Itā€™s a dream come true for people interested in long-term travel. So, how do you turn that dream into a reality?

People often shy away from the idea of working and travelingĀ because it sounds difficult. Images of expensive visas and painfully slow bureaucracy are conjured up. But, itā€™s much easier than you thinkā€”especially if you go abroad with an established programā€”because many let you work abroad without experience .

Some will pay you, some wonā€™t, and some will make you pay themā€”so make sure you exhaust all your options and know what you can afford before you start applying.

Not to mention the teaching programs in Spain – both private and thru the government. There are something like 5K positions for English speakers in the public government system, and the private have 60-hundreds depending on which. I did the North American Language Assistants program from 2007-10.

WOW. There is so much opportunity out thereā€”it’s almost hard to believe!

I am happy to provide links if you’d like to add them.

Cracking list. Another couple of teaching options are Chile’s English Open Doors and Speak Italy. Speak also have a teen programmer. I guess from your point of view working in the USA isn’t abroad but Brits and other nationals can use CCUSA to be placed in summer camps in the USA, as well as the other destinations you mention (those from outside the US are given the option of selecting country specific websites when visiting the url you give).

Another idea for Brits, and a few other commonwealth countries, is the Winston Churchill Memorial Trust.

And, lastly, I edit the Jobs Abroad Bulletin which lists new vacancies around the world very week (or two): https://www.jobsabroadbulletin.co.uk/latestjobs/

Great resources here. One correction I might add is that Club Med is Chinese owned now as of 2019. Fosum finally managed to take them over which should be a positive inflow of cash. Fosum also recently bought defunct Thomas Cook.

How do I find these opportunities?

Thank you SO much for all the links here! It’s amazing and truly inspiring – knowing that we have a choice and a chance to get out of the shell and explore our beautiful world, helping society as well.

If you think volunteering abroad is just for hipster teens and ambitious college kids, think again, my friend! Have you ever heard of volunteer programs abroad for adults? If youā€™re tired of the corporate grind or burned out because you worked through your twenties, then volunteer abroad programs for adults are the perfect opportunity to try something new, discover a different career path, or just do good and have some adventure along the way.

Three adult volunteers working outside

Find adult volunteer programs abroad that support conservation efforts & spend all of your days outdoors!

Hereā€™s GoAbroadā€™s take on all things volunteer abroad for adults. Read on for some serious inspiration + the programs that can help you get there.

Why you should volunteer abroad over 30

Believe it or not, people over 30 are usually highly sought by volunteer organizations. Why? Generally, the 30+ crowd has a certain amount of work experience and maturity under his or her belt. Theyā€™ve learned to work with different kinds of people and are generally more patient and tolerant. On the other hand, young-blood fresh out of school hardly have any of this world wisdom and often need more training when it comes to such soft skills.

Volunteer organizations also need people with specialist skills. As a person over 30, youā€™re more likely to have developed and perhaps perfected a particular skill set, whether itā€™s managing a classroom of 40 rambunctious teenagers or drafting legal documents to incorporate businesses. Because older individuals have specific competencies, program providers may have an easier time slotting them into the right placements and customizing their volunteer travel programs for adults to suit participant strong points.

The cost of living in Australia, especially in big cities like Sydney, is likely more than what youā€™re used to in your home country. So, it is important to budget accordingly to make sure you are financially prepared upon arrival and until you begin to make a regular paycheck.

Here is a rough estimate of your initial start-up costs (in USD):

Flight: Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  $1,200

Program Fee: Ā Ā Ā Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  $1,690

Visa: Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  $350

Savings: Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā Ā  $3,394*

Total: Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  $6,634

* this total amount is a requirement of the Working Holiday Visa, however, it is a good amount to have to make sure you have enough money to live comfortably until you start working.

Average Weekly Budget:

Your salary will depend on how often you decide to work and what work you end up getting into. However, you are guaranteed to make Australian minimum wage ($19.49 AUD/hour), and as long as youā€™re working 28-38 hours per week, youā€™ll be making enough to live and travel on.

Wages and rent are paid weekly which makes budgeting your paychecks much easier:

work travel programs for adults

These weekly costs will, of course, depend on your personal spending habits, where you live, how many hours you work, and if your job provides a higher pay/accommodation, but you should expect to be able to save some of your paycheck every week.

Although you will most likely spend any extra cash on travel opportunities in between jobs, you have the potential to make back your start up costs:

Monthly Savings = Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā Ā $410.20 AUD

Yearly Savings =Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā $4,922.40 AUD

After a day at the beach, you’ll get dressed up for a fun night on the town! Meet the group at one of our favorite party bars before starting our Sydney Pub Crawl.

Sunday: Your first week down under comes to an end. The itinerary is over, but your adventure continues ā€“ on Sunday our team will assist you with any remaining questions youā€™ve got and also onward travel planning.

*** Welcome week activities are subject to change based on seasonality.

During your first week in Sydney, you’ll attend a brief orientation to prepare you for your job and housing search. Before you arrive, your bank account will already be opened ā€“ you wonā€™t have to research Australian banks or finalize your account. Instead, the team will have prepared all of your paperwork in advance. They will also set you up for the Australian tax system and give you your Tax ID so you file taxes before you leave.

During orientation you will meet the team and get all the information necessary to start planning your time in Australia. You will learn about life in Australia, when to work, where to work, where to travel and when to travel.

At orientation, you will:

  • Learn about Australian culture!
  • Review the yearly job market; what jobs are abundant and where.
  • Be introduced to online job boards for future jobs.
  • Sign up for any required courses you may need to be eligible for work, like the RSA (Responsible Service of Alcohol) if you plan to work in environments where you serve alcohol (resorts, bars, cruise ships)*
  • Receive assistance in finding short or long term accommodation.
  • Receive tax ID and learn how to file taxes when you leave the country.

