The Ultimate Nassau Bahamas Travel Guide (From A Local’s Point of View)
If you’re thinking of traveling to Nassau in The Bahamas, here’s a local’s guide to Nassau, Bahamas. Whether it’s crystal clear waters, relaxation, culture, authentic Bahamian food; here’s everything you need to know to start planning your trip.
What To Know Before Traveling To Nassau Bahamas
First off, Nassau is ONE island in an archipelago of over 700 islands, rocks and cays and if your discovery of The Bahamas starts there, that definitely shouldn’t be the end all be all. When flying to Nassau, the best airport is LPIA (Lynden Pindling International Airport) which offers both international and inter island transportation. The best time to travel would depend on the traveler but peak season usually starts around the winter months until the end of Spring break and off season starts during the spring/summer months more particularly around hurricane season.
The ideal length of stay can vary but I recommend a long weekend into a week (4-7 days) OR you can definitely consider including Nassau as a stop if you’re on a Caribbean cruise.
Other things to note, currency used is 1:1 with the USD dollar (not a US territory) and you should also budget for VAT (value added tax) which is around 10% or greater. I would recommend budgeting spending $50-100 dollars a day depending on your itinerary.
Where To Stay in Nassau, Bahamas
If you’re looking for a more luxury stay, check out the Grand Hyatt Baha Mar or SLS Baha Mar, The Island House and Ocean’s Club, Four Seasons. Budget friendly choices are Comfort Suites Paradise Island which offers a day pass per guest to Atlantis. Other budget friendly options are CourtYard By Marriott, Holiday Inn and more. For all inclusive resorts, check out the newly reopened Sandals Royal Bahamian, Breezes Resort & Spa, Warwick Paradise Island and Hotel RIU Paradise Island.

- Downtown Nassau
- Baha Mar Blvd
- Cable Beach

Transportation
Getting around Nassau is as easy as renting a car, scooter or hailing a taxi. Public transport is available in the form of jitneys/buses that run from about sunrise to sunset; bus fare is under $2 USD. You can find updated taxi fares HERE .
Where To Eat in Nassau, Bahamas
So in the sense of authentic Bahamian food, you most often have to leave the resort but there are some resorts that have Bahamian restaurants attached to them (i.e. Comfort Suites and Crusoe’s Restaurant). The most popular Bahamian delicacy is CONCH that’s prepared in many different ways . One of the most central, tourist friendly areas to find Bahamian food is Arawak Cay/Fish Fry area . Some of my favorite stalls/restaurants to eat at are:
- Deep Creek Restaurant
For authentic Bahamian breakfast, The Cricket Club (across the street from Arawak Cay) is a popular spot for locals (try different types of souse, boiled fish, stewed fish) and there’s always Nesbitts which serves my favorite hangover remedy/breakfast food: sheep tongue souse with a side of Johnny cake. For conch salad, Arawak Cay is a popular spot but another one of my favorites is Dino’s Gourmet Conch Stand which is a little further down West Bay Street. For lunch, dinner; one of my favorites is Crusoe’s Restaurant over Paradise Island.
@bahamianista if you got a hangover, this will cure it for ya 😋 #souse #bahamianfood #caribbeantiktok #bahamianrestaurant #thingstodointhebahamas ♬ Bahamian Music – Sunshine Steel
Nightlife & Things To Do
In terms of bars and nightlife, Covid restrictions are easing according to local news outlets to allow for more outdoor events but nightlife is definitely buzzing over Paradise Island and in the hotels. Some recommended spots are:
- Sky Bar Baha Mar
- Bond Night Club
- Monkey Bar (Baha Mar)
- Jazz Bar (Baha Mar)
- The Pub (Downtown Nassau)
- Senor Frogs
Subscribe to PinPoint Bahamas’ weekly newsletter where they outline varied events, festivals and things to do in Nassau, Bahamas.
Cultural Events, Festivals In The Bahamas
Important dates to remember would include both national Junkanoo parades held on Boxing Day (December 26th) and New Years Day. There’s also Bahamas Carnival as well.
My favorite beaches involve very little to no people and usually that can mean a beach further away from the resorts and bustling downtown Nassau, Bahamas. My top 3 are definitely Nirvana Beach, Orange Hill Beach and Love Beach but here’s a list of a few others.
- Goodman’s Bay
- Cabbage Beach (over Paradise Island)
- Saunder’s Beach
- South Beach (when tide is low)
Things To Do and See in Nassau, Bahamas
From tours to cultural sights and attractions , there’s a good amount of things to do in Nassau. Some of my favorites include going to see the famous swimming pigs in Exuma , boat trips to Rose Island or Pearl Island , food tours.
