Travel visa and documents required to enter the Philippines

The Philippines has visa exemption agreements with several countries around the world.

Therefore, a great number of nationals are not required to apply for a visa. However, all foreigners who wish to enter the Philippines must meet the following requirements :

  • Passport valid for 6 months past the expected stay
  • Roundtrip flight itinerary
  • Hotel or accommodation reservations
  • Cash, debit or credit card

Upon arrival in the Philippines, incoming passengers must go through border control.

All travelers should keep the following in mind regarding Philippine customs regulations :

  • Firearms  are forbidden
  • Certain items like alcohol and tobacco can be imported duty-free in small amounts only
  • Foreign currency of more than US$10,000 and local currency of more than P10,000 must be declared upon entry or exit

Before heading to the country, non-Philippine nationals should be prepared to show the airline at the point of departure to the Philippines a ticket for onward travel . Otherwise, most airlines will make them buy one on the spot or refuse them entry into the aircraft.

These are some of the visa requirements for the Philippines:

  • Valid passport or equivalent travel document — this must continue to be valid for a minimum of six (6) months after leaving the Philippines
  • Completed visa application form with the required information
  • Photos of the applicant (passport style, 2 copies)
  • Proof of traveling for tourism or business
  • Return or onward tickets as proof of intention to leave the Philippines

The Types of Visas for Foreign Nationals in the Philippines

As previously mentioned, the Philippine Bureau of Immigration (BI) offers over 20 kinds of visas which are divided into three categories:

  • Section 9 Visas or Non-Immigrant Visas. For foreign nationals who wish to stay in the Philippines temporarily
  • Section 13 Visas or Immigrant Visas. For foreign nationals who wish to stay permanently in the Philippines
  • Special Visas. For qualified foreign nationals belonging to the demographic groups granted special entry privileges through legislation or presidential proclamations

Depending on the country of origin, foreign nationals may enter the Philippines without a visa for visits of up to 30 days. However, foreigners who are planning to acquire work, residency, retirement, and similar activities in the Philippines are required to secure the appropriate visa for their stay.

Commonly Issued Visas to Foreign Nationals in the Philippines

Work visas, tourist visas, and special investor’s visas are a few of the many visas offered in the Philippines, each with their own subcategory to further specify and cater to your travel needs.  To give you a general idea, here are the most commonly issued visas to foreign nationals who plan to work, visit, or invest in the Philippines.

Work Visas in the Philippines

There are four work visas in the Philippines, namely:

  • 9(g) Pre-Arranged Employee Commercial Visa
  • 9(g) Pre-Arranged Employee Non-Commercial Visa
  • Special Non-Immigrant Visa or 47(a)(2)
  • Special Non-Immigrant Visa under E.O. 226, as amended by R.A. 8756 (ROHQ)

Foreign nationals who wish to engage in gainful employment must secure either one of these visas, depending on their employment needs. Moreover, applicant must also obtain a work permit as part of their work visa application in the Philippines.

9(g) or Pre-Arranged Employee Commercial Visa

The 9(g) or Pre-Arranged Employee Commercial Visa is the most common work visa issued to foreign nationals that are seeking gainful employment in the Philippines. This visa grants the holder multiple entry and exit privileges during their employment with a registered company in the country.

Applicants must submit the following documents to BI when applying for a work visa:

  • Checklist with accomplished documentary requirements
  • Duly accomplished Consolidated General Application Form (CGAF) for Non-Immigrant Visa
  • Additional information on the applicant’s children/dependents (if applicable)
  • Notarized certification of the number of foreigners and Filipino employees of Employer/Company

Additionally, your hiring company must serve as your petitioner for the visa. Prior to applying for a 9(g) visa, you will need to obtain an Alien Employment Permit (AEP) to work as a non-tourist in the Philippines.

Visitor or Tourist Visas in the Philippines

Foreign nationals who wish to travel to the Philippines for vacation or leisure purposes are required to obtain a tourist or visitor visa. However, some nationalities who come from select country of origin may enter the country without needing to acquire a visa.

Temporary Visitor’s Visa

The Philippines have two categories for tourists or visitors coming into the country: restricted foreign nationals and unrestricted foreign nationals. Restricted foreign nationals who wish to temporarily enter the country for leisure, business, or medical purposes must secure a 9(a) or Temporary Visitor’s Visa . On the other hand, unrestricted foreign nationals may enter the Philippines without a visa for a duration of 30 to 59 days, depending on their country of origin.

