Blenheim Palace half-day tour

A monumental Italianate mansion built in exuberant Baroque style, Blenheim Palace was the brainchild of John Churchill, Duke of Marlborough. He was awarded the estate and the funds to build his colossal new home by Queen Anne, following his victory over the French at the Battle of Blenheim.

Today, Blenheim is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and its history and secrets can be unlocked on a private half-day tour of the palace and its vast grounds. The tour looks into why the construction of the palace was mired in difficulty, why relationships between the family and their architects were fraught, and what financial woes ensued after a royal change of heart midway through the project.

The tour begins at the palace entrance, where you meet your professional guide for a private tour of the palace.

Blenheim has remained in the same family since it was awarded to John Churchill, the first Duke of Marlborough in 1705 and today the 12th Duke and Duchess and their family still live in one wing of the imposing house.

Over the years Blenheim has had many public faces and was used as hospital for wounded soldiers during World War I and a home for evacuees in World War II.

It has been returned to its former glory however, and remains one of the most notable stately homes in the country and the only non-royal and non-episcopal house to retain the title of palace.

During your visit your tour takes you through the ornately gilded State Rooms, which are decorated with portraits, tapestries and fine furniture. Your guide will highlight interesting aspects of each and elaborate on the stories behind them.

Blenheim was also the ancestral home of Sir Winston Churchill and you also get to visit the room where he was born and can view a small exhibition dedicated to his life. After the State Rooms is the magnificent Long Library, a massive room lined with bookshelves housing over 10,000 books, many of which are of great importance.

Your tour ends after approximately an hour in the private family chapel. You’re then welcome to explore the formal gardens, including the Water Terraces, the intricate Italian Garden and The Churchill Memorial Garden, among others. Alternatively, if time permits, you may wish to take one of the walking trails around the parkland or visit the Pleasure Gardens with its giant hedge maze and butterfly house.

There are several cafés and restaurants on the estate should you wish to have lunch (not included).

How to get there

Plan a Visit to Blenheim Palace

blenheim castle tours

Winston Churchill's birthplace was Blenheim Palace by happy accident. That's just one of many reasons to plan a day at this amazing place.

Blenheim is more than another one of England's stately homes . The home of the Dukes of Marlborough, an easy day trip from London, is:

  • a UNESCO World Heritage Site
  • a stunning example of 18th century English Baroque style
  • a memorial to a great British hero and the birthplace of Winston Churchill
  • One of the finest examples of the work of 18th century landscape architect Launcelot "Capability" Brown.
  • a wonderful backdrop for family activities, virtually year round.
New since 2016, tour the upstairs and downstairs life of Blenheim Palace with new areas opened for guided tours for the first time. And visit the private apartments, where the Duke of Marlborough and his family live. Find out more about the new guided tours on the Blenheim Palace website.

A Home of British Heroes

John Churchill, the first Duke of Marlborough, led British troops to victory against the combined might of the French and Bavarians at the Battle of Blenheim in 1704.

Grateful Queen Anne rewarded him with estates at Woodstock in Oxfordshire and £240,000 to build a house. Sarah, his ambitious wife, brought in the finest craftsmen (and spent another £60,000) to create a monument to her husband's heroism and to the glory of the Queen.

Many generations later, one of the 20th century's greatest figures, war time Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill, was born at Blenheim. It happened by chance. His mother, a granddaughter of the 7th Duke of Marlborough, was visiting family when little Winston decided to make his debut, a few weeks earlier than expected.

Trouble With the Builders

The designers and builders of Blenheim Palace were among the finest and most famous of the 18th century. Architect John Vanbrugh, a Renaissance man who was also a playwright, assisted by Nicholas Hawksmoor, architect of many of East London's most important 18th century churches began the building. Carver Grinling Gibbons did much of the decoration and painter James Thornhill adorned the ceilings.

But Sarah, the Duchess, balked at their prices and fell out with most of the builders.Vanbrugh left in 1716 and was never allowed on the estate again. Thornhill never painted the ceilings of the long library. I guess having the builders in hasn't changed very much.

  • self-guided tour of Blenheim Palace: the Untold Story, a new "visitor experience" featuring animated figures and sound effects
  • The pemanent Churchill Exhibition, including the room of Churchill's birth and, charmingly, some of his baby curls.
  • Several formal gardens including the Italian Garden, the Water Terraces, and, in season, a stunnng rose garden.
  • The Pleasure Gardens, reached from it's own small parking lot or, between April and October via the estate's own narrow gauge railway. The attractions include a maze, a children's adventure playground and a butterfly house.
  • special events of all kinds scheduled throughout the year.

Blenheim Park and Grounds

The 2,000 acres of Capability Brown parkland is some of the most beautiful landscaped parkland in Britain. It includes views of Vanbrugh's Grand Bridge and the lakes Brown created. The grounds can be visited on a cheaper ticket without visiting the palace.

Taj Mahal? Empire State Building? Nope! See why travelers rank Dollywood the No. 1 attraction

blenheim castle tours

Maybe they'll always have Paris. Some indeed have left their hearts in San Francisco. And others might agree that Disneyland is "The Happiest Place on Earth." But apparently most world travelers are more partial to down-home Appalachian fun, naming Dollywood as the No. 1 attraction to which they most want to return.

A report conducted by UK-based travel insurance specialists InsureandGo found Dollywood earned the highest “Come Back” score of more than 450 landmarks worldwide. InsureandGo also ranked countries and cities as part of their report; Japan was the top-ranked country and London the top-ranked city.

To determine the attractions list, the company reviewed thousands of online reviews for content, attraction rating and noted reviews from guests saying they hoped to return again. Using a weighted scoring system, they assigned “Come Back” scores to the attractions on a scale of 1-100. Dollywood scored a 94 out of 100 to top the list.

“Dollywood is both a theme park and a nod to the local Appalachian culture as well as living legend herself, Dolly Parton," the website noted. "Online reviews praise the park for its fantastic food and decorations during the Christmas period, while many visitors recommend getting the two-day pass, so you can explore everything there is to offer.”

Disneyland, Yosemite and the Empire State Building are just some attractions that ranked below Dollywood

The top global attractions people most want to return to, according to the study:

  • Disneyland in Anaheim, California
  • Stone Mountain Park in Stone Mountain, Georgia
  • Warner Bros. Studio Tour in London
  • Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire, United Kingdom/Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona (tie)
  • Crazy Horse Memorial in Crazy Horse, South Dakota/Hampton Court Palace in London (tie)
  • Tokyo Disneyland in Tokyo
  • Yosemite National Park in California/Universal Studios Florida in Orlando/Busch Gardens Tampa (tie)

By comparison, the Empire State Building ranked No. 41, while the Taj Mahal was No. 31. The Las Vegas Strip was No. 36 in travelers' hearts.
