Go On A Wild Safari Adventure At Atlanta’s Fully Immersive Attraction “Illuminarium”

Adron McCann | WABE

June 24th, 2021

Perhaps you’ve spent time on the Atlanta BeltLine’s East Side Trail — it’s a lovely and transporting space in the heart of the city, but unlikely to contain any inter-dimensional portals. That is, until July 2021, when the new fully immersive experience-based attraction Illuminarium is set to open on the BeltLine off of Ralph McGill Boulevard. At its first exhibit, “ WILD: Safari Experience , ” visitors will explore a virtual African landscape that activates all the senses, even smell. The attraction’s interactive environments respond to visitors’ movements using an array of cutting-edge technologies. Illuminarium CEO Alan Greenberg and Executive Vice President of Technology and Content Brian Allen joined “City Lights” Senior Producer Kim Drobes to describe the new attraction and how it was created.

Interview highlights:

Why immersive, and why the BeltLine?

“I think it’s no secret that there are some amazing experiences that have opened all over the world,” Greenberg said. “Things like Team Lab in Tokyo, and Atelier des Lumières in Paris, and Meow Wolf in Santa Fe. And we saw these trends, in what some people call the experience economy, and thought we could do something really special.”

“We saw the location on the BeltLine and it just felt perfect,” Greenberg said. “We just loved the energy — you know, when you’re on the BeltLine you’re kind of on an adventure, and we just loved that vibe. So, when we saw it, we went, ‘We’re going to put the world’s first Illuminarium here. We were actually looking in New York City for a long time to find the right spot, but when we saw this one, we said, ‘Let’s start here.’”

What is Illuminarium?

“What I like to say is, we have created, and are creating, a new media format,” Allen said. “We have a very large and beautiful canvas for audio, video, interaction, a true multisensory experience. And the advent of multiple technologies, including native 4k laser projection, audio tech capabilities, interactive capabilities powered by lidar, scent capabilities, allowed me and the team to really layer technologies together, to be more of a supporting character for the content that gets displayed.”

“When you walk into an Illuminarium, when you come to our Safari experience, you’re going to see it like reality, you’re going to hear it in an extraordinary way, you’re going to feel it, because of the haptic systems in our floor that give you … a rumble effect in your body, you’re going to smell it through our sense systems, and you’re actually going to affect it, through the lidar interactive system,” Greenberg said. “So when you’re walking down a dirt path, on our floors you’ll actually pick up dust as you walk … when you walk on the surface of the moon, you’ll actually leave footprints.”

Like virtual reality, but communal:

“Illuminarium is, in many ways, VR without the glasses, or without the headset,” Greenberg said. “And what that allows you to do, is to have a shared experience … to go to Africa with somebody, as you typically would, and to share those ‘wow’ moments, those head-turning moments of life.

“We think there’s never been a better time for people to come back together in a communal experience, which you just can’t do with VR.”

This holiday weekend the Atlanta BeltLine welcomes a new attraction called, “Illuminarium”.

This mind-blowing visual experience combines and amplifies techniques used in traditional motion picture production and virtual reality. It’s VR without the glasses! Illuminarium Experiences is a breakthrough global experiential entertainment company created by worldwide leaders in cinematic and interactive content. The attraction is scheduled to open to the general public Thursday, July 1.

To experience something like an African safari, it would normally take a day or two in travel, an updated passport and maybe a few vaccinations to prepare for it. Why do all of that when you can experience it right here in the middle of the city? The Illuminarium’s immersive venues will transport millions of visitors to places they only dream of experiencing by placing them “inside” the narrative.

The CEO of Illuminarium Experiences, Alan Greenberg, states that he chose Atlanta because he wanted to share this experience with his grandchildren. “Opening this here off the BeltLine will allow me to be with my family and also see how this experience will translate to other audiences in cities like Las Vegas and Miami,” Greenberg said.

The WILD: Safari Experience will introduce the first-of-its-kind Illuminarium experience through the beauty and splendor of Africa’s most exotic animals in their natural habitats. This experience will transport visitors to Africa through cinematic content shot by Radical Media who filmed these animals on location around South Africa, Botswana, Kenya and Tanzania. Visitors will be immersed in the authentic sounds and scenes all without leaving Atlanta’s BeltLine.