Applicants must present the following documents when applying for a visitor’s visa:

  • Passport/Travel Document valid for at least six (6) months beyond the intended period of stay in the Philippines;
  • Duly Accomplished visa application forms;

Dubai: From doing odd jobs as cleaner, waitress, helper to becoming a business owner in Dubai, Malou Prado’s journey has been nothing short of remarkable.

During our interview, Prado got so emotional while reminiscing about her life's story when she first set foot in Dubai in 2005, tears started running down her face. Her life has been full of challenges, she endured odd jobs, and financial hardships, fell into depression during the lowest point of her life.

Escape from poverty

At a very young age, Prado lives in poverty in the Philippines. She recalls: “Growing up in the town of Cavite in the Philippines, my parents would always tell me that education was the only ticket to escape from poverty. In an effort to surpass financial constraints, I assisted my mother in selling ‘tinapa’ (smoked fish) in the local market. With my determination and gusto to end the cycle of poverty, I was able to finish a Baccalaureate course in Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the Lyceum University Manila.”

After graduation, she became a factory worker in Taiwan, in 1999, where she met her husband, Robert Prado. After the employment contract was over, they went back to the Philippines in 2004. As she could not find a job in the country, she decided to work abroad, this time in the UAE.

Opportunity in Dubai

Prado said: “After Taiwan, I set my sights on the UAE, my dream destination for a better life. In 2005, I arrived in Dubai on a visit visa. During the first three months of my stay in Dubai, I was struggling to find a stable job. I flew to Kish island in Iran, many a times, back and forth, for visa change, extension purposes and continuously worked odd jobs, such as cleaner, helper, food server, and saleslady, among others. I remember doing part-time jobs at some events, doing catering services for wedding parties, where I carry tables and chairs, serve food to the guests and wash the dishes and earn Dh80 to 100 per day. Sometimes the organisers would just offer food, and not pay me any amount for my services.

"I was getting tired of eating ramen noodles and shawarma, because we could not afford a full meal. I also worried about paying the rent for my bed space in Dubai. My husband and I occupied the upper bunk bed, as it was cheaper than the lower deck. While struggling to survive, I was also concerned about sending money to support my family back home, but I was totally broke. It broke my heart, as I couldn’t provide anything for my three-months-old daughter in the Philippines, at that point."

Keep the faith

Prado, 46, never lost faith in the timing of life, believing that her moment of opportunity would come. She said: “I always trust that timing is everything in life. I believe that just because it was not happening right then, didn’t mean it never will. I prayed for guidance and asked the Lord for help. And it transpired. One day, my sister’s public relations officer in the company was looking for staff. Apparently, an UAE national was searching for a trusted person to run his newly opened travel agency. At first, he offered me a job as a freelance agent to arrange for travel accommodations for business visitors, selling UAE visas and tickets in 2006.

"Determined to rise above my dire financial situation, I accepted the offer to work in the company without a salary, but on a commission basis. He sent me to Emirates Aviation for training. I had done some research, attended seminars and more self-study to learn the ropes of the business. Embracing the challenge with enthusiasm, I unknowingly laid the foundation for my future success. I persevered and became a travel manager. I attracted so many clients, 90 per cent of our customers are Filipinos, and so the business was growing. As Dubai's tourism industry started to bloom, so did my entrepreneurial spirit. Taking this risk allowed me to prove myself as a true challenger and fighter, and it opened doors to new possibilities. I realised that being an entrepreneur was my calling. I founded MPQ Travel and Tourism, Dubai, in 2013 (MPQ stands for Malou Prado-Quinto).”

Travel restrictions

Running the travel agency comes with its fair share of challenges, including fierce competition in the industry, managing customer expectations and unexpected circumstances such as the COVID-19 pandemic. As CEO of the travel company, Prado found it hard to stay afloat, as the world went into lockdown during the pandemic.

Prado recalls: “During the travel lockdowns, our agency faced significant challenges. There were only few customers, flights were decreasing to nil at times, but overheads were there. I had to close down the office, and asked my staff to stay at home for a while. I didn’t know where to get the money to pay for my staff, office rents and everyday expenses. My cheque to pay rent bounced due to insufficient funds. I was so desperate, and broke down mentally during the COVID-19 pandemic. I was hopeless, I prayed very hard for help and guidance.

