LE3D DRLs, iRA connectivity suite, ambient lighting, and a lot more. It comes only in the manual guise. The XT offers a panoramic sunroof for an extra amount. The XZ comes with an automatic transmission system and is a value offering with more airbags and safety features, the 8.8 inch touch screen infotainment unit, 7 inch semi-digital instrument console, terrain response modes, JBL audio system, Xenon headlamps, and more. The XZ+ and XZA+ take it up a notch with captain’s chairs and the sunroof but are costlier. The XZ+ Adventure is more popular with buyers due to its interior changes. 

Which cars compete in the segment?

The Tata Safari takes on the Mahindra XUV500 and the MG Hector Plus in its segment. It is the tallest and widest of the lot, while the MG Hector is the longest here. The Hector Plus has the biggest boot space while the Safari has the lowest volume. The Safari and Hector Plus both have more powerful diesel engines in terms of output. However, the torque output is the highest for the XUV500’s diesel engine. The Safari manages to hold its own in terms of features, design, handling, performance, and interior space. 

Verdict (Value for Money)

The Tata Safari offers a spacious and comfortable last row of seats along with a rugged and durable vibe. It offers good performance, a refined engine, and a long list of features. The SUV’s design is also a head-turner on the road. However, the driving dynamics and heavy steering could be minor hindrances. If you talk about a muscular and attractive three-row SUV with good performance, then the Tata Safari certainly makes a strong case for itself.

Tata Safari 2022 Variants Explained: Price, Mileage, Features, Colours and More

Tata Safari is one of the most popular SUVs on sale in India. Here, we tell you everything about the Tata Safari to help you choose the right model for you.

Tata Safari 2022: The Tata Safari has been one of the best-selling SUVs in the Indian market since the early 2000s. So when the Indian automakers announced a new-gen version of Safari last year, it was received with great response from the buyers. It was not just another facelift but a complete revamp of Safari. The reworked exteriors marked the new design language for the SUV inspired by Tata’s other SUV, Harrier. The new Safari is loaded with all modern safety and convenience features along with a premium finish for the interiors.

The new-gen Safari is offered with a single 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel engine unit delivering an output of 170 bhp of power and 350 Nm of peak torque. So, buyers at least don’t have to stress about selecting the engine unit but making a call between the seven variants of Safari is not going to be easy.

First up is the base model, Safari XE which comes with a base price of Rs 15.02 lakh (ex-showroom). And with that, the buyers get features like, tilt & telescopic adjust steering, projector headlamps, daytime running lamps, dual airbags, ABS with EBD, hill control, Electronic Stability Program (ESP), traction control and 16-inch steel wheels. The buyers also get AC went for the second and third-row passengers, with reclining second-row seats and 50:50 split in the third row.

With a price of nearly Rs 1.5 lakh over the XE variant, the Safari XM offers 7-inch touchscreen infotainment and a 6 speaker audio system with steering mounted control. The vehicle gets follow me home headlamps, fog lamps, rear parking sensor display, and Driver seat height adjust. The Safari XM comes with three driving modes, Eco, City & Sport in addition to all features of the base model.

Add another Rs 1.5 lakh and you get the XT variant of Safari loaded with features like Auto climate control, 8 speaker audio system, LED DRLs, auto headlamps and wipers, power-folding wing mirrors, rear centre armrest, keyless entry, ambient lighting, 18-inch alloy wheels, tyre pressure monitoring system, rearview camera, cruise control, android Auto & Apple CarPlay Connectivity and iRA Connected Car Technology.

With Rs 80,000 premium over Safari XT price, you get a panoramic sunroom in the Safari XT +. For a little more than Rs 90,000 over the price of the XT + variant, you are offered Safari XZ with options like Oyster White leatherette upholstery, Xenon HID projector headlamps, fog lamps with cornering function, terrain Response Modes – Normal, Rough & Wet, 8.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, 9 speaker JBL audio system (4 Speakers + 4 Tweeters & Subwoofer) with Amplifier, part-digital instrument cluster with 7.0-inch TFT display, 6 Airbags, ISOFIX child seat anchors, 6 way electrically adjustable driver seat, electronic parking brake with Auto Hold and Auto-dimming rearview mirror.

With the XZ+ variant, you get all features of Safari XZ+ with a panoramic sunroof and middle row captain seats for almost Rs 1 lakh premium.

There are also other Dark and Adventures of Safari sporting a few cosmetic upgrades in the interiors and exteriors.

Starting with Rs 15.02 lakh for the base model, Tata Safari prices go up to Rs 23.32 lakh for the XZA Plus Gold automatic variant.

Tata Safari facelift review: Flagship SUV goes more upmarket

The Safari gets a new look, more features and equipment, and a crucial mechanical change.

Tata Motors is on a wild update streak with its models. First, the Nexon got an update, then the Harrier and now, the flagship Safari gets a revamp. This isn't a minor nip and tuck job, because Tata has gone to town with the changes, and crucially, has focused on giving the Safari its own identity, rather than it being deemed as just a Harrier with a third row. It gets a completely new look, refreshed interior with modern tech and mechanical changes. Let’s see how well it has worked out.

