Discover Hawaii With Us

Start off your Hawaiian vacation with an overnight stay in Honolulu, where you can visit the famous Waikiki Beach and Pearl Harbor monument. In Lahaina, admire dormant volcanoes aboard a thrilling helicopter ride, while in Kailua Kona, visit a seahorse farm. Stop by the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park in Hilo before setting sail towards Vancouver, where you’ll disembark after enjoying several relaxing days at sea

Featured Highlights

Dramatic scenery.

You’re constantly aware of the power of nature in Hawaii, where the lush scenery is like something out of another world. Jagged cliffs, beaches of glittering black sand, ribbon-like waterfalls cascading from emerald escarpments, and smoldering volcanoes catch your eye at every turn. You’ll see pounding surf, limpid lagoons, and sometimes a snowy cap on the highest mountains. Explore bamboo forests and plunging gorges. At night, look up at the astonishing array of stars.

Unique Culture

Hawaiian people feel a deep connection to nature and embrace the spirit of Aloha, which means living in harmony with nature and the people around you. Beliefs are expressed through beautiful chants, music, graceful hula, and art. Stories relayed from one generation to the next invoke the spirits and the historical events that have shaped the islands. Natural phenomena are understood as the work of gods and goddesses, and many locations and animals are regarded as sacred.

Intriguing Cuisine

Hawaii boasts a unique cuisine, with influences from Polynesia, Japan, and America. Taste fresh tuna poke bowls, sweet pineapple, and juicy strawberry papaya. Try lomi lomi, salted salmon with tomatoes, onions, and hot peppers. Sample local chocolate and enjoy coffee made from Kona beans. Experience everything from delicate sushi and sashimi to moco loco. Look out for spam, a local favorite, served in wontons or as Spam musubi with rice and nori.

Top Hawaii FAQs

What is the best time of year to take a cruise to Hawaii?

The best time of year to visit Hawaii is from March to September, when you can expect warm temperatures and less rain. Hawaii is, however, a year-round destination, with great snorkeling, hiking, and beach life at any time of year.

How long does a typical cruise last?

Our Hawaiian cruises last from nine to 13 nights, sailing between Vancouver and Honolulu. You could also choose a transpacific cruise, starting or ending in Honolulu. These longer voyages range from 16 to 19 nights.

What are the main ports of call?

The main ports of call in Hawaii are Honolulu, from where our cruises start or finish, and Hilo and Kona, both on the Big Island. On some itineraries, you’ll also enjoy scenic cruising along the Napali Coast on Kauai, a sacred landscape of emerald cliffs, pristine beaches, and jagged mountain ridges. Some cruises also visit Astoria in Oregon before the Pacific crossing to Hawaii.

What should I pack?

Hawaii is a tropical destination with year-round warm weather and high humidity. Pack for beach days, and if you’re an active kind of traveler, hikes and adventures. Swimwear, sunblock, coverups, beach shoes, a sun hat, and proper footwear for hiking should all be on your list.

Throughout the ship, casual resort wear, sundresses, shorts, polos, or button-downs are appropriate, paired with sandals, low heels, and loafers. In main and specialty dining, we ask guests to refrain from wearing swimsuits, see-through coverups or robes, bare feet, tank tops, T-shirts, and baseball caps.

Smart Casual attire is required for entry to main dining, specialty dining, and the Celebrity Theatre. Smart Casual means you look comfortable yet tasteful in a dress, skirt, long pants, or jeans with a stylish top or button-down. Shorts and flip-flops are not considered Smart Casual.

Each itinerary features one to two more “formal” nights that we call Evening Chic. Evening Chic means you dress to impress, glamorous and sophisticated in your own way, with a cocktail dress, skirt, slacks, or designer jeans, an elegant dress top, or blazer—some guests even pack a tuxedo or gown for onboard photos.

The daily program, delivered to your stateroom and available at the Guest Relations Desk, will be your guide to the correct attire each evening. If you do not wish to participate in Evening Chic, Smart Casual attire is acceptable for dining and attending the theatre.

Can I fly to Hawaii and then cruise the islands?

Our cruises to Hawaii operate one-way either to or from Honolulu and Vancouver (or Sydney, Australia in terms of transpacific voyages). So yes, if you pick a Honolulu to Vancouver departure, you can easily fly to Hawaii and spend a few days exploring before embarking on your Celebrity ship.

Do I need a passport?

For Hawaii cruises that either begin or end in Vancouver, Canadian law requires that all persons entering Canada carry proof of citizenship and identity. A valid U.S. passport, passport card, or NEXUS card satisfies these requirements for U.S. citizens.

If you have chosen to visit Hawaii as part of a transpacific cruise, you’ll also need a passport.

Non-U.S. citizens also require a passport for entry into both the U.S. and Canada (and the countries visited on our transpacific cruises). It is your responsibility to check your government’s website for the latest information about entry and visa requirements.

What kind of activities and excursions are available?

Hawaii offers a wonderful range of activities and experiences. From Kona, join a snorkel or submarine tour to admire the spectacular underwater world. Meet local producers and try island-made coffee and chocolate, or explore the lush interior of the Big Island in a 4x4, stopping to cool off under tumbling waterfalls.

Historic Hilo is also famous as the gateway to magnificent falls and verdant rainforest. Admire the dramatic lava landscapes of the Volcanoes National Park shaped by the still-active Kilauea and Mauna Loa volcanoes. In Honolulu, make time to visit Pearl Harbor, or stroll along the iconic Waikiki Beach.

If you’re looking to make an exotic destination your next vacation, let’s talk about the ‘how’ and ‘why’ of Hawaii. The answers are as follows: visit Hawaii on a Carnival cruise (of course), and… visit Hawaii because this place is simply spectacular! Take a Hawaii cruise and explore exotic locations spread across four islands — the Hawaiian island chain is home to names you know, like Maui, Kona and Honolulu. These spots feature postcard-worthy waterfalls, volcanoes and some of the world’s most stunning, sunning beaches. You’ll find these spread across an island chain so otherworldly that you may forget you’re in the states! Best of all, that postcard you’re sure to send home will require only domestic postage.

  • Experience some of the world's most famous beaches.
  • Get up-close with a volcanic mountain.
  • Hula it up at a real luau.

Hawaii Cruises

Paradise can be found on a cruise to Hawaii. Your future will be filled with ukuleles, botanical gardens and soothing, serene days by the water.

The options are endless to relax and enjoy America’s most picturesque islands during your cruise vacation. Volcanoes with golf on the side and waves you can take for a ride. Waterfalls cascading through your hair, and luaus with pig roasts in the air. Each day brings new opportunities: whether you choose to explore the natural beauty of the islands or immerse yourself in Hawaiian culture.

Aloha, Hawaii cruisers.

Things to Do on a Cruise to Hawaii

Did you know that Hawaii is comprised of over 1,500 islands? You are probably more familiar with the eight main islands which include Maui, Hawaii and Oahu. The 50th state is actually in Polynesia, and offers an exciting backdrop of volcanoes and jungles to the riveting culture of the island natives. Featured below are a few of the best things to do when cruising to Hawaii:

Humpback whales in Hawaii

  • Spot a hoard of humpback whales as they come to the warm waters off of Maui to give birth. If you stick your head in the water you can hear their echoing voices.
  • Visit the Polynesian Cultural Center where people are on hand to teach you about the different cultures and traditions on many islands in Polynesia. For instance, attend a Samoan cooking class or learn how to start a fire using two pieces of wood.

Napali Coast, Hawaii

  • Tour the USS Missouri to learn about the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor that preceded America’s involvement in WWII. There is also a beautiful memorial in the area.
  • See the beautiful and enchanting Napali Coast. Whether from the vantage point of a cruise or on a helicopter excursion, you’ll be amazed at the waterfalls and stunning hue of this tropical coastline.

Fire dancers at a Hawaiian luau

  • Attend a luau. These celebratory feasts usually include hula dancers, flame throwers and a delicious dinner, all served outside with the ocean in the background.
  • Hike up an active volcano at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. You can feel the heat from the crater that vents steam from the volcano, and then go inside a lava tube.

Hawaii cruise guide: Best itineraries, planning tips and things to do

Erica Silverstein

Hawaii and cruising seem like a match made in heaven. You can experience all the beaches, water sports, lush scenic areas and Polynesian culture without having to settle for just one island — or deal with the hassle of flying between them.

In addition, you get a convenient home base to leave your stuff, enjoy evening entertainment without a drive and linger over dinner without worrying how much the bill will come to.