Historical Sites
- Pompey & Parliament Square
- Nassau Public Library
- Straw Market
- The Queen’s Staircase
- Fort Charlotte, Fort Montague, Fort Fincastle
- The Cloisters (Paradise Island)
Also check out this list of free and inexpensive things to do in Nassau Bahamas.
What To Pack // Packing Essentials
When packing, it really depends on the time of year you’re going to visit Nassau. During the winter months, it’s advisable to travel with a sweater or two, long denim because the weather can often mimic South Florida weather and that means when there’s a cold front it’s sometimes dipping into the low 60s. However during Spring, summer months, its definitely hotter (upwards to the 90’s Fahrenheit). You definitely need sunscreen, a good pair of shades, a hat, durable shoes/sandals ( my favorite are Teva’s ) and a fun waterproof electronic is necessary for underwater and beach pics like the Insta360 OneX2.

Why You Don’t Need a Nassau Rental Car on This Itinerary
Being an island, you’ll find that renting a car is popular. However, you don’t need to rent a car in Nassau to get around, especially on this Nassau itinerary. If you don’t know how to drive on the left-hand side of the road, renting a car should be avoided.
If you stay at the suggested downtown hotel or other downtown location, you can rely on walking, taxis or the public bus (The Jitney) to save money from taxis, and water taxis for most of your transportation needs.
Discover Nassau visually while learning the 15 things to know before you go to Nassau , from getting there, getting around, the best time to go, where to stay, top things to do in Nassau, Nassau budget tips, and more to plan your first time travel to Nassau.

Your 4 Days in Nassau
On New Providence Island, Nassau is the capital of The Bahamas, a country comprising of 700 islands that span 100,000 square miles across the Caribbean Sea. Since its founding by the British in 1670, Nassau has been burnt down, rebuilt, renamed and colonized, been the center of wars, pirates, slavery, international trade, and tourism.
The “gateway to The Bahamas”, New Providence and Paradise Island offer not just world-class resorts, award-winning beaches, colorful marine wildlife, and epic outdoor and water sports. Part of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network, Nassau also holds art, culture, history, cuisine, festivals, shopping, and friendly locals.
Get ready to explore Nassau and realize why it is the ideal vacation destination for tropical paradise, relaxation, and diversity of exciting activities.
This 4 Day Itinerary Pro Tips
This itinerary assumes:
- Staying near downtown, as in my suggested Nassau downtown hotel to capture activities by foot and reduce taxi costs.
- Arriving no later than 11am to be able to start same day.
- Traveling in the peak season for longest daylight hours and the best weather for walking and enjoying outdoor activities.
- Walking considerably on concrete, dirt paths and beaches. Wearing comfortable walking shoes is ideal.
After checking in, or checking bags, at your hotel, walk to Arawak Cay to enjoy a fish fry lunch and daiquiri.
Pop into Ardastra Gardens & Wildlife Conservation Center to observe the colorful birds, animals and fauna, followed by a stroll through the Botanical Gardens for shade and greenery.
Wrap it up with a visit to John Watling’s Distillery for rum tasting or signature cocktails on the patio at sunset.
Now you’re ready to head back to the hotel for a brief change and casual dinner out at Tiki Bikini Hut on Junkanoo Beach just steps from your hotel.
Nassau Pro Tip
They drive on the left-hand side of the road in Nassau. Locals know how to drive on the left-hand side, but many tourists don’t. Also, locals may not always stop for pedestrians. Practice caution walking along and crossing streets.
Enjoy a complimentary shuttle pick up at your hotel from Stuart Cove Dive Shop to whisk you away for your morning SCUBA, or SNUBA, aquatic adventure.
Finishing by noon, take advantage of the shuttle and bypass going back to your hotel and opt for a free ride to Paradise Island instead.
Depart the shuttle at the Paradise Island Beach Club where you can grab a savory seafood lunch and local Sands beer at the outdoor friendly and fun Cabbage Beach Bistro before you walk steps down the public entrance to vast white, sandy Cabbage Beach for a nice siesta.
Before sundown, take a stroll back towards Marina Village with a stop to marvel at The Cloisters , the remnants of a 14th-century Augustinian monastery imported from Europe by William Randolph, and flowers overlooking the water.
Finish your walk at Marina Village for dinner, or shop to bide your time until you can get free evening entry to Marine Habitat at Atlantis and dine within the Atlantis complex.
Since you received a free ride to Paradise Island, you can splurge for a taxi back to your hotel.
Start day 3 in Nassau with a short morning lounge on Junkanoo Beach before walking to Harbour Central Marina and meet your Green Cay Snorkel with Sea Turtles excursion group for a couple of hours of boating and snorkeling with sea turtles and colorful fish you will never forget.
Epic Bahamian marine adventures build up an appetite. Luckily, you’ll arrive back at the marina at lunch time and a short walk to The Green Parrot for lunch on their waterfront, outdoor patio.
