Yes, the Honolulu Zoo is worth it! The animals are so fun to visit and explore, and your kids will love experiencing a zoo in Hawaii! It is really quite special to see penguins living in Hawaii!

Only service dogs for those with disabilities are allowed. All other dogs are not allowed at the Honolulu Zoo.

Even though it’s a fairly small zoo, they still have more than 1200 animal species. Here you can find tigers, monkeys, elephants, penguins, sloths, and much more.

Where is the Zoo in Hawaii?

The only zoo is located on Oahu in Honolulu. Because it is so close to Waikiki, some will call it the Waikiki Zoo. This is the only typical zoo in Hawaii.

All other “zoos” or places to visit animals on the other islands are different zoos such as the rainforest zoo on the Big Island and Sea Life Park also on Oahu.

Visiting the Honolulu Zoo: What to Expect

Here is what to expect when you go to visit and explore the Honolulu Zoo. You’ll quickly see why it’s one of the best Oahu activities for families.

Learn all about parking, ticket info, what animals to expect, and lots of tips to have a super fun day with your family at the zoo! We think it’s one of the top things to do in Honolulu with toddlers and preschoolers.

You actually have to pay for parking if you park in the zoo lot; it is not added to the ticket cost. It costs $1.50 per hour to park there. It is best to pay for two to three hours, especially if there is a line to enter the zoo.

There are places close by to the zoo where you might find free parking. There are parks with street parking that may have free parking or different stores nearby as well. The Shell parking lot on Monsarrat Avenue has free parking if you can find a spot there!

What time does the Honolulu Zoo open and close?

The Honolulu Zoo opens at 10:00 am and closes at 4:00 pm. But you can only get tickets until 3:00 pm. You do not have to have a reservation; you are welcome to come and go as you please!

Membership vs. Day Admission

You can’t purchase your Honolulu Zoo tickets online, only at the gate. There are a few different options for tickets.

General Admission :

Adults 13 and older are $19.00
Children 3 to 12 years old are $11.00
Children 2 and under are free!

Kama‘aina / U.S. Military Admission:

Adults 13 and older are $8.00
Children 3 to 12 years old are $4.00

The Honolulu Zoo kama’aina rate is for those who live on the island and have a valid ID to prove it.

Memberships:

You can also become a member of the Honolulu Zoo to get extra discounts. You can enter the zoo however many times you want, with your own membership line for an entire year. You will get discounts at the gift shop, snack bar, and other deals.

This might not be the best option if you only plan to vacation once in Oahu for the year. Plus, when we went, the membership line was longer than the general admission line!

Stroller Rentals

There are stroller rentals available if you forget to bring your own! They have both double and single strollers. You will need to pay a $10 refundable deposit if you wish to rent.

You can also rent a wheelchair if needed!

Playground Area

In the middle of the zoo, there is a fun playground area for the kids. While children love to look at all the animals and explore, they also need to wiggle and run around to let out some of their energy.

This playground is perfect! It has slides, swings, ropes to climb, pretty much a child’s dream. There are picnic benches and tons of shaded grass for parents to sit down on. You can even enjoy a nice picnic lunch out there too!

Right at the entrance is the Honolulu Zoo gift shop. It has fuzzy animal toys, postcards, and other fun wildlife souvenirs. You can also find some snacks, water, and even a fan if you get too hot.

What animals does the Honolulu Zoo have?

There are over 1200 animals at the Honolulu Zoo! It is a 42-acre zoo, so there is room for plenty of fun animals for you to explore.

All animals have signs so you can identify the real name and where they come from. Most of the animals’ habitats are also fun facts about each animal individually. There are also volunteers around some shelters who share the animals’ names and how old they are!

There is a huge variety of animals at this zoo. That’s part of why it’s one of the most fun things to do in Oahu with kids. They have a few main sections in correlation to each part of the world:

When you first enter the zoo, there are bird habitats. You will see and hear so many exotic birds! Have some fun talking with the parrots, watching a stunning black swan swim around, and see a huge variety of birds.

You can see some pretty cute sloths here too! One sloth just had a baby back in March of 2021, and it is so cute!

