There are three things to consider when picking your best Alaska train tour. First, what route would you like to take? The railroad runs 470 miles from Fairbanks to Seward. Popular Alaska train routes include the Denali Star between Fairbanks and Anchorage with a favorite stop in Denali National Park , the Coastal Classic between Anchorage and Seward , and the Glacier Discovery running roundtrip from Anchorage to Whittier and Grandview. What's the best of the best? Check out our Most Scenic Alaska Train Routes advice page.
Next, what train service are you interested in? The Alaska Railroad , which includes the Adventure Class and GoldStar Dome classes of service, runs the full length of the railway in Alaska. The Wilderness Express and McKinley Explorer are privately operated premium dome train services. The Wilderness Express runs between Anchorage and Fairbanks, while the McKinley Express only travels between Anchorage and Denali Park. To see what each has to offer, please visit our Alaska train comparison page. You can also visit our Best Alaska Train for Me advice page for more amenity details.
Finally, how much time do you have? Although taking the train in Alaska is a wonderfully scenic experience, travel by railway most often takes longer than traveling by road. We usually recommend combining train and motorcoach service to make the most of your time and budget. And for those travelers with less time to play, a train day trip out of Anchorage is a perfect option. You can either head north to Talkeetna near Denali Park or south to Seward near Kenai Fjords . There is also an exciting day trip train option to Spencer Glacier and Grandview .
Many of the best Alaska trains are incorporated into our custom travel packages . To see more, head to our Alaska Trip Finder and search for packages based on travel by train.

6 Spectacular Scenic Train Trips in Alaska
Leave the cruise ship to see denali and less-traveled areas of this gorgeous state.
Larry Bleiberg,
With towering mountain ranges, thousands of miles of coastline and immense wilderness, it’s hard for a visitor to experience the full scope of Alaska’s beauty — unless you take the train.
The Alaska Railroad (800-544-0552) links the state’s largest cities and offers a lifeline to remote settlements far from any road. With several routes and train cars designed for sightseeing, it’s also a perfect way to view Alaska from the ground up.

The rail line organizes an array of touring options, including train-plane travel packages, rafting excursions and guided hikes. It also rightfully boasts about its GoldStar package, an upgraded passenger service that includes meals in a dining car, an outdoor viewing platform and glass-topped rail cars designed for taking in soaring mountain views. (Note that the Alaska Railroad’s wheelchair lifts are available only in Anchorage, Wasilla and Talkeetna.) Also consider the White Pass & Yukon Route Railroad, which is separate from the Alaska Railroad and often listed among the world’s most scenic rail lines. One of its routes, described below, takes you from the historic town of Skagway and along the path of gold rush prospectors, deep into the Yukon.
If you’re visiting by cruise ship , your line may offer one or more of these train trips as an optional excursion.
Here are some top trips to consider.
Denali Star
Route: Anchorage to Fairbanks
The backbone of the Alaska Railroad, this route connects the state’s two biggest cities and provides a spectacular way to visit Denali National Park . While travelers can make the 356-mile, 12-hour trip in a day, many like to break it up with overnights in the funky town of Talkeetna or at the entrance to Denali. It’s possible to connect with park buses that head into the wilderness home of Alaska’s big four: grizzlies, moose, caribou and Dall sheep.
But there’s wonderful sightseeing from the train itself, including views of towering Denali, the tallest mountain in North America. (Tip: The best mountain views come at mileposts 224.3 and 279.) The journey takes you through deep canyons, skirts wild rivers and crosses the towering 296-foot-tall Hurricane Gulch rail trestle. Though you may pass the occasional wilderness cabin, you’ll be snaking deep into unspoiled (besides the train tracks!) nature.
Details: Trips available from May 11 to Sept. 18, 2022. Adult one-way tickets are $259; $473 for GoldStar service, which includes seated breakfast, lunch, dinner, drinks and access to a two-story, glass-domed car and outdoor viewing platform.

