A 7 Day Travel Guide and Itinerary for Arunachal Pradesh : Experience the Land of Dawn Lit Mountains

The land of dawn lit mountains, Arunachal Pradesh , with its vast forest cover, pristine valleys and snow capped Himalayas, is one of India’s best kept secrets. Arunachal Pradesh is located in the North Eastern tip of India and is bordered by three countries, Bhutan , China and Myanmar and two Indian states in the south, Assam and Nagaland. This state, though has gained some popularity among travellers in the recent past, owing to the famous Ziro Festival of Music , it is still far from commercialisation as compared to Himalayan destinations in the northern part of India like Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand.

Travelling to Arunachal Pradesh is about setting on an adventure in true sense where travellers encounter multiple layers of history and culture, learn to communicate straight from their hearts and learn to enjoy the wilderness. One would not find luxurious stays across the state but can expect to put up at home-stays run by locals having basic amenities where safety and hygiene is ensured. In several places, camp sites are also available where travellers could spend a night, enjoying barbecue and bonfire under starry skies.

It may be noted that Arunachal Pradesh shares its borders with China which is the primary reason why entry to the state is not kept unmonitored for travellers. There are two different processes for Indian and Foreign Nationals to obtain the entry permits, which are explained below.

• Indian citizens are required to obtain an Inner Line Permit (ILP) to enter Arunachal Pradesh.
• Your itinerary should be finalised before you apply for the permit as the permit will be issued based on districts you mention. Please note that your itinerary must follow any of the 12 tourist circuits created by the Arunachal Pradesh Tourism Board.
• An eILP can be acquired from this portal or it can also be obtained from Guwahati Airport.
• You would need scanned copies of your Identity proofs and passport sized photographs to apply for the ILP.
• The Inner Line Permit is of two kinds, one for single applicant and the other is for groups where the details of primary applicant are to be entered.
• An ILP is issued for a maximum period of 30 days.
• The fee is charged per person per district you are visiting. You can expect to pay a few hundred for the permit.
• You have to enter the name and contact number of a local reference. You may speak to your homestay owners beforehand and use their reference. All of them are aware of the drill and are helpful.
• Foreign Nationals are required to obtain a Protected Area Permit (PAP) to enter Arunachal Pradesh.
• Even with a valid PAP, foreigners are not allowed to visit certain areas in the state. Thus, a proper research is essential.
• Please note that your itinerary must follow any of the 12 tourist circuits created by the Arunachal Pradesh Tourism Board.
• The PAP is to be acquired manually from the Deputy Resident Commissioner Office of Arunachal Pradesh located in Guwahati. You’d have to pay a fee of $50 in the office.
• It is important to note that a PAP is only issued to groups, if you wish to travel throughout the state. For solo travelers, the permit is only issued to travel to Ziro Valley, Tawang and Bomdila. You may look for other group of travelers to obtain the full permit.
• The office functions between 10am to 5pm and applications for obtaining a PAP are accepted only till 2pm.
• A local reference and their contact number is a must. You may speak to your homestay owners beforehand and use their reference.
• An alternative option is to apply through a travel agency to save your time and energy and in case you are unable to find a group as a solo traveler. However, expect to pay a few extra thousand rupees if you go by this process.

The best months to visit Arunachal Pradesh, and follow this 7 Day Arunachal Pradesh Itinerary,  are April-May and October-November. The weather is pleasant during these months making your travel quite comfortable.

High altitude regions like Tawang, Sela Pass etc. would be covered in snow during the winter months. So if you are comfortable to travel through spine chilling cold and fancy to see a white Arunachal, winter is your month. But make sure you check the weather forecast beforehand to avoid roadblocks or any other mishaps.

In order to make the most of your Arunachal Pradesh Sightseeing Trip, you should avoid the monsoon months that last between June to September.

A detailed 7 day itinerary to travel to Arunachal Pradesh

Day 1 – guwahati to bomdila.

The first day of your travel shall necessarily contain two segments. First, to reach Guwahati and second, to travel to Bomdila from Guwahati. It is advisable to arrive in Guwahati by early noon so that you have enough time to get to the bus depot and find yourself a bus.

• Fly to Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi Airport in Guwahati.
• Take a train to Guwahati.
• From Guwahati Airport or Railway Station, head to ISBT bus depot from where you can find overnight buses to Bomdila.
• You would reach Bomdila the next morning.

Day 2 – Explore Bomdila

As you reach Bomdila on the second day, check in to your hotel/homestay and freshen up to start the day and explore the town.

Surrounded by various snow capped peaks, Bombila is a scenic destination situated in the Eastern Himalayas. A home to various indigenous tribes, Bomdila is a place where you can explore the monasteries, go hiking and walk through the apple orchards and valleys covered with flowers.  

• Visit the Bomdila Monastery built in 1965, divided into Upper Gompa, Middle Gompa and Lower Gompa out of which the Upper Gompa is the biggest one located on a steep hill.
• Hike up to RR Hill , the highest point in Bomdila to enjoy the spectacular and panoramic views of Bhutan and Tibet.
• If you still have some time to explore, you may take a vehicle to head to Eagle’s Nest Sanctuary , 20 kms outside the town. If you are interested in bird watching, you should definitely not miss this place.
• Head to the apple orchards to take a stroll and also buy some apples for yourself.

Day 3 – Bomdila to Tawang (Explore Sela Pass and Sela Lake enroute)

This leg of the journey might not work too well if you are travelling solo. You can only stop at Sela Lake and Sela Pass if you have reserved a vehicle all for yourself, not a feasible option for a solo traveller. The cost splits in a group.

There are shared sumos that cost around INR 500 till Tawang. The journey might take somewhere around 8 hours. Solo travellers can also  manage to tag along with other groups to share the costs of a reserved vehicle.

After arriving in Tawang, spend the evening walking through the mystic streets and gazing at the snowy peaks of Eastern Himalayas and sleep early to compensate for the tiring journey.

The arrangement of vehicle to travel to Bum-la Pass and the various lakes must be done on this day itself so that permits can be easily obtained.

Tawang is one of those places to which photographs and words do no justice explaining the beauty. It is a remote settlement at an altitude of 305 meters, set against mighty Himalayas, dotted with glacial lakes, it is rightly known as the hidden paradise. Though situated in the extreme corner of the country, it is well developed in general. There are plenty of options to stay, many restaurants to eat at.

You can divide the two days in Tawang into nearby locations to visit, which can be covered on foot and the ones situated a bit far off, like Bum-la Pass, for which you’d require a vehicle.

• Start the day by visiting the Tawang Monastery , the biggest monastery in India and second largest in the world. A three storied monastery situated at a height of 3000 meters is no less than a scenic wonder. Explore the library the old scriptures to learn about Buddhism.
• Head to Urgelling Gompa , a rather small but historically significant monastery which is the birthplace of the 6 th Dalai Lama.
• Visit the Tawang War Memorial , which commemorates the martyrdom of 2140 Indian soldiers of Indo-China War. You can also check the souvenir shop beside the War Memorial.
• In the evening, head to the cosy cafe, Dharma Coffee House and browse through their books.
• Relish on a sumptuous dinner at Dragon  or Orange Restaurant Lounge Bar.

If you wish to book a vehicle to take you to all of these places, you may opt for the same. A Tata Sumo can charge you between INR 2000-3000 for the whole day, depending on whether it is the peak season or not.

On this day, you are all set to travel to the wilderness and travel towards Bum La Pass , the Indo-China border. A Tata Sumo generally takes INR 5000 for the entire day to take you to these places. It works fine when you are travelling in a group but not for solo travelers. People traveling solo may tag along with another group at the taxi stand. Talk to the drivers or your hotel management beforehand so that they may be able to suggest you about other groups who are moving ahead on the same direction. There are bike rentals as well which is the best bet for all adrenaline junkies. However remember that the terrain is extremely rough so set out in a bike only if you are experienced enough.

