Ski Safari: Adventure Time review – Jake and Finn hit the slopes

This is a side-scrolling endless runner game where players slide down hills, jump off of cliffs, and take flight on the back of Lady Rainicorn. It is similar to Tiny Wings in that the main character, Finn, must outrun an unseen force (in this case an avalanche of pink goo) by picking up as much speed as possible by grabbing bonus items and performing well-timed stunts.

The cast of characters in this game is impressive. You can play as the heroic Finn, or unlock additional starting skiers, like a Jelly Bean or one of Lumpy Space Princess’ Banana Guards. Throughout the game, you will be able to ski on the back of Finn’s best friend Jake the Dog, hitch a ride in Princess Bubblegum’s cart, and fly across the sky by hanging onto the Ice King’s foot.

The soundtrack is right from Adventure Time’s digital Walkman. The 8-bit song sounds like it is being performed by BMO himself.

As you earn coins, you can use them to unlock additional features, including new slope like Ice Kingdom and Mystery Mountain, costumes for Finn like his “Pa-jay-jays” and his iconic long hair, and fancy thrones like the Ice Throne and toilet-themed Porcelain Throne.

All of this, and there is still a game to play.

The game starts with Finn (or whichever starting skier you may have unlocked) sleeping soundly in his bed. He is pushed out the front door and smashed onto a boulder, which promptly wakes him up. Then, Finn sets off on a fast-paced downhill adventure.

To stay moving at a steady pace, don’t let Finn run into any obstacles, like boulders or signposts. To jump over something in the way, tap the screen. As long as he keeps moving, he will avoid the avalanche. If an obstacle does stop him, tap the screen rapidly to get him up and moving again.

To pick up speed, have Finn perform tricks. While in mid-air, hold your finger on the screen and he will flip. If you time it right, he will land perfectly on his back and continue skiing. The more backflips you perform, the faster Finn will go.

You can pick up nearby characters that are also heading down the slopes for extra speed and a bit of protection. For example, if you jump onto Jake’s back, snowboard style, and pick up a Jelly Bean along the way, you will fly down the slope faster. If you run into a boulder, instead of face planting, the Jelly Bean will take the hit and you will keep going. If you are in Princess Bubblegum’s cart, you can have multiple characters with you to keep from crashing and burning.

There are lots of different characters you can ride down the slopes on, like the Bear, the Banana Guard, the Ice King’s Penguin, the Wolf, and more. Plus, some characters let you fly for a short period of time. Have Marceline carry you across the sky, soar like a bird on the back of the Bird, take a ride with Lady Rainicorn, and more.

The further you get, the more points you earn and achievements you unlock. The coins you collect on your downhill adventure can be used to unlock the most mathematical items around.

The game is surprisingly fun. I am not the biggest fan of endless runner games, but this one has lots of interesting bonus items, some of which can be stacked on top of each other. So, every run is unique and exciting.

The Adventure Time theme doesn’t hurt either. There are lots of references to the television series for fans with voice acting from the original cast of the show.

Many of the items in the game’s store are fairly expensive. At least the mathy ones are. For example, one of the cheapest costumes costs 5,000 coins. On an average run, I was only able to pick up about 200 coins. Plus, there are a lot of items that cost gems, which are so rare that I never saw a single one the whole time I played the game. This leaves you with a strong desire to spend real money in the game for the cooler cosmetic upgrades, which I will probably end up doing because I am such a huge dork for Adventure Time.

Ski Safari: Adventure Time costs $0.99 . That is the perfect price for a game in this genre. It offers hours of entertainment and has a high replay value since no two games are alike. Even though the expensive cosmetic items in the game store might be too hard to pass up for Adventure Time geeks, the in-game upgrades are cheap enough that you won’t spend any additional money on the basic gameplay.

If you are a fan of Adventure Time, this is a must-have game. It features practically everything you love about the oddball television show. It is filled with familiar characters, backdrops, music, and voices. If you like side-scrolling endless runner games, but don’t even know what Adventure Time is, you will still enjoy it for its interesting bonus items and fun game mechanics. The beauty of the Adventure Time license is that it can fit with just about any game type out there because of the fun and whimsy at the heart of the show. So when talented developers get their turn at the license it’s a welcome sight. Ski Safari: Adventure Time , then, is an extremely delightful endless runner.

Coins buy upgrades, new costumes, and new areas to ski through. The chests contain random bonuses such as the gems that can be used to buy revives and unlock some items, or also random collectables to unlock more disguises. Few upgrades are hidden behind a gem wall, and coins can be collected at an effective rate; more can be bought with IAP, but most of the upgrades should be attainable through normal play.

Still, the original Ski Safari was a rather unique and charming endless runner, and Adventure Time is a perfect fit; with enough love shown toward the show (Farmworld Finn is unlockable, and Xergiok’s bird can be flown - that’s getting obscure!) that it doesn’t feel like a cheap cash-in. But really, that can be said of all the Adventure Time mobile games - even the mediocre ones aren’t bad at all. Perhaps it’s due to the creative staff - including creator Pendleton Ward - being gamers themselves that causes this elevation in quality. I’d love to see more of this sort of thing: established developers taking their swing at the world of Ooo. The world of the show is so fun to play around in, even in familiar concepts, that I would love to see even more of it.