Hurricane Turn Train
Route: Talkeetna to Hurricane Gulch in summer; Anchorage to Hurricane Gulch in winter
The unique Hurricane Turn Train is one of the few on the continent to offer flag-stop service. It operates like a sort of backcountry city bus, letting hunters, hikers and adventurers leave or join the train anywhere along the wilderness route, as it climbs from Talkeetna north through the Indian River Valley.
AARP® Dental Insurance Plan administered by Delta Dental Insurance Company
Dental insurance plans for members and their families
Route highlights include views of Denali and the turnaround at Hurricane Gulch Bridge, the longest span on the Alaska Railroad. During the summer, many passengers depart at Curry for a walking tour of the historic resort community and a jet boat ride back to Talkeetna on the Susitna River.
While the train has several stops along its 55-mile route, its main appeal is the authentic Alaska camaraderie; you’re likely to meet locals and visitors heading off the grid. Although there’s no food service, Talkeetna restaurants and its general store will provide to-go meals for dining on board.
Details : In the summer, the Hurricane operates Thursday through Monday. Round-trip adult tickets are $114. (For pricing on the Curry train-jet boat excursion, check the railroad’s site .) The Winter Hurricane operates on the first Thursday of the month October through May. Round-trip tickets are $135 for adults; $68 for adults 65 and older.
Coastal Classic Train
Route: Anchorage to Seward
With glaciers, rugged coastline and mountain lakes, this 228-mile round-trip excursion on the Coastal Classic takes advantage of Alaska’s long summer days to cover some of the state’s prettiest territory. The blue and yellow Alaska Railroad train glides out of downtown Anchorage at 6:45 a.m., passing through a wildlife refuge and along the Turnagain Arm between the Chugach Mountains and the sea. Along the way it offers views of waterfalls, historic rail trestles and remote emerald lakes, stopping in the town of Girdwood and then heading through Kenai Fjords National Park. Riders arrive at the rugged fishing town of Seward on Resurrection Bay just after 11 a.m. for a seven-hour layover that can include tours, lunch at a remote island lodge, or a dog-sled ride and visit to husky kennels. There’s also a chance to browse shops and galleries, and visit the outstanding Alaska SeaLife Center aquarium. The return trip leaves at 6 p.m., arriving back in Anchorage just after 10.
Details: Service from May 7 to Sept. 18, 2022. Adult round-trip tickets during high season (June 1-Aug. 31) are $197; $393 for GoldStar service, which includes seated breakfast and dinner, drinks and access to a two-story, glass-domed car and outdoor viewing platform. For shoulder or “value” season (May 7-31 and Sept. 1-18) fares drop to $173, $347 for GoldStar service.
Aurora Winter Train
Take in snow-blanketed Alaska scenery from the cozy comfort of a rail car on the Aurora Winter Train . This seasonal service offers a chance to escape the crowds and enjoy the tranquil landscape on an 11.5-hour trip.
The train makes whistle stops for backcountry adventure seekers and others heading to remote cabins and campsites along a 50-mile stretch south of Hurricane Gulch, offering the possibility of a Denali view. Many travelers also come aboard to reach unique festivals like Talkeetna’s Bachelor Auction and its Wilderness Woman competition. Another popular option: overnighting in Talkeetna to take a pie-baking class at its famous roadhouse.
And while there’s no guarantee that you’ll see the spectacular (and unpredictable) northern lights, many winter visitors are able to catch the wondrous show.
Details: The train runs on a limited schedule, leaving Anchorage on Saturday and returning from Fairbanks on Sunday, along with select midweek departures in December, February and March. Adult round-trip tickets are $446; $224 for adults 65 and older. Other popular options include a train-air package, which includes rail service from Anchorage to Fairbanks and a flight back. During value season (April 2-May 8, 2022) tickets are $426; $214 for adults 65 and older. Last year, fall value season ran from Sept. 18 to Nov. 21; this year’s dates and fares are yet to be announced.
Glacier Discovery Train
Route: Anchorage to Grandview
Consider this train your shuttle to adventure, as it makes stops in several tiny towns with exciting touring options for day-trippers (and those staying longer).