Primates of the World

This is probably the favorite part of the zoo for the kids! You will definitely hear this section way before you see it. Here you will see some very active spider monkeys, golden lion tamarins, lemurs, white-handed gibbons, siamangs, and chimpanzees!

These animals are so fun to watch climb everywhere as they squeal and play with one another. Then, you can see beautiful orangutans too! There are two that are kept in their own habitat behind the glass. They usually like to stay close to the glass and are friendly, so you can see them very close up!

African Savanna

In this zoo section, you will find many of the animals you will see in traditional zoos, with a few fun exceptions. Here are some animals to explore in the African Savanna section:

Penguins
Hippo: The hippos are in an enclosed section where you can look and see. When we went, he was right up against the glass!
Flamingos
Aardvarks
Giraffes: There is a fun giraffe sculpture to take pictures at too!

This was our favorite section of the zoo and where we spent the majority of our time.

Arusha Town

The last main section of the zoo is Arusha Town. Here is where you will see a lion, along with:

African Wild Dogs
Meerkats
Reptiles
And many others

Compared to the other sections, this one was smaller and went pretty fast. A lot of these animals slept during the day, so we couldn’t see very much.

These are just some of the fun animals to explore here, but there is so much more! Some can also see tigers and cheetahs, alligators in the swamp sections, and a huge python!

Some animals aren’t available to see during some parts of the day. Many sleep and go where you cannot see them. But the majority are out and ready for visits!

How long should I plan to visit the Honolulu Zoo?

You should plan about 2-3 hours to experience the zoo fully. We got to see almost all the animals in around two hours, but we did not stop at the playground or eat any food.

Two and a half hours will allow you to fully explore the entire zoo and get the most out of your visit.

Tips for Visiting the Honolulu Zoo

Here are just a few tips to make the most out of your visit to the Hawaii zoo:

Bring and apply sunscreen : We forgot and got a little burned during the few hours we were there!
Bring bug spray : Because there is a lot of wildlife, lakes, and grassy areas, there are also a lot of bugs. Bring bug spray, so you don’t get bit by a lot of mosquitos!
Bring a hat: While there is some shade, many animals are out in the open. Wear a hat to protect you and keep you cooler.
Bring a fan: Make sure to bring a small portable handheld fan with you, especially if you have children. They will get hot!
Bring a wagon: Strollers are great too, but we brought our foldable wagon, and it was so easy to get around everywhere!
Arrive before the zoo starts : We arrived right at 10:00 am and grabbed the last parking spot. We had to wait in a long line for about 15 minutes. If you plan to go in the morning, arrive earlier, so you don’t have to wait much in line!
Bring water : It gets really hot walking around in the sun, so bring plenty of water for you and your kids!

The mission of the Honolulu Zoo is to inspire stewardship of our living world by providing conservation, education, and meaningful experiences to our community. The Zoo emphasizes Pacific tropical island ecosystems and our traditional values of malama (caring) and ho'okipa (hospitality).

The Honolulu Zoo is unique in that it is the only zoo in the United States to be established by grants made by a sovereign monarch.

In 1914, the City of Honolulu assumed responsibility for Kapi`olani Park and Ben Hollinger, the first Park Director for Kapi`olani Park, began collecting animals “for the children of Hawai`i.” His collection began with a monkey, bear and an African elephant. In 1947, 42.5 acres within Kapi`olani Park, was designated as the Honolulu Zoo. A Master Plan in 1984, was developed for a Tropical Zoological Garden. All exhibits were organized into three tropical ecological zones: the African Savanna, Asian and American Tropical Forests, and Pacific Islands.

There are approximately 900 different animals from the tropics that now reside at the Honolulu Zoo. Komodo Dragons, orangutans, elephants, primates, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and a variety of African animals can be viewed in their specially-designed habitats daily.

Honolulu Zoo is the flagship tourist attraction in Oahu . It is one of the largest zoos in the world. It is a part of 300 acre Kapiolani Park located in the southeast end of Waikiki. The Zoo is family-friendly and filled with a lot of fun activities that kids love. It is the only zoo in the entire United States history to have been constructed out of a king’s wish.