Don’t fill up on drinks, however. Save that for locally-made craft brews over a board game at Rip Ty’d Taproom a few minutes’ walk away.
Leave for Rum Cake Factory for tasting and buying gifts, followed by East Bay shopping downtown as you make your way back to your hotel.
Have the energy for a night out? Then call the taxi and head to Baha Mar Resort for a night of music, dining, drinks and trying your luck at the casino tables.
Enjoy another morning of relaxation at Junkanoo to save up your energy for the day’s walking.
Leave in time to meet your Nassau Bites and Sites Food & Cultural Tour group downtown for a 3 hour yummy food tour while learning about Nassau.
When finished on your gastro and cultural tour downtown, see if you have the energy to walk up Queen’s Staircase to walk around Fort Fincastle and see the views from Bennet’s Hill, Nassau’s highest point. Note: for safety reasons, visit only during the day time.
If you rather, you could opt to stay downtown and wrap up the last of your shopping at The Straw Market (closes at 5pm), before wandering back to the hotel to change for a last night out of dining near your hotel and a cocktail at the Sky Bar atop Margaritaville Resort .

Nassau, Bahamas
Once known for being a pirate stronghold for English Privateers who abandoned the Union Jack to instead hoist the Jolly Roger, Nassau is a Caribbean city with an illustrious history. However, today Nassau caters to a much different crew. Visitors from all over the world venture to the Bahamas for its sun-soaked beaches, crystal waters and rest and relaxation. Combine this with amazing restaurants, bountiful shops and salt-water fun and you are destined for the ultimate in tropical paradises.
While the Bahamas offer serene beaches and sun-drenched skies, there are a lot of opportunities to mix in some adventure with relaxation.
It is no secret that the Caribbean is remarkable for snorkeling and scuba diving. However, the waters around the Bahamas hold hidden secrets that makes it stand above the other islands. Due to trade routes and boat traffic, the Bahamian coast is riddled with shipwrecks that you can see first-hand! There are different levels of dives: shallow, moderate and deep, each growing progressively more technical. Shallow dives are the easiest and usually can be snorkeled, meaning everyone can explore these sunken vessels. Moderate and Deep dives require experience, but skilled scuba divers should be chomping at the bit to see what lies in the deeper water, such as wooden boats, tugboats, and 100-foot freighters! Beyond these sunken marvels, Bahamian marine life is vast and beautiful. While snorkeling in the Bahamas, you may encounter barracuda, lionfish, Nassau grouper and countless other gorgeous tropical species. Clownfish and blue tang are also native to Bahamian waters!
The Bahamas are well known for being a fishing hot spot. Nassau is home to the best fishing charters on the island. Countless anglers from all over travel to the Bahamas to chase big tropical game fish. However, you do not have to be an expert fisherman to enjoy! Charters will provide the gear and do the hard work for you, making fishing a fun activity for all, especially families. The waters off the Bahamas are home to several once in a lifetime catches, including tarpon, swordfish, blue marlin and the rare white marlin. Fishing also offers another great way to soak in the surf and sun while still taking a break from the beach.
For shoppers looking for a little retail therapy while on vacation, be sure to check out the Straw Market on Paradise Island for an authentic island shopping experience. Straw vending is considered one of the country’s oldest industries with organized markets in Nassau, Cable Beach, Paradise Island and several of the Out Islands. At the market, you will find vendors selling beautiful unique crafts made predominantly out of straw and wood. Locals and visitors alike line the market’s alleys all day long, admiring the hand-crafted bags, hats, art pieces and much more.
If you are looking to treat yourself to some upscale shopping, head to the Crystal Court Shops on Paradise Island to treat yourself to an afternoon perusing the most well-known, high-fashion brands in the world. Whether you are hunting for name brands or want to throw some island spice into your wardrobe, you will find just what you are looking for.
What to Eat
Shellfish is a huge part of all Caribbean cuisine, and no other species rules the Bahamas quite like “conch,” a tropical marine mollusk whose shells are often seen next to the ears of people trying to listen for the ocean. Conch, pronounced “konk,” is served in a myriad of delicious ways, but cracked conch is what drives locals and tourists alike crazy. It gets the name “cracked” from the process of extracting and tenderizing the chewy meat with a hammer. The pieces of meat are then fried until golden brown and served with hot sauce, resulting in a light, savory, delicious bite of the sea. While there are many great seafood restaurants in Nassau, locals crave the Bahamian Cooking Kitchen, where you can get Conch however you’d like– but always cooked to perfection.