For example, after leaving Anchorage at 9:45 a.m., this train visits the town of Portage. Disembark there to visit the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center, where you can see black and brown bears, moose, caribou and wood bison. Or stay onboard for a trip through a mountain tunnel to the town of Whittier, which serves as the gateway to Prince William Sound. Here you can catch glacier and wildlife day cruises, and make connections to Alaska Marine Highway System ferries and cruise ships.
The train then backtracks to pick up passengers who stopped in Portage, and makes a whistle stop at Spencer Glacier, where the U.S. Forest Service offers a free ranger-led hike in Chugach National Forest. (You also can book rafting or even ice-climbing tours from here.) Finally, it heads through mountain tunnels to Grandview, offering vistas of mountains, meadows and glaciers. Then it turns around and does everything in reverse on the way back to Anchorage, where it arrives at 9:15 p.m.
Details: The full route runs June 4-Sept. 11, 2022; you can ride part of the route, to Whittier, starting May 14, 2022. Adult round-trip tickets are $152.
White Pass & Yukon Route Railroad
Route: Skagway to White Pass Summit
One of the world’s most spectacular train rides, a day trip from the Gold Rush town of Skagway, takes passengers along a well-worn path. The narrow-gauge rail line opened in 1898 to haul prospectors to the Klondike gold rush, climbing nearly 3,000 feet in 20 miles. For decades, it served as the primary route to the Yukon, hauling freight and supplies to mining camps and settlements. Today the route, with tunnels and high trestles, is still considered an engineering marvel.
Now it operates as a heritage railway, with distinctive green and yellow engines pulling trains full of cruise ship passengers and other visitors into the wilderness. It passes waterfalls and deep gulches, and offers sweeping views of mountaintops and glaciers. The most popular outing, a 40-mile round-trip White Pass summit excursion , lasts about two and a half hours.
You can also choose from a range of daylong trips, some including the chance to hike or to bike down the mountain pass.
Details: Adult tickets for the summit excursion begin at $134 round-trip. Reserve at wpyr.com or call 800-343-7373.

Alaska Railroad Transportation
For many visitors, a trip on the Alaska Railroad is a relaxing way to see some of the most beautiful parts of Alaska without worrying about oncoming traffic! In addition to providing a safe and efficient way to travel, the railroad crew knows where all of the best views are. In fact, there’s a spot north of Talkeetna known as “Kodachrome Corner,” where the train comes to a full stop. On sunny days, there is an unobstructed view of Denali. Everyone takes turns going to the open windows to take the “perfect shot” of the giant mountain.
During the summer season, the Alaska Railroad features student guides who share historic moments about the railroad along the way. They’ll also encourage you to point out wildlife to fellow passengers. This includes Dall Sheep and beluga whales along the Turnagain Arm, moose, bears and caribou. You’ll also learn about special features of the railroad, including the giant bridge over Hurrican Gulch, the unique one-lane rail/auto tunnel to Whittier and the unusual “corkscrew” route up to Grandview Glacier on the way between Portage and Seward. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions.

Best Train Ride
Most Scenic Alaska Railroad Trips
Most people that have traveled the entire Alaska Railroad system would likely agree that either the Denali Star route between Anchorage and Denali or the Coastal Classic Route between Anchorage and Seward is the most scenic.
On a clear day, it hard to top the views of Mt. Denali from the train. At 20,322 feet Mt. Denali is the tallest peak in North America and the train offers a number of unobstructed views as it passes within 50 miles of the summit. Some of the best views are just north and south of Talkeetna across the Susitna River. Of course there is lots to see on the Denali Star route in addition to Mt. Denali. Just north of Anchorage is a beautiful section where the train follows the Chugach Mountains then turns and crosses the Knik and Matanuska Rivers… heading north towards the Talkeetna Mountains and into the Matanuska Valley. North of Talkeetna the train crosses over the 918-foot Hurricane Gulch trestle, towering 296 feet above the creek below and allowing breathtaking photo opportunities. Before arriving at Denali Park you pass through Broad Pass, the highest point on the Alaska Railroad at 2,363 feet, featuring impressive panoramic views of the Alaska Range.
