Accessible and Inclusive Tourism Award

Falmouth, Cornwall

mylor_sailing_and_powerboat_school-02_c_tracey_boyne.jpg

Accessible boat at Mylor Sailing School

Gold winner: Mylor Sailing and Powerboat School

The folks down in Falmouth have good reason to pop the Champagne with this gold win. Open all year round, this Royal Yachting Association-accredited sailing school encourages engagement in sports by removing as many barriers to sailing and powerboating as possible. The staff at Mylor Sailing and Powerboat School  are fully trained and their fleet – made up of dinghies, keelboats and powerboats – includes a wheelchair-friendly powerboat. On top of that, they’ve even installed a hoist to help less-mobile trainees onto the sailboats.

Silver – Alton Towers Resort: Working with Access Able and the British Disability Forum, this Staffordshire theme park has improved many of its services to make them more accessible than ever. As well as expanding changing space facilities, ride access passes and wheelchair hire, and installing quiet spaces to support those with sensory issues, Alton Towers now offers access to even more of their exhilarating rides.

Bronze – Fleetwood Beach Wheelchairs: Run entirely by volunteers, Fleetwood Beach Wheelchairs help everyone to have access to this gorgeous Lancashire beach. Sitting comfortably in one of their sand-friendly wheelchairs, you’ll be able to paddle in the surf and make memories by the sea. chichester_festival_theatre-03_c_philip_vile.jpg

Exterior of Chichester Theatre

Gold winner: Chichester Festival Theatre

Created by and for the local community, Chichester Festival Theatre  has been making world-class theatre in West Sussex for nearly 60 years. It is renowned for high-quality productions of plays, musicals and new writing, which sees productions regularly transfer to the West End, and its youth theatre is one of the largest in the UK. The theatre is more than worthy of its first-place win because of its efforts to reduce its impact on the environment, which include planting trees for each production and giving audience members the option to carbon-offset their journey, reusing and recycling props and production materials and using LED lighting across front-of-house and backstage.

Silver – Pure Outdoor Ltd:  Gear up for an eco-friendly adventure with Pure Outdoor. Based in the Peak District, this outdoor activity centre offers a wealth of experiences from hillwalking and climbing, to caving and mountain biking, all in the unrivalled natural surroundings of the Hope Valley. Not only do they strive to cause as little environmental impact as possible, but they also donate to social and environmental causes through their Pure Outdoor Foundation Fund.

Bronze – West Bay Discovery Centre:  Discover a treasure trove of stories and activities at this unique attraction in Bridport, Dorset. As well as displays covering the county’s wildlife and heritage, West Bay Discover Centre aims to raise awareness of climate change and its effects on wildlife and natural habitats. The expert skippers will teach you the basics of how all the equipment works, including how to hoist the sails and use them in the wind, before letting you experience being out on the open waters of the Fal Estuary, the third-deepest estuary in the world.

In small, friendly groups or on a one-on-one basis, you’ll learn a range of culinary skills from vegan cooking to perfecting your Sunday roast, butchery and patisserie.]

To round things off, there’s a Marco Pierre White Steakhouse onsite, meaning you don’t have to leave the hotel for top-notch grub.

Bronze – The Langham, London:  The first purpose-built ‘Grand Hotel’ in Europe, The Langham has 380 luxury bedrooms alongside a range of best-in-class restaurants overseen by none other than renowned chef Michel Roux Jr. Tuck into award-winning afternoon tea at Palm Court, sip creative cocktails at Artesian or indulge in a ‘pub luxe’ experience at The Wigmore – they’re all divine.

Large Visitor Attraction of the Year Award

Chester, Cheshire

chester_zoo-01_no_credit.jpg

Rhino next to Chester Zoo sign

Gold winner: Chester Zoo

One of the world’s leading conservation-based charities, Chester Zoo  is the most visited zoo in the UK outside of London, making it more than worthy of this first-place win. A huge team of scientists, animal experts and environmental policy influencers care for 20,000 animals from 500 threatened species, from rhinos to red pandas, all of which you can see at this sprawling site in northwest England. Visit the Sumatran Orangutans in the Monsoon Rainforest, take a Lazy River Boat trip around the Islands and spot the king of the jungle in the Asiatic Lion habitat – all in a day’s visit.

