Datum: 22 maj Tid: 12.00 Pris: 95:-/person

I goda vänners lag

Datum: 1 juni Tid: 10.00-16.30 Plats: Dalarnas museum Pris: Se Carl Larsson-gården

Dalarna – a miniature Sweden rich in nature and culture

Dalarna is a natural treasure featuring varied and vast landscapes offering all manner of outdoor activities – with fascinating history and cultural heritage to boot.

  • The long-distance cross-country ski race 'Vasaloppet' is the oldest of its kind in the world. It runs from Sälen to Mora.
  • 'Falu Rödfärg' – the rusty red-coloured paint giving many Swedish houses their distinctive character – contains pigment from Falun Mine.
  • Dalarna is home to Sweden’s southernmost Sámi village, Idre sameby.

Dalarna County, nestled in middle Sweden, leaves little to be desired. It's filled with natural beauty in the shape of hiking-friendly forests, mighty lakes, mountains and flower meadows – which the winters transform into terrain great for skiing and skating. With its all-encompassing landscapes, it’s easy to see why Dalarna has been described as a “miniature Sweden”.

Culturally speaking, two of Sweden’s most iconic symbols hail from Dalarna: the elaborately decorated ‘dalahäst’ (Dala Horse) and the unmistakably Swedish shade of ‘ Falu Rödfärg ’ (Falun Red) that adorns cottages across the country.

Dalarna is also the place to visit if you want to experience a Midsummer celebration with all the trimmings. Come June, join Swedes from across the country and head to Tällberg, Rättvik or Leksand – idyllic spots known for their wonderfully authentic Midsummer festivities (Midsummer Eve is always on a Friday between 19 and 25 June).

Falun – a UNESCO-listed historic gem

One of Dalarna’s claims to fame is its centuries-old UNESCO-listed Falun Mine , which saw the city of Falun grow into something of a superpower in the 17th century. Learn about this landmark’s history and other fascinating stories – such as that of Fet-Mats (“Fat Mats”), a naturally mummified miner found in 1719, perfectly intact 42 years after vanishing – on a guided tour down the mine. The site is located a pleasant walk from the city centre via Elsborg, a historic residential area dotted with wooden houses. The houses served as miner’s cottages, painted in Falu Rödfärg, made with pigment from the mine.

The legendary King Gustav Vasa is strongly associated with Falun. The Battle of Falun in February 1521 was the first scene of combat in the Swedish War of Liberation, and Vasa allegedly had to escape through a pit latrine to avoid capture by the Danes.

The must-visit artist houses of Dalarna

Dalarna offers art-lovers a wealth of experiences. Carl and Karin Larsson are among Sweden’s most iconic artists, and their unique aesthetic has inspired generations. The pair’s family home, Carl Larsson-gården , is a much-loved world of art, interior design and Swedish cultural heritage. In addition to Carl Larsson’s famous paintings, you’ll discover wonderfully bold textiles and wooden rustic furniture designed by Karin. Take a guided tour and have a bite at Restaurant Hyttstugan , a short walk away, serving up fika and dishes made from local produce.

Anders Zorn, born in 1860, is another significant artist hailing from Dalarna. The Zorn Museum in Mora boasts the world’s largest collection of his work, including his famous portraits and watercolour scenes depicting rustic life in Dalarna. You can also pay a visit to his nearby home, Zorngården (The Zorn House), which has been historically preserved.

Discover Dalarna’s folk art and famous Dala Horses

Kurbits is a folk art form with strong ties to Dalarna. The ornate, often floral-based, painting style was popularly applied to wooden furniture in the 18th and 19th centuries. It also adorns the hand-carved Swedish classic dalahäst – (Dala Horse). Nils Olsson Hemslöjd workshop in the village of Nusnäs has been in business since the 1920s and is celebrated as one of the original purveyors of these covetable folk art pieces. Observe artisans at work during a tour, or even paint your own horse.

Avesta is home to the largest Dala Horse in the world. Towering 13 metres, it’s hard to miss as you enter the region’s southern parts.

Adventure Mine, Dalarna

Dalarna's wide span of outdoor activities

The nature of Dalarna is epic, with endless forests studded with majestic waterfalls and lakes – the crowning glory being Lake Siljan, the seventh largest in Sweden. It’s an ideal spot for swimming, fishing and kayaking. Siljansleden is a popular trail snaking around the entirety of the lake, perfect for hiking and, in some parts, mountain biking.

