Seeing the beauty of the Amalfi Coast from the sea will make for an unforgettable day, which you are guaranteed to remember forever.

How to choose the right Positano boat tour

Before we dive into my list of the best Positano boat tours, I want to give you an overview of important things to take into account when it comes to choosing the perfect boat tour in Positano for you.

Ultimately we all have different travel styles, budgets and priorities, so the best Positano boat trip for me might not be the best one for you. Here is what you need to think about when choosing your Positano boat tour.

Itinerary:  Where do you actually want to go? Do you just want to cruise in front of Positano, and admire this unique town from the sea? Or do you want to go explore specific beaches and islands?

Unlike some island hopping tours you might have done in other parts of the world, where all the tours seem to follow a set itinerary (without leaving Italy, boat trips in Maddalena are like this), all the tours in Positano have different itineraries.

Obviously all tours will include more or less the same main sights, but they do tend to vary a little. If there’s something specific you want to see in the Amalfi Coast, make sure it’s included in the itinerary!

Starting point:  Where do you want your Positano boat tour to start from? Do you want to make your own way to Positano with the ferry or bus and the join a boat trip once there?

Or would you prefer to get picked up at your accommodation, wherever that is in Amalfi Coast, and be taken to Positano? The starting point of your boat trip will obviously influence your itinerary, as well as price.

What’s included:  Make sure to check what’s included in every boat tour before picking one! Sometimes they’ll include drinks, snacks, beach towels, or even a full lunch, and this will be reflected in the price.

Group size & boat type:  Budget will be the main deciding factor here, but it’s important to look at the type of boat that you’re choosing.

Some group tours are cheap, but it often means you’ll be on one of the larger boats with loads of other people.

If you want to do a tour in a traditional wooden gozzo boat with a smaller group, or even a private boat, the price tag is obviously going to be higher.

Either way, I’m sure you will have a great time exploring the Pearl of the Amalfi Coast by sea!

It’s just good to take into account the different types of boat excursions out there, so you can pick the one that best fits your travel mood.

Best boat tours Positano

Private boat tour in positano at sunset.

We did this private sunset tour in Positano and it was pretty magical. If you’re looking for romantic boat tours from Positano, look no further than this private sunset boat experience.

It’s quite short, lasting only an hour and a half, but we actually liked that, since we only had five days in Amalfi Coast , it meant we had the whole day to explore Positano and do other things.

There’s snorkelling gear, in case you want to take a dip in the sea, but otherwise, this one is all about enjoying the ambience of the coast and the spectacular views over Positano.

You’ll stop near the Li Galli islands where you can watch the sun dip below the horizon.    It’s very chill and romantic, featuring a speaker that you can play your own music on (if you want).

There’s also an optional extra of having a photographer join you to take pictures if it’s a special occasion like a wedding proposal.

There was also a bottle of champagne and some nibbles included in the price, but nothing particularly fancy.

That combined with how short this tour is makes it slightly overpriced in my opinion, but it’s still one of the nicest private Positano boat tours out there, as well as one of the best things to do in Positano .

Boat & Snorkelling Tour with Captain to Positano & Amalfi Coast

But you don’t have to get a private boat tour, of course. Limited to just 10 people, this group tour is one of the quieter and more chill boat tours of the Amalfi Coast.

It’s all about simply soaking up the scenery along this famous coastline. And with limoncello, beer, soft drinks, prosecco and fresh fruit included in the price, it feels like a decadent way to spend a day.

Boarding the gozzo (a traditional Amalfitan boat) in Amalfi itself, the tour takes you to nearby coastal sights like Faraglioni Rocks and hidden beaches where you can swim, snorkel and sunbathe.

The tour will whisk you by the charming village of Conca dei Marini, the former villa of Sophia Loren and the storied Il Saraceno Grand Hotel.

You’ll even head to the Furore Fjord, which is famed as the only fjord in Italy — and as the location of a yearly diving competition (held in July) — before heading to Positano for more hidden beaches.

All in all, this option is super comprehensive and, for the money, easily one of the best boat tours on the Amalfi Coast. If you have a packed Italy itinerary and don’t have long in Amalfi Coast, it’s a great tour as it includes quite a few sights.

Private Boat Tour from Positano to Capri or Amalfi

This private boat tour from Positano is a full-day experience that sees you exploring the Tyrrhenian Sea along the Amalfi Coast.