*These courses may or not be available, as not all services are fully up and running

Job Consultation

You will have the opportunity to meet with a job consultant and talk about your resume, what other skills you may have that arenā€™t listed on your resume, and to set your expectations for the type of work that you would be best suited for.

After the job consultant gets to know you a little better, you will be put on an Availability List along with all the other travelers. This list shows who is available to work, what their skills and preferences are as well as who is traveling and unavailable for work. This list is constantly changing as 50-60 employers call every day looking for employees to start working ASAP.

Our in-country staff will call you to let you know when you have been matched with a job, which you can take or turn down. Travelers who are open minded to the work they do may start working the day after they are placed on the Availability list, where others may hold out for their preferred position or decide to travel first. If you’re looking to work, you should expect to have a job within 2-3 weeks.

You may use this method to find work later in the year, though most travelers prefer to use the online job board to find subsequent work, especially if they have relocated outside of Sydney.

Most of your job opportunities will be in the Sydney area and in the southern region of Australia around Melbourne, Brisbane, and Cairns. Resort and agriculture jobs are offered in the Northern Territory, New South Wales, Queensland, and Victoria. Greenheart Travelā€™s partner has professional relationships with trusted employers around Australia who pay fair wages and alert us whenever they have positions available.

What are the most common job types?

Hospitality, customer service, and office work are by far the most common job type as Australian companies report that the high level of service in the US and Canada tends to produce workers who are well-suited for these types of positions.

Seasonal work in amusement parks, resorts, and on offshore cruises, etc. are great positions for more consistent and long-term jobs (3-6 months) where jobs in restaurants, bars, hostels, and hotels are widely available for shorter contracts.

Working on farms and WWOOFing (World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms) are also popular among Working Holiday travelers who want to experience a different type of work outside of a city.

Can I change jobs while I am there?

Yes. Many jobs are seasonal, so it is likely you will hold more than one job in your host country. Also, visa requirements dictate that you will not be allowed to work for a given employer for a period longer than six months. Due to these factors, most Work and Travel travelers hold 2-3 jobs over the duration of their stay, which is a great way to travel to different parts of the country and experience as much authentic Aussie culture as you can!

You will have access to an online job board which will enable you to check employment postings wherever you are. You should also call or visit the Center in Sydney regularly to keep informed of new work opportunities.

What will my first week look like?

Your first week is a time of exploration, preparation, and fun!

All programs begin on Thursdays. The program start date that you select from our website will be your arrival date. Our travelers use this time to settle into their accommodation, review their itinerary for the week, explore a bit, and recharge for the rest of the welcome week ahead!

The next 6 days will be dedicated to reviewing job resources, becoming familiar with local transportation, learning about housing, solidifying tax documents, meeting new friends, and getting to know Australia!

Where will I live during welcome week?

We have all of our travelers meet up at a hostel in the center of Sydney so everyone can get acquainted! For the first week you will live in shared hostel accommodation.

Where will I live when I am hired?

Shared flats, hostels, Airbnbs, and homestays are all potential accommodation options based on the lifestyle you would like to lead (i.e. backpacker or sedentary).

Some jobs, especially those on resorts and farms, include housing or subsidized housing. Our in-country partner does take housing requests within the Sydney and Melbourne area. Regardless of where you plan to live, they are happy to provide guidance and resources to help you find accommodation.

As a note, Sydney generally has the highest cost-of-living. In Sydney, you will likely pay $160-$200 for a shared room per week. If you want your own room, it is more expensive. If you are staying a while, think about renting an apartment with some friends or moving in with some Aussies, as it is generally the cheapest option. However, some jobs will only be short term (1-2 months) and it can be difficult to find a short or open lease, so you may need to spend more towards $200 AUD/week to stay at a hostel. Melbourne and other major cities have a lower cost of living than in Sydney, but most jobs are available in and around Sydney.

Do I have to stay for the full 12 months?

No, you don’t have to stay for the full 12 months.

We recommend that our travelers plan a trip that is 3 months or longer, but it isn’t mandatory. In our experience, we find that it takes our travelers a month or so to get acclimated in their new surroundings. The first few weeks are used to secure jobs, accommodation, and tax information. Having a handful of months in Australia will allow you to fully settle in, work, and travel comfortably.

If you’re looking for programs that range from 1, 2, or 3 months, take a look at a few of these program options:

  • Work Abroad ArgentinaĀ
  • Thailand Business Internship
  • Homestay AbroadĀ

How long does it take the get a job?

This varies. During the busy season when lots of jobs are available, sometimes several job prospects are already awaiting you when you arrive and you can start work right away. Other times it can take up to 6 weeks. Usually if there is a delay it is because you have rejected initial job prospects because they did not meet your expectations for some reason.

Can I get a career-oriented job?

The visa you’ll get only allows you to work at any one job for 6 months or less. SinceĀ employers looking to fill high-skill positions generally want someone for longer than that, it’s unlikely (although not impossible) that you’d get a more professional or high-skilled position.Ā This program caters to people looking for a more casual work experience, and who are more focused on travel.

Can I work for longer than one year?

United States citizens are eligible for a second Working Holiday visa if they spend 3 months working in Northern Australia in one of the following industries:

  • plant and animal cultivation
  • fishing and pearling
  • tree farming and felling
  • tourism and hospitality

This means you could work for three months in one place, then have 21 more months to work and travel as you please in Australia! Our in-country staff will help you secure this type of work if you’re interested in taking advantage of this policy.

Will I need a car?

No, public transportation is widely available in Australia, especially within the cities and urban areas.

Will I meet other travelers?

Yes, we’ve designed this as a group program! Each start date allows for up to 25 travelers.