Tata Safari facelift exterior styling

The Safari carries over Tata’s new design language without any change to the sheet metal. The ‘soft’ parts like the bumpers, grille and lights are all new and this has completely changed the look of the car. The LED Daytime Running Lamp runs across the width of the nose, with the Safari also getting sequential turn indicators. The ‘parametric’ grille is a single-piece unit compared to the Harrier’s split setup and is a point of differentiation between the two models, and, for the Safari, they are body-coloured. Further down, the LED headlamps and LED fog lamps are housed in a black casing, which also gets Safari lettering in chrome. Since there is no split grille, the air intake is blacked out with a faux metal scuff plate for that butch look.

Over to the side, the Safari gets 19-inch wheels on the top-spec variant and 17- and 18-inch options on the lower trims. The wheels do a very good job of adding road presence, and also get aero inserts that help reduce drag. You might also remember the wheel design that was previewed on the Tata Sierra concept shown at the Auto Expo. The alloys are wrapped with 245/55 R19 tyres, and being relatively lower profile, they have an impact on ride quality. More on that in a bit. Other Safari traits continue like a rising shoulder line and the roof with the famous kink.

At the rear, things are simpler, with revisions to the tail-lamps, which make it sharper, and an LED strip joining the two. The bumper too is all new with sharp lines, and there is a faux metal bash plate for that rugged look. That said, one of the most important updates is seen when you wag your leg under the bumper: the boot now gets gesture control for opening, and is finally electric.

Tata Safari facelift interior and features

Like the Harrier, the Safari comes specced with the ‘persona’ that you choose. The top-spec ‘Accomplished’ gets a dual-tone interior with white and brown upholstery. It has an air of premiumness, but the light-coloured seats and panels on the steering and doors will be difficult to maintain. The passenger side also gets an artificial wood panel with pinstriping which looks upmarket but may not be to everyone’s tastes.

The Safari gets the same four-spoke steering as the Harrier along with a gloss black panel and the backlit Tata logo that you just can't keep free of smudges and marks. There is also a fully digital instrument cluster that has customisable layouts, and the option of a map view once you’ve connected your phone via Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. That said, for a full map view, Android users will have to use Google Maps and Apple users will have to use Apple Maps. The cluster also displays drive mode changes, terrain mode changes and ADAS settings as well. The brightness, sharpness and overall viewing angles are good.

Next is the 12.3-inch touchscreen that gets wireless connectivity for Apple and Android and is slick to respond. It also packs in a lot of the settings for HVAC, ADAS, air purifier, audio modes and mood lighting. The audio system is also updated from a 9-speaker system to 10 speakers, along with a sub-woofer and 13 presets in the screen to choose from. The presets are very well calibrated and do enhance the music experience. You can also have individual modes for individual seats making the whole experience even more personal. The other highlight on the Safari is the 360-degree camera, which is high resolution and is a big plus while manoeuvring this SUV.

Under the screen are the HVAC controls on a gloss black panel, with the only physical buttons being the temperature toggles for the dual-zone climate control. Everything else, including the fan speed, is on a touch-based panel. Adjusting the fan speed or even functions like the electric tailgate opening is rather difficult as the feedback and response from the panel aren’t good. On the move, this would be an even more frustrating experience, and it’s better to use voice commands, which, despite not being the quickest, at least doesn't let you fumble.

Further down is a wireless charging pad that is difficult to access. You need to angle your phone in an awkward manner trying to dodge the knurled terrain response selector and cram your phone in, which, inevitably, will hit the panels around. Taking it out is the same story as you more often than not end up hitting the HVAC buttons or scraping your phone. For charging, there is a USB-A and a 45W type-C port as well.

Next is the terrain response selector that is unnecessarily large, and beside it are the non-backlit drive mode buttons. When you do change the drive modes, however, the ambient lighting too changes colour momentarily. Green for Eco, blue for City and red for Sport. What’s also new on the Safari is the drive selector for the automatic version, which is a shift-by-wire mechanism, and an electric parking brake, which replaces the aircraft-style brake lever on the top-spec version. The centre storage also gets vents to be used as a cool box, and a USB-A and a type-C port as well.

Tata Safari facelift seating 

The seats on the new Safari are powered for both driver and passenger with memory functions for the driver and ventilation for both. They are fairly broad and supportive, but cushioning is on the firmer side. However, on the whole, the new Safari is leaps ahead of the previous gen, both in terms of features and design.

There has been no change to the Safari’s wheelbase, so space in the middle row remains unchanged, The captain seat version also gets ventilation and there are USB-A and type-C ports here as well. There are AC vents in the B-pillar too, but surprisingly, no blower control for the middle row. The theatre-like seating position allows you to get a good view out, and the addition of sunblinds is a plus to have on hot days. What further elevates the sense of space is the panoramic sunroof, which gets ambient lighting and adds flair to the cabin at night.