However, it's not all paradise in the Hawaii cruise world because itineraries are limited. Why? U.S. government regulations prohibit foreign-flagged ships from sailing between U.S. ports without visiting a foreign port.

Because most cruise ships are flagged in another country, they cannot offer interisland cruises. Only two lines currently offer those. The rest must sail long cruises at least one-way, if not round trip, from the west coast of North America.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

If a Hawaii cruise sounds like the perfect getaway to you, you'll want to read up on which lines offer which types of itineraries, as well as which islands and ports you must visit.

Here, we've gathered all the information you need to know to choose the perfect Aloha State sailing for your travel style, budget and allotted vacation time.

Why cruise to Hawaii?

cruise to hawaii in july

I probably don't need to convince anyone why Hawaii is an amazing vacation destination. It has everything — gorgeous beaches, fabulous snorkeling and diving spots, scenic hiking trails, fascinating local culture and history, delicious cuisine, renowned resorts and golf courses, and plentiful waterfalls and rainbows.

Why should you cruise instead of booking a hotel or resort stay on land? The main reason is to sample more islands.

Most travelers stick to one, possibly two islands, during a Hawaii vacation. If you want to sample the highlights of several islands, from Volcanoes National Park near Hilo, Hawaii, to Kauai's Waimea Canyon and Napali Coast, it's much simpler to do that from a cruise ship.

Additionally, lodging prices in Hawaii can be high due to its popularity as a vacation destination. Restaurants are also more expensive than on the mainland because many staples have to be shipped in from afar.

On a cruise, you're free to sample Hawaiian cuisine during your time in port, but can take as many meals as you want on board, many of which are already covered in your cruise fare.

When do cruises go to Hawaii?

cruise to hawaii in july

You can sail to Hawaii year-round, but the itinerary options vary based on the month you choose. Norwegian Cruise Line is the only major cruise line to offer year-round, weeklong cruises.

If you're looking for a longer itinerary, sailing round trip from the west coast of North America, or a small-ship adventure cruise, you'll have the biggest selection of cruises between October and April.

The beginning and end of the Alaska season in the spring and fall is when you'll find one-way repositioning cruises either between Hawaii and Vancouver, British Columbia, or Seattle, or from the Pacific Northwest all the way to the South Pacific, stopping in Hawaii along the way.

The summer offers the fewest Hawaii cruise options.

Best Hawaii itineraries

cruise to hawaii in july

Cruises to Hawaii fall into three categories: weeklong interisland cruises, round-trip cruises sailing to/from the West Coast and one-way repositioning cruises.

The best cruise for you depends on how much vacation time you have, how many islands you want to visit, whether you're looking for overnight port stays and how you feel about multiple sea days in a row.

Interisland cruises

The best Hawaii itinerary in my opinion is Norwegian Cruise Line's seven-night round-trip Honolulu sailings on Pride of America. The U.S.-flagged ship is the only big ship able to sail interisland itineraries without calling on a foreign port.

The itinerary features two-day overnight visits to Maui and Kauai and stops in both Kona and Hilo on the Big Island, as well as scenic cruising along Kauai's famed Napali Coast. It's easy to book pre- or post-cruise stays in Honolulu to explore places like Waikiki Beach, Diamondhead Crater and Pearl Harbor.

For a completely different interisland cruise, UnCruise Adventures offers a more off-the-beaten-path, adventure-focused sailing on the 36-passenger Safari Explorer.

It also visits Maui and the island of Hawaii, as well as the smaller islands of Lanai and Molokai. Expect lots of water sports and nature-based outings, and daily plans that can change due to the weather or a whale sighting. These expedition cruises run from November to April.

Round-trip Hawaii cruises from the West Coast

Most of the major cruise lines offering seasonal Hawaii cruises — such as Carnival, Princess and Holland America — offer 14- to 18-night round-trip itineraries from West Coast ports such as Los Angeles, Long Beach, San Diego and San Francisco, in California; Seattle; and Vancouver. These sailings run from the fall into the spring. Some lines offer just a few round trips while others offer months of Hawaii cruises.

The itineraries all follow a similar pattern: A four-day Pacific Ocean crossing, daily port stops in three or four Hawaii ports (occasionally with an overnight), another five days at sea, then a stop in Ensenada, Mexico, on the way home. If you're sailing from Vancouver, expect five days for the crossing and no visit to Mexico.

You may find some longer grand voyages sailing round trip from North America to Hawaii plus other South Pacific destinations. For example, Holland America offers some epic 35- to 51-night cruises round trip from San Diego

These Hawaii cruises are best for retirees, who have the time to enjoy leisurely ocean crossings on either end of the trip.

Repositioning cruises

The final type of Hawaii cruise is the one-way repositioning sailing, typically offered when ships are heading to or leaving Alaska. The cruise line schedules these sailings to swing by Hawaii on their way to the South Pacific or Australia or perhaps before the ship begins Mexico cruises from southern California or transits the Panama Canal to the Atlantic.

The shorter options, such as 10- and 11-night Hawaii cruises offered by Royal Caribbean and Celebrity, sail between Vancouver and Honolulu, leaving you to book a one-way flight to or from Hawaii. Longer one-way sailings from upscale brands, such as Oceania, Seabourn and Silversea, will traverse the Pacific Ocean between Tahiti (or another far-flung island) and Vancouver or Seattle.

The shorter, one-way sailings are a good compromise for travelers who don't want to take a full two weeks or can't imagine 10 days at sea on one vacation but do want some relaxing time on the ship. They also allow pre- or post-cruise stays in Hawaii. The longer one-off journeys are more for folks wanting to explore a wide swath of the Pacific, with Hawaii being a small part of that deep dive.

Best Hawaii cruise lines

cruise to hawaii in july

It's no surprise that I find Norwegian Cruise Line to be one of the best Hawaii cruise lines because it offers a unique product that's a reasonable vacation length for most people and really allows its guests to experience many of Hawaii's highlights.

Princess Cruises is definitely the leader in the two-week, round-trip Hawaii cruise department, offering more sailings out of more homeports than any other line. Carnival , Holland America and Viking also offer this type of sailing, but not as frequently. Holland America is a great choice for round-trip sailings that explore deep into the South Pacific.

Sister lines Celebrity Cruises and Royal Caribbean are good bets for those hybrid one-way cruises from the West Coast to Hawaii.

Seabourn , Silversea and Oceania offer upscale accommodations, fine dining and multiple fare inclusions for travelers looking to journey in style across the Pacific Ocean, stopping in Hawaii along the way. Seabourn and Silversea feature smaller ships, more fare inclusions and higher prices than Oceania.

UnCruise Adventures is the line for travelers who want to get off the beaten path on a small ship with a flexible itinerary. These sailings are perfect for active folks who want to get up close to nature. You don't have to be a true cruiser to love UnCruise, but you do need a large budget, as intimate adventures don't come cheap.

Things to do in Hawaii

cruise to hawaii in july

Whether you're looking for utter relaxation or an adrenaline rush, you'll find plenty of things to do in Hawaii. The islands have much to offer families, couples and friends of all ages.

Obviously, a top attraction is Hawaii's many beaches. You can plop down in the sand on beautifully manicured strands of white sand or find more rugged volcanic black sand beaches. Look for beach parks with sheltered swimming areas for families or find a secluded beach away from popular tourist areas. Some beaches can have strong currents or rough seas during certain times of the year, so always exercise caution when swimming.

Water sports are also a big draw, whether that's surfing Hawaii's waves or snorkeling with green turtles in Maui. Kayak out to sea or along Kauai's Wailua River, or try your hand at kite-surfing or stand-up paddleboarding. For a more chill afternoon out on the waves, consider a whale-watching cruise, sunset sail or scenic boat ride along the Napali Coast.

Nature lovers can find a variety of hikes within lush green forests or along the rocky landscape of the Waimea Canyon. Maui's road to Hana is a must-do if you like twisty roads and cascading waterfalls. Watch the sun rise or set, bike down the extinct Haleakala volcano, or visit a live one at Volcanoes National Park near Hilo on the island of Hawaii.

Many travelers enjoy learning about Hawaiian culture and history. Attend a luau where you can feast on Hawaiian cuisine and enjoy music, dancing and fire play. Some take place on plantations where you can discover more about local agriculture. Or, stop by historic attractions, such as Honolulu's Iolani Palace or the Big Island's city of refuge, to learn about the ancient Polynesian culture or the Kingdom of Hawaii.

