Special Sea Kayak Tours

Sunshine coast kayak tours.

Sea Kayaking is a ‘fun-tastic’ way to explore and two of British Columbia’s most unique and scenic kayak destinations: Desolation Sound Marine Park and the Copeland Islands Marine Park. Quite often we will be followed by curious seals, playful river otters and sometimes even by an impressive sea lion. With a bit of luck we could encounter a pod of Killer Whales or even a Humpback Whale in Desolation Sound or in the Salish Sea. Throughout the seasons many bird species choose this area to forage or breed. Frequent sightings of bald eagles, various ducks and shore-birds are not uncommon. We focus on SMALL GROUPS and personal attention. Professionally guided, unique kayak tours and lessons in first class, made in BC, kayaks!

Footprint’s Instructors are Paddle Canada Certified. Footprint’s courses are offered in Powell River / Lund and Nanaimo. Whether it your first time in a sea-kayak or whether you have sea-water running through your veins; there’s always a new skill to learn or an old one to brush up on. We focus on small classes and we mostly  work with two seasoned instructors during our Basic-, Level 1- and Level 2 Sea Kayak Courses. Our courses are hands-on and challenging. Blackfish Waters Orca Kayak Tour

Sea kayak with orcas in british columbia.

Kayak with orcas in the Johnstone Strait , the BEST place in the world to observe killer whales as they feed on salmon off northern Vancouver Island. This is the only itinerary to spend 6 days in the heart of the areas where orcas roam, optimizing your chances of special encounters with these magnificent whales. Enjoy full-height canvas tents with sleeping cots in this unique base-camp to base-camp tour.

If you long to kayak with orcas, you've come to the right place.  While some people are content to simply watch whales, sea kayakers yearn to experience them. Maximize your orca experience in the breathtaking scenery of Vancouver Island's inside passage. Here in Johnstone Strait, summer home of the northern resident orcas, paddle whale-rich waters and explore the the marine wonders of their ecosystem.

If weather permits, you'll stay at three different base camps on three different islands on the heart of the orca loop. Full-height canvas tents with sleeping cots await you at each of these wilderness base camps, so you can enjoy the orcas without the hassle of making and breaking camp or hauling a tent. Part of your tour will be spent in Blackfish Sound, home of orcas and a high concentration of humpback whales!

You will depart from Telegraph Cove in Port McNeill while our expert guides showcase the beauty and wildlife of the area. The whales may steal the show, but the Strait holds an entire ecosystem to explore. Peer at sea stars and anemones through crystal clear waters from your kayak, paddling glassy calm coastal inlets and channels in this sheltered wilderness. Learn about orcas from the guides' nature talks and the on-board library while friendly sea lions lounge on outcrops or take to the waves to get a closer look at you. Pass playful dolphins and curious porpoises, whose acrobatic water antics are mirrored by the aerial displays of eagles and sea birds . You will also observe First Nations pictographs, hike through forests filled with Old Growth Cedars, and learn about the aboriginal cultures that inhabited these lands. (If you would like to paddle the Broughton Archipelago, which is near Johnstone Strait but not a haven for orcas, head over to our Broughton tours. )

Green doesn’t mean lean! Camping with Sea Kayak Adventures means "getting away from it all," without "leaving it all behind." Our tours are fully-catered with gourmet meals prepared daily from scratch like our fresh salmon bake, and daily happy hour with wine and hors d’oeuvres. We provide all of the camping and kayaking gear, so you just need to bring your clothing! Sea Kayak Adventures proudly adheres to all Be Whale Wise regulations and is a supporting member of NIMMSA (North Island Marine Mammal Stewardship Association).

Each of our base camps is equipped with pre-assembled, full-height canvas tents and sleeping cots. Enjoy happy hour including local wines and hors d’oeuvres while the guides prepare a special surprise for dinner. MEALS INCLUDED : Lunch, Dinner

Sea Kayak the Johnstone Strait and Blackfish Sound

Awake to the smell of fresh brewed coffee and tea as the sun crests over rainforest boughs. Your guides will be wide awake and hard at work preparing a warm breakfast, but you can relax with a steaming mug of your favorite drink while wandering the beach for tidepools, reading a book, or watching a pod of passing orcas. You will kayak throughout orca territory in Johnstone Strait, and explore the adjacent channels and islands around Blackfish Sound where humpback whales may be spotted. Expect to kayak over four hours per day, broken up by lunch hour and floating rest breaks.

MEALS INCLUDED : Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Robson Bight Orca Preserve, Sea Kayaking, Hiking

You will paddle to Robson Bight Orca Preserve as well as to First Nations pictograph sites on various days of your trip. Orcas can appear at any time on our tour. Killer whales can cover dozens of miles per day and often swim up, down, and around the strait hunting salmon or playing. You can also spot eagles, seals, porpoises or other marine mammals or seabirds at any time. Our guides use hydrophones when the orcas are in view so that you can thrill to the orcas vocalizing to each other underwater! Evenings and dinner will be spent relaxing in camp around a cozy campfire, toasting the day's adventures and listening to the guides spin tales and recount local legends. Orcas blowing offshore makes for a spectacular lullaby.

Telegraph Cove, Whale Museum and Return to Port McNeill

After breakfast and breaking camp, you will spend the day kayaking to our take-out at Telegraph Cove, stopping for lunch along the way and a visit to the Telegraph Cove whale museum. A taxi will return your group to Port McNeill in the afternoon, after unpacking the kayaks. We recommend that you overnight in Port McNeill and join us for a no-host farewell dinner with your group.

Note on Itinerary: We will do our best to adhere to the schedule listed above and visit our base camps on three separate islands. However, the itinerary may change due to reasons beyond our control such as wind, waves or inclement weather. Although there is a very good chance we'll see Orcas throughout the week, the frequency and proximity of sightings will ultimately be determined by the Orcas' travel patterns. Our guides know the best places to see these magnificent creatures.

A Trip of a Lifetime!