Entering the third row past the captain seats isn’t easy since they don’t tumble down. They only recline and don’t slide forward enough for easy access. It’s easier to use the space between the two seats as a passage to access the third row. However, once you’re seated at the back, the amount of room is impressive even for tall adults. Sure, headroom is tight for occupants over six feet, but the adjustable backrest angle and sliding middle row make the third row properly usable, and the most spacious in its class. There are three-point seat belts for two, individual headrests, AC blower controls and USB-A and a type-C ports. The downside is the boot space, which, with all three rows up, is only good for a couple of soft bags.

In terms of safety, the Safari gets the usual goody bag of sensors and assists, along with ADAS. The Safari gets six airbags as standard, and the top-spec version gets an additional knee airbag, taking the count to seven.

Tata Safari engine, gearbox and performance

The updated Safari gets the same 2.0-litre diesel engine making 170hp and 350Nm as before, but in BS6.2 guise. Tata claims to have upped the damping and refinement but, to be honest, it is still one of the sore points of the Safari: there is that typical diesel clatter at idle that seeps into the cabin. As you get going and the engine speed rises, the gruff noise increases. That said, the engine feels strong to perform and has a wide torque band. Mid-range is where you will get that punch, and response overall is solid. The Safari is also very happy and comfortable at highway speeds. Changing the drive modes also changes the response, just as before. In Eco and City, the engine is laidback, but switch to Sport, and there is a noticeable gain in response. This is largely to do with the pedal mapping, which, as you change modes, alters the response to the accelerator, giving you a noticeable change in driving manners.

Mated to the engine is the same six-speed torque converter automatic gearbox. Quick shifts and lightning-fast responses are not something it prefers, and the shifts are carried over in a leisurely manner. Sure, sport mode does help, but inherently, it's a relaxed gearbox.

To gain more control, there is also the option of paddle shifters, a new addition in the updated Safari. However, they don’t particularly enhance the driving experience as manually shifting via the paddles isn’t very quick or responsive. Operate the paddle shifters and the powertrain automatically defaults to Sport mode, but the experience isn’t exactly sporty. The shifts are slow and downshifts are frustratingly delayed if the engine is at high revs. This doesn’t allow for enthusiastic manual shifting and it's best to let the gearbox work on its own. What is another irritant is operating the new shift-by-wire shifter, which requires the right technique. During three-point turns, shifting from D to R and back is a fiddly affair, since there isn't a clear response from the lever. It often gets stuck in N or simply doesn’t change the gear. This will take owners some time to get used to, and a lot of patience.

Tata Safari handling and ride comfort

Speaking of three-point turns, arguably the biggest and the most important update on this Safari is the steering system. Gone is the older hydraulic power steering unit, and in its place is a modern electric power steering (EPS) that has transformed the way the Safari handles. To start off, at low and city speeds, you no longer have to muscle the car around, and get your arm workout done. The steering is light and easy in Eco and City mode, making parking very convenient. In Sports, it does weigh up to add some feel while driving. Three-point turns are done with minimal effort and getting it out of tight spots is very easy too. Tata has also increased the track on the new Safari owing to the bigger wheels, but it isn't something that was noticeable through corners.

On the subject of ride, Tata has retuned the suspension with updated dampers, spring rates and new bushings, giving the Safari a softer setup than before. However, shod with big, 19-inch wheels and lower profile tyres, bump absorption is compromised. Over a broken patch of road, you will notice sharp movements and potholes are met with quite a thud. The toughness of that Land Rover platform does shine through with the taut and tight body control the faster you go. On the highway, the ride is composed and flat, and the sense of control and stability you get is the hallmark of the Safari, which makes it a great high speed cruiser.

Tata Safari ADAS performance

The other big talking point on the Safari is the ADAS: it gets adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, collision warning, automatic braking, rear cross-traffic alert and blind spot monitoring. Lane keep assist is also part of the package, but will be introduced later as a software update.

In our conditions, the ADAS works well, especially the adaptive cruise control which does the job even at slow bumper-to-bumper speeds. The lane departure warning system is good at detecting lanes correctly too. What could have been better, is the automatic emergency braking. We found that despite driving closer than usual to the car in front (done for testing the ADAS) it did not activate the brakes, despite adjusting the setting of the brake activation to the maximum distance. Tata claims this is done specifically with India’s erratic traffic conditions, but we would have liked the emergency braking to kick in from a safe distance. Rear cross-traffic alerts and blind spot monitoring, on the other hand, work flawlessly.

Another plus point is that the Safari, along with the new Harrier, recently received a 5-star rating in adult and child occupant protection by Global NCAP.

Tata Safari verdict

Prices for the Safari start at Rs 16.19 lakh (introductory, ex-showroom, India) for the base Smart manual variant.  With this update, many of the Safari’s weaknesses have been addressed, with the electric power steering, electric tail gate, more features and a modern design. However, the engine refinement and some ergonomic issues are still present.

But what the Safari will be banking on is its fantastic road presence, hugely practical and spacious cabin, and lastly, the wide array of variants on offer. It sure is a lot more car for the money now, and that’s something SUV buyers today are willing to pay for.

Safari   Price : The Tata Safari is available within a price range starting from Rs 15,84,900 (ex-showroom) and extending up to Rs 25,21,500 (ex-showroom).