Best Hawaii cruise ports

cruise to hawaii in july

The islands of Hawaii only offer a few cruise ports for ships to visit. (UnCruise Adventures is the exception, calling in a few smaller places that the big ships can't go.) All of them are top-notch, so it's hard to say which one is the best overall. Certainly, some ports are better for different types of activities.

The following Hawaii ports are the ones commonly found on cruise itineraries.

Honolulu, Oahu

Honolulu is known for Pearl Harbor, where you can visit the USS Arizona Memorial Museum, the Battleship Missouri Memorial, a submarine museum and an aviation museum. Cruisers can catch some rays at Waikiki Beach or hike the Diamond Head crater.

Learn about Hawaiian history at the Mauna 'Ala royal mausoleum and the Iolani Palace, or Hawaiian culture at a luau or the Polynesian Cultural Center. You can also take a tour to Oahu's North Shore. Oahu is the turn-around port for Pride of America, so travelers should consider a pre- or post-cruise stay to see the sights.

Nawiliwili, Kauai

The small but mighty Kauai is one of the best Hawaii ports for outdoor, nature-based adventure. Get your cameras out for the rocky landscapes of the Waimea Canyon and the breathtaking cliffs of the Napali Coast. If you like hiking or kayaking, you've come to the right island, but you can also take it easy on any number of nearby beaches.

Take a riverboat along the Wailua River to the Fern Grotto, or hop a tour bus to see where many of your favorite movies were filmed. It's also a good spot for a luau if your ship stays in port late enough.

Hilo, Hawaii

The Big Island is the only island offering two major ports for cruise ships: Hilo on the east coast and Kona on the west. Hilo is the jumping-off point to visit Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, where you can hike through a lava tube or watch steam venting from the still-active volcano.

The area is also home to numerous waterfalls you can visit, such as Rainbow Falls and Akaka Falls, as well as black-sand beaches. Kayak or snorkel in Hilo Bay, or — for something different — visit the Volcano Winery to sample vintages made both with grapes and local fruits.

Related: How to choose the best Hawaiian island for you

Kona, Hawaii

The second cruise port on the island of Hawaii, Kona is one of the best ports for visiting a coffee plantation and sampling local Hawaiian coffee. For travelers more interested in ancient Polynesian history, the Pu'uhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park, the site of an old city of refuge, is a fascinating place to visit. Otherwise, Kona offers plenty of beaches, snorkeling opportunities and boat and submarine tours.

Lahaina or Kahului, Maui

Maui also has two cruise ports, but they serve the same area and attractions. The difference is that Kahului is in an industrial area near the airport. Cruise ships dock there, but you'll need to take a tour or other transportation to see the sights.

Lahaina is a major tourist destination for its restaurants, shops and boat tours, but ships must anchor and transport passengers to shore via tender boats.

Must-sees on Maui include the extinct volcano Haleakala (for sunset or sunrise visits or bike rides down the steep slopes), the twisty road to Hana with its waterfall views and many gorgeous white-sand beaches. Maui is the best Hawaii cruise port for whale watching in season or snorkeling in its clear waters. Visit the Maui Ocean Center to check out more sea life while staying dry.

When to book a Hawaii cruise

cruise to hawaii in july

The earlier you book a Hawaii cruise, the better. That's because the cruise lines offer comparatively few Hawaii sailings as compared to Caribbean and Bahamas cruises, for example.

Norwegian Cruise Line bases only one ship in the region; other lines only sail to the islands seasonally. Booking early will not only guarantee you get the cabin type you want on the sail date you prefer, but may also get you the lowest prices and promotional booking bonuses (i.e. free stuff). In addition, unless you live on the West Coast, a Hawaii cruise will require a long flight either to California or Honolulu, so you'll want plenty of time to find an airfare deal or available award seat.

Related: When is the best time to book a cruise?

What to bring on a Hawaii cruise

cruise to hawaii in july

What to bring on a Hawaii cruise depends on which cruise you're taking. If you're on a weeklong sailing on casual NCL, you can skip the dressy clothes and prioritize casual outfits that work with whatever beachy or sporty excursions you've got planned in Hawaii. Sun hats, sunglasses, reef-safe sunscreen and water-friendly shoes are all must-pack items. Don't forget your camera (or waterproof case for your cellphone) and binoculars for whale watching.

Travelers on a longer Hawaii sailing on a line like Princess will want to bring nicer clothes for dinners on board, as well as plenty of activities for all those sea days. That could include books or an e-reader, a packable board game, a knitting project or a journal. UnCruise passengers should pack hiking boots, moisture-wicking athletic clothing, plenty of swimsuits and waterproof bags to protect their gear.

Related: Cruise packing list: The ultimate guide to what to pack for a cruise

Bottom line

A cruise can be an ideal way to explore multiple Hawaiian islands in one trip and save on costs such as dinner and car rentals.

However, unlike in other cruise regions, travelers are limited in the itineraries and times of the year they can sail. Norwegian Cruise Line's Pride of America is a great way to visit the islands in just a week, but fans of leisurely trips with lots of sea days should look at round-trip cruises from California.

Once you've decided how you want to cruise Hawaii, you can seek out the best cruise fares so you're ready to say "Aloha!" to an incredible vacation when the right deal pops up.

10 Day Pride of America Hawaii Cruise & Land Combo

cruise to hawaii in july

Itinerary Details

This unique Hawaiian cruise gives you overnight stays in Maui and Kauai and visits to O'ahu and the Big Island of Hawaii. You’ll be on island time as you discovering cascading waterfalls, active volcanoes, black, green and white sand beaches, historic sites and unspoiled nature.

10 Day Pride of America Hawaii Cruise: Honolulu to Honolulu

This 10-day cruise takes you to the major islands of Hawaii aboard the five-star cruise vessel, Pride of America .

Begin your visit in Honolulu on the island of O'ahu. Honolulu is the largest city in Hawaii and a national treasure. Visit the only royal palace in the United States, stroll down Ala Moana or Waikiki Beach, or climb the Diamond Head for a stunning view of the island. Pay your respects at the Pearl Harbor and National Memorial Cemetery. Be sure to enjoy the vibrant food culture of Chinatown and the iconic sight of Aloha Tower before embarking on Pride of America .

Pride of America  is the only Norwegian cruise liner that sails round trips from Honolulu all year, letting you enjoy a Hawaiian vacation on your own schedule. Native Hawaiian ambassadors will help you appreciate the rich culture of the archipelago and the 15 restaurants, 12 bars and lounges, and excellent family accommodations such as an aqua park and bowling alley will fill your time between islands.

From Honolulu head to the island of Maui and the port of Kahului. Maui is perfect for adventure. Zip line down mountainsides, bike through the foothills or snorkel alongside turtles in the waters. Maui offers plenty of opportunities for your chosen leisure, whether that’s kayaking alongside Humpback whales in Makewa Bay, aiming for the green on one of its golf courses or relaxing on its many beaches.

On the Big Island of Hawaii you’ll see the verdant town of Hilo, where flowers line the sidewalks. Hawaii gets the most rainfall of anywhere in the United States and the landscape shows it. Green seems to cover everything as far as the eye can see. In Kona, you can enjoy the warm and crystal blue waters that make Hawaii such a popular spot for swimming, snorkeling, surfing and anything relating to water. For a look at the volcanic foundation of the Hawaiian Islands, head to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park where you can see the active volcano, Kilauea Volcano, and the Mauna Loa lava flow.

Your last stop before returning to Oahu and Honolulu is the island of Kauai. Anchoring at Nawiliwili port, you’ll have a perfect chance to explore the most beautiful island in Hawaii. Often called “The Garden Island,” Kauai is covered in natural wonder. The Kokee Mountains seemingly fill the sky while the Haena Rainforest covers everything beneath it. Kauai is also a perfect spot to have a luau and see how traditional Hawaiian life moves to its own rhythms.

This 10-day cruise offers unmatched comfort on an exploration of some of the most gorgeous islands on the planet.

Traveling to Hawaii during July

Weather, crowds, & prices for july.

Choosing the best time to visit the Hawaiian islands is pretty easy as there isn’t a wrong time to go. However, certain times of the year might appeal to you more than others. The stunning backdrop of Hawaii becomes pretty popular in July when school's out, and people have vacations on their minds. Here are some things to consider if you are planning a July trip to Hawaii.

Hawaii Weather in July

Grab your sunglasses. At this time of year, rain is rare. July is second only to June when it comes to the lowest levels of rainfall. That’s good news since for much of the year; you can encounter rain almost every day. Although these little shower bursts don’t last long, it does call for keeping an umbrella handy, especially in the evenings when rainfall is more common. Nonetheless, traveling at the low rainy season makes good sense.