This trip is a MUST. I have not been on a ton of trips, but this was the first trip I planned solo. My goal was to get away from the busy life, slow down, and be in God's creation. The kayaking trip was good for the soul. I had hesitations going by myself, but I am glad I did. I met people from my trip all over the world, and we all got along incredibly well. Our guides were amazing - even it being the last trip of the year for them. They went above and beyond...we had lasagna one night on the rocks, just so we could watch the orca and humpback show going on in the bay. We saw wildlife every day as well as orca. I went to bed and woke up to the sounds of orca and humpback...However, I know this is not always the case that you will see as much wildlife as we did, but you never know until you go. I HIGHLY recommend this trip. When I get married, I want to bring my wife back here to do this or bring a bunch of friends. The food (you eat and drink like king and queens in the backcountry), the guides, the people, the wildlife, and the adventure - you cannot beat.

A wonderful wild adventure

I couldn't fault this trip. We saw orcas pretty much every day, humpbacks, bald eagles, dolphins, seals and sealions on multiple days, and loads of other birds. The camps had everything we needed, and were basic (in a good way, feeling very close to nature) but comfortable. The food was excellent, they accommodated our dietary requirements (vegan) expertly. The guides were extremely knowledgeable, friendly and entertaining. They went above and beyond to give us the best possible experience. I would heartily recommend this trip, and SKA generally.

What a fantastic trip!

What a fantastic trip! I cannot recommend Sea Kayaking Adventures highly enough. From the communication, flexibility to the organization and guides - it was absolutely amazing.

Add your review

Faq & more, when is the best time to see whales.

The northern resident pods of orca (killer whales) currently number over 220 individually identified whales in 17 separate pods. They are generally found in Johnstone Strait when salmon, their primary prey, come from the ocean to spawn in the rivers of mainland British Columbia. The whales arrive after about the first week in July, and stay through late September. Our tours are scheduled only during the times when the whales have historically populated the area. Transient killer whales are found in the area beyond this narrow summer window, but are fewer in number and offer infrequent sightings. Humpback whales return from their breeding grounds in Hawaii early summer, and remain through the autumn. Though once hunted to extinction from the area, humpbacks have returned to the area as a tremendous success story, and are almost more common than orcas!

Is there a danger while kayaking near killer whales?

There are no recorded attacks on humans in history from wild orcas. To our knowledge a killer whale has never bumped a kayak or shown any aggression toward kayakers. All whales are acutely aware of their surroundings, and can use echolocation to track objects in their waters. From our many years in Johnstone Strait and hundreds of close encounters with killer whales, we feel very safe being in their presence. Most of the orcas we encounter are strictly salmon-eaters.

Will I definitely get to see the orcas?

Orcas are wild animals free to roam at will, and while we have a very high success rate for seeing orcas in the Robson Bight region, we cannot guarantee a sighting. To increase your opportunities for seeing the orcas, or simply to enjoy even more whale watching, you might want to add an extra day to your vacation to go on a Stubb's Island Whale Watching trip that is operated by motor skiff. Their motorized boat allows them to cover more ground in search of orcas and humpbacks throughout the Johnstone Strait area.

How do I get to Port McNeill?

The easiest way to get to Port McNeill by air, is to fly through Vancouver International Airport (airport code YVR) to Port Hardy, BC (airport code YZT). From Vancouver International's South Terminal you can catch a flight on Pacific Coastal Airlines direct to Port Hardy. Once in Port Hardy, it's a 35-40 minute taxi ride to Port McNeill. If arriving from outside of Canada, be sure to give yourself 1.5-2 hours between your arriving flight at Vancouver International and your departing flight from the South Terminal to Port Hardy, as you will have to clear customs and take a 15 minute shuttle from the International Terminal to the South Terminal (there are signs to guide you). Port McNeill is also accessible by car, via a beautiful drive following BC Route 19 from Nanaimo to Port McNeill. Vancouver Island can be reached from the Canadian or U.S. mainlands by utilizing one of multiple ferry crossings from the Vancouver metro or greater Seattle areas. The BC Ferries and Washington State DOT Ferry websites are very helpful resources if you are planning to drive to Northern Vancouver Island. For more information on getting to Port McNeill, please see here.

How do I get from Port Hardy to Port McNeill?

If you fly into Port Hardy, you will need to arrange a taxi for the 35-minute drive South to Port McNeill. You can expect to pay about $45-60 CAD for the one-way fare, however rates do vary. We recommend sharing the ride with other members of the tour if you meet one another on the plane (or are on the same flight when departing). It's best to bring cash to pay the driver. For more information on getting to Port McNeill, please see here.

Where do I stay before and after my tour?

We recommend the Black Bear Resort for accomodations as this is where we will meet the night before your schedualed activities. All hotels on northern Vancouver Island fill well in advance for summer, so wherever you choose to stay, we recommend making reservations early. Please note, hotel nights before and after the tour are not included in your tour cost. There are plenty of things to see and do in Port McNeill and Port Hardy if you choose to extend your stay.

What if I don't get to see Orcas?

You can always extend your trip through our friends at Stubbs Island Whale Watching or Mackay Whale Watching tours. Both are experienced operators located on Northern Vancouver Island. Whale watching by boat will allow you to quickly move to areas where sightings are reported, increasing your changes of seeing whales.

Can I paddle a single kayak?

We have single kayaks available to reserve and use throughout the trip (for an additional cost of $100) for paddlers who have previous ocean paddling experience. If you would like to reserve a single kayak for your trip you will need to contact our Adventure Consultants to add this to your reservation and provide a summary of your ocean paddling experience.

How close can we get to Orcas?

For all of our British Columbia kayaking tours, we follow "Be Whale Wise" regulations for the protection of the whales. According to the regulations, viewers must stay 200 yards/meters or more away from Orcas. We are very privileged to have the opportunity to observe these incredible creatures from close vantage points. The survival of the Orca, depends on everyone's cooperation with the "Be Whale Wise" and other responsible whale watching regulations. Occasionally, because orcas are much faster than us while in a kayak, they approach us much closer than the above guidelines. That said, many of our closest encounters have been from land, as the whales often come within meters of the shoreline! Understanding the behavior and range of the Orcas helps to better-set your expectations for your Orca kayak tour. Feel free to explore www.BeWhaleWise.org to read more about these regulations.