You need a permission from the Office of the Deputy Commissioner in Tawang District to go to Bum La Pass. Situated at an altitude of 4633 meters, it is a place where Indian Soldiers guard the country. The Pass is historically and culturally significant as well for it is known that Dalai Lama had entered India through this Pass.

Visit the famous Sangetsar Lake , more famously known as Madhuri Lake, named after the actress Madhuri Dixit as she had shot a few scenes of a movie in this spot. Also, stop by the beautiful Panga Teng Tso Lake . These lakes remain frozen during winters.

Day 6 – Tawang – Bomdila – Tezpur

It is your last day in Tawang and you have to travel a long distance on Day 6 of this 7 Day Arunachal Pradesh Itinerary. Start early from Tawang so that you reach Bomdila by noon. To be on the safe side, book a seat in the shared vehicle a day earlier so that you don’t get pushed to the last seats which is very uncomfortable. The fare for a seat in Tata Sumo is INR 500 to reach Bomdila. You can stop in Bomdila for a while and have your lunch there. There are buses that start in the evening for Guwahati.

In case you do not manage to get a direct bus from Bomdila, you may break the travel at Tezpur. In that case the travel looks like this : Bomdila to Tezpur (Tata Sumo) and Tezpur to Guwahati (Bus). If you are opting for this alternative, you may spend the night in Tezpur and travel from Tezpur to Guwahati the next morning.

To be on the safe side, book a flight that is scheduled post 3pm from Guwahati. If you are taking a train, that too, should be scheduled in the second half of the day. This is to ensure that any unavoidable delay on the way from Bomdila/Tezpur to Guwahati does not affect your final leg of the journey.

The northeastern most state of India, Arunachal Pradesh, is home to stunning natural scenery, immaculate valleys, and rich history. Travelling to Arunachal Pradesh is unquestionably worthwhile because you’ll get to see its rich history and culture, beautiful snow-capped mountains, serene lakes, and much more.

Best Time to complete the Arunachal Pradesh Itinerary:

Arunachal Pradesh is best visited in April through May and October through November. The weather conditions are charming during these months, making your trip very restful.

Monsoon in Arunachal Pradesh ranges from June to September. It is the monsoon season when the landscape changes into beautiful green heaven, but visitor attractions may be closed due to heavy rainfall.

Permits required to complete the Arunachal Pradesh Itinerary:

It could be noticed that Arunachal Pradesh imparts its boundaries to China which is the essential justification for why entry to the state is not kept unmonitored for tourists.

There are two distinct permissions for Indian and Foreign Nationals to grant their travel in Arunachal Pradesh.

Inner Line Permit (ILP) for Indian residents.

Protected Area Permit (PAP) for Foreign Nationals.

How to get around Arunachal Pradesh?

To enter Arunachal Pradesh, first, you need to reach Guwahati in Assam and then travel to Murkongselek, a town at the Assam Arunachal boundary.

How to reach Guwahati?

Fly to the Airport in Guwahati.

Take a train to Guwahati.

It is advisable to show up in Guwahati in the early evening. So you can get a train to Murkongselek at Kamakhya Junction at 8:30 pm.

How to reach Murkongselek?

After arriving in Guwahati, head towards Kamakhya Junction, where you will find many trains to Murkongselek.

Or take a bus from the Guwahati bus stop to Murkongselek.

Arunachal Pradesh Itinerary:

Day 1: the journey begins, day 2: enter the west siang district, day 3: travel to mechuka, day 4: explore mechuka, day 5: yarlung camp, gurudwara & taposthan, day 6: dorjeeling village, day 7: to travel is to live.

Day 8: Explore Dambuk

Day 9: The Journey Ends

The journey to the “Land of the rising sun” begins in Murkongselek by road. From Murkongselek, we will go to the first town of Arunachal Pradesh named Pasighat.

Now onwards, our entire travel in Arunachal Pradesh will be by road in a car. You can use a Sumo transport service to travel over the state, as it is effectively accessible in every part of Arunachal Pradesh.

Travel from Murkongselek to Pasighat

You will reach Pasighat from Murkongselek within 45 to 6o minutes. After arriving in Pasighat, find a place to stay for a night and start exploring the city.

What to do in Pasighat?

Explore the Pasighat Market: While walking on the street of Pasighat Market, you will encounter lots of different things that are elusive in other parts of India. Like dry fish, spices, dry rats, tadi(insect), bhootjalokia powder(spicy chili powder), tita baingan(bitter brinjal), pume, bamboo shoots, silkworms, and many more.

Relax on the banks of the Siang river: Siang/Dihang is a tributary river of the Brahmaputra, which flows through Tibet, China, India, and Bangladesh.

Visit the hanging bridge of Panging: The 395-meter-long hanging bridge is built across the Siang River and is considered the longest suspension bridge in Arunachal Pradesh.

After breakfast, leave Pasighat and head towards Aalo. The confluence of the rivers Sipu and Yomgo lies at Along/Aalo. People of the Galo tribe and some parts of the Adi tribe inhabit the town of Aalo.

The whole drive from Pasighat to Aalo will be of about 4 hours. The long drive will be worth the journey when you witness the beauty of the city.

Due to the odyssey, you may not get to explore many things in Aalo. But you can do the following activities if you have plenty of time.

What to do in Aalo ?

Aalo River Rafting: River rafting is the primary activity in Aalo, done on Sipu and Yomgo rivers.

Visit Ramakrishna Ashram: Devoted to Shri Ramakrishna Paramhansa, this ashram has an attractive, well-maintained school.

Walk on the paddy fields or explore the market.

Next morning brace for your road trip to Mechuka. As you travel up two or three thousand feet, you may witness how the air and landscape change decisively with level.

Following a decent 5 hours of travel, you will arrive in Mechuka, the beautiful valley in the West Siang district.

Here find a place to stay and wait for the moon to pass the sky to explore the beautiful town.

What to do in Mechuka?

Mechuka La hike: You can climb the Menchuka La mountain for unrivaled views. It will require a couple of hours to get to the top.

Yarlung Army Camp: You can visit the Yarlung Camp and meet the brave hearts who have been protecting our country.

Lord Hanuman temple: As you travel towards Yarlung Army Camp, you can stop at a small Hanuman temple, across from where you can find a naturally carved face of Lord Hanuman on a rugged mountain cliff.

Gurdwara and Taposthan: There is a Gurdwara maintained by the Indian army and a sacred cave that is dedicated to Guru Nanak Ji on the way to Yarlung Army Camp.

 Dorjeeling Village: This small beautiful village is situated approx 5 km from Mechuka town and has scenic mountain views.

It is impossible to enjoy all these things in one day, so we will stay in Mechuka for the next three days to do these things.

On our first day in Majestic Mechuka, we will climb the epic mountain Mechuka La. It will take a few hours to get to the top of the cliff. You can take some food with you and enjoy it on the top by watching the gorgeous view of Mechuka and the surroundings of snow-capped peaks. The total hike duration may lie between 4 to 6 hours, depending on how quickly you complete it.

Spend the rest of the day interacting with the local peoples of Mechuka and learning new things about the area. You will find that the majority of the individuals belong to the Memba tribe and a Tibeto-mongloid ethnic group that follows Buddhism.

On the next day in Mechuka, we will brace towards the Yarlung Army Camp. It is the final point before the Indo-china border where civilians are permitted to enter without any special permission. Here you can meet the Indian army and hear brave stories about them.

Note: Taking photos and shooting videos is restricted in the area.

