Best transatlantic cruises for 2023, plus tips and what to expect

Donna Heiderstadt

A transatlantic cruise ranks high on many travelers' bucket lists, especially those who love the camaraderie and adventure of a voyage by ship. Today's roughly 4,000-nautical-mile transatlantic crossing is more akin to the pre-aviation "Grand Tour" enjoyed by wealthy Americans than the immigration journeys many of our European ancestors made from the 17th to early 20th centuries.

Leisurely and luxurious, a one-way sailing offers fine dining, wellness-oriented pampering, enlightening lectures, glamorous nightlife and plenty of time to relax. Transatlantic cruises are also a solution for travelers who prefer not to fly and a tempting option for cruise lovers seeking a longer itinerary at an affordable price.

Is a transatlantic cruise right for everyone? Not necessarily, especially for anyone prone to moderate to severe sea sickness. But for those who love sea days — and many cruisers do — a crossing can offer an uninterrupted "floating resort" experience with the added bonus of delivering you to Europe or returning you home without a cramped transatlantic flight.

Here's everything you need to know about cruising the Atlantic — plus a selection of the best transatlantic cruises you can book in 2023.

Which cruise lines offer transatlantic crossings?

transatlantische cruise 2023

While Cunard Line is most famous for its weekly crossings between Southampton, England and New York City, which sail from April to December on its ocean liner Queen Mary 2, pretty much every major cruise line offers transatlantic crossings. These generally take place in the spring (late March to early May) as ships are repositioned from the Caribbean to Europe and in the fall (September to November) when vessels sail from Europe to the U.S. to begin Canada/New England and Caribbean itineraries.

Also known as repositioning cruises, these sailings are usually longer than a traditional crossing and often include several port calls beyond the city of embarkation and disembarkation. Even better, cruise fares for these itineraries are typically one-third to one-half the price of a cruise of the same length that visits a new port every day. This makes them a great deal for travelers looking to settle into shipboard life rather than just sightsee.

These types of transatlantic/repositioning itineraries are offered by Azamara, Carnival, Celebrity, Disney, Holland America, MSC, Norwegian, Oceania, Regent, Royal Caribbean, Princess, Seabourn, Sea Dream Yacht Club, Silversea, Star Clippers, Windstar, Viking and Virgin.

When is the best time of year for transatlantic cruises?

The best time to take a transatlantic cruise depends on what you're looking for: great weather, smooth seas, the best price or specific ports of call.

Generally speaking, May, June and July are recommended for warmer weather and gentler seas — before the Atlantic hurricane season peaks in August, September and October — although storms can arise any time of the year.

March, April and November, while not ideal due to cooler temperatures that can limit on-deck and poolside enjoyment, are a good option and a terrific value, especially if the ship's route is a southerly one between Florida and the Mediterranean rather than between Northern Europe and New York.

As noted above, the best prices are generally in spring and fall for repositioning cruises. These itineraries may also visit several appealing ports in the Mediterranean or Caribbean as well as call on the Azores, Madeira, Canary Islands, Iceland or Bermuda in the Atlantic.

Related: Why I was wrong about transatlantic cruises

How long does the crossing take?

transatlantische cruise 2023

It varies. The classic nonstop transatlantic itinerary aboard Queen Mary 2 is a seven-night voyage between New York and Southampton (and vice versa). On the other hand, transatlantic repositioning cruises generally range in length from 11 to 21 nights, with an average of 14 nights (seven or eight of them typically sea days).

Will the seas be rough?

It's up to Mother Nature. At times the Atlantic can be smooth sailing, even in spring and fall, and yet unpredictable wind and water current patterns can create rough seas seemingly out of nowhere any time of year.

Captains can generally maneuver around storms — and try to do so whenever possible for the comfort of all onboard. In addition, modern cruise ships are equipped with stabilizers that reduce a ship's rolling motion due to wind or waves.

However, if you're even slightly prone to seasickness, don't throw caution to the wind. You'll be better off on a larger ship (pick a cabin located midship on a lower deck) and be sure to pack medication, patches, bands or whatever works best for you. While it may seem counter-intuitive, having a window or balcony actually helps offset seasickness since it offers fresh air and a horizon view, so opt for an ocean-view or balcony cabin over an inside one.

Which side of the ship is best for a transatlantic crossing?

It honestly doesn't make much difference whether you book a cabin on the port (left) or starboard (right) side of the ship since most daytime views will be of the ocean. If, however, you're departing from a Mediterranean port, say Rome or Barcelona, for a southerly crossing, booking a starboard cabin might offer a view of the Rock of Gibraltar if your ship transits between the Mediterranean and the Atlantic during daylight hours. For a U.S.-to-Europe eastward crossing, you'd want the opposite, a port-side cabin.

Similarly, if your crossing takes you from Northern Europe on a northerly route to the U.S. and you want to be among the first to spot land, perhaps Greenland or Newfoundland, book a starboard cabin. But if you are cruising into New York Harbor just before dawn and want to see the Statue of Liberty from your cabin, you'll need to book on the port side.

More important for an Atlantic crossing location-wise is the deck your cabin is on and whether it is situated forward, midship or aft. In general, the ship's movement as it cruises through any rough seas will feel less severe if your cabin is located midship and is on one of the lower or middle decks versus the top-most decks.

Which ports do transatlantic cruises visit?

transatlantische cruise 2023

Where you embark and disembark will determine your route and the ports you potentially call on. Ships repositioning to or from the Baltic and the British Isles generally take a northerly route and vessels sailing from the Mediterranean cross on a more southerly route, especially if they are repositioning to or from a winter homeport in Florida.

On a northerly crossing, you can expect to embark in a port such as Copenhagen, Rotterdam, Southampton or New York and, depending on the length of the cruise, call on ports in Ireland (Dublin or Cork), Iceland (Reykjavik), Greenland (Qaqortoq or Nuuk), Atlantic Canada (St. John's in Newfoundland or Sydney or Halifax in Nova Scotia) and Bermuda (King's Wharf).

On a southerly crossing between Barcelona or Rome in the Mediterranean and Miami or Fort Lauderdale, typical ports of call include Madeira, Grand Canary or Tenerife in the Canary Islands, Ponta Delgada in the Azores, and one or two islands in the Caribbean, such as St. Maarten or Puerto Rico.

Is it better to book an eastbound or westbound cruise?

Which direction you book really depends on whether you're aboard for the experience or you're using the crossing as a substitute for a flight to get to or return from a European vacation. Just keep in mind a few factors:

Aside from Queen Mary 2 crossings, westbound transatlantic repositioning cruises (from Europe to the U.S.) take place in the fall during the Atlantic hurricane season, although some are scheduled for mid-to-late November when storm formation has generally diminished. Eastbound cruises (from the U.S. to Europe) happen in spring, a season also often known for periods of gray skies and rain.

When considering westbound versus eastbound crossings, factor in the time change. While a transatlantic cruise is a terrific way to avoid the jet lag caused by flying across multiple time zones in a single day, you will be subject to almost daily reminders to reset your clock.

On westbound cruises, you'll have to set your clock back at night, thus gaining an extra hour of sleep on most days. On eastbound cruises, you'll set it ahead an hour and lose an hour of leisure time or sleep.

Another factor to keep in mind is that unless you plan to return home on another transatlantic cruise, you'll also need to book a one-way flight. Before committing to a specific eastbound or westbound itinerary, always check your flight options because one-way tickets can sometimes be more expensive than round-trip fares.

Best transatlantic cruises for 2023

There are dozens of opportunities to cross the Atlantic by cruise ship, but here are some of the best itineraries in the coming year:

Cunard's transatlantic crossing on Queen Mary 2 (April to December 2023)

transatlantische cruise 2023

There's nothing quite like it. Cunard 's weekly transatlantic crossing between New York and Southampton (or vice versa) aboard the 2,691-guest Queen Mary 2 celebrates the grand age of ocean liners. These seven-night voyages are all about the sea, with interludes of culinary enjoyment and evening entertainment designed for travelers who appreciate formality and glamour.