Which trip is right for me? The 4-day or 6-day Orca kayaking trips?

The four-day trip utilizes one campsite for all four days. You have more time to relax and enjoy the beautiful wildlife and scenery. Families with teens, novice kayakers, or those who prefer a slower pace would be ideal for this tour. The campsite we use on the Vancouver Island side of Johnstone Strait, by exclusive permit, is close to Robson Bight. The base camp's shoreline is composed of sea-polished stones that lure an orca to rub its 6-ton body along the beach, or herd salmon into the curve of the shore. Orcas regularly pass by directly in front of camp. Paddlers can scramble down the rock outcropping and stand at water's edge to watch orcas cruise by just below their feet. The camp offers great orca viewing right off shore. We never just "wait around for orcas" on the base camp. We take daily day trips, paddling to different beaches for lunch, hike, observing wildlife. Each trip includes about 4 hours per day of kayaking: two hours paddling in morning, and another two hours paddling in the afternoon after lunch. Often there is a hike at the lunch stop, and the evenings are filled with campfires, games, or fishing. On the 6-day tour, you'll enjoy 2-3 different sites (including the aforementioned basecamp) that are located along the travel routes used by the orcas. Given this loop route and the length of the trip, you are likely to see more wilderness areas and a more diverse selection of marine life. For instance, the six-day tour includes a visit to an area that's frequented by humpback whales. You will also have a chance to explore First Nations pictograph areas, and the base of the Broughton Archipelago, while remaining firmly in whale waters.

Can you recommend a taxi company from Port Hardy to Port Mc Neill?

If you fly into Port Hardy, you will need to arrange a taxi for the 35-minute drive South to Port McNeill. You can expect to pay about $45-60 CAD for the one-way fare, however rates do vary. We recommend sharing the ride with other members of the tour if you meet one another on the plane (or are on the same flight when departing). Please bring cash to pay the driver. The taxi companies change regularly, but we recommend Waivin Flags Taxi, 1-250-230-7655 and Town Taxi 1-250-949-7877 on the North Island.

What kind of footwear should I bring on my BC tour?

We recommend that you bring (2) pairs of shoes on your BC trip. Packing light for your adventure in the Johnstone Straight is highly recommended and from our experience you really only need 2 good pairs of footwear for your tour. We will supply you with a pair of neoprene booties for the duration of your kayaking tour. In addition to those booties we recommend you bring:

□ One pair sturdy trail shoes, or running shoes, to use for hiking and around camp □ One pair sandals with ankle straps to wear while kayaking, on the beaches, walking around camp, etc. (Chaco, Keens or Crocs are preferred but there are many other brands that are suitable)

Will there be a portable charging station provided on the tour?

We do not carry a portable charging station for the group. You may opt to bring your own small portable charger to charge your phone, camera, headlamp, etc.

Kayaking the Great Bear Rainforest

The Great Bear Rainforest, on the central coast of BC, is part of the largest remaining temperate rainforest in the world. On this trip we'll head to the outer coast to explore that wind- and wave-tossed fringe that exemplifies the coastal wilderness of British Columbia. Remote beaches, whales, sea otters, wolf tracks in the sand, undeveloped campsites. A self-supported sea kayaking expedition to the Great Bear Rainforest is perfect for satisfying your need to get away from it all.

ENTER THE WILD CENTRAL COAST WITH US

This tour offers you a chance to paddle one of the most unique kayak routes in North America. It combines travel through an area teeming with wildlife along with excellent paddling amongst the beautiful outer islands of the Great Bear Rainforest. This trip takes place in the traditional territory of the Heiltsuk First Nation.

We start and end this tour in the Heiltsuk community of Bella Bella, located on the Central Coast of BC (a 2.5-hour flight from Vancouver). The Great Bear Rainforest is the largest intact temperate rainforest in the world which means camping amongst giant Sitka spruce trees, ancient red cedars and western hemlocks that are nothing short of awe-inspiring. The area’s cold water and great tidal exchanges – not to mention healthy kelp forests – provide ample oxygen to support an incredible diversity of sea life from tiny shore creatures to majestic whales, dolphins, and porpoises.

This tour aims to help you experience the best and most beautiful parts of the Hakai Lúxvbálís Conservancy by kayak. Bella Bella is a great location for starting our journey and from here we explore the intricate shoreline, beautiful long beaches, and windswept islands making our way towards Calvert Island. The water taxi transport back to Bella Bella on our last tour day means we see somewhere new and different every day of our journey, making the most of your time in the Great Bear Rainforest.

WHAT MAKES THIS TOUR SO UNIQUE?

Explore somewhere new each day! The Great Bear Rainforest area includes too many amazing places to explore in one trip – but in order to make the most of your time here we make use of a water taxi shuttle as part of our tour so we don’t need to spend time backtracking. This also allows us to get off the beaten track exploring some of the more remote areas and islands (weather and group permitting of course).

CAMPING AMONG STUNNING ISLANDS

There are so many beautiful places to stay you will be hard pressed to choose a favourite campsite. Each site has unique attributes either tucked in amongst towering forests, atop ancient village sites or overlooking wildlife rich waters. This is a true expedition style trip, which means we will move from camp to camp each day.

Great Bear Rainforest Sea Kayaking

THE PADDLING

We will traverse both the relatively open waters of Hakai Passage, Kildidt Sound as well as the more protected islands of the islets in one of the most stunning seascapes around. This area has been featured in many documentaries and publications and is part of one of the largest protected areas on the coast because of its stunning beauty.

The Great Bear Rainforest Outer Islands Expedition starts and ends in Bella Bella on the Central Coast of British Columbia. The details below should help give you a fuller picture of the day-to-day trip experience.

DAY PRIOR to your Kayak Tour

Traveling to bella bella on the central coast.

Pacific Coastal Airlines offers flights from Vancouver or from Port Hardy on Vancouver Island to Bella Bella.