Also, consider the Dalkarlsvägen network of trails. This historic migration route takes you all the way from Dalarna to Stockholm. The route is divided into stretches, each one running between 20 and 37 kilometres, with plenty of natural beauty and cultural sites to take in along the way.

With its 30 metre-high rock walls, Helvetesfallet is a must-see natural wonder. You’ll find this extraordinary canyon on the river Ämån. And don’t miss the spectacularly beautiful Fulufjället National Park – a mountainous area near the Norwegian border.

Whether you’re into cross-country skiing, alpine skiing or snowboarding, Dalarna is a snow sport enthusiast’s paradise. Idre and Sälen are two excellent ski resorts with a range of activities for the whole family.

For a nature experience out of the ordinary, visit the Adventure Mine's sauna in Idkerberget, southwest of Falun. Located 80 metres below ground, this unusual place offers both adventure and relaxation thanks to the mine sauna ritual, which includes a guided tour through dark tunnels and bathing possibilities in the crystal-clear water surrounding the illuminated sauna.

The authentic flavours of Dalarna

Dalarna’s culinary heritage has had an impact on Sweden as a whole. The much-loved classic, ‘falukorv’ (Falu sausage) is a giant U-shaped sausage, made from a grated mixture of smoked pork and beef and mild spices, enjoyed countrywide. With roots in the copper-mining community, it is made according to strict regulations.

The Borlänge ostrich farm Sahlins Struts has an onsite restaurant serving up ostrich burgers and more. And locally produced cheese is the order of the day at Murboannas deli in the same city.

Take the opportunity to immerse yourself in Dalarna’s Sami culture at Idre-based Renbiten – a family-run shop and café offering traditional, homemade Sami dishes such as reindeer soup.

Fryksås Hotel , housed within a historic homestead in Orsa, is a fine dining option with a menu based on locally sourced, seasonal produce – spanning delicious meat, fish and greens.

For more restaurants around the county, search Visit Dalarna's website .

Dalarna, often referred to as the heart of Sweden, is a mesmerising region imbued with rich history and culture. The name ‘Dalarna’ translates to ‘the valleys’, encapsulating the region’s scenic beauty of rolling hills, sparkling lakes and lush forests.

The region carries a fascinating historical significance that resonates through its heritage sites, such as the Dalarna Museum. Once an epicentre for copper mining during the 17th century, Falun in Dalarna was a bustling hub contributing significantly to Sweden’s economy. The remnants of this era can still be seen in Stora Kopparberg – also known as the Great Copper Mountain.

Kulturresan – Visit Dalarna

Culture Route Dalarna, även kallad Kulturresan i Dalarna.

A sizeable province, DALARNA takes in not only the area around Lake Siljan but also the ski resorts of Sälen and Idre , close to the Norwegian border. The area holds a special misty-eyed place in the Swedish psyche and should certainly be seen, although not to the exclusion of places further north. Tiny countryside villages and rolling meadows sweet with the smell of summer flowers make up most of Dalarna, a rural idyll given a handsome backdrop by the land to the northwest of Lake Siljan, which rises slowly to meet the chain of mountains that forms the border with Norway. One small lakeside town can look pretty much like another, so if time is short, restrict yourself to visiting just one or two: Leksand and Mora are the best options, and the latter is also the starting point for Sweden’s most beautiful train journey, along the Inlandsbanan to the Arctic Circle.

Around Lake Siljan

The dala horse, the inlandsbanan, inlandsbanan practicalities, musik vid siljan, midsummer kyrkbåtar races, sweden’s red houses.

North of Mora, the province becomes more mountainous and less populous, the only place of note here being Orsa , with its fascinating bear park . There’s no need to worry about accommodation in the province: you’ll find numerous hotels, hostels and campsites around.

Things have changed since Baedeker, writing in 1889, observed that “Lake Siljan owes much of its interest to the inhabitants of its banks, who have preserved many of their primitive characteristics. In their idea of cleanliness they are somewhat behind the age.” Today it’s not the people who draw your attention but the setting. Lake Siljan , created millions of years ago when a meteorite crashed into the earth, is what many people come to Sweden for, its gently rolling surroundings, traditions and local handicrafts weaving a subtle spell on the visitor. There’s a lush feel to much of the region, the charm of the forest heightened by its proximity to the lake, all of which adds a pleasing dimension to the low-profile towns and villages that interrupt the rural scenery. Only Mora stands out as being bigger and busier, with the hustle and bustle of holiday-makers and countless caravans crowding the place in summer.