A typical day might include time in the library perusing the largest book collection at sea, an illuminating astronomy lesson in the onboard planetarium and traditional afternoon tea.

The evening lineup generally starts with a multi-course dinner (same table and same waiter nightly) followed by a Broadway-inspired show, an abridged Shakespeare play or even a magic act. The ship is also famous for its Gala Evenings capped off with Champagne sipping and dancing to a live orchestra. Yes, pack those ballgowns and tuxes.

Cruise fares start at $949 per person for an inside cabin and $1,276 per person for a balcony cabin.

Virgin Voyage's 15-night Miami to the Med cruise (April 22–May 7, 2023)

transatlantische cruise 2023

With an onboard ambiance that rivals a youthful beach club, Virgin Voyages ' 2,770-guest Valiant Lady will keep the party going day and night on its 15-night Miami to the Med transatlantic crossing .

The ship's 20 excellent dining venues, cutting-edge entertainment (campy and a bit naughty — think drag queen bingo), impressive lineup of wellness classes (from yoga at sunrise to On-the-Upswing bungee aerobics) and fun activities ('90s boy band dance class anyone?) provide plenty of ways to pass the time.

This sun-seekers itinerary heads from Miami to Virgin's Beach Club at Bimini in the Bahamas, followed by a leisurely eight-day Atlantic crossing and calls on Lisbon, Portugal; Cadiz, Spain; and Palma de Mallorca before guests disembark in Barcelona. A Sea Terrace cabin with a balcony starts at $2,378 per cabin—or less than $1,200 per person.

Disney's 13-night eastbound transatlantic cruise (May 7-20, 2023)

transatlantische cruise 2023

For certain Disney fans—namely childless adult couples and empty nesters — who love the brand's storytelling and Imagineering but who prefer not to share a two-week cruise with hundreds of kids and teens, this 13-night eastbound transatlantic cruise itinerary from Miami to Barcelona aboard the 2,500-guest Disney Dream is a solution. It happens when almost everyone ages 5 to 18 is still in school. Yes, some kids will be on board, but not in overwhelming numbers.

On top of the crossing's seven sea days — when Disney Cruise Line offers all kinds of immersive entertainment, excellent onboard dining and plenty of pool time on this southerly route in spring — the sailing includes six culturally rich ports: Ponta Delgada, Azores; Lisbon, Portugal; and Cadiz, Malaga, Cartagena and Barcelona in Spain.

With fares for verandah staterooms starting at $4,237 for two adults (or about $2,118 per person), that's a brand immersion that's far more affordable than any two-week Disney theme park vacation.

Holland America's 20-day Viking Passage (July 2-22, 2023)

transatlantische cruise 2023

For a northerly transatlantic cruise taking place in summer and visiting 12 ports in six countries — making it a true hybrid of an ocean crossing and traditional cruise — check out Holland America's 20-day Viking Passage aboard 1,964-guest Zuiderdam.

The ship departs from Rotterdam in the Netherlands and visits Norway, Iceland, Greenland and Canada (Labrador, Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia) before calling on Portland, Maine and concluding in Boston. There are only seven sea days and three of those include scenic cruising.

There are, however, a few caveats. Even in July, temperatures will be on the cooler side in most ports and Holland America passengers, especially on longer sailings, tend to be mostly older retirees. For sea days, Zuiderdam has an indoor pool with a retractable roof and onboard programming that includes HAL's BBC Earth in Concert, Billboard Onboard and a lineup of shows on the World Stage with its 270-degree LED screen.

At $2,799 per person for an inside cabin and $5,299 per person for a balcony cabin, fares are on the pricier side, mainly because it's mid-summer and a three-week itinerary.

Celebrity's 14-night Italy, France & Bermuda Trans (Oct. 30–Nov. 13, 2023)

transatlantische cruise 2023

Celebrity Cruises ' transatlantic crossings are timed to seasonal ship repositioning. Its Italy, France & Bermuda Trans sailing offers 14 nights aboard its newest ship, Celebrity Beyond, as that ship switches from its summer homeport in Rome to Fort Lauderdale ahead of the winter Caribbean cruise season.

The sailing features port calls in La Spezia, Italy (for Florence/Pisa); Nice, France; Malaga, Spain; King's Wharf, Bermuda; and Nassau, Bahamas, along with eight sea days.

Accommodating 3,260 guests, Celebrity Beyond is a megaship designed with grown-ups in mind. You'll find multiple hot tubs but no waterslides, as well as contemporary décor, 32 sophisticated food-and-beverage outlets (including Voyages, the first Daniel Boulud restaurant at sea), an indoor Solarium pool and a glittering Grand Plaza housing the line's signature Martini Bar.

Inside cabins start at $1,499 per person and balcony cabins at $2,329 per person.

Viking's 14-day Atlantic Ocean Passage (Nov. 3-16, 2023)

transatlantische cruise 2023

Guests aboard Viking Sea's Spain to West Indies sailing will cross the Atlantic from Barcelona to San Juan, Puerto Rico. The ship will call on the Spanish coastal cities of Valencia and Cadiz, Funchal on the scenic Portuguese island of Madeira, and Phillipsburg on the beach-rimmed Dutch-Caribbean island of St. Martin.

The 930-passenger Viking Sea is an adults-only ship featuring a sleek Scandinavian design. Viking guests can enjoy elevated (and complimentary) dining in eight venues, as well as daily activities that include lectures by guest speakers and resident historians, unlimited access to the thermal suite at the Liv Nordic Spa, a main pool with a retractable roof (plus an aft Infinity Pool and hot tub), and complimentary beer and wine with lunch and dinner.

Better still, the transatlantic cruise fare is almost half that of a typical two-week Viking itinerary, with balcony cabins starting at $3,299 per person.

Princess Cruises' 15-day Tropical Passage (Nov. 10-25, 2023)

transatlantische cruise 2023

To snag a great deal on a Princess cruise and enjoy a southerly November crossing that culminates with a five-day swing through the Caribbean, check out the 15-day Tropical Passage aboard the 3,660-guest Sky Princess.

The sailing begins in London (Southampton) and ends in Fort Lauderdale. In between, the ship will visit Ponta Delgada in the Azores and Antigua, St. Maarten, Puerto Rico and Grand Turk in the Caribbean, with a total of nine days at sea.

Sky Princess, which debuted in 2019, features three pools, a glittering Italian-style Piazza (home to Alfredo's Pizzeria — some of the best pizza at sea), a main dining room with menus that change daily and include delicious Chocolate Journeys desserts, four specialty dining venues (at an extra cost), poolside Movies Under the Stars and original production shows in the Princess Theater.

Inside cabins start at $948 per person; balcony cabins are priced from $1,478 per person.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises' 21-night Rome-to-Miami cruise (Nov. 13–Dec. 4, 2023)

transatlantische cruise 2023

Regent's 21-night Rome to Miami itinerary on the 750-passenger Seven Seas Splendor begins with a low-season jaunt around the Mediterranean and continues with a visit to the scenic Canary Islands. After a five-day Atlantic crossing, the luxury ship calls on a pair of Caribbean islands before reaching Miami.

While not a bargain by any means, this three-week cruise aboard Regent Seven Seas Cruises ' newest ship is an all-inclusive splurge. Business-class airfare, transfers, five-star cuisine and unlimited beverages, gratuities, Wi-Fi and most shore excursions are all included.

The first week takes in the beauty of Rome, Tuscany (from Livorno) and Cinque Terre (from La Spezia). Then it's on to Nice and Toulon in France and Palamos, Palma de Mallorca and Barcelona in Spain. Seven Seas Splendor will call on Lanzarote and Santa Cruz de la Palma in the Canary Islands before heading across the Atlantic to the islands of St. Maarten and Puerto Rico before disembarking passengers in Miami.

All-inclusive fares start at $14,099 per person.

Bottom line

No matter your reason for considering a transatlantic cruise, you're guaranteed to experience the secret magic of sea days, with ample time to relax and unwind. With no land in sight for roughly a week, you can enjoy the ship's amenities without feeling rushed. Make new friends over coffee or a game of bridge, watch movies in your cabin, learn more about the world during lectures by onboard experts or treat yourself to rejuvenating massages and facials in the spa.