On the back way from Yarlung camp, we can stop at a small Hanuman temple. Here you can find the naturally carved face of Lord Hanuman on a rugged mountain cliff.

Thenceforth, drive to the Gurudwara to pay your regards. This Gurudwara has a prayer hall, Langar, and a museum. It was established and managed by an Indian army to commemorate the visit of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji on his journey to Tibet between 1516-1517.

Across the Gurudwara, there is a Guru Nanak Taposthan known to have impressions of Guru Nanak Ji. To enter Taposthan, you need to pass through a narrow passage in the mountain that opens into an enchanting forest by the riverside. And there is a myth that if you are a sinner, you will fail to pass the passage. After spending some time at the riverside hearing the peaceful stem of the river, head back to your stay in Mechuka.

Located crossing the Yargepchu River is the Dorjeeling Village, which has scenic mountain views. It will roughly take 20 to 30 minutes to reach Dorjeeling from Mechuka. Truthfully, it is not a tourist destination. However, it has various picturesque scenes with hanging bridges and a small Monastery.

Here we will end our Mechuka tour and set back to Aalo. After reaching Aalo, have a good sleep because the next day is the travel day.

Get up early, and get ready for a long travel to Dambuk. From Aalo head towards Pasighat. Rest here for a while, and again buckle up to travel to Dambuk.

The drive from Pasighat to Dambuk is the most adventurous, as we will be not driving on the road but across a dry river bed. The total drive time from Aalo to Damuk would be of 6 hours.

Dambuk is almost at the end of east India, the sun usually sets down between 4:30 to 5 pm. So you have no option other than finding a nice place to stay.

What to do in Dambuk?

Visit orange orchard: Dambuk is recognized for its oranges and has hundreds of acres of orange orchards on the mountain slopes.

Bomjir river rafting: Done on the Dibang river, it is the best rafting experience ever.

Day 8: Explore Dambuk 

Dambuk is settled on the beautiful slopes of Arunachal Pradesh and has the most entrancing views. First, we will visit the orange orchard in Dambuk. It is suggested to visit Dambuk between 15 to 18 December as the Orange Dambuk festival happens here. It is a music and adventure festival which started back in 2015. Where you can enjoy doing lots of fun activities, such as angling, hot air balloon, ziplining, adrenaline racing, and many more.

Next, row your cares away on a rafting trip down the Dibang Rivers.

It is the time to bid farewell to Arunachal Pradesh. Head back to Pasighat and follow the same route as we followed to come to Pasighat from Guwahati.

Arunachal Pradesh: Your Ultimate Guide To 10 Days In India's Least Explored State

Known as the “land of dawn-lit mountains”, Arunachal Pradesh – India’s northeastern-most state – is a treasure trove of natural beauty, rich cultural diversity, and ancient heritage. From picturesque mountains, unexplored passes, tranquil lakes, and mesmerising valleys, to peaceful monasteries, lush farmlands, dense forests and remote villages, the state has it all. It is known to be one of the richest biodiversity and heritage hotspots across the world.

But it is not just the natural beauty that makes Arunachal unique. It is extremely important from a geographical and political stand point as it shares a border with three of our neighbours – China Myanmar, and Bhutan. Culturally, it has the highest number of regional languages being used in any state in India and also presents an interesting overlay of Buddhism with the tribal way of life.

However, since Arunachal Pradesh isn’t the most popular destination on the tourist circuit, options for accommodation and eateries are somewhat limited. Planning in advance is essential to make the most of your trip to Arunachal. So, I’ve put together a 10-day itinerary covering some of the more popular and must-visit places in the state.

Before you go

Indian tourists require an Inner Line Permit (ILP) to be able to tour around Arunachal. It can be acquired from any of the Arunachal Pradesh Houses situated in New Delhi, Kolkata, Shillong or Guwahati. At present, it is not possible to procure an ILP on arrival to Arunachal, therefore you will need to get it in advance from one of the aforementioned places. You can also apply for one online, here.

The ILP for tourists is valid for 15 days and can be extended up to a maximum of 30 days from the date of visit.

Foreign tourists require a Restricted Area Permit (RAP) which can only be acquired from New Delhi or Kolkata. In Guwahati travel agents can arrange this permit for private groups of 2 or more people.

The permits will be required to be presented at official checkpoints and hotels where you are staying. It is therefore important to keep several physical copies of the permit with you.

Exploring Arunachal Pradesh

Fly down from your home city to Guwahati. Take a cab from here to Itanagar. It is an eight-hour drive and will cost about ₹3,000 by taxi.

If you want a cheaper option, you can also opt for a bus, although that will take substantially longer (11-12 hours).

Check into your hotel when you reach in the evening and spend the rest of the day relaxing. Go exploring Itanagar the next morning.

The state capital, Itanagar, gets its name from the mysterious Ita Fort, that is set atop a hill overlooking the city. In recent years, the city has seen a boom in construction and development, giving it the look and feel of a more urban destination than a remote place. However, despite being awash with concrete, this burgeoning town has not lost its character. The people are simple, yet very fashionable, and you will find great places to eat (something that is hard to do in the rest of the state).

Exploring Itanagar

Begin your tour of the city early, right after breakfast. Start your day by visiting the Ita Fort and Itanagar Wildlife Centre. Post lunch, visit the State Museum and the Itanagar Craft Centre. In the evening visit the Gompa Mandir and then head to the Ganga Lake. Head to Ganga market for some shopping and dinner.

Where to stay: Hotel Todo , Hotel SC Continental , Hotel Moomsie

Best places to eat: A number of new eateries have opened up in Itanagar in the last few years, including fast food chains like KFC. Chillies Restaurant is the best for local delicacies, while Hot Bite is a good option for those looking for familiar north Indian dishes.

Take off from Itanagar early in the morning after breakfast and drive down to Ziro. It is about 110km and a 4-hour long journey. On reaching, have your lunch and set out to explore the valley.

Exploring Ziro

Start off by visiting the Talley Valley Wildlife Sanctuary, which is home to several species of endangered animals and is most well-known for the clouded leopard. Visit a fish farm while on your way back to the accommodation in the evening.

Start your second day in Ziro by visiting the 5,000-year-old Meghna Cave Temple. Spend the afternoon trekking in Midey. On your way back from there to your accommodation, visit Ziro Puto, the place where India's first administrative centre was set up post independence.

Where to stay : Ziro doesn't have a lot of conventional hotels, so a homestay or a state-run guesthouse is your best option for getting a good accommodation. Ziro Valley Resort and Arunachal Guesthouse are good options. You can get a list of accommodation options in Ziro and their contact information here.

Where to eat: Due to lack of commercialisation, you will not find restaurant-culture to be very prevalent in Ziro. There are a few road-side stalls and dhabas serving local food. However, if you haven't acquired a taste to the local cuisine, Maggi is also served almost at all of these places. You can't however, depend on these for all your meals and your place of stay is your best bet for these.

From Ziro to Aalo, it is a 12-hour journey covering around 422 km. Start early in the morning from Ziro, so that you can reach Aalo by nightfall. Check into your accommodation and spend the night resting to wake up refreshed for an eventful morning.

Formerly known as Along, Aalo is the headquarter of the West Siang district of Arunachal Pradesh and makes for a great getaway for those who are looking for peace and solitude. The town is blessed with beautiful natural scenery – stunning orange gardens, swaying millet and buckwheat plantations, and serene river-side accommodations. Two rivers, Sipu and Yomgo, flowing through the heart of this town, add to its picturesque charm.

Exploring Aalo

Start off your morning by witnessing the Cable Bridge over Siom River and then arrange for river-rafting later in the morning to give your day an adventurous twist. Spend your afternoon visiting Kaza Village for an insight into local culture. In the evening, explore the Kane Wildlife Sanctuary and visit the Ramakrishna Ashram if you feel like.

