What travelers are saying
Serbia Wine Tour
All year round.
In Vino Veritas ( eng. “ In wine there is truth ” ) as Romans would say. Many wise sayings are said about wine, love and loving wine. Every wisdom about it was gladly accepted among Serbian winemakers. By listening to those sayings, our winemakers have made some of the world`s finest wines. They have come up to the secret ingredient. Would You like to know the secret? Well, it is so simple: they are not making wine just out of grapes. They are putting much more love in it… So, let us take You to the adventure on which even Dionysius and Bacchus would envy You. Every region in Serbia has a history and tradition for itself, quite independently one from another. Therefore, even their wines pretty much differ between themselves, one thing is common for all – rich history. Let us try to present You Serbian spirit through Serbian wines…

Our first quest will take us to the banks of Danube River, far on the east, on sunny hills of Negotin region . Their tradition of wine making comes from the time of Roman Empire, for the most trustworthy winemakers were from these lands. Of course, tasting wine could be a very difficult and exhausting job, so our people came up to the great idea – serving traditional Serbian snack, called “mezzah” with wine.
We will continue our journey towards south, directly to the most famous medieval cellars in town of Aleksandrovac . These vineyards supplied Byzantine, and afterwards Serbian Royal court. A special vine sort grows here – Prokupac . Aleksandrovac wines were so appreciated and known for its strength and taste, that they were crucial part of Serbian heroic epics – whenever a hero has to go into the battle, he would refresh his strength and courage with the finest red wine from this area.
As we go back to the Central Serbia, in Šumadija region , famous for its rebellious spirit, we will find out why that spirit remained until nowadays. There is a special area in Šumadija, which carries a title of the best enological area in the world. As soon as we enter in, You will see why is that – beautiful, sunny hills, plenty of water and enough three shades were look like made especially for wine growing. Sumadija wines are world famous for the most sophisticated wine lovers, for no man could resist beautiful taste of Muscat and Riesling . About its quality, we will just give You a hint: King Petar I Karadjordjević once ordered local peasants: “Do not make war, but wine!”.
We are already crossing Sava and Danube Rivers and entering Vojvodina region . Our journey is getting close to the end. Therefore, as a feast without a desert is only eating, we have kept the sweetest thing for the culmination of our quest. Vojvodina belonged to the Austrian Empire until 1918. Many documents confirm our claim – the best wines drunk on special occasions came from Panonian valley. Every family has its own secret recipe, which only the eldest son inherits. It is a secret of Bermet , a special wine served only instead of desert. No its not a typing error – bermet is so sweet that any cake or other specialty would only disturb the delicate taste this wine leaves behind itself.
During centuries, people in these lands lived with vine and dedicated their lives in satisfying their hedonistic needs. As we said, it is not grape that makes the perfect wine, it is LOVE .

Fruska Gora (Fruška gora in Serbian Latin alphabet) is the sole mountain in Serbia’s north region of Vojvodina . As such it’s been an ideal area for wine growing and viticulture for centuries. Actually, this is the very first area in nowadays Serbia where Romans planted first vines, back in the III century AD. Thanks to Romans and their passion for the divine liquor, improved by modern Serbian winemakers you have a chance to enjoy this Fruska Gora wine tour . Another wine tour option you might consider is the Royal Footprints Wine Tour .
What to Expect on the Fruska Gora Wine Tour in 2024
First of all, expect a fun day exploring Serbian wines. The tour is easygoing, you won’t spend too much time on wheels, since Fruska Gora is only an hour drive from Belgrade and 30 minutes from Novi Sad. But not only that, you’ll have a chance to meet a whole bunch of interesting people who give a personal touch to their wines. You’ll learn about a team of young and educated people who started their wine making venture here on the slopes of Fruska Gora . You’ll experience true local hospitality at a family owned wine cellar, where the winemaker is also a chef. You’ll visit a posh winery which aims high in both local and international markets. And at the end you’ll meet a very alternative approach to wine making. If you like bands Nirvana and the Oasis , you’ll like this winery too. Of course, you’ll taste plenty of Serbian wines along the way.
#YourSerbiaHost will pick you up at your Belgrade (optionally Novi Sad) address (usual pick up time is 10am) and you’ll head together to the northwest of the country. While you enjoy your new local friend’s company and by the time you receive essential information about the Fruska Gora wine tour, you’ll reach the first stop on the itinerary. The first winery is Imperator Winery and they are specialized in biodynamic wines . What on earth are biodynamic wines, you probably ask yourself at this point. If you are familiar with organic wines, biodynamic ones are the next level. Here you’ll learn the story (hopefully firsthand) how this enthusiastic people got the idea of grown biodynamic wines and how that works.
From here we’ll take you through the heart of Fruska Gora National Park (oh yes, it’s a national park as well) and bring you to another hidden gem of wine making and gastronomic scene of this region. The second wine stop is Miljević Wine cellar , located in a typical village of the area. Here you won’t try just their wines, you’ll also have a chance to taste their first class rakija made from different fruits. The winemaker is also a “rakija maker”, a cook and a great host. This is the place where you’ll experience local food over lunch combined with wine tasting. A complete local hospitality experience.
Next stop is a flamboyant Deurić Winery , which is an ambitious enterprise with state of the art cellars, technology and of course wines. The kind hostess will take you on a tour through the cellar and give you essential insights about their winery. Once the theory is over, you are ready for the practical part. You can choose between three or six labels to taste. Pay attention to their labels which are produced from grape varieties typical for the wine region of Fruska Gora.
As a final stop before you wrap up the Fruska Gora wine tour is a young and by any standards different winery Komuna . Here you’ll take a short tour through their cellar, learn about their approach to wine making and then you can taste up to seven of their wines. The ambience of the winery is something different. You’ll get the idea why it’s named Komuna (Commune).
After the itinerary of the Fruska Gora wine tour is complete, you’ll return to Belgrade (or Novi Sad) and we will drop-you off to your address. The drive from Komuna both to Belgrade and Novi Sad is around 45 minutes.