Even better, per-night rates are typically lower on crossings than on round-trip, port-intensive cruises, so you can enjoy a longer sailing at a fraction of the usual cost. No matter which transatlantic cruise you deem best for your travel style and interests, it is sure to be a memorable bucket-list trip.

A transatlantic cruise is a voyage that takes you across the Atlantic Ocean. You can sail either eastbound, from Florida to Europe, or westbound, from Europe to Florida. The journey takes between 11 and 16 nights, with several days at sea to relax and enjoy the ship.

What’s the difference between a repositioning cruise and a transatlantic cruise?

A repositioning cruise is a seasonal voyage when a ship makes its way from one cruising area to another, for example, from the Mediterranean at the end of summer to Florida, for the winter Caribbean season. So Celebrity’s transatlantic cruises are in effect repositioning cruises – but not all repositioning cruises cross the Atlantic. Some of our repositioning cruises, for example, sail from the Caribbean to South America, or through the Panama Canal.

When’s the best time to cruise?

Transatlantic cruises with Celebrity take place as the seasons change, so you can either sail eastbound in the spring, or westbound in October and November as the European season winds down. Either is a great time to cruise and enjoy relaxing days on board as your ship sails across the Atlantic.

How long does a transatlantic cruise take?

Celebrity’s transatlantic cruises take from 11 to 16 nights. Some voyages stop at several different ports along the way, which is why they are longer. Typically, though, an 11-night voyage will spend seven days at sea, with stops in the mid-Atlantic Azores islands and Bermuda’s Royal Naval Dockyard. These days at sea are a wonderful opportunity to commune with the ocean and enjoy the many amenities of your Celebrity ship.

Do I need a passport and/or a visa?

Yes, you do need a passport for transatlantic cruises. It is the responsibility of each guest to identify and obtain all required travel documents and have them available at the pier when necessary. Before your cruise, familiarize yourself with the required travel documents you will be asked to provide prior to boarding the ship. You’ll find more information here .

The vast majority of countries visited by European cruises do not require a visa. From 2024, Americans, Canadians, and British citizens will be required to register for the new European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) to enter 30 European countries.

This will be easy to apply for, inexpensive, and is simply a pre-authorization system similar to the ESTA that Europeans need to travel to the U.S. and Canada. Once you have the ETIAS, it will be valid for three years. You should make sure you have at least six months before your passport expires, too.

What itineraries are available?

Celebrity offers a wide choice of transatlantic itineraries. European departure ports include Barcelona, Rome (from Civitavecchia), Lisbon, and Southampton, England. These cruises sail to or from Tampa and Fort Lauderdale.

The shortest cruise is from Southampton to Fort Lauderdale, an 11-night journey with stops in the volcanic Azores, Bermuda, and Nassau in The Bahamas. In the opposite direction, from Fort Lauderdale to Lisbon, you’ll stop at Bermuda, the Azores, and Porto, Portugal.

A longer, 13-night westbound crossing from Barcelona takes you to Valencia, Málaga, and Gibraltar before heading out into the ocean. If you have more time, you could choose a 16-night crossing from Rome to Tampa, which starts off with a leisurely tour of the Mediterranean, visiting Barcelona, Palma de Mallorca, Cartagena, and Málaga, with further stops at Ponta Delgada in the Azores and Nassau.

What onboard activities and entertainment can I expect during sea days?

You’ll find a wonderful choice of activities during the sea days of your transatlantic cruise. Relax by the pool or join a workout class in the Fitness Center. Listen to live music, get competitive at a quiz, or try a wine tasting. Indulge in all the different restaurants on board, which range from poolside made-to-order burgers and salads to delicious sushi, contemporary Italian, and clean cuisine in Blu. Take in the endless ocean views from the Magic Carpet on Edge-series ships, and on Solstice-series ships, lie back on the soft grass of the Lawn Club or challenge friends to a game of croquet.

Elevate your experience at The Retreat® , which gives you suite accommodation and access to a luxurious lounge as well as the fine dining restaurant Luminae at The Retreat.

What should I pack for a transatlantic cruise?

You’ll need clothing appropriate to the season for the ports of call you’ll visit on your transatlantic cruise. For example, pack swimwear and beach outfits for Nassau and Bermuda, and comfortable day wear for sightseeing in Europe in the spring or fall, when the weather is pleasant but not overly hot. Pack walking shoes if you want to explore the Azores, which is a great place for hiking. Binoculars are a good idea for spotting marine life from the ship; the Azores in particular has abundant whales and dolphins.

Throughout the ship, casual resort wear, sundresses, shorts, polos, or button-downs are appropriate, paired with sandals, low heels, and loafers. In main and specialty dining, we ask guests to refrain from wearing swimsuits, see-through cover-ups or robes, bare feet, tank tops, T-shirts, and baseball caps.

Smart Casual attire is required for entry to main dining, specialty dining, and the theater. Smart Casual means you look comfortable yet tasteful in a dress, skirt, long pants, or jeans with a stylish top or button-down. Shorts and flip-flops are not considered Smart Casual.

Each itinerary features at least one to two “formal” nights that we call Evening Chic. Evening Chic means you dress to impress, glamorous and sophisticated in your own way, with a cocktail dress, skirt, slacks, or designer jeans, an elegant dress top, or blazer—some guests even pack a tuxedo or gown for onboard photos.

The daily program, delivered to your stateroom and available at the Guest Relations Desk, will be your guide to the correct attire each evening. If you do not wish to participate in Evening Chic, Smart Casual attire is acceptable for dining and attending the theater.

How do transatlantic cruise prices compare to traditional cruises?

Because they generally feature fewer ports of call, transatlantic cruises can be a chance to enjoy a longer cruise for a great price. This presents the perfect opportunity to upgrade your experience. Book an all Included cruise fare , which means drinks and Wi-Fi are covered. Or choose The Retreat for accommodation in a beautiful suite and access to exclusive dining and lounge spaces.

Transatlantic Cruises

The best of classic sailing.

Experience the golden age of ocean travel on a Transatlantic cruise with Princess®. Get to know the tranquility of the sea, and meet the cultures and stories that lie ashore. Choose from itineraries that take you to the castles of the British Isles, the beaches of the Mediterranean and the fjords of Scandinavia and Russia. Feel the thrill of classic cruising while basking in the comfort of home on a cruise across the Atlantic Ocean.

Transatlantic Cruise Departure Ports

Our departure ports are as iconic as the destinations on each itinerary. Arrive a few days early to your Transatlantic cruise or spend time upon arrival exploring the wonders that lie within these cities.

  • Ft. Lauderdale
  • London (Southampton)

Until it was popularized by the 1992 Olympics, Barcelona was a hidden gem amidst Europe’s diverse landscapes. Now it’s widely recognized for its architectural masterpieces and spirited customs. On European cruises from Barcelona, leave enough time before you depart to visit Park Güell — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — and feel inspired by the colors and unique artistry that lies in the park and throughout the entire city.

Copenhagen boasts equal parts charm and culture. Before you set sail on your European cruise, indulge in thrills at Tivoli Gardens, and ride a bike along Nyhavn’s waterways, passing multi-colored homes on the way. Tour ancient fortresses, like Kronborg Castle, which inspired Shakespeare’s “Hamlet.” Or make a stop to see Copenhagen’s most famous symbol, The Little Mermaid.

Fort Lauderdale has long been known for its white-sand beaches, but has recently become famous for its blossoming art scene — among many other things. Before your Transatlantic cruise, browse galleries on Las Olas Boulevard. Stop for a drink at one of the waterfront cafes. Or ride through the Everglades, a 1.5-million acre UNESCO World Heritage Site, and look for the wildlife that call these lands home.

From double-decker buses and telephone booths to medieval castles and monuments, experience the best of the city and countryside on a European cruise from Southampton. Ride on the London Eye, and watch the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace. Then head west and walk the hallways of Windsor Castle, or travel even further to learn about the mystery of Stonehenge.