Not only will you encounter less rain, but you will also enjoy near perfect daytime temperatures that remain in the mid to low 80s. That is the ideal weather for activities and visiting the local sights.

You will see very comfortable night temperatures in the low 70s, offering some relief if you find the 80s a little high in the day. Evening temperatures in July are balmy once compared to the spring and winter when it can go as low as 60 F. Instead, you can look forward to strolling on the beach without a sweater.

The waters of Hawaii are also warm and inviting at an average of 80 degrees. You will be able to enjoy tons of water sports without worrying about chilly waters. If you plan to head to higher ground, such as the summit of a volcano, the temperature can drop quite a bit. A jacket is probably a good idea when you head for the higher elevations of the mountains.

Hawaii Crowds in July

July is one of the top three months people tend to visit Hawaii. But don’t worry if you were thinking of planning your trip at this time of year. Hawaii offers so many attractions, activities, and areas to visit that you will rarely have to worry about crowds. However, keep in mind that July is summer vacation, so it is family time. The busiest time is early July thanks to Fourth of July celebrations.

Hawaii Costs in July

Hotel rates tend to spike for the July 4th weekend, reaching about $360-$380 per night. Overall, hotel rates tend to be above average in July. You can also find some deals closer to the annual average if you go a little later in the month. You will be traveling at a time of year when airfares tend to be higher. A good rule of thumb is to keep an eye out for deals on travel sites.

Hawaii Events & Highlights in July

One of the reasons Hawaii is so popular for the Fourth of July is that they are known for spectacular events and firework displays. We’re talking top Hawaiian performers and awe-inspiring displays that keep people coming back year after year. You might even be fighting for elbow room with some events seeing as many as 50,000 people or more in attendance. If that seems a little too crowded for your tastes, there are other events that you can consider throughout the month, such as:

  • Pineapple Festival : This Lanai festival is an annual event that can be accessed by ferry from Maui . Crafts, games, food booths, activities, prizes, exhibitors, and entertainment abound, and the day ends with a stunning firework display.
  • Prince Lot Hula Festival : This Oahu event is held at historic Iolani Palace and is the largest non-competitive hula celebration in Hawaii
  • Koloa Plantation Days : This 10-day event celebrates the many ethnic groups welcomed by Hawaiians when they came to work on the sugar plantations of Kauai . Celebrations include music, dance, costumes, and food.

July might be a little more crowded and expensive than most months, but it also offers some of the best weather and most exciting events.

Is July a Good Time to Go to Hawaii?

Compared to the other months of the year, July is an okay time to visit Hawaii. The temperatures in July are usually quite pleasant, with abundant sunshine. However, it is also the busiest tourist season due to schools being out for summer break and travelers wanting to take advantage of the warm weather.

As a result, expect to pay more for hotels than you would in other months. And if you’re planning on participating in any special events, like a luau or Fourth of July celebration, make sure you book well in advance. Otherwise, you may not be able to get in. We’ve got our list of the best luaus in Hawaii to help you get booking!

Reasons to Go to Hawaii in July

Hawaii is gorgeous in July, with sunny skies and comfortable temperatures. The ocean is perfect for swimming, snorkeling, and surfing. Plus, it’s summer break. So if you have kids or are just looking for fun, this is a great time to visit.

And you can’t forget about Independence Day. Seeing fireworks over the ocean on the 4th of July is a sight you won’t soon forget.

Reasons to Not Go to Hawaii in July

Hawaii can be quite crowded and expensive during the summer months. Hotels, restaurants, and attractions are often booked up weeks in advance. This can make it hard to find accommodations or get reservations for popular activities.

In addition, July is part of hurricane season. Although it isn’t likely that you’ll experience one, the chance is still there. So if you’re worried about your safety or don’t want to risk a trip being ruined by bad weather, visiting during another part of the year may be a better option.

Is Hawaii in July Nice? Weather Data

July is one of the driest and warmest months in Hawaii, with little to no rainfall. It’s part of the tropical summer, so you can expect daytime temperatures between 79°F (26°C) to 86°F (30°C). You really can’t complain about the weather in Hawaii in July.

Is Hawaii in July Rainy?

Weather data shows that July gets very little rain.

Of course, rainfall varies from island to island. If you want the lowest chance of showers, stick to Maui. It averages a measly 0.39 inches of rain in July. You’re much more likely to get rained on if you visit Kauai. There, the average is 1.77 inches throughout the month.

This chart has more information on four popular destinations throughout the state.

Now, it’s important to note that all the locations on this chart are on the leeward side of the island. That’s the side protected from the wind and rain. So if you’re headed to a spot on the windward side, like Hanalei, Kaneohe, or Hilo , you could experience more rain showers.

This image shows how the islands are divided. So as you’re making your vacation itinerary , take note of which side you’ll be visiting, as your weather conditions may vary a bit depending on where you are.

If you’re wanting to stay on the windward side of the islands, the summer months are a great time to do so. We love staying on north shore Oahu or Kauai in the summer months.

Hawaii in July - windward/leeward sides

As mentioned above, this month is known for sunny days and blue skies, so you shouldn’t need to worry about packing an umbrella around no matter where you’re staying. In the very unlikely event of all day showers, we have a great list of things to do when it rains in Hawaii .

If you’re curious about how it compares to the other months, this graph shows the average rainfall on the Hawaiian Islands throughout the year.

How Warm Is It in Hawaii in July?

The temperatures are typically quite pleasant during this time of year. Daytime highs generally range between 79-89°F (26-32°C), with lows in the mid-70s.

Of course, in a tropical climate, you’ll experience pretty pleasant weather in Hawaii no matter when you visit. The coldest low temperatures (in January and February) are in the high 60s.

The graphs below show the average highs and lows for the entire year. That way, you can better understand what to expect when you plan your trip.

Hawaii in July - Average high temperature

Each island has slightly different climate conditions, so expect variations depending on where you go. This chart shows July’s highs and lows across four popular areas on each island:

As you can see, Kailua-Kona, on the Big Island, has the highest temperatures during the day. You might get too warm if you’re not used to the heat and humidity. Maui and Kauai could be a bit more comfortable if you’re coming from a chillier, less-humid climate.

The Big Island also has the biggest temperature swing. This means you may get a bit chilly once the sun goes down. A long sleeve shirt or a light jacket might come in handy. The other islands also cool down at night, but not nearly as much.

Can You Swim in Hawaii in July?

Absolutely! The ocean is warm and inviting, with temperatures hovering around 80°F (27°C). That’s perfect for swimming, snorkeling, and surfing. Just be sure to check the local forecast before you hit the beach, as conditions can vary from day to day.

Hawaii in July - Hawaiian island ocean temperature

What Are the Ocean Conditions Like in July?

Ocean conditions are ideal in the summer months, so this is the best time for you to check out the north shores of the islands where waters are unsafe in the winter. Remember that the Pacific Ocean is fierce. It can change very quickly, and strong currents can develop. So make sure to stay within view of the lifeguards, don’t enter the water if you’re not a strong swimmer, and always be aware of your surroundings.

When Is Hurricane Season in Hawaii?

Hurricane season in Hawaii runs from June to November. So July is technically at risk for hurricanes. That said, it’s rare that a hurricane actually hits the islands during this time. In fact, the last major hurricane to make landfall was Hurricane Iniki in 1992, and only a handful of other hurricanes have made landfall since 1950.

Still, you should be aware of the risk and check the weather forecast before you embark on your journey to the islands.

How Busy is Hawaii in July?

July is one of the busiest times for tourists, which means the beaches, restaurants, and attractions are crowded.

To give you a sense of how many people visit Hawaii in July, let’s dive into some visitor data from 2022. And because travel still hasn’t gotten completely back to normal since the pandemic, let’s also examine the data from 2019.

You can see that the tourism industry is making a comeback. However, it’s still not quite back to where it used to be. That said, July is still the busiest month of the year . If you want to avoid the hustle and bustle of the tourist season, try visiting during spring or fall instead.

This graph can help you visualize the number of people who travel to Hawaii. You can use this to plan the best time for you to come based on the crowd sizes you’re comfortable with.

Hawaii in July - 2022 total monthly visitors

Which Hawaiian Islands Are the Busiest in July?

Oahu is the busiest of all the Hawaiian Islands in July (and year-round). This is followed closely by Maui, which is also a popular spot during this time of year. Kauai and The Big Island tend to be less crowded than the other two.