Our welcome week includes an orientation in addition to numerous group activities that allow you to meet a bunch of individuals who are also looking to work and travel throughout the country. Since you’re all on the same program, you’ll already have a lot in common!

What qualities does Greenheart Travel look for in Australia Work Abroad applicants?

We look for applicants that are open-minded, flexible, adventurous, hardworking, and communicative!

Open-mindedness and flexibility are qualities that we seek because it is not uncommon that travelers work 2-3 jobs during their stay abroad. Not everyone will start off with their dream job, BUT everyone gains valuable experienceā€”the more open-minded you are, the sooner you will find work!

Adventurous individuals are great for this program because Australia provides ample opportunity for travelers to be engaged in nature and participate in exciting activities.

We seek hardworking and communicative individuals because each traveler must be willing to do their share of work in order to solidify housing and employment. Our team works hard to assist and support our travelers, but travelers must be willing to attend job interviews and communicate with our team abroad.

1. Ā  Start Your ApplicationĀ  Here .Ā  You will be sent more information as well as the link to our application portal to begin your formal application.

2. Submit Basic Program Information:Ā  The first step in our application portal will be basic things like your chosen start date, etc.

3. Submit your Application Fee : A $300 fee is required in order to apply for the program. This is subtracted from your total program fee. If we are unable to accept you following your interview (very unlikely!) we will refund your application fee in full.

4. Ā  Complete Application & Documents : Ā Provide more detailed information about yourself in Part 2 of the application. In this section, youā€™ll tell us more information like your work history, motivations for joining the program, travel history, and emergency contacts. You will also submit your documents (below) within your portal account.

5. Ā  Zoom Interview: Once you have submitted your online application and paid your application fee, you will be asked to schedule a video interview with a Greenheart Travel representative.

6. Youā€™re Accepted! Ā Woohoo! We are usually able to accept people within 1-2 weeks of their interviews.

7. Commitment Payment: Once you are accepted to the program, you will need to submit a $300 commitment payment within 14 days to confirm your spot on the program. Once you submit your commitment payment you will unlock the acceptance portion of your portal, which includes things like pre-departure videos, travel and arrival information, the Greenheart Travel Atlas, and more.

9. Book your flights, and get ready for your adventure to Australia! The rest of your balance is due 60 days before you leave.

The above process can take as little as 1 week to complete, so it’s up to you how quickly you’re able to complete each step.

What Are the Different Types Of Residential Treatment Programs For Adults?

M any people suffer from mental health conditions that hold them back in life. Depression and anxiety are two of the most common mental health conditions impacting adults.

Adults also face bipolar disorders, suicidal thoughts, personality disorders, and PTSD.

Learning about the types of residential programs is critical for helping adults decide which ones will be most effective for their mental health needs.

Four Types of Residential Treatment Facilities

Despite ongoing efforts to dispel the myths, there continues to be a stigma attached to mental health conditions.

Many people shy away from seeking residential treatment because they are embarrassed and do not want others to think poorly of them.

There are four types of long-term care programs for adults needing mental health treatment. Consider the following.

Clinical Residential Treatment Programs

Residential treatment programs offer a home-like environment for mental health patients. A strong sense of community helps people build self-esteem.

These programs provide some of the following features.

  • Intensive daily treatment
  • Individual psychotherapy
  • Group therapy
  • Vocational and educational counseling
  • Treatment for addictions

Group Residential Communities

There are also group residential communities that benefit those with mental health disorders .

These programs also offer a family-like atmosphere. Group homes improve individuals' quality of life and help treat psychiatric disorders that may prevent adults from living safely independently.

The following are some of the standard features of these programs.

  • Stable, long-term living arrangements
  • Clinical treatment provided off-site
  • Length of stay catered to the needs of the individual

Work-Based Residential Programs

In these residential treatment programs , work plays a critical role in treating psychiatric conditions like depression.

People learn new skills and build self-esteem as they venture through each day in the program. Work-based programs offer the following features.

  • A range of therapeutic work programs
  • Opportunities to learn new skills for employment
  • A variety of clinical treatment options

Apartment-Based Communities

Some apartment-based communities allow individuals to remain independent while receiving the mental health treatment they need.

Here, residents form supportive relationships and receive therapeutic intervention for their mental health conditions.

Consider the following features of these programs.

  • Visits from mental health clinicians
  • A therapeutic gathering place for residents
  • Greater independence than other programs
  • Various treatment options

What Are the Benefits of Seeking a Residential Program?

While some people can manage their mental health conditions without issue, others struggle to survive each day alone. With so many residential programs available, it can become challenging to discover the right one.

When mental health issues impact a person's day-to-day life and make it difficult for them to function, it is time to consider a residential treatment program that can offer a higher degree of care.

Research is critical for finding the appropriate program and helps people seek medical intervention and direction.

Residential treatment programs are highly beneficial for many people.

These programs give people a sense of community and provide a more stable existence so they can learn to manage their mental health constraints better and live life to the fullest.

No one should ever feel ashamed of getting professional medical help for their mental health. Seek your doctor about your condition to determine which modality of treatment and residential program will be most beneficial.

Now is an ideal time to embrace the options and get professional help with your mental health.

Preparing older adults for todayā€™s job market through digital training and upskilling..

Group Of Retired Seniors Attending IT Class In Community Centre With Teacher

Older adults face higher unemployment rates and more barriers to good jobs in todayā€™s market, from age discrimination to a lack of confidence in their digital skills. Obstacles to well-paying, secure jobs can unfairly prevent adults over 50 from earning a living wage and participating in their local economies.Ā

For more than 60 years, AARP Foundation has been developing and supporting workforce initiatives designed to help older adults with low income return to the workforce or advance to better jobs. Learn more about our programs:

  • Digital Skills Ready@50+ Ā Ā

Work for Yourself@50+

Funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Labor, AARP Foundation SCSEP organizes training assignments that help participants build job skills while giving back to their community. The program does this by matching unemployed adults over 55 with local nonprofits and public agencies so they can increase skills and build self-confidence while earning a modest training wage. The majority of SCSEP participants end up with unsubsidized employment.