Variant: The primary variants include XE, XM, XMS, XT+, XZ, XZ+, XZA, XZA+, XZA+(O), and XTA+. For those seeking exclusivity, the 'Dark' and the newly introduced 'Red Dark' editions are solely available in the top trim.

Engine : Powering the Safari is the same 2-litre diesel engine (169 bhp/350Nm) found in the Harrier. This robust engine can be mated with either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission.

Mileage : The Manual Diesel variant offers an impressive claimed mileage of 16.14 Kmpl, while the Automatic Diesel variant maintains a mileage figure of 14.08 Kmpl.

Tata Safari 2022-2023 Detailed Review

It is readily apparent that it is a Tata Harrier derivative, at least from the front. The only noticeable alteration is the new, chrome-finished tri-arrow motif for the Safari's grille. The split headlamp system is identical.

The Safari has a taller roofline, a longer rear overhang, a full-size rear quarter glass, and is also more upright in the back to enable a third row of seats. Even the taillights differ, although being treated similarly.

Safari smartly carries the template set by the Harrier making it look one of the better-looking vehicles in the Segment.

An 8.8-inch touchscreen entertainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability has been installed inside the automobile by Tata. Additionally, iRA connected car technology is added for remote smartphone connectivity.

The SUV also includes ambient lighting, a nine-speaker JBL sound system (Only for selected variants), a cooled glove box, and a seven-inch TFT colour display in the instrument cluster. The dashboard's layout is identical to that of the Harrier; however, its color has been modified. It is now oyster white with ashwood on top, with black. Also available in oyster white and black finishes are doorpads. Dark editions get all black interiors while the the Adventure edition gets a slightly brown interior. Kaziranga edition gets a dual tone leather upholstered interior. 

Benecke-Kaliko oyster white perforated leather upholstery covers the seats. The interior of the Safari feels airy due to its white color scheme.

While the standard trims get white interiors, which may be a little difficult to maintain, Dark editions and Kaziranga editions do give the consumer an option of darker interior options.

The same 2.0L diesel engine that powers the Harrier, Compass, and Hector also powers the Safari. The "Kryotec170" motor is coupled to a 6-speed MT or AT and generates 168 BHP (at 3,750 rpm) and 350 Nm (at 1,750–2,500 rpm). The acceleration is swift enough, and there is always enough punch available. This SUV can travel long distances comfortably and is a capable vehicle.

FCA sourced diesel is a punchy and a relatively frugal unit for the segment. Not the best in terms of refinement though.

Safari 2022-2023 engine specifications:

The Safari has a semi-independent twist blade system with a panhard rod in the back and an independent McPherson strut front suspension with coil springs and an anti-roll bar. While the rear suspension has been modified by Lotus Engineering, UK, the front is fairly like the Land Rover Discovery Sport. The ride quality of the Safari is sophisticated with a hard edge. It is sufficient for city driving and will keep the Safari's passengers at ease.

Even at high speeds, straight line steadiness is quite good. The Safari is also not bouncy at high speeds, and freeway uphill and downhill undulations are rapidly recovered by the rear end. The chassis and 235 mm tires provide adequate grip. There is body roll, and you can sense the height and weight of the vehicle.

One of the better handling vehicles in the segment. Although the ride quality has gone down by a couple of notches when compared to its older namesake.

The Safari has curiously not yet been tested, despite Tata constantly being ready to tout the Global NCAP ratings of their vehicles. Given Tata's track record of success, it would be realistic to predict a rather high rating when the SUV is finally certified by the Global NCAP.

The multitude of safety features should also keep you safe in risky situations. The Safari comes standard with six airbags, an anti-lock braking system with electronic brake-force distribution, an electronic stability program, disc brake wiping, hill hold control, rollover prevention, hill descent control, and traction control.

Lack of GNCAP may be a cause of concern to the discerning buyers. However, Tata has done well to give a host of Safety features.

I won’t mince words — the iPad Pro 2024 is one of the best tablets I’ve ever reviewed. Its predecessor, the iPad Pro M2 once reigned supreme as my favorite premium tablet. But the latest model has everything I love about iPad Pro, only enhanced and updated. Right now, it’s the premium tablet to beat.

So what makes the new iPad Pro so great? For starters, the Ultra Retina XDR display is the finest OLED panel my eyes have ever seen. The 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio delivers deep blacks and eye-scorching whites that pair perfectly with the sharp 2,360 x 1,640 resolution. Everything from videos to games and comics looks stunning.

Then we have the thin yet sturdy aluminum chassis that makes the iPad Pro appear more like the iPad Air. Ironically, both 11- and 13-inch iPad Pro models are thinner and lighter than the new iPad Air 2024 tablets, making you question which are the true “Air” slates in Apple’s roster. Thanks to the thinner and lighter design, the iPad Pro is more portable than ever — not to mention more comfortable to hold for long periods.

Apple skipped an M3 iPad Pro and dropped an M4 -powered beast on us instead. Our testing reveals this beefy processor runs circles around its predecessors. It can run graphically demanding games like Resident Evil 4 or editing apps like Premiere Pro with ease thanks to the M4 chip. 

