Visit Fjordlandet

A World Heritage Site, Vikings and rock-n-roll await you in the cathedral city of Roskilde.

History, culture and beautiful nature are in generous supply a short 25 minutes from Copenhagen, not to mention inviting restaurants where you can relax and soak up your experiences.

The history of Roskilde and the surrounding areas dates back to the Viking and Middle Ages. One of the main attractions is the royal tombs in Roskilde Cathedral , an impressive architectural gem that has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Roskilde is also a well-known destination for young people. RAGNAROCK museum offers interactive exhibitions on rock and pop music and youth culture, while the Viking Ship Museum , with its living historical workshops, is a delight for children. But Roskilde is also a modern city with a pedestrian zone filled with shops, restaurants and cafés .

If you are going during spring, you might even be able to bring some wild garlic home and cook with it later! This is a local’s favourite way to spend a spring day, and it is also considered one of the most fun things to do in Roskilde, Denmark. It is so tasty, and something I do every year. Just please make sure you don’t accidentally bring lily of the valley home instead of wild garlic as they can look quite similar, but lily of the valley is poisonous!

Boserup Forest is also a perfect place to go mountain biking for those of you who enjoy outdoor activities! You can find more information about Boserup Forest and its routes right here .

9 Top-Rated Tourist Attractions in Roskilde

Steeped in regal and Viking history, Roskilde should be high on your agenda of places to visit in Denmark. Take the train or drive about half an hour from Copenhagen , and you'll arrive at the burial place of kings, queens, and knights in the magnificent UNESCO World Heritage Site, Roskilde Cathedral. Their presence reminds visitors that during medieval times, Roskilde was the seat of monarchs and bishops and one of Northern Europe's most important cities.

Long before that, more than a thousand years ago, the Vikings founded Roskilde as a trading hub, and its most popular tourist attraction, the Viking Ship Museum, recalls those times.

But it's not all history, and some of the most exciting things to do here revolve around the city's active music scene. Explore the city's long past and vibrant present with our list of the top attractions in Roskilde.

Viking Ship Museum

The Viking Ship Museum (Vikingeskibsmuseet) on the banks of Roskilde fjord is one of Denmark's top tourist attractions . Dedicated to the history of seafaring and boat building in ancient and medieval times, it contains rare surviving examples of original Viking ships that were deliberately sunk at the harbor mouth to prevent raiders from attacking the city.

The museum consists of eight buildings with very different functions, including a shipyard where reconstructions of Viking ships and traditional Nordic wooden boats are built, and an activity center where adults and children can try out their skills at Viking Age crafts.

This truly is a must-see for all those fascinated by Viking times and culture, and a visit here is an easy day trip from Copenhagen . Guided tours are available in peak season.

Dominating the town, Roskilde Cathedral has been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site both for its architecture and for the tombs of almost 40 kings and queens of Denmark that it holds. These go back to the Viking Kings, Harold Bluetooth (d. 985) and his son, Sweyn Forkbeard (d. 1014), "Conqueror of England," and include Danish monarchs, commencing with Margarethe I (d. 1412), who ruled over three Nordic countries (Denmark, Norway, and Sweden). Frederik IX, who died in 1972, was initially buried in a chapel, but in 1985, his coffin was transferred to a mausoleum specially built outside the cathedral.

In the 1170s, construction of the present brick church began. It took more than a century to build and is one of Northern Europe's earliest examples of Gothic architecture .

Over the years, various additions have been made. The central nave is bordered by the North Tower Chapel , originally known as St. Siegfried's, and by the South Tower Chapel , which was endowed by Queen Margrethe I as the Bethlehem Chapel. You'll find the tombs in various funerary chapels, entered from the aisles.

The cathedral is one of Denmark's great national monuments and the central feature of the town.

Roskilde Cathedral - Floor plan map

For those who like music, this annual festival, first staged in 1971, is one of the biggest and oldest rock events in northern Europe. It runs from late June to early July, with various folk, rock, and pop concerts; film and video screenings; theatrical performances; and fringe events.

Around 80,000 rock fans converge here for the festival every year. About 180 bands represent all rock styles, and most of the major artists have played here, including the Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen, Eminem, Prince, Paul McCartney, and Stevie Wonder. In addition to the music, there are pop-up fashion boutiques and shops, as well as food trucks.

If popular music is your thing, near the festival grounds you can't miss the distinctive cantilevered building housing RAGNAROCK, a museum of pop, rock, and youth culture. With its interactive exhibits, you will not only hear but see and feel the story of music from the rock 'n' roll of the 1950s through 1980s pop, and into today's European music scene.

Roskilde hosts many other smaller festivals throughout the summer, including opera and outdoor classical concerts.

Necklace in Roskilde Museum

Exhibits in the Roskilde Museum are housed in two of the city's oldest historic houses - "Sukkerhuset" and "Liebes Gård." Although the focus is on history, the exhibits are 21 st -century, with engaging interactive features that tell the story of Roskilde through archaeological finds and a widely varied collection of other artifacts. The picture it gives of local life goes well beyond Roskilde's own history, encompassing the Viking era, Denmark's political past and present, even the role of religion in Danish life. The museum's Caféen Freunde is a good place for a lunch break.

