Hi, we're KB Tambo!
Our business began with 13 years living near Machu Picchu, creating KB Tambo, a small hostal and adventure travel business. “Tambo” means rest house, in the Incan language of Quechua.
We know you. You normally travel on your own – heck, you usually are the guide! We get it. We only operate trips where we can offer value. Often, it would cost you more to go on your own. We organize rad trips – either private or in small groups – and excel at the boring logistics that ultimately play a huge role in your trip’s success.
Our trips are crafted for people who want to adventure off the beaten path, learn about and experience different cultures from the inside, and have a freaking good time.
Having fun, Doing Good
In 2020, tourism in Peru shut down almost overnight (along with our biz). Tourism is the third-largest industry in Peru and immediately the people we loved were struggling to put food on the table. We believe the greatest way to make an impact in developing countries is by supporting local businesses and entrepreneurs. Your trip, dinners on the town, and souvenirs for friends all make a huge difference to these people.

First and foremost, we are travelers ourselves, so everything we do is based on one simple concept: how we would like to be treated if you hosted us where you live !
The funnest activities, the best restaurants, and most importantly the advice of a true local to steer you towards the hidden gems and away from the tourist traps.
Your host, Will “KB” Janecek, moved from Minnesota and the trails of Colorado, to Peru in 2004 and spent over a decade living in Ollantaytambo, leading countless adventure and cultural tours. We have grown due to our personal service which simply cannot be matched anywhere. Our style is the perfect blend of attending to the many necessary details, while still staying in the background so that you can have your own trip and not the packaged trip that your “guide” wants you to have.
Our team of Peruvian staff and adventure guides are local inhabitants of Ollantaytambo and direct descendants of the Incas. They are knowledgeable about Incan history, culture, and language – because they still live it everyday. We think that it is this blend of new and old that make Ollantaytambo, and KB Tambo Hotel and Tours, your best choice to plan your once-in-a-lifetime vacation to Peru. Email us today at [email protected] for more information .
In the summer of 2013, KB released one of the definitive works of adventure and culture in the Sacred Valley area around Machu Picchu with the publication of his book. Covering everything from where to change money to hotel suggestions in all the major towns near Machu Picchu, it is a great help in planning your visit.
It also lists 40 trekking, mountain biking, and hiking routes around the Sacred Valley, Cusco and Ollantaytambo area. Ranging from a half day stroll to an epic 10 day exploration to Machu Picchu, this trip has it all.
We are defined by our experience, and our passion, of living in Ollantaytambo near Machu Picchu. With over ten years of getting to know the local people, culture, and mountains – combined with our complete understanding of what travelers want as expats ourselves – we can help your visit to Peru and Machu Picchu truly be a once in a lifetime trip.
Besides being travelers, we are also Trekkers, Explorers, and Mountain Bike Racers. We have served as guides and expedition leaders for several magazines, newspapers, and professional filming sessions. But you don’t have to do anything crazy to do a trip with us, most of our tours are just organizing a week’s visit to Machu Picchu, or a simple half day mountain biking, horseback riding and trekking and hiking trips in the Sacred Valley. And you get the benefit of all that experience, on your own trip. Above all, we are just really passionate for both the local people and the mountains of Peru.
That more than anything explains what kind of company we are. Our love for the area is authentic and is inspired by the accomplishments of the ancient Incas as well as their direct descendants of today – the local people who live in these sacred mountains ( Apus, in Quechua) of the Incas. Few places in the world can boast of such a direct tie to the past – the inhabitants of the mountains where we hike, trek, and mountain bike can almost all trace their roots back hundreds of years.
Meet our Owner:
Will “KB” Janecek escaped an office cubicle in Minnesota, USA and after exploring first most of the world’s mountains, he decided to settle in Ollantaytambo, Peru where he founded a hotel and adventure tour company. His passion is big mountain, Incan history and archaeology. Fortunately, there is plenty of that in the Sacred Valley, Cusco, and Ollantaytambo. KB learned a lot of humility trying to learn Spanish and the local culture and way of life, and says he is embarrassed about his Spanish but proud of the Quechua (Incan language) that he has learned. KB has wandered around trekking and gotten lost in just about every mountain valley within fifty kilometers of Machu Picchu and is extremely knowledgeable about the area, it’s history, and it’s inhabitants. He has spotted several pumas, a bespectacled bear near Choquequirao, and a few more snakes than he would like. He also is an avid downhill bike racer and has been on the podium several times for the world famous Inca Avalanche bike race in Ollantaytambo, Peru.