As with most private tours, you have the choice of sticking to the coast or heading over to Capri to see the sights there.

If you choose the Amalfi Coast option, you’ll stop by the Furore Fjord, sail past luxury villas and elegant hotels, and stop in Amalfi for lunch.

If you choose Capri, it’s all about rock formations, sea caves and Roman ruins, with an optional stop at Capri’s harbour (Marina Grande) for an extra fee.

Positano private boat tours with this amount of choice are ideal for those who like to do things their own way, making it great for couples or friends on a special trip.

Either way, you’ll have drinks and snacks included, a knowledgeable captain who’ll share history and anecdotes with you along the way, and spectacular scenery to lap up.

Positano to Capri Boat Tour

Boat tours from Positano to Capri don’t get much more comprehensive than this full-day trip option .

As well as taking in some of the dramatic coastline of the Sorrentine Peninsula, which is worthy of its very own boat trip I’d say, you also get to set sail across the sea to the island of Capri.

Leaving from Positano via car or minivan transfer, you’ll be whisked to Sorrento, where you’ll board an elegant boat waiting for you at the port.

The tour continues, heading onwards to Capri where you’ll see the iconic Faraglioni (a unique rock formation in the middle of the sea), an ancient Roman villa, as well as the island’s sea caves: the Green Grotto, the Marvellous Grotto and the White Grotto. The Blue Grotto isn’t included, but you can add it as extra.

Also including snacks and drinks, this Positano to Capri boat tour allows you to step off in Capri and explore for a few hours.

Then, after your own personal adventure, it’s back on the boat to Sorrento. It’s a small group tour (maximum of 12 people), so I would say it’s good for a couple or solo traveller.

From Positano: Amalfi Coast Boat Tour

Amalfi Coast tours by boat are the best way to see this beautiful part of Italy. This full-day tour shows it off really well.

Starting in Positano, Praiano or Nerano, this tour sees you whisked off to see the picturesque shoreline and charming towns of the Amalfi Coast with the chance to stop off, explore and swim.

As a bonus, prosecco (as well as water and soft drinks) can be included in the price as a different option.

Otherwise, simply sit back, relax and see the Amalfi Coast the way it is best seen — from the sea, well away from the busy streets, tourists and traffic.

Amalfi Coast & Positano Boat Tour from Sorrento

For those who don’t want to stay in Positano (it’s the most expensive place to stay in Amalfi Coast after all), and choose cheaper Sorrento instead, worry not, as there are plenty of Positano boat tours setting off from here too.

Small-group tours like this one are ideal for solo travellers who want to get to know people during their Amalfi trip, or even for couples who want to socialise and chat.

This particular boat tour from Sorrento to Positano, Li Galli and Amalfi takes in the best of this coastline in a group that’s limited to a maximum of 15 people.

You’ll get a couple of hours to explore the town of Amalfi at your own pace, too.

This Amalfi Coast boat tour includes pick up and drop off (from/to your hotel in Sorrento), making it extra convenient. A light lunch is also included, as are drinks.

Full-Day Boat Tour in Positano & Amalfi

For a full day of exploration (8 to 9 hours), consider booking this Amalfi Coast boat tour . From Positano to Amalfi, you’ll get to see this stunning coastline at its best — complete with prosecco and snacks included.

Beginning either in Sorrento (the meeting point), or with a hotel pick-up available on request, you’ll board the gozzo boat (one of the traditional wooden boats of this part of Italy) and hit the high seas.

You’ll pass by Punta Campanella, which marks the beginning of the Amalfi Coast proper, sail through the lush protected Bala di Ierento, and admire the picturesque village of Nerano from the sea, before heading on to Amalfi and Positano.

You’ll get to stretch your legs and explore each one. Then it’s back to Sorrento, via stops for swimming at hidden coves and beaches, of course!

Budget boat trip in Positano: the ferries

Let’s be realistic. Amalfi Coast is one of the most expensive parts of Italy, and all the tours I listed above are rather pricey and will likely impact your Italy travel budget quite a bit.

If you’re travelling on a budget, and don’t want to spend loads on a boat trip, but still want to experience the magic of Amalfi Coast from the sea, an affordable alternative are the ferries.

All the main towns on the Amalfi Coast are connected by a fairly efficient ferry system. If you visit Italy in summer , it can actually be the easiest way to travel between towns, so you don’t have to deal with traffic and parking.