But if you’re really trying to avoid large groups of people, Molokai and Lanai are your best bet. These two islands are less populated and offer a more peaceful atmosphere than the other four.

Here’s a chart breaking down the number of visitors by island.

And this graph shows the total number of visitors by island throughout 2022. With everything that Oahu has to offer , it’s no wonder that it remains the most popular destination all year long.

Hawaii in July - 2022 monthly visitors to the islands

Is Hawaii Cheaper in July?

Unfortunately, no. Prices tend to go up during the tourist season due to increased demand. Some discounts may be available if you book early or stay in an off-season area, but don’t expect big savings.

To help you budget for your trip, here’s a look at the average daily rate for hotels in July on the four main islands. As you can tell, the price varies greatly from one place to another.

If you’re trying to do Hawaii without breaking the bank, plan on staying on Oahu. It’s the most affordable of all the islands, with an average daily rate that’s almost $400 less per night than Maui.

Try traveling in October or November if you have your heart set on a Maui hotel. These months are the least expensive.

This chart shows the average hotel rates by island for 2022. It can help you pinpoint the month and island that best aligns with your vacation budget.

15 top adults-only cruises for 2025 & 2026.

Pack your bags and leave the kids behind for your next cruise adventure.

Top Adults-Only Cruises

If your idea of getting away from it all includes a vacation without the kids, consider booking an adults-only or adults-oriented cruise . While some lines provide a fully adults-only experience (i.e., children are not allowed on board), others offer adult-focused venues and activities on the ship to keep you separate from younger patrons.

The following cruise lines provide upscale amenities, immersive excursions, sophisticated dining options, lively nighttime entertainment and time for relaxation among like-minded – and similarly aged – travelers.

Viking Ocean Cruises

Travelers ages 18 and older are welcome aboard Viking 's adults-only ships, which feature destination-focused itineraries around the world. The line's 11 oceangoing ships carry between 930 and 998 guests (at double occupancy) and offer luxurious, comfortable Scandinavian-style spaces. The line will add Viking Vesta to its ocean fleet in 2025.

Viking's exploration program boasts special access to behind-the-scenes experiences curated for travelers who are interested in history, food, the arts or science. Immerse yourself in local culture with a visit to a traditional family farm near Bergen, Norway, or spend an evening dining on Chinese specialties at a home-hosted dinner in Shanghai .

In addition to these off-the-beaten-path excursions, guests can visit iconic sites like the ancient city of Ephesus (Kuşadasi) in Turkey and the Acropolis in Athens, Greece . Viking also hosts onboard enrichment programs like cooking classes and lectures by historians. Cruise fares include stateroom accommodations with a private veranda, all meals (including specialty dining venues), wine and beer at onboard lunch and dinner, 24-hour room service, one free excursion per port, complimentary Wi-Fi access, and access to onboard amenities such as the Nordic Spa and fitness center.

In addition to its ocean vessels, Viking offers river cruises in destinations around the world – including Mississippi River cruises aboard Viking Mississippi. The line also has two Polar Class 6 expedition ships, Viking Octantis and Viking Polaris, which traverse waterways from Canada, the U.S. and South America to remote destinations in Antarctica and the Arctic.

Virgin Voyages

Virgin Voyages offers an adults-only retreat for guests ages 18 and older. The line currently has three sister ships: Scarlet Lady (the first in the fleet), Valiant Lady and Resilient Lady . The line's fourth ship, Brilliant Lady, is set to debut in September 2025.

All the ships in this adults-only cruise line feature 1,404 cabins (most with balconies) and RockStar Quarters suites, where guests have access to Richard's Rooftop, an exclusive outdoor deck space. The superyacht-inspired vessels boast 20-plus eateries, including restaurants by Michelin-starred chefs, and a variety of onboard fitness and wellness spaces. At Redemption Spa, relax and recharge in the mud room or salt therapy chamber – and then take rejuvenating dips in the hot and cold plunge pools. You can even order a bottle of bubbly anywhere on the ship via the Virgin Voyages app's secret "Shake for Champagne" feature.

Itineraries on Virgin Voyages span destinations in the Caribbean, Europe and Morocco, as well as trans-Atlantic crossings. The line will also feature 21 new ports across its global fleet in 2025, including destinations in Iceland, Turkey, Oman, Italy, Portugal, the Cayman Islands and more. Cruise fares cover meals at all the dining venues and basic beverages such as soda, water, tea and coffee. Gratuities for the crew, Wi-Fi access, entertainment and group fitness classes are also included. While on board, be sure to indulge in a swanky dinner at The Wake and an immersive show at The Red Room, a unique multiform theater at sea.

P&O Cruises

Two ships in P&O Cruises' U.K.-based fleet – Arcadia and Aurora – are exclusively for adults 18 and older. Arcadia, the slightly newer of the two ships (debuted in 2005), carries 2,094 guests at double occupancy, plus 866 crew. The ship departs from Southampton in the U.K. and sails to a variety of European destinations, ranging from Spain and the Canary Islands to Norway and Iceland; some cruises visit the U.S. and Canada. The ship will also sail world cruises in January 2025 and 2026.

Arcadia's 15 restaurants, cafes and bars include Indian cuisine with a British twist at Sindhu, as well as steaks and seafood by renowned British chef Marco Pierre White at Ocean Grill. Passengers can take a class to sample the line's branded gins; sip Champagne at Intermezzo, the ship's cocktail and Champagne venue; or enjoy a pre-dinner aperitif at the yacht-inspired Spinnaker. After exploring exciting ports of call, head back on board to enjoy Arcadia's elegant interiors and top-notch service. You can splurge on a stone therapy treatment and a visit to the thermal suite at the spa for some extra pampering, followed by a live show at the three-tiered theater, The Palladium. Then, finish off the evening dancing the night away at The Globe.

Aurora is a slightly more intimate ship, carrying 1,874 passengers (double occupancy) and 850 crew members. A four-level atrium gallery sits at the heart of the vessel. Itineraries include destinations in the Mediterranean, the Baltic, the British Isles, Iceland, the Caribbean and South America. There are 19 restaurants, bars and cafes on the ship, including club-style restaurant Alexandria and casual spots like The Beach House. After dinner, live entertainment and dancing await you at the show lounge Carmen's, as do larger productions at the ritzy 660-seat Curzon Theatre.

Top Cruises Designed for Adults

While some all-inclusive – or mostly all-inclusive – boutique and luxury cruise lines are family-friendly, many of the onboard venues and activities are adult-by-design. Since there are few (or no) activities geared toward younger cruisers and no babysitting services, you typically won't find parents with young children on these ships.

Azamara's four upscale boutique ships provide immersive travel experiences geared toward adults. These smaller ships – accommodating a maximum of 702 guests – sail waterways and rivers that larger ships can't access, docking in city centers and unique ports of call around the globe.

Many Azamara voyages also offer longer stays and overnights in port, unlike some competitors' itineraries. Some even feature special events, such as a 12-night voyage from Rome to watch the Monaco Grand Prix in May 2025, or a 25-night cruise in February 2025 from Buenos Aires, Argentina , to attend Carnival in Rio de Janeiro . In addition, the line is extending its offerings on Country Intensive voyages in 2024 and 2025 with itineraries in various continental European countries, the United Kingdom, South Africa, Iceland and Australia.

On board, you'll find a wide selection of casual and formal dining options ranging from Windows Cafe to the main dining room, Discoveries Restaurant. Specialty restaurant offerings include top-notch steak and seafood at Prime C and Italian fare at Aqualina. Atlas Bar is a unique venue on Azamara Onward (the line's newest ship), though its artisanal cocktail menu is also available on the line's other ships. Discoveries Lounge is another guest-favorite spot, and wine aficionados will enjoy pairing limited-production and rare vintages from the Wine Cellar with dinner.

Cruise fares include stateroom accommodations; select spirits, wine and beer; gratuities; 24-hour room service; and nonalcoholic beverages. You'll also have access to complimentary AzAmazing Celebrations with special evening and daytime events ashore and on the ship. You can purchase a package that includes additional amenities like unlimited Wi-Fi, specialty dining, shore excursion credits and other perks. Butler service and other extras come with suite accommodations.

When it launched in 2019, Scenic Eclipse I was touted as "The World's First Discovery Yacht." The intimate vessel offers an all-inclusive, ultra-luxurious experience for just 228 guests (double occupancy). The line's second luxury yacht, Scenic Eclipse II, which is nearly identical to its sister ship, debuted from Lisbon, Portugal , in April 2023. The Polar Class 6 rating enables these two yachts to sail to destinations like Antarctica; on these expedition-style voyages, the ship carries only 200 guests and offers a nearly one-to-one crew-to-guest ratio.

