How Long To Spend at the Statue of Liberty

the tour guy statue of liberty tour

Short Answer : 3 to 4 hours

When you purchase a ticket to see the Statue of Liberty, you’re actually buying three items: A ferry ride, Statue of Liberty Access, and Access to the Ellis Island Museum. Be sure to keep that in mind.

The Ferry Ride

You’ll start your adventure at either Battery Park in NYC or Liberty State Park across the bay in New Jersey. The ferry works like a hop-on, hop-off bus with stops at Liberty Island (where the Statue of Liberty is) and Ellis Island before returning to the port.

It takes around 15-20 minutes to arrive at each destination. So, there’s just enough time to enjoy some sea views without it being too long.

Liberty Island

Once you arrive at Liberty Island, it’s about a 10-minute walk to the Statue of Liberty. Depending on the ticket you have (see above), you’ll either just walk around the island or climb up the statue itself.

I last visited the area in May of 2021 and I’d say if you are not climbing up, give yourself about 2 hours. Why so long? You’ll want to enjoy the views from the various vantage points.

There’s also a cool little museum to visit where you can see the original torch that Lady Liberty held. There’s an audioguide included in the ticket, but you know how that goes…listen for 5 minutes before you put it in your pocket. We recommend taking a guided tour of the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, which will make your time more memorable and definitely elevate your experience.

Ellis Island

If you’re thinking of skipping this section and just heading back to the city, I strongly urge you to reconsider. When I arrived at Ellis Island, I was very unprepared for the emotional aspect of the visit. My only exposure to the area previously was from the film “The Godfather”. I honestly found Ellis Island to be just as compelling as the Statue of Liberty!

Considering the size of the museum I would allocate 1.5 hours for your visit. The main area you’ll be visiting is all in one building, but it is quite big and it’s on two floors. You will learn all about the influx of immigrants from all over the world (mostly European) who came in search of a better life in America.

How To Get To the Statue of Liberty

Traveling to the Statue of Liberty is pretty simple, you’ll be departing from one of the ferry points located either in Battery Park or Liberty State Park. Before you leave, you should plan your journey to these locations. This way, you’ll be sure to get to Liberty Island early and avoid any unnecessary travel complications or stress along the way.

Battery Park

Battery Park is in Manhattan, at the southern tip of the city. It’s surrounded by the New York Harbor and the Hudson River. You can get there on the subway, bus, or train, and they’re super easy to access from different points around the city and even out of state.

If you head to the MTA website, you can set the destination as Battery Park and add your current location for a display of the best route as well as how to purchase transport tickets (they can be purchased online or at the station kiosks). For a point of reference, from Times Square in New York City, you can take the train southbound from Times Square Station (1, 2, or 3) to the South Ferry Stop. From there, it’s a quick 5-minute walk to Battery Park.

The bus is another good option. From near Times Square, you can take the bus from the 5 Av/W 41 St. Stop to the South Ferry stop as well. The MTA website also provides a detailed schedule of bus routes and times from several different points around the city.

Liberty State Park

Liberty State Park is the other popular point of departure for the ferry that arrives at Liberty Island. This park is located in Jersey City, New Jersey, and similar to Battery Park in NYC, it’s easily accessible via public transport that’s provided throughout the state of New Jersey. Newark Penn Station is one of the most frequently used stations in the state and if you leave from there, you’ll have a relatively simple journey to the destination.

As suggested on the Liberty State Park Website, take the PATH subway to the Exchange Place stop in Jersey City. From there, you’ll take the Light Rail to Liberty State Park, followed by a short trip on the shuttle bus to the ferry slip. In addition to Newark Penn Station, you can also embark from Hoboken Station and Journal Square in Jersey City. If you’re interested in learning about alternative departure points, the New Jersey Transit website is a great resource to plan your route with ease.

Statue of Liberty History

The Statue of Liberty was a gift from France. In 1865, Edouard de Laboulaye, an important French political thinker and supporter of Abraham Lincoln during the American Civil War proposed to create a monument for the United States.

His reasoning was that the victory of the Union in the Civil War reaffirmed the United State’s ideals of freedom and democracy. As a result, honoring the United States would at the same time strengthen the causes for Democracy in France.

Frédéric-Auguste Bartholdi was the man that made it happen. Bartholdi was a famous French sculptor, best known for his work on the Statue of Liberty. He was elected by Edouard de Laboulaye as the sculptor to build a monument that could commemorate the kinship between France and the United States as well as appreciation for President Abraham Lincoln’s work.

Bartholdi previously worked with Laboulaye in the designing of his bust and was excited to work on the project that came to life over the span of a few years. Thus, the Statue of Liberty was born.

How was it built?

The construction of the statue began in France in 1876. Bartholdi enlisted a number of French craftsmen to help in the process of transforming his unique ideas into reality. The various parts of the statue were created separately and then shipped to the United States for assembly in 1885.

Upon visiting New York City, Bartholdi chose Liberty Island as its home because of the high level of visibility, which he described as the “gateway to America.” Most of us can agree that the location was a perfect choice, not only is the statue a signature attraction of the city, it’s a symbol of America and its core ideals.

Once the statue arrived, assembly began very quickly along with the construction of the pedestal upon which it still stands tall today. The process was officially completed in 1886 and celebrated with a large dedication ceremony that was held shortly after. Around a million New Yorkers came out to revel in the unveiling of the statue, a part of a grand history that was yet to fully unfold.

Places To Eat Inside and Nearby

There are limited options to eat when you depart for the Statue of Liberty. If you go in the morning, I suggest eating in the city when you return. A picnic is also a great idea. Here are a few recommendations for places to eat:

On the Ferry: There are snack stands where you can purchase refreshments and healthy snacks

Crown Café : $$ | Quick Snacks —This is the only place on Liberty Island where you can actually get food. You can get burgers, pizzas, and even sushi in this cafeteria-style café.

Ellis Café : $$ | Quick Snacks —Same as the Crown Café, but on Ellis Island.

Have a Picnic : Liberty Island is actually considered a park, so there is lots of open areas. Grab some food from a local gourmet grocery store in New York and have a leisurely lunch in the sun.

Near the Statue of Liberty:

Hotdog Truck: A quick and easy way to eat like the locals. I’ve eaten from them hundreds of times and never gotten sick. You’ll find them all over the place. Go for it!

The Dead Rabbit : $$ | Irish Pub —Great pub food and strong drinks. What else could you ask for after sightseeing all morning long?

Statue of Liberty tour FAQs

If you still have questions about tours to the Statue of Liberty , these FAQs should help to clear up any confusion.

What is the Statue of Liberty ferry schedule?

The ferry departs from Battery Park every 20-25 minutes, starting at 9:00 am, with the last ferry leaving Battery Park at 3:30 pm. The ride to Liberty Island takes 10-15 minutes. Keep in mind the Statue of Liberty ferry schedule varies slightly depending on whether it’s low or peak season, so I recommend checking ahead of time.

What is the best view of the Statue of Liberty?

The answer depends on what kind of view of the Statue of Liberty you want. If you want an up-close view, the best option is to see it from the water, on a boat tour. That said, you can get amazing views of Lady Liberty from the air on a helicopter tour, or from One World Observatory since it’s the best observation deck in NYC that’s closest to Liberty Island.

When is the best time to visit the Statue of Liberty?

The best time to visit the Statue of Liberty is in the morning because you can avoid the crowds and enjoy more time at the landmark.

How do you see the Statue of Liberty for free?

The cheapest way to see the Statue of Liberty is by visiting the parks that overlook Liberty Island, like Liberty State Park in New Jersey or Battery Park in Manhattan. You could also take the Staten Island ferry, which cruises past Liberty Island. While it doesn’t get as close as the Statue of Liberty ferry, it’s a free activity in NYC that grants you decent views.

With that, you have all the info you need to book your Statue of Liberty tour ! I’m sure one of these tours will appeal to you, but if you have any questions, feel free to leave me a comment below. I’ll be happy to help you out! Until then, have a wonderful trip.

The 6 best statue of liberty cruises + tips from a local.

Complete your New York City experience with an exhilarating boat trip.

The Best Statue of Liberty Cruises

Statue of City Cruises boat with the Statue of Liberty in the background.

Courtesy of Statue City Cruises

Enjoy the sea air while you take in stunning New York City views.

The best view of New York might not be in the city itself, but from the harbor looking back at the skyline. Sightseeing cruises are a wonderful reminder that Manhattan is, in fact, an island, and getting out on the water offers a breezy cruise in addition to a fresh vantage point.

With a cold drink in hand, you'll see not just the Statue of Liberty , but also other top city landmarks from the Brooklyn Bridge to One World Trade Center. These boat tours allow visitors to zoom out and get a new perspective, then return to Manhattan refreshed by the wind, water, light and sheer size of the skyline.

There are different boat experiences to match every type of traveler, and here are some of the best.

Best Overall: Statue City Cruises

Statue City Cruises boat at Ellis Island with New York City buildings in the background.

Price: From $24.50

Duration: At your own pace, with ferries departing every 25 to 30 minutes

Standout perk: Admission to the grounds of Liberty Island and Ellis Island are included in this sightseeing cruise and ferry service to Lady Liberty.

The best overall value and experience belongs to Statue City Cruises, which combines the scenery of a sightseeing cruise with the in-depth experience of an attraction tour. Priority entry included with the ticket saves time at the departure point at The Battery . On board the round-trip ferry service, visitors will experience all the sweeping views of a New York Harbor cruise, including skyscrapers of the Financial District and beyond.

The first stop is Liberty Island, home to the Statue of Liberty. Audio tours in a dozen languages are available so you can go at your own pace. Those interested can continue via boat service to Ellis Island, home to the Ellis Island National Museum of Immigration, which contains several fascinating exhibits and the chance to look up your ancestors. Explore at your leisure, then utilize the ferry service back to lower Manhattan.

Local tip: Choose a time as early as possible in the morning for this experience. Ferry service and crowds at Lady Liberty grow throughout the day and swell on weekends; a weekday morning is the best choice.

Best for Adults: Manhattan by Sail's Day Sail – Shearwater

Price: From $60 for adults

Duration: 90 minutes

Standout perk: This cruise provides a true sailing experience on a classic schooner.

