My biggest complaint about this movie was how little character or even relationship development happened before the two started a relationship. It couldn’t have been more than 5 minutes into the movie and they had gone from roommates to couple, which would be fine if the movie found a way to make us care and help us invest in their relationship.  The timing and pacing of this just felt way off. 

It’s worth watching, but left me feeling a little disappointed. 

The pros are the plot itself is interesting and is a rare piece of Chinese BL movies.

The R-Rated Girls Trip Movie That Everyone Is Watching On Netflix

An unfortunate reality of adulthood is losing contact with friends. People get jobs, start families, and move away, which makes hanging out with our old buddies more difficult. As such, it's important to make every reunion count, and this theme is explored with hilarious outcomes in "Girls Trip" — a 2017 movie that's enjoying a new lease on life thanks to Netflix. FlixPatrol reported last week that the film was one of the streaming service's top 10 movies in the United States, suggesting that audiences are falling in love with the Malcolm D. Lee-directed comedy all over again.

"Girls Trip" is a feel-good adventure movie with an R-rated spin. The story follows four lifelong friends — Ryan (Regina Hall), Sasha (Queen Latifah), Lisa (Jada Pinkett Smith), and Dina (Tiffany Haddish) — who haven't seen each other for years. They all agree that a reunion is long overdue, so they decide to go to a festival and engage in some drunken mishaps and raunchy escapades.

Critics praised "Girls Trip" for its boundary-pushing qualities, strong characters, and many laugh-out-loud moments. Furthermore, the film is notable for being the first movie penned by African American women to gross over $100 million at the box office. That makes "Girls Trip" historic, and the writing team of Erica Rivinoja, Kenya Barris, and Tracy Oliver deserve credit for bringing a unique vision to the story.

Girls Trip brings a fresh perspective to a familiar genre

"Girls Trip" offers plenty of raunchy moments that will please fans of R-rated comedies, but it's about more than that. While speaking to Script Magazine , co-writer Tracy Oliver explained that it's a love story about sisterhood that aims to empower women, which gives it more heart than those  R-rated comedies that went too far . Moreover, she saw "Girls Trip" as an opportunity to represent a specific demographic on the screen.

"I knew this type of movie was important because it shows a different side of black lives, and specifically, black women," Oliver said. "I have a raunchy sensibility, naturally. I cuss, I drink, and if you have an edible on you, I'll definitely try a piece. I'm the girl that's not afraid to say the word 'd**k,' but as a black woman, I have the added layer of respectability politics that white writers don't have to worry about."

Naturally, the film's success has made some viewers want to see more of these characters. The good news, however, is that  "Girls Trip 2" is in the works with the original cast in tow . Hopefully, the first film's success on Netflix will speed up the process to get the sequel off the ground.

Reflecting on her illustrious career at Cannes Film Festival , Oscar winner Meryl Streep opened up about one of her most iconic on-screen moments — the shampoo scene from “Out of Africa.”  The 1986 Sydney Pollack film starred Streep and Robert Redford as a baroness and a big game hunter who fall in love in a lush desert romance. In what is considered one of the most intimate moments in movie history, Redford gives Streep a steamy salon scrub in a South African river. The actress went so far as to call the moment a sex scene.  “It’s a sex scene in a way, because it’s so intimate. We’ve seen so many scenes of people fucking, but we don’t see that loving touch, that care,” Streep said to big applause during a conversation at Cannes’ Théâtre Debussy.  In an interesting wrinkle, Redford needed some coaching on precisely how to give Streep a shampoo to remember.  “The animal that kills the most men in Africa is the hippopotamus, especially when you come between them and the river,” Streep recalled being warned by production. Nervous for their safety, Redford shampooed Streep as if he was kneading bread on her temples.  “It was not good,” she said. Streep’s longtime hair and makeup artists Roy Hellund took Redford aside and gave him a few pointers. His game improved significantly. “I was in love by take 5,” Streep said of her co-star.

“That was not an unrealistic expectation for actresses at that time,” she continued. “And the only reason that I’m here tonight and that it continued is because of the very gifted artists with whom I’ve worked.”

The iconic and prolific actor has received a record-setting 21 Oscar nominations over her nearly five-decade-long career and has won three, for her performances in “Kramer vs. Kramer” (1980), “Sophie’s Choice” (1983) and “The Iron Lady” (2012).

Streep joins several other industry heavyweights who will be appearing at this year’s edition, including “Star Wars” stalwart George Lucas, who will receive an honorary Palme d’Or at the closing ceremony; Francis Ford Coppola, who is presenting his new film “Megalopolis” in competition; and Paul Schrader, whose “Oh, Canada” is also competing for this year’s Palme d’Or.

Movie Review: A radiant teenage road trip in 'Gasoline Rainbow'

I n sibling directors Bill and Turner Ross ’ latest, “Gasoline Rainbow,” five Oregon teens just out of high school make their meandering way some 500 miles to reach the coast for what’s been billed as the “End of the World” party.

They are like countless young protagonists before them: on the road to find out. But while they share much of the same yearnings and anxieties of American road travelers from “On the Road” to “Easy Rider,” the circumstances of their particular coming of age are uniquely theirs — and what’s on the radio dial is, too. “Dude, I want to listen to some Shakira , bro,” one says from the backseat of their van.