The area that contains Honolulu Zoo was initially covered with marshland. The region provided everything to support civilization. It had fertile soil for cultivation, clean water for fishing and trees for construction. In 1876, King David Kalakaua gifted 300 acres to Park Association. The marshes and lagoons were drained. The area was beautified and was named Queen Kapiolani Park , in honour of his wife. The park housed rare and exotic birds, collected by the king.

By 1914, the park began showcasing animals in the park. These activities were undertaken under the leadership of the Administrator of Parks and Recreation, Ben Hollinger. The animals include the lion, bear, monkey, and elephant. During the Great Depression, the zoo was on the verge of closing down. But perseverance saved the zoo and overcame the troubles. Now, Honolulu Zoo is the favourite destination of 750,000 travellers who visit here every year.

The stated mission of Honolulu Zoo is to ‘Inspire the stewardship of our living world by providing meaningful experiences to our guests.’ The message is practised clearly in every program in the zoo. The zoo offers many funds and applications with natural preservation as its primary aim. “Zoo to You” is one such program to motivate people to respect the land. It is free of charge. The program focuses on local species of animals and plants and the threat they face from invasive species. Another initiative is the Orangutan Outreach Program. This project aims to educate people on orangutans and the risks they face.

“To create a global and Hawaii-based environmental awareness which leads residents and vacationers to feel responsible for the well-being of this extraordinary place that is the Hawaiian Islands.”- The educational aim of Honolulu Zoo summarizes what the zoo stands for. The goals of the zoo are:

-Make people aware of the local Hawaiian species.

Conservation and protection of nature are of utmost importance in today’s world. In the fight against climate change and global warming, the Zoo puts forward a crucial message.

Honolulu Zoo provides a great relaxing experience to its visitors. But at the same time, the Zoo also wants to offer a meaningful experience to its guests.

1.Conservation: The zoo represents decades of hard work of thousands of people and never-ending compassion of these people to conserve nature. The zoo protects over about dozens of endangered animals. It also provides custom made natural habitats to over 905 species of animals. When you visit the zoo, you will understand the strategic role the zoo plays in the conservation of biology and behaviour of all these animals.

2. Establish environmental awareness: The zoo offers walking tours and camps for children. The camps focus on lessons and activities which provide knowledge about our environment and its importance. The children will gain a good understanding of the connection between humans, animals and nature. They will be inspired and motivated to protect and conserve the environment.

3. Better knowledge of animal species for children: Walking tours and interactive classes are conducted in the zoo. It involves interactive presentations, display of fossils and live tours. Children will see endangered animals up close. They will see how animals and humans can live together and thrive.

4. Know more about Hawaii’s royal history: The zoo provides an opportunity for its visitors to come close to Hawaii’s history. The zoo is an integral part of Hawaii’s imperial past. It introduces visitors to the story of King David Kalakaua, who had gifted 300 acres of land in which the zoo sits. You will hear the legend of Queen Kapiolani, the king’s wife after whom the park was named. You will also become familiar with the stories of hundreds of different animals brought from all around the world from 1914.

The Honolulu Zoo provides habitat to about 905 animal species. They come from different ecosystems in the world-ranging from tropical evergreen forests to arid grasslands. They are housed in specially designed living spaces that are really close to their natural habitat.

The diversity found in Honolulu Zoo is unimaginable. It contains thousands of animals, two dozen endangered species like black rhino, Sumatran tiger, Komodo dragon, etc. The zoo consists of 42 acres for the exhibition of animals. There are ring-tailed lemurs, terrapins, tortoise, and many other rare species that you can find here. There is a collection of African animals like kookaburras and turtles too. For the medical care of these animals, an Animal Health centre is also present.

An animal that is highly likely to go extinct is categorized as endangered species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Honolulu Zoo houses several endangered birds, mammals and reptiles. Some of these endangered animals you can see in the zoo are:

1. Black Rhino: The zoo has two handsome black rhinos. They were acquired from the American zoo in 1999.

2. Sumatran tiger: The Sumatran tiger is found only in Indonesia. They are in Red List. The zoo houses one Sumatran tiger.