Royal Mansion (Yellow Palace)

Roskilde Palace is a four-wing yellow Baroque building built between 1733 and 1736 on the site where the vicarage once stood. The Absalon Arch connects Roskilde Cathedral with the palace, which was once the residence of the Royal Family when they were passing through or attending royal funerals.

From 1835 to 1848 the Assembly of the Estates of the Realm of the Islands , who formulated a new Danish Constitution, was housed here. Today, there are two exhibitions on-site: the Museum of Contemporary Art and the Palace Wing . The garden is used for exhibitions, concerts, and other cultural events.

Address: Stændertorvet 3, Roskilde

Ledreborg Palace

An easy 20-minute drive from Roskilde brings you to magical Ledreborg Palace set amid superb Baroque gardens and grounds. Since 1739, the palace has been the home of the Holstein-Ledreborg family and is a fine example of 18th-century Scandinavian architecture and landscaping.

Within the palace, you can admire an impressive collection of paintings and furniture. The second floor has changed little since it was first created about 250 years ago. The old dungeon is particularly interesting, and be sure to stroll through the lovely grounds.

Traditional Viking boats in Roskilde harbor

Roskilde was a trade center in the Viking era, when nearly all transportation and commerce was by boat, so its position on the fjord was important, as was its central location.

Today, the harbor is still a busy place, with pleasure and fishing boats coming and going, a lovely place to stroll, ride a bicycle, or sit on a bench and enjoy the views—especially at sunset. There is a signposted route along the harbor, and you'll find cafés and restaurants, as well as ice-cream kiosks.

To see more of the harbor and fjord, take a lunch, tea-time, or dinner cruise on board the historic M/S Sagafjord, with a beautiful teak mahogany and brass interior. Or step back in time by sailing an authentic replica Viking ship or a traditional Nordic boat, which are the descendants of the Vikings' ships. The Viking Ship Museum is the only place in the world where you can sail in an authentic Viking ship.

Roskilde Town Hall

In the marketplace (Stændertorvet), south of the Roskilde Royal Mansion and in the center of town, you'll find the Town Hall, built around 1880 in Gothic style and designed by the architect O. Momme. The imposing tower dates to around 1500 and was originally the tower of St. Laurence's Church, the ruins of which can still be visited in a small museum beneath the market square.

Only one section of the church, dating from about 1125, has been excavated. To appreciate the full size of the original church, look for its outline in the pavement of the Stændertorvet. When the church was torn down during the Reformation, the tower was saved as a town watch tower, later being incorporated into the town hall.

Address: Stændertorvet 1, Roskilde

Reproduction Iron Age homes

The official name of the 106-acre archaeological open-air museum is the Centre for Historical-Archaeological Research and Communication , and it's located a few kilometers west of Roskilde.

The whole family will find a lot of things to do here as they tour replica homes and farms from the Iron, Stone, and Viking eras. Kids will enjoy trying on clothing typical of the times and learning everyday skills, such as carrying buckets on a shoulder yoke or grinding wheat into flour. All ages can learn how to spin wool into yarns and watch skilled artisans work in wood, leather, and metal.

Roskilde – A Practical Guide to Denmark’s Previous Capital City

Roskilde travel guide

Roskilde used to be the capital of Denmark. Despite losing that title to Copenhagen, it is still a city highly worth visiting, since there are many nice attractions in Roskilde – and it has developed into a city with many events and activities, particularly for young people.

Most people visit Roskilde as a day trip from Copenhagen; something we highly recommend. However, you can also stay a few days in Roskilde and get the full impression of the city. No matter what option you’re going for, be sure to check this Roskilde travel guide before going!

Facts about Roskilde

Roskilde is one of the oldest cities in Denmark. Already in the 10th century, it was an important port city, and with the establishment of Roskilde Cathedral in 1175 it only went in one direction.

It was the main Danish city for culture, trading and politics in the 12th and 13th centuries. It used to be the capital of Denmark, but after Copenhagen took over that role, most institutions also moved to Copenhagen.

Diseases and fires almost ruined Roskilde in the 17th and 18th centuries. By the end of the 1700s, Roskilde only had a few thousand inhabitants left. However, the population grew in the mid-19th century since a direct rail line opened between Roskilde and Copenhagen, only the second of its kind in Denmark.

Roskilde finally grew to its current size in the 20th century. Despite the location being completely ideal as a capital city, Roskilde is no longer an important city in regard to politics, and it is not a cultural center either – but it is a highly interesting city because of its history, architecture and the many entertaining opportunities, being a student city and being near Copenhagen.

Things to see in Roskilde

The main thing to see in the city is the Roskilde Cathedral . It is arguably one of the most important constructions in Denmark and by far the most interesting cathedral/church in the country.

Roskilde Cathedral is gigantic, and it is one of the earliest examples of the Nordic Brick Gothic style. Through almost a thousand years, it has been the resting place for the Danish royal family: 21 kings and 19 queens are buried here. Paintings and art inside the cathedral illustrate the history of Denmark. In 1995, Roskilde Cathedral was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site – ever since it has been a highly popular tourist attraction.

Another important attraction in Roskilde is Vikingeskibmuseet (The Viking Ship Museum) where you can learn more about the Vikings and their culture. Ships and other items are up for an exhibition, and it is an exciting place for adults as well as children.