All suite accommodations include a private veranda or terrace; butler service; state-of-the-art amenities; a king-size Scenic Slumber Bed; and an in-suite minibar stocked with wine, spirits and other personally selected beverages. You'll also find indulgences like onboard helicopters for intimate excursions and the line's submersibles for underwater exploration.

Guests can enjoy up to 10 dining experiences on the ship, including French fine dining at Lumière; innovative Asian flavors at Koko's Asian Fusion; Italian, steak and seafood specialties at Elements; or an immersive dining experience at Chef's Garden @ Epicure. When it's time for an after-dinner drink, sample craft cocktails or the impressive selection of whiskeys available at Scenic Lounge Bar. Other onboard activities include getting an invigorating treatment at Senses Spa or just relaxing with Champagne and spectacular views on deck 10 at the Sky Bar.

Scenic's ships sail to destinations in Australia and the South Pacific; Europe and the Mediterranean; Asia; the Americas and the Caribbean; and the polar regions of Antarctica and the Arctic.

Other Top Adults-Only Cruise Options

While these larger ships offer activities for families and children of all ages, adults can also find hidden retreats and venues just for grown-ups. These spaces are typically quieter and situated away from the crowds.

Celebrity Cruises offers spaces created with adult guests in mind. On Celebrity Beyond and the newest addition to the fleet, Celebrity Ascent , adults can have a unique dining experience at Le Voyage by Daniel Boulud. While there, you can also grab a light breakfast or lunch at the Spa Cafe and Juice Bar, or order your favorite cocktail while lounging in the hot tub.

The Sanctuary, a retreat for guests ages 18 and older, offers an escape from bustling public spaces. The relaxing top-deck venue is available on all Princess Cruises ships and features plush lounge chairs, a spa-like setting and Serenity Stewards, who serve light bites and other refreshments. To fully unwind, consider reserving a private cabana, where you can book an open-air massage. The child-free venue varies from ship to ship, with some offering the exclusive Retreat pool, cabanas and a bar area, and newer iterations featuring more space.

Spellbound by Magic Castle is an exciting new venue aboard the line's newest ship, Sun Princess, for adults 21 and older. The collaboration with The Magic Castle private club in Hollywood offers guests an evening of magic, illusions and theatrical cocktails in a Victorian-inspired space.

If you're heading off the ship for an excursion to Princess Cays (the cruise line's private island in the Bahamas), plan to chill out for the day in an adults-only Sanctuary Bungalow. Located just minutes from the ocean and beach, the rentals accommodate four people, and the price includes two complimentary float rentals. You can also order a gourmet picnic to enjoy while lounging on shore.

Back on the ship, adults can reserve a spot for the line's new Winemaker Dinners, a partnership with Caymus Vineyards. Winemaker Chuck Wagner personally selected the wines from the notable Napa Valley winery to pair with the elevated five-course menu.

Solarium is Royal Caribbean International 's complimentary, child-free space open to guests 18 and older. Located at the front of every ship in the fleet, this indoor-outdoor oasis (or indoor-only on Quantum Class ships) offers impressive vistas and endless views of the sea. Thanks to a full glass canopy over the interior space, adult passengers can enjoy quiet lounging areas, swimming pools and whirlpool tubs with a view, no matter the weather. Select ships feature a cascading lagoon for further relaxation.

Be sure to grab a tropical cocktail or zero-proof drink at Solarium Bar (or Sunshine Bar, on Quantum ships) to sip poolside while enjoying the ocean vistas. Guests of both bars must be at least 21 years old when sailing from North America or a minimum of 18 when departing from South America, Europe, Asia, Australia and New Zealand.

Adult cruisers (18 and older) can relax and chill out at the first suspended infinity pool at sea at The Hideaway on Royal Caribbean's newest ship, Icon of the Seas. The beach-vibe neighborhood, perched eight stories above the sea at the back of the ship, features Champagne cocktails, a DJ spinning tunes, full-size daybeds, a wraparound bar, and endless ocean and sunset views from the multilevel terrace.

Frequently Asked Questions

"Adults-only cruise ships – or adults-only spaces on cruise ships – have become increasingly popular over the years," says Chris Gray Faust, executive editor at Cruise Critic. "That's not only because fewer people are having families. It's also because parents themselves often want the chance to get away, either by themselves for a romantic trip or with friends to celebrate a special occasion, girls' or guys' weekend, or milestone birthdays."

"I seek out adult spaces on cruise ships primarily because I want my experience on a ship to mirror my life on land – a little quieter, with more sophisticated food and drink options," she explains. "I also appreciate the opportunity to connect with my friends who are parents in a space where we can have personal one-on-one conversations or let loose a bit with some drinks. Adults with children are more than just their kids, after all – and they also appreciate a space where they don't have to worry about their little ones."

Anne Scully, a partner at the luxury travel company EMBARK Beyond, says, "With so many cruise lines and sailings, it's always a good idea to have options – and adults-only cruises are very popular." She adds, "Viking and Virgin have always focused on adults-only cruises and most river cruises also cater to adult passengers."

Adults-only cruises are designed with guests ages 18 and older in mind, from the staterooms and dining venues to the onboard entertainment and shore excursions. What you typically won't find on board are water or theme parks, climbing walls, game rooms, and restaurants serving kid-friendly foods.

If you're looking for a relaxing, fun and romantic vacation without the kids in tow – and you don't want to deal with the other passengers' children on your getaway – consider booking a sailing specifically for cruisers at least 18 years old. Alternatively, select a cruise line or ship that caters to mostly adults and doesn't offer any services, kids clubs, babysitting or activities for children.

You don't have to be a kid to be a Disney Cruise Line fan. While the line does not have an adults-only vessel within the fleet, there are plenty of kid-free spaces for adults only. Adults can enjoy cocktails, dinner and entertainment in several venues and relax at designated pool areas on the ship. There's also private, adults-only stretch of beach, Serenity Bay, on the line's private island, Castaway Cay.

In addition, Disney offers one of the best programs to keep youngsters entertained at sea, so you'll find that many of the children hang out in the kids club during the day and in the evening. These club spaces are divided by age groups, and they're typically open until midnight or 1 a.m. so parents – and even adults without kids – can enjoy a night out on the ship sans kids.

Cruise ships under investigation after sailing illegally close to Hawaii's protected coast

cruise to hawaii in july

Hawaii state officials are investigating two cruise ships that sailed illegally close to Kauai’s protected Na Pali Coastline, according to an emailed statement by the Hawaii Tourism Authority (HTA) on Tuesday.

“Images of the ships have been circulating on social media, and vigilant kamaaina (locals) alerted the authorities to the issue,” the release said.

In the statement, HTA said it is in contact with the cruise lines as other cruise operators who sail to Hawaii to “underscore the importance of compliance with all state and local regulations in our islands.”

The Hawaii State Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR), which governs Hawaii’s nearshore waters, declined to comment on the ongoing investigation.

DLNR and HTA did not confirm which cruise lines were sailing “much closer to Kauaʻi’s north shore than allowed by state regulations.” However, posts on social media show one of the ships to be the Celebrity Edge, which is operated by Celebrity Cruises and has the capacity to hold almost 3,000 passengers.

“We have robust policies in place to maintain compliance with local regulations around the world," a spokesperson for Celebrity's parent company, Royal Caribbean Group, said in an emailed statement. "We will continue to assess our policies and take necessary steps to ensure we continue to operate in the most responsible manner possible."

With striking cliffs, waterfalls and lush valleys, the Na Pali Coast is one of Hawaii's iconic shorelines. This is partially due to its appearance in popular movies like, "King Kong," "Pirates of the Caribbean," and "Jurassic Park."

Home to endemic flora and fauna, the state park comprises over 3,500 protected acres. It is also a sacred place where the ancient Native Hawaiians once lived, and their heiaus (temples) and petroglyphs can still be found there today.

The waters surrounding the coastline are also protected. Since 1988, state law prohibits commercial vessels with 50 or more passengers from operating “within the Na Pali Coast ocean waters.” These waters are defined as 3,000 feet seaward along the eastern boundary of Moloaa Bay and the southernmost boundary of the Na Pali Coast State Park.

DLNR’s Division of Conservation and Resource Enforcement told Hawaii News Now it received “numerous reports” from residents who spotted the cruise ships sailing in “very shallow water” at approximately only 1,000 feet offshore last week.