Foodies who are looking to take a deep dive in Bahamian cuisine should consider souse, an Island stew of potatoes, peppers, onions, carrots, lime juice and more. Seems simple, until meat is added, which could be anything from chicken and beef to ox tail and pig’s feet. But do not let the proteins throw you off, as souse is a staple for a reason. The flavor of the stew is complex and savory, where a wide range of ingredients shine together with every spoonful.
Where to Stay
While there are many great places to stay in the Bahamas, many visitors flock to Baha Mar for its modern beauty and elegance. Located on the famed Cable Beach, Baha Mar has only been open for three years and has already built up a reputation for impeccable service and hospitality across the three resorts in its complex. Comprised of the Grand Hyatt, SLS and Rosewood, Baha Mar delivers accommodations for all styles and tastes to ensure that your Bahamian escape is everything you dreamed it would be. Away from the beach, Baha Mar also features 10 pools, a spa, a golf course and many other activities to keep the whole family having fun!
Another popular resort frequented by travelers is Atlantis Paradise Island, which is just a 15-minute drive from Nassau Airport on connecting Paradise Island. The entire resort was built with love for the ocean at its core and is well represented in Atlantis’ architecture. Most of the resort buildings are intertwined with an outdoor aquarium, which also happens to be the open-air marine habitat in the world! Atlantis features five different guest room towers spread across Paradise Island, each uniquely different to accommodate every style of traveler, along with many activities for guests. One of the more popular activities is spending the day at Aquaventure, Atlantis’ 141-acre waterpark. For a taste of night life on Paradise Island, head on over to the resort’s casino next to Marina Village. The casino has a wide range of classic gambling games, as well as a lounge and restaurants such as Japanese foodie favorite Nobu.
The best time to visit Nassau and the Bahamas is either March through May or October through November. The island lays in the Atlantic Hurricane Belt and hurricane season runs from August through early October, with September being the peak. By planning your trip for these months, you can avoid hurricane season and still enjoy glorious temperatures. If you are a traveler who likes it HOT, consider traveling in June, however, the mid-summer heat can pack a punch in the Bahamas.

Where to Stay
While there’s plenty to explore on-island, the place you stay in Nassau will dictate the experience you have. In addition to the popular all-inclusive resorts, there are options for laid-back hotels, boutique hotels or a house rentals. No matter where you end up, you’ll also want plenty of opportunities to try the local food and culture!
Hotels in Nassau
SLS Baha Mar – $$$ – We absolutely loved this newly-built hotel. Everything from the room (clean white, with nods to retro style), to the grounds (the poké food truck and daquiri stand were our favorite) to the service was impeccable. We also had our favorite meal of the trip here at their in-house restaurant, Cleo . Where I stayed.
Balcony views from our room at the SLS Baha Mar hotel .
The pool at the SLS Baha Mar.
Sandals Royal Bahamian – $$$$ – this was our first time staying at a Sandals resort! While an all-inclusive resort isn’t typically our go-to, Sandals’ private offshore island was definitely a highlight for its pristine beach. We also loved their oceanside restaurant, Gordon’s on the Pier . Where I stayed.
A sunset dinner at Gordon’s on the Pier at Sandals.
Swinging at sunset on Sandal’s Private Island.
Graycliff Hotel & Restaurant – $$$ – located in the heart of old town, Graycliff hotel is a historic colonial mansion with tropical gardens and pools that provide a welcome escape from the hustle and bustle of the island. Their wine cellar features over 250,000 bottles sourced from around the world, just a short walk from their on-site chocolate shop which offers lessons in chocolate-making. We got wonderfully lost exploring the grounds of this property! Where I’d stay next time.
The historical building that houses Graycliff Hotel & Restaurant .
The pool at Graycliff Hotel .
The Ocean Club, A Four Seasons Resort – $$$$ – transport yourself into luxury at this historic Four Seasons resort, which has played host to travelers and celebrities since 1962. It’s a unique and romantic property: we loved the stretch of white sand beach and the Versailles-inspired garden, complete with cloisters from a 12th-century French Augustinian monastery. Where I’d want to splurge.
Versailles Garden at The Ocean Club Four Seasons Resort .
Ocean views from Dune Restaurant and bar.
One of the many beautiful pools at The Ocean Club Resort .
Atlantis Paradise Island – $$$ – this oceanside resort has it all: bars and restaurants, a water park, golf course, casino, spa, and more. We had a blast visiting for the day to see the aquarium. It’s an iconic property that’s been known to attract celebrities such as Kevin Hart and Serena Williams since its opening 22 years ago.

Historic Nassau – $ – the most charming pink cottage a walk away from historic sites and downtown Nassau. Grand Suite #8 – $ – this quaint suite is great for traveling as a couple, 10 minutes from downtown. Luxury Beachfront Unit – $$ – a modern beachfront property, but the true draw is a private beach that’s steps away. White Beachfront Home – $$ – located in a quiet area on the western side of Nassau, steps away from the beach. Secret Garden Villa – $$$ – a nice retreat located on three lush acres of tropical gardens. Paradise Island Villa – $$$ – located in a beautiful gated complex walking distance from Atlantis Resort.