3. Asian elephant: It is the only living animal of the genus Elephas. It is endemic to South Asia.

4. Chimpanzee: Want to see the most intelligent animal known to man? The zoo houses a few Chimpanzees.

5. Ring-tailed lemur: Ring-tailed lemur is an endangered animal only found in Madagascar.

6. Golden lion tamarin: The golden lion tamarin is a rather vocal little animal belonging to the monkey family. The most noticeable feature is its tail.

7. Komodo dragon: Komodo dragons are the most massive lizard species in the world. It is on the verge of extinction.

8. Galapagos tortoise: Galapagos tortoises are the largest living species of tortoise. They can be seen in the Zoo.

9. Giant South American River turtle: They are one of the biggest freshwater turtles in the world. They are widely hunted for flesh. Giant South American River turtle is conserved in Honolulu.

10. South-East Asian River terrapin: South East Asian River terrapin is a critically endangered riverine turtle found in the zoo.

The zoo also houses many endangered birds. Manchurian crane, Marianas Fruit Dove, Palawan peacock pheasant, Palm Cockatoo, Laysan Teal, Nene and Cuban Amazon are some of the endangered birds you can find in Honolulu Zoo.

The zoo also houses a wide variety of plant species. Some of them are native to Hawaii and have a lot of traditional value. They are of cultural importance to the local people. Some of these are hibiscus, Kou, lehua, Hala, etc. Kou plants are known for medicinal and dye-making properties. The Hala plant is used for weaving.

Honolulu Zoo offers fun activities to its visitors throughout the year. Some of the activities to do during the day are:

1. Animal Feeding: You can buy food from stalls inside the zoo and feed the thousands of animals you find in the zoo. You will come face to face with hippos, monkeys, gazelles and komodo dragons who all would love to take a bite.

2. Stroll through the botanical garden featuring plants: The zoo is home to hundreds of plants that would blow you away. There are plants that are native to Hawaii as well as plants from far off places. You can also see some of the exotic plants like kukui nut trees and noni plants in here. You can take a hike through the botanical garden enjoying the fragrance and beauty of these plants.

3. Eat & Drink in the zoo’s outdoor restaurant: After long walks, when you get tired, you can visit the outdoor restaurants and treat yourself with tasty traditional Hawaiian food. When you need a bite, you can visit these restaurants, selling pizzas, chicken tenders, hamburgers, fresh fruits, and chilled non-alcoholic drinks. Local snacks like spam musubi and shave ice are also available.

4. Buy animal-themed gifts in the gift shop: If you want to take some gifts for your loved ones as a memory of the trip, you can get it from the gift shop just before the exit. You can find unique tokens that you can walk away with. You can also buy stuffed animals. There are also a large variety of clothing, jewellery and toys present too.

5. Have a look at various kind of animals: The zoo contains two dozen endangered animals that you can only see very rarely. You can see a lot of endangered animals up close. There are more than 25 endangered species in the zoo. These endangered animals include Sumatran tigers, ring-tailed lemurs, Asian elephants, and many more. There you can spend your time watching these animals and learning about their behaviour.

6. Play with your kids: The zoo provides a grassy playground area where your kids can run around and play. Join your kids and have some fun. There is a “Keiki Zoo” in here. It is a mini version of the zoo with a lot of interactive exhibitions specially designed for children.

Night Activities

After the sun sets, the nightlife in the zoo begins, and it is just as thrilling as the day. Once the gate closes, it marks the beginning of night time activities in the zoo. The things you can do at night are:

1. Walking night tours: Walking night tours are provided with every Friday and Saturday in the zoo. It is a guided tour that is given after sunset. It is a two-hour walking tour with educator guidance. You will get a chance to see live some of the zoo’s most beautiful animals and their activities. These nocturnal activities are exciting and worth watching.

You can watch most of the animals getting ready to sleep while some like bats and owls waking up! You can learn more about these animals’ biology, competition and balance that exists in this ecosystem. You can see the display of animal bio facts. This guided tour will end with a classroom presentation about the zoo.