Where to stay : Aalo has handful of guest houses, which offer decent services and warm hospitality. You can expect clean but small rooms with some breathtaking views. Hotel Kenjin and Hotel West are good options. You can get a list of available guesthouses and hotels in Aalo from here .

Where to eat: Again, being untouched by commercialisation, it is difficult to find restaurants in Aalo apart from the ones in hotels and resorts or roadside eateries.

Leave from Aalo, early in the morning. Pasighat is about a 3.5-hour journey from there (104km). Check into your guesthouse/hotel on reaching Pasighat later in the morning and then immediately set out to explore the town.

The headquarter of the East Siang district, Pasighat. It is set up on the banks of the Siong River and is known as the "Gateway into Arunachal,". It is the oldest town in the state. Like the rest of Arunachal, it is abundant in natural beauty, but apart from that also offers several opportunities for adventure enthusiasts with ample activities along the Siong.

Exploring Pasighat

Start off with a trek to Kekar Monying. Spend the afternoon along the Siong. You can go rafting, or just enjoy a picnic by the river-side. Nighttime is great for stargazing as the sky is exceptionally clear on non-cloudy days.

Where to stay : Pasighat, being an important entry point into Arunachal, has a few good hotels and guesthouses. The hotels in Pasighat range from moderately expensive to expensive and offer good facilities. There are a few resorts along the Siang river, a little further from Pasighat as well. Donyi Hango Eco Resort & Homestay and Serene Abode Hotel are good options. You can find more options here.

Where to eat : China Valley Restaurant and Hotel Aane are two of the most decent dine-out places in Pasighat, apart from the in-house restaurants in the hotels and resorts.

Leave Pasighat for Roing, early morning on the eighth day of your journey. It will take a good 8 hours to reach Roing, which is 307km away. You will reach by evening. Check into your hotel and spend the evening exploring nearby areas.

Roing is one of the more popular destinations in Arunachal Pradesh, especially because it packs natural beauty, archaeological wonders, and rich cultural heritage into one tiny place. You will find several lakes, ancient forts, and several tribes living together here in harmony.

Exploring Roing

Kickstart your morning by going to Mayodia Pass, 50km ahead of Roing. After coming back from there visit the Bhismaknagar Fort and then in the afternoon take a trip to Mehao Wildlife Sanctuary and Mehao Lake. In the evening, you can visit another beautiful lake – Sally lake and witness the sunset from there.

Where to stay: Roing has a number of well-maintained hotels. Sally Lake Hotel, Inspection Bungalow , and Circuit House are good accommodation options, offering guests a good view of the surroundings along with basic amenities. You can find more options here.

Where to eat: While not many, Roing does have some nice restaurants serving a variety of cuisines. You can try the Naha Canteen for budget options, or Green Park Dhaba for some north-Indian delicacies.

Head to Dibrugarh on the morning of the 10th day for your return journey back home.

Getting to Arunachal Pradesh

By air: Arunachal has three airports in the state – Ziro, Along and Tezu, but these are usually served by connecting flights from Guwahati and Kolkata. The closest airport that is well-connected to the rest of the country is Guwahati. But depending on where you're going in Arunachal, you can also take flights to Tezpur and Dibrugarh.

For this itinerary, we will use Guwahati as our base, which is 311km from Itanagar, the state capital, and is our first stop.

By train: Around 43 km from Itanagar, Harmuti railway station in Assam) is the nearest train station connecting Arunachal Pradesh to other major cities of India. From there you can take a bus or hire a cab to reach the state.

By road: The state is most accessible by road and easily approachable by all nearby states and cities. There are a number of state transport buses that run within Arunachal as well as connect it to the neighbouring states. The network of taxis is also well developed and preferred by most tourists as it is more reliable than the buses.

Getting around Arunachal Pradesh

Arunachal Pradesh State Transit (APST) runs regular buses across the state, but they mostly operate in the plains because of the condition of the roads in the more remote areas. And because of the terrain, the buses can sometimes be infrequent and unreliable. The main mode of transport is shared Sumo taxis for the locals and other cabs for tourists.

The road network in Arunachal is not overly developed and it is often not possible to move directly between smaller towns and villages. You will often have to return to the plains instead of going directly from town to town.

Best time to visit Arunachal Pradesh

Because of the varied terrain, Arunachal is subject to a diverse range of weather conditions. The summers are usually warm, with temperatures going up to 35ºC, while the winters are cold and chilly with sub zero temperatures in several places. The monsoons receive a heavy dose of rainfall, so it is advisable not to visit during that time. Peak summers are from May to June, monsoons from July to September, and winters from October to February.

Spring (March-April) and autumn (early October) are usually the best times to visit as the temperature is moderate and most of the places are accessible.

Tawang is a veritable smorgasbord of incredible experiences that straddle dimensions ranging from spirituality, nature, adventure, and much more. Whether you plan for a Tawang tour of 3 days, 4 days , or more, the things to do in Tawang and the places to see in Tawang and the vicinity will keep you busy. In a nutshell, Tawang is in many ways a traveller’s paradise.

Tawang Itinerary – About Tawang Valley | Tawang History

It is imperative to understand briefly the history of Tawang India and the legends associated with it before delving into the attractions and experiences that await you there. The origins of Tawang city date back to medieval times and are lost in the grey corridors of time.

Tawang is synonymous with the monastery that stands as its best-known icon and the history of both are inextricably linked.

Legend has it that, sometime in the latter half of the 17th century (1680-81), Merak LamaLodre Gyatso arrived from Lhasa on the instructions of the 5th Dalai Lama . His mission was to build a Buddhist monastery in the land of the Monpas . The land of the Monpa tribe stretched across what are now the districts of Tawang and West Kameng.

Merak Lama sat in deep meditation, hoping for divine guidance about where the monastery should come up. When he emerged from his meditation, he found his horse missing. He went in search of his horse and found it grazing on a beautiful and verdant hill that looked over the valley.

He found the place, perfect for a monastery, and taking this incident as a divine instruction, he decided to build the monastery there.

In the year 1680-81, the Tawang Monastery came up , it shone like a pearl, perched on a high cliff, caressed by clouds, a truly mystical place, and the perfect abode of the spirit of Buddhism. The monastery was known as Gaden Namgyal Lhatse, which in Tibetan means, “the complete paradise of divine victory .

“ The town that came up around the monastery came to be known as Tawang , which literally translates in Tibetan as “ chosen by the horse .”

Tawang has had a chequered political history. It was under the Tibetan administration till 1950, when Tibet lost its autonomy, and became a part of the Peoples’ Republic of China. Tawang thus came under the control of the Chinese. It was in the year 1951, that India finally took control of Tawang.

However, the 1962 war with China saw Tawang fall to the Chinese forces and was in their control for a brief period before the ceasefire and withdrawal of the Chinese army. In spite of this somewhat chaotic history, Tawang is enveloped in an aura of calm and serenity and exudes a mystical charm.

Ideally, you would start your visit to Tawang from Guwahati if you are flying into Guwahati Airport as we did. In a typical itinerary, you would spend a couple of days in Bomdila and Dirang en route to Tawang from Guwahati. We spent a couple of days each in Bomdila and Dirang before proceeding to Tawang, via Sela Pass and the Jaswant Singh War Memorial.

Tawang Itinerary – Day One

On Day one of your Tawang Itinerary , you would arrive in Tawang around the evening and relax after a long drive from Bomdila/Dirang. However, it makes sense to visit one of the attractions near Tawang on your way to Tawang City, which is the spectacular Nuranang Falls. Also on the way to Tawang from Dirang, you pass through two notable landmarks, which you should stop and visit.

