UK boy band A1 on their Dubai show and finding gratitude 25 years on
The english-norwegian group will premiere a new song during their concert at the agenda on friday.

Where is David Guetta when you need him?
It’s a quip shared by members of enduring English-Norwegian boy band A1 who are bringing their 25-year anniversary tour to Dubai with a concert at The Agenda on Friday.
"Proper song writing is coming back and by that I mean actual songs where you got a verse, a bridge and a chorus. And I love that because I have been personally disconnected from music maybe for the last 10 to 15 years,” says singer Paul Marazzi.
“And now with DJs like David Guetta getting some of their inspiration from our era in the '90s it’s a great thing and he is more than welcome to sample some of our work."
While Marazzi is happy for the French DJ and his peers to turn their attention to A1's hits, co-vocalist Mark Read says there are plenty of hidden gems – particularly from later albums such as 2010s Waiting for Daylight and 2012's Rediscovered – that are worth remixing.
One thing for sure, there will be no disagreements about the set list on Friday night.
Celebrating their silver jubilee, A1 have been packing in arenas in Europe and Asia this year with hit laden concerts featuring fan favourites such as Caught in the Middle and Same Old Brand New You.
All that touring has inspired the group to try their hand at new songs, one of which is directly inspired by their time on the road.
“The new track is called Call Me When You Land and we will perform it for the first time in Dubai,” confirms singer Christian Ingebrigtsen.
“It is one of those songs that is inspired by what a lot of us have gone through in the pandemic and appreciating our time with our loved ones.
“The title is really one of those lines that we often say to each other at airports, but it took on a greater meaning during those challenging times.”
The workload in general has been less arduous for A1 in comparison to their heyday at the turn of the century.
Formed in 1998, the four member group, which also includes vocalist Ben Adams, emerged in an era where artists were expected to record new albums annually and tour consistently.
After their 1999 debut album Here We Come was moderately received, the group hit their stride with the 2000 follow up The A List , home to a marvellous cover of A-ha's classic Take On Me that topped the UK charts.
Intense period
The group then went on a seven-year hiatus in 2002 after releasing further hits Caught in the Middle and Make It Good .
While A1 shined at the top of the charts, it was a more intense period on the ground with gruelling tours and coming to grips with the emergence of social media.
They also became one of the major UK popgroups to embrace the early trend of an online subscription service providing exclusive videos and content to fans.
"We were hands on with it and got involved in the forums and group, but I don't think we really appreciated what a beast this online format would become for the industry," Read says.
"The site got a lot of accolades and is viewed as being quite ahead of its time. If we had realised that then, we would have probably invested a little bit more time on it.”
View this post on Instagram A post shared by a1 (@a1official)
Then again, it was a period where A1 barely had moments for themselves, Marazzi notes.
With artists today such as Shawn Mendes and Justin Bieber citing mental health as one of the reasons for respectively cancelling their tours, Read says the pressure that comes with music success is underestimated.
"If I am honest with you, I don't think we as a group took care of each other as much as we should have," he says.
"We were so caught up in the whirlwind and the labels were obviously pushing many of us artists so hard that we didn’t have time to really recharge.”
Marazzi cites the mental and physical exhaustion for the group's temporary break in 2002.
"We had an amazing five-year run that was just non-stop and eventually, little by little, we hit a wall," he says. "I am just grateful now that mental health is part of the industry conversation, and it is as important as making the bottom line.”
That hard work has also paid off for A1 enjoying themselves as they approach their third decade.
"We don't have to worry any more about releasing a new song or hitting number one on the charts,” Ingebrigtsen says. "We have a fantastic audience who are with us and wants to hear the old stuff."
Marazzi sums it up best: “We have reached a plateau of gratitude and enlightenment and we are happy with that.”