Perhaps the most traditional of the Dalarna villages is LEKSAND , about 50km northwest of Falun. There's little to do here other than take it easy, but it's certainly worth making the effort to reach at midsummer , when it stages festivals recalling age-old dances performed around the maypole (Sweden’s maypoles are erected in June – in May the trees here are still bare and the ground can be covered with snow), and featuring kyrkbåtar boat races.

Mora and around

At the northwestern corner of the lake, 60km from Leksand, MORA is the best place to head for hereabouts. An appealing, laidback town, its main draws are two excellent museums, one dedicated to the painter Anders Zorn, and the other to the Vasaloppet ski race. It's also handy for onward trains on the Inlandsbanan and for moving on to the ski resorts of Idre and Sälen.

No matter where you travel in Sweden, you’ll come across small wooden figurines known as Dala horses ( dalahästar ). Their bright red colour, stumpy legs and garish floral decorations are, for many foreigners, high kitsch and rather ugly; the Swedes, however, adore bright colours (the redder the better) and love the little horses – it’s virtually an unwritten rule that every household in the country should have a couple on display. Two brothers from the town of Nusnäs , Nils and Jannes Olsson , began carving the horses in the family baking shed in 1928, when they were just teenagers. Though they were simply interested in selling their work to help their cash-strapped parents make ends meet, somehow the wooden horses started catching on – Swedes are at a loss to explain why – and soon they were appearing across the country as a symbol of rural life.

Stretching over 1000km from Mora to Gällivare, north of the Arctic Circle, the privately operated Inlandsbanan , the Inland Railway, is a great way of travelling off the beaten track through central and northern Sweden; onboard guides provide commentaries and information about places along the route to ensure you get the most out of the journey. State-owned until 1992, it’s now run as a private venture, supported by the fifteen municipalities that the route passes through.

Trains run on the Inlandsbanan for a few months in the summer, generally between late June and late August, though the exact operating season varies year to year, so check the latest timetable at w inlandsbanan.se . To give an idea of prices, Mora–Östersund is 600kr, a seat reservation is an extra 50kr and a bike costs 100kr; InterRail cards are valid. Timetables are only approximate, and the train will stop whenever the driver feels like it – perhaps for a spot of wild-strawberry picking or to watch a beaver damming a stream. Generally there’s one daily train north from Mora at around 2.45pm, with a connecting train running from Gothenburg via Kristinehamn (the original starting point of the line) from July to mid-August. Done in one go, the journey from Mora to Gällivare lasts two days, with an overnight stop in Östersund. It’s a much better idea, though, to take it at a more relaxed pace, with a couple of stops along the route (you can break your journey as many times as you like on one ticket).

If you’re planning using the Inlandsbanan a lot, consider investing in the Inland Railway Card (Inlandsbanekort; 1995kr), which gives unlimited travel for two weeks.

Should you be around during the first week or so of July, don’t miss Musik vid Siljan , nine days of musical performances in lakeside churches, the stunning former limestone quarry, Dalhalla, and at various locations out in the surrounding forest. The range of music covered is exceptionally wide, including chamber music, jazz, traditional folk songs and dance-band music, with proceedings starting in the early morning and carrying on until late evening every day. Full details at w musikvidsiljan.se .

Dalarna’s midsummer celebrations are the most famous in Sweden, and culminate in the church boat (kyrkbåtar) races, a waterborne procession of sleek wooden longboats, which the locals once rowed to church on Sundays. The races start on Midsummer’s Day in Siljansnäs – take the roughly hourly bus #84 from Leksand – and continue for ten days at different locations around the lake; the races hit Leksand on the first Saturday in July. Leksand’s tourist office will have details of the arrangements for each summer’s races.

As you travel around Sweden, you can’t help but notice that virtually every timber structure is painted deep red. Many outsiders mistakenly see this lack of individuality and expression as stifling social democractic conformity. It is actually more a question of practicality combined with age-old tradition. In a climate as severe as Sweden’s, wood needs special protection from the elements: the red paint used for generations on structures across the country, produced in Falun, contains a natural copper preservative. Known as Falu rödfärg , this paint is Sweden’s aesthetically more pleasing answer to pebbledash.