Silver – Bletchley Park:  Once the top-secret home of the World War Two Codebreakers, Bletchley Park is now a world-class heritage attraction and museum. Step back in time as you snoop around restored codebreaking huts and interactive displays to experience the stories of the extraordinary achievements of the men and women who worked here, in the birthplace of modern computing.

Bronze – Pensthorpe Natural Park:  Eleven miles inland from the north Norfolk coast, Pensthorpe is a 700-acre family-friendly nature reserve full of interactive trails, bird hides and boardwalks that weave through the wilderness, allowing you to get closer to over 1,000 species of wildlife. Let the kids loose in the award-winning eco play area and explore the depths of the reserve on a Pensthorpe Explorer tour.

Gwithian, Cornwall

Living area in Three Mile Beach cottage

Gold winner: Three Mile Beach

Three Mile Beach  is a collection of fifteen luxury self-catering beach houses in Gwithian, Cornwall. Here, doing nothing and doing everything live together in harmony. Inspired by laid-back California beach houses, the interiors are sourced directly from local artisans in Cornwall, Morocco, India and Mexico. Not sure what to add to the itinerary? Upgrade your stay with private surf lessons, coasteering or e-bike hire, and have a night off from cooking with a private chef, a visit to the on-site street food area or a pizza night experience.

Silver – Triple A Food Tours:  Tag along on the northeast’s only on-foot food tour . Uncover Newcastle’s independent food scene and try the best local and sustainable produce in the city, all while soaking up local history along the way.

Bronze – Rowley Farm Holidays:  Escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life at a dog-friendly bolthole in the Worcestershire countryside. Gold winner: Black Country Living Museum

A major filming location for BBC’s Peaky Blinders , the immersive Black Country Living Museum  offers an insight into the past with original industrial-era buildings, authentic shops and heritage vehicles, Victorian school lessons and street games, as well as historic characters that bring to life the stories of real people who lived in the Black Country when the region was at the peak of its industrial power. It’s won first place in this category, though, because of how it handled the devastating impact of the pandemic. By opening as a major vaccination hub, developing online educational tools and becoming the first UK museum to join TikTok, this popular museum did all it could to ensure its survival.

Silver – Chester Zoo: Another double winner for 2022, Chester Zoo gets runner-up in this category because of its innovative ‘Save Our Zoo’ campaign which attracted global attention and raised millions in donations and adoptions. On top of that, Virtual Zoo Days meant you could experience the zoo from home and, after re-opening, the Zoo put in place top-notch Covid measures to ensure everyone was as safe as possible. It’s a big thumbs up from us!

Bronze – Severn Valley Railway: Experience the golden age of steam aboard a restored vintage steam train. Running through 16 miles of Worcestershire countryside, the Severn Valley Railway journeys between Kidderminster and Bridgnorth, stopping at exquisitely preserved stations. During the pandemic, the Railway adapted by putting on virtual train tours to thousands of subscribers, operated Covid-secure trips (once they were allowed to) and much more, making them more than deserving of their bronze-place win.

As well as admiring 360-degree views across the Jurassic Coast, you can discover the maze of underground passages, displays detailing the Fort’s military history, guns, ramparts and fun trails to keep the little ones busy. The Fort also has a reputation for being one of the most haunted sites on the south coast, with reports of a ghostly whistling gunner in the passageways.

Silver – Royal Liver Building 360: For the first time ever, you can take guided tours of the West Clocktower of the Grade I-listed Liver Building , which takes pride of place on Liverpool’s waterfront. Awards trophy with gold rose

England’s tourism awards champion the very best of the country’s tourism industry, celebrating quality, innovation and best practice.