“In Illuminarium Experiences, we have created a global experiential brand that will produce unprecedented entertainment spectacles to transport consumers to many of the most coveted places and experiences on Earth, and beyond,” said Alan Greenberg. This new attraction will change the game and it’s right here in the heart of Atlanta. To learn more about the Illuminarium and to purchase tickets visit Illuminarium.com.

Illuminarium to Launch ‘Wild’ Immersive Experience in Atlanta

On July 1, experiential entertainment company Illuminarium Experiences will open its first location in Atlanta, Georgia, offering “Wild,” a virtual safari shot by RadicalMedia. The company’s immersive entertainment is intended to offer a kind of virtual reality — but without the clunky headsets. Instead, visitors walk through exhibits with 4K video on giant screens, spatial sound systems, haptic flooring and other interactive features including scent. Tickets for “Wild,” at $35, give the visitor an hour to walk through an 8,000-square-foot room.

Variety reports that, for $50, the visitor will get an “all-inclusive” ticket, a $10 voucher for the café or gift shop and flexible entry time. RadicalMedia chief executive Jon Kamen stated, “we are uniquely set up to take people to places they may never imagine being able to go.”

virtual safari atlanta

His company, which shot “Hamilton” performances for Disney+, has shot VR experiences before. But Kamen said that “Wild” is “VR without goggles … more of a communal experience.”

Production designer and architect David Rockwell and his Rockwell Group were involved with “Wild” as was investor Alan Greenberg, who joined the company as chief executive. Eldridge, the holding company headed by Todd Boehly, was a “significant investor” in the initial $100 million funding.

Manufacturers involved in the venture include Panasonic, which provides the 4K projectors, displays and camera solutions for the 350-feet long, 22-feet high canvas. Holoplot provides “proprietary beamforming and wavefield synthesis technology with the ability to localize and isolate sound” across the venue. Ouster offers its OS0 ultra-wide view lidar sensor “to be responsive to guests’ movements,” and Powersoft was responsible for a haptic infrasound floor that produces realistic sensations.

virtual safari atlanta

Greenberg stated that the “Wild” spectacle cost about $10 million and “used custom camera arrays that provide a 240-degree native field of view, shot on location to showcase animals in their native habitats across South Africa, Botswana, Kenya and Tanzania.” Illuminarium’s next production is “Spacewalk,” which will let visitors “stroll across Moon and Mars.” A third production will “take visitors into the depths of the world’s oceans.”

In addition to these experiences, Illuminarium After Dark, developed by the LAB at Rockwell Group, will be a nightlife destination, “letting visitors experience different virtual settings, from a Tokyo city street to fantastical dreamscapes.” Greenberg said the Illuminarium spaces will also be available to rent for private events. Legends, which manages operations at 150+ sports arenas and attractions, is the company’s operational partner.

After the Atlanta site opens its doors, Illuminarium plans to open another location in Las Vegas in January 2022 and Miami in spring 2022, with additional locations “under consideration” in New York, Chicago, Toronto, Montreal, Los Angeles and Austin. “As we expand internationally, we have to be aware of what translates culturally,” said Kamen.

African Safari from Atlanta virtually : How to tour?

Safari to Africa

Safari lovers from the US can virtually tour major destinations in African Safari from Atlanta thanks to Illumination . It has made virtual travel to top African tourist spots a reality.

Illumination uses visual experiences combined with techniques used in traditional motion picture production and virtual reality. They give users a delightful safari experience and, in this case, those who are in the west. In other words, it is a conduit immersing tourists on a virtual African safari to Kenya, South Africa, Botswana, and Tanzania.

Safari To Africa

The visual experience on an African Safari from Atlanta is the brainchild of brilliant minds in cinematic and interactive content. They pooled their wit and designed a platform offering a rare show of Africa’s gem; tourism.

What’s surprising with this technology is that its virtual reality technique does not require glasses. In retrospect, most virtual reality undertakings require glasses to activate the sense into the “other world”. it is great to experience a virtual African safari.

Users get an opportunity to bask, experience, and appreciate Africa’s top safari destinations through technology.

