'It was scary': Air Force evacuates 12-year-old boy in critical condition from cruise

carnival cruise recruitment

A 12-year-old boy in critical condition was medically evacuated from a Carnival cruise ship. Due to the ship being more than 350 miles offshore, the Air Force Reserve Command’s 920th Rescue Wing had to perform the air evacuation on Saturday, according to a press release by the combat search and rescue wing.

Aiden Bridges and his family were onboard the Carnival Venezia cruise ship , which was sailing along the East Coast to return to New York from the Caribbean, when he “fell ill,” according to a GoFundMe created by Aiden’s mom, Angela Bridges.

The pre-teen visited the ship's medical team, where he got an X-ray and learned he had a rupture in his bowel. The onboard doctors told the family Aiden needed to be medically evacuated immediately to a hospital in North Carolina for urgent surgery.

Angela Bridges did not immediately respond to USA TODAY’s request for comment.

At the time, the ship was on a sea day and scheduled to arrive back in New York on Monday.

What is medical evacuation insurance? Here's what to know

“Carnival Venezia's team worked with United States Coast Guard and Air Force officials to adjust its course Saturday so a medical helicopter could rendezvous with the ship when a guest on board needed treatment ashore,” Janna Rowell, a spokesperson for Carnival Cruise Line, told USA TODAY in an email statement.

Within hours of the call, the 920th Rescue Wing prepared and launched a rescue force from Florida comprising two HH-60G Pave Hawk helicopters, two HC-130J Combat King II aircraft and two teams of combat rescue officers and pararescuemen to fly to the ship’s position, the press release said. Flight doctors were used to identify the treatment station to which Aiden was transported.

“Everyone in the wing mobilized with exceptional speed. By uniting our efforts, we saved crucial time, delivering life-saving assistance six hours ahead of other response teams,” said Capt. Dylan Gann, 301st Rescue Squadron pilot, in the release.

Due to the ship’s remote location, the helicopters had to do air-to-air refueling. Pararescuements were hoisted down to the ship’s deck, and Aiden and his mother were brought up to the helicopter.

Mira Simanovsky, who was also onboard the cruise, told USA TODAY the passengers were alerted of a medical evacuation via an intercom announcement. Simanovsky was on her balcony when she saw the two helicopters and army planes circling the ship. She later moved to the deck to watch the rescue mission with other passengers.

“It was scary. Everybody was crying,” she said. An avid cruiser with 35 sailings under her belt said it was the first time she’d ever “seen anything like that.”

The crowd gathered on the deck were cheering and clapping when the mother and her son were airlifted.

By the time the aircraft returned to the station, the rescue mission had taken more than eight hours with over 1,000 miles flown.

Carnival said the ship then resumed its route to New York and arrived in New York Monday morning as normad.

“Thank you so much to everyone who has expressed well wishes and prayers and good thoughts for our sweet baby and the rest of our family,” Bridges wrote on the GoFundMe fundraiser to help the family with Aiden’s insurance deductible and out-of-pocket medical costs. “I can’t express to everyone how in awe I am at the outpouring of kindness and support.”

On Tuesday, Bridges posted an update on Aiden, saying he “has a long road of recovery ahead of him.”

Carnival Cruise Line shares controversial dining policy

Cruise-line workers have very difficult jobs.

Most work very long hours. Days off are rare and some staffers only rarely get to be outside or even see the light of day.

A bartender who works nights at the piano bar, which may not be open during port days, might be dispatched to a pool bar during the day.

In other cases, onboard staff shifts to work on the private islands that have become a key part of business for Carnival, Royal Caribbean ( RCL ) , and MSC Cruises.

Related: Carnival Cruise Line warns passengers about a pricey mistake

Cruise-employee contracts vary, but most waiters, room stewards, bartenders and other front-line service workers stay on board for six to nine months. That's a long time to work days that are often closer to 12 hours than 8, while they return to tiny cabins shared with at least one roommate.

When they're not working, regular crew members, including all the jobs listed above, do not have access to passenger areas. They can't grab a coffee at the onboard coffee shop or a meal at the buffet.