BC Ferries also has regular departures from Port Hardy to Bella Bella on the Discovery Coast Connector route. Leave Port Hardy at 7:30am the day before your kayaking tour to arrive in Bella Bella at 1:05pm the same day, giving you a few hours to explore before meeting your guides at the pre-trip meeting at 6pm. Please note: If you are traveling to Bella Bella by ferry you will likely need to spend the night before in Port Hardy given the early morning ferry departure.

On the day following your tour, the return ferry to Port Hardy departs Bella Bella at 6:10pm and arrives in Port Hardy at 11:30pm. Ferry reservations are highly recommended. (Times accurate at the time of publication – please double-check before planning your onward travel).

Pre-tRIP MEETING LOCATION: Fisherman’s Bar & Grill at shearwater resort on Denny island, 6pm

Your guides will welcome you to the central coast and give you an overview of the trip, answering any last-minute questions and making sure everyone is prepared for the trip. You’ll receive your dry bags and any other requested gear items so you may pack your bags in preparation for departing in the morning. Shearwater Resort on Denny Island is only a short seabus ride away from Bella Bella.

This is the proposed itinerary for our trip, but it is flexible and may be adapted to suit the interests of those who join the trip as well as weather conditions. On this tour, we can expect a combination of exposed open coastline and more protected inner passageways. As this is an expedition-style tour, we usually move campsites each night. We may have an opportunity to stay in the same place for two nights if conditions allow.

MEETING LOCATION: Top of the government dock in downtown Bella Bella, 9am

Meet your guides in Bella Bella in the heart of BC’s Central Coast. We will meet in central Bella Bella at the government dock. After an introduction to the area and Heiltsuk First Nation with a cultural interpreter, we will sort our gear and then set off on our water taxi for the shuttle out to our first campsite. Once there, we will sort out gear and prepare for our adventure, beginning with an orientation to the kayaks and gear, learning efficient paddling techniques and safety procedures. Once everyone is comfortable with their boats we’ll launch for our first strokes in the Great Bear Sea.

Ocean kayaks in a rocky kelp filled cove in the Great Bear Rainforest region.

DAYS 2 to 7

This is a beautiful area to paddle and we work with the conditions and remain open to adventure. Each day, your guides will assess the weather, tides, and sea state to determine the destination for the day. Flexibility is key. Depending on the weather and exact drop-off location, we may plan to paddle the remote Goose Group Islands (weather depending), McMullins and Tribal Group. Moving southeast we’ll enter the spectacular islands and beaches of the Hakai Conservancy, continuing in the direction of Calvert Island.

We will meet a water taxi about mid-day for transport back to Bella Bella. We expect to arrive in Bella Bella by mid-late afternoon, allowing us time to relax in the village before heading south by air or ferry the following day. Please do not book any flights for the last day of your trip.

Below is a list of commonly asked questions. If you have any further questions or concerns please do not hesitate to call us.

+ WHAT MAKES OUR GREAT BEAR RAINFOREST EXPEDITION SPECIAL?

The Great Bear Rainforest is the most adventurous trip we operate in British Columbia. For eight days, you’ll travel through an area teeming with wildlife amongst the beautiful wind-swept outer islands of the Great Bear Rainforest. This region is a part of the largest intact temperate rainforest in the world, giving you a sense of what forests were like in times past.

This trip is based from the village of Bella Bella in the heart of British Columbia’s Central Coast. We make use of a water taxi to access the outer islands at the beginning of the trip, travel through the islands for 8 days, then take a water taxi back to Bella Bella on the last day providing unparalleled access to this stunning place. This tour is suitable for folks with previous paddling and camping experience only.

+ WHAT ARE CAMPSITES IN THE GREAT BEAR RAINFOREST LIKE?

On our Great Bear Rainforest expedition, we are often camping along the stunning windswept beaches that the central coast of BC is known for. Campsites are all undeveloped and may be clearings in the woods or on the beach above the high tide line.

While this tour takes place in a more remote location, there may be times (on occasion) when we are camping in the vicinity of other paddlers. Campsite choice will be based on route options, weather and sea state conditions, and group size.

+ AM I EXPERIENCED ENOUGH FOR THIS EXPEDITION? HOW LONG ARE THE PADDLING DAYS?

The area we are paddling in is very remote and can present challenging weather conditions with wind and rain. There are some open water crossings with ocean swell and the possibility of light surf landings. Your guides will exercise conservative judgement when planning the daily routes and will adjust to suit the needs of the group and the weather/water conditions.

While some paddling and outdoor experience is helpful, you don’t need to be an expert kayaker. Your guides will teach a review lesson on efficient paddling techniques and rescue procedures. Your guides will also offer coaching throughout the trip. Please indicate your paddling/outdoor experience in the “Other Notes” section when you book your tour and if you have questions about if this tour is suitable for you, contact us.

Paddling time will depend on each individual trip, our daily destination, weather and sea state conditions, and the group’s overall abilities. Generally, we travel between 5-7 hours a day (between 8-12 nautical miles/day, occasionally shorter or longer depending on the weather, with one longer day of up to 15-18 nautical miles) on our expedition-style trips, not including breaks and lunch. We set a pace which is pleasant and achievable for all guests.

+ WILL WE HAVE ACCESS TO SHOWERS AND TOILETS?

There is minimal fresh water to be found throughout the outer islands on this tour. Therefore, salt water is your best bet for freshening up. Personal wet wipes are also a great addition in this setting! Please only bring earth-friendly and biodegradable soap and shampoo .

Bathroom facilities are not common in most wilderness settings, especially in this area. Your guides carry a portable toilet system to be used throughout the trip. We always designate an area that works for ensuring everyone’s privacy. We are very familiar with making sure all of our guests feel comfortable and informed – please feel free to contact our office with any questions you might have regarding this matter.

+ WHERE SHOULD WE STAY IN BELLA BELLA? IS ACCOMMODATION INCLUDED?

There are very limited lodging options in the Bella Bella area and we recommend staying at the Shearwater Resort which is owned and operated by the Heiltsuk Nation and is a short sea bus ride away on Denny Island ($5-10/person, cash only). This is the location of the pre-trip meeting and where our guides and most guests stay. We have found the easiest way to book with Shearwater is through their online booking form .