Don't be surprised to bump into New Yorkers on the Shearwater, a schooner with tall sails that entices even jaded Manhattanites to go for a ride. Climb aboard this "Gatsby"-era boat, with capacity for 48 people, from the dock at North Cove Marina at Brookfield Place and set out on a sail down the Hudson River and into the New York Harbor. Trade city crowds for the open water with this cruise, complete with a cash bar, that offers up-close views of the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island and the Manhattan skyline.

This experience, conveniently available at different times throughout the day, is a match for adults seeking a more sophisticated sail – think: hip vibe, ample bar, music and an emphasis on service. Several upgrades are available, including sails that offer a wine tasting or live jazz on board. Every sailing offers the chance to snap your photograph with Lady Liberty herself, though you won't be disembarking at Liberty Island.

Local tip: Adults seeking a romantic cruise may want to opt for the Sunset Sail on the Shearwater Classic Schooner.

Best for Families: Circle Line's Liberty Super Express Downtown

Aerial of Circle Line's Liberty Super Express Downtown cruise.

Courtesy of Circle Line

Price: From $29

Duration: 50 minutes

Standout perk: Maximize time with this express cruise, featuring convenient, regular departures.

Families with limited time (or kids with limited attention spans) may appreciate a quick express cruise option. This fast and friendly tour, at just 50 minutes, is a speedy way to get the experience of a boat cruise without it taking a bite out of your day. Hop aboard a boat with Circle Line Sightseeing Cruises – the sister company to New York Water Taxi – and choose between either the open air of the top deck or the temperature-controlled cabin. On a sunny day, the outdoor deck with its sea breeze is the place to be as the boat sails past the Statue of Liberty.

Get unobstructed views of Lady Liberty and snap some family photographs before returning to Pier 16 in the South Street Seaport. Quick, efficient and featuring live narration from a guide, this sightseeing ride is excellent value packed into a short time span.

Local tip: Kids interested in ships may want to visit the South Street Seaport Museum, near the cruise departure point, to see model ships and more.

Best Budget: Staten Island Ferry

The red Staten Island Ferry with the Statue of Liberty in the background.

Courtesy of SIFerry.com

Price: Free

Duration: 25 minutes each way

Standout perk: Get out on the water to see the Statue of Liberty without paying a cent.

The best budget sightseeing cruise isn't a cruise at all, but rather a free mode of local transportation: the Staten Island Ferry. While many of even the most basic harbor cruises start at about $20, this ferry offers a completely free, ticketless cruise in the New York Harbor, bypassing the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island along the way. With service every 30 minutes and no reservations or tickets required, the ferry is not only a steal price-wise, but also a convenient option for travelers who don't want to be tied down to a ticketed departure time.

Stand out on deck and admire views of Lady Liberty during this journey that crosses about 5 miles from Whitehall Street at the tip of lower Manhattan to St. George on Staten Island. The only drawback is that you must depart the ferry in Staten Island and reboard for the trip back to Manhattan – a small "price" to pay for a free boat ride in NYC.

Local tip: Visitors will want to avoid rush hour; these commuter boats can be crowded. Choose a time outside commuting rush hour to maximize the peaceful experience.

Best Luxury: Classic Harbor Line's Statue and Skyline Sightseeing Cruise

Classic Harbor Line ship in front of Statue of Liberty.

Courtesy of Classic Harbor Line

Price: From $64 for adults

Duration: 1.5 hours

Standout perk: This intimate cruise on a 1920s-inspired yacht comes with one complimentary drink included.

Board a yacht at Pier 62 in Chelsea for a polished cruise including views of the New York Harbor's top landmark: the Statue of Liberty. Set sail in style aboard a yacht inspired by the roaring '20s, complete with a solarium and open-air decks as well as a climate-controlled cabin. Cruise down the west side of Manhattan and check out views of The Battery, the Financial District, Governor's Island and more.

Of all the available New York City harbor cruises, guests often praise this one for the quality of the staff running the Classic Harbor Line cruises. With an emphasis on service, an intimate group with a maximum of 80 passengers and an onboard stocked bar, this cruise offers a sophisticated option for seeing Lady Liberty.

Local tip: This cruise departs from Pier 62, which is home to a riverfront carousel for kids and a pretty stretch of Hudson River Park. Stop into Chelsea Market for some picnic supplies and relax in the park before your cruise.

Best Sunset Cruise: Circle Line's Harbor Lights

Circle Line's Harbor Lights cruise at night with New York City buildings in the background.

Price: From $45

Duration: 2 hours

Standout perk: Watch the skyscrapers of the Manhattan skyline flicker to life.

Circle Line offers a variety of cruises with different itineraries. One of the most popular is the Harbor Lights tour, a cruise departing from Midtown Manhattan that includes golden sunset views and a photo stop at the Statue of Liberty. See NYC landmarks like Hudson Yards, Chelsea Piers and One World Trade Center before cruising out into the New York Harbor. You'll get to learn about New York from onboard narration as the itinerary continues past Liberty Island and beneath the Brooklyn Bridge.

While the sun sets and the Manhattan skyscrapers flash to life, relax on the outdoor deck space and visit the onboard bar to purchase beer, wine, cocktails and light snacks. A temperature-controlled cabin is available for hot days. Wi-Fi is free on board and allows for easy posting of sunset photos.

Local tip: This cruise departs from Pier 83 in Midtown Manhattan. Arrive early to visit the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum at neighboring Pier 86.

Hard Hat Tour of the Ellis Island Hospital Complex

Hard Hat Tour of the Ellis Island Hospital Complex

Story by Rebecca Dieumegarde and Steve Markos Hospital photos by Rebecca Dieumegarde and Steve Markos

HARD HAT TOUR LOGISTICS

Save Ellis Island, Inc. , the National Park Service partner organization that helps with the preservation of the buildings on Ellis Island, operates a tour of the Hospital Complex, a collection of dilapidated buildings on the south side of the island. The tour takes its name from the fact that participants must wear hard hats. This is the only way to see the hospital ruins, and aside from the Main Immigration building (now the Ellis Island National Museum of Immigration ), it is the only area of the island open to tourists.

Main immigration building at Ellis Island

Tours are held six times a day from March through December and four times a day in January and February. There is a fee, and you can purchase tickets in advance on the Statue Cruises website, the official ticket vendor and ferry operator for Statue of Liberty National Monument, or in person the day of the tour at the National Park Service information desk in the Immigration Museum (if any tickets remain). I highly recommend getting a ticket in advance, as only fifteen people are allowed on each tour.

The current price of the Hard Hat Tour is $75, and this includes a General Admission ticket for Statue of Liberty National Monument (a $25 value). This allows you to visit the grounds of Liberty Island and the Statue of Liberty Museum  but does not include entrance into the Statue of Liberty itself. If you want to get inside, you’ll need either a Pedestal or Crown ticket, and you must purchase one of these in addition to the Hard Hat Tour ticket. See the Tickets web page here on National Park Planner for complete information on the types of tickets and how to purchase them.

Information desk at the Ellis Island National Immigration Museum

Information desk at the Ellis Island National Immigration Museum

Tickets for the Hard Hat Tour are not that difficult to get because of the extra fee, plus most people come to the park to see the Statue of Liberty. I attended the 1:30 PM tour on a busy Saturday and only 12 of the 15 tickets were sold in advance, though the remaining three tickets were purchased by walk-up customers.

If departing from Battery Park in Manhattan, the ferry stops at Liberty Island before Ellis Island. The trip to Ellis Island itself takes about an hour, but you must also factor in time to go through security before boarding the ferry. If traveling from Liberty State Park in New Jersey, Ellis Island is the first stop (about 20 minutes from the time you board the ferry). You still have to go through security, but the lines in New Jersey are usually much shorter.

The way ticketing for the Hard Hat Tour works, assuming you only want to do the Hard Hat Tour and are not interested in visiting the Statue of Liberty, is that you pick a time to get into the security line at the ferry, and this time corresponds to a Hard Hat Tour. For example, when purchasing a ticket with a 10 AM security check-in, you are purchasing a 12:30 PM Hard Hat Tour. The current March through December tour times are 9 AM security / 11:30 AM tour; 9:30 AM / 12 PM; 10 AM / 12:30 PM; 11 AM / 1:30 PM; 11:30 AM / 2 PM; 12 PM / 2:30 PM. All six departure / tours are available from Liberty State Park, but only four are available from Battery Park. With any of these security / tour time scenarios, if you are leaving from Battery Park, you need to go directly to Ellis Island. Do not stop at Liberty Island. If time allows, you can travel to Liberty Island after the Hard Hat Tour.

Keep in mind that the security check-in time does not mean you are going to get on a ferry at or near that time. Furthermore, during the summer you need to be in line an hour prior to check-in time because there are hundreds of other people with the same ticket (a half-hour prior should work for the off season). Notice that the time between security check-in and Hard Hat Tour is 1.5 hours with a 9 AM check-in and 2.5 hours with a 12 PM check-in. This is because the line gets longer as the day wears on. With a Hard Hat Ticket, or any ticket purchased online, you get to use the Priority security line instead of the general admission security line, which is usually a much longer line. Even so, on a busy day I have my doubts about getting to Ellis Island from Battery Park by 2:30 PM with a 12 PM security check-in time unless they move Hard Hat Tour ticket holders right to the front of the line. I’ve done two Hard Hat Tours, and the reason I don’t know about getting moved to the front is because I have never done a Hard Hat Tour on its own.

Like most tourists, I want to stop at both Liberty and Ellis Islands, and as long as I purchase a 9 AM / 11:30 AM Hard Hat Tour ticket, there is plenty of time to visit Liberty Island after the tour. But what if all that remains is a 2:30 PM Hard Hat Tour and I can’t go through security until 12 PM? There would be no time to stop at Liberty Island after the tour, which doesn’t even end until 4 PM (the park closes at 5 PM). What I must therefore do is purchase a separate General Admission, Pedestal, or Crown ticket with an earlier security check-in time. This is what I’ve always done, which is why I’ve never been in a hurry to get to Ellis Island for my Hard Hat Tour.

I’m about to give you the best advice you are ever going to get if you are departing from Battery Park and want to visit the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island and do the Hard Hat Tour without being rushed. Purchase either an 11:30 AM or 2:30 PM Hard Hat Tour ticket, currently the first and last tours of the day. Either way, your goal is to get on the very first ferry, which currently departs at 9 AM. To do so, purchase a separate 9 AM check-in ticket for the Pedestal or the Crown of the Statue of Liberty—forget General Admission. Even though your ticket states 9 AM security check-in, security actually opens at 8:30 AM. Be in line at least by then, and 8 AM is even better.