Other nice museums in the city are the Roskilde Museum , which shows the history of the city itself, and Ragnarock , a modern and innovative musical museum.

You should also consider a visit to the Roskilde Monastery , one of the oldest and most meaningful monasteries in the country.

Best activities in Roskilde

If you wish to do some more active things in Roskilde, you have a few options too.

Roskilde Festival is the absolute highlight. This rock music festival is the largest in Northern Europe and it attracts big names every year. Some previous performers are Bob Dylan, Jackson Browne, Paul McCartney, Eric Clapton, Metallica, Guns N’Roses and several others. It takes place in the summer, usually around the last week of June / first week of July. Buy your ticket in advance, and bring a tent, a lot of money and some supplies since it lasts a full week.

But since Roskilde Festival is just once per year, there is a high chance you will arrive at some other point. If so, you can still get a nice, but more local experience, by visiting Gimle . It is the regional concert hall, and it is popular among young people. There are many local musicians performing here, and there is also a bar and a nightclub at the venue.

If you’re into ships, head to the port and eat out in some of the nearby restaurants. There are lots of activities here, and many local boat owners will be happy to show you their boats.

And of course, the central part of Roskilde is home to many stores where you can easily spend a few hours shopping. Prices can be a bit expensive, just like you would expect, but you can find many great things, such as typical Nordic items.

How to get there

Roskilde has a train station with connections to all the major cities in Denmark. Therefore, it is always easy to get in and out. You can reach Copenhagen (and Copenhagen Airport ) in less than an hour. Roskilde itself doesn’t have an international airport, so most passengers will fly to Copenhagen first.

Of course, there are also roads leading to Roskilde: 21, 14 and 6 being the main ones. You can easily drive there from any location in Denmark. With a central bus terminal, you can also take a bus to Roskilde from most cities and towns in Sealand.

Where to stay in Roskilde

In the central part of Roskilde, there is a limited amount of hotels but fortunately, the standard is quite high.

Zleep Hotel is the most central hotel in Roskilde, and we consider it the best place to stay since the prices are also very reasonable. The average price is 67€ per night. Officially, it is only a 3-star hotel, but it is very charming: Zleep Hotel is located in an elegant building from 1695, and it is just 300 meters away from Roskilde Cathedral. In other words, you can expect an authentic experience in Roskilde, and you will be right in the center.

An alternative is Scandic Roskilde Park. This hotel offers more facilities than Zleep Hotel, but it is located a bit south of the center, so public transport might be needed when getting around. The average price for a room is slightly higher, averaging 105€ per night.

Roskilde generally has more holiday apartments than it has hotels, so you might have luck finding a great deal on Airbnb or another site for short term holiday rentals.

Day trips from Roskilde

Roskilde itself is often visited as a day trip from Copenhagen.

But if we flip things around, Copenhagen is also an excellent day trip from Copenhagen. So if you happen to be in Roskilde for a vacation, it is obvious to visit the capital. To the many exchange students living in Roskilde, we recommend the same thing.

Other nice destinations near Roskilde are Helsingør (head to the northeast), Holbæk (northwest), Kalundborg (west) and the island of Lolland to the south.

If you don’t mind going a bit further, you can also consider a visit to Odense or even Aarhus. The trip will be a couple of hours, but it is absolutely doable as a day trip. There is a direct train connection to both of these cities from Roskilde, so it is quite easy to do.

To get more information, you can read about the most visited cities in Denmark and the best small towns and villages to visit .

Due to its rich history and interesting architecture, Roskilde is highly worth a visit. We recommend you to go, even if it is just for one day. Feel free to print out this article and bring it with you on your trip – and write a question below if you want to know anything specific about traveling to Roskilde!

Roskilde festival [ edit ].

roskilde tourist information

The legendary Roskilde Festival is still going strong despite over 50 years of sex, drugs and rock'n'roll! started by a group of friends in 1971 inspired by the Woodstock festival, it has grown from a few thousand guests in its first year, to over 115,000 visitors from all over the world, and is routinely sold out with over half the tickets sold outside of Denmark.

The festival takes place in late June, early July on Roskilde Dyreskueplads south of the city. To Get in there are several options; daily during the festival trains depart from Roskilde Station to the festival's own station inside the camping area (West) every 30 minutes for 20 kr. There are also shuttle buses from Roskilde Station to the camping area (East) all day during the festival. When arriving at the festival you exchange your ticket for an armband/bracelet which gives you access to both the camping area, and the stage area.

Many people show up a week before the music starts to get their tents up so they can sleep close to the stage area, and limit walking as much as possible as the camping area is huge! A good tip is securing a place as far from trees and fences as possible, since they in essence become one big urinal during the festival. If rain is forecast, you should also attempt to camp as far from the marked walkways, preferably on a slope, since mud quickly becomes and issue.

On the camping grounds there are several service areas with food stalls and supermarkets to stock up with eat & drink , some also have first aid, toilets and showers. Inside the stage area there are also many, many restaurants and bars - most of them with a theme, and some of them are really huge and elaborate. There are also many shops where you can buy necessities and other rubbish.