This being the Ross brothers — the makers of the Texas-Mexico border portrait “Western” and “Bloody Nose, Empty Pockets,” in which they brought 22 people to a Las Vegas dive bar and asked them to act as though it was closing the next day — we are in a hybrid film world, part documentary, part fiction. Our characters — Micah, Nathaly, Nichole, Tony, Makai — are nonprofessional actors and their journey is a loosely constructed series of encounters that mostly unfold naturally.

It’s a filmmaking approach that can, in its weaker moments, result in the worst of both worlds: the rambling narrative of documentary and the manufactured quality of fiction. But on the whole, the Ross brothers’ observational, immersive filmmaking gets close to something bracingly real.

In the case of “Gasoline Rainbow,” which opens in theaters Friday, much is expressed by the land the teens traverse. Whether by car or on foot, their travels take them under highway overpasses, through sprawling train yards and along long rows of wind turbines. Global warming is mentioned only once, but it hovers over their uncertain future. They make their way across baren, dry lands and industrial blight. The name of that party is no coincidence.

Bleak as that may be, “Gasoline Rainbow” — which would fit comfortably alongside films like Alma Har'el's “Bombay Beach” and Andrea Arnold's “American Honey” — is most concerned with the question of: So what now? For these young people, unsure of what to do with their lives, getting out on the road provides plenty of answers. The world they’ve been left by older generations may be damaged. “Do you know what the difference is between kids and adults?” one elder tells them. “Adults aren’t supervised.” But there is beauty to be found, like shimmering pools of gasoline, if you're willing to hit the road and make some new friends.

The answer lies most in community — in daring to leave the house, meet strangers and find like-minded souls. Perhaps more than anything, the Ross brothers — with a keen eye for American eccentrics — are interested in gathering together all the most interesting people they can find. And the spirit of camaraderie that results warms just as much as the bonfires gathered round in “Gasoline Rainbow.”

“Gasoline Rainbow,” a Mubi release, is not rated by the Motion Picture Association. Running time: 110 minutes. Three stars out of four.

From botanical gardens to plant sales and garden tours, it’s time to make like the Scarecrow in “The Wizard of Oz” and while away the hours, conferring with flowers.

TOTALLY BOTANICAL

Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens in Boothbay is open for the season, daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Maine Days are May 31 to June 2, when anyone with a Maine driver’s license or state ID gets in for free. Ditto for dads/father figures on Father’s Day (June 16). Advance registration is required. With more than 300 acres of gardens and natural spaces, including a waterfall, there will be plenty to see, smell and bask in the scenery.

Here are more things to do in Boothbay

Viles Arboretum is a botanical garden in Augusta with 6 miles of trails and more than 20 botanical collections. It’s open daily from sunrise to sunset, and admission is free. There are 224 acres with all sorts of flora and fauna to discover. Leashed dogs are welcome, and the visitor center is open from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday.

Viles Arboretum offers medicinal plant walks, and although the May 18 session is full, you can still register for the June 15 and Sept. 14 events, lead by herbalist, homeopath and flower essence practitioner Debra Bluth. Tickets are $25. Advertisement

The Mount Desert Land & Garden Preserve has four areas to explore on its property in Northeast Harbor: the Asticou Azelea Garden (dawn to dusk daily), the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Garden (noon to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday from July 9 to Sept. 8, reservations required), Thuya Garden (dawn to dusk daily, June 15 to Oct. 14) and Little Long Pond Natural Lands (hiking trails and carriage roads open dawn to dusk daily). On June 26, at the Wildflowers of Little Long Pond event, participants can wander around the garden’s fields and forest, spotting wildflowers along the way while practicing how to identify them.

2nd Annual Tree Hugging 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. Deering Oaks Park, Portland. portlandmaine.gov The tree hugging is a family-friendly community gathering to celebrate Portland’s many trees. Park ranger Liz Collado will lead a sensory awakening and forest bathing session. Along with tree hugging, there will be a storytime, and you can touch a forestry truck and meet naturalist Noah Querido and Portland city arborist Mark Reiland. Just down the road, you’ll find Fessenden Park, on the corner of Brighton and Deering Avenues. The tulips have arrived, and it’s worth a visit to see them.

McLaughlin Garden Lilac Festival 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 24. McLaughlin Garden and Homestead, 97 Main St., South Paris, $5. mclaughlingardens.org You’ll find more than 125 varieties of lilacs at the McLaughlin Garden Lilac Festival. Explore on your own or take a guided tour led by a horticulturist. There will also be family-friendly activities, and you can shop for native and unusual plants.

4th annual Woodfords Community Garden Tour 1-4 p.m. June 8. Woodfords Corner Community in Back Cove, Deering Highlands, Oakdale and Deering Center, $20 suggested donation. woodfordscorner.org Presented by Friends of Woodfords Corner, this self-guided tour features at least 10 gardens. As you make your way down the list, you’ll find yourself pleasantly surprised by all of the hidden havens bursting with flowers, plants and impressive yardscaping elements.

Peony Society of Maine 23rd annual Garden Tour 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 8 and 15. Beckett Castle Rose Garden, Singles Road, Cape Elizabeth, $10. gardenconservancy.org You’ll see plenty of roses as well as ocean views at Beckett Castle, which sits right on the water, with views of five lighthouses. The castle was built in 1871, and its rose garden features more than 70 varieties of heirloom roses. A 50-foot stone tower doubles as the rose arbor entrance to the castle.

Tate House Museum’s Annual Plant and Herb Sale 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 18.