“Some of the shots that were taken from the air actually showed the sand being disturbed at the bottom, so all of these environmental impacts that it created was very upsetting to me,” Presley Wann, a Kauai resident, told Hawaii News Now.

K AUAI (HawaiiNewsNow) - The state Land Department is investigating after Kauai advocates say a cruise ship got too close to shore at the Na Pali Coast.

Kauai community advocates said the ship appeared to be in very shallow water and about 1,000 feet offshore.

According to Celebrity Cruise’s website, the Celebrity Edge is advertising Hawaii cruises from Vancouver.

But a passenger told HNN they came from Sydney, Australia.

“It’s just plain wrong to be in that close to the shore. Period,” said resident Presley Wann.

“I find it very offensive, very upsetting because of the lack of protocol.”

One Na Pali tour manager and captain says it’s the first time he’s seen an incident like this.

“I’ve never seen this in 20 years of Na Pali Coast tours in my life. It’s mind blown,” said Sam Martin.

The DLNR said it’s “aware of the situation and is investigating. We are also consulting our partners with the U.S. Coast Guard and state Department of Transportation on this matter. We have nothing more to add at this time.”

Added state DOCARE Enforcement Chief Jason Redulla: “We’ve received numerous reports. Our officers on the island of Kauai and in Honolulu are working this case.”

Wann worries about cultural and environmental impacts.

“Some of the shots that were taken from the air actually showed the sand being disturbed at the bottom so all of these environmental impacts that it created was very upsetting to me,” said Wann.

The ship was docked at Honolulu Harbor on Wednesday and Wann met with the state Boating Division.

“I understand that that DLNR has taken at least one of their agencies and may have been on board taking statements from the cruise ship,” said Wann.

Hawaii administrative rules mention a 3,000 foot seaward from shore rule and commercial vessels with more than 50 passengers are not permitted to operate with Na Pali Coast Ocean waters.

State investigating cruise ships anchored near Na Pali Coast

The Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources is investigating whether a cruise ship, possibly two, recently anchored too closely to the Na Pali Coast on Kauai, following complaints.

Approximately a week ago, DLNR said, community members called in concerns about a large cruise ship anchored very close to the Na Pali Coast. The concerns over the ship said to be the Celebrity Edge, were also posted to social media, with video footage.

The Hawaii Tourism Authority today issued an email saying it is “engaging with government authorities and the cruise industry in the matter of two cruise ships that were much closer to Kauai’s north shore than allowed by state regulations.”

“Images of the ships have been circulating on social media, and vigilant kamaaina alerted the authorities to the issue,” said HTA in its email blast. “The Department of Land and Natural Resources, which governs Hawaii’s near-shore waters on behalf of the people of Hawaii, is investigating.”

HTA said it is also in contact with the cruise lines involved, as well as other cruise operators who visit Hawaii, to “underscore the importance of compliance with all state and local regulations in our islands.”

State laws governing Na Pali Coast ocean waters say “in no case shall a commercial vessel having a passenger carrying capacity of 50 or more passengers be permitted to operate within the Na Pali Coast ocean waters.”

Nor is a commercial operator allowed to embark or disembark passengers along the shoreline within Na Pali Coast ocean waters unless it has been issued a permit by the Board of Land and Natural Resources.

Anyone who believes a boat or ship is operating inappropriately can report it to 808-643-DLNR (3567).

What the total solar eclipse really looked like exactly a month ago.

After a frenzy of excitement, the total solar eclipse of Monday, April 8, across Mexico, the U.S. and Canada has passed into history.

In the weeks since, astrophotographers have issued many painstakingly processed images of the sun’s intricate corona—its white outer atmosphere that’s only visible during totality—such as this one from Petr Horálek:

Petr Horálek, from the Institute of Physics in Opava, was in Mexico for the eclipse. The clouds ... [+] cleared and Petr could take this beautiful shot of the Sun’s awe-inspiring corona.

However, that’s not what the total solar eclipse looked like on April 8. For many, it was an event drastically affected by clouds and rain.

Texas was predicted to be the best place to watch the eclipse because it had the best chance of clear skies. Meanwhile, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine were said to have the worst chance of having clear skies.

In the event, almost the reverse was true, with clear skies in Arkansas, Indiana, much of northeast U.S. and Canada. Millions struggled to find clear skies, and weather forecasts proved once again to be unreliable.

This total solar eclipse, the longest totality in the contiguous U.S. since 1806 and the last until 2044, began over the South Pacific Ocean and reached partly cloudy skies over Mazatlan on Mexico’s Pacific coast at around 11:07 a.m. PDT.

The maximum totality was had in Nazas in Durango, Mexico, though high cirrus cloud also affected those in Torreón in Coahuila, long predicted to be the “best” place for clear skies of anywhere on the 10,000 miles long, 125 miles wide path of totality.

As it entered the U.S., the prospects of a clear sky dipped, with Junction in the Texas Hill Country cloudy despite the weather forecasts suggesting otherwise. The same was true for much of Texas, which, rather than being “ground zero” for the eclipse, turned out to be anything but.

Dallas, Texas, saw the eclipse, as did much of Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Ohio and Indiana. Clouds ruined the chance of a clear view of totality in much of Pennsylvania and Western New York, as they did in southern Ontario in Canada.

Quebec, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine had the clearest skies. Ditto New Brunswick in Canada, though Newfoundland has clouds. Meanwhile, in orbit, the International Space Station got into position ot whizz across North America just at the right moment to capture the passage of the moon’s shadow across the northeastern U.S. and Canada.

Orbiting 260 miles above the Northeastern coast of the United States, the Expedition 71 crew ... [+] experienced the 2024 solar eclipse from space. Pictured here is the umbra, or the Moon's shadow, passing over Earth. Aboard the International Space Station to witness the celestial event was NASA astronauts Matthew Dominick, Michael Barratt, Jeanette Epps, and Tracy Dyson, as well as cosmonauts Oleg Kononenko, Nikolai Chub, and Alexander Grebenkin.

The next total solar eclipse will occur on August 12, 2026, and be visible from Greenland, western Iceland and northern Spain. Cruise ships will gather off all three territories, though the clearest weather is predicted to be in inland Spain (northwest of Madrid) and close to Mallorca. From Mallorca—a Balearic Island in the Mediterranean Sea—eclipse chasers will see an eclipsed sun sink into the ocean. But only if there’s a clear horizon.

A total solar eclipse is seen from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Monday, April 8, 2024, in ... [+] Indianapolis, Indiana.

The following five total solar eclipses are:

  • August 12, 2026: Russia, Greenland, Iceland and Spain (max. totality is 2 minutes and 18 seconds in Iceland).
  • August 2, 2027: Spain, Gibraltar, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Sudan, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Somalia and British Indian Ocean Territory (max. totality is 6 minutes and 23 seconds in Egypt)
  • July 22, 2028: Christmas Island, Cocos Islands, Australia and New Zealand (max. totality is 5 minutes and 10 seconds in Western Australia).
  • November 25, 2030: Namibia, Botswana, South Africa, Lesotho and Australia (max. totality is 3 minutes and 44 seconds in the Indian Ocean).
  • November 14, 2031: Pacific Ocean (max. totality is 1 minute 8 seconds from a cruise ship south of Hawaii).

Wishing you clear skies and wide eyes.

Mental health support at crucial point for fire survivors on Maui

Mental health expert says it’s hard to be well on Maui right now.

For the thousands of people who survived the Maui fires last August, the trauma of what they lived through still lingers.

Lahaina painter Kirk Boes and his wife Laura have lived on Lahaina together for more than 40 years. They evacuated on August 8, only to return three days later. They were overwhelmed with grief at the destruction left behind.

“There's the initial disbelief, just denial,” Boes told ABC News. “I wasn't even registering what I was seeing. Then it hit me. What really did happen.”

PHOTO: Maui Strong 808

Nearly half of the victims in the Lahaina fire died in Boes’ neighborhood, known as Kuhua Camp. Many of those victims were found on Boes’ dead-end street.

“We lost 19 of our neighbors just in this five house radius right here. People that I've been waving to hello to for a decade,” Boes said, pointing to neighboring homes.

Kirk said he became separated from his wife on August 8, as he ran ahead of their car to find a safe evacuation route. He said they eventually found each other near the Banyan Tree.

“When you go through something this heavy, it brings you together, but it's also like your nerves are raw,” he said.