Music is playing from Thursday - Sunday and are usually varied, with some international headline acts, and much experimental and indie music and the smaller stages.

How to Visit Roskilde Denmark from Copenhagen + Things to Do

Just west of Copenhagen is the historic capital of Denmark, Roskilde, where Vikings and Rock-n-Roll meet. This historic town holds the famous annual Roskilde Festival, drawing over 100,000 music-lovers worldwide. But besides its famous music festival, it also has many other exciting attractions, including the UNESCO world heritage Roskilde cathedral and the Viking Museum. If you’re looking for a day trip from Copenhagen, Roskilde is the perfect place. It’s easy to get to, there’s loads to do, and easily navigated by bus, foot, or bike. So, here’s how to take the perfect day trip to Roskilde, Denmark!

Table of Contents

History of Roskilde Denmark

Roskilde dates back to the pre-Christian Viking Age and founded by King Ro thousands of years ago. It’s a part of the Most Ancient European Towns network, and one of the oldest cities in Denmark! Its name comes from the King ‘Ro’ and ‘kilde’ for springs, as it is also the city with the most number of springs north of the Alps. Now, it has the largest rail junction on the island of Zealand, Denmark’s largest island (which includes Copenhagen).

How to Get to Roskilde from Copenhagen

roskilde tourist information

The best and easiest way to get to Roskilde from Copenhagen is by train. Roskilde is 30 km west of Copenhagen and easily accessible with a 30 minute train ride. DSB (Danske Statsbaner), Denmark’s major rail company, runs a train to Roskilde almost every 10 minutes.

Roskilde Denmark Train Information

Starting Point : From Copenhagen, trains to Roskilde depart from most of the large train stations like Copenhagen Central Station (København H), Nørreport or Østerport, which are easily accessible from anywhere in the city. So no matter where you are staying, there is always a station closes to you.

Frequency : Trains leave for Roskilde roughly every 10 minutes during peak times and every 20 minutes during off-peak hours.

Travel Time : The journey takes about 25 to 30 minutes.

Ticket Price: One-way standard ticket to Roskilde from Copenhagen costs 58 DKK during peak hours and 46.40 DKK during off peak hours using a Rejsekort. It costs 60 DKK with a standard single ticket from DSB.

Train Coaches: Unless you buy a first class train ticket, you cannot sit in the first coach. Make sure you sit in any of the other cars where standard ticket passengers sit.

Paying for the Train

You can pay for the train in three ways: buying a single ticket, using a Rejsekort card, or having a tourist card like the Copenhagen Card.

Rejsekort vs. DSB

You can buy a single standard ticket directly from DSB on their website , on their app, from ticket machines, or at the DSB ticket counter. You can also use the DSB app to purchase digital tickets. This is also the same ticket you pay for when you use a top-uppable transit card like the Rejsekort. Both methods cost roughly the same—60 DKK and 58 DKK. The difference is that if you travel during off peak times with the Rejsekort, you get a 20% discount off all fares. You can see the hours here . This saves you about $3.50 roundtrip, which is nice!

You can get the Rejsekort Anonymous card at any main train station at the information or ticket stall. Read this blog for more information on how to use and pay for public transportation in Copenhagen.

Buy a Single Ticket Here

Tourist Cards

You can also “pay” for the train to Roskilde using a tourist attraction card like the Copenhagen Card . These cards include admission and public transport for many different attractions, which include the public transportation to Roskilde. So, you don’t pay for any additional tickets. This means that you can hop on and off the train worry-free!

My First Impressions of Roskilde

roskilde tourist information

Immediately after stepping out of the train station, it’s apparent that Roskilde is a much more calm and family friendly city than Copenhagen. There are lots of single family homes, which you only see on the outskirts of Copenhagen. It’s very calm, people are relaxed, and there’s lots of space to run or bike around. If it wasn’t so cold when I went, it’d be the perfect seaside town for a getaway! There’s also much less foot traffic in general, which I liked! A nice change of pace from the bustle of Copenhagen.

Getting Around Roskilde

You can easily get around Roskilde by bus, foot, or bike. There are buses running throughout the city and you can pay for it using the DOT app, Rejsekort, or getting a City Pass. Personally, I think biking is the best way to get around. It’s fast, convenient, there are bike stands everywhere, and you don’t have to wait for a bus to come! If you don’t know how to bike in Denmark, no worries, I have you covered. Read this blog for all the information you need on riding a bike in Denmark.

You can use the Donkey Republic bike sharing app to rent bikes for the day or by the minute. Read my guide on how to rent a bike in Denmark here . Additionally, walking is great to get around the downtown area, but a bus or bike is best for getting to the marina or attractions North of the train station area.

Tip : The train station and main shopping area of Roskilde is on a hill. If you go North to the Viking Museum or marina, you go down a slope. It’s super fun to bike down and feel the wind in your face. However, it’s terrible when you have to go back up… I recommend either busing back to the train station or biking until the hill starts to incline and walk the rest of the way up. It’s quite steep.

Best Things to Do in Roskilde

Now the fun part! Here are the top things to do in Roskilde on your day trip:

Roskilde Cathedral

Viking ship museum.