There isn’t much I don’t like about the iPad Pro. However, there are a couple of drawbacks — both related to price. Adding nano-texture glass at checkout costs an additional $100 and requires an upgrade to 1TB of storage, which ups the cost to $1,699 for the 11-inch Pro and $1,999 for the 13-inch model. And if you want the updated Apple Magic Keyboard to go with it, you’ll need to plunk down an additional $299 or $349, depending on the iPad Pro’s size.

• What is it? Apple’s premium tablet, featuring an all-new design and a powerful M4 chip.
• What does it cost? The iPad Pro starts at $999 for the 11-inch model and $1,299 for the 13-inch variant, both of while are on sale via Apple’s website . Each is $200 more than their respective predecessors.
• Who is it for? For folks who want an OLED tablet with blazing-fast performance and all-day battery life.
• What do we like? The thin and lightweight design, gorgeous OLED display, and speedy performance.
• What don’t we like? Upgrading to a model with nano-texture glass raises the price of the 11- and 13-inch models to $1,699 and $1,999 (respectively). The Magic Keyboard is also very expensive. 
• Anything I should know? All iPad Pro 2024 models currently come with an Apple M4 chip inside, but they aren't all equal. iPad Pro 2024 models with 1TB or more of storage get the full-powered M4 with a 10-core CPU and 10-core GPU, along with 16GB of RAM. But iPad Pro models with less than 1TB of storage come with only 8GB of RAM and a 9-core CPU on the M4, so they will likely perform slightly worse than the 1TB model we review here.

Visually, the new tablet isn’t a radical departure from its predecessor. It’s a solid piece of aluminum featuring a large display and thin profile. However, holding the tablet reveals that you’re dealing with an all-new device.

The 11- and 13-inch iPad Pro are thinner and lighter than their predecessors and the new iPad Air tablets. The size and weight differences might not look like much on paper, but they make a huge difference in the real world. For instance, I constantly have to reposition my hands when reading comics on the old 12.9-inch iPad Pro because the big tablet is so cumbersome to hold. That's no longer the case since the new tablet is easier to hold over longer periods.

Speaking about changing positions, the tablet’s front camera is now landscape-oriented instead of portrait-oriented. Most people hold tablets in this position, so it’s great that Apple finally moved the front camera (much like it did with the iPad 2022 ). This makes participating in video calls, taking selfies and using FaceID to unlock the iPad Pro feel more intuitive. I’m a fan of this repositioned front camera.

Like the previous model, the new iPad Pro only has a single USB-C port. That’s a bummer, but not a deal-breaker.

Amazing OLED display

People have been clamoring for an OLED iPad Pro for ages, and now it’s finally here. The new design is nice but the Ultra Retina XDR display (as Apple dubs it) could be this tablet’s main selling for some people. To my eyes, the screen is both bright and colorful. The contrast between dark and light elements is astonishing, delivering beautiful photos and videos. It’s really quite striking.

I watched a YouTube video called “LG Jazz HDR UHD” and was floored by how magnificent it looked on the iPad Pro. The pure black elements served as an excellent contrast to the vibrant colors. On top of that, the 120Hz refresh rate ensured everything moved silky smooth.

If you like digital comics, you’ll have a great time on the iPad Pro. Color comics like Conan the Barbarian #9 and monochrome books like Savage Sword of Conan #2 look equally fantastic. The former’s rich colors and dark shadows make the story feel more alive, while the latter’s deep black inks let me see individual lines in great clarity.

Moving over to our display test, the new iPad Pro’s color reproduction, color accuracy and brightness aren’t much different than the previous model. However, the OLED display helps everything appear much richer — especially colors. Even if the iPad Pro 2024 has comparable color values to the previous model, the overall picture quality is much better thanks to the display’s OLED technology.

I’m a professional writer but I have a hard time conveying just how good the iPad Pro’s OLED display appears. This is arguably the best OLED display I’ve ever seen on a tablet. You need to see it to believe it.

Incredible performance 

Our 13-inch iPad Pro review unit packs an M4 chip with a 10-core CPU, a 10-core GPU and an updated Neural Engine (which the rest of the industry calls an NPU). Our tablet has 1TB of storage but no nano-texture glass. Toss in Wi-Fi + Cellular, and this review unit is valued at $2,099 as configured.

Like the M3 chip which also utilizes 3nm technology, the M4 processor features hardware-accelerated mesh shading, ray tracing and Dynamic Caching — all of which are a first for the iPad platform.

I used the iPad Pro as a laptop and the tablet had no problem handling my regular workflow, which usually has me juggling multiple open tabs and applications. The iPad Pro never slowed down even when I tossed a YouTube video into the mix. The tablet also handled digital comics without a hitch.

The iPad Pro also did well in our benchmark tests. On Geekbench 6, which tests overall CPU performance, the M4-driven iPad Pro performed almost twice as fast as its M2 counterpart. 

However, there is one caveat: We’re comparing Geekbench 6 scores for the iPad Pro 2024 to older Geekbench 5 scores for the 2022 model, since we switched versions a little while back. The important thing to know is that Geekbench 5 results are not directly comparable to Geekbench 6 scores, but the huge difference between the two here tells you all you need to know: The iPad Pro 2024 is significantly faster than its predecessor. The new tablet also performed faster in our Adobe Premiere test, but not by a staggering amount of time.