The Coastal Classic route between Anchorage and Seward is a favorite of many local Alaskans, and tends to be a great bet even if when the weather is less than optimal. Much of the first hour south of Anchorage hugs the coastline along the Turnagain Arm where there are great views of the train as it rounds several scenic points. Dall sheep can often be seen on the rocky cliffs above and passengers are also frequently treated to a unique phenomenon known as a bore tide. South of Portage the train separates from the highway and enters a truly remote and rugged section of track. You will head through the Placer River Valley, right past the impressive ice wall of Spencer Glacier and over the 1,063 foot pass of the Kenai Mountains… appropriately named Grandview. Another great bonus to the Coastal Classic route is just the fact that you are going to Seward. A day cruise from Seward to Kenai Fjords National Park is an absolute must see Alaska experience.
So which route is the best? You will have to decide which is right for you, and by all means, give us a call and we can offer some additional guidance. Don’t be surprised when we try to talk you into going to both Denali Park and Seward… it can be done in less time than you think… here is a 5 night itinerary.
Fly into Anchorage and spend the night. Head south to Seward on the train and take a Kenai Fjords National Park cruise. The next morning take the Park Connection Motorcoach from Seward to Talkeetna for one night. The next day enjoy a scenic flight to Mt. Denali with a glacier landing before catching the bus to Denali Park . Two nights in Denali will give you time for the full day park tour plus an optional tour like rafting or a dinner theater. Finally, take the train from Denali back to Anchorage… if you book the McKinley Explorer you may even have time to fly home that night. Of course this trip can be reversed, as well as modified to meet up with a Seward or Whittier cruise ship… and would be much more relaxed if you took a full week.
Remember, we can also help with lodging, tour or the whole vacation package… just give us a call at 800.266.8625.

Debra , 04/20/2023
Looking for travel in 2024 or 2025, my wife and I (Both in 60’s) Would like to see as much of Alaska as possible. Mostly by train and maybe a short cruise boat to see glaciers. Mostly staying around 12-14 days. Not the largest budget. (Example: We did Hawaii for 13 days 12 nights for 15,000 with premium economy seating on plane flights). So anything around this price range, less would be fine.

Every effort was made to accommodate someone in a wheelchair. Enjoyed the trip to the summit. Great informative commentary. Recommend.
Loved our train ride . Staff were all very nice and knowledgeable. Scenery was just gorgeous. Train was very comfortable
I first did this tour on my first trip to Alaska in 2010 and wanted to repeat it. Growing up in a railroad family, trains have been a huge part of my life. Again, I wasn t disappointed one bit. I loved riding the rails again.

Rail Road-From Fairbanks
Alaska railroad tours from fairbanks.
Alaska is consistently voted as one of the most scenic, varied and dramatic places in the world when it comes to scenery and landscapes. This accounts for the numerous motorhomes and camper vans you’ll see driving along the Parks, Denali or Seward Highway, pulling up every now and again to take in some spectacular vista. However, there’s another great way to discover the best of Alaska and that is on board the Alaska Railroad. Here are our most scenic train journeys, starting in Fairbanks and are an ideal extension to your self drive tour, Alaska Ferry Trip or Inside Passage cruise. Board the last full-service railroad in North America or one of the privately operated trains. Admire the breathtaking nature in glass-domed or regular rail car compartments - all with large panorama windows ensuring unobstructed views of snowcapped mountain ranges, pristine scenery and wildlife. Fairbanks is the perfect change over point for a journey into Alaska’s interior and Arctic Region. Founded by a gold prospector in 1901, Fairbanks, like many other towns in Alaska, struggled until the construction of the Trans-Alaska pipeline in the mid 1970s. Now this eclectic mix of log cabins, modern office buildings and a university campus is recognised as Alaska’s gateway to the Arctic. Several tours are available from Fairbanks, including trips to the Arctic Circle, the native village Fort Yukon or Chena Hot Springs Resort. A popular activity is the Gold Dredge No. 8 tour or the Riverboat Discovery Cruise on the Nenana River. Check out these adventures to easily fill the long days — just don’t forget to sleep at some point!