Officers and certain staff positions have more privileges than others. It varies by cruise line, but on Royal Caribbean, solo musicians, for example, are considered guest entertainers and essentially have full passenger privileges.

In addition, officers and select crew members are allowed to eat at the Lido Marketplace, Carnival's buffet. That might surprise passengers, but it also creates opportunities.

Carnival shares its buffet policy

Carnival's brand ambassador, John Heald, posts a lot on Facebook, and every one of his posts gets hundreds of comments. A post from May 4, however, had garnered more than 7,300 comments at last check.

It was not a post that seemed all that controversial.

"We do allow some of the officers and staff to eat on the Lido," he wrote. "And while a few people have been writing this morning to me saying they do not believe they should be allowed, I hope that many more will enjoy seeing them there and perhaps interacting with them."

Want the latest cruise news and deals? Sign up for the Come Cruise With Me newsletter.

That policy is similar to Royal Caribbean's rules. It's not uncommon to see officers in uniform and other workers wearing their job's outfit and eating at that cruise line's Windjammer buffet. In most cases, the cruise-line workers find an out-of-the-way table and, unlike passengers, they bus their plates.

Carnival's passengers seem to overwhelmingly support the concept of crew members eating in Lido.

Carnival passengers overwhelmingly support this

"I enjoy seeing the staff and crew eating on Lido with us," Joan Swanson wrote.

Many passengers said they liked getting the chance to interact with crew members.

"Love seeing them and speaking to them. Hearing them tell stories of their family. How hard they work to support them. We see how hard they work every day. I would love to have dinner with the staff," Debra Ramos posted.

Mary Downs O'Neal shared a practical reason she likes seeing cruise-line workers eating at the buffet.

"I love seeing the crew eating with the passengers. It tells me what is good to eat. For if it’s good to them, it should be good to me," she shared.

Many responders suggested that Carnival should allow all ship workers to eat in passenger areas.

"I wish Carnival allowed all of the staff to eat up there. They work so hard to provide all of us a great vacation and deserve a nice meal," Cindy Lee wrote. "I actually struggle going on cruises because I feel the industry treats staff differently. Why do the entertainment staff get to eat with us, but those serving us can't?"

Carnival and Royal Caribbean aren't being cruel in not allowing many crew members to use common areas like the buffet. In most cases, both companies' cruise ships have between 0.3 and 0.5 crew members per passenger. If all those crew members could use passenger areas freely, those areas would be pushed beyond their capacity.

Exclusive: Mom speaks out after Air Force rescued her son at sea from a cruise ship

The ship was more than 350 nautical miles off the coast of North Carolina.

A mother from Massachusetts spoke exclusively to ABC News after her 12-year-old son was part of a high-stakes cruise ship rescue by the Air Force, hundreds of miles off shore.

Angela Bridges was aboard the Carnival Venezia cruise ship with her family, including son Aiden, en route to New York City from the Caribbean when he fell seriously ill, concerning the medical team on board.

In an exclusive interview with ABC News, Bridges recalled the moment health professionals said, "'We're going to do an x-ray,'" and told her, "'it looks as though he has a perforation in his bowel -- the next thing that we need to do immediately is get him off the ship."

At the time of the critical medical incident, the ship was outside of North Carolina and more than 350 nautical miles off the coast.

The 920th Rescue Wing of the Air Force, consisting of two HH-60G Pave Hawk helicopters, two HC-130J Combat King II aircraft and two teams of combat rescue officers and pararescuemen, flew to the ship's position to safely extract the patient for transport to the nearest capable medical center.

"We were standing there watching the whole time, and I, just, you know, screaming and crying over the helicopter blades," Bridges recalled. "It was very scary."

"The amazing thing about this rescue is is actually how smooth it went. We went from zero notification to having aircraft ready to having aircraft in the air. And the young man in the hospital in in just a manner of hours," Lt. Col. Dave Underwood told ABC News.

Other cruise-goers watched on as the rescue workers lowered down, and grabbed the boy in critical condition, followed by his mom.

"After that the whole ship like cheered and was screaming and yelling 'yay'," passenger Katie Reed who took video of the moment, told ABC News. "It was really cool to witness and see like you know that this kid got a better chance at life because of like that team was phenomenal."