When I visited in August, I was in line at 8 AM along with 50 or so other people. Security opened at 8:30 AM, and ten minutes later I was waiting to board the ferry. Had I arrived at 8:30 AM, I’m sure I still would have gotten on the first boat, but better safe than sorry. I booked the 2:30 PM Hard Hat Tour, so I went to Liberty Island first, arriving at 9:30 AM. I had time to visit the Statue of Liberty Museum and go inside the statue with my Pedestal Ticket. I did all I came to do and was on the boat to Ellis Island by 11:30 AM. I arrived at Ellis Island twenty minutes later, had lunch, visited the Ellis Island National Museum of Immigration, and was ready for my Hard Hat Tour without any rushing. I headed back to Battery Park at 4 PM. If you book the early Hard Hat Tour, visit Ellis Island first, then take the New Jersey ferry to Liberty Island and spend the rest of the day visiting the Statue of Liberty.

I just wanted to thank you so much for your wonderful and very thorough blog concerning the Ellis Island Hard Hat tour. You had great tips on how to do both this tour and the Statue of Liberty Pedestal (this is not very clear from the ticket website), and they were spot on! I took the first pedestal tour from Battery Park, had plenty of time at the pedestal (I was the first person in), to enjoy both the pedestal and main museum on Liberty Island, and to catch the 11:40 ferry to Ellis Island. I checked in/signed the waiver for the Hard Hat tour right away per your recommendation, then had plenty of time to tour the exhibits there and have a quick lunch at the café to make the 2:30 Hard Hat Tour (which was great!).  Again, thank you so much for making my visit perfect!

I also attended the Hard Hat Tour on the Saturday prior to the New York City Marathon (November 4th). I got in the security line at 10 AM, and it took two hours to get through security. By the time I docked at Ellis Island it was 1 PM, and my tour was at 1:30 PM. When departing from Battery Park, I highly suggest that regardless of your Hard Hat Tour time, get on the 9 AM ferry one way or another.

If leaving from Liberty State Park in New Jersey, I suggest getting the earliest Hard Hat Tour and visiting the Statue of Liberty afterwards. From Liberty State Park, you shouldn’t have any problems getting to Ellis Island in time for your tour if you arrive at check-in time.

Upon arrival at Ellis Island, head inside the museum and sign in for the tour at the National Park Service information desk. All participants must sign a waiver. The tour operator asks that you arrive one hour prior to your tour, but this is not necessary. You just need to show up early enough to sign your name. I don’t recommend arriving with five minutes to spare, but fifteen minutes or more should be fine. Once you register, feel free to roam around. Just be back at the information desk ten minutes or so before your tour time. Look for a tour guide wearing a hard hat.

The Hard Hat Tour lasts 1.5 hours, and you will be standing for almost the entire time. There are a few stairs, but the walk is not very demanding, so the tour is appropriate for most people. The buildings, however, are not accessible to those in wheelchairs, walkers, or strollers. Also, guests must be at least 13 years old to attend, and those under 18 must be accompanied by a person at least 18 years old. No sandals, flip-flops, or other open-toed or high-heeled shoes are permitted. There are no restrooms at the hospital.

No audio or video recordings are permitted during the tour, but you can take photos without a flash. You cannot bring tripods or other photography accessories.

ELLIS ISLAND HOSPITAL HISTORY

From 1892 until 1954, over 12 million immigrants passed through the Ellis Island Immigration Depot. Upon arrival, each person was subject to a health and psychological inspection. Those who did not pass the initial visual inspection had their shirts or jackets marked with chalk to indicate that further evaluation was required. Approximately 20 percent of the immigrants failed the visual inspection, though most were treated and later allowed to enter the country. Only around 2 percent of the total immigrants coming through Ellis Island were deported, with less than one percent due to having an incurable disease (the rest were sent back for legal reasons).

Ellis Island, which is almost entirely man-made, is comprised of three separate islands. The first island was the checkpoint where all immigrants arrived (the section where the Ellis Island National Museum of Immigration is located). This was the only island that existed from the time the Immigration Depot opened in 1892 up until 1902. During these years, immigrants with infectious diseases were quarantined at hospitals on Hoffman and Swinburne islands.

All buildings on Ellis Island, which were originally made of wood, burned down in a fire on June 15, 1897. The federal government rebuilt the facility using stone and brick, and when it reopened in December 1900, plans were made to build a second island to house Ellis Island’s own 125-bed hospital. This was completed in March 1902. The facility was quickly overwhelmed by patients, and additional buildings were constructed over the next few years. However, those with infectious diseases continued to be quarantined at other hospitals in the Manhattan area.

The third island was built to hold a Contagious Diseases hospital. The facility was completed in 1909 but did not open until 1911 due to a lack of equipment. There was a 200-foot harbor separating the General Hospital from the Contagious Diseases facility, a distance that was believed to be adequate in preventing diseases from spreading. The harbor was filled in to create a small green space in the 1920s.

The Ellis Island hospital closed in 1930, though some of the buildings were used as offices for the FBI. During World War II the island was used by the U. S. Coast Guard, and the hospital reopened to treat wounded soldiers. German and Italian POWs where also interned on the island. After the war, part of the facility continued to be used as a military hospital. It wasn’t until 1954 that Ellis Island was entirely closed and the buildings began to decay due to non use.

See the main Ellis Island web page here on National Park Planner to learn more about the history of the island.

VIRTUAL HARD HAT TOUR

The Ellis Island Hospital complex is located on Island 2 (General Hospital) and Island 3 (Contagious Diseases Hospital). An enclosed corridor makes it possible to walk to any building on the island without venturing outdoors. However, depending on the weather, your tour guide may take the group outside instead, cutting across the lawn from the Main Immigration Building to the first stop on the tour, the restored Art Deco-style Ferry Building from 1936. This is where the ferry originally docked at Ellis Island. The building also had offices for the U. S. Customs Service and a lunchroom.

The current Ferry Building replaced an older, dilapidated building that was torn down in 1935. It was built by the Works Progress Administration, an organization designed to get men back to work during the Great Depression by building public works in urban areas. The Ferry Building was restored between 2000 and 2007 by the Save Ellis Island Foundation. As far as the Hard Hat Tour is concerned, this is where the tour group gets its hard hats before heading over to the General Hospital on Island 2.

The next stop on the Ellis Island Hard Hat Tour is the hospital’s Laundry Outbuilding in New Jersey. Yes, you heard that right. While Island 1 is in New York, Islands 2 and 3 are in New Jersey. The small, multi-gabled Laundry building is first building you come to when reaching the other side of the harbor between Islands 1 and 2. This facility was completed in December 1901. In addition to housing disinfecting and laundry cleaning equipment, the building had dorm rooms for staff, a morgue, and an autopsy room.

The laundry facility consisted of two large washers and one dryer. Sheets were washed, dried, and ironed, and then placed directly on the beds to avoided being folded. This prevented creases from forming, which could lead to bed sores. Three thousand pieces of linen were washed daily.

After the Laundry building, the tour heads outside and stops behind the General Hospital. These are the buildings you see when looking across the harbor from the Main Immigration Building. The lawn area that you will be standing on was once the harbor between Islands 2 and 3, and if you recall from the above article on the history of Ellis Island, in the 1920s this was filled in to create a green space.

The General Hospital is where physically and mentally sick immigrants with non-contagious diseases were treated. This could be anyone from a pregnant woman to a person suspected of being mentally ill. The complex is made up of three buildings that were constructed in stages between 1900 and 1909. The original hospital building, which officially opened in 1902, is the second building from the Laundry Building (the building next to the laundry is the Psychopathic Ward built in 1906). The middle building, the Administration Building, opened in 1907. The third building, which is nearly identical to the original hospital, opened in 1909. Unfortunately, none of these buildings, including the Psych Ward, are stable, so nobody is allowed inside.

Bordering the lawn between Islands 2 and 3 is another restored building called the Shelter. As with the Ferry Building, this was built by the WPA in the 1930s, and as the name implies, it was nothing more than a place to relax on a hot day.

From the General Hospital, the tour cuts across the lawn towards Island 3 where the Contagious Diseases Hospital is located. Built from 1906 to 1911, the Contagious Diseases buildings have been stabilized and are visited on the tour.

As you tour the Contagious Diseases Hospital, you will see various examples of art by a French street artist known as JR. These consist of historical photographs that were enlarged and then wheat-pasted to the walls and windows. Like the decaying buildings themselves, the art will one day peel off and end up in ruins. On one of the windows that looks out into a courtyard between two hospital wards is a photo of children with favus, a disease that affects the scalp. In most cases, this could be cured, but the treatment was extremely painful. Today, fauvs is rare and can be treated with topical and oral medications. (The documentary film Faces Places is about JR and received an Oscar nomination for Best Documentary in 2017.)

A 750-foot corridor runs the length of the Contagious Diseases Hospital, connecting all buildings together. Branching off from the corridor on either side is a series of hospital wards that once held up to 14 beds each. Oftentimes the nurses’ station would be behind a glass window so they could watch the patients without having to unnecessarily expose themselves to contagious diseases. While approximately 3,500 people died on Ellis Island, surprisingly, no doctor or nurse passed away or became infected with any disease.

The first stop at the Contagious Diseases Hospital is at a multipurpose building located at the very northwest corner of Island 3. The building featured a powerhouse, a laundry facility, and a mattress autoclave, a machine that was used to sanitize up to four mattresses at once.

Also located in the corner building is the morgue, a section of which doubled as a medical training facility. With the wide variety of people who passed through Ellis Island, the medical students were able to learn a great deal about ailments from around the world. The multi-tiered area with steps on either side is where students would sit to watch autopsies and other medical demonstrations. This is one stop on the tour where participants can sit while listening to the tour guide.

As the tour continues down the corridor, there are a number of open rooms that you can take a peak inside.

The next stop on the Hard Hat Tour is the Administration Building, the large building at the center of the Contagious Diseases Hospital. The desks and other furniture were left behind by the Coast Guard, which occupied Ellis Island from 1939 to 1946 and again from 1951 until 1954. The 1924 National Origins Act allowed potential immigrants to have their paperwork processed and health and other inspections done in their home countries, thus making a facility like Ellis Island less important. When World War II broke out in 1939, the island was used as a training facility for the Coast Guard, though the hospital continued as a functioning hospital. Once the United Stated entered the war, the hospital was mainly used to treat injured soldiers. The few immigrants on the island were either criminals or terminally ill who were waiting to be deported, or those who somehow lost their papers on the way to America. In 1951 the Coast Guard established a Port Security Unit that remained in operation until all facilities on Ellis Island were closed in 1954.