Nestled on a peninsula south of Haines, one of the most beautiful towns to visit in Alaska , Chilkat State Park is among the least-visited tourist destinations in Alaska, thanks to its location further away from many popular towns, but that doesn’t mean it’s not worth visiting.
The 9,837-acre park has a lot to offer, from scenic campsites to amazing hiking trails with views. There are also impressive fishing, boating, and picnicking opportunities. Visitors can spot various inlet wildlife species, including porpoises, seals, and whales.
5 Wood-Tikchik State Park
Enjoy amazing remote paddling adventures in america’s largest state park.
Avid adventurers seeking solitude and remote paddling experiences are always drawn toward the Gates of the Arctic , which makes sense since it’s among the most remote national parks in America .
However, visitors can also enjoy unforgettable remote paddling adventures in Wood-Tikchik State Park , which is the largest state park in the US, stretching over 1.6 million acres of space. The park is home to impressive lakes and rivers, where one can go kayaking and rafting.
10 Best Road Trips You Can Take Through The Scenic State Of Alaska
4 independence mine state historical park, learn about alaska’s rich gold rush history in this state park.
Situated in the Talkeetna Mountains in Hatcher Pass, Independence Mine State Historical Park houses an abandoned mine that was once Alaska’s most productive hardrock gold mine. It stayed in operation even after World War II until it was permanently shut down in 1951.
In 1980, Independence Mine State Historical Park was established to preserve the site and has worked tirelessly to restore the mining buildings as well as the tunnels, allowing travelers to enjoy a trip back to Alaska’s gold rush era. Apart from learning about mining history, tourists can enjoy camping on the nearby Gold Mint Trailhead.
3 Kachemak Bay State Park
Experience a spectacular coastline and marine wildlife in one of the best state parks in alaska.
Kachemak Bay State Park , situated across the bay from Homer, is one of the best state parks in Alaska, thanks to its spectacular coastline, hidden coves, and beautiful marine wildlife that vacationers can explore by kayaking.
Visitors will start their fun adventure on the way to the park via a water taxi, which comes with several scenic stops, including the Glacier Lake Trail, which winds through lush forests and offers amazing views.
8 Things That Don't Exist In Alaska
2 denali state park, beautiful mountain views, hiking trails, and campgrounds make this state park worth visiting.
Denali State Park , surrounded by the Alaska range to the west and the Talkeetna Mountains to the east, boasts one of Alaska’s most spectacular landscapes, which ranges from alpine tundra to lowland streams. Many people believe that the best view of Denali, North America’s tallest peak, can be enjoyed from Denali National Park , but this state park actually guarantees some of the most incredible views of the mountain.
Since the state park offers an opportunity to enjoy the mountain views from the east, visitors will not only marvel at the south and north peaks of Denali but also the Alaska Range. Denali State Park is also home to many scenic hiking trails that suit travelers of all abilities and several RV parks and campgrounds that come with impressive access to trails and views.
If you are a fan of the Aurora Borealis, Denali National Park is one of the three places in North America where travelers can be sure to see the Northern Lights .
1 Chugach State Park
This state park offers incredibly diverse wildlife, scenic hiking trails, and amazing camping experiences.
America’s fourth-largest state park comes with plenty of fun adventures, and whether visiting in summer or winter, there is always something to do there. Chugach State Park is home to some of the most diverse wildlife species in the country, with moose and bears being among the common sightings.
It is also home to multiple scenic hiking trails that beautifully showcase its majesty, and whether seeking an adventurous experience or a family retreat, there are plenty of options. Camping is also a great way to explore the beauty of Chugach State Park, and many of the campgrounds are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
Chugach State Park is one of the unique adventures to enjoy when visiting Anchorage because of its close proximity to the city. Visiting the park is also among the things to do in Alaska on a backpacker’s budget since it offers free entry and costs just $5 for parking.

Aug. 8 is almost not possible. It is about 9 hours drive, hand on wheels. So you'd plan an overnight stay about halfway.