In the 2022 fiscal calendar year (July 1, 2022 ā€“ June 30, 2023), the program served more than 11,000 older adults and helped them generate $96.2 million in new income. Today, we run 113 SCSEP offices in 19 states and Puerto Rico, harnessing the collaborative strength of 3,500 nonprofit and government host agencies.Ā Ā  Learn more about SCSEP .

AARP FoundationĀ SCSEPĀ is funded by a $46,889,529 million grant from the U.S. Department of Labor. This funding provides 90% of the support forĀ SCSEP, with AARP Foundation matching 10%.

BACK TO WORK 50+

BACK TO WORK 50+ has been doing just what its name says ā€” helping people over 50 get back to work ā€” since 2013. The program works with trained career transition coaches who host in-person and online coaching sessions that help unemployed older adults build the skills and confidence they need to compete for high-quality jobs, at no cost to them.Ā

The program is available nationally through webinars and in eight states through 13 nonprofit organizations and community colleges.

In 2023, nearly 12,700 older adults living with low income received the career guidance, training, and coaching they needed to seek meaningful employment through AARP Foundationā€™s BACK TO WORK 50+. Of those, over 1,200 received group or 1:1 coaching and 463 obtained employment after being in the program. Ā  Learn more about BACK TO WORK 50+ .

Digital Skills Ready@50+

In collaboration with Older Adults Technology Services (OATS) from AARP, we created Digital Skills Ready@50+ā„¢ to be part of the solution. Made possible through a generous grant from Google.org through the Tides Foundation, Digital Skills Ready@50+was designed to meet a pressing need: providing older adults the digital essentials to help them find and secure jobs, change careers or explore entrepreneurship.ā€Æ

In 2022, we partnered with 110 community organizations and trained over 9,700 participants across eight states: Arizona, Georgia, Illinois, Louisiana, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina and Texas. Learn more about Digital Skills Ready@50+ .

The Work for Yourself@50+ program makes it easy for older adults to explore self-employment options, with free tools and resources that can help them increase their financial stability.

From in-person workshops to online training modules and incubator programs, the Work for Yourself@50+ program features a robust set of offerings that cover the essentials to know when working for yourself. Since it launched in 2016, Work for Yourself@50+ has served more than 52,000 people across the country.Ā Ā  Learn more about Work for Yourself@50+ .

17 Reasons for Living in a Stationary Travel Trailer as a Senior Adult

17 Reasons for Living in a Stationary Travel Trailer as a Senior Adult: Today, I’m sharing the many reasons I’m choosing senior adult stationary travel trailer living.

Well, that’s kind of a mouthful, isn’t it… “17 reason for living in a stationary travel trailer as a senior adult”.

But, that is exactly what is happening!

My Wee Abode is now a 200 square foot travel trailer. The tagline, “Big Inspiration for Small Home Living” has never rang so true!

senior adult stationary travel trailer living sides of travel trailers

Moving from an Apartment to a Travel Trailer

If you’ve been following along with the ‘adventures’ of My Wee Abode… you know the story. But, for those that are new, let me briefly fill you in the MWA moving adventures!

At the beginning of 2016, I moved into the original My Wee Abode. A 400 square foot loft apartment that had no kitchen to speak of, a living area , bedroom, walk-in-closet and rather large bathroom (well, at least for a tiny bathroom).

MWA was the first home in over 25 years that I could call ‘all my own’. I have LOTS of wonderful memories in that tiny loft apartment.

MWA 2.0…

Fast-forward to April of 2022. My mom, who had been diagnosed with MCI (which eventually progressed to Alzheimer’s) in 2015, was now struggling big-time with her memory. Living in an elite memory-care community still had so many ‘fails’, my siblings and I decided it was time for Mom to live with me.

My Wee Abode 2.0 was ‘born’. A 934 square foot apartment in a 55+ community. This second version of MWA boasted 2 larger bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, living area, and kitchen with plenty of storage through-out the apartment… as well as a balcony that housed a washer/dryer closet.

Mom and I spent many days/nights together at our wee abode. And so did my siblings, who regularly helped in caring for Mom while I had plenty of respite time. I know Mom was happier living with me, and the Lord taught me much in those two years.

MWA the Trailer…

So, early in December 2023, Mom entered hospice at home because she was eating so little. She contracted a virus 4 days later, but recouped quite well. However, in early January, she came down with another type of virus (we are thinking it was thrush), and she quickly went downhill with her health. She went home to be with the Lord on January 26th.

Unfortunately, I couldn’t afford to stay at the 55+ community by myself, and I started thinking about other options for the next MWA.

Through two months of processing, counseling, and praying (lots of praying and waiting on the Lord), My Wee Abode the Trailer was born! It’s interesting… The Lord has orchestrated all my moves to be in February, March, or April.