Aiden is currently recovering at a North Carolina hospital.

"I feel so much gratitude, gratefulness toward all the people who have been integral to my son's recovery," Bridges said. "It's not just the Coast Guard or the Air Force, or the doctors or the nurses. It's all of those people."

"Carnival Venezia's team worked with United States Coast Guard and Air Force officials to adjust its course Saturday so a medical helicopter could rendezvous with the ship when a guest on board needed treatment ashore. The ship then resumed its route to New York, arriving as scheduled Monday morning," Carnival said in a statement to ABC News.

44-Foot Whale Found Dead on Bow of Cruise Ship Coming Into New York

The endangered sei whale, usually found in deep waters, was discovered on the bow of a cruise ship as it arrived at the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal, marine authorities said.

By Livia Albeck-Ripka

As the cruise ship approached New York on Saturday, it was found to be carrying a grim, and unexpected, catch: The carcass of a 44-foot-long endangered whale, draped across its bow.

The whale, which marine authorities described as a sei whale, is known for its rapid swimming and preference for deep waters, far from the coast. Its body was discovered as the ship neared the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal, and the authorities were “immediately notified,” said MSC Cruises, which owns the ship.

A spokeswoman for the company said in an email that it had “comprehensive measures” in place to avoid such collisions, including training deck officers and altering itineraries in certain areas to avoid them. “We will continue to evaluate and update our procedures with our partners and the authorities,” she said.

Marine authorities said that they had towed the animal, estimated to weigh some 50,000 pounds, from the bow, and transferred it by boat to a beach in Sandy Hook, N.J., where they conducted a necropsy on Tuesday.

The investigation is continuing, but preliminary results — broken bones in the whale’s right flipper; tissue trauma along its right shoulder blade; a full stomach and decent layer of blubber — all pointed toward the animal having been in otherwise good health when it was likely struck and killed by the ship, said Robert A. DiGiovanni, the chief scientist of the Atlantic Marine Conservation Society, which is leading the investigation .

The whale was already “pretty decomposed” by the time scientists began the necropsy, he added, so they worked quickly to collect samples that could be tested for contaminants and other biotoxins that would indicate any other relevant health issues. “It looks like the animal was alive and it was hit by a vessel,” he said, noting that investigators had not ruled out other factors.

Mr. DiGiovanni said that his conservation group, which is federally authorized to respond to marine mammal strandings in New York, had dealt with more than 100 whales over the past several years, many of which had been entangled in nets or struck by vessels. Most of those whales were humpback and North Atlantic right whales, he added, noting that it was more uncommon to come across a sei whale.

Sei whales usually live in subtropical, temperate and subpolar waters and are named after the Norwegian word for pollock, “seje,” because the mammals are often found together with the fish. Their long, sleek bodies are usually dark blue or black with a cream-colored underside, and are often scarred by shark and lamprey bites.

In the 19th and 20th centuries, the whales were commercially hunted for their meat and oil, decimating their population, which is now designated as depleted under the Marine Mammal Protection Act .

Mr. DiGiovanni said that the death was a reminder that humans shared the open water with many other mammals. “When you’re out there, these animals might be there,” he said. “We need to make people more aware about how to operate around these animals.”

A spokeswoman for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said by email that mariners along the East Coast were encouraged to slow down their vessels, stay alert, and report any sightings of dead, injured or entangled whales to the authorities.

The FBI has arrested a Norwegian cruise ship worker in Alaska after he allegedly stabbed three people with medical scissors while onboard, reports say.

The suspect, identified as Ntando Sogoni from South Africa, was recently hired by Norwegian and boarded its Encore cruise ship in Seattle on Sunday, the Juneau Empire newspaper reports, citing an affidavit filed by FBI Special Agent Matthew Judy. The ship left that day for a weeklong, round-trip excursion to Alaska with stops including Glacier Bay National Park and Victoria, British Columbia.

"According to court documents, on May 6, 2024, Ntando Sogoni, 35, was working on the cruise ship when other ship employees observed the defendant attempting to deploy a lifeboat," the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Alaska said in a statement. "Sogoni was contacted by ship security and escorted to the ship’s medical center for an assessment.