The cosmopolitan center of America, New York City, is waiting to be explored. On a Transatlantic cruise with Princess, arrive early to spend the day shopping in SoHo, and then stroll through the Museum of Modern Art. Sail past the Statue of Liberty, walk through Central Park and snap a photo in front of the 238 billboards in Times Square. Or ascend the Empire State building and take in sweeping views of it all from 1,250 feet above.

Italy’s capital city is something of a dream. Grand chapels and stone angels line the roads, whispering secrets of Rome’s past. On a cruise to Europe from Rome, arrive early to toss a coin into Trevi Fountain. Legend has it, you’ll be guaranteed return to The Eternal City. Then walk in the footsteps of Emperors at the Colosseum, and receive a blessing from the Pope at St. Peter’s Square.

Vegas hits the seas

So why should you consider taking a cruise across the Atlantic?

Since cruise lines will use Transatlantic cruises to reposition their ships you can score some amazing deals for the number of days onboard.   Why are transatlantic cruises so cheap?  A few reasons really.  Cruise lines need to move these ships to new locations based on seasonality.  You’re helping them pay for his necessity.  Also, fewer ports of call will mean more sea days, and that saves on port fees.

Another advantage?  These ships are not usually filled to maximum capacity, which is really the biggest reason for such low per day costs.  So you will get more room to yourself in a less crowded environment.

Also, on most Transatlantic cruises you will have fewer children aboard.  Because of the length of most of these trips (typically 12-15 days) it’s difficult for parents to bring children along with them, and many retired cruisers will be on these voyages.  This allows for less crowded pools and an overall calmer (dare I say quieter) environment.

And for the price of some of these cruises, it’s a great alternative to flying when traveling to Europe.  You just need to have some extra time on your hands.  One great positive is that you won’t experience any jet-lag after arriving at your destination since the time changes happen much more slowly compared to flying.

Because you are crossing a vast ocean you should be prepared to sail through more turbulent waters at times, so be prepared with some motion-sickness medication just in case.

If the rocking back and forth motion makes it difficult to sleep you can try sleeping perpendicular to the ship by using the couch.  This will take away the side to side motion that keeps some people awake at night.  It’s not ideal, I know, but it can help in a pinch.

Populaire havens Transatlantisch

In a single night, self-driving startup Cruise went from sizzling startup to cautionary tale. Here’s what really happened—and how GM is scrambling to save its $10B bet

Photo illustration of Cruise co-founder Kyle Vogt, GM CEO Mary Barra, and a cruise car.

October 2 was a quiet night on the streets of San Francisco. It was moderately cloudy, and Fleet Week activities had just begun at Sunset Library. But in the Tenderloin neighborhood, at 9:29 p.m., a pedestrian stepped out into the street, crossing Fifth and Market, and was struck by a green Nissan Sentra sedan. What happened next would ripple all the way through one of the largest corporations on earth—GM.

Because after the woman was struck the first time, “Panini”—one of the self-driving robo-taxis in Cruise’s fleet that had been out on the streets for about a year and a half—ran over her, stopped, and then dragged the woman for 20 feet as it tried to pull over.

Within seconds of the initial impact, Cruise’s control room in Scottsdale, Ariz.—where hourly agents monitored Cruise’s fleet 24 hours a day in cubicles fitted with three computer screens—was looped in. By the time a live three-second video of the incident transmitted onto the computer screens in front of Cruise’s remote assistance agents, the car had already incorrectly labeled the incident as a side collision and begun to pull over, unaware it was dragging a person beneath its wheels.

An exhaustive internal investigation reconstructed nearly every detail of the accident, but it couldn’t clear up exactly what Cruise’s remote assistance team saw that evening. One thing is certain: The incident, while not fatal, was the most serious in Cruise’s history, and it immediately thrust the robo-taxi company and its 80% owner, General Motors , into a spiral of federal scrutiny and investigations as well as public outrage and condemnation.

Before the end of October 2023, regulators were alleging that Cruise had withheld important details of the incident from them. California’s Department of Motor Vehicles had rescinded Cruise’s operational permit, leading Cruise to voluntarily pull its vehicles off the streets across the U.S. GM—which had largely let the company run independently, despite its close communication with senior leadership and operations—swept in to replace nearly all of Cruise’s management, shuffle up its board, and lay off nearly a quarter of its almost 4,000 employees in a bid to salvage Cruise’s reputation and preserve the more than $10 billion that GM has plowed into the company over the last eight years.

Cruise—once a crown jewel of General Motors CEO and Cruise Chair Mary Barra’s broader strategy to rival electric competitor Tesla—suddenly had become an outsize liability, just as General Motors was simultaneously trying to manage the six-week union strike by workers of the Big Three U.S. automakers that was threatening its business. Those labor strikes were unprecedented, but the revelations around Cruise’s back-and-forth with regulators were also unnerving GM shareholders. As a financial analyst put it during GM’s first earnings call that mentioned Cruise’s permit being revoked, the company’s handling of the whole debacle was very “un-GM-like.” “I agree with you,” Barra responded. “It was uncharacteristic, and it definitely is something that we’re working to manage well.”

But unlike a startup that implodes and then closes its doors, GM is unfurling the full force of a Fortune 500 giant to resuscitate the project. Whereas GM had previously taken more of a backseat approach with Cruise, it is now intimately hands-on in its subsidiary’s day-to-day—and in the sensitive task of rolling Cruise robo-taxis back onto the streets. To report this story, Fortune spoke with 11 former Cruise employees or contract workers, in addition to Cruise investors, analysts, and San Francisco politicians. Fortune also interviewed Cruise’s newly appointed chief safety officer, Steve Kenner. What is clear? The moves GM and Cruise’s new leadership team make next will be a roadmap of how a giant corporation can rescue an innovative startup—or be driven off course trying to save it.

‘I can’t stop smiling’

Two years ago, General Motors CEO Mary Barra, sporting a black leather jacket, peered into the window of a white and orange Chevy Bolt that was pulling up to the curb to pick her up—no driver in sight.

“Oh, my gosh. This is incredible,” Barra said after sliding into the back seat of the Cruise robo-taxi, known by Cruise staffers as “Tostada.” Barra was sitting next to Kyle Vogt, cofounder of Cruise and its then president and chief technology officer. “It’s too bad that we have to wear masks, though, because I can’t stop smiling,” Barra said.

The video, which Barra posted on her LinkedIn two years ago, showed her taking her first Cruise ride, though she had already been talking up its technology for years—ever since General Motors scooped up a majority of the startup’s shares in March 2016, and two years later when she became chair of its board. The acquisition, which was for a combination of cash and GM equity, put the fledgling company at $1 billion when it was still just three years old, cemented Vogt as a two-time billion-dollar exit founder—and made him and Cruise cofounder Dan Kan the youngest-ever senior directors at General Motors.

Vogt, who had built his first self-driving car prototype at the age of 13 , had a small team of just 40 engineers when GM pulled it into the fold, but it quickly became an outsize piece of GM’s strategy as it experimented with rideshare and autonomy. GM had already made a strategic investment in Lyft , and in early 2016, it had launched its own car-sharing program called Maven, though it would shut that down during the pandemic.

Importantly, Cruise would become an integral piece of GM’s broader big-vision strategy to go 100% electric by 2035. Elon Musk’s Tesla had left legacy carmakers like General Motors in the dust. While General Motors had been working on manufacturing EVs since the 1990s, GM had struggled to manufacture electric vehicles en masse, and in 2022, had to recall many of its Chevy Bolt EVs over fire risks. Even if President Biden was publicly trying to give General Motors most of the credit for the EV revolution, it was Tesla that was successfully putting millions of cars on the streets—and it was being rewarded by investors accordingly.

Cruise’s promise of self-driving vehicles was the kind of shiny new technology that could give General Motors an edge and differentiate it in the market—and maybe even make the legacy automaker “cool.” GM plowed $592 million into the company in 2017, doubling its staff within the first year of GM’s acquisition. Within eight years, Cruise had scaled to nearly 4,000 employees (plus a host of contract workers) across San Francisco, Seattle, Phoenix, Austin, Dubai, and in Japan. In 2022, Cruise beat Tesla and Alphabet's Waymo to commercial operation, becoming the first company to launch a fared robo-taxi service in San Francisco that February. Cruise welcomed strategic investors like Honda and Microsoft . It was building out a driverless last-mile delivery service with Walmart in Phoenix and had 70 of its robo-taxis on the road in San Francisco by the end of 2022.