The hospital kitchen is located behind the Administration Building, and it was here that 1,500 meals a day were prepared and served. Mothers and children were given milk and biscuits twice a day. Not much remains of the kitchen other than a range hood and a few tables. Notice the JR artwork underneath the range hood. This photo is of a ferryboat built in 1904, the Ellis Island , and it is upside down. After Ellis Island closed in 1954, the Ellis Island remained docked at the island, rotting away with the rest of the buildings until it sank during a storm in 1968. The boat was finally removed in 2009. The JR artwork is positioned so that the range hood appears to be the hull of the upside down ferry.

Tour participants can see some of the actual patient rooms, as well as a communal restroom. The rooms themselves had sinks, but no toilet or shower. Patient rooms in the tuberculosis ward had two sinks. The taller one, which was situated closer to the bed, was for vomiting or regurgitating blood, while the lower sink was used for hygiene purposes.

Farther down the hallway are the operating rooms. JR’s artwork depicts surgeons and nurses preparing for an operation, and a photo of a surgeon adorns the entrance to the operating room.

The final stop on the Ellis Island Hard Hat Tour is the home of one of the two head doctors on the island, the Chief of Psychiatric and the Chief of Surgery. There was a second house, but this was torn down. As unlikely as it sounds, both doctors lived within the Contagious Diseases Hospital along with their families.

The Hard Hat Tour concludes by exiting from the buildings and onto the grounds at the south side of the island. From here you can get some nice photos of Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty. Total time for the tour is 1.5 hours, time well spent for those interested in history and old buildings.

How Long Is it to Visit the Statue of Liberty?

When visiting the Statue of Liberty be prepared for a long day. Queues to the ferry can take anywhere from 30 minutes to two hours. The Statue of Liberty and museum take approximately 90 minutes to see and Ellis Island is another one hour to 90 minutes. If you follow our advice, you won’t have to wait for long and can make the most of your time visiting the Statue of Liberty.

Ferry wait times for security at Battery Park and ferries to and from Liberty and Ellis Island take time and with lines, you may have to wait for two ferries to go by before getting one. So the entire experience of visiting the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island could easily be 5 – 6 hours.

Many people book months in advance and if you are visiting during high season, we recommend doing so. Especially when making reservations for the crown and pedestal. If you haven’t made an advanced reservation it is still possible to visit the Statue of Liberty free from hassles.

Give yourself 5 – 6 hours to visit both Liberty and Ellis Islands.

Visit Statue of Liberty or Take a Cruise?

Lines to buy tickets to the statue of Liberty and Ellis Island

Depending on your time in New York, you will need to make the decision of visiting Liberty Island itself or simply taking one of the many statue cruises offered to get a view of her from the water. Whatever you decide, you are going to love it. The Statue of Liberty is the most iconic statue in the world and is not to be missed!

You can book this 90 Minute Cruise of New York City – If you don’t have time to visit the Statue of Liberty, take this cruise to see the iconic sites of midtown and lower Manhattan on a Semi-Circle Cruise. See Lady Liberty and Ellis Island. Sail down the Hudson, cruising around the Battery, and up the East River. You’ll pass under the Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Williamsburg Bridges to the United Nations – and then head back to Pier 83

How to Get to the Statue of Liberty

The statue of Liberty ferry and ticket office is located at Battery Park in Manhattan. Ferries open at 8:30 am and we suggest getting there as early as possible to be at the front of the line.

how to get to the statue of liberty by subway

We caught the Number 1 Red Line Subway from our downtown Manhattan hotel to the South Ferry Station near Battery Park. You can buy a MetroPass at machines in entrances to the Subway. Machines take cash or credit and you can load your pass as needed.

  • Take the 4 or  5  trains to Bowling Green.
  • Take the R train to Whitehall Street.

When you walk out of the subway, there will be several people standing to offer information. Some are selling tours, but others are there to help. If someone tries to sell you a tour, politely decline and go directly to the ticket office. We told them we had a New York Pass already and they left us alone while kindly offering directions.

If you want to relax with a guide, book this Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island Pre-Ferry Tour – This 30 minute guided tour takes you through Battery Park and offers crowd-free access to Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island.

Visit the Pedestal of the Statue of Liberty

statue of liberty ellis island tips reserve your ticket

If you want to go up to the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty, you need to book in advance for your time. It is no extra cost, but times are booked on a first-come-first-served basis. So if you arrive at 8:30 with a bunch of other people, they may already have their reserved time and you will have to wait even longer.

When booking directly from the Government Website, you will receive skip-the-line tickets through security which can save time.

Visiting the Crown of the Statue of Liberty

To visit the crown of the Statue of Liberty tickets cost an extra $3. You should also book ahead of time (we have read up to three months in advance) at the website as times are designated on a first come first serve basis as well. Reservations will also put you ahead of the line to go through security when entering the Statue of Liberty ferry terminal.

Visit the Statue of Liberty Museum

Visit the Museum at the Statue of Liberty

Visiting the Statue of Liberty Museum is included in your ferry service tickets to the islands, and you don’t have to schedule a time to go in.

Get the New York Pass

new york pass

Our New York Pass included our visits to the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, and ferry service to each. If you don’t have a New York Pass, we suggest getting your tickets ahead of time at www.statuecruises.com . Or if you are there early in the morning, you can purchase directly from the ticket office inside the Clinton Castle.

Note: The New York Pass does not offer “skip the line tickets.” When you do arrive at Battery Park, you still need to go inside the Castle to get your boarding pass, so you will have to stand in line for tickets regardless.

Take Guided Tours of the Statue of Liberty

Viator offers guided tours of Liberty Island and Ellis Island. Reserve Line Access boarding on the ferry to Liberty Island.

It includes a guided tour of the Statue of Liberty National Monument and Ellis Island,  exhibits at the Great Hall inside the Immigration Museum on Ellis Island, and early boarding.

Security at The Statue of Liberty Ferry

statue of liberty ellis island tips ferry

Going through security to board the ferry is similar to going on a plane. Open bottles of water are not allowed. We had to drink our water before going through security. Either, keep your bottle sealed until after you go through security or bring a reusable bottle that has no liquid in it and fill it up afterward. If you are unsure about what to bring leave it in the hotel room. If it is confiscated at security, you will not get it back!

  • No large bags are allowed on the ferry.
  • No sharp objects are allowed through security.
  • No drones are allowed on the ferry.

Best View from the Ferry to the Statue of Liberty

ellis island tips deb

If you want the best view on the way out to Liberty Island, stand on the right-hand side facing the dock . Most people go to the left looking out at the water, but once the boat moves, the best views are from the right.

Outside, upstairs or at the back is best for views of the New York skyline on the way out to the Statue of Liberty. Read more: 30 Best New York Views – Where to See the Manhattan Skyline

There is a snack bar on the ferry where you can buy snacks and drinks. The toilets on the ferry are clean and in good working condition.

At the Statue of Liberty

statue of liberty and new york skyline

When you arrive at Liberty Island, be sure to check the ferry times as you walk out for your trip onward. We planned for 90 minutes at the statue so we kept an eye out for the ferry that was scheduled 2 hours after our visit. That way we could have a 30-minute cushion should the line be too long (which it always is).

The views of Manhattan from The Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island

It was a pleasant stroll walking around Liberty Island seeing the views of Lady Liberty from every possible angle. She really is an impressive sight. The views of the Manhattan skyline are outstanding from here so be sure to take it in from every angle.

The Statue of Liberty Museum

The Statue of Liberty Museum opened in May 2019 and your ticket does include access to this museum for free. Inside there are interactive displays, a 10-minute multimedia display, and a gallery showcasing the history of how it was made and what Lady Liberty represents. The inspiration gallery where the original torch is on display was our favorite.

The face of Lady Liberty in the Statue of Liberty Museum

Before leaving the museum, we went outside to the rooftop deck for outstanding views of the statue and the skyline. When visiting Liberty Island, don’t miss going to the museum.

Ellis Island Immigration Museum

The next stop on the tour is Ellis Island. The ferry to Ellis Island is free when you leave from Liberty Island, and you can either get off the boat to explore or take it directly back to Battery Park. A lot of people skip this, but we loved our visit to Ellis Island.

The Great Hall – Ellis Island

ellis island tips

The Great Hall is the first thing you will see on Ellis Island. Just like the 12 million immigrants who saw it for the first time when arriving in America between 1892 – 1924. This Ellis Island Museum is dedicated to the people who waited for access to the United States searching for a better way of life.

ellis island entrance in New York City

Today, many people come to Ellis Island to trace their ancestry. Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately) no Bouskills or Corbeils were on the list of immigrants who came through here.

Great hopes were placed on life in the new world, but the new immigrants faced many hardships from child labor, low wages, and cramped quarters. But it was here that many began their American Dream.

Make your way up to the second floor for an excellent collection of photos displaying the history of Ellis Island. The images are haunting and inspiring all at once.

On the third floor, you will see a recreation of the sleeping quarters for new immigrants awaiting entrance to New York City. Beds were stacked 3 berths high on canvas cots that could be raised during the day. The third floor also offers an overhead view of the Grand Hall where people awaited their hearings regarding citizenship.

We spent quite a while perusing the photos and history of Ellis Island. While many people skip it, if you have the time, we say don’t miss it.

Tip for visiting Statue of Liberty Visit early in the morning

By visiting the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island first thing in the morning, we had the rest of the day to explore more sights in Manhattan. From the Statue of Liberty, we recommend visiting Wall Street including the Charging Wall Street Bull, and the 9/11 Memorial and Museum.

These are all within walking distance from Battery Park and are must-see attractions when visiting New York.

Thanks so much for these wonderful photography and travel tips. I will be using this for our trip.

Excellent blog!!

Really informative article! I feel if you have a bit of money to spare, taking a helicopter ride can be a great idea. It gives you a great view of the statue of liberty. Plus, you do not have to wait for hours in lines!

Such great information of the Liberty and Ellis Island , Thank you! Dave and Deb for sharing .