The annual awards cycle begins with a series of local competitions, which feed up to the national VisitEngland Awards for Excellence. Businesses complete a single application and local winners are automatically put forward to the national judging panel.

The highlight of each awards cycle is the national VisitEngland Awards for Excellence event where the finest businesses receive the most coveted accolade in English tourism.

In light of current Government guidance and the ongoing disruption we are facing we have taken the difficult decision to cancel this year’s VisitEngland Awards for Excellence Learning Expo and Awards Presentation event, due to take place on 16 June 2020 in Hull.

Whilst we are disappointed to have to cancel the event we feel it is important to recognise those businesses that over the last year delivered amazing experiences for visitors and played a pivotal role in the English tourism industry. This year we will announce and recognise the winners via a virtual presentation and we will provide more information as soon as it is available. We are sure you will understand why we have taken this decision.

We at VisitEngland hope you keep safe and well in these difficult times.

Our venues take home winners' medals in the visit england awards for excellence 2022.

Visit England Awards for Excellence graphic

Visit England’s Awards for Excellence took place last night on Wednesday 8 June at the Birmingham Library, and we were excited to find out who would take home the gold award for the Accessible and Inclusive Tourism category.

The national finalists were selected from hundreds of tourism businesses across England including hotels, self-catering accommodation, B&Bs, glamping operators, attractions, restaurants, pubs and museums, so we were delighted to see there were Euan’s Guide venues as finalists across two categories.

Of course, naturally we were most interested in the results of the Accessible and Inclusive Tourism Award, which recognises tourism businesses providing truly memorable visitor experiences for everyone, particularly those with accessibility requirements, and demonstrating excellence across every aspect of the business.

Gold was awarded to Mylor Sailing and Powerboat School , with runners up Alton Towers Resort taking home silver, and Fleetwood Beach Wheelchairs securing bronze.

Euan’s Guide reviewer @sarahsouthcoast said in her review of one of our most-reviewed venues, Mylor Sailing and Powerboat School: “An amazing afternoon with amazingly kind and patient people. Everyone was very in tune to what my son might need, offering to bring the boat up to allow for his wheelchair to be put onto the boat, speeding up to give my son a safe thrill as well as including his twin sister in everything. It was a lovely couple of hours out on the boat, with many happy memories and photos.”

We don’t currently have any reviews of Alton Towers Resort – any takers?  Submit your review online!  The accessibility pages on their website have lots of information but, of course, we love to hear from you about your own personal experiences.

@Bluefrog111 said of Fleetwood Beach Wheelchairs: “Absolutely fantastic beach wheelchairs for ‘hire’ (there isn’t a charge but they welcome donations). There are quite a few chairs which would suit a range of different needs and are available for adults and children. You collect the chair inside a building, which has a brand new, large mobile hoist… All the volunteers are very friendly and helpful - they seemed to genuinely care and want to help, without being patronising.”

Check or the reviews on Euan's Guide to find out why Fleetwood Beach Wheelchairs and Mylor Sailing and Powerboat School have received 4* and 5* reviews.

Congratulations to all of the winners, and again to Mylor Sailing and Powerboat School in Cornwall who took home a second gold award in the Experience of the Year category!

The full list of winners can be found on Visit England’s website.

The Caravan and Motorhome Club, as well as being the headline sponsor of the national awards this year, is also sponsoring the ‘Experience of the Year’ category. Barclays is announced as sponsor of the ‘Accessible & Inclusive Tourism Award’ and, as announced previously, Sykes Holiday Cottages is sponsoring the ‘Self Catering Accommodation of the Year’ category. The Family Holiday Charity is the chosen charity for this year’s awards event.

Tourism is one of England’s largest and most valuable industries, supporting hundreds of thousands of businesses, employing about 2.6 million people and, in 2019, generating £76 billion in domestic visitor spending.

England's best places to stay, its most excellent eateries and most riveting tourist attractions have been named in the 2022 VisitEngland Awards for Excellence .