My Wee Abode the Trailer

Before I start sharing the 17 reasons for living in a stationary travel trailer as a senior adult, I thought you might enjoy knowing a bit more about the new (to-me) MWA trailer. šŸ™‚

As you can read below, I purchased a 2010 Keystone Springdale 24′ travel trailer.

image of travel trailer with details

Several of the features I love about this trailer are the kitchen is located at one end of the trailer, there is a slider feature that holds the sofa and additional cabinets, there is a full wardrobe with doors in the ‘hall’, the bathroom sink is located outside of the bathroom (which gives me a ‘water closet’), and I have a separate bedroom. Oh… and there is A LOT of storage!

senior adult stationary travel trailer living floor plan

I’ll be sharing more of the inside of “MWAT” soon! (Not sure I like the sound of “MWAT”… hmmm.) But for now, here are a couple of sneak peek photos. Warning… it’s VERY 2010!

trailer slider with sofa and overhead cabinets in dark colors

Now, if you think THAT is bad…

senior adult stationary travel trailer living dinette with cabinets and television

The window valances have already been removed from the whole trailer (how-to coming soon). But, how do you like that yellow-gold??? The bottom cushion covers got washed, and I think they shrunk! LOL! That’s okay… they are being replaced, as well, since this will not only be my dining area, but my workspace, too!

What else do YOU think I’m going to change?

Now that you’ve gotten a sneak-peek, let’s get into the reasons WHY I’ve chosen to live in a stationary camper.

17 Reasons for Senior Adult Stationary Travel Trailer Living

1. own your home for a fraction of a mortgage.

For the first time in my life, I own my own home! And I paid, (are you ready for this?), $9800 for my 2010 travel trailer!

Some people may argue that it’s not a real home, but exactly what is a “real” home?

  • Somewhere you can rest your head at night (and get a good night’s sleep at that… which I do!)
  • A place to cook meals for you and others
  • Includes comfortable living space where you can cozy-up on a sofa and watch TV
  • Now-a-days, a place where you can work remotely
  • Includes a bathroom and shower/tub
  • Somewhere to make memories
  • A space where you can add your personal touches and decor (coming soon!)
  • Additional areas for company (the grands will be sleeping over soon)
  • A place to call your own!

I think my trailer covers all of that and more!

2. Great Alternative to a Tiny Home

Comparably speaking, purchasing an actual tiny home can be quite affordable versus a full-size home.

If we want to take it a step further, a travel trailer (especially a used trailer), is even more affordable and a great alternative to a “brick-and-mortar” tiny house.

3. Living Expenses are LOW!

Okay… I’ve let you know how much I paid for the actual trailer, but what about the land the trailer is parked on?

Blessings upon blessings! God is always good, and He has always taken care of me in ways that I can’t ask or imagine.

My current landlord is the mother to my dear friend and former boss, Dan. He and his wife (one of my closest friends) are also living in a stationary travel trailer… right in front of mine (or behind mine, depending on how you look at it)!

sides of trailers in side yard

Dan’s mom, Janet, has been a dear friend of mine for many years, as well, and she graciously agreed to let me park on her property. The very small amount of rent I pay includes electric, water, parking, laundry facilities, and even some room in an overflow fridge in the garage! I am beyond thankful, and again… so blessed!

Also, I don’t have a lot of space for extra food, so the grocery bill is lower… I’m only buying things I actually NEED to eat. Hopefully this will help with making my body match-up to my tiny living space!

4. Feeling Safe Where I Live

Yes, I have totally felt safe where I’ve lived in the past. However, thinking about moving into a trailer full-time had me wondering if I would be able to park it in a safe place.

Living in the ‘backyard’ of my friend’s home, in a safe area, helps to ensure a good night’s sleep.

5. You Don’t Need a Towing Vehicle

When you live in a stationary travel trailer, there is no need for a large truck or towing vehicle.

You can ask a friend to help (thanks, Dan!), or you can rent a vehicle to have it placed on your land/pad.

6. Living a More Simple Way of Life

Even though I’ve only been living the stationary RV lifestyle for a short time, I’ve already noticed several ways life is becoming more simple:

  • Clothing: I’ve always been pretty simple in the way I dress… comfortable and casual are my two fave styles. However, I’m having to cut down on the clothing even more because of space. This might bother some, but for me, it’s actually an easy paring-down of life.
  • Because I have less clothing, I have less laundry! This includes only having three sets of towels (which I may bring down to two), and two sets of sheets.
  • Food: Meal prep has become more simple, and more healthy, because I can only fit the ‘good’ foods in my fridge and ‘wanna-be’ pantry.
  • Decorating has become ‘less’… see more below.

This simple-way-of-life list will get updated as I settle more into the full-time trailer living lifestyle.

7. Becoming More of a Minimalist

Along with life becoming more simple, the material things in My Wee Abode are slimming down, as well.

I haven’t been to Hobby Lobby for a couple months now. I know… Say it ain’t so!

senior adult stationary travel trailer living shopping basket with credit cards and lock

There was LOTS of purging going on, along with donations, and even a moving sale. And, I have quite a bit more bins to go through. Decor items are being curated, as well.

This means there will be less home tours and more storage and organizing solutions for tiny home living.

Don’t get me wrong… decorating will be a BIG part of the trailer, especially with the renovations that are starting to happen. But, there is a lot less room and real estate to create vignettes, hang things on walls, and add plants. And, there is a lot more time for my mind to work on solutions for your home, and mine!

Plus, the storage and organizing solutions will translate to any size and type of home. So don’t hit that ‘unsubscribe button’ just yet! šŸ˜‰

8. A Lot Less to Clean

There is now approximately 200 square feet to clean in My Wee Abode. It takes a few minutes to vacuum, dishes are done as they are used (I don’t have the space to let dishes pile up), and the shower is wiped down each day because of the “h” word… humidity.

Need I say more?

9. The Challenge of Tiny Living Is Fun!

At least for me, it is!

For example, in my tiny bathroom, there is a LOT of storage space, which you’ll be privy to soon. Unfortunately, one of the spaces is built-in open shelving. Not the prettiest when you are storing personal toiletry items.

pink banner with the word challenge and women exercising in background

Challenge accepted! It took me a few days, but I believe there is a solution for making this column of open shelves look neat. Dare I say even “pretty”?!