Age limit for entering the Twilight tours is above five years.

The tours are held all around the year. During October to March, the timing is from 4:30 PM to 6:30 PM. From April to September, the tour starts at 5:30 PM and ends at 7:30 PM.

The fees for the Twilight tours are $20 for adults and $15 for children.

2. Camping: You can camp overnight at the zoo under the stars. The cool Pacific breeze will melt all your worries. You will be surrounded by a unique world of animals and plants. The animal sounds will take you back to old times. You will feel that you are living in a forest. It will be an enjoyable experience that will remain with you for a long tie. You can either sleep under the stars or set up tents on the back lawn.

The zoo camp will also be a great learning opportunity. The camping will include interactive activities like lessons on bio facts, crafts and arts. A different theme is highlighted each week. You will walk away with a handful of valuable information about different animals and their environment.

The zoo provides a spring camp during February, a Summer camp during April and a fall camp in October. Register early to get into the field.

The cost for camping is $360 per week. There is an additional $70 per week for aftercare.

3. Storytelling: You can make the tour more personal by sharing your stories with your fellow travellers and also listening to their stories. You are sure to make some good friends.4. • Timing: Honolulu Zoo remains open from 9 AM to 4:30 PM every day. It is closed only on Christmas.

• Transportation: The zoo can be reached by getting off at Stop 4 of the Waikiki Trolley Green Line.

• Parking: The zoo is filled with tourists most of the time. So, you might take a long time to find parking space. The entrance is at Kapahulu avenue. The parking fees is $1 per hour. Free parking spaces can also e found in the neighbourhood. The zoo is at a walkable distance from Waikiki. So, you can park in nearby streets.

• Admission: Admission fees for adults above 13 years old are $19. Children between 3 and 12 years old have to pay $11. The visit is free for kids below three years past.

• Animals are profoundly affected by loud noises. So, use quiet voices during the trip.

• There are a lot of important plans grown in the zoo. Do not walk over these plants. Always stay in assigned pathways.

• Fences and railings are constructed for your protection. Do not take risks and jump over fences.

• Throwing rocks and toys into animal habitats is dangerous. Animals might eat it and can get ill or even worse. Do not throw things inside the zoo.

• Teasing or making actions might trigger animals, and I might cause accidents. Do not do this.

• The zoo gets extremely hot. Wear sun protection.

• Pack light and carry water. You will need to cover long distances on foot.

• The zoo is huge. It is much larger than it appears from outside. Taking a packed lunch with you might help.

Brief History About The Zoo

The Honolulu Zoo is the only zoo in the United States that was set up with grants from a real-life king or queen in royal lands. In this case, it was a sovereign monarch who made it happen. Let’s now dive into it’s history.

The history of the Honolulu Zoo is really interesting. It all started when King Kalakaua decided to give 300 acres of land to the people of Hawaii in 1877.

This area first became Kapiolani Regional Park , which was named after Kalakaua’s wife, Queen Kapiolani. The king wanted to display his rare bird collection in part of this park. Little did he know this decision would lead to the creation of the Honolulu Zoo.

The Honolulu Zoo has been part of Hawaii’s story for over a hundred years. In 1914, when Ben Hollinger, the first park director, took charge as the Administrator of Parks and Recreation, he came up with a fantastic idea of collecting animals for the Hawaiian kids.

It all began with a monkey, a bear, and an African elephant. Even when times got tough during The Great Depression and money was tight, the zoo somehow pulled through and kept growing.

It wasn’t until 1947 that the Honolulu Zoo officially became what it is today. The city set aside 42.5 acres of Kapiolani Park for the zoo, and a master plan was made.

In 1984, a second plan was created to organize the zoo into three zones: the African Savanna, Asian and American Tropical Forests, and Pacific Islands. This design is what shapes the Honolulu Zoo we enjoy today.

By 1990, the whole look of the zoo got a makeover to make it an even more exciting place for all the lucky visitors! As the years passed, more birds were added, and three big aviary complexes were built.