Where to Eat
Bahamian Cookin’ – this local spot is a must-try at some point during your trip. It’s simple and features classic Bahamian dishes, like conch fritters, cracked lobster, and steamed chicken.
Biggity – this family-owned restaurant was built by hand with repurposed wood and natural elements. Their menu is simple and healthy, with flavors that pack a punch. A must for a laid-back, cozy meal downtown.
Trying homemade specialties at Biggity in downtown Nassau.
Sippin’ fresh lemonade during our food tour in downtown Nassau.
Cleo Mediterraneo – one of our favorite meals of the trip, Cleo restaurant is located inside the SLS Baha Mar and features tapas-style mediterranean dishes. You’ll want to share — everything on the menu is so tasty!
Louis & Steen’s – recommended by a local on the island, this New Orlean’s-style coffee house is eclectic (read: purple cottage) and serves up typical cajun-style dishes and excellent coffee.
Graycliff Restaurant – this property is on our list twice for a reason! We didn’t get a chance to have dinner at this elegant restaurant, but we’ve heard it’s a real treat. At the very least, go for the atmosphere and wine selection alone.
Exploring the grounds at Graycliff Hotel & Restaurant.
Indoor seating at Graycliff restaurant.
Athena Cafe & Bar – though conch is not typically a ‘Greek’ dish, I was pleasantly surprised by the flavors at this no-frills Greek cafe. Perfect if you’re craving something filling while exploring Nassau’s downtown.
Social House – for fresh sushi, try Social House. Their lunch menu offers deals for the afternoon, or make it an evening and sample their small plates for an unforgettable experience.
Swim with the pigs – Unfortunately the weather was not on our side the day we were meant to swim with the pigs. But, this experience is not to be missed! If you’re staying on Nassau, the closest option is the Sandy Toes experience on Rose Island.
Visit the Atlantis Marine Habitat – the Atlantis property is huge and home to an amazing aquarium. You can buy day passes on their site to visit and explore for a day, which is also a great activity if you get hit with tropical rain.
Exploring the Atlantis Marine Habitat at the Atlantis hotel.
Go on a food tour – This is becoming a regular activity for Jacob and I when we travel, and I have to say it’s always one of our favorite parts of the trip. I’m always curious to see what places locals recommend and any excuse to eat is a plus. Tip: if you go on the food tour we went on , you’ll stop at Bahamian Cookin’, Athena Cafe, and Biggity.
Take a boat tour – as with most destinations, we loved exploring local islands off Nassau with a private boat for the afternoon. Don’t miss the turtles at Turtle Cay (tell your captain to take you!) and the sandy beaches of Rose Island for pristine water all to yourself. For a group boat tour with lunch included, check out this boat excursion .
Rose Island’s empty beach on our boat day.
Swimming with the turtles at Turtle Cay.
Explore the local shops – a lot of on-island artists are represented. We loved visiting Doongalik Studios and Craft Cottage , located next to one another. The studio features artist’s work on display and Craft Cottage has a variety of handmade gifts for purchase. I bought a hand-carved ornament here for my mother.
Chatting with Craft Cottage’s owner Fina about all the best local places to go on-island!
More Things to Do around Nassau
If you only plan one excursion while visiting, make it a boat trip to Rose Island ! It’s absolutely beautiful and untouched here, and we had the beach all to ourselves when we went. Getting out on the water and away from the crowds is amazing.
Where to Go
Clifton Heritage Park – You can snorkel at this beach park, which features giant underwater sculptures. Bring an underwater camera!
Montagu Beach & Fort – Take an afternoon to visit this public beach and surrounding area. You can visit historic Fort Montagu for $2 a person. Another highlight is the nearby fish market , which features fresh conch salads for sale (and lots of live conch!).
Inside Fort Montagu on Montagu Beach.
Conch shells at a local fish market in Nassau.
Bay Street – Explore the architecture in Nassau’s downtown by heading to Bay Street. There are local markets here, but we found them to be a bit too tourist-driven for our taste. The real highlight are the old buildings, and charming neighborhood spots like Biggity .
Local Beaches – Cable Beach is recommended by locals and visitors alike, and Junkanoo Beach is fun and upbeat. We stumbled upon one of our favorite stretches of sand when we went looking for a local SIM card for our phones. It just goes to show that it’s worth exploring parts of the island that no one mentions! You never know what you’ll find…
An empty stretch of beach we found nearby our hotel.
Lunch and drink shacks on Junkanoo Beach in Nassau.