Hey, thank you for this article, it is really one of the most comprehensive on the topic. You can not go to New York and not visit the Statue of Liberty or Elis island, so we are planning to see both places, but we were a little worried bout the logistic aspect. You covered that, so now we are relaxed and ready to start our summer vacation. Thanks again and i love your travel blog!

Hello Dave and Deb Thank you for sharing your Great post, Love to read your post, you are using so normal words which is easy for everybody.

Thank you very much.

You are justa amazing.Your advice, your trips, your tips ara awasome..Thank you planetD..Greetings from Greece.I will visit toronto for 5 days and New York for 7 days at octomber.Do you think its fair enough??

Wow, things have really changed since I visited the Statue of Liberty! There were no special passes or several month waits to visit the crown. Now that I think of it, I visited in February of 2001, so it was cold and that was before 9/11. It’s sad to see the skyline without the Twin Towers. .-= Jennifer Barry´s last blog ..Trains- Cars and Funiculars- Getting Around Santiago =-.

Two years ago, with New York City Pass tickets, we had been to Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, but we too couldn’t go upto the crown. But still being near the famous Statue and strolling there was a great feeling. Visiting Ellis Island Museum was also a memorable experience.

Living uptown in NYC, I hardly ever even get a glimpse of the beautiful Statue of Liberty. It’s a shame because she’s so beautiful. Glad you got a chance to visit her.

My grandfather came through Ellis Island (from Poland at age 11) — I find it so exciting that he was part of such a momentous time in US history. His story could have been lifted out of a textbook. He really embodied the American Dream of that era. .-= Travelogged´s last blog ..Celebrating July 4th in Cold Spring- NY =-.

Wow, that is amazing Liz. It was quite a monumental time in history. A whole country was being built on immigrants and what an amazing country it turned out to be.

Correction: if you want to go up to the crown you have to book MONTHS in advance (in the summer)! We booked about 5 weeks ahead and could only get into the base. .-= Carlo Alcos´s last blog ..New York City Rules- Signs of Civilization =-.

Wow! Thanks for the tip. 5 Weeks is a long time in advance. Sorry you didn’t make it to the crown, but the base seemed like it was worth it too. The crowds seemed very light up there.

One more tip: If you’re going up the statue, do NOT bring a backpack. They will make you check it…they’ll let you in with a small bag like a purse. But the security is stricter than at an airport (they even have body scanning devices).

Carlo! Thanks for the great information. We didn’t bring a backpack so we didn’t even think of this advice. But you are absolutely right, I remember hearing announcements that you will have to check large bags and backpacks. Security is very strict at the Statue of Liberty. It is much better to go with less. Thanks again for the great tips!

Oh, this is a really nice post! I just love your photos! I’ll keep this post in mind for future trip there 🙂 .-= Lifecruiser Travel Blog´s last blog ..The Farms Wild Cats =-.

I really wish that I’d had time to use the CityPass – it really is an amazing deal but I didn’t allow enough time – next time I’m in NYC I’ll know better.

Seeing Lady Liberty was also a highlight for me, although I only got to see her from the Ferry, it was still a moving sight. Good to know that you have to plan ahead if you want to visit the platform or crown – I also have distant memories of peeking out from the crown when I was a young child on a field trip in grade school that included Liberty & Ellis islands, the Empire State Building, and the UN. .-= Trisha Miller´s last blog .. Know How To Do Something Enter This Contest- =-.

The good news is your CityPass doesn’t expire. You have 9 days from the first use to get it all in. It seems that we all have the distant memory of peaking out the crown. That sounds like an amazing school trip.

14 Important Statue of Liberty Tips: What NOT to Do! (2024)

Last Updated: January 2, 2024 //  by  Ashley Smith 72 Comments

So you’re planning on visiting the Statue of Liberty and want to know all the best Statue of Liberty tips? All the mistakes to avoid? Well, having visited three times in four years I have all your answers!

V isiting the Statue of Liberty had always been a goal of mine and always topped my NYC bucket list . She’s my favorite New York City landmark and  my favorite color. She was a gift from France and remains a powerful symbol of freedom, democracy, hope and the American dream: reading books alone on your private island while wearing nothing but a sheet and a crown.

Table of Contents

Being a child of the ’80s, my first memory of the Statue of Liberty was seeing her walk through New York Harbor on the way to the Manhattan Museum of Art with the help of American soul singer-songwriter Jackie Wilson. That remains, to this day, my very favorite scene from Ghostbusters 2 .

Did Jackie Wilson or the music video for Michael Jackson’s “Black or White” have a similar lasting effect on you? If so, allow me to help all of your childhood dreams come true. Here are my best Statue of Liberty tips and all the things you should avoid when visiting the Statue of Liberty.

statue of liberty tours reddit

1. Don’t confuse the ticket types

I did, but just on my first time–the sole reason I only made it as far as Lady Liberty’s feet. That’ll be funny in a minute…

Where to get Statue of Liberty tickets

Statue City Cruises is the official ticketing site for visiting the Statue of Liberty. I can’t emphasize enough the need to reserve your tickets in advance. They do sell day-of tickets on site if it’s absolutely necessary but really, do you actually enjoy mobs of tired, cranky tourists and standing in line all day?

statue of liberty tours reddit

Which Statue of Liberty tickets to buy

For starters, you need to answer this question: How far in advance are you booking these tickets?

Are you visiting the Statue of Liberty tomorrow? (Oh hey, look at that–you don’t have a choice as to which ticket you can get.) Planning a trip six months from now? (Well, now you’ve got some thinking to do!)

statue of liberty tours reddit

Statue of Liberty ticket options

There are, technically, three ticket options. But they’re all (basically) the same price. Ergo, you should get the one that gets you the most access (ahem, Crown Reserve). It’s just simple math, people. But if you don’t have the time or the desire to see it all, you can certainly get the most basic ticket as well. You do you.

The graphic above shows what kind of access each type of Statue of Liberty ticket gets you.

All prices below are accurate as of January 2024 and represent adult general admission. (There are discounted prices for seniors and children.)

statue of liberty tours reddit

Crown Reserve tickets – $24.80

The Crown Reserve ticket gets you all the way up into Lady Liberty’s crown and everything on down. Start by admiring her brain–the way you should all women. Even the ones who wear togas.

With the Crown Reserve tickets you get:

  • Full access to the Statue’s crown and pedestal
  • Full access to the grounds and museums of both Liberty and Ellis Islands
  • Priority access into the screening facility
  • An audio guide for both the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island
  • And round-trip ferry service

statue of liberty tours reddit

Pedestal Reserve tickets – $24.80

The Pedestal Reserve ticket gets you up to Lady Liberty’s big feet and no further.

With the Pedestal Reserve tickets you get:

  • Full access to the Statue’s pedestal (and no higher)
  • Priority entry into the screening facility
  • An audio guide for both

statue of liberty tours reddit

General Admission tickets – $24.50

Nothing higher than ground level for you, I’m afraid.

A General Admission ticket gets you:

  • Access to both Liberty and Ellis Islands
  • And round-trip ferry service for the same price as the Pedestal Reserve

Important! For visiting the crown, you’ll be asked to show your ID a handful of times and the name on each visitor’s ticket must match the name on that person’s ID. So, when purchasing tickets, be sure to input each person’s name correctly. Got it? Besides, isn’t getting carded after 30 also part of the American dream?

2. Don’t miss the chance to save tons of money

Umm, in case you haven’t figured this out yet… New York City is expensive . I think we can all agree that every penny saved here is worth it. The good news is that there are two brilliant ways to save tons of money on your New York City sightseeing . Those are: the New York CityPASS and the New York GoCity Pass .

And though Statue City Cruises is the only official ticket seller for the Statue of Liberty, they have authorized CityPASS and GoCity to include their tickets in their money-saving packages. Woohoo!

statue of liberty tours reddit

New York CityPASS

The New York CityPASS is a discount booklet that saves you 40% on NYC’s top attractions that you’re probably going to be visiting anyway. One of the awesome things it includes are Statue of Liberty General Admission tickets.

If you’re simply pressed for time while visiting the Statue of Liberty but still want to see her up close and/or also check out Ellis Island to see which ancestors you can blame for moving your family to North Dakota long, long ago, the New York CityPASS will get you there.

(Besides the Statue of Liberty, it also includes wildly discounted admission to a bunch of other top NYC attractions that are no doubt on your own personal New York bucket list .)

Check out the New York CityPASS here.

New York GoCity Pass

I’ve been a diehard CityPASS user for as long as I can remember, but the GoCity passes may even have them beat. The New York GoCity pass works the same way in that it’s one all-inclusive pass you buy at a much discounted rate, and it includes admission to tons of New York City’s best attractions.

And we’re not talking like lame B-squad attractions either–these are all the most popular things to see and do in NYC. And it includes a bunch of walking tours and other unique activities too. Just saying.

The New York GoCity Pass also includes General Admission Statue of Liberty tickets but also an exclusive “Secrets of the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island” walking tour!

3. Don’t wait until the last minute to book your tickets

They sell a limited number of tickets to visit the Statue of Liberty, fewest of which are the Crown Reserves. These tickets to the hottest headpiece in town sell out months in advance .

I’m a hardcore procrastinator, yes, but when you’ve longed to channel your inner Peter Venkman as long as I have, you make exceptions. And this is possibly the most important of all my Statue of Liberty tips .

Consider the Statue of Liberty the Taylor Swift of national monuments–only, seeing this lady live won’t cost you a year’s rent and the naming rights to your first-born child. “Hi, meet my daughter, Bank of America Smith.”

When to book Statue of Liberty tickets

Crown Reserve tickets: 3-4 months in advance Pedestal Reserve tickets: 3-4 weeks in advance General Admission : 3-4 days if you must but seriously, try to get one of the better ones.

4. Don’t discount the crown

If you’re physically able, not the least bit claustrophobic or afraid of heights, and have enough advance notice, you must go into the crown! Another of my personal favorite Statue of Liberty tips .

To me, going up to the Statue of Liberty crown is the whole experience. And since they don’t give out crowns to spelling bee runners-up or science fair honorable mentions this is the closest I’ll ever get to actually wearing one.

Besides, it’s not every day you get to climb a human-shaped building. And men, you’ve always wanted to know what goes on inside a woman’s head so now’s your chance!

Is it worth visiting the Statue of Liberty crown?