What about gaming? Resident Evil 4 runs fairly well, though it was short of the 60 frames per second standard most gamers like myself desire. I didn’t have a way to see the game’s exact frame output, but to my eyes, it seems to be a steady 30 fps. That’s not great, but it’s still playable.

Lastly, we ran the 3D Mark gaming benchmark on iPad Pro. Not only did it score better than the previous model, but it also pumped out more frames per second. I’m eager to see how iPad games optimized for the M4 chip will perform.

All-day battery life 

Before this review I wondered if the iPad Pro’s OLED display and beefier M4 chip would negatively impact battery life. Thankfully, this isn't the case as the iPad Pro lasts much longer than Apple claimed, at least according to our testing.

In our battery test which involved continuous web-surfing over Wi-Fi with the display set to 150 nits of brightness, the iPad Pro lasted for an astonishing 13 hours and 13 minutes. That not only beats the 10 hours Apple promised but also breezes past the iPad Pro M2’s 10 hours and 39 minutes of battery life. 

This is an incredible result that makes the iPad Pro 2024 the new premium tablet to beat in terms of battery life. 

iPad Pro 2024 review: The downs

As a device, the iPad Pro is a marvel of engineering. Unfortunately, if you want to kit the tablet out with upgrades or peripherals, it’s going to cost you. A lot. 

Nano-texture glass is a pricey upgrade

You can upgrade both iPad Pro models to include nano-texture glass, which makes the display more anti-reflective. This should be a useful feature when using the tablet outdoors or in a space with overhead lights. However, upgrading to nano-texture glass isn’t cheap.

Nano-texture glass is only an option for the 1TB and 2TB iPad Pro models. Upgrading to 1TB at a minimum raises the price by $600 for both models on its own, but when you toss in the extra $100 for nano-texture glass, that’s a total of $700 extra!

If you already wanted more than 512GB of storage or the extra comforts of the 1TB models (they come with a full-powered M4 and 16GB of RAM, while iPad Pros with less than 1TB of storage have a weaker M4 and 8GB of RAM) then perhaps this won’t be an issue. But unless you’re a creative professional who needs to store lots of videos and photos on the iPad Pro, most people (arguably) don’t need 1TB of storage on a tablet. In that sense, you’re expending the better part of $1,000 for something you don’t need just for nano-texture glass.

Great peripherals at a steep price 

The Apple Magic Keyboard and Apple Pencil have always been useful peripherals that help you get more functionality from the iPad Pro. Both have received updates that enhance the iPad Pro experience.

The new Magic Keyboard’s palm rests and touchpad have an aluminum finish that’s reminiscent of a MacBook. Similarly, the larger touchpad also reminds me of an Apple laptop — as does the new Magic Keyboard’s flatter hinge. As a bonus, this peripheral feels lighter than before and doesn’t add a lot of weight to the iPad Pro.

Typing on the new Magic Keyboard is quite nice thanks to how pleasant the aluminum feels against the palms. The large touchpad also feels smooth and is as responsive as ever. I also enjoy the keycaps, which feel thicker and have more travel distance.

The new Apple Pencil Pro ($129) has some nifty extra features over the basic Pencil. This includes a rollable barrel you can rotate to intelligently switch pen styles, haptic feedback and squeeze to control the input in newer ways. The new barrel roll feature is particularly impressive since you can change a line’s thickness by twisting the pen’s orientation. The Apple Pencil Pro feels exactly like its predecessor, which is great since that’s my favorite stylus.

I like both peripherals but they don’t come cheap. For instance, the Magic Keyboard costs $299 for the 11-inch iPad Pro and $349 for the 13-inch model. If you want to use the 13-inch inch iPad Pro as a laptop replacement, you’ll have to spend at least $1,648. At that point, you might as well get a MacBook Air M2 , which costs $999 to start.

At $129, the Apple Pencil Pro won’t crush your bank account. If you’re a casual or professional artist, I don’t think that price is too bad. But if that’s still too expensive, you can always opt for the $79 Apple Pencil with USB-C , though it lacks the Pro's advanced features and doesn’t wirelessly charge when magnetically attached to the iPad Pro.

iPad Pro 2024 review: Verdict

The iPad Pro 2024 is an exceptional tablet. Its vivid OLED display is a marvel to behold and the new thin and light design makes it more portable than ever. I’m also a fan of its speedy M4-powered performance and astonishing battery life. Sure, its peripherals are expensive, but as a device, the iPad Pro has everything you could ever want from a tablet.

The only loose thread is the iPad Pro’s AI capabilities. This has been a sticking point for me whenever I review an “AI” computer since there just aren’t many applications that take advantage of a chip's NPU (Neural Processing Unit) in any appreciable way. Apple says the M4 and its onboard Neural Engine NPU is an “absolute powerhouse for AI,” but I’ve yet to see that. Hopefully, the company will go into further detail during WWDC 2024.

Even if the iPad Pro never becomes an AI powerhouse, it’s still an incredible tablet for people who want a powerful slate with a gorgeous OLED display. The iPad Pro has set a standard for all premium tablets to follow.