The finalists were selected from hundreds of tourism businesses across England including hotels, self-catering accommodation, B&Bs, glamping operators, attractions, restaurants, pubs, and museums. Judges narrowed it down to 19 overall winners, which were announced during an awards ceremony at the Library of Birmingham on June 8, hosted by broadcaster and author Clare Balding.

One of the most coveted awards is always the title of Pub of the Year - and this year the top accolade went to The Cotley Inn, a Somerset pub that ‘welcomes drinkers, muddy boots and wellies just as much as diners visiting for an evening meal, ensuring all guests are made to feel at home’.

The silver medal was snapped up by The Acorn Inn in Dorset – which VisitEngland says is ‘the kind of place you wish you could call your local’ – while The Devonshire Arms at Pilsley in Derbyshire, ‘a village inn with charm by the pint’, came third.

Taste of England Award

From pubs to restaurants, first place in the Taste of England Award went to Lu Ban Restaurant, an establishment that serves ‘cuisine inspired by the Chinese region of Tianjin’ in Liverpool.

'Executive chef Dave J Critchley and his team develop dishes with an inventive, culinary passion, respectful of Chinese food culture and traditions and bringing a new dimension of Chinese cuisine to the city,' VisitEngland says of the award-winner.

Camping, Glamping and Holiday Park of the Year Award

For holidaymakers who crave immersion in the Great Outdoors, the Camping, Glamping and Holiday Park of the Year category celebrated the creme de la creme of England's campsites.

Secret Meadows, a luxury family-run glamping site located in rural Suffolk, reigned supreme. ‘The site is for guests who favour the comforts of glamping, like being "off-grid" and are inspired by the environmental ethos,’ says VisitEngland.

Experience of the Year Award

Which 'experiences' impressed the judges? First place in this award, sponsored by the Caravan and Motorhome Club, went to Mylor Sailing & Powerboat School in Cornwall - which also scooped the top spot in the Accessible & Inclusive Tourism Award.

According to VisitEngland, the school ‘aims to offer fully inclusive sessions for budding sailors, “from absolute beginners to salty seadogs” aged six and above’.

Pure Outdoor, an activity centre in the Peak District National Park, sitting ‘in the heart’ of Derbyshire’s Hope Valley, landed second in the Experience category, while All Hallows' Farmhouse Cookery School in Dorset – which offers guest rooms, a ‘spacious’ school kitchen, gardens and private family accommodation – came third.

VisitEngland Awards for Excellence 2022 puts tourism industry winners centre stage

VisitEngland Awards for Excellence 2022 puts tourism industry winners centre stage

VisitEngland has announced the winners of its annual Awards for Excellence 2022, celebrating the best of the country’s tourism industry.

The 19 Gold Award winners were announced at an evening ceremony on 8 June hosted by broadcaster and author Clare Balding at the Library of Birmingham, in categories ranging from New Tourism Business of the Year to the Ethical, Responsible and Sustainable Tourism Award from the Resilience and Innovation Award to the Unsung Hero Award.

Gold, Silver and Bronze winners were selected from hundreds of tourism businesses across England including hotels, self-catering accommodation, B&Bs, glamping operators, attractions, restaurants, pubs and museums.

The prestigious VisitEngland Awards for Excellence, running for more than 30 years, celebrate and champion innovation, quality and best practice across the industry recognising businesses and individuals who raise the bar of England’s tourism offer.

Tourism Minister Nigel Huddleston said:

“Our superb tourism businesses offer something for everyone and the sector is one we can be proud of. It is fantastic to see so many hardworking businesses of all sizes recognised for their gold-standard contribution to English tourism and I congratulate all the winners.”

VisitEngland Advisory Board Chair Nick de Bois said:

“It is wonderful to see the Awards event back in-person, giving us the opportunity to come together, celebrate and congratulate the best-of-the-best across England’s world-class tourism industry.

