Bur Dubai is an important legislative center. You’ll find the Al Fahidi Historical District and the Dubai Museum nearby – a rich collection that chronicles the city’s development. Visit the Grand Mosque with its enormous minarets, or the traditional textile souks, restaurants and shisha cafés lining Dubai Creek.

This area in "old Dubai" is a remarkable contrast to Downtown’s shiny newness. Be prepared to haggle in the traditional souks offering spices, textiles and gold jewelry. Wander along the port to watch fishermen transporting their catch on traditional dhows. Deira City Centre Mall has dining and entertainment for the masses.

Umm Suqeim is a quiet community located along Jumeriah Beach. Wild Wadi Waterpark offers family fun in the form of slides and simulated surfing, and Jumeriah Beach is perfect for getting some sun. Madinat Jumeirah Souk is an Arabian market that’s great for antiques, oils, art, and more. The 7-star Burj Al Arab hotel is also in this area.

Jumeirah is primarily a residential area, but it's also home to the lively Madinat Souk (a traditional Arabian market). The area is filled with low-rise villas. It’s fun to rent a bike and ride along Jumeirah Beach, with its 30 miles of pristine (and private) coastline – head to Jumeirah Beach Park for a publicly accessible area.

Oud Metha is a large residential area only 10 minutes from Dubai International Airport. The designers of Wafi City and Raffles Hotel took some inspiration from ancient Egypt when designing the buildings at this shopping, dining and entertainment complex, which are shaped like pyramids. Ay caramba! Al Karama does a roaring trade in replica goods. Burrow through its bustling backstreets and “secret rooms” to peruse endless arrays of “Prada” handbags, “Rolex” watches and “Gucci” shoes. When it comes to food, the neighbourhood is 100% genuine. Pop into Pakistani restaurant Ravi to savour spicy Biryani chicken and sweet lassi yoghurt.

About Dubai

Including tips for the best time to visit dubai.

Home to Burj Khalifa, the world's tallest building, Dubai is synonymous with soaring skyscrapers that rise beautifully above sunny beaches and desert panoramas. The hallmark of this city is its diversity of attractions coupled with an abundance of opportunities to experience Arabian hospitality.

You can expect to have a packed schedule of things to do when visiting this modern Arabian city, from theme parks to desert safaris. One of the standout city landmarks is the Burj Al Arab, a sail-shaped structure set against the backdrop of the Arabian Sea. A short drive away is Downtown Dubai, home to Dubai Fountain – a visually exciting spectacle of illuminated water jets dancing to music. Thrill seekers can even experience adrenaline-pumping action at Skydive Dubai, Deep Dive Dubai and Dubai Parks and Resorts.

No trip to Dubai is complete without a shopping spree at its glitzy malls and traditional souks, or marketplaces. The Walk at Jumeirah Beach Residence, an open-air promenade, comes alive during the winter months while Mall of the Emirates and Dubai Mall offer year-round opportunities to shop for luxury goods. For local souvenirs, hop over to Spice Souk, Perfume Souk or Gold Souk.

Dubai's sun-drenched coastline – stretching from Jebel Ali to Al Mamzar – is dotted with numerous public beaches, offering everything from energising water sports to tranquil swimming spots. Kite surfers and paddleboarding enthusiasts can head to Kite Beach, while sunbathers can relax at Sunset Beach.

Dubai is served by two airports, Dubai International Airport and Al Maktoum International Airport, the former being one of the busiest airports in the world.

What other travelers say about dubai.

I had a amazing time at Atana excellent service

May 6, 2024

I had a amazing time at Atana excellent service I would like to thank Ayyoub at the front desk and Yihenew also Prem at the restaurant and everyone at Atana for the best experience in Dubai thank you so much I will definitely be coming back.

There is always something new happening or getting built in...

There is always something new happening or getting built in Dubai. I love the place for some bargain shopping of branded items such as clothing, shoes, electronics and other household items. Your experience start from the time you land at the airport from automated immigration to renting cars and buying local sim. Even on your way back you have the option of self-checkin, automated baggage drop, e-gate immigration and automated boarding at the gates. All these things, though small add up to your comfort during travel. I recently travelled from terminal 3 and I was literally spoiled for choices when can to the lounges I could avail. Dubai never fails to amaze you, no matter how many times you have visited in the past.

Dubai was never somewhere I intended to visit due to...

