Yes, Indians need a visa to go to Saudi Arabia. Whether for tourism, business, work, or family visits, Indian citizens must get a visa before traveling.

To get a visa, they need to apply through the Saudi embassy, consulate, or authorized visa centers in India. This involves filling out forms, providing documents, paying fees, and waiting for approval.

It's important to check visa requirements before planning a trip to Saudi Arabia to avoid any visa rejection problems .

If you're from India and want to visit Saudi Arabia, there are some rules to follow. Not all Indians can get a visa when they arrive in Saudi Arabia.

But if you have a visa for the United States, United Kingdom, or a Schengen country, you might be able to get one when you arrive in Saudi Arabia.

This means if you meet this requirement, you can easily get your Saudi visa when you arrive there.

Saudi Arabia offers different visas depending on why you want to visit:

Saudi Tourist Visa: If you want to explore Saudi Arabia for fun or sightseeing, you can get a tourist visa. It's usually for a short time and lets you see the country's attractions.

Saudi Business Visa: If you're going for work-related stuff like meetings or conferences, you'll need a business visa. A Saudi company usually sponsors this visa.

Saudi Work Visa : If you get a job in Saudi Arabia, you'll need a work visa. Your employer there will sponsor it, and you'll need to show job contracts and medical certificates.

Saudi Family Visa: If your family lives in Saudi Arabia and you want to join them, you'll need a family visa. A family member there will sponsor you, and you'll need to prove your relationship.

Saudi Student Visa: If you're going to study in Saudi Arabia, you'll need a student visa. Your school will sponsor it, and you'll need proof that you're enrolled and have money to support yourself.

Hajj and Umrah Visa : Muslims going for the Hajj or Umrah pilgrimage need special visas. These visas are for the pilgrimage season and have specific rules.

Saudi Transit Visa: If you're just passing through Saudi Arabia on your way somewhere else, you can get a transit visa. It lets you stay for a short time while waiting for your next flight.

Each visa has its own rules about who can get it, what documents you need, how long it takes to process, and how long it's valid. Make sure to check the rules for the visa you need before you apply.

Choose Visa Type: Decide which visa you need based on why you're going to Saudi Arabia. There are different types like tourist, business, work, or family visas.

Saudi Arabia business visa

Saudi Embassies issue visitors’ visas to business people with commercial and industrial interests in Saudi Arabia. Saudi Arabia: Here are the updated rules for Hajj 2024 that prioritise pilgrims' health and safety

Would-be pilgrims must meet vaccination criteria and obtain official permits

20230627 hajj 2023

Dubai: Saudi Arabia has announced updated conditions for performing Hajj in 2024, which include several new requirements aimed at ensuring the health and safety of pilgrims.

The Ministries of Hajj and Umrah, along with the Ministry of Health, specified that all pilgrims must obtain a Hajj permit through the Nusk platform, which is crucial for the legitimacy of their pilgrimage.

Additionally, registration through the Sehaty application is required to verify vaccination status.

Key conditions set forth for the 2024 Hajj include:

• Mandatory registration in the Sehaty app to confirm necessary vaccinations.

• Residents within Saudi Arabia must have received the COVID-19 vaccine, influenza vaccine, and meningitis vaccine within the last five years.

• International pilgrims are required to have the Neisseria meningitidis vaccine administered at least 10 days but not more than five years prior to their arrival, verified by a certificate from their home country. They must also be vaccinated against polio.

  • Saudi Arabia warns against unauthorised operators and fake websites for Hajj pilgrims
  • Saudi Arabia: Not permissible to perform Hajj without permit
  • Fighting polio: Hajj pilgrims get health boost in Bill Gates-supported disease control effort in Saudi Arabia
  • Saudi Arabia sets deadline for Hajj registration

Further general conditions for all pilgrims:

• A valid passport through at least the end of Dhu Al Hijjah 1445 (June 7, 2024).

• A minimum age requirement of 12 years.

• Vaccinations against COVID-19, seasonal flu, and meningitis.

• A health certification confirming the pilgrim is free from any infectious diseases.