Sela Pass – Gateway To Tawang

The Sela Pass is known as the gateway to Tawang as it is a mountain pass that connects Tawang with West Kameng District. Sela Pass is located at an altitude of 13,700 feet . An ornate and beautiful gate, welcomes you to Tawang, at the Sela Pass.

The beautiful Sela Lake is also located by the side of the road in Sela Pass. You can stop for some time for the amazing views on a clear day and also climb up to the Buddha statue accessed by steps near the Sela Pass post.

The statue of Buddha Shakyamuni in many ways blesses travellers crossing the Sela Pass. One can also see the statues of the protector deities Palden Lhamo and Nechung and Guru Padmasambhava along with some Thangka paintings. The site has been blessed by the 14th Dalai Lama, and has been built and maintained by the Monpas of Tawang.

Distance from Tawang : 73 kilometres. Tip : Please be aware of the low oxygen level at Sela Pass.

Jaswant Garh War Memorial – Requiem For A Rifleman

The Jaswantgarh War Memorial is a monument erected in memory of Rifleman Jaswant Singh who laid down his life during the battle of Nurananag in the 1962 Indo-China war .

The memorial is built over what remains of a tree under which Jaswant Singh breathed his last after being hit by enemy bullets.

Do stop at this place that has been sanctified by the blood of Indian soldiers and pay homage to the martyrs. The Jaswantgarh War Memorial is located at an altitude of about 10,000 feet.

Distance from Tawang : 53 kilometres. Tip : Do get a feel of the bunkers that were used by the Indian soldiers during the 1962 war.

Nuranang Falls – Day 1 Of Your Tawang Itinerary

Feasting your eyes on the beauty of the  Nuranang Falls is one of the most pleasurable things to do when you visit Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh . Any itinerary for Tawang would be incomplete without a visit to the Nuranang Falls. When we visited the falls in the month of September, the waterfall was in full flow and we experienced the spectacular grandeur of the falls in all its majesty.

The waters of the Nuranang river plummet down with great velocity from a height of about 100 metres, creating a misty spray of great proportions. According to a local myth, the Nuranang falls is named after a local girl of the Monpa tribe named Nura, who is believed to have helped Rifleman Jaswant Singh of the Indian Army during the Indo-China war of 1962.

Parts of a song sequence for the Bollywood film Koyla featuring Madhuri Dixit were short against the spectacular background of the Nuranang falls.

The Nuranang falls are located near the town of Jang, about 30 kilometres from Tawang, near the Bomdila-Tawang Road.

Distance from Tawang : 30 kilometres. Tip – If you don’t want to get wet, carry a raincoat or waterproof poncho and wear appropriate footwear.

Tawang Itinerary – Day Two

On day 2 of your Tawang itinerary , you will cover some of the best places to visit in Tawang including the famous Tawang Monastery. You would begin your sightseeing in Tawang after a hearty breakfast at your homestay or hotel.

Tawang Monastery – Bask in Serenity

Without a doubt, the Tawang Monastery is one of the top Sights in Tawang . It is the prime reason that fuels Tawang tourism and no Tawang travel itinerary will be complete without a visit to the Tawang Monastery .

The Tawang Monastery dates back to the late 17th century and is the second-largest Buddhist Monastery in Asia . It is also known as Gaden Namgyal Lhatse . The monastery commands a beautiful view of the valley stretching out below and is a very important place in the Buddhist circuit. It was built by Merak Lama under the guidance of the 5th Dalai Lama.

The fortified complex of the Tawang Monastery is surrounded by a huge wall and contains the main temple and prayer hall, the library, the room for lighting butter lamps, the residential quarters of the monks, a school, and a museum.

Distance from Tawang : 1.5 kilometres. Tip – Pay a visit to the monastery early in the morning around 6.00 AM to watch the morning session for young monks. It is a very beautiful experience.

Thukje Chueling Nunnery – Ani Gompa ( Nunnery)

This Ani Gompa is a nunnery where female Buddhist monks stay. It comes under the purview of the Tawang Monastery. It is located in picturesque surroundings and the campus consists of the main temple and hall, butter lamp room, and living quarters of the monks.

The main sanctum has beautiful statues of Taradevi, Buddha, Je Tsongkhapa the founder of the Gelugpa sect, and Avalokiteshvara, among others.

About 45 nuns stay at this nunnery which belongs to the Gelugpa sect. This is one of 3 nunneries in Tawang, and is located in the midst of lush green hills and commands a breathtaking view of the valley. The nuns treat visitors to cups of steaming hot butter tea in a room that serves as a reception room for visitors.

Distance from Tawang : 6 kilometres. Tip : Do not miss a very old and rare Thungka Painting from Tibet.

Buddha Statue – Dominating Tawang’s Skyline

A giant statue of a sitting Buddha looks out serenely over Tawang. Below the statue is a small Buddhist Gompa. The area near the Buddha statue is a nice place with nice views of the valley in the vicinity. The Giant Buddha Statue is visible from anywhere in Tawang because of its size and strategic location.

Distance from Tawang : 2.9 kilometres. Tip : Make the most of a photo opportunity near the Buddha statue.

Tawang View Point – A Vantage Point To Appreciate Tawang’s Beauty

Near the Giant Buddha statue is the Tawang View Point , where you can spend some quiet moments sitting on a bench looking out at the valley that stretches out below. A huge signboard, that says, “I Love Tawang,” is a perfect backdrop for a nice selfie or two.

The depiction of Buddha’s first sermon in Sarnath can be seen near the viewpoint as well as the statue of an emaciated Buddha deep in meditation after practising arduous austerities for 6 years grabs your attention.

Distance from Tawang : 2.9 kilometres. Tip : Do not miss the 104 feet tall Indian National Flag fluttering here, which was inaugurated by Chief Minister Shri Pema Khandu on the 3rd of February, 2022.

Tawang War Memorial – Remembering Our Brave Soldiers

The Chinese had captured Tawang and advanced beyond Bomdila and towards the borders of Assam in the 1962 war. The Tawang War Memorial is a tribute in stone to the bravery of the gallant Indian soldiers who sacrificed themselves, to defend the country. A Stupa stands as an eternal ode to the brave martyrs. The names of the martyrs are also etched here for posterity.

Distance from Tawang : 1 kilometre. Tip : Do watch the laser show in the evening that recounts the saga of the Indo-China war of 1962 and the bravery of our soldiers.

Tawang Itinerary – Day Three

On Day 3 of your Tawand itinerary , plan to visit Bumla Pass on the Indo-China border and some high-altitude lakes on the way. By late afternoon you should be back from Bumla Pass, leaving you enough time for some shopping and sightseeing within Tawang city.

It is advisable to have an early breakfast and leave for Bumla Pass. Please note that you would require a special permit from the Army administration to travel to Bumla Pass. The same would be arranged by your tour operator or the driver of the vehicle that you hire to travel to Bumla Pass.

Bumla Pass – Ringside View Of The China Border

One of the best places to visit in Tawang is Bumla Pass . The journey to Bumla Pass itself is incredible as you travel across bewitching landscapes. You encounter a host of high-altitude lakes on your journey.

Bumla Pass is located at an altitude of 15,200 feet and is generally enveloped in fog or snow. It was the theatre of a fierce battle between Indian and Chinese forces during the 1962 Indo-China war.

At Bumla Pass, you are taken on a guided walk to the border outpost, by the army personnel and escorted back. You can see the Chinese side of the border and also listen to the story of the battle of Bumla here.

There is a canteen run by the Army where you can have light snacks and tea or coffee. You can also buy items like jackets, boots, caps, and hats here at pretty reasonable prices.