Pre-booking accommodation for the night before and after your tour is key to an optimal travel experience. Due to the remote nature of where we operate, immediate onward travel upon your return is not recommended due to the slight possibility of delays due to weather or sea state.

This accommodation for night prior to tour departure and the day of our return is not included in the tour costs and should be reserved as soon as your tour is confirmed to ensure you secure a place to stay.

+ WHERE IS THE MEETING POINT TO START THIS TRIP?

Pre-trip meeting location: Fisherman’s Bar & Grill at Shearwater Resort  on Denny Island at 6 pm the day prior to your tour departure (day before your tour)

Tour meeting location: Top of the government dock in downtown Bella Bella at 9 am (Day 1)

Our adventure begins from the town of Bella Bella on the central coast of British Columbia. Please arrive 20 minutes early to allow time to unload, carry your luggage down to the launching spot, and arrange parking (if necessary) to leave your vehicle for the duration of your tour.

THE EXPERIENCE

"Because Mother Nature is so amazing, my trip was amazing. You had me at the ocean, weather (any will do), trees, wind in my face… Highlights of the trip were lagoon exploring, kayak sailing, and morning tidal walks. Laughter, and tasty meals."

"Another awesome Spirit of the West trip! Food, guides, and equipment were all top notch. I loved the opportunity to paddle in more challenging water given that we had a group of strong paddlers."

“Everything about this trip was exceptional. The highlight for me was our two guides - the complimentary soft and hard skills as well as the empathy and enthusiasm that they bring to their work. Brandon was a fountain of knowledge about intertidal life and really opened my eyes to what this exquisite part of nature has to offer. His gentle and respectful nature made one feel well cared for and safe. As well as his humor and giggles. I can’t thank the guides enough for all they contributed to my experience.”

“The morning in Bella Bella with a talk with Frank was amazing, enlightening and informative. The cultural center is a must see; an artist happened to be on hand and provided info to us as well. It was an important reminder we are in Heiltsuk territory.”

“Overall experience was great. Highlights - crossing in swells, stops to admire surroundings, guides knowledge and sharing of charting, marine life and paddling supports. Meals were well organized, healthy, well prepared and well presented. Guides work very hard, morning to sundown - Impressive! Great problem solvers and accommodated guests.”

“Great bear expedition is a must for serious kayaker. 8 days in the Great Bear Rainforest (Hakai Conservancy) are about as close to west coast kayaking heaven as one could get. This was an amazing opportunity to kayak in this wild and magical land. As usual, the SOW arrangements for food and equipment were excellent. Wind, rain, ocean swells, beach camping are all part of the challenging fun."

"We really enjoyed the SoW kayak trip in the Hakai area of the Great Bear Rainforest. This region is so remote and unique, it was a real opportunity to visit there. The white sandy beaches, big crossings and canal-like channels were amazing. This is our fifth trip with Spirit of the West and all of them have been great. The routes, the guides and the food are excellent."

“Amazing, wonderful, fabulous ... we can't say enough about our adventure”

"The guides were fantastic, the communication before the trip was great. Everything was well organised. I can't fault anything. A highly recommended trip and company to do it with."

"One of the best experiences of my life , very professional guides , amazing food and a brilliant trip , well done Spirit of the West Adventure."

"Great campsites in very remote places in between a lot of wildlife. We were just spoiled of good kayak equipment and the best guides you could imagine who made the best food after a nice day kayaking. Everything was so very well organised and planed! Thank you..."

A Commitment to Environmental Protection

Kayaking the west coast means protecting the west coast. Ocean kayaking relies on clean oceans, healthy ecosystems, and partnerships with environmental stewards to make what we do possible. Take only memories, leave only footprints.

Hello Nature Adventure Tours has signed the Sustainable Tourism 2030 Pledge , to demonstrate our commitment to improving the sustainability performance of our business between now and 2030.

The UN World Tourism Organization defines sustainable tourism as “tourism that takes full account of its current and future economic, social and environmental impacts, addressing the needs of visitors, the industry, the environment and host communities.”

Each year, we commit to measuring and improving our sustainability performance in the following ways:

increasing the amount of beach clean ups we offer every year by converting our day trip into an adventure with a purpose; supporting our community with subsidized youth programs; tracking and reducing our water and electricity usage; promote our leave no trace ethics; educate our guest about the local environment and culture; build meaningful partnerships with local communities and take measurable steps towards reconciliation.

Low Impact Wildlife Watching Tours

Wildlife viewing by kayak provides remarkable opportunities to quietly watch, observe, and witness the breathtaking beauty of animals in their natural habitat.

The team behind Hello Nature Adventure Tours has spent decades building up knowledge, learning the patterns and habits of the wildlife, and practicing responsible tourism through kayak touring to ensure we keep our wildlife safe and happy in our waters.

Sustainable Tourism for the Future

Responsible tourism is the key to a healthy ocean ecosystem. These groups include Surfrider Pacific Rim , Raincoast Education Society , and Clayoquot Action .

Through beach cleans, wildlife guidelines and low impact standards – each destination visited must be left better than we found it.

Kayak rentals

Multi-day tours, welcome to paddle west kayaking.

Kayaking on Vancouver Island with Paddle West offers you an experience of the west coast that is truly unforgettable! Our kayak tours out of Tofino and Ucluelet BC allow you to enjoy the beautiful surroundings of Clayoquot and Barkley Sound, while getting up close and personal with the nature and wildlife that has made the west coast of Vancouver Island one of the worlds premiere kayaking destinations.

Operating out of two waterfront locations in both Tofino (Clayoquot Sound) and Ucluelet (Barkley Sound), Paddle West Kayaking offers a series of professionally guided kayak Day Tours, Multi-day Tours as well as kayak rentals and customized overnight tours designed for everyone from beginners to veteran paddlers.

Best Paddle Experience Yet!