Verket & Avesta Art - Museum and art gallery in Dalarna

Table of Contents

Verket is part of “Museum of Work”

The “Museum of work” is a project by ArbetSam that collects and lists all the museums that are dedicated to the history of peoples working places and kinds of work. Verket was the first steelworks to be built in Avesta. It’s located in Koppardalen, which translates into Copper Walley. It tells an interesting story and shows an important era that used to be in Avesta. You can see that this was a special place, even before you enter. The building looks great and you want to enter.

For people that are interested in these types of museums, there is an app that you can download, and that lists them all. Just go to your app-searching place and, type in Museiguide. Download the app and then you can search for all the museums. Today there are 485 museums that are part of the organization. It’s free of charge so that’s good.

Did you know that Falu Gruva in Dalarna is also part of the “Museum of Work”?

Verket – a part of Kulturresan in Dalarna

Kulturresan in Dalarna is a guide to nine different places in Dalarna that represent an important cultural- and, places that are really important in understanding the history of Dalarna. By visiting the different places that are included, you’ll get a unique insight into the history of Dalarna and Sweden. Here is the complete list of all the attractions that are part of Kulturresan:

  • Verket/Avesta Art
  • Carl Larsson-gården
  • Dalarnas Museum
  • Ornässtugan
  • Nils Olssons Dalahästar
  • Porfyrmuseet

Read more about Kulturresan in our post about Hildasholm where you’ll learn more about Kulturresan and Kulturpasset.

Verket – a brief history

Verket was built in 1874 and steel ingots were made here and for more than 60 years. This place was a huge workplace for the locals. In the middle of 1900, the process became outdated and Verket became abandoned. It stayed that way until 1986 when Avesta county bought it and started the restoration. This place is surprisingly complete and here you can learn more about how the steelwork used to be done and how the process was made.

Inside Verket in Avesta - a brief history

The top floor at Verket

When you enter the building, you automatically end up in the gift shop. However, after getting your ticket, your visit starts at the top of Verket, on the fourth floor. Here you will get to learn more about the building itself and see some great art in their exhibition. One thing that strikes me straight away is whether the bird-sounds are real or whether they are sound effects. You can hear them tiptoe on the roof and you hear them chirp. Mini confirms that they are real birds and no added sound effects.

Permanent exhibitions at Verket

While we were walking around inside the building, we met a local couple that said that they come here every year. They informed us that some of the exhibitions are permanent and some of them are unique for the summer. They said that they are always just as impressed as they were the year before. That when they think that the exhibitions can’t get any better – it does!

I know what they are talking about. I am so glad that we got to experience Verket and Avesta Art in 2020 because it was fantastic! So, from what we gathered, there are several permanent exhibitions that popped out more to us than others. Sure, all of them are great but we had our favorites that we would like to share with you!

Kjell Engman creates miracles at Verket

Probably our favorite place. We stayed here super long and could not get enough, admiring Kjell Engmans glasswork. He is such a good artist that he works with the famous glass brand “Costa Boda”. In Verket, he has a piece that is permanent and then he switches things around (according to the local couple that we met). Inside the room where he has his exhibition, it’s dark. At times it feels too dark and you just want to turn the lights up so that you can admire the art.

Kjell Engman creates miracles at Verket

“Korridoren” by Sonja Nilsson

This is such a fun installation! You open a door and end up in a corridor. You take a few steps and then you need to make a turn. The corridor continues and you take yet another few steps just to make another turn. And then it goes on and on. You just walk in a neverending corridor with turns and illusions.

"Korridoren" by Sonja Nilsson

Bjorn Lovins gallery

This installation can be found above the gift shop and it stands out because of a huge toy car that’s carved out in wood. I believe that some people miss this part of the exhibition because they might skip the gift shop. Skipping the gift shop would be a pitty, but more on that later.

Bjorn Lovins gallery

Opera Tactil – so much fun

Mini’s favorite part when visiting a museum or an art gallery is to find something that’s interactive. Inside Verket, there are several different exhibitions that are interactive and where you can touch and play and have fun with the art. Opera Tactil is such a thing and it was totally awesome! This is a place where you get to create your own opera. Mini had so much fun here – banging on oil drums, rims, aluminum things, and a lot of other things.

Opera Tactil - so much fun

Avesta Art 2020 Facts and Fantasies

This year (2020) the theme of Avesta Art is Facts and Fantasies. They have a new theme each year and we love that idea. This means that you can keep coming back and have something new to look at each year. Fact and Fantasies is a great theme and we can honestly say that it’s not easy to always figure out what parts of the exhibition was fact and what was fiction.