Ferries obviously won’t stop at little coves and beaches to give you time for snorkelling, but they still allow you to see the beauty of Amalfi Coast and the perched houses of Positano from the sea.

I found this to be the case also in Lake Como. Boat tours in Lake Como are very expensive, but you can still experience the beautiful lakeside views also from the ferries.

Final thoughts on the best Italy Positano boat tours

There you have it, the ultimate compilation of best Positano boat tours! Have you been to Positano before? How did you find it? Let me know in the comments below!

Positano is one of the most magical places in Italy, which features on every Italy bucket list , and it’s easy to see why. With its distinctive houses perched on the side of the cliff, its lush vegetation and pristine beaches, it’s a gorgeous sight.

And seeing it from the sea gives you a unique perspective, which is even more impressive than on land. However, unless you do the first Positano private sunset boat tour I linked, Positano is only a small part of most boat tours.

Yes Positano is stunning, but most boat tours will also include stops at Capri, Amalfi and other beaches along the coast. In my opinion this is better, as it actually allows you to see more!

Besides doing a boat tour in Positano, if your Italy itinerary allows for it, make sure to also include a day trip to Pompeii to see the Pompeii ruins , as well as hiking the Path of the Gods !

I hope you’ve enjoyed reading my guide to the best boat tours from Positano, and that it helped you find the perfect Positano boat tour for you. If you have any questions, just let me know in the comments below!

Guide to Renting a Boat on Positano and the Amalfi Coast

All you need to know about choosing a boat on the Amalfi Coast

Guide to Renting a Boat on Positano and the Amalfi Coast

You can't really say that you've seen the Amalfi Coast until you've seen it by sea. From the water, the colorful fishing villages tumbling down the cliffside to the shore are particularly picturesque, and the rugged coastline unforgettably dramatic.

On a boat trip along the Amalfi Coast , you can savour the thousand shades of blue and turquoise of the Mediterranean waters along the coastline from up close, stopping for a swim in a hidden cove or setting sail to the island of Capri .

Available Boat Rentals and Charters

FAQ - Frequently asked questions

Where should i rent or charter a boat.

You can rent a boat with or without a skipper in all the towns along the Amalfi Coast. We suggest you opt for a boat rental with skipper or an organized boat tour if you do not have any experience at sea.

Do I need a boating license to rent a boat in Positano without a skipper?

For most of the boats available for rental in Positano, you do not need a boating license. However, we suggest that you have at least some experience at sea if you choose to rent a boat without a skipper as the currents along the Amalfi Coast can be tricky.

What is the difference between a private and small-group boat tour?

A private boat tour gives you the freedom of having a boat all to yourself, while a small-group boat tour means sharing the boat with other passengers. Usually, small-group boat tours have a maximum of 10 to 15 passengers. Prices for private tours are per boat (all inclusive), which small-group boat tours are prices per person.

What is a semi-private or shared tour?

These tours use a wooden gozzo which can fit up to 10 or 15 passengers, so each passenger pays a portion of the rental cost for the entire boat rental with skipper.

How far in advance to I need to book a tour or boat rental?

During the busy months of July and August when boat tours are in high demand, you should book as far in advance as possible. During the remainder of the year, you can book up to a couple of days in advance.

What is a water taxi?

Often, the fastest way to travel from one village on the Amalfi Coast to another is by water. In the summer, a number of small boats and ferries make runs between the beaches and waterfront restaurants that are only accessible by sea. These transfers cost just a few euros, and is free for restaurant patrons.

How long does the boat trip take between Positano and Capri?

With an average sized boat, it takes a bit more than 30 minutes.

Can tourists visit the Li Galli islets off the shore of Positano?

No, the islands are private though you can moor nearby to swim offshore.

Why Positano is the Perfect Base for Day Trips

Positano, nestled on the stunning Amalfi Coast, serves as the ultimate launchpad for adventurers seeking to unveil the treasures of Southern Italy. Its central position guarantees effortless trips to enchanting destinations like Capri, Sorrento, and the ancient ruins nestled beneath Mount Vesuvius. This picturesque town not only promises awe-inspiring views but also ensures the easiest way for you to experience the dolce vita Italy is famed for.