We did a multi day paddle out of Tofino. Everything surpassed my expectations! The food with delicious, healthy, fresh and lots of variety and some of the best desserts I’ve had on a paddle trip. Both our guides were professional, personable and went above and beyond to make sure our group was having a great experience. PaddleWest equipment was also top notch making it all that much more enjoyable. From the initial contact with Ryan at Paddle West to the final day on the water it all went like a dream. I can’t recommend Ryan and Paddle West highly enough. And you are in the most beautiful area of the world. . .

Kayak trip to Meares Island rainforest – pure magic!

We joined the Meares Island Rainforest tour and went sea kayaking from Tofino. There were 360-degree views of snowcapped mountains, green-blue waters, ancient forests, colorful boats and islands dotting the landscape. Eagles were soaring high above and seals playing and splashing nearby. Landing the kayaks at Meares Island, we walked through the rainforest on a raised boardwalk, listening to stories about the land and history, checking out salamander eggs and gawking at the giant cedar trees all around us. It was pure magic! We’d never sea kayaked before and found it was really easy to learn, and had a great time.

Great Experience in Clayoquot

We had a wonderful time paddling in Tofino. We rented two doubles from Paddle West Kayaking, along with all the gear. The boats were in great condition and the gear was organized in a very thoughtful and useful manner. For example, a survival kit in a dry bag had been prepared ahead of time, and the owner of the company went through everything with us prior to launch. We were able to rent a VHF radio, too. We have rented boats from other outfitters, but PWK went that extra mile!

Fantastic Paddling on Vancouver Island

My wife and I had the good luck to join Paddle West for (separate) day paddles to Barkley Sound and to Vargas Island. Both six-hour tours provide the chance to paddle in pristine locations along the coast of British Colombia. Our guides were super knowledgeable and fun while being attentive to the safety of the group. All in all, these tours are among the best day paddles we’ve ever experienced.

British Columbia Sea Kayaking Tours

We Offer Sea Kayaking Tours to Three Unique Paddling Destinations

Broughton Archipelago & JoHnstone Strait

Great Bear Rainforest Kayaking

Desolation Sound Kayaking

Multi-day Sea Kayaking Tours to Areas Rarely Visited by Other Paddlers.

From Desolation Sound to the Great Bear Rainforest, glacial fed rivers spill into lush salmon spawning estuaries at the heads of magnificent steep sided fjords. Hundreds of islets and islands provide sheltered travel from the open ocean and habitat for a vast array of marine life. Orcas, humpback whales, sea lions, dolphins, sea otters, black bears, spirit bears, grizzly bears, wolves, eagles and seabirds all inhabit this temperate coastal rainforest and the waters of its rugged Pacific shores.

These coastal waters are the supernatural paradise the Columbia III has safely traveled since 1956 !

A day in the life during our Sea Kayaking Tours

A typical day on one of our sea kayaking tours starts with the guests gathering on the back deck after breakfast. Water bottles are filled, dry bags are packed with cameras, sunscreen and a spare sweater, and spray skirts are pulled on. A guide assists each person into their kayak and soon everyone is on the water. The mothership sounds its whistle goodbye and heads off to the afternoon meeting place while the paddlers settle into their rhythms, anticipating the day’s journey ahead.

With the kayak’s minimal draft, we’ll float over shallows profuse with intertidal creatures. We’ll glide along cliffs just inches away from clusters of starfish and anemones. From the intimate vantage of your kayak perhaps you’ll surprise a seal dozing in the sun, or pause as an eagle swoops for a salmon. After the morning’s paddle we’ll land on a shell beach or rocky islet for a leisurely picnic lunch before continuing on in the afternoon. We’ll watch in awe as orcas pass by, or perhaps glimpse a bear on the beach.

COLUMBIA III awaits your return each evening in a new location. No backtracking necessary! By taking a kayaking tour with the mothership, you will explore and paddle in new landscapes every day. We are not limited to areas with natural campsites; we simply drop the anchor! This means we can paddle in the more remote, steep and rugged parts of the coast, where other kayakers rarely venture. The COLUMBIA III is always within radio range of the guides and available in the unlikely event of an emergency. Safety is always our first consideration. Our goal is to provide you with attentive service, a spotless ship, a warm family atmosphere and a fantastic kayaking experience during your mothership adventure.

After the day’s paddling, guests come back aboard, kayaks are settled and secured into their places on the roof, and we’re off to our next anchorage. It’s very luxurious to enjoy a hot shower, great food and a warm bed after a day exploring the wilderness! There are no tents to set up, and if the weather turns foul we have a cozy environment – dry and heated. Our fully equipped galley turns out dishes with a west coast flavour and our guest book raves about the vessel and the hospitality shown by her crew.

“Thank you for sharing yourselves, your country and this wonderful ship with us. There were so many highlights: from the First Nations People, the amazing scenery and seeing so many animals in the wild! Two standouts were the orca fest feeding on the salmon and the raft of sea otters. I cannot tell you how wonderful it was to return to the COLUMBIA III after a day’s kayaking, to a dry deck, a drink, great food, and a comfortable bed gently rocked to sleep by the motion of the waves. Good luck for the future! We hope to see you again.”

TESTIMONIALS

Over the years, we've provided ‘trips of a lifetime’ for countless travellers from around the world. See what our past guests have to say about their experiences with us.

“You are the perfect crew. I was told that the Mothership experience was to be lived. I’m so glad I did and fortunate that I have been part of this journey. I came out of this trip far more knowledgeable and appreciative of our country and culture. You have such warmth and attention to detail that the trip was so seamless. You are a great and dedicated team. Thank you for your generous sharing and flexibility. The food, wildlife and kayaking are and will be fond memories along with the opportunity of meeting great people.”

– Nicole , ON, Canada. 2012

“Coming back after 7 years was a really great experience. This was a fabulous trip again. Thanks to Ross and the whole crew!”

– Bernd, Jon, Sven and Sabine , Germany 2007, 2014

“This has been a magical trip, we have enjoyed everything! Thank you for your wonderful hospitality on this comfortable ship.”