“From an accessible and inclusive sailing school to a family run rural glamping site and an immersive living museum, these awards highlight the outstanding quality, the innovation and the customer service excellence across our industry. All these businesses are winners in every sense.

“Millions of jobs and local economies depend on tourism and this year’s awards also highlight the dedication of tourism businesses as they rebuild, championing best practice and providing visitors with first-class experiences.”

Winners were announced in the Awards’ 15 ‘core’ categories as well as for four special awards, including ‘Outstanding Contribution to Tourism Award’, ‘Travel Content Award’, ‘TXGB Trailblazer Award’ and the ‘Tourism Superstar Award’.

The Outstanding Contribution to Tourism Award went to ‘The English Period Drama’ and the film locations used in these shows, in recognition of its valuable role in boosting domestic and inbound tourism to England.

The Tourism Superstar Award, run with the Daily Mirror, was awarded to George Finlay of Matlock Farm Park following a public vote and competition earlier this year.

The Travel Content Award, recognising the media’s important contribution in championing domestic tourism, was won by Ben Lerwill of National Geographic Traveller with his story ‘Pirates and prehistory on Devon’s southeast coast’.

The TXGB Trail Blazer Award went to the Rugby League World Cup 2021, in recognition of the event’s success in driving inbound bookings through the business-to-business platform, also benefitting the domestic market.

The Caravan and Motorhome Club was the headline sponsor of this year’s Awards, also sponsoring the ‘Experience of the Year’ category.  Barclays sponsored the ‘Accessible & Inclusive Tourism Award’ and Sykes Holiday Cottages the ‘Self-Catering Accommodation of the Year’ category. The Family Holiday Charity was the chosen charity for this year’s Awards event.

Tourism is one of England’s largest and most valuable industries, supporting hundreds of thousands of businesses, employing about 2.6 million people and, in 2019, generating £76 billion in domestic visitor spending.

Pete Chambers of Coventry Music Museum, a finalist for Tourism Superstar 2024

VisitEngland’s annual Tourism Superstar competition champions those in the tourism industry who provide an unforgettable visitor experience. The winner is crowned at the end of the competition, based on the highest number of public votes.

From tour guides to wildlife rangers, Tourism Superstars are passionate about the destination they work in and set the bar high for the standard of service in England’s tourism industry.

The winner is decided by public vote from a shortlist of ten finalists usually entered by their employers or destinations.

This year, the winner is Pete Chambers, volunteer director of the Coventry Music Museum .

Meet the 2024 winner!

Congratulations to Pete Chambers, volunteer director of the Coventry Music Museum, winner of Tourism Superstar 2024.

Lifelong music lover and music journalist, Pete Chambers BEM (British Empire Medal) set up The Coventry Music Museum ten years ago to commemorate and honour the music of his beloved home city.

The museum is open four days a week and, as Director and Curator, Pete runs the museum entirely as a volunteer, securing exhibits, running the finances and managing the volunteer team.

His obvious enthusiasm for the museum has ensured local artists have been happy to donate or lend their precious artefacts to the museum, knowing that they will be well cared for and appreciated by Pete. This includes the organ used by Jerry Dammers of The Specials to write the No1 hit “Ghost Town”.

He regularly goes above and beyond for his guests – for example putting together a special package of items on the Coventry band The Primitives for a young fan with autism and to her delight even included an actual Primitives exhibit from the museum.

Over 40,000 guests have visited the museum and Pete has greeted almost every one of them. The museum has been TripAdvisor’s No. 1 attraction to visit in Coventry for a number of years, thanks to the dedication, passion, creativity and generosity of Pete Chambers.

Pete was nominated by Destination Coventry/Coventry & Warwickshire Destination Partnership.

British business excellence celebrated in second year of The King’s Awards for Enterprise

The recipients of this year's King's Awards for Enterprise announced

visit england awards 2022

  • 252 recipients announced in The King’s Awards for Enterprise - the UK’s most prestigious business awards.
  • Five businesses have received awards in two categories this year.