May 5, 2024

Dubai was never somewhere I intended to visit due to pre-conceptions. I was blown away with how wrong I was. The standard of cleanliness everywhere was exceptional! No pot holes, litter, graffiti, all areas were so well kept. We stayed at the Premiere Inn for a couple of nights, right next to the hotel, the standards there were far superior to what we experience in the UK. Highly recommend a visit to Global Village, a spectacular place. So many shops, malls all of different cultures/countries. Take a spare pair of feet as you'll need them. We were there until 1am but could have stayed longer. The cost of taxis, hotels, food were all really very reasonable almost too good to be true. We didn't stay or eat high end level but all customer service and standard were impeccable. We all agreed we can't wait to return. Family of 3, aged 48, 27 and 16.

Dubai was an interesting place to visit.

May 4, 2024

Dubai was an interesting place to visit. The 8-10 lane highways are daunting and the traffic can move very slowly. The metro was a great alterntative and very easy to navigate. There are a large number of sites to visit and activities to do in Dubai. A visit to the Dubai mall and Burg Kalifa fountain shows are all worthwhile. Take time to spot the luxury cars passing by you all over Dubai.

Dubai because is a vibrant metropolis with infrastructure development, excellent economy travel routes and nice beaches available for swimming all year round. The location in the Middle East region makes the travel destination especially appealing due to multicultural spirit and dialogue.

Verified reviews from real guests.

We have more than 70 million property reviews, all from real, verified guests .

How does it work?

It starts with a booking.

The only way to leave a review is to first make a booking. That's how we know our reviews come from real guests who have stayed at the property.

Followed by a trip

When guests stay at the property, they check out how quiet the room is, how friendly the staff is, and more.

And finally, a review

After their trip, guests tell us about their stay. We check for naughty words and verify the authenticity of all guest reviews before adding them to our site.

My UAE trip with Grayline UAE was simply amazing. Great tour! The tour guide of Grayline was very knowledgeable and amusing! Driver was equally nice. The visit to the Sheik Zayed mosque, palaces, art gallery and date market were great! The buffet meal provided during the tour was reasonably priced and tasty. I would definitely go on this tour again. Take cash and stick to a budget if you plan to buy anything at the art galleries - they are very persuasive and would make you buy all the stuff in them! And you'll end up buying more than you intend! Great experience! Awesome time spent with Dubai Private Tour!

Explore Dubai & Abu Dhabi 4 Nights 5 Days

Fabulous tour exploring all the highlights of Dubai. We started with a tour of the Burj Khalifa the Worlds tallest building, unbelievable views from the top. We also had a very nice tour of Abu Dhabi which is famous for their delicious dates and sparkling blue waters of the Persian Gulf. We were also treated to a stunning cruise on Dubai Creek with its fantastic buffet and out of this world views. Very talented entertainment was also included. The grand finale of our tour was the Desert Safari with a tasty barbecue and thrilling entertainment including a fire breathing dancer. I just cannot express how grand this tour was. Thank You

Dubai Luxury Holidays Package 6 Night 7 Days Tour

Dubai Luxury Holidays Package 6 Night 7 Days

I generally do not post my feedback but our recent Indus tour was just outstanding Excellent value for money. We were happy with both the hotel selection and their guides. Dubai was one of our bucket list destinations and we are glad we choose Dazzling Dubai.

All of the tour guides were excellent and very knowledgeable. My only issues were that we paid for a 5 star hotel and we got a 4 star hotel. I let a representative know about this hotel discrepancy and nothing was done or corrected. It was never addressed. Also, we were not informed that we would not be seeing certain listed sites until I asked why we didn't see them. I was then told they were closed due to Covid. Those sites are still listed in the online brochure and thus included in the price.

A lot of time was wasted waiting for tickets to the aquarium and zoo. We could have explored the mall for the hour instead of waiting on tickets. We also had to do unnecessary walking at the mall for the guide to show us where to meet after events. We could have used the time to explore the mall. We also had to wait at least an hour at the marina in the heat while dressed for our cruise. No one told us why!! These days were not as organized as others!!

What people love about dubai tours.

Sehr viel gesehen, sehr gute Organisation, gutes Essen, ausgezeichneter Reiseleiter, insgesamt sehr zufriedenstellend.
Tour bus audio system wasn't working properly so couldn't hear what tour guide was talking about.

17+ TOP Dubai Sights & Tourist Attractions (+Map & Tips)

Looking for the  best things to do in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates,  and feeling overwhelmed? Deciding which of the most popular Dubai attractions to visit is indeed not easy, especially if you are visiting the city for the first time and have limited time, not even to mention the budget.

From gleaming skyscrapers and modern landmarks to the desert and historic souks, Dubai has something for everyone. But it’s also a rapidly growing city with countless new tourist attractions springing up like mushrooms and choosing which places to visit and which ones to skip might look like a daunting task…

So to help you figure out where to go and what to see in Dubai, in this guide we share the  VERY BEST sights and TOP tourist attractions in Dubai that are worth your time the most . In addition, we also include a few fun experiences for those looking to experience Dubai beyond the ‘musts’.