– Dan & Lynne , British Columbia. Broughton Archipelago 2010, Great Bear Rainforest 2012

“First time in this part of BC. First time kayaking tourer. Got upgraded from absolute newbie to novice during the trip! Not bad for an old desert rat! The food was absolutely fabulous! You are a great crew . . you were almost like friends I hadn’t met before, rather than a ‘company crew’. Hope to see you next fall for the ‘Great Bear Rainforest’ paddling trip.”

– Howard , 2008

“Thank you so much for your welcoming and generous hospitality! And for your caring thoughtfulness in looking after us so well – especially on the water. I was able to meet challenges I wasn’t sure I could achieve. Great personal growth in my kayaking skills. A wonderful adventure! I wish you all the very best.”

– Claudia , Ottawa, Ontario 2018

“We had such a wonderful time. Thank you for sharing yourselves, your country and this wonderful ship with us. There were so many highlights: from the First Nations People, the amazing scenery and seeing so many animals in the wild! Two standouts were the orca fest feeding on the salmon and the raft of otters. We have had a great sense of family with you and the fellow travellers. I cannot tell you how wonderful it was to come back to the COLUMBIA III after a day’s kayaking, to a dry deck, a drink, great food and a comfortable bed gently rocked to sleep by the motion of the waves. Good luck for the future! We hope to see you again.”

Johnstone Strait Orca Kayaking Tour

Johnstone straight sea kayaking and whale watching.

Enjoy an unforgettable six days in the heart of orca territory on this kayaking tour through the Johnstone Strait. These immense creatures come to feed on salmon off the northern coast of Vancouver Island, which is home to some of the most spectacular scenery in British Columbia.

Spend your days paddling through the tranquil coastal inlets and channels of this sheltered wilderness, which provides habitat for not only orcas but also porpoises and sea lions. Hike through forests of old-growth cedars and witness First Nations pictographs while learning about the indigenous cultures that inhabited the region. In the evening, you’ll be treated to unforgettable sunsets with a glass of wine in hand as your guides prepare delicious meals over the campfire.

This tour is perfect for families with teens or novice kayakers and is conducted with our “leave no trace” policy. Our Orcas Basecamp is eco-friendly and tours include all camping and kayaking gear, including fiberglass Seaward Southwind kayaks and easy-to-assemble tents. All of our tours are fully-catered with gourmet meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner) and include daily happy hours.

Travel to Port McNeill + Evening Orientation Meeting

Begin your adventure in Port McNeill, a working fishing village that lies on the north coast of Vancouver Island. Most of our guests opt to stay at the Haida Way Motor Inn on the night before the tour officially begins. Your guides will host an orientation meeting at the hotel in the evening where you’ll meet your fellow travelers and can pick up your wetsuit booties and dry bags.

ACCOMMODATION : Haida Way Motor Inn or Black Bear Resort

MEALS INCLUDED : NA

Transport to Telegraph Cove + Kayak to Base Camp

Early in the morning, you’ll be transported to our kayak launch site in the nearby town of Telegraph Cove where your guides will conduct a safety briefing and provide paddling tips. Once you’re feeling comfortable and confident about being in the water, we’ll launch into the thickly forested and sheltered waters of the Johnstone Strait. This is the heart of orca territory and home to the world’s only designated orca preserve.

Depending on the weather, we will be staying at wilderness basecamps on three different islands, each of which is equipped with pre-assembled tents and sleeping cots. On arrival at camp, take the time to settle in and relax with a glass of local wine and hors d’oeuvres as your guides prepare a delicious dinner. The rest of the evening will be spent around the crackling campfire and gazing up at the starlit sky or the glowing bioluminescence in the water.

ACCOMMODATION : Camping

MEALS INCLUDED : Lunch, Dinner

Sea Kayak the Johnstone Strait and Blackfish Sound

Wake to the smell of freshly-brewed coffee and tea as the sun slowly rises, followed by a warm breakfast prepared by your guides. As you’re waiting for the rest of the group to get ready, you can stroll along the beach and fossick in the tide pools or relax with a book while watching a pod of passing orcas.

Our kayaking excursions over the next two days will take us into the Johnstone Strait’s prime orca territory and through the magnificent channels and islands of Blackfish Sound where humpback whales are occasionally spotted. You can expect to kayak for around 4+ hours each day, with plenty of floating rests and lunch stops.

MEALS INCLUDED : Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Robson Bight Orca Preserve + Sea Kayaking + Hiking

Over the next two days, you will venture to the Robson Bight Orca Preserve and visit several First Nations pictograph sites that dot the region. We’ll be continually keeping our eyes peeled for orcas as they swim through the strait hunting salmon and your guides are equipped with hydrophones so you can hear them vocalizing to one another beneath the water. Seals and porpoises may also be spotted on our daily excursions, together with a variety of birdlife that includes soaring eagles. Each evening we’ll settle in at the campsite to toast the day’s adventures and hear tales from your guides recounting local legends.

Telegraph Cove + Whale Museum + Return to Port McNeill

After your final breakfast at camp, we’ll begin our paddle back to Telegraph Cove, with a stop for lunch along the way. You’ll have the opportunity to visit the Whale Museum Interpretation Centre in Telegraph Cove before being transported to Port McNeill in the afternoon. It’s recommended that you spend an additional night in Port McNeill, which enables you to enjoy a farewell dinner with your group.

Please Note : The above itinerary is dependent upon the wind, waves, and weather and is subject to change at short notice. Basecamp tours are run back-to-back and you may be able to take a water taxi to and from the basecamp, depending upon the schedule.    Although there is a very good chance of spotting orcas during the trip, the frequency and proximity of sightings are dependent on their travel patterns.

ACCOMMODATION : Haida-Way motor Inn or Black Bear Resort

MEALS INCLUDED : Breakfast, Lunch

North Island Kayak would like to acknowledge that we operate on the traditional territories of the Kwakwa̱ka̱ʼwakw tribes. We are aware that the adventure tourism industry which drives our passion for the outdoors could not happen without the use of the land and water that we camp, paddle and recreate on. North Island Kayak would like to acknowledge that our tours operate on a vast array of areas from what we know today as Telegraph Cove to the Broughton Archipelagos and the many islands between Vancouver Island and the coast of the mainland. The traditional territories we frequent the most include but not limited to; the ʼNa̱mǥis, Kwaguʼł, Mama̱liliḵa̱la, Dzawada̱ʼenux̱w, Ḵwikwa̱sutinux̱, & Ławitʼsis.