Cartoon Network wants to get more into mobile games, and it spotted an opportunity to do exactly that by combining one of its biggest properties with one of its closest development partner’s app.

Publisher Cartoon Network Games is working on an Adventure Time adaptation of developer Defiant’s Ski Safari for mobile devices. This will have  Adventure Time  heroes Finn the dog and Jake the human skiing down a slope to escape the villainous Ice King. Players will team up with familiar faces and use special power-ups to ski faster and jump higher.

Ski Safari is a mobile arcade-action game that has players racing down a mountain while trying to stay ahead of an avalanche. Players can hop on penguins or take piggy-back rides on yetis. The idea of the collaboration between Defiant and Cartoon Network is to bring that style of gameplay with the humor and characters of  Adventure Time .

“Last year, we worked with Defiant on a  Ben 10 project — a game we already launched called Ben 10 Slammers — it’s a collectible card game,” Cartoon Network Digital vice president Chris Waldron told GamesBeat. “And in the middle of making that game, it was turning out really well. We were like, ‘Wow! This is a very good card game.'”

Cartoon Network found that Defiant was not only capable of making a high-quality touchscreen game but were also able to keep the gameplay fun and simple. The experience was going well, and the two companies started talking about collaborating further.

At the time, Waldron found himself playing a lot of Defiant’s Ski Safari, and he thought very highly of the title.

“It’s just one of those games that is native to mobile and just gets it right,” he said. “And — most importantly — it has a sense of humor and fun that matches with us.”

If the two companies were going to go through with a collaboration, both knew which property it should combine with Ski Safari. Neither Defiant or Cartoon Network ever even considered one of the other shows — it was always Adventure Time . It was just up to Defiant to decide if it was willing to repurpose one of its existing games for something else.

“We’ve always been protective of what we do with the IP,” Defiant creative director Morgan Jaffit told GamesBeat. “There have been a lot of offers along the way, and we’ve turned pretty much all of them down, but with Cartoon Network, we’d actually worked on [Ben 10 Slammers] together and got a chance to know each other before we talked about partnering up, and Adventure Time made it a no-brainer.”

How much of a no-brainer? Well, one of the developers on Defiant has a tattoo of the talking Game Boy-like character Beemo from the show.

“There’s not a brand I could imagine that would work better with the tone and humor of Ski Safari,” said Jaffit.

How to adapt a game for another brand

Since the rise of mobile gaming with the iPhone, a couple of big brands have hopped on the back of popular apps. Disney has employed this strategy a number of times. It first contacted Temple Run developer Imangi Studios and had it create a version of Temple Run based on the Pixar film  Brave.  Disney later did the same thing with Imangi for a Temple Run version of  Oz the Great and Powerful.  Disney also uses its original Where’s My Water? game as a platform for its other properties. It has so far released Mickey Mouse  and  Phineas & Ferb -themed versions of that physics puzzler.

This method is an inexpensive way to get a movie-licensed game on the market without having to build something unwieldy for modern consoles.

Still, this is the first time Defiant is attempting something like this, so the developer took its time figuring out how to best mashup Ski Safari with  Adventure Time .

“It’s always interesting to look at what you can keep — core gameplay– and what has to change — everything related to character,” said Jaffit. “At the same time, we’ve had a lot of thoughts along the way about what we can add to Ski Safari to make it better, and this was a good chance to put some of those ideas into the mix.”

Defiant is keeping a lid on most of the changes until it debuts the game, but Jaffit did say the team came up with an interesting idea for Jake the Dog. In the show, Jake has magical powers that enable him to stretch and grow forever. He can use that power in the game.

“So Jake is like the ultimate Ski Safari character,” said Jaffit. “He can keep stretching and fitting new characters on his back for as long as you can keep picking them up. When you crash though, he loses everything, so it’s a really nice risk-reward trade off that matches the gameplay and the Adventure Time feel.”

Speaking of that Adventure Time feel …

Yes, Defiant is making a few changes to the gameplay, but this project is mainly about updating the art and everything else to match the show. To accomplish this, Adventure Time creator Pendleton Ward gave Defiant full access to his production staff.

“From Pen’s original sketch that helped to inspire some of the mechanics, to episode reference, to voice over, to scripts, we were able to get access to resources really quickly,” said Jaffit. 

That means the studio can’t put the blame on anyone else if the game doesn’t feel right. It’s all up to Defiant to live up to expectations. We asked Jaffit what that is like.

“[It’s] tough,” he said. “We on the team are huge fans, so we know what it takes to make something feel genuinely Adventure Time , and we really held ourselves up to a high standard mainly because we know that the audience is going to be even more demanding. With everything we worked on we asked ourselves: ‘Is this good enough for Adventure Time?  Is this good enough for Ski Safari?’ And if the answer to both questions wasn’t ‘Yes,’ it didn’t go in.”