The announcement follows a recent statement by the Council of Senior Scholars, emphasizing that performing Hajj without an official permit is considered sinful. The measures aim to facilitate the smooth conduct of Hajj rituals and to enhance the quality of services provided to pilgrims, ensuring a safe and spiritually fulfilling experience for all attendees.

Travelling to Europe has become much more convenient for GCC and Indian visitors. The European Commission has approved new regulations for the issuance of Schengen visas to citizens of Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Oman and India who live in their home countries.

Under the new system, Saudi, Bahraini and Omanis will now have access to multiple-entry visas, allowing them to travel to 29 European countries using the same visa within five years.

This implementation has significantly simplified the process of obtaining a Schengen visa, making it much more convenient for eligible applicants, even first-time applicants. They can now look forward to receiving a multiple-entry visa that remains valid for up to five years, relieving them of the stress of frequent visa applications.

"The European Commission has adopted new rules for the issuance of Schengen visas for Saudi, Bahraini and Omani nationals residing in their home country. It is an important step promoting people-to-people contacts and facilitating exchanges between the EU and GCC citizens," the delegation of the European Union in GCC posted on X.

Kuwaitis can be issued with long-term, multi-entry Schengen visas valid for five years. UAE nationals enjoy visa-free travel to the Schengen nations, permitting stays of up to three months at a time. However, a Schengen visa is a must for UAE residents.

Additionally, the European Commission adopted specific rules on issuing multiple entry visas to Indians. Under the new regulations, Indian travellers are now eligible to obtain a two-year Schengen visa, a significant enhancement compared to the shorter validity periods previously offered.

To qualify for this extended visa, applicants must have obtained and used two Schengen visas within the last three years in accordance with the regulations. Upon successfully utilising the two-year visa, travellers can typically anticipate eligibility for a five-year Schengen visa, subject to the maintenance of sufficient passport validity.

This decision comes in the context of strengthened relations under the EU-India Common Agenda on Migration and Mobility, which seeks comprehensive cooperation on migration policy between the EU and India, with the facilitation of people-to-people contacts being a key aspect due to the importance of India as a partner for the EU.

These changes ease the visa application process and facilitate smoother travel experiences.

Schengen visas allow the holder to travel freely in the Schengen area for short stays of a maximum of 90 days in any 180-day period. The visas are not purpose-bound, but they do not grant the right to work. The Schengen area consists of 29 European countries (of which 25 are EU states): Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, Estonia, Greece, Spain, France, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Hungary, Malta, Netherlands, Austria, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Slovakia, Finland and Sweden, along with Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland.

Travelling to Europe gets easier! Check new Schengen Visa rules

N ow moving to Europe will be easier as the UK has revised its visa rules. The European Union (EU) has recently updated the Schengen visa rules to facilitate travel to Europe for nationals of specific countries.

The European Commission has approved the issuance of multiple-entry Schengen visas for citizens of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, including India, Bahrain, Oman, and Saudi Arabia. This decision, announced by EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell on April 22, 2024, aims to standardise the visa rules for these nations.

What is a Schengen visa?

Schengen visas afford individuals the freedom to travel unrestricted within the Schengen area for short stays of up to 90 days within any 180-day period. While these visas are not restricted by purpose, they do not confer the right to work.

The Schengen area encompasses 29 European countries, including 25 EU states: Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, Estonia, Greece, Spain, France, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Hungary, Malta, Netherlands, Austria, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Slovakia, Finland, and Sweden. Additionally, it includes Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland.

Under the newly implemented "cascade" regime for India, Indian citizens will be eligible to receive long-term, multi-entry Schengen visas valid for two years. However, they need to meet the requirement of obtaining and legally utilizing two visas within the preceding three years.

Following the two-year visa, applicants may typically qualify for a five-year visa if their passport has adequate remaining validity. Throughout the validity period of these visas, holders enjoy travel privileges equivalent to those of visa-free nationals.

The decision, made on April 18, stemmed from the enhanced relations within the EU-India common agenda on migration and mobility. This agenda aims to foster comprehensive cooperation on migration policy between the EU and India, with a particular focus on facilitating people-to-people interactions due to India's significant partnership with the EU. Before this revision, Schengen countries typically issued short-term visas even to frequent travelers to Europe. Longer-term visas, such as six-month, two-year, and five-year visas, were rare in India.