We also created a  map of all the top places that should help you plan your Dubai sightseeing itinerary. You can find it at the bottom of this article. In addition, for every place featured in this guide, we include some practical tips that will help you make the most of your visit. Take a look!

Good to know:   We list the must-see places and experiences first, followed by some additional tips for things to do in Dubai further down the list.

If you are short on time, concentrate on the top sights indicated as ‘must-see’ first. In addition, see if you can also fit in some of the ‘highly recommended’ experiences listed further down.

But if you have more time and are looking for even more ideas for places to visit and interesting tourist attractions beyond the most popular sights, be sure to check the complete list.

TIP: If you are not sure how to plan your trip, on our blog, you can also find sample itineraries for first-time visitors: a Dubai stopover itinerary (from 6 hours to 1-2 days) and a detailed Dubai itinerary for up to one week .

Best things to do in Dubai and top places to visit

Here are the main landmarks, best sights, and top tourist attractions in Dubai:

1. Burj Khalifa

If there is one place you have to see in Dubai, it’s Burj Khalifa , the tallest building in the world. This iconic skyscraper is the most visited landmark in Dubai.

While you will see Burj Khalifa from all over the city, it’s most impressive when seen from the bottom. So don’t miss that!

In addition, no trip to Dubai would be complete without ascending to the 124th and 125th floors for breathtaking views of the city skyline, coastline, and desert. For an extra price, you can also visit the SKY Level on the 148th floor.

Good to know: Standard tickets include timed-entry access to 124-125th floors. However, even with a dedicated time slot, be prepared to queue for a long time. The SKY Level 124,125, and 148th floors ticket is more expensive, but includes skip-the-line access for the security check and elevator. It also includes access to the lounge with snacks and drinks.

PRO TIP: Whatever option you choose, be sure to book your tickets online in advance or you may not be able to visit at all. If you want to catch the sunset at the top, be sure to book a time slot at least 1.5 hours before the sunset time (just beware that those time slots are also more expensive).

Burj Khalifa - must see in Dubai

2. Dubai Mall

You might be wondering why in the world we list a shopping mall as one of the must-see places in Dubai… Well, the Dubai Mall is not just a shopping paradise, but a destination in itself. Plus, it’s located right at the Burj Khalifa so you’ll come here anyway.

The largest shopping mall in the world, Dubai Mall has over 1,200 shops, including high-end designer stores and flagship fashion brands. In addition, you can choose from more than 200 restaurants and food outlets. But it’s worth coming here even if you are not interested in shopping and dining.

You can’t miss the gigantic Dubai Aquarium – the centerpiece of the Mall, or you can get a ticket and visit inside. There are also huge waterfalls, a 155 million-year-old dinosaur skeleton, an Olympic-size ice skating rink, a mini-city for kids KidZania , and countless other attractions. You could literally spend several days in here and still not see it all…

TIP: If you want to visit the aquarium, opt for a combo ticket that includes Burj Khalifa + Dubai Aquarium. Otherwise, the aquarium price is really steep for what it is.

3. Dubai Fountain Show

The captivating Dubai Fountain Show can be seen on the Burj Lake right outside the Dubai Mall, at the foot of Burj Khalifa. It’s a mesmerizing water, music, and light show that takes place multiple times a day and is FREE to watch.

The world’s tallest performing fountain, it dances for a few minutes to a selection of different melodies ranging from popular hits to traditional Arabic and classical music.

Good to know: The Dubai Fountain shows run every half an hour from 6 PM to 11 PM. There is also a performance at 1.30 PM, plus at 1 PM on weekdays and 2 PM on weekends.

PRO TIP: If you are looking for something nice to do in Dubai, book a boat ride on Burj Lake during a fountain show . It takes just 30 minutes and is not expensive (definitely for Dubai standards). Everyone in our family really enjoyed it.

4. Old Dubai & Traditional Souks

Dubai has more to offer than its modern landmarks and one of the best places to experience the authentic side of Dubai is its Old Town .

Be sure to visit the historic neighborhood of Al Fahidi (formerly known as Bastakiya), cross Dubai Creek on a traditional  Abra boat , and don’t miss the best traditional markets in Dubai – the Gold Souk and Spice Souk .

To be completely honest, the Al Fahidi neighborhood is not that authentic, but has the feel of an overly nicely restored open-air museum. You can wander through a few picturesque narrow alleyways lined with wind-tower houses, art galleries, and quaint cafes. There are also several tiny museums and some traditional shops selling souvenirs to tourists.