  • Roskilde Harbor
  • Downtown + Greyfriairs Cemetery

roskilde tourist information

Price : 70 DKK (~$11)

Hours : Opening Hours Vary, See Website Calendar

Roskilde Cathedral is probably the most famous site to visit in Roskilde, besides the Roskilde Festival. It is Denmark’s royal burial church with over 30 graves of Danish Kings and Queens. It was built around 1200 and was the first Gothic church in Scandinavia. The architecture is stunning with Gothic pointed arches and vaulted ceilings, and beautiful brick walls. You can find and see the most famous Danish king’s tomb here, as well as an astrological clock, and numerous royal tombs with life-size statues. In 1995, it was awarded the title of UNESCO World Heritage Site for its outstanding architecture and lasting authenticity.

It’s about a 12 minute walk from the train station or a 3 minute bike ride. There’s also a bus you can take to get closer to the cathedral (you ride one stop). In the cathedral, there’s a museum on the second floor that’s sort of hidden. The museum is up a small set of stairs to the left of the staircase leading to the second floor. Definitely don’t miss going to the second floor and taking in the church views from higher up. The astrological clock also rings every hour, which is cool to witness if lucky! There are free toilets as well.

I absolutely loved this museum and would go to Roskilde just to visit it—it’s that beautiful! The organ is stunning and the architecture is amazing. There are so many chapels and vaults to see as well, it’s definitely worth the price. Although, the staff member was so kind and let me in for free 45 minutes before closing. If there’s anything you do in Roskilde, let it be this.

Explore the fascinating and integral part of the Scandinavian world through Vikings and their well-preserved ships. Vikings helped found Scandinavia, sailing thousands of years ago along the Atlantic Sea. Their ships are an important part of their culture and lifestyle and without ships, there would be no Vikings.

The Viking Ship Museum sits in the Roskilde Harbor, north of the train station. You can bike or bus to the museum, but I recommend biking as you bike down this long hill that includes nice scenery. It’s so fun going down a fast hill! The museum itself includes an outdoor exhibit that is free to explore. Outside, there are many replica Viking ships and different exhibits to check out, including marine and wood biology. Inside the museum you’ll find 5 preserved Viking ships and all about their stories and preservation methods.

Personally, I think this is a great place for kids. There are so many interactive exhibits (indoor and outdoor) and plenty of space to run around. There’s even a playground next to the museum! If you’ve seen a Viking ship already (for example, the Viking Museum in Stockholm), then I don’t think it’s necessary to pay to go into the museum. Unless, you’re a lover of archaeology and Vikings. The outdoor portion has fun information tablets about the replica ships and the wood biology, which was great to read about.

HOWEVER , what most people come here for is the Viking ship cruise where you sail on a Viking ship in the harbor. This is only available during the summer, and the ticket for the boat includes admission to the museum. I wish I got to take a sail, but it wasn’t available when I went in March. It’s not necessary to buy tickets in advance; you can get them at the door.

Roskilde Havn (Harbor)

roskilde tourist information

If you’re at the Viking Ship Museum, then you’re already at the harbor! The harbor opens into the Roskilde Fjord and it stretches quite far into nature preserves and houses on both sides. There’s a marina with tons of sail boats, as well as waking or swimming piers jutting into the water. Besides the museum, there’s also a cafe and restaurant on the water in case you get hungry. But, you can also pack your own food and have a picnic on the grass in warmer months.

I think swimming is the most popular thing to do in the harbor, especially in the summer months. But even in March, with 40F weather, people were still jumping into the water for a quick cold plunge. There are toilets, showers, and BBQ areas at the harbor which makes it the perfect summer spot. But if you can’t swim, it’s a nice area to take a stroll and enjoy the views (given that it’s not raining, haha). It was nice to walk around after enjoying parts of the museum, and I saw lots of people enjoying the harbor either swimming, running, or walking.

Downtown Roskilde

roskilde tourist information

Just behind the Roskilde Cathedral is the main street for shopping, entertainment, and eating in Roskilde. The main shopping area connects the train station and cathedral, so you’ll walk or bike past many shops while commuting. There are tons of little boutiques, cafes, and restaurants that you can pop into for a souvenir or snack. Sometimes music buskers play on the street. The entire street is pedestrian and bikers only, so you don’t have to worry about cars. There’s also the Roskilde Museum and the old city hall that you can look into if interested.

This little hub was kind of dead when I went on a Sunday in March, and there weren’t many people out and about. Most of the stores were closed, as well. But it was still nice to bike through and envision how popular it would be in the summer months!

Tip : Definitely check out the Greyfriars Cemetery, which is right in front of the train station facing the main street. It’s a cemetery, but it looks more like a park! The entrance has this long walking path lined with trees and it’s so beautiful.

The cultural district of Roskilde, with the popular Ragnarock Museum and its cool architecture. Its nickname is “Rock City” and is right next to the permanent home of the Roskilde Festival. There’s plenty of street art, microbreweries, cafes, and restaurants and places to sit to enjoy your food. If you’re interested, go to the Ragnarock Museum which is a museum about the Roskilde Festival and rock and roll. Personally, I would just go to see the cool yellow building, as I’m not that interested in learning about the Roskilde Festival. But it’s a cool artsy area to have a beer with some friends and enjoy the weather.