WAY too much driving. Cut out either Valdez or Homer.
And it would help if you were more specific than just "explore". What do you intend to see and do in each place?
Far too much driving. You need to drop Valdez or Homer.
Think, every hour sitting in a car is an hour you could be doing an actual activity.
... and if Homer's on the list, I'd do it before Seward ; and return to Anchorage from Seward. Driving from Homer to ANC on a day you plan to fly out has risk (i.e. highway shut down risk) to it.
Thank you for the feedback.
2. We wanted to go to Matanuska Glacier and read that the Richardson Hwy is very scenic, hence chose the drive from Denali to Valdez.
3. If we skip Homer, where can we add additional 2 days? Any town between Seward and Anchorage ?
We will be renting a car . Can we drive Denali Hwy or should we drive up to FB and drive south on Richardson?
Many folks drive from Denali to the Glacierview area the same way…Parks hwy to Wasilla, then to Palmer and then up the Glenn Highway. One of my favorite drives in the state is from Palmer to Sheep mountain lodge. :)
Would you recommend adding a day at Whittier before heading south to Seward?
DNP- glacier view - Whittier -seward -homer- anc
Sorry, but you're putting the cart before the horse. First figure out what you want to see and do, and that will tell you where to go and how long to stay in each place.
On that route I'd recommend staying the first night in Fairbanks and another night in Glenallen.
We have the same number of nights in June. We are staying in:
I'd love to get to Valdez, I just don't feel we have time. If Valdez is important to you, maybe drop Homer.

Seven of the Most Beautiful Roads in the United States
From Alaska to Florida, these serene and exhilarating stretches beg you to take the scenic route
Teddy Brokaw
“SEE AMERICA FIRST,” proclaimed an April 1, 1906, headline in the New York Times , encouraging American tourists to expand their vacation horizons beyond Europe. The slogan, debuted by Utah boosters a few months earlier to promote westward travel, received the Times ’ enthusiastic endorsement: “In a fortnight the Far Easterner can really go Far West and see things worth seeing, see many scenic wonders by the way.”
Today, affordable flights to far-flung destinations abound, and it’s easy for the American traveler to again lose sight of how much beauty and diversity exists in their own backyard. The great American road trip has long offered a cure for such complacency, and this summer should be no different: About 75 percent of Americans are expected to travel by car.
Seeking inspiration for your own road trip? These roads are more than just pathways to some of the nation’s most compelling destinations—they’re unforgettable in their own right. With scenic vistas, roadside attractions and historic curiosities aplenty, these routes call to mind another bygone travel slogan: Getting there is half the fun!
Alaska Highway, Alaska
In the early days of World War II, fears of a potential attack on the Territory of Alaska spurred military officials to create the Alaska Highway . In just nine months, more than 10,000 members of the Army Corps of Engineers completed over 1,500 miles of roadway, a pace no doubt motivated by a healthy dose of competition. Take the 95th Regiment: an under-equipped unit of Black engineers who staked their paychecks on a bet with their white counterparts that they could finish a bridge in five days. It only took them three and a half, and not because of slapdash workmanship—the Sikanni Chief River Bridge was the first permanent structure on the highway and stood for half a century before arson destroyed it in 1992.
On the way to the permafrost of the Alaskan tundra, eagle-eyed motorists may spot caribou, moose and grizzly bears along the road. Those keen on eyeing bald eagles should plan a stop near the Canadian border at the Tetlin National Wildlife Refuge . Its wetlands serve as a pit stop for 180 species of migratory birds , including America’s national bird, on their springtime journey towards the ice fields and glaciers at the road’s northernmost reaches. Drivers who opt to follow their wingbeats north can check out a very different type of air travel at Mukluk Land in Tok, Alaska. The junkyard-turned-amusement park is home to “Santa’s Rocket Ship” (a futuristically styled bus straight out of “The Jetsons”) as well as Skee-Ball, miniature golf and— what else?—the world’s largest mukluk (a sealskin boot).