Here’s every electric vehicle that currently qualifies for the US federal tax credit in 2024

As sales of electric vehicles continue to grow in 2024, many new and prospective customers have questions about qualifying for a federal tax credit on electric vehicles. Whether your vehicle qualifies or not is a simple yes or no question, but the amount you may qualify for varies by household due to a number of different factors. Luckily, we have compiled everything you need to know about tax credits for your new or current electric vehicle into one place.

The idea in theory is quite simple, per the IRS – “You may qualify for a credit up to $7,500 under Internal Revenue Code Section 30D if you buy a new, qualified plug-in EV or fuel cell electric vehicle (FCV). The Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 changed, but extended the terms for this credit for vehicles purchased between 2023 to 2032.

That said, you cannot simply go out and buy an electric vehicle and expect Uncle Sam to cut $7,500 off your taxes come April. In reality, the amount you qualify for is based on both your income tax as well as several specifications of the electric vehicle you purchase, including where it’s built. More on that below.

First, let’s take a second to truly understand how the Federal EV tax credit currently works.

First and foremost, it’s important to understand three little words the government slips in front of the $7,500 credit – “may” and “up to.” As in, you may qualify for up to $7,500 in federal tax credit for your electric vehicle. At first glance, this credit may sound like a simple flat rate, but that is unfortunately not the case.

For example, if you purchased a Tesla Model 3 and owed say, $3,500 in income tax for the year, then that is the federal tax credit you would receive. If you owed $10,000 in federal income tax, then you would qualify for the full $7,500 credit.

It’s important to note that any unused portion of the $7,500 is not available as a refund nor as a credit for next year’s taxes. Bummer.

The following terms were introduced by the Biden Administration in the summer of 2022 and went into effect on January 1, 2023:

• The timeline to qualify is extended a decade from January 2023 to December 2032
• Tax credit cap for automakers after they hit 200,000 EVs sold is eliminated, making GM, Tesla, and Toyota once again eligible
• That means you can get your credit up front at the dealer, but these terms may not kick in until 2024
• Two binary pieces separate the full $7,500 credit meaning the vehicle either qualifies for each piece of the credit or doesn’t
• $3,750 of the new credit is based upon the vehicle having at least 50% of its battery-critical minerals from North America or countries with a free trade agreement with the United States.  This is a list of countries with free trade agreements with the US .
• The other $3,750 of the new credit is based on at least 50% of the battery components of the vehicle coming from the United States or countries with a free trade agreement with the US
• Note – these battery requirements have been updated as of May, 2024. More below.
• The 50% critical minerals requirement increases to 60% in 2025, 70% in 2026, 80% from 2027 onward.
• The 60% battery components requirement now stays as such through 2025, then increases to 70% in 2026, 80% in 2027, 90% in 2028 and 100% from 2029 onward.
• Beginning in 2025, any vehicle with battery minerals or components from a foreign entity of concern is excluded from the tax credit
• Qualifying EVs must also have a battery size of at least 7 kWh and a gross vehicle weight rating of less than 14,000 pounds
• Subject to other requirements like lower annual income (see below)
• Revised credit applies to battery electric vehicles with an MSRP below $55,000
• Also includes zero-emission vans, SUVs, and trucks with MSRPs up to $80,000
• Includes separate qualifications and limits
• The federal EV tax credit will be available to individuals reporting adjusted gross incomes of $150,000 or less, $225,000 for heads of households, or $300,000 for joint filers
• The new credit will also continue to apply to Plug-in Hybrid EVs (PHEVs) as long as they meet the same requirements outlined above

Revamped used electric vehicle tax credit

Used EVs also got revised terms that now offer a credit equal to 30% percent of the sale price (up to $4,000). That should help consumers like yourselves get some change back in your pocket at the end of the fiscal year. As long as you stick to these terms as outlined by the IRS .

To qualify as a customer, you must:

• Be an individual who bought the vehicle for use and not for resale
• Not be the original owner
• Not be claimed as a dependent on another person’s tax return
• Not have claimed another used clean vehicle credit in the three years before the EV purchase date
• Modified adjusted gross income must not exceed $75k for individuals, $112,500 for heads of households, and $150k for joint returns

For the used EV to qualify for federal tax credits, it must:

• Have a sale price of $25,000 or less
• For example, a vehicle purchased in 2023 would need a model year of 2021 or older
• Not have already been transferred after August 16, 2022, to a qualified buyer
• Have a gross vehicle weight rating of less than 14,000 pounds
• Be an eligible FCV or plug-in EV with a battery capacity of at least 7 kilowatt hours (kWh)
• Be for use primarily in the United States
• For qualified used EVs, the dealer reports the required information to you at the time of sale and to the IRS
• Purchaser must be an individual (no businesses) to qualify for used credit
• A used vehicle qualifies for tax credit only once in its lifetime

In May 2024, the IRS shared its final rules for the federal tax credit program. The original rules required qualifying vehicles to be assembled in North America alongside gradually higher percentages of battery materials and components to be produced on the continent and in countries with free trade agreements with the US.