OK but you’re already pressed for time in NYC, is it actually worth going up to the Statue of Liberty’s crown? Absolutely! My experience visiting the Statue of Liberty greatly impressed me and I now recommend it to everyone.

My time in the crown exceeded all expectations, and that’s no easy feat for someone whose signature memory of this monument involves her walking  through Manhattan, crushing cop cars and the hopes and dreams of one Vigo the Carpathian.

What visiting the Statue of Liberty crown is like

I had imagined a steady sweaty stream of tourists climbing up to the crown and down, being tightly packed into her hollow head like John Cena into a fitted button-up. Instead, I was incredibly surprised to find only 10-15 people are allowed into the crown at one time, with the place all to ourselves for a period of about 20 minutes.

Rather than being given just the chance to pass through in an upsettingly subdued tourist conga line, we were free to take our time with photos and had two guides inside the crown all to ourselves.

statue of liberty tours reddit

They answered everyone’s questions and spent time teaching us all the literal ins and outs of the Statue of Liberty that you just can’t learn watching late ’80s scifi comedies. When everyone felt they’d had enough time inside the crown, we collectively made our way down. Cha cha cha!

It was such an interesting, intimate experience and not at all like you’d expect. It was definitely less tourist-attraction and more National Park. Less feeling the hot breath of a stranger on the back of your neck and more like finding a $20 bill in last year’s windbreaker.

The only thing missing was Jackie Wilson lifting me higher and higher. I will not forget my Walkman next time.

How to get to the Statue of Liberty crown

A note about visiting the crown: there is no elevator to the crown . From the pedestal you must climb an additional 162 steps to the top via a narrow staircase and a maze of cast iron framework. Like any good woman, Lady Liberty doesn’t make it easy for just anyone to get into her head.

Statue of Liberty crown tickets

In case this wasn’t clear in the last section, if you want to go into the crown of the Statue of Liberty, you must purchase Crown Reserve Tickets . And you must do so as early as possible as there’s a limited number and they go fast.

5. Don’t underestimate the path to the crown

162 steps may sound like small potatoes, sure, but keep in mind this is up a steep, narrow corkscrew staircase with very low overhead that puts all Italian church towers to shame. I’m 5’3″ and this stairway still presented a challenge.

As you can see in the pictures, I couldn’t even fit one of my size 7 shoes entirely on the steps. I kept thinking of Shaquille O’Neal and his 7’1″ body, his size 22 shoe, and how many Icy Hot patches he would need after this. It’s just not possible. Not even a genie from a magic boombox could help him.

6. Don’t head to the Statue of Liberty without knowing where you’re going

The white tent-like building behind Battery Park is your destination–the circus inside not unlike the interior of a clown car. But before you can enter the big-white-top you must pick up your tickets from will call.

And since my readers are the smartest around, you’ve got reservations so you get to walk past the freak show that is the line of people trying to buy same-day tickets to the Statue of Liberty.

Where to pick up Statue of Liberty tickets

When you arrive at Battery Park, head to Castle Clinton to pick up your reserved Statue of Liberty tickets. Don’t confused it with… oh, nope, it’s the only walled castle in downtown Manhattan . Will call for reserved tickets is at WINDOW 6 only.

Knowing where to go ahead of time may sound obvious, but on our first time visiting the Statue of Liberty we almost missed our reservation time after thinking we’d “be able to figure it out when we got down there”–my modus operandi.

Do This, Not That // Tips for Visiting the Statue of Liberty // Map

Where to get in line for the Statue of Liberty

Got your tickets? Now get in line. I can’t tell you where that will be exactly since it all depends on when you’re visiting the Statue of Liberty. All I can say is: see the above, extremely informative and well-made graphic.

On my first visit–a Friday in early September–my friend and I walked right into the white tent. On my second visit–the Saturday of Thanksgiving weekend–the line started where I show the line sometimes starting.

statue of liberty tours reddit

What you need to know about the Statue of Liberty line

It moves quickly.

So it winds around the building? You’ve got a reservation; you’re fine. You won’t be in it for more than a couple of minutes.

Don’t get in line until your reserved time

I know, it’s long and you’re getting anxious. You think that by the time you get to the front of it, 30 minutes will have gone by and you’ll be set. But, there are line attendants and if you’re in that line even five minutes before your reservation, they’ll make you get out.

7. Don’t be fooled by the people outside the subway

When exiting the South Ferry subway station, chances are you’ll be bombarded by people trying to sell you tickets for visiting the Statue of Liberty. They’ll be in your face, shouting, trying to block your way.

Just because these people wear vests with words on them doesn’t mean they’re not there to rob you. They’ll show you their “credentials,” but you’re smart; you know that any ol’ Joe Schmo with a printer and access to the laminator at FedExOffice can get “credentials.” It’s called a hustle. It’s also how I ended up on stage at an Incubus concert one time.

statue of liberty tours reddit

The Statue of Liberty ticket scam

They’ll tell you the Statue of Liberty is sold out and the only way you can get tickets is through them. The aggressive strangers on the street. Outside the subway.

You’ll push past them because you ain’t no fool. You’ll try to ignore them but, after they continue to follow you down the street, you’ll finally say something like, “I have reservations, leave me alone!” Then they’ll scream at you for a good ten seconds and call you a “b*tch” as you walk away.

I’m going to let you in on a not-so-little secret: no official employee of the American National Park Service would ever call you a b*tch for already having tickets to their park . These people are scammers who make, I can only imagine, craploads of money off gullible tourists. But you aren’t one of these.

There are numerous reports (and arrests) on this particular band of hooligans and you can find more information on this scam here . Don’t be dumb. Get your tickets straight from the source.

statue of liberty tours reddit

8. Don’t forget there will be airport-like security

Upon entering the big white tent, you’ll be subjected to your first round of airport-like security screening. You travel; this is nothing new. Everything, in the bin. Pockets, empty. Shoes, off. Jackets, off. Belts, off.

Prepare for this and you’ll make not only yours but everyone else’s trip to the Statue of Liberty go a lot smoother. Statue of Liberty tips, security edition:

  • Leave backpacks and shopping bags at your hotel. These aren’t allowed inside the Statue of Liberty anyway. To enter the crown you’re allowed only a small purse and a camera.
  • Don’t wear 45 gold bangles you’ll have to painstakingly remove one by one. Ahem, lady directly in front of me.
  • Don’t get redressed right there in front of the metal detector. Move. Along.

Once on Liberty Island you’ll have to repeat the security screening process before actually entering the Statue of Liberty. An important piece of advice for the second security screening: get in front of Mrs. T this time. I pity the fool that ends up behind her.

statue of liberty tours reddit

9. Don’t ride inside the ferry

And by this I mean: venture out! The ferry to and from the Statue of Liberty is not simply a means to an end. To use an incredibly clichéd phrase: “It’s not the destination, it’s the journey.”

Board the boat and snag one of the outer, top level spots if you can . Don’t stay inside, behind the green glass where it’s temperature regulated and smells like hotdogs. The ones who do are the same people who are probably going to pay for a sightseeing cruise later on in the week. For three times as much. From the crooks outside the subway.

Consider your ferry ride the free sightseeing cruise that it is. From the outside on the top level you’ll be treated to fantastic views of Lower Manhattan and all around the Statue of Liberty. I’m telling you, she has no bad sides. (Except from underneath where she kinda looks like Jabba the Hutt. ⇣⇣⇣)

statue of liberty tours reddit

10. Don’t forget there’s an elevator

From ground level to the top of the pedestal it’s 215 steps. However, there is an elevator up to the pedestal should you need it. It’s clearly marked, located beneath the pedestal behind the giant torch, and attended by an expert button-pusher.

It’s only from the pedestal to the crown where stairs are the only option. This is where the Shaq-friendly portion of the ride comes to an abrupt halt.

statue of liberty tours reddit

11. Don’t let the park ranger forget to give you the crown wristband

In order to enter the Statue of Liberty, you’ll have to check in with a National Park ranger before entering the second security screening. He or she will compare your tickets with your IDs and, if you have a Crown Reserve ticket, should give you the wristband you’ll need to get past the pedestal.

However, our ranger never gave us the wristbands we didn’t know we needed. This could’ve been very bad and time-consuming for us (read: exiting the park completely, waiting in line to reenter and having to go through security screening again).

statue of liberty tours reddit

Instead, after much convincing that we were actually supposed to be there, this resulted in the four of us being personally escorted to the crown. The Statue of Liberty staff is nothing if not accommodating but had this been a busier day there’s no way this would’ve happened.

If you have Statue of Liberty crown tickets, make sure the park ranger at the desk inside the Liberty Island security tent next to the gift shop gives. you. a. wristband.

statue of liberty tours reddit

12. Don’t underutilize the guides

As I mentioned earlier, at the top of the crown there are two guides that know everything there is to know about the Statue of Liberty. It won’t be as entertaining as this episode of Drunk History but at least you’ll know your facts are straight.

They’ll spend time show-and-tell-ing you fun facts you’d never know otherwise. Like, how her shell is only the width of two pennies pressed together and whether or not she’s naked under that toga. She is French, you know that.

The Statue of Liberty is not so much a tourist attraction as it is a member of the National Park Services. The ranger guides love their jobs and above all want you to learn and enjoy your time. Come with questions! Come with jokes! But come with minimal jewelry!

statue of liberty tours reddit

13. Don’t skimp on how many photos you take

You’re going to see Lady Liberty from just about every possible angle and girl’s got it going on! She just can’t take a bad picture. Take advantage of this perfect artistic subject.

She’s beauty and she’s grace. She’s Miss United States!

statue of liberty tours reddit

14. Don’t forget about Ellis Island

Access to the Ellis Island Immigration Museum is included with your Statue of Liberty ticket. After boarding the ferry on Liberty Island, the next (and only other) stop is Ellis Island. Between the years of 1892 and 1924 Ellis Island was the chief gateway into the United States for over 100 million immigrants.

If you wish to check it out, get off here. (Don’t hold your breath for a private tour with Will Smith though.) If not, the ferry will continue on to Manhattan where you started this adventure.

And if you’re worried you won’t have enough time to see both, check out my post on how to visit Ellis Island in a hurry for many time-saving tips.

The 5 Common Mistakes To Avoid When Visiting The Statue of Liberty And Ellis Island

Visiting the Statue of Liberty is a popular tourist activity when travelling to New York City with kids (or without). Elizabeth had done research and a speech on the Statue of Liberty in 3rd grade, so it was especially important to her that we visit while in New York.