Distance from Tawang : 53 kilometres. Tip : At 15,200 feet Bumla Pass can be very cold, please carry your woollens. If you are susceptible to AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness) , take the necessary precautions.

Joginder Singh War Memorial – Remembering A Brave Soldier

A few kilometres before Bumla Pass, by the side of the road stands the Sub Joginder Singh PVC Memorial . It is built in memory of the valiant Subedar who lead a small platoon of the Sikh Regiment at Bumla Pass to stop the Chinese Forces during the 1962 Indo-China war.

Subedar Joginder Singh was the JCO who commanded a platoon of around 20 soldiers at Bumla Pass when they were attacked by the Chinese. They were hopelessly outnumbered but fought valiantly till the last man. Subedar Joginder Singh fought and killed more than 50 soldiers single-handedly before being fatally injured.

He was captured and died in Chinese captivity. His ashes were later repatriated to his unit and he was posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra.

Distance from Tawang : 50 kilometres. Tip : Stop to pay your respects to the memory of the valiant soldier on the way to Bumla Pass.

Shungatser Lake – Madhuri Lake

As you drive towards Shungatser Lake , you get the feeling of travelling to another world, a world whose beauty defies imagination. Clouds caress mountain peaks, coniferous trees wave in the wind, and intriguingly shaped water bodies gleam bewitchingly.

The Shungatser Lake also spelt variously as Sangestar Lake or Sungatser Lake , is more popularly known as Madhuri Lake . The lake lies in the shadow of two huge hills that seem perpetually hugged by clouds. The lake presents a scene straight out of a film or a surreal dream.

No wonder that the lake formed the backdrop for a song sequence of the Bollywood film Koyla, featuring the famous Indian actress, Madhuri Dixit.

Shungatser Lake is perched at an altitude of 12,165 feet and is one of the best places to see in Tawang . The Lake is maintained by the Indian Army.

Distance from Tawang : 37 kilometres. Tip : You can have your lunch at the canteen here which is run by the army and offers food at a very reasonable rate.

Pang Teng Tso Lake – PT Tso Lake

The Pang Teng Tso Lake also known as PT Tso Lake is the closest to Tawang and you come across it about 17 kilometres from Tawang City. It is a beautiful lake that shimmers in the shade of lush trees. In the background, you can see snow-clad peaks that lend an ethereal aura to the lake.

It is a great place to spend some serene moments lost in the beauty of nature. You can truly enjoy the environs of PT Tso lake if the weather is clear, otherwise, it is likely to be veiled with a thick layer of mist.

Distance from Tawang : 17 kilometres. Tip : Stop to experience the vibes of the lake, even if the weather is not clear, it is by the side of the road leading to Bumla pass.

Tawang Market – Shopping In Tawang

A visit to the local markets in any town or city brings you close to the local vibes and provides a more immersive experience. This is true of Tawang as with any other city. If you are looking for local shopping experiences, then Tawang has not one but three markets, where you can indulge your impulses and shop till you drop.

The three markets of Tawang are Old Market, New Market, and Nehru Market . Of these, the most popular market is the Old Market which has shops selling everything from handicrafts and curios to groceries and vegetables.

If you are thinking of what to buy in Tawang, it is a good idea to shop for handicrafts including Thangka paintings, wooden carved show pieces, shawls, Buddhist symbols, and flags .

Distance from Tawang : 2 kilometres. Tip : The Old Market is closed on Tuesdays, so plan your visit accordingly, the Nehru Market is closed on Wednesdays, while the New Market is closed on Saturdays.

Tawang Craft Centre And Emporium

The Tawang Craft Centre is an endeavour of The Department of Textile and Handicrafts, Government of Arunachal Pradesh , to encourage and promote the rich heritage of arts and crafts of the Monpa people. Here you can see the making of various items of woodcraft including tables, wooden utensils, and other exquisitely carved wooden items.

You can also see how the beautiful carpets, colourful bags, and traditional dresses of the Monpas, take shape at the hands of the expert weavers. You will find here Thangkas (Cloth Paintings), masks, footwear, pottery, and headgear including the traditional Monpa hats that are made of Yak’s felt.

You can buy all the different traditional handicrafts that are made at the Craft centre of Tawang at the Government-run Sales Emporium. Here you can buy authentic local handicrafts at reasonable prices.

Urgelling Monastery –  6th Dalai Lama Monastery 

Urgelling Monastery is a small but beautiful monastery with very peaceful vibes, tucked away from the hustle and bustle of Tawang city. It is older than the Tawang monastery and is believed to have been built around 1487 by Ugyen Zangpa. In those times it is believed to have been the biggest Buddhist school in the area .

The Urgelling monastery is located in the village in which Tashi Tenzin father of the 6th Dalai Lama lived, and today the monastery is dedicated to Tsanyang Gyatso, H.H. the 6th Dalai Lama.

The Urgelling monastery has a magical charm with its walls painted white and yellow. There are rare thangkas (cloth paintings) in the monastery.

Distance from Tawang : 5 kilometres. Tip : Lookout for the rare Thangkas (cloth paintings) of all the Dalai Lamas (1 to 14) and those of the 6th Dalai Lama’s parents at the Urgelling Monastery.

Khinmey Monastery

The Khinmey Monastery belongs to the Nyingma sect of Buddhism and is located in a village of the same name. It is also known as Sang-ngag-choekhorling. The monastery was established in the year 1440 AD by Rev. Kundun Sange Yeshe. The beautiful monastery overlooks the valley below and is a serene place to visit.

Kushanang – Maternal Village of the 6th Dalai Lama

Deep in the countryside is the picturesque village of Kushanang . The village nestles in the midst of lush green vegetation and beautiful fields. Located here is the home of the mother of the 6th Dalai Lama . The ancient house still exists and descendants of the 6th Dalai Lama still live in the old house.

The village is a bridge to ancient history that goes back a few centuries and lies in relative obscurity. It is definitely one of the offbeat places to visit in Tawang.

Distance from Tawang : 18 kilometres. Tip : Look out for the beautiful scenery around the village.

Shernup Village – Tawang’s Valley Of Flowers

The state of Arunachal Pradesh enthrals visitors with its sheer natural beauty. One of the beautiful sights not to be missed is rows and rows of colourful Cosmos flowers , which are also colloquially known as, “I Love You, ” flowers. Though the cosmos blooms can be seen across different places in Arunachal Pradesh.

The village of Shernup is a great place for seeing cosmos blooms. Both sides of the road are bejewelled with colourful blossoms of red, yellow, pink, and orange cosmos flowers.

Distance from Tawang : 2 kilometres. Tip : Check for the flowering season of Cosmos flowers before you head to Shernup, September-October is the best month to spot them.

Chagzam Bridge – An Ancient Wonder

The Chagzam Bridge is an ancient bridge believed to have been built in the early part of the 15th century by Tangton Gyalpo who was a disciple of the first Dalai Lama. He was a renowned architect and he was known for building iron chain bridges and is believed to have built over 100 iron chain bridges.

The Chaksam Bridge is an iron chain bridge built over the Tawang-Chu river . The bridge is still functional and one can take a walk on the swaying bridge, above the swirling waters of the river.

Distance from Tawang : 25 kilometres. Tip : Getting to the bridge will involve a little bit of walking, there are steps that lead down to the bridge.

10-Day To Explore The State Of Arunachal Pradesh – My Arunachal Pradesh Trip Itinerary

At the north-eastern tip of India, Arunachal Pradesh invites you to an abode of natural beauty, mountains, and picturesque valleys. Apart from natural beauty, the state’s uniqueness lies in its geographical boundaries. It shares its borders with China, Myanmar, and Bhutan. The rich culture of Arunachal Pradesh is very interesting. It has the highest number of regional languages used in any state of India. The state is diverse as it has the maximum tribes and Buddhist monasteries. This post explains my 10 days Arunachal Pradesh trip itinerary.