Whether by private car, boat trip, or even a leisurely walk, discovering breathtaking locales has never been simpler. Travelers have the luxury of soaking in spectacular views one moment and wandering through the historical piazzas of a coastal town the next. For those intrigued by the allure of the Mediterranean, Positano is your gateway to exploring southern Italy’s most beautiful places, all within a day’s journey.

Exploring Capri: One of the Must-Do Day Trips from Positano Italy

A capri day trip stands as the pinnacle of Southern Italy’s allure. Venturing out on a private boat tour grants you not only the freedom to explore at your own pace but also a unique vantage point of the Tyrrhenian Sea’s stunning vistas. The journey to the island itself reveals the best views, with the famous Blue Grotto being a highlight not to miss. Access to this natural wonder is easiest by sea, making a boat trip the best way to immerse in Capri’s beauty.

The high season brings in summer crowds, thus timing your visit proves crucial. Opting for an early morning excursion helps you avoid the bulk of visitors, ensuring a more relaxed atmosphere as you navigate around the island. Plus, the incredible view you’ll encounter at the island’s highest point is best savored without the throngs of tourists that gather during peak hours.

Capri Boat Tour Tips

Booking a private boat tour to Capri is the easiest way to ensure an unforgettable experience. You will skirt the stunning coast line, catching the best views of the Tyrrhenian Sea from the island’s highest point. Opting for a private excursion allows for a customized itinerary, a relaxed atmosphere away from the summer crowds, and even a chance to swim in secluded spots. A private car might get you close, but nothing compares to the access and perspectives a boat offers.

Remember, high season sees a surge in demand for these types of excursions. Booking early is not just recommended; it’s essential. Lastly, consider the duration of your trip. A single day might be tempting, but a three-day itinerary allows for deeper exploration. The coast of Italy is littered with natural wonders; don’t rush the exploration.

Venturing to Mount Vesuvius and Pompeii

Venturing south for one of your day trips from Positano Italy, a unique experience awaits. The ancient ruins of Pompeii, forever etched in history by the catastrophic eruption of Mount Vesuvius , call for exploration. This journey combines awe with education, offering insights into a world preserved for millennia. A guided tour of Vesuvius provides not just a walk but an adventure across time. Here, the ground whispers tales of Pompeii’s last day.

Choosing the best option for this expedition often involves a combined day trip. Such excursions, carefully crafted, ensure that visitors witness the spectacular views from Vesuvius’ summit and then delve into Pompeii’s unearthed secrets. Booking line tickets in advance during the high season is a smart move. It dodges the summer crowds, making the visit more intimate. The expertise of a local guide enhances this immersive encounter, revealing the nuances of ancient lives and the power of a volcano.

Pompeii Tour Recommendations

Discovering the ancient ruins of Pompeii offers an intriguing peek into the past. You might find yourself torn between the privacy of a private car and the camaraderie of a small group tour. Each option promises a unique experience. A private tour allows for a tailored adventure, designed just for you. In contrast, small group tours provide a social dimension, sharing awe and insights with fellow travelers.

Again, high season will bring in a lot of visitors, transforming Pompeii into a very popular destination. To secure your spot without the wait, booking skip the line tickets in advance becomes imperative. This preparation makes the difference between an extended wait under the summer sun and a smooth entry. Remember, Pompeii is a UNESCO World Heritage site, attracting thousands. Your foresight in booking early ensures an uninterrupted journey through one of Italy’s most fascinating historical landmarks.

Sorrento: Gateway to the Sorrento Coast

A day trip to Sorrento unfolds as the perfect gateway to the enchanting Sorrento Coast. This picturesque town has captivated the hearts of travelers with its stunning views, offering a panorama of the Tyrrhenian Sea that remains unmatched. Sorrento sets itself apart with a relaxed atmosphere, where the pace of life seems to slow down, inviting you to pretend to be a local while you visit.

At every turn, Sorrento offers an array of shopping opportunities, from handmade leather sandals to local specialties that reflect the rich culinary heritage of southern Italy. Dining in Sorrento is an adventure in itself, with venues ranging from the cliffside restaurants offering spectacular views to the warmth of small, family-run trattorias tucked away in the town center.

The town’s beautiful gardens are a testament to the natural wonders surrounding the area; a short walk from the main beach or city center might lead you to lush lemon groves or the tranquil setting of a hidden garden. These serene spots provide a perfect place for reflection or a relaxed afternoon away from the summer crowds.