Avesta Art 2020 Facts and Fantasies

Folkhemmets design – How it used to be

On the top floor at Verket, there is an exhibition that shows stainless steel and aluminum utensils. It is a collection that belongs to Thomas Lindblad and Tove Torbjörn Lenskog. They have collected hundreds and hundreds of utensils and now they are nicely placed for the visitors to admire. We are born in the ’80s (Mini in 1979) and I could remember some of the coffee pots and saucepans that were on display.

Folkhemmets design - How it used to be

Torbjorn Grass – Somewhat different

A “Grassofon” that creates sounds and music for the visitor to take part in. Things made out of metal, electromagnets, and wooden boxes create a 10-minute show. Now, I have no knowledge about how sending electronic impulses works but it sounded pretty cool. And after we have created our own music at the Opera Tactil – this is a fun continuation on the theme.

Torbjorn Grass - Somewhat different

Anna Linnea Liljeholm – an interesting artist

It is well known that all human beings and animals are way into nesting. There’s something special when (mostly women), start preparing for their life. Birds collect sticks and branches and build their home. In the old ages, all the girls got a trousseau. Here, they were collecting and nesting for when they move out of their home and start a new family.

Anna Linnea Liljeholm - an interesting artist

Aquanauts – About the last expedition to Siljansringen

Ok, so this was one of our absolute favorites. Ok, so we had a lot of favorites but this one really stood out. This is an exhibition that tells the story about two female researchers and their last trip to Siljansringen. They are out, exploring the area where a meteor hit. It turns out that they find some odd creatures, looking somewhat like people but covered in mussels, bark, and oyster-like scales.

Aquanauts - About the last expedition to Siljansringen

Homo Aquatis had their own smell

Apparently, in the world around Siljansringen, there were five different spices, all so similar and yet so different and unique. The Testa Ostrea was a “human” that had oyster-scales around its body. Detractisque Corticubus, Concha Alba, Nigrum Folium and the Cochlea Brunneis – all had their unique look and smell. There are life-sized “replicas” of each and every one of the Homo Aquatis and there are even small boxes that allow you to smell them.

Aquanauts - About the last expedition to Siljansringen

Ylva Ceder creates magic with fire

People like Ylva Ceder make me so impressed with how creative people make art in different ways. Ylva is using a blowtorch while creating some amazing artwork. The paintings are a reminder of forest fires and I can’t wrap my head around the artistic work.

Ylva Ceder creates magic with fire

Markus Kahre – Easy to miss if you don’t look

We walked by this exhibition, just taking a quick look and wrote it off as a restroom. However, thanks to Ann (a magical fairy working inside Verket) we went back and had a second look. It’s a small room with lockers but there’s something more in here. We looked for several minutes before Ann literary had to point it out to us. And there it was so clear. The next thought was to grasp why it took us so long to see it.

Markus Kahre - Easy to miss if you don't look

Slaggratoriet – Where all the fun is happening

This was Mini’s favorite part because he was allowed to touch and play with the exhibition. Play a different kind of memory, make a track for a boll to roll, and lots of other fun things. There’s also an are where they are showing more optical illusions and one thing with a thermos and a photograph that is super awesome. It’s easy to just walk by and miss out on stuff. Take your time and really explore this place.

Slaggratoriet - Where all the fun is happening

Our visit to Verket & Avesta Art

We had such an amazing time at Verket and we can wholeheartedly recommend it to everyone that is visiting Avesta. We ended up spending several hours here and I think that we could have stayed for the whole day. Since we were on a schedule, we couldn’t stay longer. Another fact is that due to Covid-19, they have slots for visitors so that there aren’t too many people in the building at once . There are many different exhibitions, both temporary and permanent that are worth seeing.

It’s the whole vibe of this place. That and the fact that the people working here are so helpful and friendly. Ann ended up turning up around the building and she gave us pointers and insights that we would have missed if it weren’t for her. If you don’t have Verket on your bucket list, make sure to write it down!

An amazing gift shop at Verket in Avesta

After traveling in Dalarna for a while, we have noticed that all of the gift shops that are part of “Kulturresan” are nice. Gift shops are often pretty boring and filled with junk and knickknacks. However, at Verket you can really do some serious shopping. And best of all, the prices are fair – except for the perfumes from Homo Aquatis, they were pretty expensive. How about new but old-looking chests for about 25 euros?!

An amazing gift shop at Verket in Avesta