Tips for Visiting Roskilde

Here are some things I would do differently for a day trip to Roskilde Denmark:

  • Don’t go on a Sunday: A lot of places like cafes, restaurants, and shops are closed. So if there’s a particular cafe you want to try, go on any other day of the week! The Roskilde church also has less open hours on Sunday due to Sunday service, so it’s less flexible to work around.
  • Go when its warm: Roskilde was still nice during late March, but it would be stunning in the late spring or summer. There’s less crowds (which is a bonus if you don’t like crowds) during winter, but it doesn’t have the same vibes.

And some things to check before you go are:

  • Major Danish holidays : It would suck to go during a holiday and find everything closed. Save yourself the heartbreak and check beforehand! Big ones include Easter Sunday + Monday, Whit Sunday + Monday, and Constitution Day.
  • Attraction website for openings : Sometimes the hours may change depending on construction, events, etc.
  • The weather: It may be raining or sunshine, so prepare and dress accordingly!

Have a Great Time in Roskilde Denmark!

Explore outside of Copenhagen and enjoy the small town vibes of Roskilde. Walk through downtown, check out the cathedral, Viking museum, and harbor. There’s so much culture and history in this small town, it might surprise you! Luckily, it’s only a quick 30 minute train ride from Copenhagen and can be a great half or full day trip. Don’t forget to check opening hours for the attractions and shops you want to visit, and try to go in the warmer months. Happy travels!

Roskilde City

Roskilde is the perfect detour for visitor to Copenhagen

Roskilde is a very old and important city close to Copenhagen. Roskilde including highlights like Roskilde Cathedral and a remarkable Viking museum, close to the beautiful Roskilde Fjord. The city also offers a cosy shopping street and regarding the many connections from Copenhagen Centre by rail, Roskilde is the perfect detour within 45 min. from Copenhagen.

Roskilde is the largest rail junction and traffic centre on Zealand, and its development has been stimulated by proximity to Copenhagen. The first connection to Copenhagen by Danish rail was invented in 1847. Today Roskilde is a very important transport connection point, with major rail and road connections that link Sweden with Germany via the bridge and tunnel systems across the Great Belt (1997–98) and The Sound (2000).

The city hosts several institutions of higher learning and research, including Roskilde University built in 1n 1972, and Risø National Laboratory (1958), and many of Roskilde’s traditional industries have now been replaced by more research-oriented business.

Here are the 20 best things to do in Roskilde, Denmark.

1) Have a good time at the Roskilde Festival.

Roskilde Festival

The Roskilde Festival is one of Europe’s largest music festivals, with around 100 bands performing over five days.

It attracts more than 100,000 visitors annually and allows local residents to showcase their talents by running various cultural events throughout the city.

Thanks to its diverse line-up, the festival also has an international reputation, featuring artists from all genres.

The Roskilde Festival features international headliners and boasts Denmark’s largest camping area.

It’s an excellent opportunity to discover new bands and artists, drink craft beers and meet people worldwide.

2) Visit the Viking Museum in Roskilde.

Viking Museum in Roskilde

In 1957, the Viking Museum was dedicated to Roskilde and Scandinavia’s ancient history.

It aims to bring visitors closer than ever before to the Vikings by focusing on their lives and experiences.

The museum features interactive displays that recreate life during the Bronze Age, Iron Age, Viking Period, and Middle Ages.

You can even experience what it was like to be tried at a court in the Middle Ages or participate in a reenactment of a 17th-century witch trial.

The Viking Museum hosts special exhibitions to learn more about Viking ships or traditional costumes.

Don’t forget to check out their library, which is open every day from 12 noon until 4 pm.

3) Explore Roskilde Cathedral.

Roskilde Cathedral

Roskilde Cathedral is one of Denmark’s most visited attractions . It has the country’s most giant cathedral tower and some of Scandinavia’s finest examples of Romanesque architecture.

The cathedral was built between the 12th and 13th centuries after Bishop Absalon captured Roskilde from the Wends, a Slavic tribe that inhabited the area.

It stands where Roskilde’s first church was built by Ansgar, an Anglo-Saxon missionary who arrived in Denmark in 826 to spread Christianity.

The original wooden structure burned down three years later, but reconstruction began soon afterward under Bishop Albrik, who founded the city of Slagelse nearby.

Visitors can climb to the top of his bell tower for impressive city views . The church contains monuments to Denmark’s Monarchs, including Christian IV, buried here.

It also houses  Roskilde’s shrine , which dates back to the 12th century and survived a fire in 1794 that destroyed most of the cathedral’s other treasures.

4) Take a guided walking tour of Roskilde.

Roskilde is a rich historical city, and there’s no better way to discover it than by taking advantage of the guided tours on offer.

Several different themed tours, including architectural tours, take you on a journey across the city through various periods of its history. You can also learn more about the Vikings and visit their ships, shops, and homes.

Every Friday at 3 pm from April until September, the City Walk tour provides an easy-to-follow insight into Roskilde’s architectural highlights.

It starts outside Den Gamle By restaurant, where the guide will share interesting facts about some of Roskilde’s most famous buildings, such as the Roskilde Museum, Havreholm Slot, and Frijsenborg Slot.