The Honolulu Zoo is home to some unique animals and exhibits that keep expanding, taking you on an exciting wildlife adventure!

The Honolulu Zoo is home to over 905 species of animals from the tropics. Here are some– elephants, gorillas, giraffes, lions, zebras, tigers, a variety of reptiles, amphibians, and even Komodo dragons – it’s like a wildlife wonderland!

The Honolulu Zoo boasts over a thousand animals in specially designed habitats. You can find creatures roaming the African savannah to those chilling in tropical forests and the Pacific islands. It’s a diverse mix of wildlife waiting for you to explore!

Hours Of Operation

If you plan to visit the Honolulu Zoo, the entire zoo is open every day from 10 am—the zoo’s gates close at 3 pm, and the zoo grounds shut down at 4 pm. You don’t need to make any reservations to visit the place.

What Can You Find Inside The Zoo?

For those exploring with wheels, the zoo is wheelchair accessible, with paved walkways all around. And if you or the little ones need a break, the zoo has playgrounds, cafes, and snack bars to keep everyone happy. Don’t miss the cool giant hippo and giraffe sculptures – they’re a hit with the kids!

Zoo Etiquette You Must Follow

When you go to the zoo, remember it’s the animals’ only home, so always keep these things in mind:

• Talk quietly • Don’t tease or throw things • Don’t climb fences • Don’t give the animals food • Stay on the paths, and don’t wander off • Don’t destroy the plants • Don’t play loud music • Don’t drink or smoke inside the premises

Although it’s a small zoo, it has ample space for parking your vehicles. The zoo parking lot entrance is from Kapahulu Avenue.

It’s metered parking with a fee of $1.50 per hour, and the maximum time allowed at once is 4 hours. The payment machines accept credit cards, bills, and coins, but please ensure you have exact change.

If you don’t want to pay, you can park your cars or scooters in the Waikiki Shell parking space on Monsarrat Avenue.

They also have discounts for locals (kamaaina) and military folks (keep your IDs handy). Service animals are openly welcome.

If you need a stroller or wheelchair, you can rent one.

Great zoo! Entrance took 30 min in the morning to enter though, so that's not great. Lots of animal varieties. Some exhibits were under renovation, so it's good that they are trying to improve the animal accommodations. There is a kids playground in the middle. Lots of picnic tables and chairs to eat at. Bathrooms are pretty clean, we went in the morning before it got much use. Overall a great experience. Lots of benches to sit on as you walk, which I made use of. Only found one water fill station, but there might be more.

Nice, well kept zoo right at Waikiki beach. Takes a few hours to see. I would say allow half a day. A very pleasant walk through the park. For two people, a one year membership is just a little more than a one day ticket so if you are staying in the area you can visit again. There is much to see here. Feeding time is especially interesting!

Overall, it is a nice zoo. It shows they have been doing improvements to the animal enclosures. It will take you about 2 hours to walk the path, but there are plenty of rest areas. There is a kids area, but the contact is limited to goats. You can look at the pigs, donkeys, and cows but no contact. If you go during the hot time of the day, be prepared that lots of the larger animals will be taking shelter and hard to view.

PEARL HARBOR AVIATION MUSEUM REVIEWS

We were very much looking forward to visiting the museum, and it definitely did not disappoint! The quality and the variety of exhibits is epic. There is also an outdoor display with very notable fighter jets and huge helicopters. The cafeteria is a nice touch and the food was actually great but pricey as you may expect. Definitely pickup a free audio tour it’s well worth it. We ran into the man who actually narrated the audio tour which was cool. Don’t see a B17 every day .. Before arriving we were a little bit tired after spending a bunch of time at the USS Missouri memorial and I wish that we had more time and strength to spend more time here. We were lucky and got a golf cart ride back from the hanger from one of the employees which was a good way to end the afternoon at the museum.

The Static displays were Amazing!! I enjoyed the walking history audio tour and purchased some items from the gift shop. The ship models were highly detailed and an incredible way to really grasp the intricate details of the ships. This was a Sunday and not very busy at all. Thanks to the staff and volunteers for all of their hard work. Mahalo and Aloha!!