Before you reach Arunachal Pradesh, tourists require an Inner Limit Permit (ILP). The permission can be obtained from New Delhi, Kolkata, Guwahati, or Shillong. You must ensure to obtain the ILP in advance as you cannot procure the permit on the way to Arunachal Pradesh. The ILP is valid for 15 days and can be extended up to 30 days. If you are a foreign tourist, you require a Restricted Area Permit (RAP). It can be obtained from Kolkata or New Delhi.

Some of the most popular destinations of the state are Bomdila, Itanagar, Tawang, Zemithang, Ziro, Dirang, and Roing. A 10 day Arunachal Pradesh trip itinerary gives you a guide to how you can cover the most interesting places of the state in a given route. First, reach Guwahati to start your journey of Arunachal Pradesh. If you have travelled a long distance, check in a hotel for a night and rest. If you reach by afternoon, you can visit some popular nearby places in Guwahati too such as Kamakhya Temple, Assam State Museum, Nehru Park, Umananda Temple, State Zoo, etc.

Day 1 – Roadtrip To Bomdila

Traveling from Guwahati to Bomdila is 350 kilometers. You can reach Bomdila via roadways from either Tezpur or Guwahati. As the distance is large, you can take a break at Tezpur. Even the closest airport is Tezpur Airport from Bomdila. You can stay in Tezpur and take rest for a night and start your journey again from Tezpur to Bomdila. If you are staying in Tezpur for a day, you can visit places like Nameri National Park, Agnigarh, Bamuni Hills, Chitralekha Udyan, District Museum, Ouguri Hills, etc.

Local buses and shared jeeps are the popular means of transport from Tezpur every morning. They take you to either Bomdila or Dirang. The above options are suitable for budget travelers. You can also reach Bomdila hiring a private car. The distance between Tezpur and Bomdila is around 5 hours via Chariduar- Tawang Road.

After driving up to a certain distance, Bomdila is the best discovered on foot up and down strolling on the roads or steep staircases. When you reach Bomdila, you can explore a lot of local food such as thukpa, momos, and noodles. Some of the famous restaurants of Bomdila are such as Silver Oaks, Tsepal Yongjam and Dragon. Check-in the hotel and take a rest. Be ready with your DSLR in the morning to cover one of the most photographic places in the state.

Day 2 Visit Bomdila Monastery

Bomdila is one of the favorite tourist destinations of Arunachal Pradesh. A home to Monpa, Miji, Sherdukpen, Aka, and Bogun tribes, Bomdila is a nature’s lover delight. Set in lofty ranges of eastern Himalayas, Bomdila is enveloped with scenic environments of Buddhist monasteries and apple orchids. Packed with snow-clad Himalayan peaks, flower-laden valleys, and lush forests, Bomdila offers an unmatched hiking adventure. The great views of Bomdila are the Kangto and Gorichen Peaks, the highest peaks in the State.

The best time to visit Bomdila is between April and October. Start your day with the biggest attraction in the area, Bomdila Monastery. Inaugurated in 1965 by the Buddhist monks and Llamas, the monastery has three parts, Upper Gompa, Middle Gompa and Lower Gompa. You can attend the prayer in a large hall. Visiting the monastery makes you feel spiritually strong

Upper Gompa is located on a steep hill. In the premises, there is a prayer hall, Buddha Temple and a monk school. The Bomdila Monastery is the most popular destination in the town. If you are not tired, you can go trekking to RR hill which is the highest point of Bomdila. You can explore the breathtaking views of Tibet and Bhutan landscapes. Some other attractions are Kameng River, Bomdila Apple Orchards, and Eaglenest Wildlife Sanctuary.

Bomdila is not a destination that you can cover in a day. To explore the town, plan to stay at least three days in Bomdila.

Day 3.  Visiting The Upper Gompa And Lower Gompa

Your day becomes special when you start your day at Upper Gompa. It is located in the village of Bomdila which is 276 km from Itnanagr, 155 km far from Tezpur and 183 km from Tawang. Placed on a steep hill at an elevation of 8500 feet in the Western Kameng district, Upper Gompa is one of the most visited parts of GRL monastery. It showcases the different shades of life and religion Buddhism. It is also an education center for new monks.

Next, Lower Gompa is one of the best places to visit and explore Bomdila sightseeing. The Lower Gompa is worth a visit.  The Lower Gompa is located in the center of the town. You can experience the influence of Tibetan architecture in Lower Gompa. It has a huge prayer hall. Among Buddhists, it is one of the most sacred places. The Middle Gompa is the oldest part that has Blue Medicine Buddha. Here, it is believed to have the medicines to cure all kinds of diseases.

The Middle Gompa is situated in the main market of the town. All the three parts are open from 8 am to 8 pm. When you are done with the three parts, you can visit the Crafts Center right across the Lower Gompa. You can buy some local handicrafts like wood creations, local hand paper, hats, incense sticks, traditional masks and thangkas. Thangkas or tangka is just like a Tibetan painting on a cloth. Thangka means a recorded message. It is creation like an oil painting as an important mode of religious expression.

If you have time, you can also cover the District Museum. It represents the culture and history of the region. The Bomdila mystic beauty is still not over, spend a day more to discover some of the best off-beat destinations of the town.

Day 4 Another Day In Bomdila

Bomdila is enigmatic and mysterious. The massive Himalayas covering it from everywhere and clouds kissing the ground; the breathtaking views will leave you hypnotized. It is worth spending another day in Bomdila. The panoramic view of the Kameng Valley leaves you speechless. Early morning, be ready for an off-beat destination the Secret Cave Temple located in the army restricted area. Firstly, you need permission to reach there. The temple is covered with dense forests all around.

The path to reach the temple is quite challenging yet exciting. The trail is a little steep. You won’t generally find any tourists in the temple. But if you love adventure, this is the right place for you. Once you reach, you will have no regrets. You can view low-height caves where you can spend a good time doing photography.

Walking back is another challenge. If you are wearing good trekking shoes, you can cover the distance easily. Apart from the temple, you can also visit Sessa Orchid Sanctuary.  Travelers love to explore the untouched scenic beauty, deep valleys, rivers and waterfalls here.

The highlights are the orchids and exotic animals in the sanctuary. Another place is the Eaglenest Wildlife Sanctuary that offers splendid scenic beauty of Kameng River, lush greenery, and cascading waterfalls. It is home to a variety of animals and birds such as eagle, kingfisher, duck, Bengal Tiger, Red Panda, Black Bear, etc.

Out of all, the best destination for a day is the Secret Cave Temple, a perfect offbeat destination. If you have time for the day, you can think of exploring other destinations too.

Day 5  Bomdila To Tawang

After a mesmerizing stay at Bomdila, start your journey to discover the mystique beauty of Arunachal Pradesh in Tawang. Tawang is a perfect destination symbolizing both nature and culture. It is a high altitude town situated in the lap of the Himalayas. A picturesque town with Buddhist monasteries, scenic lakes, and mountains is a favorite spot for mountain lovers.

One of the most popular off-beat destinations, Tawang is situated 185 kilometers from Bomdila at an altitude of 3025m above sea level. Here in Tawang, the wilderness of Gudpi and Chong-Chugmi ranges, Tawang Valley and Tawang Chu River are enthralling. Tawang makes up the best vacation for off-beat travelers with gorgeous vistas, mountain yaks, and Monpas tribals. Bordered by Tibet in the North, Bhutan in the South-west, the area is covered by Sela ranges. It is an abode to migrating birds and a treat for photographers. Major attractions of Tawang are Gorichen Peak, Tawang Monastery, Bap Teng Kang Waterfall, Madhuri Lake, Sela Pass, Tawang War Memorial, Jaswant Garh, etc.