For frequent flyers, it's not just the visa fees that pose an issue. The repetitive task of arranging paperwork for submission is what they find most cumbersome.

Major Schengen visa update for Bahrain, Oman, Saudi Arabia and India

Under the new arrangement, nationals of Saudi Arabia, Oman, and Bahrain will be eligible for five-year multiple-entry Schengen visas

Marisha Singh

Passport holders from Bahrain, Oman and Saudi Arabia, are set to benefit from extended travel privileges as the European Union (EU) announced the issuance of five-year multiple-entry Schengen visas.

The announcement was made by Josep Borrell, the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, during the High-Level Forum on Regional Security and Cooperation held in Luxembourg.

He said, “I would like to welcome the adoption by the [European] Commission this morning of decisions that will allow to harmonise the rules on the issuing of multiple-entry visas for GCC countries.”

Borrell expressed the EU’s commitment to strengthening relations with Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries by harmonising visa rules.

Schengen visa changes

Under the new arrangement, nationals of Saudi Arabia, Oman, and Bahrain will be eligible for five-year multiple-entry Schengen visas, allowing them to make multiple visits to Schengen Area countries within a calendar year.

However, travellers must adhere to the 90/180-day rule, limiting stays to a maximum of three months within any six-month period.

While specific details are yet to be officially released by EU authorities, it is anticipated that first-time applicants and eligible passport holders from the mentioned countries will benefit from the extended visa validity as well.

Notably, citizens of the UAE are currently the only GCC nationals who enjoy a visa-free entry to the Schengen Area, while discussions are ongoing between other GCC nations and the EU to further ease visa requirements.

Earlier this year, talks saw EU countries consider the lifting of visa requirements for nationals of Kuwait and Qatar based on several key criteria, as revealed in a recent report:

  • Irregular migration
  • Public policy and security
  • Economic benefits
  • EU relations with the countries

The European Union Commission’s assessment concluded that both Kuwait and Qatar present a low risk in terms of irregular immigration.

Should the European visa requirements for these GCC countries be lifted, travellers would be eligible for the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS).

Indian nationals benefit from new Schengen visa rule change

In addition to the visa changes for Gulf citizens, the EU has also adopted more favorable Schengen visa rules for Indian nationals.

Eligible Indian travellers with an established travel history and prior Schengen visa usage will now be granted multiple-entry visas with extended validity, starting from two years and potentially extending to five years, subject to passport validity.

Previously, the standard rules of the Visa Code applied.

Commission allows multiple-entry Schengen visas for India, Bahrain, Oman and Saudi Arabia

On 22 April 2024, EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell announced a decision adopted by the European Commission to harmonise the rules for granting multiple-entry visas for the citizens of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries.

The three decisions update the rules for the issuance of multiple-entry Schengen visas for nationals of Bahrain, Oman and Saudi Arabia.

Nationals of these three GCC member states applying for short-stay Schengen visas from consulates in their country of nationality will be issued a multiple-entry visa valid for a period of five years.

Separately, Indian nationals applying for short-stay Schengen visas from within India will be issued a multiple-entry visa valid for a period of two years, on the condition that they have previously obtained and used two Schengen visas within the preceding three years.

Visa fees for Gambian nationals reduced to standard level

The European Council has decided that the visa fee for nationals of The Gambia who wish to travel to the Schengen area will be reduced from EUR 120 to the standard visa application fee of EUR 80.

Because of a lack of cooperation of The Gambia as regards readmission of its nationals illegally staying in the EU, the Council had decided in December 2022 to increase the standard application fee for nationals of The Gambia to €120.

Since then, The Gambia has substantially and sustainably improved its cooperation on readmission as regards the organisation of return flights and operations.

The EU also decided, in 2021, to temporarily suspend the following for nationals of The Gambia:

  • the possibility that member states waive requirements with regard to the documents to be submitted by Gambian visa applicants;
  • the limitation of the processing period to 15 calendar days;
  • the issuing of multiple entry visas;
  • the optional visa fee waiver for holders of diplomatic and service passports.

These suspensions currently remain in place.