Great museum. Really enjoyed my visit. So much to see!!! If you get a chance, you have to do the Top of the Tower tour too. Best view of the harbor in my opinion. All of the staff were friendly and helpful. I had a wonderful time. Definitely worth it for value and the experience. I hope to visit again someday.

Beautiful old well constructed building. Fascinating craftsmanship from the stone work to the interior woodwork. Very detailed descriptions, artifacts, and displays of Hawaiian and Polynesian culture and history.

If you are interested in the history of Hawaii and how it developed as a country and then became our 50th State you will love touring the museum. They have great children’s activities, a beautiful gift shop as well as a wonderful restaurant.

Brilliant museum. Well laid out and detailed information on every item on display. We spent 2 hours here and really enjoyed the time here. Beautiful clean museum. Only 40 minutes on public transport to get there.

One of the wonderful things about entertaining visiting family and friends in Hawaii is that it will often lead to activities we might otherwise regard as “touristy” and take for granted. That is how we here at the HAT Blog found ourselves at the Honolulu Zoo recently, and it’s why we are still charmed by the visit.

Where to meet

A friend of my wife’s was on Oahu for a short stay during a multi-island vacation, so we made plans to meet him at the Queen Kapiolani Hotel in Waikiki. It’s located directly across the street from the Honolulu Zoo on Kapahulu Avenue. My last visit to the zoo was at least ten years ago, minding calabash nieces and nephews as they careened from habitat to habitat, squealing with delight and gawking in childhood wonder at exotic animal species from all over the world.

Honolulu Zoo History

It was easy to remember then my own childhood experiences at the Zoo, from primary school field trips to birthday parties for calabash cousins decades ago. The recent visit through my (mostly) adult eyes and senses was more thoughtful and it lacked the corn syrup-based snacks and treats I remember from my childhood (I’ve long since outgrown my love for sweets). It was a learning experience, even for this lifelong Hawaii kid.

I knew the history of the Zoo, that it began as a home to King David Kalakaua’s menagerie of exotic animals, gifts from kings and queens and royals around the globe starting in 1877. I knew that it wasn’t determined as the Honolulu Zoo until 1947. I was vaguely aware that it comprises 47 acres at the foot of Diamond Head Crater.

I’d been on behind-the-scenes tours of the chimpanzee habitat, met Krueger the Rhinoceros (RIP), and fed watermelon halves into the gaping maws of massive hippopotamuses. But this most recent visit opened my eyes to the determined and ongoing efforts toward preservation, conservation, education, and outreach at the Zoo.

I found out that the Wildest Show Concert Series is back after two years of the pandemic. I learned that because we were politely asked to leave the zoo and re-enter for the special event. It’s a fundraising event, with proceeds going to various improvement and outreach projects at the zoo.

New Learning Experineces

I was tickled to learn that the official Animal Mayor of the Honolulu Zoo is Squirt the Giraffe (he’s huge , get it?), who narrowly beat out Rusti the Orangutan as voted by the public in a 2020 virtual election (Rusti was named Conservation Ambassador). I learned that the Honolulu Zoo just welcomed a Sumatran Tiger from a Louisiana zoo. I learned about Twilight Tours at the zoo, and that there are Zoo Camps this summer and this fall. I also learned about the Histories and Mysteries Tour, along which zoo guides tell over a dozen stories of supernatural experiences involving zoo staff (reservations required).

Above all, I learned that I have a lot more to learn about how much the Zoo has changed over the years, and how much effort goes into conservation and educational outreach, and into the care for the animals and habitats there.

It’s an enriching and entirely family-friendly experience, even for this fairly old guy without children. The Honolulu Zoo is a shared childhood experience among a vast number of Oahu residents, as it will surely continue to be well into the future. And at $19 per adult (13+) and $11 for kids (3-12), and an affordable, enjoyable, and educational way to spend a day for family visiting Oahu.

Learn about the animals’ biology and behavior, and the role that the Zoo plays in the conservation of our endangered species.