To learn more about the traditional peoples and the history of this land you will recreate on while touring with North Island Kayak, we recommend designating time to visit The Village of Alert Bay, and the U’mista Cultural Centre.

Our Mad Skillz

My husband and I enjoyed a fantastic introduction to sea kayaking this afternoon with a patient and encouraging guide. This is a great way to get a different view of Victoria and get up close to the aquatic wildlife (we saw seals, heron, otters and jelly fish…oh my!).
Great guide and a fantastic trip to seal island. Lots of things to see including a seal that swam over to say hello!
Had an awesome trip today at an amazing price. Joanna is awesome and knowledgeable, and made me feel right at home. Spent 2 1/2 hours out on the water in beautiful weather, would fully recommend to anyone!
Wonderful experience paddling with my 8 year old son for his birthday. Not sure how but they managed to make the sun shine on a rainy day. ;) Our guide took the time to make the trip fun, easy and educational. It was worth every penny!
Absolutely lovely, knowledgeable, friendly guides….stunning scenery and wildlife….accessible and inclusive for small children! We’ve been twice and we’ll be back!
The dock rats set us up right, with cheap water and borrowed hats and personal floatation devices that, while not all that personal, actually fit properly! They also provided excellent instruction on how to have fun yet not get chopped to pieces by nearby sea planes. Thanks a million for a wonderful time!
Loved starting my morning with a 7AM row out to Seal Island! This is an activity that a newbie can do alongside someone more experienced & both can have a great time. Try it!

Why choose Victoria Kayak for your Tour or Rental?

Convenient location.

Our convenient location near the Empress Hotel and the British Columbia Legislature means you are off to a historic start the moment you push off the dock.

Our kayak tours and rentals start and finish at our Main Office and floating docks on the Miners Landing Pier – right beside Red Fish Blue Fish … a must for visitors and locals alike.

Close to nature

Marine wildlife.

W e are not your average kayak joint!  Despite our outward web appearances we are stuffy Colonists with very little sense of humour.   And be forewarned, it is possible you may be paired with a French Canadian that just might hold a grudge.  If that happens, we suggest discussing Poutine and the poor winter driving skills of British Columbians.   Yup – that’s us in a nutshell.  How’s that for a WOW factor?

O ur kayaking tours & rentals take advantage of the stability of easy to paddle, ocean going kayaks. You will be outfitted in a life jacket (PFD) and given a thorough safety briefing and paddling instruction before departure from our “practice area” adjacent to our dock. Our outstanding location means that when the weather in the outer harbour is rough we can switch directions and proceed deeper into the sheltered waterways of the inner harbour and historic Gorge waterway.

W e are a locally owned and operated family business and every customer is important to us. We need you! Your patronage supports our community and our local suppliers. By choosing to support locally owned businesses, you help maintain Victoria’s diversity and distinctive flavour. Thank you.

Victoria Kayak respectfully acknowledges the Esquimalt and Songhees Nations, on whose traditional territories we live, work, and play.

How to get a launch permit and other questions answered about kayaking in Bucks County

bc kayaking tours

Spring is finally upon us with summer close behind.

And as things warm up, it’s the perfect time to explore the scenic waterways of Bucks County.

Whether you’re new to kayaking canoeing or paddleboarding — or simply need a refresher — here are a few things to help put you on the path to smooth waters:

Do I need a boat registration or launch permit in PA and Bucks County ?

Yes, but what you need depends on where you go…

If you plan to launch from a Pennsylvania state park or forest, such as Nockamixon State Park, all kayaks and canoes must display one of the following:

  • Boat registration from the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission ;
  • Launching permit from the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission, which can be applied for online at huntfish.pa.gov ;
  • Or a Pennsylvania state park launching permit or mooring permit, which is available in-person at most state park offices.

If you’re heading out to a county-owned park or launch access, then you’ll need an additional Bucks County launch permit, which can be purchased online or in-person at one of the county boat rental facilities at Core Creek Park in Middletown or Peace Valley Park in New Britain.

How do I stay safe while out on the water?

The Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources recommends:

  • Have a float plan by telling someone where you’re going, how long you expect to be out and what time you’ll be back.
  • Check the weather for possible thunderstorms and dress for the temps in lightweight quick-drying layers.
  • Wear a properly fitted personal floatation device with an emergency whistle.
  • Bring a dry bag to store items you want to bring along, including water, snacks, sunblock, bug spray, medication, extra clothing and a first aid kit. If you have room, you may also want to pack are a bilge pump, flashlight and sunglasses.
  • Children 12 and younger are required to wear a life jacket in all canoes and kayaks.

Scenic spots for Paddling: See Bucks County by kayak or canoe. Head out to one of these scenic spots

Are there any guided kayak tours offered in Bucks County?

  • Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources offers a number of guided kayak tours in Bucks County, such as a Sunset Paddle at Delaware Canal State Park and Birding by Kayak at Lake Nockamixon.
  • Delaware River Pedal & Paddle combines cycling and kayaking with a ride up the Delaware Canal Tow Path and a paddle down the Delaware River.
  • L.L. Bean Kayak Tours at Lake Nockamixon offers opportunities to kayak at unique times, including its Full Moon Kayak Tour, Fourth of July Fireworks Celebration Kayak Tour and Perseid Meteor Shower Kayak Tour.
  • Silver Lake Nature Center offers kayak tours throughout the summer, including a moonlight kayakaing and birding by kayak.

Where can I take kayak lessons in Bucks County?

  • Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources offers kayak courses at various locations, including Washington Crossing Historic Park and Delaware Canal State Park.
  • L.L. Bean Discovery offers kayaking courses for different skill levels at Lake Nockamixon.
  • Silver Lake Nature Center offers intro to kayaking classes for individuals and families at Silver Lake.