Through ups and downs, I weathered out the challenges and persevered through the difficult years with the support of my husband. Now, we own a house in the Philippines, and explore Europe, the Americas and the Middle East with my family. Today, the agency has grown with three branches in Dubai - Karama, Bur Dubai and Satwa, and we have a branch in Las Vegas, USA, and another in the Philippines. Currently, there are 20 employees in total. - Malou Prado

"I am fortunate to have my husband's unwavering support, both emotionally and practically, in the business. He actively assists with administrative tasks, financial management, and provides valuable insights that contribute to the agency's growth and success. His dedication and collaboration have been instrumental in overcoming these obstacles. We persevered and adapted to the situation.

"We were one of the first travel agencies to organise chartered flights to assist the repatriation of Filipinos from the UAE to the Philippines during the COVID-19 pandemic. It helped our organisation survive the pandemic. As the travel sector was severely affected by COVID-19 travel restrictions, this initiative provided a lifeline for both our business and our customers."

Saving tips

Prado is proud to have survived all the challenges in life. She has learnt valuable saving lessons on her journey to financial stability. Prado shares her saving habits:

• Set clear financial goals: I know first-hand the importance of having clear financial objectives. When I started my entrepreneurial journey, I set specific goals for business expansion and secure my family's future.

• Create a budget: Managing finances effectively is crucial. I diligently created a budget that allowed me to keep track of my income, business expenses, and personal spending, enabling me to allocate a portion of my earnings to savings.

• Prioritise savings: Before anything else, I made sure to set aside money for my future, treating it as a non-negotiable commitment.

• Maintain a debt-free approach: I understood the burden of debt, so I made it a priority to minimise it. By staying debt-free, I could focus more on saving and investing for the long term.

Future plans

Looking ahead, Prado plans to expand her travel agencies' presence internationally. She said: “I envision a highly motivated team that shares my values and a culture of excellence and customer-centricity. As a passionate entrepreneur, I remain open to exploring new opportunities and contributing positively to the Filipino community and the global travel industry."

Prado’s journey from humble beginnings to thriving entrepreneurship in Dubai is a testament to the power of perseverance, and faith in oneself. Prado said: “Embracing challenges as opportunities for growth, staying adaptable, and fostering a strong work ethic have been key factors in my achievements. I believe that success requires determination and resilience, and I urge fellow entrepreneurs to be driven by passion and purpose, embrace challenges, and never lose sight of their goals. Surround yourself with a dedicated team that shares your vision and values, as they will be crucial to your success."

When to File Your Adjustment of Status Application for Family-Sponsored or Employment-Based Preference Visas: June 2024

Are you seeking to adjust your status and become a U.S. permanent resident under a family-sponsored or employment-based preference immigrant visa? If you have not yet had a relative or employer file an immigrant visa petition on your behalf, please learn more about the Adjustment of Status Filing Process . If you already have a petition filed or approved on your behalf, you may have to wait for an available visa in your category (if applicable) before you can file your Form I-485, Application to Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status . This page will help you determine when to file your adjustment of status application.

When to File

Use the Visa Bulletin charts below to determine when to file your adjustment of status application.

To use the charts:

  • Find your visa type in the first column (on the left) of the appropriate chart (Family-sponsored or Employment-based).
  • Stay in that row and move directly to the right to find the corresponding date under the country of your birth (as listed in the boldface columns across the top).
  • If the date on the chart is current (“C”), or your priority date is earlier than the date on the chart, you may file your adjustment of status application, if otherwise eligible to do so.
  • “U” means unauthorized; for example, numbers are not authorized for issuance.

Your priority date is generally the date when your relative or employer properly filed the immigrant visa petition on your behalf with USCIS. If a labor certification is required to be filed with your immigrant visa petition, the priority date is the date the labor certification application was accepted for processing by the Department of Labor.

About the Visa Bulletin

DOS publishes current immigrant visa availability information in a monthly Visa Bulletin . The Visa Bulletin indicates when statutorily limited visas are available for issuance to prospective immigrants based on their individual priority date.

On Nov. 20, 2014, the Secretary of Homeland Security directed USCIS to work with DOS to:

  • Ensure that all immigrant visas authorized by Congress are issued to eligible individuals when there is sufficient demand for such visas, and
  • Improve the Visa Bulletin system for determining when immigrant visas are available to applicants during the fiscal year.

Additionally, in July 2015, the Administration issued its report on Modernizing and Streamlining Our Legal Immigration System for the 21st Century (PDF) . This report included detailed recommendations to revise and update the monthly Visa Bulletin to better estimate immigrant visa availability and provide needed predictability to nonimmigrant workers seeking permanent residency.