“We are the first company that has actually deployed an autonomous rideshare company service in San Francisco,” Barra told Fortune of Cruise in an interview in August 2022. “We're actually charging for rides and there is no driver… So I'm very excited about where our technology is. So that's huge.”

About a year before Barra took that first ride, there was an executive shuffle within Cruise. GM veteran Dan Ammann, who had once rivaled Barra for the top seat at GM and had been chief executive at Cruise since 2019, was replaced by Vogt, and he left the company at the end of 2021. Ammann and Barra had sparred over when Cruise should go public, which was first reported by Bloomberg and independently confirmed by Fortune . (Ammann didn't respond to Fortune 's request for comment.)

Within two months after Ammann left the company, Cruise was rolling its cars onto the road in San Francisco, leading to internal clashes among some of its own employees, who debated whether the technology was accurate enough to roll out en masse. These clashes would only heighten in 2023 when the company started scaling at a rapid clip.

“These vehicles were not ready. And we would say as much,” one of the former employees says, noting that they believed that the number of “unwanted public interactions”—or UPIs—on the company’s internal database, called RINO, were too high. The former employee described instances of vehicles freezing in the middle of a four-way stop or stopping when an emergency vehicle would go past, and said that the robo-taxis couldn’t see objects that were too close to the ground—recalling staffers joking about how a Cruise might run over Mayor London Breed’s cat, because the robo-taxi wouldn’t be able to detect it. “I believe that we were getting close—I just think that we tried it a little bit too early when there were things that were unsafe,” another former employee says, noting how isolated vehicle responses, such as a Cruise not stopping quickly enough at a stop sign, were akin to “if a computer had a learner's permit.”

transatlantische cruise 2023

There was a notable shift at Cruise particularly in 2023, when Vogt became laser-focused on scale, according to people who worked there at the time. One person says that the company set an internal goal to reach $150 million in annual revenue by the end of the year. “Deployment decisions were basically being made on the fly at night by [Kyle Vogt],” that person asserts. (Vogt declined to comment for this story.)

But the subject of readiness was contested internally—particularly when Cruise was first launching service, and only had a few vehicles on the road. A former employee said the vehicles were “thoroughly tested” when they were first debuted for commercial service in 2022 in San Francisco. They described the lengthy process that led up to the rollout: running billions of miles of simulations in what was called “the matrix,” testing on private road systems, and tens of thousands of miles with human drivers—all of which preceded the rollout. After the cars were rolled out in 2022, small issues would lead to a reduction in fleet size or trigger a full fleet stoppage, they said.

But as more and more cars were introduced to the streets, Cruise was often at odds with the public in San Francisco, who didn’t seem quite ready for the new technology to be on the streets. People would mess with the cars—putting traffic cones on top of the vehicles so the robo-taxis would pull over, or throwing rocks at the windshields. One remote-assistance operator recalled a man pulling down his pants and sitting his naked bottom on the hood of the robo-taxi while she was trying to move the vehicle. “A lot of people didn't want Cruise to exist and would make a joke out of it,” a former employee says. Another former employee recalled people slashing Cruise tires and a man who repeatedly chased the cars with a hatchet, sometimes when passengers were inside.

And Cruise’s relationship with regulators was at times contentious. The city and county of San Francisco were repeatedly laying out complaints about driverless Cruise cars sitting disabled and blocking traffic, signaling in one direction yet moving in another, or blocking transit vehicles . In summer 2023, head of the SFMTA Jeff Tumlin went on a podcast, berating companies like Cruise and Waymo and making statements about the data they shared with regulators that were inaccurate. (The podcast ultimately issued a factual correction around some of Tumlin’s statements about how AV companies were engaging with his agency.)

There was an “us versus them” mentality that ran through the fabric of the organization, according to the internal investigation after the October incident, which was made public earlier this year, and accounts from former employees. Two former employees said senior leadership was resistant to working with San Francisco law enforcement and regulators.

That attitude extended to the media. Employees expressed frustration at the frequent negative media coverage or political jabs lodged at Cruise, and said some staffers took it personally.

“Kyle was very passionate about what we do here at Cruise,” one of the former employees says. “He would talk all the time, at length, of drunk-driving accidents and the amount of people who are killed every single year. He mentioned [that in] almost every single company stand-up meeting that we had—just to try and drive the point home that we can make a safer world by what we do here.”

‘It was hard to watch’

For San Franciscans trying out the new Cruise robo-taxi service for the first time, the whole process could feel futuristic. A user pulls up the app, orders a Cruise car with a clever name—like “Poppy”—and it pulls up to the curb. After you get in, a tablet in the back instructs you to shut the doors; then Poppy takes you on your way.

Powering all of it was a lot of hidden manpower to make sure the vehicles stayed out of trouble. That’s where the staff in Scottsdale came in. When the fleet was operational, that office housed Cruise’s operations center, with a customer service team, an incident and crisis management team, and roadside dispatch.

One of the rooms is a 24/7 control room, where remote assistance workers worked 10 hours a day, four days a week, monitoring both the autonomous fleet—suggesting routes for the taxis when they got stuck or didn’t know how to proceed—and the vehicles that were being operated with drivers. If a driver took their hands off the steering wheel, or started blinking too slowly (indicating tiredness), the remote assistance workers would alert their supervisors.

The mood in the control room was generally lighthearted, two former agents say. In true Silicon Valley startup fashion, Cruise’s office offered free meals to its employees—with chips, energy drinks, oatmeal, and candy for them to snack on from two kitchens during their shifts. Managers would crack jokes. “I thought it was fun,” one of them says. “Everybody was nice. Everyone was wanting to help you.”

But the evening of Oct. 2, after the pedestrian was struck by a Cruise vehicle, the aura in the control room shifted markedly. No formal announcement about the crash was made within the control room, according to the agent present, though a longer, 14-second video of the accident was shared with some of the people present via Slack, or shown directly—alerting others to what had taken place, they said.

One of the agents working that evening, who spoke with Fortune on condition of anonymity, left the control room for a period after being shown the footage. “I just took a walk—just to get my mind off of it—because it was hard to watch,” they said. (Cruise says that all RA employees involved in the response “were given the opportunity to go home to cope with the experience.”)

That evening, Cruise team members jumped into crisis management mode, paging employees who needed to be looped in, and creating a virtual “war room” on Google Meet and a corresponding Slack channel to communicate about and deal with the incident. Meanwhile, employees went back and forth with the NHTSA, the San Francisco MTA, the San Francisco Police Department, and the San Francisco Fire Department about the incident and set up meetings for the following day. Cruise was fielding inquiries from the press and was solely focused on trying to correct the record to reflect that the pedestrian had initially been struck by a separate vehicle in a hit-and-run—not by Panini.

Employees didn’t know the extent of the robo-taxi’s responsibility in the accident—that the vehicle had subsequently dragged the pedestrian 20 feet after she was struck by the other vehicle—until the early morning of Oct. 3, when the complete footage from the car had been uploaded to Cruise servers and reviewed. At that point, employees realized the incident was much more serious than they had understood, and some 200 people at the company were pulled into the virtual war room.

But Vogt and Cruise’s vice president of communications, Aaron McLear, decided not to alter Cruise’s press statement to include that Panini had dragged the pedestrian, nor to share the full footage with reporters. “[W]e did share all the info with all of our regulators and the investigators. We have no obligation to share anything with the press,” McLear wrote in a Slack message, according to Cruise’s subsequent third-party investigation of the incident which GM made public earlier this year. (McLear declined to comment.)

In meetings with regulators on Oct. 3, Cruise employees didn’t proactively discuss how the robo-taxi had dragged the pedestrian—instead relying on playing a full video of the incident, which showed the dragging, to speak for itself. And there were internet issues in all but one of the meetings with regulators—limiting what exactly officials saw and creating a disconnect in what regulators took away from the meetings, the investigation showed.