What to Bring
- Light, breathable clothing – think linen pants, flowy dresses.
- A light jacket for the evenings and when it gets windy.
- A hat and plenty of sunscreen. Here is my favorite spray-on sunscreen (it’s coral reef friendly).
- A GoPro for underwater photos! A GoPro dome is also a must if you want to take underwater photos. Our travel photography gear post details out all the gear we use for underwater shots, and examples.
Final Notes
Like most tropical islands, summers can be warm and also rainy. Hurricane season is July to October and high season is November to April. We visited at the end of April and had sunny (but windy!) days, with spots of tropical rain. If you don’t mind crowds, head to Nassau during high season.
The majority of the shops and restaurants on the island take U.S. dollars and converters are U.S. standard, so don’t worry about either if you’re visiting from the states.

What area would recommend if you were to go the airbnb route (instead of a hotel) – want to be close to things to do/restaurants/bars etc. Less important to be somewhere very secluded. Thanks!
Downtown Nassau will be the most walkable, I’d search for something near Graycliff Hotel!

The Nassau Cruise Port: Travel Tips and Things To Do
T he Bahamas is an extremely popular travel destination in the West Atlantic Ocean. The relatively small tropical paradise borders Haiti, Cuba, the United States and Turks and Caicos. The capital city of the Bahamas, Nassau is located on New Providence Island and is a tourism hub. Nassau has established itself as a thriving cultural center and well known cruise ship stop. The destination is popular for its gorgeous white sand beaches and overall naturally beautiful landscape, which is perfect for water sports and waterside relaxation. The pristine coral reef and the possibility of exciting close encounters with marine life are some of the reasons Nassau is a great place to visit.
Due to Nassau’s highly frequented dock, visitors may be under a time limit if they travel by boat or have to deal with crowds during port days. While many tourists only get to enjoy Nassau’s unique offerings during short periods of time, there are ways to best utilize time in the capital city. So, we have compiled some insightful information about the destination and how travelers can make the most of their trip, whether they are cruisers or looking to have a long term stay near the Nassau Cruise Port (NCP) .
Is the Nassau Cruise Port Popular?
Nassau’s cruise port is one of the most popular ports in the world. Each year it attracts nearly 4 million cruise passengers . The port even recently (the first phase opened to the public in 2023) underwent a redevelopment, which has contributed to its popularity and overall appeal. These improvements include the construction of many new buildings which have been strategically planned and placed to improve the flow of traffic.
The taxi dispatch center and optimized shopping strip are just some of the upgrades that lead into downtown Nassau. Ports with the latest accommodations and high quality attractions certainly reap the benefits of modernization, since more tourists consider the site to be much more welcoming and safe.
What Cruise Lines Dock at Nassau’s Cruise Port?
The cruise port has the capacity to accommodate six cruise ships a day. This includes three oasis class or icon class vessels. The larger icon class ships hold more passengers (and are usually taller and longer) while oasis class ships are typically wider with more features. The increased tourist capacity is due to the ports’ expanded waterfront, which was completed through a $300 million dollar project.
Travelers have plenty of options since there is an array of cruise lines that dock at this Nassau port. The Carnival, Celebrity, Disney, Princess, Royal Caribbean, Virgin Voyages, Norwegian, Regent Seven Seas, Oceania, MSC, Holland America, Azamara and Fred Olsen cruise lines stop in Nassau.
Things To Do in Nassau, Bahamas
There are plenty of things to do near the popular Nassau Cruise Port. Some of the most popular tours include rum tasting experiences, sunset cruises and jet skiing. Both sunset cruises and jet skiing offer visitors of the Bahamas stellar views of the crystal clear waters. Rum tasting is a popular tour in Nassau due to the historical and cultural information that travelers can learn by sampling authentic Bahamian rum and learning from locals.
Other travelers that prefer self-led exploration may enjoy the Pirates of Nassau Museum, Ardastra Gardens & Wildlife Conservation Centre or National Art Gallery of the Bahamas. These sites highlight the environmental, cultural and historical significance of Nassau and are top attractions of the area.
There are a few outdoor attractions that are considered top experiences in Nassau. Travelers can swim with island pigs, which has become a very adorable and picturesque experience. The crystal clear waters of the Bahamas adds to the tranquil and playful nature of the cute pigs that roam the island. Jaw’s Beach is one of the highest rated waterside sites for snorkeling and soaking in the sun. This beach is less crowded and visitors may even be lucky enough to witness marine life like the sea turtle and manta ray.
Transportation
Lynden Pindling International Airport (LPIA) is only a few miles away from the port. Even travelers that are unfamiliar with the island should not have trouble flying in and getting a ride to their accomodation. Taxis are the most common mode of transportation for the tourist friendly city.