Following months of difficulties amongst automakers trying to become compliant to qualify, the US Treasury Department and IRS have relaxed some of those parameters, including the sourcing of graphite, electrolyte salts, binders, and additives… at least until 2027.

This latest news follows an October 2023 update that pertained to the transferring of credits. Per the IRS:

The Internal Revenue Service issued  proposed regulations ,  Revenue Procedure 2023-33  (PDF) and  frequently asked questions  today for the transfer of new and previously owned clean vehicle credits from the taxpayer to an eligible entity for vehicles placed in service after Dec. 31, 2023.

This “transfer” is essentially the ability of a new EV buyer to give the tax credit to the dealer selling them their shiny new EV. In exchange, the dealer can give the equivalent “in cash or in the form of a partial payment or down payment.”

However, all the same eligibility criteria still apply even with a transfer, including the buyer having a federal tax burden.

The buyer must give the dealer all their tax information, which will then be submitted to the IRS. The dealer is not required to verify the information, and therefore, the disclosure falls on the buyer. All the other previous vehicle requirements, like MSRP limits, and for the buyers, like income limit requirements, apply here.

The only requirement that this update allows you to avoid is your tax burden. If, for some reason, you can afford to buy a new car and yet you happen to have a tax burden smaller than the full amount of tax credit you are eligible for, the IRS says that it won’t “recapture” the difference.

Y'all keep reposting this article trying to keep up with the updates to the tax code and I appreciate the desire to be thorough and update old information but I find this format too cumbersome to be helpful. I think it would make more sense to post new articles each time such as "here are the BEVs that qualify AS OF <>".

1) It removes the need to have a section in current article about the old rules that have expired. People can refer to an old article if needed.

2) Because I know the article has been updated many times, I don't feel like I can trust any use of the word "current" in it. I see sentences that say "current" and I have to wonder if that is truly current or if it's an accidental leftover word from when the article was published months ago.

Even ignoring historical guidance, there's too much here. Fuel cell vehicles? BEVs under 7kWh or over 14k lbs? How many people are looking for those/ how useful is it to include this, particularly all lumped into a single article? Maybe that's useful detail but doesn't seem necessary for most consumers.

While I'm on that topic, you can probably split out BEV/ PHEV as separate articles too, because most people aren't cross-shopping them.

Last thought: if it is possible to make a flowchart or an "internet quiz" on whether a car qualifies, that could be very useful. "is it a BEV, PHEV, or fuel cell vehicle..." > "Does it have more than 7kWh battery?"... etc.

In addition to any federal credit you may or may not qualify for, there are a number of clean transportation laws, regulations, and funding opportunities available at the state level.

We’ve compiled every state rebate, tax credit, and exemption for you and sorted it by state. Whether it’s a purchase or lease of a new or used EV or the purchase and installation of an EV charger, you could get money back, depending upon where you live. Here are all those tax credits, rebates, and exemptions sorted by state.

At the federal level, the tax credits for EVs (electric cars, vans, trucks, etc) operate as money back at the end of the fiscal year you purchased or leased your vehicles based on a number of factors. The awarded credit is up to $7,500 per vehicle, but how much you may get back will depend on your annual income, whether you are filing with someone else like a spouse, and what electric vehicle you purchased. For example, if you purchased a Ford F-150 Lightning and owed $3,500 in income tax this year, then that is the federal tax credit you would receive. If you owed $10,000 in federal income tax, then you could qualify for the full $7,500 credit. It’s important to note that any unused portion of the $7,500 is not available as a refund nor as a credit for next year’s taxes. You may also be able to receive money back right away as a point-of-sale credit, but those terms probably won’t kick in until 2024 at the earliest.

As things currently stand, there is a lot up in the air right now. The first table above details all of the electric vehicles that qualify under the terms of the Inflation Reduction Act, including battery guidance. Be sure to check the date at the bottom of each table above to see when it was most recently updated.

As previously mentioned, qualifying terms for electric vehicles became more strict at the start of 2023, and EVs and their battery components must be assembled in North America to qualify. As you can see above, significantly fewer electric vehicles qualify under the new terms, but as time goes on, more and more automakers will adapt their production strategies to operate within North America and start selling vehicles that qualify. American companies like Ford , GM, and Tesla already have EVs that qualify to some extent, but others are sure to follow. We will continually update the list above as we learn more.

Excellent question. Since traditional hybrid vehicles rely primarily on combustion and do not use a plug to charge, they do not qualify for tax credits at the federal level. Credits apply to plug-in electric vehicles which include plug-in hybrid EVs and battery electric vehicles (BEVs).

As of January 1, 2023, qualifying used EVs priced below $25,000 can qualify for up to $4,000 in federal tax credits. Yes. Under the new terms in the Inflation Reduction Act, the MSRP of electric vehicles must be $80,000 or less for SUVs, vans, and trucks. MSRPs for all other electric vehicles must be $55,000 or less.

Modified adjusted gross income limits are $150,000 for individuals, $225,000 for heads of households, and $300,000 for joint returns. Any reported annual income below these thresholds should qualify you for some level of tax credit, as long as your new purchase is a qualifying electric vehicle.