"Upon arrival, Sogoni physically attacked a security guard and a male nurse inside an examination room and proceeded to enter another examination room where a woman, who is a U.S. citizen, was being examined," the statement continued. "He grabbed a pair of scissors and stabbed the woman multiple times in the arm, hand and face. He also stabbed two security guards who intervened -- one in the head and one in the back and shoulders."

Sogoni, who officials say was detained in the ship’s jail, was arrested by the FBI on Tuesday in Juneau, Alaska.

He is now facing a charge of assault with a dangerous weapon within maritime and territorial jurisdiction.

If convicted, he faces a maximum 10-year prison sentence and a $250,000 fine.

A Norwegian spokesperson told FOX Business that after its "newly employed crew member" became "violent without provocation," a security team "quickly detained him, and the onboard medical staff treated those involved for non-life-threatening injuries.

"We condemn violent behavior of this nature and are committed to the safety and security of all crew members and guests on our ships," the spokesperson added. "We commend the onboard security team for their brave actions."

920th Rescue Wing performs dramatic medical rescue at sea from cruise ship in Atlantic

carnival cruise recruitment

A dramatic helicopter rescue at sea by Brevard-based military personnel has captured international attention. The rescue from a cruise ship sailing off the Atlantic coast involved a child with a medical emergency.

The 920th Rescue Wing said it successfully conducted the civilian medical airlift operation of a patient aboard the Carnival Venezia while the cruise ship was more than 350 nautical miles off the East Coast on Saturday.

The rescue involved a child with a medical condition and the child's mother. Details about the patient were not disclosed.

In a statement from the 920th Rescue Wing at Patrick Space Force Base, officials said that, within hours of receiving the call for assistance, the 920th Rescue Wing prepared and launched a rescue force consisting of two HH-60G Pave Hawk helicopters, two HC-130J Combat King II aircraft and two teams of combat rescue officers and pararescuemen to fly to the cruise ship. The personnel safely removed the patient from the ship for transport to a medical center.

When the mission commander arrived on location, two HC-130J aircraft circled the airspace to assess the situation and assumed on-scene command. Then, HH-60 helicopters approached the ship to execute the rescue.

Officials said pararescue personnel were hoisted down, and immediately began preparing the patient. Then the patient and his mother were hoisted up into the helicopter, where the boy received medical attention while on route to a hospital.

“Everyone in the wing mobilized with exceptional speed," said Capt. Dylan Gann, a pilot with the 301st Rescue Squadron. "By uniting our efforts, we saved crucial time, delivering life-saving assistance six hours ahead of other response teams. Our collective determination and efficiency ensured the successful rescue and transport of the individual in need.”

Reaching the ship’s remote location required three helicopter air-to-air refuelings. Those refuelings involve connecting a probe from the helicopter to a drogue on the HC-130J aircraft, allowing fuel transfer mid-flight.

Officials said, as part of this mission, the wing assembled an operations center battle staff to coordinate all aspects of the rescue. This included everything from personnel to monitor weather in the rescue zone to flight doctors used to find the right treatment facility for the patient. The information was transmitted to the rescue force while they were on the way to the scene.

They said the mission encompassed more than eight hours, with the patient successfully transferred to a hospital in the United States.

In commenting on the rescue, Lt. Col. John Lowe, 920th Operations Group commander, said: “This is what ready now looks like. These real-world missions are what our countless hours of training have prepared us for. Rescue was able to plan and execute this mission without hesitation. This combined arms team is highly trained in their field while understanding what role they play in the bigger picture and led to the successful completion of the mission."

The Carnival Venezia had been on a 10-day cruise from New York City to the Eastern Caribbean when the medical emergency occurred.

In a statement, Carnival Cruise Line said: "Carnival Venezia's team worked with United States Coast Guard and Air Force officials to adjust its course Saturday so a medical helicopter could rendezvous with the ship when a guest on board needed treatment ashore. The ship then resumed its route to New York, arriving as scheduled Monday morning."

Based at Patrick Space Force Base, the 920th Rescue Wing is Air Force Reserve Command’s only combat search-and-rescue wing. Its primary mission is to plan, lead and conduct military rescue operations and missions to deny adversaries exploitation of isolated personnel.