Audi A1 Sportback 30 TFSI (2023) Review
Ian Lamming goes on tour in Audi’s latest A1
May 4, 2023
HOW well do we know our cars? Really. Really?
Most of us flit from here to there and back again in our daily lives seldom giving the jalopy a second thought. As long as it gets us there and back again, how many people care that much?
The majority of cars do the job well enough, in a fuss-free manner, and we reach journey’s end with little regard to how they perform.
What we need is a proper drive and for the A1 Sportback this comes in the form of an eight hour sojourn up and down the dreaded M6.
Until this point the Audi had been fine and dandy. It may only have three cylinders and a 1.0 litre capacity but that’s more than enough to nip around country lanes and towns. It’s peppy and the six speed manual gearbox and light clutch are lovely to operate.
The suspension is also excellent to traverse the asphalt ploughed fields we call roads nowadays and the Python yellow livery is more than enough to cheer a dull day and give you a healthy tan on a sunny one.
But the real test comes on a 200 mile jaunt south and back again – that’s four hours behind the wheel in each direction, surely a shatteringly tiring journey by the day’s end?
My first thought is ‘if only I’d booked a bigger more luxurious car in which to travel’. But wait. Hang on. I’m absolutely fine.
The 1.0 is perfectly comfortable at motorway speeds with more than enough thrust to accelerate onto the slip road and cruise nicely in the traffic. And just look at the trip computer, it’s reading 59.7mpg. When topping up, I’d calculated the tank range based on 44mpg so I’m now going to have plenty of fuel left when I reach home.
On this occasion I’m leaving the electric driving aids on. The ‘lane assist’, that stops you drifting across the carriageway, is invaluable for two reasons. The obvious one is that it stops you drifting across the carriageway but more importantly it makes you more disciplined with your indicating. If you don’t signal then the steering wheel fights you as you try and cross the white lines. This is great because it makes you concentrate and it keeps you awake.
It may be Audi’s smallest car but it is a little pocket of luxury. So the Google Earth-type satnav is brilliant as are the virtual clocks – you can even change the way they look and have the map right in front of you.
There is cruise control if you want it and all the switches and controls are perfectly placed. The infotainment (that’s the radio to the more mature drivers) is superb. It is by Sonos and when you hook it up with your phone to play your favourite tunes the sound is concert hall in quality and transforms the ambience of the interior.
Lengthy journeys generally spell long periods of discomfort but not in the A1. Those firm and supportive seats hold you in an osteopathic embrace lining up the vertebrae and spreading the load on muscle and flesh. The result is a pain-free back and bottom, no tightening of the back, shoulder and neck muscles, so when you arrive at your destination you feel fresh and relaxed and not dreading the trip back.
A1 looks the part too, much bigger than the previous model and you can be fooled into thinking it’s the bigger A3 thanks to its LED lights, slotted bumper, deep grille and airdam. The smart alloys and attractive rear end finish off what is an attractive looking, sporty and luxurious hatchback.
By the end of the test I know the A1 inside and out and am nothing but impressed by its accommodation, aesthetics and driving dynamics. So if you are popping to see your local dealer for a test drive, why not go for a quick 400 mile flit around the block – just don’t tell the salesman.

- NCAA baseball tournament bracket predictions about a week before selections, by D1Baseball

We say it each week, but the NCAA tournament picture is fluid until Selection Monday, and this week is no exception as there are several shakeups in the very latest D1Baseball Field of 64 Projections.
In the latest iteration of our projected field, the most notable changes are in the top eight, where there are two changes this week — Florida State and East Carolina are out after tough series losses over the weekend, while sizzling hot Georgia and Wake Forest entered the top eight this week.
The caveat to Wake and Georgia entering the top eight is that, particularly in the case of Wake, a series loss to NC State this weekend would knock them back out of the top eight and put it in a situation where it would need to win some games in the ACC tournament. We feel very confident about Georgia staying in the top eight with struggling Florida heading to Athens this weekend.
The final few host spots in the 9-16 seed range remain a classic beauty pageant of teams. Basically, what do you prefer from a metric and resume standpoint. This week, we removed South Carolina, UC Santa Barbara and Duke as hosts, while Oklahoma State, Wake Forest and Oregon State entered the Top 16 this week. We discussed the Deacs above, while the Pokes swept Texas Tech last weekend and remain in solid shape an RPI and standings standpoint. The Beavs also had a strong week with a home series sweep over UCLA and remain in solid shape from an RPI standpoint.
Our belief is that whoever wins the Pac-12 showdown between the Beavs and Wildcats this weekend will find their way to a host site. For now, we’re taking the Beavers straight up in that one. NC State would be another team to keep close tabs on this weekend. Should the Wolfpack win that series at home against Wake this weekend, they likely would find their way to the hosting line. As you can see, there’s a ton at stake this weekend, and most exciting, in conference tournaments, which begin next week.
The SEC leads all conferences with nine teams in the field, while the ACC and Big 12 each have eight teams in the field this week. The Sun Belt and Pac-12 are tied with four teams each, while the Big East, Big Ten, Big West, Coastal Athletic and Conference USA are all multi-bid leagues.
Our projections are assembled each week by the trio of Mark Etheridge, Kendall Rogers, and Aaron Fitt. Together, the trio has more than 60 years of experience covering college baseball and putting together regional projections.
Let’s unveil our projected field of 64 (parentheses indicate national seed) :