Seeing the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island was a highlight of our family trip, but could have easily been a disaster if we had made some of the most common mistakes people make when visiting the Statue of Liberty.

Mistake 1: You Don’t Purchase Statue Of Liberty Tickets In Advance

Visiting the Statue of Liberty is a must for many when in New York City. Avoid these BIG mistakes people make when visiting the Statue of Liberty. #statueofliberty #ellisisland #newyorkcity #nyc #visitnyc #ladyliberty

Tickets for the Statue of Liberty Crown and Pedestal Access sell out months ahead of time. This is especially true during the busy summer season. Crown Access tickets are extremely limited and Pedestal Access tickets are also sold in small quantities.

We purchased our Statue of Liberty tickets over 2 months in advance and still only got one of the few remaining Pedestal Access tickets. Crown Access tickets were sold out from the time we booked until over two months past our scheduled trip.

Statue Of Liberty Crown Access Ticket

Anyone with a ferry ticket can walk around Liberty Island. However, to have any access to the Statue of Liberty you must purchase your Pedestal or Crown Access tickets well in advance. The most sought after ticket is the Crown Access ticket. A Crown Access ticket allows a limited number of people each day to walk up the 393 stairs inside the Statue of Liberty to The Statue of Liberty’s crown viewing area.

Please note: The climb to the Statue of Liberty crown is approximately 27 stories. There is elevator access from the ground to the pedestal area, but to reach the crown is another 162 steps. Temperatures inside the Statue of Liberty can be up to 20°F (11°C) higher than outside.

Statue Of Liberty Pedestal Access Ticket

The other way to get up close to the Statue of Liberty is to purchase a Pedestal Access ticket. The Pedestal Access ticket allows you to walk up (or take an elevator) to the top of the Statue of Liberty’s pedestal. This pedestal is higher up than I had anticipated and provided some stunning views of New York City. The pedestal has a very narrow walkway that goes all the way around.

Visiting the Statue of Liberty is a must for many when in New York City. Avoid these BIG mistakes people make when visiting the Statue of Liberty. #statueofliberty #ellisisland #newyorkcity #nyc #visitnyc #ladyliberty

Visiting the pedestal allowed us to see more of the detailed design on the Statue of Liberty. We admired how the copper was formed to look like flowing fabric and could see how the pieces were riveted together. The pedestal also allowed us a unique view of Lady Liberty. I love some of the pictures we took looking up at her from the pedestal.

Although I was disappointed that we were unable to get Crown Access tickets, I am grateful we were able to get the Pedestal Access tickets. We enjoyed being able to enter part of the Statue of Liberty structure.

Mistake 2: You Buy 3-Day Flex Pass Tickets

The 3-Day Flex Pass tickets are sold at Battery Park in the Castle Clinton National Monument. These tickets allow you to choose any time in a 3-day window to visit Ellis Island and Liberty Island. It does not allow any access to the Statue of Liberty.

I can see how tempting it is to buy the 3-Day Flex Pass ticket. These tickets don’t limit your ferry ride to a specific time or day. However, the security line for this type of ticket is extremely long.

I did not realize when we pre-purchased our Reserve Pedestal Access tickets that those tickets would allow us to enter a shorter security screening line to board the ferry boat at Battery Park. We heard the lines could be very long, so we arrived at Battery Park 90 minutes before our scheduled pedestal access ticket time.

As we approached the area near the ferries I noticed a huge line of people waiting. After walking hundreds of feet along this line I finally found a Statue Cruises employee. The employee asked to see our ticket.

The staff member saw we were a Reserve Pedestal Access ticket.  She then directed us to a special queue, which although a long line, was much shorter than the Flex Pass ferry ticket line. Our Reserve Pedestal Access ticket with a much shorter security line still took us 30 minutes of waiting before reaching our security screening.

Please note: Any pre-purchased Reserve Ticket (Crown, Pedestal, or Reserve) from Statue Cruises will allow access to the Reserve Ticket security line. This Reserve Ticket line is generally much shorter that the one for 3-Day Flex Pass ticket holders.

Most of the security line is uncovered. If it is hot and sunny, the line can be very uncomfortable. Make sure to stay hydrated and consider bringing an umbrella to have shade for your wait.

Mistake 3: You Are Not Prepared For The Security Screenings

Visiting the Statue of Liberty is a must for many when in New York City. Avoid these BIG mistakes people make when visiting the Statue of Liberty. #statueofliberty #ellisisland #newyorkcity #nyc #visitnyc #ladyliberty

Everyone taking a ferry to Liberty Island or Ellis Island must go through a security screening process before boarding the ferry. The security screening is similar to what you would expect at a U.S. airport.

All bags go through an x-ray machine and every person must go through a metal detector. After successfully passing this security screening you can finally enter a queue to board a ferry.

If you have Crown or Pedestal Access Tickets you will go through one last security screening on Liberty Island. You will enter a small outer building where backpacks, bags, and most purses must be secured in a locker before you are allowed to approach the Statue of Liberty access area.

The lockers work like those at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios where you reserve a locker with your fingerprint as the key. These lockers cost $2 per 2 hours when we visited. The lockers require cash and do not take credit cards (this information is correct at time of publishing).

After stowing bags into these lockers you go through one last metal detector. Any loose items like cell phones or cameras get a final airport style x-ray screening.

Mistake 4: You Don’t Budget Enough Time To Visit The Statue Of Liberty and Ellis Island

Visiting the Statue of Liberty is a must for many when in New York City. Avoid these BIG mistakes people make when visiting the Statue of Liberty. #statueofliberty #ellisisland #newyorkcity #nyc #visitnyc #ladyliberty

The ferries run on a regular schedule and are on a continuous loop stopping at the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, and then returning to Battery Park if you are on the New York City side. The wait time plus loading and unloading for the ferries can take longer than you think.

Once we made it through security we entered the ferry line. It took us over 25 minutes to wait for a ferry, load, and then arrive at Liberty Island. We were very lucky when we took the ferry from Liberty Island to Ellis Island. That time we walked right up to a ferry and that trip only took 15 minutes.

At the end of the day the lines for the ferries get extremely long. We got in line for a ferry from Ellis Island back to Battery Park around 4:30 pm. Our wait to board the ferry was about 20 minutes. Then because the line was so long it took several more minutes to load onto the extremely full ferry.

During our day at the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island we spent over 90 minutes waiting for or using the ferries. This does not include another 30 minutes for the ferry security screening.

The lines and travel time for the ferries used more of our touring time than I had budgeted. We were able to see everything we wanted to at Liberty Island, but we had to cut our visit to Ellis Island short.

Mistake 5: You Buy Tickets From A Random Vendor Near Battery Park

The U.S. National Park Service approves one official ticket broker for Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, and ferry tickets: Statue Cruises. We saw many people near Battery Park walking around trying to sell people tickets for the Statue of Liberty. Don’t be tempted, as these  can be counterfeit tickets.

Buying directly from Statue Cruises is the best way to avoid the risk of buying fake tickets . You can also buy legitimate tickets from ticket windows at Castle Clinton National Monument in Battery Park or Liberty State Park in Jersey City, New Jersey. Some hotel concierge also sell legitimate tickets.

Final Thoughts On Visiting The Statue Of Liberty and Ellis Island With Kids

Visiting the Statue of Liberty is a must for many when in New York City. Avoid these BIG mistakes people make when visiting the Statue of Liberty. #statueofliberty #ellisisland #newyorkcity #nyc #visitnyc #ladyliberty

The Statue of Liberty is an amazing monument and grand symbol of the United States. Seeing this iconic statue was a must for our family vacation to New York City. With planning and some luck we were able to avoid the 5 common mistakes people make when visiting the Statue of Liberty And Ellis Island.

We had an incredible day and want you to have a great experience when visiting the Statue of Liberty with kids. The most important advice I can give is to purchase your Reserve Tickets from Statue Cruises ahead of your trip. My other important tip is to allow yourself most of a day to visit Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty. This is especially true if you get one of the coveted Crown or Pedestal Access tickets.

How Long to Spend at the Statue of Liberty: 3 or 6 Hours

' src=

By Gabriela Hammond

Group photo in front of the statue

One of the most stressful elements of planning a trip is knowing how long something will take. The No. 1 question I get asked as a statue tour guide is: “How long should I spend at the Statue of Liberty?”

And I get it. You don’t want to miss anything but you also want to make sure you leave enough time to see everything you want to see while you’re on vacation.

Truthfully, there isn’t an easy answer. My response usually falls somewhere in between the minimum amount of time I think you should spend to how much time it would take to really see everything.

This article does just that, breaking down a Statue of Liberty visit into two categories. The first, in 3 hours, explains what exactly to see if you want to spend the least amount of time possible. Then the 6-hour section will walk you through everything there is if you’re hoping to do it all on your trip.

Read through both and decide which makes more sense for your visit.

How to spend 3 hours at the Statue of Liberty

The minimum amount of time you should leave to visit both the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island is 2.5-3 hours. It may seem like a long time to carve out of your NYC vacation, but the process of getting over there is pretty tricky, and there is really a lot you should see.

This is exactly what we do on our Statue of Liberty Express Tour , which is designed to show you the highlights of the statue as quickly and efficiently as possible.

That being said, you could certainly spend even more time if you wanted. But if you’ve got a strict schedule and need to visit the Statue of Liberty as quickly as possible, this will help.

The Pedestal: 30 minutes

View from the pedestal at the Statue of Liberty

The most exciting thing to see at the statue, in my opinion, is the view from the pedestal. Keep in mind, this is something you can only do with a pedestal ticket. On a clear day, you’ll get spectacular views. Here’s some of what you can see:

  • Jersey City
  • New York Harbor

But the pedestal also involves an extra security screening and a climb up 192 steps. There is an elevator, but it usually has a line. So this is something that takes a good bit of time. Plus, you don’t want to be rushing to leave once you get to the top.

A half hour should be plenty of time to climb to the top, enjoy the view, take some nice pictures and climb back down.

The Statue of Liberty Museum quick visit: 30 minutes

Liberty Island Museum

You might think that the Statue of Liberty Museum is something to skip, but it’s actually my favorite site on the island. And it’s still pretty new. Official opening was in May of 2019.