MORE: Maui Strong 808: 6 months later, police review response to deadly fires

Laura Boes lost many animals in the fire. “She cried every night, sometimes twice a day… for six months,” Boes said about his wife. For months Kirk suffered from flashbacks and sleepless nights. Eventually the couple sought therapy from a close friend to regain a state of health or well being, or olakino in the Hawaiian language.

The cornerstone of healing for the Boes family is rooted in faith. Kirk was once angry at officials for not sounding the sirens and possibly preventing loss of life. He said he later found a piece of Scripture about forgiveness in the debris of his home.

“And wow, it's like a switch went on in my life that day, and I began to pray for all those people that I was really angry with,” Boes said. “I want them to know that I forgive them, right? Because when I forgave them, I was able to move into healing.”

The pain of losing someone deepens with distance for Kathleen Hennricks, who lives in Oregon. Her sister Rebecca “Becky” Ann Rans died in the fire with her partner Doug Gloege, a few blocks from the Boes’ home. Rans, 57, was a mother of three boys.

“My sister was a, I always call her a free spirit, because she was somebody that went her own path,” Hennricks told ABC. “I know that she absolutely was absolutely the best mother to her boys that she knew how to be and was just such a caring and giving person.”

Hennricks said she has found comfort leaning on people who have also suffered in the tragedy.

VIDEO: Maui Strong 808: Children search for hope and healing after wildfires

“There are so many other people that have been affected by this tragedy, and there is most definitely comfort. And I know that I have found a huge comfort with the people that love my sister. And I think that that does kind of help fill that void just a little bit, is talking to the people that knew her and loved her and hearing stories that I had never heard before. It was like her being here at times.”

Kathleen Hennricks said she has also coped with the loss through art therapy.

“One of the things that I do if I'm having a rough day is I do watercolor painting. I really enjoy just getting into my office and just painting… and I know that that's something that she enjoyed as well,” Hennricks said. “It gives me that ability to connect with her, fill that void a little bit.”

Rans’ family has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the state, the county of Maui, Hawaiian Electric, and the largest private landholder in Hawaii. They claim overgrown vegetation on unkept land, aging electrical infrastructure, and the county’s lack of emergency preparation contributed to Rans’ death. Boes has also filed a lawsuit.

In statements to ABC News, both the county of Maui and the Hawaii State Attorney General office told ABC News they do not comment on pending litigation, and said the ATF and Maui Fire and Public Safety Department are “conducting an investigation into the cause."

Hawaiian Electric declined to comment on the lawsuit, but in an August statement wrote the morning fire appeared to have been caused by power lines that fell in high winds, and was later declared “extinguished” by Maui County Fire Department. The statement claims a second fire in the afternoon began in the same area, after their power lines had been de-energized for more than six hours, and its cause has not been determined. Hennricks also submitted written testimony to Congress.

“Our quest for justice has been, on top of the grief. I think the grief is what drives the quest for justice,” Hennricks said. “It's the fact that we lost her is obviously detrimental. The after effects, the knowing that this could have been prevented, the knowing how many people were affected during this event, has just been catastrophic. It's hard enough to grieve over somebody that you've lost, but to know that so many people that were affected continue to be affected, I think has been probably one of the most devastating things of all. And we want answers,” she said.

The fires on Maui not only left behind a trail of physical destruction, but an invisible one, too.

With suicide rates rising nearly 16% among Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders from 2021-2022, mental health continues to be a big concern on Maui, especially since all but one full-service medical facility in Lahaina was destroyed.

And the housing shortage and lack of safe spaces for those living with mental health issues has exacerbated the problem on Maui, according to Nicole Hokoana, CEO of Maui Behavioral Health Resources. MBHR operates 3 nonprofits that offer mental health services and substance use treatment across the island.

“The people that we see and have been working with have already been living with, right living with these types of struggles, so the fires really just made everything worse,” she said. “It’s really hard to be well on Maui right now,” said Hokoana.

Hawaii State House Representative Elle Cochran, who represents West Maui, agreed.

“Where is the light at the end of the tunnel? Where is the ray of hope? I mean, where's the help? And people are frustrated and they feel like, there's a lot of people just made it through COVID. They just finally got back on their feet, they finally got to rebuild their lives, businesses, what have you, and now this happens.”

Hawaii was awarded $17 million in federal funding for mental health support shortly after the August fires. And since July 2022, Hawaii has operated the nation’s first state legislated Office of Wellness and Resilience; its aim is to make Hawaii a trauma-informed state and break down barriers that impact health. OWR offers mental health programs at the resorts where displaced victims are sheltered including music therapy.

Cochran says community outreach is crucial, including “to just get out and be boots on the ground literally and walk the beaches, go to the parks, go to the tent cities and what have you, to the hotels.”

David “Kawika” Mattos’ group, Maui Family Support Services Kāne Connections, regularly line the streets of Maui and wave signs to encourage residents to talk about mental health and prevent suicide. Mattos also hosts a men’s group at a resort shelter to help men process their trauma, but also move forward and to support each other and continue to grow as men and fathers.

Cochran said, “I heard from quite a few males that, 'it's hard,' but yet no one looks at them as they should having these types of feelings. And then looking at parents having to be strong and stand up and not fight from breaking down in front of their children, that was also a really huge challenge.”

Another outreach team caring for the Maui community is the Pūlama nā ‘Ohana Team.

“When we were so fortunate as to get some extra funding, because this is outside of what we typically do, what we wanted to do was recruit a team of people that are of Lahaina, of Maui,” Hokoana said. “Already connected, already serving, people that are trustworthy in the community.”

Su-Lynn Pohai Kaihewalu, a care coordinator on the team, said that trust is everything, and often it can begin with supplying food or water. “We gotta remember what the common goal is and it’s to supply our people with their needs. Get stability first, and then they can work on their mental health,” she said.

Adri Haia is also a care coordinator on the team, and leads a women’s circle, or wahine circle. She says there is a stigma around getting mental health on Maui. “We've been taught to hold it in, be strong, figure it out, and when you really need help, and because you've built that armor up, it's so hard to receive,” Haia said. “It's so hard to ask for help.”

With limited resources, mental health experts on Maui are trying to meet people where they are and tailor treatments.

“Not only are we a very multicultural, multilingual community, but I think we've learned from disasters in other communities, that people need different resources. We don't all heal in the same way. And indigenous healing was often communal healing,” Hokoana said. “It's really important to be open-minded and to be person-centered or community-centered, and listen to the people who have been most impacted, and try to deliver a wide range of services.”

One of the services offered on Maui is equine therapy. Every Wednesday Ronda Pali receives a ride from a local transportation company, to travel two hours away from Lahaina, and receive trauma informed care. She is in her tenth session, trying to cope with the trauma of losing her home in the fire, in addition to heart issues.

MORE: Maui's women take lead in projects to help land and residents recovering after wildfires

“The thought of the rebuild of Lahaina is overwhelming. It's definitely a source of strain and worry and fear,” Pali said. “Coming here is helping me keep things in perspective and it's giving me the sense that I am being cared for. My needs are met 100%. I am loved, I have purpose and I feel grounded.”

Spirit Horse Ranch has held more than 950 sessions for survivors looking to heal and recover. Ronda’s individualized therapy includes a self-regulation breathing technique, and deep connection work with her horse Beauty.

“Sometimes she'll turn around and put her face right in my face,” Pali said. “It brings me so much joy when she acknowledges me.”

“We don't get that nurturing that we need for love. So the horses provide this connection through working with them over time, to reconnect to the person’s self and then to another, which is the horse. And then also detach. How many times do we hold onto things that are not healthy? Relationships, jobs, places? So that's a big part of what we do,” DePonte said.

They also offer equine-assisted learning activities.

“We have about 20 different activities that we use in different various forms with the horses to unearth the trauma, heal it in real time with the horse as their partner,” DePonte said. “They love to help nudge the client, nurture the client, hold the client accountable. They'll stomp their foot and say, "You're not telling the truth." And spur them on a little bit. They wind them down, they build them up. It's incredible.”

Pali is also trying an alternative therapy technique called brainspotting.

“We have seen a lot of pain and confusion and loss. So brainspotting helps go through the ocular nerves into an inner resource part of the brain. It's called the reptilian part of the brain, where our memories are stored, our trauma's stored. And using various different techniques, a pointer or gaze spotting to direct and find an activation point, we can lock into very deep trauma that might be creating the reaction today, that fight, flight, or freeze. So if we unlock that, that trigger is no longer apparent, it's no longer holding them hostage,” DePonte said.

Pali said she can feel a difference.

“I feel loads of tension coming out of me every time I come here,” she said.