Highway 101, California
“The 101” is a drivable California postcard, taking motorists past the Hollywood sign in Los Angeles, over the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, and even through a redwood tree way up north in Klamath. (That last one requires a quick turn off on Exit 769.) The route offers a chance to not only see some of the best that California has to offer, but also smell and taste it, when the road cuts through the heart of Sonoma’s wine country. Over 400 different wineries produce varietals from chardonnay to cabernet, which can be sampled in fetching estates nestled among the stunning vineyards. Just be sure to bring a designated driver.
Weary road trippers looking to break up the journey don’t need to stray far from the highway to find accommodations as unique as the sights along the way. Consider a stop at Oceano Dunes in Pismo Beach, where drivers can pull directly onto the sand and camp overnight at the water’s edge. Those less keen on roughing it can head up the road a few dozen miles to the iconic Madonna Inn . This relic of 1950s maximalism boasts 110 rooms, each sporting a unique theme, ranging from “Caveman” to “Swiss Chalet” and even “Sir Walter Raleigh.”
Hana Highway, Hawaii
The earliest incarnation of the Hana Highway dates to the 16th century, when Native Hawaiians first paved the road with lava blocks. Today, the route is one of Maui’s greatest tourist draws, with its 617 switchbacks hiding some of the island’s best attractions. A trek through a bamboo forest leads hikers to the 400-foot Waimoku Falls , while the natural pools formed by waterfalls at Waikamoi Stream are a swimmer’s dream. The highway even boasts its very own “ Garden of Eden ,” a botanical garden and arboretum offering nature trails and glimpses of peacocks.
The overwhelming popularity of the Road to Hana has brought changes both positive and negative to the area. “In the past 20 years or so, lots of local businesses have popped up and are thriving along the highway,” says Viola Gaskell , a photojournalist born and raised in Hana. “Places like Ono Farms in Kipahulu, which has all sorts of exotic fruit and trees, give people the opportunity to try local things along the road.” But increased tourism makes it more important than ever to “travel pono ”—that is, respectfully and responsibly. Part of that effort is remembering that the Hana Highway isn’t just a stunningly scenic drive, but also a vital artery for the real people who live and work in East Maui every day. “It’s super important for people to only go to places where they're welcome,” Gaskell adds. Locals may be driving much faster, “so if you see a local person driving behind you, you should pull over as soon as you can.”
Going-to-the-Sun Road, Montana
Millions of years ago, the area around Montana’s Glacier National Park was submerged under ice a mile deep. Movement and melt carved the landscape over the course of millennia, leaving behind the craggy peaks and frigid lakes that dot the area. But the most striking reminders of the region’s prehistoric origins are the 25 glaciers that give the park its name. A few of the 7,000-year-old behemoths are visible directly from Going-to-the-Sun Road , including Jackson Glacier, which has its own scenic overlook along the route. A mere 50 years ago, Jackson Glacier was nearly twice as large , serving as a constant reminder of a broader story in the park: the glaciers have been shrinking for decades, and more than 50 have disappeared entirely since the mid-1800s.
Visitors may be flocking to Glacier to see these natural wonders before they vanish, but the fascination with glaciers was just as strong a century ago, when the federal government first began considering a permanent route to accommodate sightseers. Surveyors from the Bureau of Public Roads rappelled over cliffsides and faced down bears as they plotted the route, and the work was so grueling that labor turnover topped 300 percent. Today, the journey is not so treacherous—in fact, you can even let someone else do the driving. The park’s historic Red Jammers , a fleet of 1930s ragtop tour buses, allow visitors to take in stunning mountain, lake and waterfall views from the road. Meanwhile, those bringing their own vehicles should take heed: Reservations are necessary for the road during peak hours. “Glacier has steadily grown in popularity over the last 20 years to the point where heavy traffic has caused unsafe conditions,” says Gina Icenoggle, public information officer for Glacier National Park. “As a result, Glacier has implemented a vehicle reservation system.” To avoid disappointment, Icenoggle recommends visiting recreation.gov when planning a visit to obtain a reservation beforehand.