Since many visitors come from cruises that are docked there, many visiting travelers use taxis to get around the port. There is high traffic near the port, so there are many taxis available in the area. The taxi rates are set, so although travelers may notice prices vary by their particular destination they are unlikely to run into drivers that overcharge. For cruise passengers, it may be more affordable to secure transportation with the company that any tours are booked with. This ensures that they will not have to deal with additional stress and can simply sit back and relax.
There are also buses that are locally known as jitneys and are a popular form of public transportation. But riding the bus to and from excursions means that travelers will have to depend on the bus stop schedule and routes. For some, this lack of autonomy may be less than appealing so travelers should be sure that their itinerary can handle standardized traveling times and differing rates depending on the destination.

Swimming With Pigs in the Bahamas
Getty Images
Reels of people frolicking with pigs on a beach in the Caribbean have more than likely surfaced on your TikTok and Instagram feeds at one point or another. After all, millions of people partake in this quintessential Bahamas experience each year, and the attraction is so popular that it's been replicated in other destinations.
If swimming with pigs in the Bahamas is on your bucket list, read on to discover the best tour options as well as what to consider when you visit.
Which Bahamas island has swimming pigs?
Located in the Exumas, Big Major Cay – commonly known as Pig Beach – is the original Bahamas island with swimming pigs. It is accessible from several islands in the Bahamas as well as Florida. Most swimming pig tours include other tourist attractions and experiences, including snorkeling in Thunderball Grotto (a filming location for two James Bond movies) and swimming with nurse sharks at Compass Cay.
How to get to Pig Beach from the Exumas
Staniel Cay: Staniel Cay is the closest inhabited island to Big Major Cay. Guests of Staniel Cay Yacht Club can take a short boat ride to Pig Beach via a local charter. 3N's Vacation Services and Staniel Cay Adventures are both reputable companies that offer such options.
Great Exuma: The largest island in the Exumas, Great Exuma houses some of the best resorts in the Bahamas , including the family-friendly Grand Isle Resort & Residences and the adults-only Sandals Emerald Bay . To get to Pig Beach from Great Exuma, it's best to book directly with your hotel. You'll have the option to take a full-day tour (with a roughly two-hour boat ride to the attractions from Great Exuma) or fly to Staniel Cay and take a short boat ride to Big Major Cay from there.
How to get to Pig Beach from Nassau
Pig Beach is reachable from Nassau via plane and/or boat. Below are some of the top-rated swimming pig tours from the Bahamas' capital city:

How to get to Pig Beach from Florida
There are a few reputable companies that offer Pig Beach tours from Miami and Fort Lauderdale. Below is a well-rated option:
Bahamas Air Tours: Miami to Bahamas Day Trip
Price: From $949 per person Duration: 12 hours
This full-day tour starts with private transportation from Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport. It also includes in-destination transportation to Pig Beach, Guana Cay, Thunderball Grotto, Compass Cay and the sandbars at Staniel Cay. Both alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages are included in the price as well. Recent travelers rave about this experience, with some noting it's the best tour they've ever taken.
Note that passports are required for this day trip, and that while children are permitted on the tour, it's not ideal for young kids. This excursion is also ill-suited for pregnant women, and the tour operator requires a doctor's clearance for expectant mothers. Tours are limited to nine guests (but require a minimum of five participants); private charters are also available.
Is Pig Beach ethical?
Even though the Bahamas limits the number of tour operators allowed to visit Pig Beach per day, there's some controversy surrounding the island and whether or not it's ethical to visit.
In 2017, several pigs were found dead after an influx of tourists left snacks on the beach, causing the pigs to ingest too much sand. Also, travelers can be aggressive with the pigs, often chasing them, picking them up or even trying to ride them.
In recent years, a number of safety measures have been put in place to protect both the pigs and tourists. Per the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism, they include the following:
- A trough provides a designated feeding place for the pigs.
- Signage communicates rules to tourists, including what you can and cannot feed to the pigs. The pigs are restricted to a diet of fruits and vegetables, such as carrots, grapes, watermelon, apples and lettuce, and many guides supply these items for tourgoers. Some tour guides will provide bread as well, though processed food is not ideal for these animals.
- A local taskforce of caretakers is on the ground daily to ensure visitors and tour operators are engaging with the pigs responsibly.
While the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism maintains that the attraction is sustainable, know that there aren't any legal limitations protecting the pigs at this time.
How to be a responsible traveler at Pig Beach
All tour guides are expected to share the following protocols with travelers; whether they do or not, it is important to respect these rules for both the safety of the pigs and you:
- Remain calm at all times.
- Do not chase, pick up or ride the pigs.
- Do not engage with the pigs without supervision.
- Only use approved food from your tour operator, and do not feed the pigs alcohol.