- Great Wine Tour in Serbia
Big Wine Tour in Serbia
- Župa Aleksandrovačka
Region of Župa, that is compared by wine connoisseurs with French Bordeaux because of similar climate conditions, represents one of most famous wine-growing regions of Serbia. So-called „Serbian Champagne“ has been for centuries producing wines consumed by Celts, Romans, Byzantines, medieval Serbia rulers, Turks… On slopes of Kopaonik and Jastrebac mountains in the valley of Western Morava in perfect climate conditions authentic sorts of grape are grown: Tamnjanka (Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains) (more than 500 years) and Prokupac (more than 1000 years) that are the oldest grape sorts in Serbia. We will also visit „poljana“ – authentic short-time camps for wine-makers with picturesque streets and wine cellars and one of the most representative wineries of Župa, winery „Budimir“. For September tours it is possible to visit „Župa wine harvesting“ – traditional event that glorifies wine and grape.
Šumadija Region
After a lunch pause we’ll drive to central Serbia to Šumadija region to one of the newest wineries „Temet“ near Jagodina. Located on beautiful slopes that create perfect sun illumination, Temet will satisfy taste of real connoisseurs of wine. We will try wines made of sorts Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Syrah, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, with local food delicacies. Then the bus travels to Kragujevac where the first day of our program will be over.
After breakfast we will go to Oplecan subregion in the hilly part of Šumadija that resembles Italian region of Tuscany. Since the Middle Age and period of Despot Stefan Lazarević this region was famous for good wine. We’ll visit winery „Aleksandrović“ and try indigene sorts Prokupac and Vranac. In the second half of the day we’ll see „Despotika“ winery located near Smederevska Palanka, and have an organized lunch there with wine-testing. Driving to Belgrade and a night-over in a hotel.
Fruška Gora
We’ll travel to the north to Fruška Gora. This region is one of the oldest in Europe with wine-making history of 1700 years. Vicinity of Danube and light reflexion create exceptional micro climate that augments quantity of sugar in grape, mild precipitation in the mount located in the heart of Vojvodina valley and moderate continental climate differ this region from others. Nowadays Fruška Gora with its 17 functioning monasteries is famous as Serbian Athos Mount. On the half of vineyards the dominating sort of grape is Italian „Riesling“ which is said to be indigenous sort as well as bermet, wine served at Titanic. More than 60 wineries are located under the sun of this region, and we’ll visit „Deurić“ or „Kovačević“. Excursion on the winery, wine houses and organized lunch with traditional Srem delicacies. Sremski Karlovci is located in the bottom of Fruška Gora and presents a real gem of Serbian culture and spirituality. The town is famous for wine production and annual festival “Wineball”. Drive to Novi Sad.
We go on to extreme north of Serbia to Palić region. Prehistoric Pannonian sea that had been covering this surface left after it hectares of sandy soil, this is why wines produced here are called „sand wines“. Wine growing tradition here is more than 2000 years old, sandy terrain and mild climate create conditions for growing Italian Riesling, Pino blanc, Hungarian Ezerjo, Merlot, Cabenet Franc, Pinot noir, Cabernet. Visit to one of the most famous region’s wineries „Zvonko Bogdan“ and a lunch in authentic Vojvodina restaurant.

By using state-of-the-art technology, following the world trends, scientific knowledge and tradition of generations, the Aleksandrovic Winery has become a leader among the winemakers of the entire Balkan region and has won a number of medals for quality at the world’s largest competitions.
On wine tour after visiting these two wineries our next stop is Oplenac, the royal complex of Karadjordjevic dynasty. One of the important parts is Royal winery which we will visit on this wine tour.
Complex of the winery was started by King Peter I Karađorđević, and after his death he was succeeded by King Aleksandar I Karađorđević. During the First World War, the graves were desecrated, but it has been successfully restored and today presents a cultural monument of exceptional significance. The jewel of the winery is a cellar which at that time it was the most modern basement, with modern equipment, built like French wine cellars. Even today it is very well preserved, so visitors have the opportunity to see how the king produced wine some 85 years ago. In the museum space on whose walls are the photographs depicting King Alexander I and Queen Mary in vintage, three bureaucas can be seen – a gift of burial for the wedding day of the royal couple from the Serbs, Croats and Slovenes. On each of them are the initial verses of the anthems of every nation: the Serbian “God of Justice”, the Croatian “Our Beautiful” and the Slovenian “Next, Flag of Glory”. Barrels were made in each of these republics of dry Slavonian oak. The oldest boiler in the basement is from 1909.

After tasting and sightseeing, continue the route to Topola and Oplenac. Our next stop is Oplenac and Aleksandrovic Winery. Aleksandrovic’s family has been involved in viticulture and wine making for over a hundred years and has been closely cooperating with winemakers of royal cellars from the beginning, and was also among the founders of the Venetian Viticulture Cooperative.

We will have the opportunity to try some of the most famous species such as: Variant, Oplen Riesling, Trijumf Rose.
St. George’s church
We continue our journey to the Royal Poses, the Church of Sv. George and the Royal Winery. The church actually represents the dynastic grave of Karađorđević, and was built on the model of numerous ruling mausoleums in Europe.
Royal winery
We complete the tour with a visit to the Royal Winery. It was built in 1931 by King Aleksandar I Karadjordjevic, in a place where there was a small basement in which until the beginning of the Great War, grapes were processed.