The museum features lots of interactive exhibits and so many interesting stories about the Statue of Liberty’s creation. You can even see Lady Liberty’s original torch up close.

Luckily, it doesn’t take long to see the whole thing, so 30 minutes will give you enough time for a quick walk-through.

How long does it take to visit Ellis Island?

Ellis_Island_Registry_Room

If you want to see Ellis Island, too, on your quick visit to the Statue of Liberty, it’s possible. Make sure to keep your visit to the statue shorter, so it’s closer to 2 1/2 hours, and you can save some time for Ellis Island.

To see all of Ellis Island would take a few hours. But if you’re in a rush and don’t want to skip it, I’d say 1 hour to see the highlights.

Right from the boat, the first place you should go is definitely the Registry Room. This is where hundreds of thousands of immigrants would spend hours waiting each and every day.

After you take some time to walk around, make sure to also check out the Kissing Post and the Wall of Honor.

How long it takes to get to and from the Statue of Liberty: 30-45 minutes

Boarding the ferry at the statue of liberty

Unfortunately, getting to the statue and back isn’t exactly fast. You have to take multiple ferry rides and go through a security screening before you board for the first time.

How long does it take to get to Liberty Island? This varies day to day, depending on the level of crowds. To be safe, I would budget around 30-45 minutes. This also includes the time it would take to ride to Ellis Island too.

Guide tip: It’s always a good idea to get in line early, so you can make sure you are on the next ferry available. Otherwise, you’ll waste precious time just standing in line. The boats do have bathrooms and snack bars on board. So if you want to avoid having to stop for bathroom breaks or food once you get to Liberty Island, you can use the ferry ride to save time.

Extra time on Liberty Island: 15-30 minutes

photo with statue of liberty in background

I’d also suggest leaving yourself about 15-30 minutes of extra time. This could be spent taking pictures, grabbing a bite to eat, or shopping for souvenirs.

If you think you’ll need even longer, just be sure to manage how much time you spend elsewhere. This is also a good buffer if you wind up in a time snag, like having to wait for the next ferry or getting caught in a long security line.

5-6 hours at the Statue of Liberty

With double the amount of time, there is a lot more for you to see at both Liberty and Ellis islands. You’ll be able to take your time and really soak in the experience. This is what I recommend!

You might be wondering, what else is there to do? Everything mentioned above seems to cover it. Well, three hours might be enough time to see the important things, but if you really want to explore what each site has to offer, you could easily fill another 2-3 hours.

This is what we do on our award-winning tour of the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island , and it’s been ranked one of the top three cultural experiences in the world by TripAdvisor travelers.

Here’s what I recommend.

Battery Park, including Castle Clinton

Battery Park, NYC

If you have that extra time on your hands, why not spend it exploring Battery Park? Take 30 minutes before or after your Statue of Liberty visit to check out some of the monuments and buildings. During my tours, I always make sure to start out with a quick overview of the park and everything there is to see.

There’s so much here:

  • Castle Clinton (which also serves as the ticketing office for the statue)
  • New York Korean War Veterans Memorial
  • American Merchant Mariners Memorial
  • Immigrants sculpture
  • Statue of Giovanni da Verrazano, among others

Take the time to look around Battery Park and you’ll be glad you did!

Pedestal and crown

statue-pedestal

You can visit the pedestal in 30 minutes , but if there’s a long line for the elevator or lots of crowds, you may need longer. Or maybe you’re a photographer and want to allow extra time to take photos.

If seeing the pedestal isn’t enough for you, consider buying tickets all the way up to the crown. It’s a unique and limited experience that allows you to climb inside the body of the statue, all the way up to the tip of her head.

Just remember, if you want to see the crown, you must buy tickets online at least a few months in advance. This isn’t something we usually do with our tour, but for some people, it’s a must on their trip to New York. I would leave an extra 20-30 minutes if you’re planning to see the crown on top of the pedestal. Depending on how fast you climb, it can take anywhere from 5-10 minutes to get to the top. It’s a tight space, so you only need about 10 minutes to see everything once you’re up there.

The Statue of Liberty Museum

Old torch in Liberty Island Museum

Again, 30 minutes would be plenty of time to experience all the content in the museum. There wouldn’t be anything extra to see that would require much more time.

If you want to learn even more about the statue, you could also visit the mini-museum inside the pedestal. However, you would need a pedestal or crown ticket in order to do so.

Extra time: Shopping, dining and photos

mini statue of liberty souvenir

Having extra time means being able to make room for some more leisurely activities. It’s also nice to be able to relax for a bit between Liberty and Ellis Island. You could spend this time buying a souvenir or getting food, but definitely make sure you get some good pictures too.

I always recommend leaving about 30 minutes to break on Liberty Island, but you could leave more or less time, depending on your preferences.

Ellis Island: 2-3 hours

exhibits at ellis island

Ellis Island is where you can really expand your schedule. While an hour gives you a good sense of the museum, you need at least 2-3 hours to really look through all the rooms and exhibits.

Definitely still visit the Registry Room and Wall of Honor. Then when you’re done, head up to the third floor to see even more. Read about some of the personal stories and learn what life was like for an Ellis Island immigrant . See pictures of an abandoned Ellis Island, and step into a recreated immigrant dormitory.

The Ellis Island registration building is one of the city’s most thorough and detailed museums. Many people who visit the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island just skip right over most of it, but it’s worth the extra time.

Bonus: Hard Hat Tour

Ellis Island hospital

Here’s something a little extra if you have even more time and want to make a day of it.

In my opinion, the most fascinating part of Ellis Island is the area that’s restricted to visitors. Across the island from the immigration building is an entire hospital complex that once served thousands of immigrants. It’s been closed to the public since the 1950s.

However, you can still get to see it in person by joining the Save Ellis Island Foundation on a Hard Hat Tour. This 1 hour experience takes you through multiple abandoned buildings and explains the significance that the hospital played in the lives of many immigrants.

Admission on the tour isn’t included with a standard ticket. It must be bought separately either online or in person at Ellis Island. If you’re not interested in spending the extra money, you could easily use this time to explore more of the exhibits on Ellis Island.

Buffer room for less stress

With more time to spare, you’ll be less rushed getting from place to place. This is especially helpful if you have a reservation or timed booking to get to.

As before, 15-30 minutes would be plenty of time to make up for any boat delays, long lines or crowds. Be sure to build in this buffer, no matter how long you choose to spend at the Statue of Liberty. It makes things so much less stressful!

No matter how much time you spend, it’s time well spent

Really, it doesn’t matter if you spend more or less time at the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, as long as you enjoyed the experience. But now you’re better prepared and won’t be overwhelmed by all of the options.

JERSEY CITY, N.J. (AP) — With her record-tying winning streak over, Nelly Korda got back to doing what she does best — winning.

Nelly Korda won a back-nine showdown with Hannah Green of Australia with a par on the 18th hole to capture the Mizuho Americas Open by a stroke Sunday for her sixth win in seven starts on the LPGA Tour this year.

“Oh, my gosh, six,” Korda said. “I can’t even really gather myself right now with that, the head to head that Hannah and I had pretty much all day. Wasn’t my best stuff out there today, but fought really hard on the back nine.”

“It was just amazing to share the stage with Hannah.”

The victory made the 25-year-old American only the fourth player on tour to win six times before June 1, joining LPGA Hall of Famers Babe Zaharias (1951), Louise Suggs (1953) and Lorena Ochoa (2008). She also is the first player since Inbee Park (2013) to record six wins in a single season.

The LPGA record for wins in a season is 13 by Mickey Wright in 1963.

Korda’s 14th career victory came a week after her record-tying five-tournament winning streak was snapped by Rose Zhang at the Cognizant Founders Cup. Zhang withdrew Thursday after three holes with an intestinal issue.

After playing the front nine in 2-over and getting a motivational nudge from caddie Jason McDede, Korda matched birdies with Green on the 10th, 13th and 15th holes at scenic Liberty National to stay tied for the lead at 14 under. The pairing matched the tour’s only two multiple winners this year.

Korda, the third-round leader by two shots, shot a final-round 71 and finished at 14-under 274. Green, who was looking for her third win, had a 70 and finished at 275.

“I mean, there is something special about the grind of not having your best stuff and then still mentally being able to pull it off,” Korda said.

After Korda put her drive in the fairway on the the par-4 No. 18, Green pulled her drive into the left rough. Her second to the green was short and left and still in the rough. After Korda hit her approach to 15 feet from the hole, Green’s chip over a bunker landed 10 feet in front of the hole and then rolled back a little.

Korda putted to tap-in range and finished out, while Green’s putt to extend the tournament to a playoff never touched the hole.

Korda then raised her hands and accepted the cheers from the crowd in this event held with a view of the New York City skyline and Statue of Liberty in the background.

“I mean, to lose to Nelly kind of like is — it’s sad, but then it’s also Nelly Korda,” Green said. “You know, like she’s obviously so dominant right now. To feel like second behind her is quite nice. Unfortunately the bogey on the last has a little bit of a sour taste.”

Jennifer Kupcho, who lost this event in a playoff with Zhang last year, finished tied for third with rookie Gabriela Ruffels of Australia and Ariya Jutanugarn and Chanettee Wannasaen, both of Thailand.

Playing hours before the leaders teed off, Wannasaen had the best round of the day with a 7-under 65. Jutanugarn had a 70, Kupcho shot 71 and Ruffels had a 72 in finishing third for the second straight week.

After being tied for the lead by Ayaka Furue of Japan and Kupcho with nine holes to play, Korda and Green turned the tournament into a two-player race with their matching birdies to open a four-shot lead over the rest of the field. When one hit it close, the other followed.

Furue finished in a large group at 9-under.

Korda is the eighth player to win six times in a year since 1980. The others are Betsy King (1989), Annika Sorenstam (1997, 2003), Karrie Webb (1999, 2000), Lorena Ochoa (2006, 2008), Park, Beth Daniel (1990) and Yani Tseng (2011).

Korda earned $450,000, bringing her career earnings to $11,880,981 and her season earnings to $2,943,708.

The tour has a week off and then heads to Lancaster, Pennsylvania, for the U.S. Women’s Open. Korda has dreamed of winning the title, but has not yet done it.

“Obviously it’s on the top of my priority list,” she said. “I just know there is never any good when you put more pressure on yourself. Just going to stay in my bubble that week and take it a shot at a time.”

If she does, maybe No. 7 is not too far away.