The recipients of The King’s Awards for Enterprise have been announced today [Monday 6 May], celebrating the achievements of UK businesses.

This year, 252 businesses representing every part of the United Kingdom and a diverse range of sectors have been recognised by His Majesty The King as among the best in the country. A total of 257 Awards are made with five companies being recognised with two Awards.

161 businesses were recognised in the International Trade category, 59 for Innovation, 29 for Sustainable Development and 8 for Promoting Opportunity through social mobility.

Businesses like these are central to delivering on one of the Government’s five priorities to grow our economy – from creating new opportunities and supporting people into work through to developing new innovations and exporting the best of Britain around the world.

Minister for Enterprise Kevin Hollinrake said:

I congratulate the recipients of this year’s King’s Awards for Enterprise, who exemplify the talent, innovation, and entrepreneurial spirit of British business. I wish them every success and commend the invaluable contributions they make to communities both at home and overseas, helping to grow the UK economy.

This year’s recipients include:

  • Timpson Group, who have received the award for Promoting Opportunity through social mobility for their work providing training and employment opportunities to marginalised groups
  • Halo Solutions Ltd, producers of lifesaving crowd safety and security software invented by former national counter-terrorism police officer Lloyd Major, who wanted to improve emergency communications, safety and security in venues and public spaces after the Manchester Arena bombing. Halo Solutions have been recognised in the Innovation category of the King’s Awards.

James Timpson OBE, CEO of Timpson Group said:

As a business, we are delighted and honoured to have received the Kings Award, in the category of Promoting Opportunity through social mobility. We have received this award due to being one of the largest employers of ex-offenders, and others who face barriers to employment in the UK. The work that we undertake in the Timpson Foundation enables us to provide prison leavers and other marginalized groups with a second chance, through the offer of employment. By being such an inclusive employer, not only are we able to recruit some amazing people into our business, but we also help to reduce re-offending, which in turn creates fewer victims of crime. Without doubt, none of this would be possible without the support and generosity of spirit of our wonderful colleagues, who embody our culture of kindness and compassion. We are very proud to have been given this award and it reflects all our hard work and dedication to giving people second chances. We hope it inspires others to do the same.

Lloyd Major, CEO of Halo Solutions said:

Halo is in the business of protecting people. Anywhere the public gather, from train stations to football stadiums, festivals to universities and everywhere in-between, it takes great communication and co-ordination of information and resources to keep them safe. The Halo system is the software that connects everything together to enhance public safety and to help protect everyone. It was a huge honour for Halo to also play a role in both the state funeral of Her Majesty and also at the coronation concert for King Charles III.  Winning the King’s Award for Enterprise is a stunning recognition of the hard work we do in this space as a British tech company to bring innovative software to the operational environments that need it most.  We have an amazing team – who along with our amazing clients - are dedicated and committed to protecting the public and keeping them safe in public spaces.

The King’s Awards for Enterprise were previously known as The Queen’s Awards for Enterprise and were renamed last year to reflect His Majesty The King’s desire to continue the legacy of HM Queen Elizabeth II by recognising outstanding UK businesses. The Award programme, now in its 58th year, has awarded over 7,000 companies since its inception in 1965.

This year’s King’s Awards for Enterprise are given for outstanding achievement in:

  • Innovation (59)
  • International trade (161)
  • Sustainable development (29)
  • Promoting opportunity through social mobility (8)

His Majesty’s Lord Lieutenants will be presenting the Awards to businesses locally throughout the year.

Eligible businesses are free to apply for one or more categories. The recipients pass a robust assessment process, judged by experts from industry, academia, the voluntary sector and senior officials in Whitehall.

On that basis, each year, The King’s Awards for Enterprise recipients are recommended by the Prime Minister.

The full list of Awardees across the four categories can be found in the London Gazette: https://www.thegazette.co.uk/awards-and-accreditation/content/kings-awards-for-enterprise-2024