Solving the everyday ‘issues’ of tiny living is just plain fun!

10. Gives the Opportunity for Fun Projects

Living full-time in an RV or travel trailer is giving me the opportunity to renovate and learn to fix things in my home.

I’ve done a couple of small things in the trailer, including removing the valances, replacing a cabinet locking clip, and adding an aerator to the kitchen faucet.

And, I’m learning things from both Dan and Peggy about taking care of my own ‘home’.

There are lots more projects on the docket, including painting the whole interior of the trailer (yes, cabinets, too), adding new window treatments, flooring, and so much more!

11. Renovating is More Affordable

With fun projects comes spending money. But, renovating a tiny kitchen in a travel trailer will not be nearly as expensive (or time-consuming) as renovating a kitchen in a full size home.

Would you ever use roller-blinds throughout your home? Well, in travel trailers, it’s the trend! And on-budget, too! šŸ˜€

12. Living in a Stationary Travel Trailer Gives You Room for Outside Storage

The ‘underbelly’ of a travel trailer is HUGE, and makes for a great place to store bins!

Dan and Peg have several outside sheds that they use for wardrobes, art supplies, and even a coffee station!

If I traveled full-time in a trailer, I wouldn’t have this luxury!

13. Remote Work is Easy

Though I’ve decided to take a short break from looking for a job, living full-time in a stationary trailer affords me the ability to still work remotely.

womans hand on laptop on wooden bench outside with cup of coffee

So, whether I decide to blog full-time (here’s praying), or find a different work-from-home position, I’ll already be set-up with a work space and Wifi! Easy peasy!

14. Easily Invite Guests

Living in a stationary travel trailer as a senior adult easily allows me to have a slumber party with my grandkids!

With a full size bed of my own, a sofa that turns into a bed, as well as a dinette that converts to a toddler size bed, having three of the grands over at one time just might be pretty easy.

Wait… who am I kidding? šŸ˜‰

There’s definitely room to have a couple friends over to have movie night! šŸ˜‰

15. Helps Stretch the Retirement Funds

Now, only the Lord knows where I will be in 5 years. BUT, if I’m still a senior adult living in a stationary travel trailer, my retirement funds will go MUCH further! Am I right?

16. Takes Me Out of My Comfort Zone

Throughout my adult life, the Lord has placed me in many situations that have made me ‘uncomfortable’:

  • Became a single-again-mom of two when I was thirty
  • Started sharing homes with family members until I was 51 years old
  • Took care of my dad in hospice until he passed away when I was 49
  • Moved into my first tiny home at 51 years old
  • Became my mom’s primary caregiver at 57 years old, until she passed away recently
  • Now living in a 200 square foot travel trailer at 59 years old

I don’t share this to solicit tears from the MWA family members, but it is to say that, through all these uncomfortable times in my life, the Lord has always remained faithful. And, He has taught me to wait on and rest in Him. In all of these situations, I have seen so much good.

senior adult stationary travel trailer living cross on a hill with the multicolored sky in background

And, I’m thankful, once again, to be in a situation where I can see God’s love and provision for me. All this, and Jesus, too!

17. Full-time Blogging, How You Can Help

If you’ve been around MWA for any time, you know that my desire for a number of years has been to blog full-time. It seems that the opportunity is on the horizon, and then the Lord decides that something else needs to fill that ’empty’ time.

Well, I’m hoping that with this time off from looking for another PT or FT job, I might be able to blog more consistently, and see if I can actually do the full-time blogging gig. šŸ™‚

And YOU can actually help me! Wanna know how?

Ways to Monetize a Blog

Not everyone knows how bloggers make a living from ‘just’ blogging. Here are just a few ways, and how you can be part of helping me reach my ‘dream’:

  • The largest monetizing tool that My Wee Abode uses is MediaVine. MediaVine is an ad network that gives bloggers the ability to ‘sell’ ad space to businesses. Every time you or someone else visits my blog, I receive a small payment from the businesses using my ad space. So, visiting my blog, and telling your friends about my blog, is the easiest way for you to help!
  • Feel free to use affiliate links. When you click on a product link inside one of my blog posts (i.e., Amazon product links for my DIY velvet pumpkins ), and make a purchase, Amazon will give me a small percentage of anything you purchase during that browsing session… for 24 hours! And it doesn’t cost you anything extra!
  • Follow me on Facebook , Instagram , and Pinterest . When brands like Home Depot, Lowe’s, or Target see that I have a strong following on my social media accounts, they are more likely to do business with me, and give me discount codes for you!
  • And, finally, subscribe to My Wee Abode. You’ll get instant notification of new posts, new printables, and new happenings at MWA, PLUS you never have to worry about losing contact with My Wee Abode if you subscribe. I will NEVER lose my email list to a social media monopoly. šŸ™‚

all the freebies!

Become a vip.

Of course, you are not obligated to do any of the above, but I do often get asked about how I receive income from blogging so, I thought I would make mention here. šŸ˜‰

I don’t think that I could downsize as far as you have, but I did downsize 11 years ago nearly after my husband passed away from a 2260 square foot farmhouse to an approximately 1000 square foot townhome, so I can sympathize and understand what the paring down process is like in reality. And, also, the absolute FUN that it is making your new place a true HOME representative of yourself alone and not as you being part of a couple. I LOVE my townhome and I HOPE you WILL come to LOVE your little home just as much. You are SO RIGHT that God takes care of us and gives us JUST WHAT WE NEED when we need it. May He BLESS you and your new home richly.

That is DEFINITELY a downsize, Evelyn. Living in 1000 square feet is still tiny in my opinion! I think I really was made for tiny living… I already really love it!