To reach Tawang, rent a shared cab or book a bus from Bomdila that will take around 8-11 hours. The drive time depends upon the weather and road conditions. Though, the roads from Bomdila to Tawang aren’t in a good shape. On the way to Tawang, you can stop at Nuranang Waterfalls, 40 kilometers from Tawang. There are many options to stay in Tawang such as The Circuit House, Government Tourist Lodge, Inspection Bungalow, Hotel Nichu, Hotel Shangrila, etc.

To explore the local food, you can stop at roadside cafes, stalls and restaurants such as Orange Restaurant, Café Nirvana, Lounge Bar, Blue Pine, etc. You would be amazed to see that the food is quite expensive in the town.  Check-in the hotel and relax for a night.

Day 6 – Exploring Tawang

The next morning, pull up your socks to explore the picturesque beauty of Tawang. You can start with the Tawang Monastery, followed by the Twang War Memorial. Tawang Monastery is the largest monastery in India and second largest in the world. The monastery is three stories situated on a mountain at an altitude of 3000m. In the library, you can discover valuable old scriptures, mainly Kangyur and Tengyur. Tawang War Memorial is situated at 2 kms from Tawang Monastery. It is a wonderful spot to explore patriotism in Tawang. The place commemorates the bravery of 2140 martyred Indian soldiers of Indo-China War.

After exploring the war memorial, it’s time to experience the scenic views of Tawang. Pankang Teng Tso Lake is another attraction to visit in Arunachal Pradesh. This lake is also known as P.T. Tso. One of the most interesting lakes enveloped with natural beauty. Surrounded by the snow-clad mountains of Himalayas and cool blue waters, the lake is pristine and mesmerizing. To road trip to the lake is very engaging and interesting. It’s a 17 km road trip set in a white backdrop would totally hypnotize you.

If you wish, you can also travel to Shong-tser Lake located 47km from Tawang. This place is very famous in Arunachal Pradesh as a popular picnic spot. The place is very pleasant, cool and quiet in summers enveloped with blue flowers. The best time to visit this lake in the months from April to October. The lake remains frozen during winter. Near the lake, you can enjoy the hot cuppa noodles, tea and Maggi.

The last destination of the day would be Jaswant Garh, a memorial built in the honor of the soldier Jaswant Singh of the Indian Army who fought against the Chinese Army for three days.

Day 7 Tawang Continues

To cover the exciting places, you can book a shared cab or taxi that makes your trip cheaper. You can’t leave Tawang without visiting some destinations like Bum- La Pass, Sela Pass, Tawang Monastery. Early morning start your day with Bum La Pass, at an elevation of 5000m above sea level. The place is one of the most visited places in Tawang when you have the special permit from Office of the Deputy Commissioner in Tawang District, and then Indian army cantonment of Tawang. Here you can experience patriotism and respect towards the Indian soldiers.

You can see the soldiers protecting the border of India in freezing winters. The pass has a historic relevance as Dalai Lama entered India through this Pass.  To reach Bum la Pass, make sure you travel on a clear day when there is no scope of snowfall or rainfall. The road to Bum la Pass is risky so hire an SUV to avoid obstacles and hassles during the drive.

Near the Pass, you can also visit a nearby Lake Shonga-tser, also known as Madhuri Lake.  The lake was named Madhuri Lake after a shooting of a Bollywood song of the movie Koyla by Madhuri Dixit. It is a place where you can click capture attractive pictures near the lake. It is one of the best places for photographers to capture the unseen beauty of Mother Nature. The best time to visit this place is the summers when there is no sign of rain or snow. The lake is surrounded by snow-capped mountains and unexplored valleys. A leisure stroll along the lake in a quiet environment would be interesting.

You can explore a lot of local food near the lake. You can spend a good one to two hours at the Lake. The next destination is the “Jung Falls”. Located 35 km from the center of Tawang City and 3 km from the town of Jung, the Jung Falls is the one of the most adventurous tourist spots, also known as the Nuranang Falls. Jung is the valley that lies between Sela and Tawang. The destination is famous due to a shooting of a Bollywood song of Koyla starring Madhuri Dixit and Shahrukh Khan.

The Nuranang Falls are covered by alpine lakes and snow streams with multiple steep steps into the river. Around the waterfall, you can explore dense green beauty that makes the spot more attractive.

Day 8 Visiting Anni Gompa

Tawang is famous for its rich culture, traditions and history of Buddhism. You can find many nunneries here. They are known as ‘Ani Gompas’. The Brama dung- chung Ani Gompa is one of the oldest nunneries of Tawang. You have to travel 12 kms from Tawang to explore the history of this place. In 1595, the foundation of this nunnery was laid down by Karchen Yeshi Gelek from Tibet. Around 45 nuns or ‘Anis’ live here on the charity given by the people.

5 km from the Tawang , The Gyangong Ani Gompa is under the control of Tawang Monastery. Set on hill surrounded by natural beauty, the nunnery is a home of 50 nuns. You would be stunned to see the pristine and calm atmosphere around the nunnery and simple lifestyle of Buddhist nuns. The Singsur Ani Gompa is another beautiful nunnery built in 1960 by Gonpaste Rimpoche.

Visiting Ani Gompa is a spiritual ride set in the lap of the mountains. Having a traditional history of more than 500 years, it is one of the most religious places in Tawang. Visitors come across the globe to experience divinity and Buddhist culture. You can spend your day meditating or experiencing and understanding the Buddhist culture and life of the nuns. There is so much to learn from this place.

On the way back, if you are not tired, you can explore the Bap Teng Kang Waterfall is situated 80 km away from Tawang. A famous destination, the Tsong-Tsong-La peak is also located at a distance of 90 km from Tawang in Bongkhar at a height of 14,000 feet. Near Tawang, there are many hot springs such as Mago, Thingbu, and Tsechu hot springs. The route to these hot springs is very scenic and attractive. The attractions are suitable for travelers who love trekking and hiking.

Day 9 Explore Zemithang

After eight days of your journey, if you want you can explore more or go back to Bomdila or Tezpur. Some of the destinations like Gorichen Peak, Yak Research Center, and Zemithang are good to explore. Going back to Bomdila or Tezpur, you can also explore Zemithang, 90 kilometers from Tawang. Locally the place is known as Pangchen.

It is a hidden jewel of Arunachal Pradesh located at an altitude of 8000 feet above sea level. The place has amazing scenic views, old monasteries, apple orchards, pine trees and much more. Near the Zemithang village, some offbeat destinations are the Lumpa Village, Thembang, and Muchet Village.

Visit Gorsam Chorten which is the largest stupa with a height of 100ft. It lies in the valley on the banks of Namjang Chu River. It is supposed to have been built in the 12 th century by a monk named Lama Pradhar, The entry is free and open from 9 am in the morning. Zemithang is raw, green and beautiful.

It is home to innumerable birds and animals. On the way back, if you have time, you can also visit the gorgeous Gorichen Peak. It is one of the highest peaks of Tawang. If you love trekking, it is worth a visit.

10 –day trip to Arunachal Pradesh is unforgettable and very tiring. It is good to take rest during the trip. On your 9 th day, make sure you reach Tezpur or Bomdila so that you can reach Guwahati on time. If you are tired, you can stay at Tezpur and move to Bomdila the next morning.

Day 10 Leaving Arunachal Pradesh With Mesmerizing Memories

Keep your last day of the trip very memorable. If you are tired, either you can relax in your room or cover the nearby places. When you reach Bomdila early morning, you can visit some unexplored places. If you are a shopper, you can go shopping in the nearby market.