“This experience will transport visitors to Africa through cinematic content shot on location around South Africa, Botswana, Kenya, and Tanzania. Visitors will be immersed in the authentic sounds and scenes remotely,” Alan Greenberg, the CEO of Illumination Experiences told The Atlanta Voice.

Greenberg further adds that Illuminarium Experiences is now a global brand set to change the tourism landscape.

“We have created a global experiential brand that will produce unprecedented entertainment spectacles to transport consumers to many of the most coveted places and experiences on Earth, and beyond,” he remarks.

Premiere ticket sale is ongoing to allow users to enjoy their first virtual safari experience in Africa.

The technological marvel is the first of its kind in the world. And Illuminarium is tapping on the best scenes in Africa to create a bond for visitors looking at exploring the wild.

Covid-19 Pandemic

Global travel remains an unresolved issue since the Covid-19 pandemic broke in early 2020. Most African countries are yet to recover their tourism numbers since 2019. Things were slow for the better part of 2020, with many parks in Africa remaining closed.

Cessation of movement and curfews in Kenya, for example, hurt the tourism industry. National parks, game reserves, and wildlife sanctuaries were closed to the public for months. The government reopened them towards the last quarter of 2020.

And even so, there were no international tourists. This was the case in South African that is Africa’s most brutally hit by the pandemic.

At Kruger National Park, lions grew fond of the unusual silence in the vast park. Several viral photos show pride of lions napping on the road. For Tanzania, the story was different but did not record high numbers of international tourists.

The late Tanzanian President John Pombe Magufuli declared the country coronavirus-free in June 2020. There were no stringent protocols to travel to the East African country. As a result, it recorded a commendable number of international tourists when most African countries were on lockdown.

Great Migration

Towards the peak of the Great Migration in August last year, the luxurious  Mahali Mzuri  at the heart of Maasai Mara capitalized on technology. The Richard Branson-owned resort offered a real-time virtual safari on the Great Migration from the comfort of its luxurious tented suites.

Mahali Mzuri serenely sits in the savannah of the vast  Mara  and is adopting new technology where it captures all the action in real-time. It then transmits it back to the lodge.

This new feature initially projected a weekly video on the wildlife activities in the Mara before August 2020. It screened footage of wildlife activities from May when the facility closed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

By embracing technology, Mahali Mazuri kept its customers on the hook.

You Can Experience An African Safari In Atlanta, Here's How

"Wild: Safari Experience" is an immersive entertainment experience allowing visitors to go on an African safari without ever leaving Atlanta.

Ayah A. • May 26, 2021

virtual safari atlanta

Illuminarium is bringing an African safari to you with its “Wild: Safari Experience” according to PRNewsWire.com . This immersive entertainment experience will allow visitors to explore the African countries of Botswana , Kenya , Tanzania , and South Africa without ever leaving Atlanta .

Recently, immersive experiences such as the Van Gogh art exhibit, Wonderspaces, and Candytopia have found popularity in many cities. However, this experience will be the first of its kind, showcasing the majesty and magnificence of the beautiful animals of Africa undisturbed in their natural habitats.

Visitors will be able to see zebras, rhinos, giraffes, elephants, and lions up close inside of a 30,000-square-foot venue designed to provide the full African safari experience. It will captivate all your senses with sights, sounds, and smells you would experience if you were on an actual safari in the Motherland.

Participants in the experience will visit Kenya’s Masaai Mara national game reserve as well as South Africa’s Kruger National Park. “Wild: Safari Experience” opens on July 1. Children’s tickets start at $30 while adults’ start at $35. Tickets are on sale now at  Illuminarium.com .

Illuminarium CEO Alan Greenberg promises experiences that will “transport consumers to many of the most coveted places and experiences on Earth, and beyond.”

Another Illuminarium experience coming to Atlanta in 2022 will take visitors to outer space, giving them the opportunity to “walk on the moon.” The company will also be bringing experiences to Las Vegas’ Area15 in January, as well as to Miami’s Wynwood Arts District next Spring.

Throughout the pandemic, many safari lodges across Africa pivoted to virtual experiences, to allow animal enthusiasts to feel close to their favorite wild cats and the big 5. As countries begin allowing international visitors, we are sure in-person safari experiences will resume as well.