Adding to what had already been such a difficult week for the company and many of its employees, one of Cruise’s incident analysts had suddenly passed away a few days before the pedestrian accident, leading Cruise to bring in counselors and offer time off to the employees who were close to him. Around that same time, one of Cruise’s contract drivers, who was manually driving a robo-taxi in one of the new cities, was T-boned by a speeding driver and hospitalized with significant injuries. “That was a crazy week at Cruise—I’m not going to lie,” says someone who worked in the Scottsdale operations center.

Meanwhile, Vogt was pressing for things to return to normal, according to the investigation that followed the incident. When members of the safety and engineering teams asked whether the fleet should be grounded, Vogt and Cruise COO Gil West said the data didn't justify a shutdown, the report says. And to the concern of several Cruise staffers, Vogt and West determined to close the “war room” by 6:05 p.m. the day after the incident. Employees "expressed concern that there were no further scheduled [crisis management team] meetings for the biggest accident Cruise had faced in its history," the report says. People were “livid,” an employee says.

"It was uncharacteristic, and it definitely is something that we're working to manage well." Mary Barra, CEO of General Motors and chair of Cruise's board of directors

On Oct. 6, an article ran in Forbes in which San Francisco Supervisor Aaron Peskin accused Cruise of “telling a half truth,” and not disclosing that the robo-taxi had dragged the pedestrian 20 feet. Four days later, the DMV asked for a complete video of the accident, and a couple days after, the NHTSA told Cruise it intended to open a “preliminary evaluation” into the accident as well as three other incidents involving pedestrians in San Francisco.

On Oct. 24, the DMV suspended Cruise’s driverless permit, noting in a release that the department believed Cruise vehicles were “not safe for the public’s operation” and that the company had “misrepresented any information related to safety of the autonomous technology of its vehicles.” The DMV rescinded Cruise’s permit the very same day that Barra had earlier underscored Cruise’s expansion plans on an earnings call with analysts. Shortly after, Cruise voluntarily pulled its entire fleet off the streets across the U.S., including its human-driven cars. Vogt resigned, and cofounder Dan Kan, the chief product officer, resigned a day later.

The company brought in Quinn Emanuel to investigate the incident; the legal firm determined that Cruise had suffered from “poor leadership, mistakes in judgment, lack of coordination, an ‘us versus them’ mentality with regulators, and a fundamental misapprehension of Cruise’s obligations of accountability and transparency to the government and the public.” After the findings, Cruise parted ways with nine employees and senior leaders, and completely cleaned house, bringing on a slew of new executives.

But even after Quinn Emanuel’s 105-page report, questions remain about what exactly happened that night. Two operators were interviewed about a week after the incident and asked to share their recollection of events, according to Cruise’s subsequent investigation. But they had been laid off by the time Quinn Emanuel sought to interview them, and the investigators had to rely on a Cruise staffer’s “contemporaneous notes.” Another two interviewees provided information the law firm couldn’t verify that “appears contrary to the weight of the evidence,” the report said. The agent working that evening who spoke to Fortune , who was laid off in November, said no one at Cruise had ever reached out to them about the incident. "There's a lot of stuff lost now that people will never know," another former employee says.

A representative from Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital, where the pedestrian was taken in critical condition, said that the pedestrian had been discharged, but declined to share any further information. The San Francisco Police Department said its investigation into the incident is still ongoing.

Cruise settled with the woman who was dragged at a figure between $8 million to $12 million, Fortune reported earlier this week. The company has also proposed a fine of $112,500 as part of a settlement with the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC), which had accused the company of omitting material facts to the regulator.

transatlantische cruise 2023

After October 2

GM has always been close to Cruise’s operations. GM controls the Cruise board: Of its seven seats, four are GM executives and three also sit on GM’s board. And particularly after Ammann’s departure, GM’s relationship with Cruise’s senior leadership became more closely intertwined, according to two people familiar with the matter. GM executives Regina Carto, who leads global product safety, and Frank Gorman, GM’s assistant general counsel, had regularly scheduled meetings with several of Cruise’s senior leaders, one person with knowledge of the matters says. Meanwhile, Cruise’s AV technicians were regularly in touch with GM engineers to handle issues or updates with the Chevy Bolt. Cruise Origins, the spacious, vanlike vehicles without driver’s seats, steering wheels, or pedals, would be tested at GM’s headquarters in Detroit, as well as one of its test tracks outside of San Francisco. Cruise frequently provided mileage reports to the board and other senior managers within GM, and it would report all major incidents, including how they were handled and how Cruise planned to improve its response moving forward. “Someone had some form of daily contact [with GM] on some level,” one former employee says.

Two people specifically describe sensing an "undertone" within the company that GM was monitoring them. "There was a constant undertone that GM was watching. GM expects us to produce. We have to get on the road. Waymo is better than us,” one of them says, referring to Alphabet's rival self-driving cars.

Still, Cruise had other investors, and GM had left it to operate independently, trusting its senior executive team to handle day-to-day operations, including its interactions with regulatory agencies, legal affairs, and communications.

After the incident, when GM shares dipped below $30 per share for the first time in three years, all of that would change. While Cruise EVP Mo Elshenawy was promoted to be the company’s co-president and CTO, board member Glidden stepped in as co-president and chief administrative officer, and GM became acutely involved in investigating the October incident, restructuring the company and who was running it, and overseeing its interactions with the media. For example, GM’s chief communication officer and other senior GM leaders started to sometimes sit in on Cruise board meetings, according to someone familiar with the matter. GM board member Jon McNeill, who was Lyft’s former COO, stepped onto Cruise's board, and Mike Abbott, GM’s executive vice president of software and services, took an observer seat. GM’s president, Mark Reuss, personally interviewed Steve Kenner, previously the global director of automotive safety at Ford who was hired as Cruise’s Chief Safety Officer earlier this year. Glidden, who is GM's executive vice president of legal, has been representing the company in its ongoing regulatory inquiries (his base salary rose to $1.1 million, up from $850,000, as a result, SEC filings show).

In the weeks after the DMV’s suspension, Cruise employees were anxious—particularly after Vogt resigned. “[We] started to see the writing on the wall,” one of the employees says, referring to discussions of potential layoffs. “A lot of people just were really nervous.”

With cars pulled from the roads in all markets, some staffers who worked directly with the fleet had little to do. Testing was moved into garages and onto test tracks. In the control room, remote assistance workers didn’t have cars to monitor, so they were asked to review and label thousands of video clips during their shifts.

Right up to the DMV’s suspension of Cruise’s permit, Cruise had been on a fast track to scale. The robo-taxi company had publicly announced plans to get to $1 billion in revenue by 2025. It was already providing limited service in Phoenix, Austin, Houston, Dallas, and Miami—and it was working on building out operations in Nashville, as well as overseas in Japan and in Dubai. Out in Phoenix, Cruise had been expanding the range of self-driving shopping delivery that it was doing with Walmart.

A handful of Cruise Origins had been transported to Cruise’s R&D facility and track in Phoenix, where employees had been training with them. “We were just starting to get acquainted and integrated with the Origins,” says a former Cruise employee who was working with the vehicles.

Immediately, all of those plans were put on hold. With autonomous vehicles off the roads, Walmart deliveries in Phoenix reverted to human drivers, then eventually stopped altogether. During a layoff in 2023, General Motors ultimately let go of 24% of Cruise’s employees—or around 900 people—and later parted ways with many of its contractors.

"The leaders involved exercised very poor judgment in how they conducted themselves and interacted with the regulators." Steve Kenner, chief safety officer of Cruise

Approximately seven months since the incident, General Motors is just starting to lay the groundwork to relaunch. Cruise said earlier this week that it will start testing its self-driving vehicles in Phoenix—operating autonomously, but with human drivers inside the vehicles to take over if needed. At the beginning of last month, Cruise submitted responses to the California DMV to reinstate its permit, though the DMV told Fortune those are still under review. As it relaunches service, Cruise plans to re-map each city where it will operate, slowly release commercial rides with human supervision, and then eventually move to autonomous rides, according to chief safety officer Kenner.