5) Take a boat trip on Roskilde Fjord.

Roskilde Fjord is a peaceful stretch of water that runs inland from the North Sea and separates Zealand from the smaller island of Funen.

It’s a great place to take a boat trip and explore some of Denmark’s most picturesque villages, particularly those that have been transformed into popular holiday resorts such as Gilleleje, Hornbæk, and Tisvildeleje.

The fjord is also famous for its oyster beds, supplying some of the country’s best restaurants with fresh seafood during summer.

In fact, it hosts several annual food festivals, including Smag på Fyn, Den Fynske Oysterfestival, and Ost & Fisk. The latter takes place in late April and uniquely celebrates all things to do with oysters.

6) Consider camping.

Camping is a popular activity in Denmark during the summer months, and there are plenty of campsites to choose from.

The closest to Roskilde city center is DK Camping & Hyttegård, which offers space for campers, mobile homes, and pitches for tents across its 13 hectares (32 acres) of land.

It’s home to several amenities that will make you stay more comfortable, including playgrounds, toilets, and showers, a kiosk where you can buy supplies, WiFi, internet access, and even entertainment such as bingo and discos.

7) Walk the town hall and tower of St. Laurence in Roskilde.

St. Laurence Church in Roskilde is the tallest building in the city and dates back to around 1160.

If you climb its tower, you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views across the surrounding landscape. There’s also a fascinating museum housed within its walls that explores many aspects of Denmark’s history.

8) The Old City Hall of Roskilde.

Most of Roskilde’s historical action took place on its open market square.

At the center of this is the tall, gilded spire of the Old City Hall. Towers above everything else are in quaint disrepair, like an aging medieval queen wearing her most pleasing crown for one last night at the ball.

It had survived several devastating fires throughout history and once housed a town hall where Danish monarchs were crowned when they visited the city.

9) Visit the royal palace in Roskilde.

Former Royal Mansion

Roskilde Royal Palace is another of the city’s great monuments that date back to around 1736 and is situated close to the cathedral and market square.

It was home to many Danish monarchs over the centuries, including King Christian IV and Queen Margrethe II.

It has been transformed into a museum where you can learn about their fascinating lives.

A guided tour will cost money, but you can also take a self-guided audio tour for free.

10) Take a boat trip from Roskilde Quay.

Roskilde Quay on the south side of town is lined with restaurants like Kong Hans Kælder, bars such as Cafe Biografen Riechers, and cafes that serve light meals, coffee, and cakes.

This is one of the best places in Denmark to sit outside with a cold drink and people-watch as you enjoy a scenic boat trip across Roskilde Fjord.

11) Explore The Land of Legends theme park.

Denmark is home to many myths and legends, such as those surrounding the characters of Hamlet and Mother Gerd, and this theme park brings these enchanting tales to life with a host of themed attractions that will delight children and adults alike.

You’ll be able to see model dinosaurs in Dino World, visit Little Red Riding Hood’s cottage, take a boat ride on Lake Arthur, meet Odin and Thor inside Valhalla Castle, fly like Jack Frost over winter wonderland, and much more.

12) Take a look at the Yellow Palace.

The Yellow Palace in the center of Roskilde is an art museum dedicated to modern Danish artists, including Jens Ferdinand Willumsen, Svend Wiig Hansen, and Berit Mathiesen.

It’s close to the cathedral, market square, and royal palace, so that you can visit all four monuments in one day.

13) Ledreborg Palace.

Ledreborg Palace

Located in Lejre, 25 miles west of Roskilde city center, Ledreborg Palace is another impressive royal property open to the public.

It was built in 1740-1745 and styled after a French chateau, but if you’re planning a visit, you’ll need to check its opening times first as they change quite frequently.

Events held here throughout the year may affect these times, so it’s best to check their website for updates.

14) Take a trip to Frederiksborg Palace.

Frederiksborg Palace was built in the early 17th century as a royal residence for King Christian IV but is currently known as one of Denmark’s most important art galleries.

The palace was home to Queen Margrethe II; it became a museum and UNESCO World Heritage Site.

It also hosts regular exhibitions related to the royal family.

You can enjoy up-close within its sumptuous interior spaces, each adorned with fine furnishings and artwork from different periods in Danish history.

The Royal Receptions Rooms contain some of the most important works of 17th-century Dutch and Danish art, including paintings by Rembrandt.

It also hosts the Royal Stables Museum, where you can see some of the coaches used by previous monarchs on official occasions.

Follow this up with a visit to the nearby Rosenborg Castle, home to an impressive treasury full of crown jewels and fine silverware.

History of Roskilde

Roskilde was an important place during the Viking Age and is today one of Denmark’s oldest cities. From the 11th century until 1443, it was the capital of Denmark. According to old documents, Roskilde was founded in the 980s by King Harald Bluetooth. Roskilde Cathedral was completed in 1275 and is the second church on the site.

The Reformation brought Roskilde’s development to an abrupt stop as religious institutions disappeared. The city then suffered fire and destruction and only saw development again in the 1870s and 1880s as the rail network was established and Roskilde became an important hub.

Roskilde Today

Today IT and administrative services are the biggest industries. There are a number of research industries and higher education centres here, too. Tourism is an important industry.