I really hope you will love your new home, as much as I do mine; I think that there is a bit of a challenge in the “living big, but in a smaller space” which some of us truly ENJOY. I know that honestly I’ve had a “blast” fixing my townhome up, and it’s evolved ever so much from what it was when I first moved here. I think our homes–no matter what the size–should truly be a representation of ourselves and the things we enjoy and love most, and that takes time to achieve; they evolve as we, ourselves do.

Iā€™m so excited to follow your latest journey! I know you will have so much fun redoing your wee abode and finding ways to do it inexpensively! #18 on your list should be ā€˜being able to actually live lifeā€™ā€¦..SOOO MUCH LESS STRESS! Youā€™ll have so much more time to do what you want even if itā€™s nothing but hanging out with your wonderful, supportive friends and neighbors! And what a blessing to have someone close by because ā€œyou never knowā€. Although we donā€™t live in ours full time, we are on our 3rd RV..a fifth wheel this timeā€¦and I have painted walls and cabinets, used removable wallpaper, changed out window treatments and light fixtures and furnishingsā€¦youā€™ll have a ball! There are so many blogs about living in and remodeling rvs for helpful hints and inspiration! Enjoy this phase of your lifeā€¦Iā€™ll be following!

Thanks, Susan! What did you use for your window treatments? I would have loved a 5th wheel… but they proved to be just a bit too large for my situation. Thanks for following along… love your comments, too!

I ordered those honeycomb cell fabric blinds (I think thatā€™s what theyā€™re called šŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļø) on-line and made new valances..also made curtains in bedroom and hung over the blinds for more privacyā€¦in our first trailer the people we bought it from had put up cute little curtains and I just left thoseā€¦we didnā€™t have that one long. Oh, I also put up peel and stick tile backsplashes. When you paint, and I painted all the walls and trim white, it will brighten it up in there so much and make it seem bigger. In this fifth wheel there were nice privacy shades so I left them and just recovered the cornices. I know youā€™ll figure out the best and most affordable for youā€¦.it took me awhile šŸ˜‰

Ah, yes, I know which ones you are talking about. I’m hoping to get the roller shades that are ‘free stop’… they start and stop where you want without having to ‘snap’ them. I’m hoping the mounting brackets will work in the tiny wall area between the cabinets and the windows!

I hope they do too! Itā€™s always a challenge!

Hi Julie, I read every sentence of this post and plan to share on The Weekend Edit this summer. I love this idea and your post answered all the questions running in my head! I think a work from home part time gig would be a fun balance between blog and connecting with others (even in remote work). Great post! laura

Yes… still thinking about that! Might even want to do a more ‘fluffy’ job, that would simply pay for insurance… who knows! Thanks for adding the post to your list for the summer!

Julie, How exciting for you. We have a motor home so I know how it can be, although we don’t live in it full time. You will have fun making it your own. God does have plans for us, we just have to let him guide us. Take care my friend, Bev

Thanks, Beverly! It’s a crazy time, but I’m looking forward to all the ups and downs, and learning to trust the Lord more!

Good for you Julie! You are remarkable! Go with God all the way!

Thanks, Laura… I’m looking forward to it, and thankful that Lord is with me always! šŸ˜‰

I love this!! Looking forward to keeping up with tips, tidbits, upside and downside of your experiences of living in the recreation vehicle. I admire your justification for doing so and how lucky you are for a place to be stationary, sometimes that is the hard hurdle to find without all the fees and rules. I am constantly downsizing and have, as a senior thought of van life for the adventure and experience.

Yes… If I had to park in a trailer park, I would have needed to rethink my options, for sure! Wow… living in a van would be ANOTHER tiny option!

Hey Julie, I’m so excited for you on your next chapter. You’re going to make your new home so comfy and cozy looking, and updating it will be fun. I can’t wait to follow along.

Thanks, Toni! So much to do… I’m really excited, but my head is spinning a bit!

So happy for you! I know you will be very happy with your new home. God bless.

Thank you, Ally! I’m really looking forward to making it my own (and bring glory to God), as well! God is good, all the time!

You certainly know how to downsize, Julie. We sold our house a couple of years ago and moved into an apartment…and we’re still trying to decide what’s next. Wishing you all the best with this exciting adventure!

Julie, you always amaze me with your optimism and positive attitude on life, and your reliance on God and His leading. I’m excited to see what you are doing with your new home, organizational ideas, and future plans. I’ll be here cheering you on!

Julie, my hat is off to you. Youā€™ve taken a big step into a small space. I wish you all the best. We downsized 12 years ago from 4680 square feet 5/4.5/3 living areas to 3260 square feet 3/2.5 ) I love our new home and it did feel good to get rid of a lot of things at the time. I donā€™t think we have enough space since Sweet Shark moved his office home in August. He uses one of the guest rooms and now I donā€™t have my sewing space. I guess Iā€™m spoiled since you can get so much home in Dallas for less than other parts of the country like California. Anyway, it makes me appreciate how much we have.

Julie, WOW!! Such an informative and entertaining post…YOU GO ,GIRL!!! Kudos to you for taking this interesting challenge on and it looks like it is going to be so much fun!!! Over the past few years, I did try to get Joe to move from our 1750 sq. ft. townhouse to a 2 bedroom, 1 1/2 bath 1050 sq. ft. apartment as I did not want to put on a second new roof!!! Joe did not want to move and I have decided that I will stay in our townhouse for now as I own the house and my car….Right now, it is cheaper for me to stay here…The steps both outside and inside will be the reason if I decide to sell and move…But as long as I can physically do the steps, I will be staying here..I do have to admit that it is adventurous to think that I now solely own my home and can do what I want to it even though I pretty much did so when Joe was alive… I have made our bedroom into my bedroom already and I will be purging things that I do not need like a lot of tools, car care things ( I made an appointment to have my car detailed) and garden tools….I donated all of Joe’s clothes to a soup kitchen that has a clothing room for the homeless and also donated clothing to their veteran’s home. Now I have a lot of closet room so I am also thinking of new storage and organizing ideas…I am looking forward to following you along on this exciting Journey!!! Thanks so much for sharing!!! Hugs, Deb Debbie-Dabble Blog

  • The current 5-year program (CDC-RFA-DP-23-0013) runs from 2023 to 2028.