USCIS, in coordination with DOS, revised the procedures for determining visa availability for applicants waiting to file for adjustment of status. The revised process will better align with procedures DOS uses for noncitizens who seek to become U.S. permanent residents by applying for immigrant visas at U.S. consulates and embassies abroad.

This revised process will enhance DOS’s ability to more accurately predict overall immigrant visa demand in determining the cut-off dates for the Visa Bulletin. This will help ensure that the maximum number of immigrant visas are issued annually as intended by Congress, and minimize month-to-month fluctuations in Visa Bulletin final action dates. Additional goals are outlined in the White House report, Modernizing and Streamlining Our Legal Immigration System for the 21st Century (PDF) .

New Visa Bulletin Charts

The Visa Bulletin will now have two different charts because of the revised procedures. DOS will post two charts per visa preference category in the DOS Visa Bulletin. The charts are:

  • Application Final Action Dates (dates when visas may finally be issued); and
  • Dates for Filing Applications (earliest dates when applicants may be able to apply).

When USCIS determines there are immigrant visas available for the filing of additional adjustment of status applications, the Dates for Filing Applications chart may be used to determine when to file an adjustment of status application with USCIS. Otherwise, the Application Final Action Dates chart must be used to determine when to file an adjustment of status application with USCIS.

In coordination with the DOS, USCIS will monitor visa numbers each month and post the relevant chart on this page under When to File.

Determining Visa Availability

USCIS considers several factors to determine if there is a greater supply of visas than the demand for those visas. To determine visa availability, USCIS will compare the number of visas available for the remainder of the fiscal year with:

  • Documentarily qualified visa applications reported by DOS;
  • Pending adjustment of status applications reported by USCIS; and
  • Historical drop off rate of applicants for adjustment of status (for example, denials, withdrawals and abandonments)

TIPS: What you need to know about getting a Japan visa

Planning to travel to Japan any time soon?

Applying for a visa can be daunting, but it shouldn't stop you from taking that trip to see the Land of the Rising Sun. With some proper preparation of all the necessary documents, you'll be able to get approved for your Japan vacation.

There are different types of Japanese visas but we'll focus more on the tourist ones for those who want to go on a quick leisure trip to experience the country. There are two common tourist visas: the single-entry allowing holders to enter Japan once and stay for as long as 90 days, and the multiple entry visa which lets the holder enter the country many times within a specified period for at least 15 to 30 days each stay. Here are the requirements you'll need to get ready.

  • Valid Philippine passport  in good condition, must be signed and have at least two blank visa pages
  • Visa application form which you can download here
  • Your itinerary in Japan which includes your port of entry, where you intend to stay and the contact number of the accommodation
  • A passport photo 2 x 1.4 inches with a white background taken within six months
  • If your birth certificate is "late registration," you must also submit a  Baptismal Certificate  and a Form 137  from high school or elementary, both of which must be issued within at least three months
  • You only need to submit a birth certificate if you have never applied for a Japan visa before
  • You will also need to write a letter of authorization for the Japan Embassy to verify your birth certificate
  • Original Marriage Certificate (if married) issued within one year
  • Bank Certificate  of a personal account (not company/business) issued within three months
  • A copy of your latest Income Tax Return

If someone else will be shouldering your travel expenses, you must also submit the following:

  • Guarantee letter
  • Proof of relationship between applicant and guarantor
  • Bank Certificate and Income Tax Return of the guarantor

Once you've acquired all the requirements, choose an accredited travel agency from this list from the Japanese Embassy. Fees may cost P950 to P1,200 for a single entry visa, depending on the travel agency.

Multiple-entry requirements

Want to get a multiple-entry visa? This type of visa has some conditions for issuance, so it may not be as easy to get one. For instance, you will need to have a history of travel as a temporary visitor to the country in the last three years.

If you pass the conditions, you will need the same requirements as above but also include an explanation letter for requesting multiple entry, proof of your travel to Japan in the last three years, and proof of financial capacity.

So how much money do you need in your bank account to get your visa approved? The Japanese Embassy hasn't really specified a certain amount but what's advised is to have enough to fund your travel expenses.

As for how long a tourist visa is processed, it will usually take seven to 10 business days. It's best to get your visa processed a month before your trip so you have ample time to request documents that you might not have around.

Additionally, you don't need to book a hotel or a flight before your visa is processed. In fact, travel agencies advise against it. It's best to book once your visa is approved.

Remember, just because you submitted all your documents, it doesn't automatically mean that you'll be granted the visa.