Trail of the Ancients, Arizona/Colorado/New Mexico/Utah
Pairing natural beauty with Indigenous history, the Trail of the Ancients winds its way around the sun-drenched Four Corners region where Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico and Utah converge. Though connected by a shared history, each state’s portion of the route offers something different. In Arizona, visit Canyon de Chelly National Monument , one of the oldest continuously inhabited places in the United States, to see fifth-century C.E. pictographs painted onto canyon walls that rise as high as 1,000 feet. Crane your neck as you take in Shiprock , a Navajo sacred site central to their creation story, which rises abruptly from the New Mexican desert floor to a height taller than the Willis Tower. And in Utah, stretch your legs at Forrest Gump Point , a lonely stretch of U.S. Route 163 in Monument Valley where the film’s hero decides to finally stop running.
Perhaps most spectacular along the trail is Colorado’s Mesa Verde National Park . Home to an ancient cliffside metropolis built by Ancestral Puebloans around the 13th [5] century, Mesa Verde was the first national park dedicated to “preserve the works of man.” Its most striking site is surely the Cliff Palace , a 150-room building that was once home to roughly 100 people. National Park Service ranger and Laguna Pueblo woman T.J. Atsye once reflected about the Cliff Palace: “Even though we physically moved away, the spirits of my ancestors are still here. If you stop for a minute and listen, you can hear the children laughing and the women talking. You can hear the dogs barking and the turkeys gobbling. You can hear and feel the beat of the drums and the singing. You can smell the cooking fires. You can feel their presence, their warmth, their sense of community.”
Mount Washington Auto Road, New Hampshire
“THIS CAR CLIMBED MT. WASHINGTON,” proclaims a bumper sticker ubiquitous throughout New England. It’s a sign that the vehicle has summited the Northeast’s tallest mountain, an ascent of 4,600 vertical feet that climbs through the clouds and into blue sky, revealing panoramic views from the White Mountains to the Atlantic Ocean. Even during the winter months, when the road is closed to public traffic, aspiring automotive mountaineers can still enjoy a ride to the summit in the SnowCoach (a van with tracks for wheels), and Nordic ski or snowshoe down. But be sure to bundle up—last year, Mount Washington recorded the coldest wind chill in U.S. history of minus 108 degrees Fahrenheit.
The auto road is billed as “America’s oldest manmade attraction,” and its storied history is as much a draw as its natural beauty. Construction began on the road during the presidency of Franklin Pierce, with work completed during Lincoln’s first term. Over the years, the route developed a reputation as an automotive proving ground. The first timed journey to the summit saw an 1899 Stanley Locomobile post a then-blistering time of just over two hours, a record modern weekend warriors shatter on a daily basis in family minivans. Still, that initial time trial inspired one of the oldest auto races in America, the Mount Washington Hillclimb , which has been sporadically held along the road since 1904. But wannabe racers may have their work cut out for them: The current record time of 5 minutes and 28.67 seconds may be slightly harder to beat than the 1899 original.
Overseas Highway, Florida
In 1905, oil tycoon Henry Flagler announced his plans to build a railroad connecting Key West to the Florida mainland . When the line opened seven years later, the project once lampooned as “Flagler’s Folly” was hailed as the “Eighth Wonder of the World.” But the triumph would be short-lived. The 1935 Labor Day Hurricane struck with an intensity that would be unparalleled for the next half-century, washing away 40 miles of track and dooming the railway for good. The misfortune for train travelers nonetheless proved a boon for motorists: Florida purchased what was left of the infrastructure and repurposed it to create the Overseas Highway .
Today, the southernmost highway in the continental United States carries U.S. Route 1 over the turquoise waters of the Florida Keys via 42 low-slung bridges. Beneath the underpasses, the Lower 48’s largest coral reef offers some of the country’s best snorkeling, but be warned: Sightings of crocodiles and alligators may be better enjoyed from the driver’s seat. Those craving a wildlife adventure may want to seek out the Turtle Hospital , located at Mile Marker 48.5 on the Overseas Highway. Since its founding in 1986, the hospital has helped nurse over 3,000 sea turtles back to health, and the public is welcomed daily for guided educational tours .