Therefore, in my many years of traveling the world, I’ve seen myself returning to these travel resources repeatedly. My travel planning resource in one zip file is an easy-to-use printable planner that comes with tips that helps you plan your travels during the planning stage, a pre-flight checklist, an itinerary planner, and so on.

4. Visit the Roskilde Museum

Roskilde Museum

Roskilde Museum lies in the city’s oldest historic buildings: “Liebes Gard” and “Sukkerhuset.” It has interactive features to engage visitors on the history of Roskilde based on a wide variety of artifacts, including archaeological findings. These findings depict more than just the local life and history of the city.

They also give important hints about Denmark’s past and present political situation, the Viking warriors’ life, and Christianity’s influence among the Danes. Once visitors complete touring the museum, they can take a break at the Cafeen Freunde. They offer authentic Danish drinks and meals for a savory lunch break.

5. Feel like a King at the Royal Mansion

Roskilde Palace

Built between 1733 and 1736, the Royal Mansion or the Roskilde Palace features a four-wing yellow Baroque building. The Roskilde Cathedral is connected to the palace via the iconic Absalon Arch.

The palace was once the official residence of Denmark’s kings and queens when attending royal funerals or passing through the city.

The palace also housed the Assembly of the Estates of the Realm of the Islands from 1835 to 1848. Today, it showcases two exhibitions: the Palace Wing and the Museum of Contemporary Art.

6. Have a Magical Experience at the Ledreborg Palace

Ledreborg Palace

It takes 20 minutes of an easy drive from Roskilde town center to reach the glorious Ledreborg Palace. It demonstrates the typical Scandinavian architecture and landscaping of the 18th century.

The palace has been the home of the Holstein-Ledreborg family since 1739. The palace has an extensive collection of furniture and paintings from different ages and countries. There is an old dungeon within the vicinity and lovely gardens and landscapes for relaxation.

Hold up! Have you thought about the importance of travel insurance?

Remember this:  anything can happen. Travel is fun, but your health is more important; thus, I always, always, always recommend getting insured during the duration of your trip. I have benefitted from having one multiple times, and it has been covered for thousands of euros!

The latest one is not necessarily “health” related – it was during the peak of the unspeakable terrible C that consumed the world. I was living in Vietnam when I received an email from SafetyWing (my travel insurance) that if I want they’ll fly be back home to Finland as the world goes through a global emergency alert. I flew back fully covered, and dealing with  SafetyWing  was a breeze despite the roar of people in contact with them trying to get back home.

I can’t highly recommend them enough. Otherwise, I rarely get sick; hence I don’t always need to head to a hospital, but knowing that I have travel insurance makes me feel safe at the very least.

Read my post about  why you should get travel insurance  for more information. Otherwise, you can get a free quote from  SafetyWing  – they’re the best, in my opinion.

7. Explore Roskilde Havn and Fjord

Roskilde Havn

During the Viking regime, nearly all commerce and transportation relied on boats, and Roskilde was an important trading center. The city’s central location and position on the fjord were of strategic importance for the Vikings.

The harbor remains a busy spot today, not just as a fishing hub. It has also become a renowned tourist attraction and an ideal place for Roskilde camping.

Many locals and visitors come here to sit on the benches while enjoying the ocean views and the stunning fjord. Other everyday activities here are jogging, cycling, and other morning exercises.

8. Visit the Roskilde Town Hall & St. Laurence Tower

Roskilde Old Town Hall

Built around 1880, the Roskilde Town Hall lies in the city’s center, south of the Royal Mansion. It features Gothic architecture, and its majestic towers date to around 1500.

The towers are remnants of St. Laurence’s Church. Visitors can check out its ruins in a small museum beneath the market square.

9. Explore the Land of Legends

Also known as the Center for Historical-Archaeological Research and Communication, The Land of Legends is an open-air museum covering 106 acres. It lies a few kilometers west of Roskilde. Visitors will find replicas of farms and homes from the Stone, Iron, and Viking periods.

Children can learn about typical activities during these ancient times, such as grinding wheat into flour or carrying buckets on a shoulder yoke. Others can experience spinning wool into yarns or observe skilled artisans work in metal, leather, and wood.

There you have it. Those are just some of the best things to do in Roskilde, which every traveler should try for a more meaningful and fun-filled experience.

What are my favorite travel must-haves?

As a frequent traveler, I’ve learned a lot throughout my years of travel, and there are five items that I always carry with me regardless of where I go and how long the trip is. Here are my five travel must-haves!

  • Warm packable jacket  – I always carry a light jacket, even when heading to warm countries. There hasn’t been a time I never used it, especially in airports and planes.
  • Transparent toiletry bag  – I often bring a carry-on if I’m only traveling within Europe for a few days. Life is so much easier to go through security checks with a transparent toiletry bag.
  • Kindle Paperwhite  – I love a good read and always take my Kindle everywhere. It keeps me entertained during long flights and waiting times.
  • Powerbank  – I don’t know how I could travel without one! Having a power bank saved me a ton since I carry a lot of electronic devices with me.
  • Travel Adapter  – I never leave my luggage without a travel adapter! I carry one with me all the time. It is just one of that travel-must haves that doesn’t hurt to have in your bag at all times.