HOP supports policy, systems, and environmental changes to address health disparities related to nutrition, physical activity, and obesity.

HOP works in counties where 40% or more of adults have obesity. Obesity in the United States affects 4 in 10 adults and 2 in 10 children. Obesity accounts for about $173 billion in health care costs every year.

The program's goal is to make healthy eating and active living more accessible and affordable. The universities work with state investments and resources. Partners represent many professions, such as agriculture, transportation, education, health care, parks and recreation, business, housing, and defense and military.

The universities work with community extension services on evidence-based strategies for:

  • Food and nutrition security through food service and nutrition guidelines and fruit and vegetable vouchers and produce prescriptions.
  • Increasing physical activity through community design .
  • Family healthy weight programs .

Employee Safety Programs and Training

Our employee safety programs and training focus on providing the policies, procedures and education that are essential to keep our people and customers safe.

We empower our employees to slow down or stop any operation if they feel it is necessary to do so to maintain a safe work environment for our personnel and a safe travel experience for our customers. We operate several cross-divisional and division-specific employee safety programs that help us to achieve our safety objectives. These programs are critical to preventing serious injuries, incidents or accidents by proactively encouraging safety dialogue across the company. Leaders are continually promoting the use of Safety Time Outs, which are employee-initiated pauses to address a safety concern, as essential to safe operations.

In 2023, we conducted our second annual Safety & Environment Summit, where more than 400 operational leaders gathered with members of Deltaā€™s leadership team and safety and environmental subject-matter experts. This two-day event provides an opportunity to align on safety and environmental policies, procedures and training, and to extend them out to all aspects of Deltaā€™s operations.

Delta provides a suite of safety training that includes compliance requirements as well as tailored information relevant to an employeeā€™s role. We also communicate the importance of safety through weekly videos, internal posts, town halls and daily interactions with leaders and within workspaces to supplement training and embed a culture of safety. The expectations of Safety Leadership that we set for Delta employees also extend to our contractors, vendors and business partners.

Protecting our Customers and Employees

It is critical for Delta and the broader airline industry to use all the tools available to mitigate in-flight misconduct and maintain safe flight experiences for our customers and employees. We provide de-escalation and self-defense training for flight attendants and other frontline employees and continue to partner with law enforcement to increase security at dozens of airports to protect our passengers and employees. We will continue collaborating on industry-wide solutions, including maintaining a no-fly list, and cooperating with local, state and federal authorities on the prosecution of disruptive passengers.

So, are you ready to reimagine the future?

usc social work

Social workers make a real difference, driving change at a policy level, within an organization, or by working with individuals one-on-one.

USCā€™s Master of Social Work will empower you to pursue bold, compassionate solutions to complex social challenges. Our program will prepare you to enter the workforce and immediately engage with the issues that matter most to you.

Our MSW Program

For decades, as a faculty, we have delivered bold, principled, and forward-thinking training to social workers. We will build upon our history and our identity to advance our field. We are innovators and change-makers. Our MSW is designed to empower USC Suzanne Dworak-Peck graduates to see and understand their clients through an integrative, nuanced, and dynamic lens. Culturally-responsive and evidence-informed practice has always been the core focus.

Our Integrative Social Work specialization is created for people like you who cannot wait to change the world. Our MSW provides an Advanced Generalist education with a specialization in Integrative Social Work practice. Integrative Social Work is the intentional use of a person in environment perspective that offers a comprehensive understanding of a client across all practice domains to implement the most effective intervention. It brings historical, cultural, and political perspectives and a critical understanding of difference and oppression to bear in understanding the person and environment, social problems, interventions, and possibilities for social justice-oriented action.

MSW coursework's designed to be accessible and customizable to meet students with varied interests and needs. Students may take courses full-time or part-time, fully in-person on campus in LA or completely online. Hybrid options (first year in person in LA or San Diego) and second-year online also are available.

Foundational courses in assessment and clinical practice, theory, research, social policy, self-care and wellness, professional values, and ethics in complex decision-making. Specialized courses can be customized along tracks such as courses focused on military, adult health and wellness, children, youth and families, and schools and military. Students may also choose not to identify a track and take courses across tracks. Hands-on practicum education allows students to apply skills learned in class. Students may also choose to enhance their degree with additional specialized education with University certificates.  Certificates are offered within the School of Social Work and across programs at the University.

This intensive program includes 1,200 hours of hands-on practicum education to practice and apply the skills you learn in class. After you complete this program, you will be prepared to find meaningful work that makes a difference.

Our Curriculum

Licensure and Credentialing

The Master of Social Work (MSW) program at USC is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE), and designed to help meet the eligibility requirements for the California Board of Behavioral Sciences (BBS) and Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) examination to obtain licensure. The MSW program provides a pathway to licensure, but does not satisfy all requirements for licensure upon completion of the program.

Requirements for licensure, including levels of licensure, vary by state and students should review the USC Licensure and Certifications site for state-specific MSW course requirements and restrictions. Students interested in pursuing licensure should also contact the licensing board for the state in which they hope to become licensed to determine specific requirements for licensure, including any requirements that are beyond the scope of the MSW program.

Yes. Graduate student housing is offered to graduate students in LA at the University Park Campus.