Kenner is unsparing about Cruise’s previous management. “The leaders involved exercised very poor judgment in how they conducted themselves and interacted with the regulators,” he tells Fortune . Since Kenner’s arrival, Cruise has restructured its operations around its safety team, so that Kenner has veto power before Cruise makes any kind of incremental rollout—even if it’s putting manually driven cars on the street. He has also told regulators that GM and Cruise will work together with them on safety issues. That’s already playing out in many of the meetings: All of Kenner’s meetings thus far with the NHTSA, which still has two investigations open into Cruise, have included GM’s head of product safety, Regina Carto, too. “She and I have been talking a lot—almost on a daily basis, including just finishing up [a call] about a half-hour ago,” Kenner said in the interview.

Kenner has been traveling between Phoenix, Houston, Dallas, Austin, San Francisco, and Washington, D.C., meeting with regulators and transportation officials and trying to rebuild the company’s relationships. “I know trust is earned, and we're going to be judged by our actions going forward,” Kenner said. “It's going to take some time."

But even as Cruise robo-taxis start driving the roads again, it will be a different company than before. For one, employees are no longer awarded restricted stock units, just cash—making Cruise’s compensation plan more akin to that of a corporation than a Silicon Valley startup. (GM offered to buy shares at around $11–$12 per share earlier this year, according to a former employee, down from around $25 per share at the end of last year. Reuters reported similar details in February.)

GM has also slashed Cruise’s annual budget by $1 billion and has made it clear that it will pull back the pace. As of now, Cruise is keeping its Origin vehicles off the streets.

Cruise’s new, slower pace will make it more akin to Waymo, which had driven its vehicles 20 million miles with drivers before it started putting its cars onto the roads fully autonomously. That’s something former Cruise employees who were concerned the company was moving too fast think is a good thing. “They're trying to implement some new safety initiatives, which is great. It’s very good to see,” one of them says.

Cruise employees are quick to point to the data we have so far on self-driving vehicles, which both Waymo and Cruise have published, and which has been closely analyzed . The initial figures suggest that self-driving cars are much safer than their human counterparts. But new technology, it seems, is always going to be held to a much higher standard when it comes to safety.

“We all see the potential benefits and value of autonomous vehicles, including safety, but we need to make sure these powerful new technologies are ready for prime time,” says San Francisco City Attorney David Chiu, who through a lawsuit in December has sought to restrict the number of robo-taxis operating in San Francisco. Chiu describes himself as a supporter of self-driving cars—so long as they are safe: “Unfortunately the many events over the past year have suggested otherwise, so this is why we have been pushing for accountability, transparency, and guardrails.”

‘In the wilds of San Francisco’

Part of Cruise’s original allure, executives repeatedly told shareholders, was that Cruise could recruit different talent than GM, and had an ideal lab on the streets of San Francisco. “What really attracted us to Cruise was not only the capability that they had already developed, but the fact they were doing it, I call it, in the wilds of San Francisco, right? Literally on the downtown streets of San Francisco, the most—or one of the most—complex environments to try to build and deploy new technology,” Pamela Fletcher, GM’s former vice president of electric vehicles, said at the Citigroup Global Technology Conference in late 2016.

Billions of dollars later, Cruise has lost much of what gave it that edge. It can no longer operate in the “wilds of San Francisco”—at least for now. And it’s no longer very independent from GM. Moreover, Cruise’s first-mover advantage has been erased. “When you're standing still, and Waymo’s moving forward—it's a big difference,” says David Whiston, an automotive analyst at Morningstar.

When GE placed its bet on Cruise, it was hoping for all the glory that comes with getting in early on a lightning-hot startup unconstrained by bureaucracy and tradition. But it’s easy to forget the second part of the old startup mantra: “Move fast and break things.” And in this case, a single misstep on a dark San Francisco street didn’t just put Cruise’s reputation on the line—it imperiled GM’s too. Now the 100-year-old company is in a position it never wanted to be in: It has to move fast—and fix things.

Ethan Hunt’s story is far from over. Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part 1 has arrived, taking Hunt and his badass team on yet another world-saving adventure. Directed by Christopher McQuarrie and starring Tom Cruise as the unparalleled international spy Ethan Hunt , the new film pushes the limits of all the new and returning characters across the board. Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part 1 presents another epic action story that's a worthy addition to the blockbuster franchise. Read on for all the details you need about Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning before you watch it, including its release dates, cast, characters, filming details, and more.

Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning

Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part 1 arrived in US theaters on July 12, 2023 (previously scheduled for July 14). Dolby Cinema, IMAX, and other premium large formats hosted early access screenings for the film on July 10, 2023, at 7:00 pm. Tickets went on sale on June 14, and those who bought a ticket were also able to see special bonus content exclusively at the event, as well as receive limited edition collectibles, including a poster and an IMF enamel pin. The movie was originally scheduled to premiere on July 23, 2021. Subsequent delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic pushed the date, first to November 19, then May 27, 2022, then to September 30, 2022, then July 14, and finally to its current date.

Not at the moment, no. The film will be made available to stream on Paramount+ sometime after the film's theatrical debut. Unlike some of Paramount's biggest 2022 releases such as Smile , The Lost City , and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 , Tom Cruise's last film, Top Gun: Maverick waited 209 days after its theatrical release before it finally premiered on Paramount+, and the seventh Mission: Impossible film will likely be no different, so the new film likely won't be on Paramount+ until early 2024.

Tom Cruise headlines the cast, reprising his lead role as Ethan Hunt. Besides Cruise, Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part 1 also sees the return of Ving Rhames as Luther Stickell, Henry Czerny as Eugene Kittridge, Simon Pegg as Benji Dunn, Rebecca Ferguson as Ilsa Faust, Vanessa Kirby as Alanna Mitsopolis, and Frederick Schmidt as Zola Mitsopolis, all of whom will be back in their old roles from the previous films. Hayley Atwell ( Captain America: The First Avenger ) is playing a character called Grace. According to Christopher McQuarrie, Grace is a "destructive force of nature". Atwell has also described Grace's loyalties as "somewhat ambiguous".

“The interesting thing we're exploring is her resistance to a situation she finds herself in,” Atwell told the Light the Fuse podcast. “How she starts off, where she becomes. The journey of what she comes into and what is asked of her and potentially where she ends up.”

Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part 1 also has another connection to the first movie. Henry Czerny returns as Eugene Kittridge, the former director of the IMF who last appeared in the 1996 Mission: Impossible . The film's primary villain is played by Esai Morales ( Ozark ). Nicholas Hoult ( Renfield ) was originally set to play the role, but he was reportedly forced to drop out due to scheduling conflicts. Pom Klementieff ( Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 ) plays another one of the film's villains, an assassin and the right-hand woman of Morale's character. McQuarrie praised Klementieff's performance in the movie saying in an interview:

“I dare you to go to this movie and try not to look at Pom. More than any other actor I’ve worked with, you cannot take your eyes off her. She’s completely compelling, completely dynamic. It was quite amazing. It changed the way I designed shots, it changed the way I wrote scenes, it changed the way we dressed the character. It’s just raw, raw power that’s unrecognisable from Mantis in Guardians.”

Shea Whigham ( Boardwalk Empire ) plays Jasper Briggs, a man who is attempting to track down Hunt and his team. Additional cast members include Greg Tarzan Davis ( Top Gun: Maverick ), Charles Parnell ( Top Gun: Maverick ), Rob Delaney ( Deadpool 2 ), Cary Elwes ( The Princess Bride ), Indira Varma ( Obi-Wan Kenobi ), Mark Gatiss ( Sherlock ), and Mariela Garriga ( Bloodline ). Angela Bassett was expected to reprise her role as CIA director Erika Sloane from Fallout . However, the actress confirmed to Collider in July 2021 that she couldn’t be in the movie due to conflicts caused by COVID-19.