- If you do not have feed, hold your hands up to show the pigs you do not have anything.
What to pack for your excursion
Pack a beach bag , dry bag or backpack with the following items:
- Reef-safe sunscreen
- Beach towel
- Camera and/or phone
- Waterproof phone pouch with lanyard
- Change of clothing
- Windbreaker or light jacket (in case of rain and because it gets chilly on the water)
- Cash and/or credit card (for tour guide tip and other purchases)
It's best to wear a swimsuit and a cover-up or T-shirt with sandals for the trip.
Frequently Asked Questions
There are several theories about the origin of the swimming pigs. The most logical is that when the Exumas gained popularity with the rich and famous in the 1980s and '90s, the resident pigs were too smelly to stay and were hence moved to the uninhabited island of Big Major Cay.
It is generally safe provided you're respectful of the animals. However, you should keep in mind that the pigs are known to bite if they're hungry and think you might have food you're not sharing. Because Big Major Cay is their home, they also defecate on the shoreline and in the water.
Most tour operators do not allow children under age 2 on these excursions, and based on our experience, we don't recommend bringing toddlers and young children in general — even if rates are free or discounted for them. Wait until your kids are a bit older.
Swimming with pigs on Big Major Cay – the original Pig Beach in the Bahamas – will cost you several hundred dollars – in part because Big Major Cay is a remote destination only accessible by boat. Of course, it is also pricey because of its popularity. Copycat experiences like swimming with the pigs on Rose Island are cheaper, but less authentic.

Amanda Norcross previously visited Pig Beach during a press trip to the Bahamas. Disheartened by tourists' mistreatment of the pigs, she aims to educate travelers on how to visit Big Major Cay and other animal-centric destinations responsibly.

Bahamas government and Royal Caribbean executives break ground during a cermony for the Royal Beach Club Paradise Island in Nassau set to open in 2025. From left to right: Phylicia Woods-Hanna, director of investments of The Bahamas; Jay Schneider, Chief Product Innovation Officer, Royal Caribbean International; Dr. Michael Darville, minister of health and wellness of The Bahamas; Jason Liberty, president and CEO, Royal Caribbean Group; Philip Davis, prime minister of The Bahamas; Michael Bayley, president and CEO, Royal Caribbean International; I. (Courtesy/Royal Caribbean)
The government in 2023 gave the OK for the cruise line to develop a 17-acre portion into what will be called Royal Beach Club Paradise Island when it opens in 2025. Cruise line executives and government officials, including Prime Minister Philip Davis, grabbed shovels along the white sandy beaches with turquoise water in the background.
“With the signing of the deal [for] Royal Beach Club Paradise Island, we embark on this project to further enhance the vitality of our tourism product,” Davis said. “Signing today’s agreement, we add another world-class experience to our tourism offerings. And even more importantly, we take a bold step toward greater Bahamian empowerment in the tourism industry.”
The site is on the western edge of the strip of land that runs alongside the waterway through which ships brought nearly 4.5 million passengers in 2023, making Nassau the world’s busiest cruise port of call.
Royal Caribbean’s site expects about 2,000 visitors a day. They will be ferried over from the port but then return by land going through downtown Nassau.
It’s the first site for the smaller-sized beach club private destination Royal Caribbean plans to build out as opposed to its private island and resort destinations such as Perfect Day at Coco Cay in the Bahamas and Labadee on Haiti’s northern coast.
The Paradise Island spot will play up Bahamian culture alongside traditional offerings such as the beach, cabanas, four food and drink venues and three pools with swim-up bars. The site is being designed by a Bahamian architectural firm, and will give space for local artisan work for sale and live local music.
The project is a public-private partnership under which Bahamians are invited to own up to 49% of it. The plan is for locals to manage the experiences offered at the resort.
The cruise line will own 13 acres of the property while 4 acres go to Crown Land, which is a territorial area owned by the state. The cruise line will also pay a new tourism levy in exchange for the development.
“Marking more than the beginning of the construction process, today’s groundbreaking event symbolizes partnership, momentum and continued economic development for so many Bahamian entrepreneurs and the entire community,” said Jason Liberty, the cruise line parent company Royal Caribbean Group’s President and CEO. “We are grateful to our partners for their support, especially the Bahamian government, who stand with us here today in celebration of what is to come.”
The additional attraction to the port augments a $300 million overhaul of the Nassau Cruise Port that had its grand opening last year.
Already the port has expanded its capacity to six ships, including the ability to dock three of the massive Oasis-class ships from Royal Caribbean at once.
The revamp includes a new terminal building, Junkanoo museum, 3,500-person amphitheater, living coral exhibit plus more entertainment, food, beverage and retail space. Once complete, the port’s capacity will jump to more than 33,000 passengers per day. It had been around 20,000 a day.