Getting There: Sorrento Travel Tips

Reaching Sorrento from Positano unveils a trove of picturesque landscapes and an introduction to Southern Italy. You face several options, each offering a unique glimpse of the coast. A popular choice, a private tour bus or van, winds along the coastal road, offering stunning views that capture the essence of the Tyrrhenian Sea. The journey itself becomes a memorable part of your day trip, as the winding roads present breathtaking panoramas.

Alternatively, the sita bus serves as a reliable conduit between these two beautiful towns. This method allows you to immerse yourself in local life, sharing moments with residents and fellow travelers alike. For those seeking a more scenic route, a short boat trip will not disappoint. It affords an unparalleled perspective of the Sorrento coast, with the sea breeze complementing the sun’s warm embrace.

The Amalfi Adventure

Amalfi, nestled on the stunning coast of Italy, beckons travelers with its unmatched charm. The picturesque town serves as a gateway to some of the most beautiful places in Southern Italy. Its central location makes it an ideal spot for a day trip, offering easy access to the breathtaking surroundings.

Strolling along the Marina Grande, you’ll find yourself captivated by the colorful buildings and the relaxed atmosphere that defines this little town. Amalfi’s main beach offers a perfect place for a leisurely day under the sun, surrounded by incredible views of the Tyrrhenian Sea.

Ways to Enjoy Amalfi

Amalfi beckons with a vibrant tapestry of experiences waiting to be discovered. In this picturesque town, every turn presents an opportunity to immerse yourself in the very essence of the Amalfi coast.

  • Embark on a Lemon Grove Tour : Amalfi is renowned for its lush lemon groves. A stroll through these fragrant fields offers not just a respire from the bustling town center but a chance to taste and learn about the importance of lemons in local cuisine and culture.
  • Enjoy a Leisurely Stroll along Marina Grande: Nothing captures the essence of Amalfi like a walk on Marina Grande. The stunning views of the Tyrrhenian Sea, lined by colorful buildings and bustling with life, provide the perfect backdrop for memorable photos and relaxed moments.

Each of these activities offers a unique way to connect with the heart of Amalfi. They remind us why this small village is listed among the most beautiful places on the coast of Italy.

Making the Most of Your Day Trips from Positano Italy

Maximizing day trip experiences from Positano means having a well-thought-out plan. You will find that planning in advance is not just advisable; it becomes crucial for snagging the best excursions to places like the stunning Amalfi or the picturesque town of Sorrento. Whether you opt for a private car to wind down the coast line or a small group tour to venture through ancient ruins, the key lies in securing your bookings before summer crowds take over.

Considering the season shapes your day’s narrative. Visiting Mount Vesuvius or taking a Capri boat tour during the high season demands early reservations to avoid disappointment. However, the magic of Southern Italy blooms in the quieter months, offering a more relaxed atmosphere and easier access to popular destinations like the famous Blue Grotto or the beautiful island itself. Finally, selecting the right type of excursion, be it a leisurely boat trip around Capri or a detailed tour of Pompeii, can transform a single day into a treasure trove of memories. Here, the choice between guided explorations and private tours emerges as pivotal, setting the stage for an experience tailored precisely to your dreams.

Essential Travel Preparation

Embarking on day trips from Positano Italy grants you the liberty to explore Southern Italy’s most dazzling jewels. Planning in advance is your passport to a hassle-free adventure. A three-day itinerary paves the way to discover the coast of Italy and could be part of a bigger trip exploring more of this incredible country . Every moment planned will unfurl the beautiful canvas of nearby attractions like Amalfi, Capri, and the ancient ruins cradled in this picturesque region.

Among the essential items to pack, never underestimate the sun’s power along the coast. Sun protection cannot be overstated, with sunscreen, hats, and sunglasses being indispensable. A day under the Mediterranean sun requires staying hydrated. Keep a bottle of water at your side to quench your thirst during your explorations, ensuring you stay refreshed whether you’re strolling through lemon groves or embarking on a Capri boat tour.

For those drawn to the azure allure of the sea, considering what to pack for a boat trip shapes the day’s enjoyment. Lightweight clothing will keep you at ease under the sun, while soft drinks and snacks can enhance the experience. Remember, a small boat navigating towards the famous Blue Grotto or circling the stunning coastline will have limited amenities. Thus, your preparation can turn a simple outing into an unforgettable journey.