The first official trailer for Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part 1 hit the web on May 23, 2022, 14 months ahead of the film's release date and timed to the release of another Tom Cruise blockbuster, Top Gun: Maverick . The trailer gives fans their first real good look at all the high-octane stunts, action set-pieces, and new destinations along with the new characters played by Hayley Atwell, Pom Klementieff, and Esai Morales. Best of all the trailer shows off Rebecca Ferguson's Ilsa Faust brandishing a sword in one scene and sporting an eyepatch in another. Additionally, 20 minutes of footage from the movie was screened at CinemaCon 2023. While that won't be made available to the public, here's the link to a description of the action-packed footage .

The full trailer was released by Paramount almost an entire year after the teaser trailer.

A 30-second TV spot for the film aired on June 1, 2023, during the NBA Finals. And on June 29, we also got a new behind-the-scenes video showing Tom Cruise once again doing some death-defying stunts. This time, the action star does speedflying . To know what that is, here's the video:

Filming on Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part 1 was scheduled to begin under the working title “Libra” on February 20, 2020, in Venice. The movie was supposed to be filmed in Venice for three weeks before moving to Rome for 40 days. However, production was halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic breaking out in Italy. In July 2020, the UK gave permission for the crew to begin filming without going through the mandatory 14-day quarantine. Similar permission was granted for filming in Norway soon after that.

Filming began in earnest on September 6, 2020 . McQuarrie revealed the start of filming with posts on his Instagram profile . Production was halted in Italy again in October 2020 after 12 people tested positive for COVID-19 on set. This time, filming was resumed just one week later. In February 2021, production in the Middle East was concluded. On April 20, 2021, filming commenced in the small village of Levisham, North Yorkshire, UK, for a train wreck scene. Filming was paused again for 14 days in June 2021 after a member of the production reportedly tested positive for COVID-19. In August 2021, the crew began filming in Birmingham's Grand Central Station. Production was reported to have wrapped in early September 2021 but presumably, some more filming was involved as the latest news is that the movie's production ended on April 29, 2023 , this time confirmed by the director.

This new installment in the Mission: Impossible franchise is written and directed by Christopher McQuarrie, who also did the previous two Mission: Impossible movies. McQuarrie also produced the film alongside Tom Cruise. Skydance's David Ellison , Dana Goldberg , and Don Granger will serve as executive producers on the film alongside Tommy Gormley ( Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker ). Lorne Balfe , who composed the score for the previous film, returns as the composer. Fraser Taggart ( Edge of Tomorrow ) is the cinematographer while Academy Award nominee Eddie Hamilton ( Top Gun: Maverick ) serves as the editor.

Yes, indeed. Tom Cruise continues to do his own stunts in Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part 1 (and probably all the other Mission: Impossible movies to come). And this time, he’s taking things to a whole other level. During CinemaCon 2021, Paramount Pictures unveiled a video showcasing what Cruise himself describes as his “most dangerous stunt ever” . The sequence involves Cruise riding a motorcycle up a ramp and off a cliff, jumping off said motorcycle, and then parachuting to the ground.

To prepare for the stunt, the actor supposedly went through 500 hours of skydiving training and a whopping 1300 motorcycle jumps. It also took months of construction work to build the ramp used for the sequence. And as if that’s not mind-blowing already, reports say Cruise did the stunt six times before he got it right. Short of shooting Cruise into space on a rocket, it’s hard to see how they’re going to top this for the next one.

The nearly 10-minute featurette was released online on December 19, 2022, after premiering exclusively before IMAX showings of Avatar: The Way of Water . The featurette shows the process behind filming what is said to be the biggest stunt in cinema history, as Tom Cruise's Ethan Hunt rides a motorcycle off a ramp on a cliff, jumps off the motorcycle, and skydives his way down. It also feels like Cruise is once again proving all his naysayers wrong. McQuarrie revealed in an interview with Empire Magazine that this stunt wasn't even the most difficult to film , with that title belonging to a fight scene between Cruise and Esai Morales on top of a moving steam train.

"All the days on the train are exhausting. The train just sucks you dry. But in a good way. We're making a movie that involves sequences that they just don't shoot practically anymore, and haven't in a long, long time. The sequence that we're shooting right now is no exception. And like most things on Mission: Impossible, if we had known what the challenges were when we started out, we would never have done it."

On June 14, 2023, another behind-the-scenes featurette was released by Paramount , detailing a car chase set in the streets of Rome. For the dangerous sequence, the featurette shows that Cruise drove two different cars at high speeds and drifting, all while handcuffed to Hayley Atwell.

Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One is easily the biggest film in the franchise thus far. The train sequence will keep you on the edge of your seat, and we get a behind-the-scenes video on what went into making it.

The official synopsis for Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part 1 from Paramount reads:

In Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and his IMF team embark on their most dangerous mission yet: To track down a terrifying new weapon that threatens all of humanity before it falls into the wrong hands. With control of the future and the fate of the world at stake, and dark forces from Ethan's past closing in, a deadly race around the globe begins. Confronted by a mysterious, all-powerful enemy, Ethan is forced to consider that nothing can matter more than his mission – not even the lives of those he cares about most.

The director didn't say much about what the story would be like before the release. That said, he did talk about how the new movie expands on the emotional development of the cast during his appearance on the Light the Fuse podcast.

“When we went into making Fallout , I said to Tom, ‘I really want to make this more of an emotional journey for [Ethan Hunt],'” McQuarrie revealed. “Going into this, I said, ‘I want to take what we learned from Fallout and apply it to every character in the movie. I want everyone to have an emotional arc. … I just want the movie to have more feeling across the board.”

The director also confirmed that artificial intelligence would be a major factor in the film's plot.

Very early conversations, probably the earliest conversations about this were in 2018/2019, and we were looking for the villain, the next threat in Mission . We've done nuclear threats, we've done chemical threats, biological threats, you did the Rabbit's Foot, and God knows what threat that was. In trying to keep it fresh, we were looking outward, and the big conversation I had with Tom [Cruise] very early on was about technology, information technology, and what, now, everyone is talking about is AI.

McQuarrie also noted that casting Esai Morales allowed McQuarrie to tackle Ethan Hunt's past , which figures into the plot in a big way.

“Casting Esai allowed us to explore things with those characters and the notion of Ethan’s past. Ethan has a past that predates the IMF, and that allowed us to explore that with a character that knew Ethan before Ethan was Ethan. That’s part of who Gabriel is. Every detail of the story is very carefully considered. People who want to do their homework can derive from that name, whatever they please.”

Some of you may be wondering what the title Dead Reckoning even means and how it pertains to the plot of the film. In an interview with Empire Magazine McQuarrie hinted that the title refers to a particular deadly source that poses the greatest threat yet to Ethan Hunt and his team.

“There are many things emerging from Ethan’s past. Dead reckoning’ is a navigational term. It means you’re picking a course based solely on your last known position and that becomes quite the metaphor not only for Ethan, but several characters.”

Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning has been shrouded in so much secrecy that even Simon Pegg didn't know the name of the film until the trailer was released . During an interview with Collider's own Steve Weintraub for the movie Luck, Pegg said the following:

"Do you know what? I found out on the day of the trailer and not from Chris McQuarrie. I found out from the trailer. No, no one told me. So I texted McQ and was like, ' Dead Reckoning ? Were you going to tell us that at some point?' I heard it was going to be something else, but I like that. I like that because it reminds me of what ... Land of the Dead was originally called Dead Reckoning . So finally, I get to be in a film called Dead Reckoning ."

With recent blockbusters such as John Wick: Chapter 4 , Avatar: The Way of Water , and Oppenheimer all having runtimes that have clocked in over or right under 3 hours, there were rumors floating around that Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One would follow suit. Fortunately (or maybe unfortunately for some), the film clocks in at 2 hours and 36 minutes without credits, which still makes it the longest film yet in the franchise.

Yes, a sequel to Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning was announced along with the seventh film. The original plan was to shoot both movies back to back and release Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part 2 on August 5, 2022. Unfortunately, COVID-19 messed up those plans, so the eighth movie was pushed to July 7, 2023, before being pushed again to June 28, 2024. As a result of the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike, the movie has been delayed again, this time to May 23, 2025 . We've also heard that the title may be subject to change as well so stay tuned for more on that.