Nevertheless, it’s the best place to catch a glimpse of old Dubai and get a better understanding of the fascinating journey of the fascinating expansion of the UAE in just a few decades. The transformation of a few tiny fishing villages in the desert to the global metropolises of the 21st century is nothing short of remarkable.

PRO TIP:  Visit the old town  with a local guide ! That way, you can be sure to see all the musts but also learn more about the history of Dubai. The tours are very affordable and some also include local food and drinks. We visited the Dubai old town and traditional markets on different occasions, most recently with this highly-rated tour and I can highly recommend it as one of the top experiences in Dubai.

5. Dubai Marina

Surrounded by towering skyscrapers and filled with luxury yachts, Dubai Marina is one of the must-see places where you can experience the glitz and glamour of Dubai.

The best way to explore the area is by taking a leisurely stroll along the promenade known as Marina Walk. It’s almost 3 kilometers long and is lined with upscale restaurants, trendy cafes, and luxury boutiques. If you don’t want to walk the entire length, focus on the area close to Marina Mall or join a guided  e-scooter tour .

For a unique perspective, hop on a luxury yacht cruise – it’s a great and very relaxing way to see some of the most impressive skylines. If you are looking for a more traditional experience, you can also opt for a dhow dinner cruise to admire the dazzling skyline illuminated against the night sky.

There is so much more to do at the Dubai Marina than just enjoy the scenery! You can go  jet skiing , parasailing , zip line across the Marina , or even dine in the sky .

6. Dubai Desert

Dubai has grown into a huge ultra-modern metropolis, but its roots are still in the desert. So no trip would be complete without seeing the Dubai desert. Even if just for the contrast and to get a better understanding of how remarkable the journey of the UAE has been.

Let me be very honest with you – the desert around Dubai is not that impressive, especially if we compare it to places like e.g. Sossusvlei in Namibia or Death Valley in the USA. However, there are many exhilarating desert safari experiences, such as dune bashing in a 4×4 , quad rides , camel riding , hot-air balloon flights , etc. and these are well worth your time.

In addition, most Dubai safari tours include a visit to a desert camp, built in a traditional Bedouin style. Here, you can indulge in Arabian BBQ dinner and taste all kinds of local food, see the national bird of the UAE – the falcon, or get a henna tattoo. In the evenings, you can also see all kinds of traditional performances such as Tanoura dance, belly dancing, or fire shows.

Good to know: There are  many desert tour options and most of them last 4 to 7 hours. The desert camp experience is similar on all evening tours, but be sure to read the tour description to choose the main activity (jeep, quad, camel, etc.) that best aligns with your interests. For example, most desert tours include a very short camel ride (for a picture), but only a few offer a longer camel ride experience.

Our experience:  We have been on two desert tours in Dubai (on different trips) and really enjoyed them both. One of them included dune bashing in a jeep and the other one – camel riding . They both included dinner and other desert camp experiences.

7. Dubai Museum Of The Future

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

The Museum of the Future is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Dubai. The remarkable building is a must-see, but the museum itself is quite interesting and well worth a few hours of your time.

The museum is very interactive and showcases Dubai’s vision of the future and what it will look like some 50 years from now. They cover all kinds of topics like space travel, artificial intelligence, and robotics, but also climate change, healthcare, spirituality, etc.

PRO TIP:   Reserve tickets for the museum at least a few weeks before your trip. When we traveled, they were sold out for almost 3 weeks, not even to mention being able to pick a time slot that fits your itinerary. Also, if you can, book the first time slot in the morning so that you can enjoy the interactive exhibits before it gets too crowded.

8. Sky Views Observatory & Sky Edge Walk

Sky Views Observatory  offers a great view of Dubai’s Downtown. It’s also one of the best places to admire the iconic Burj Khalifa from a higher angle at a rather close distance.

In addition, you can also walk over a glass-bottom walkway, slide down a transparent tube at the side of the building, or – for an additional fee – do the Sky Edge Walk on an open-air platform on the 52nd floor.

Good to know:  Regular tickets are very affordable and much cheaper than the Burj Khalifa tickets. But if you are not afraid of heights and have some extra time, we highly recommend a ticket that also includes the Edge Walk – it’s one of the most unique things to do in Dubai!

Sky View Observatory - best things to do in Dubai

9. Global Village

Global Village Dubai  is one of the most popular attractions in Dubai, popular with locals as well as international visitors. Just as the name suggests, it’s a place where you can experience a wide variety of cultures from all over the world.

With over 90 countries represented, it’s a unique opportunity to get acquainted with different countries, sample traditional foods, or purchase some interesting souvenirs. There are also cultural shows and live performances.

It’s a bit like a big country fair, but very unique because of its global character.

Good to know:  A visit to Global Village is very affordable and  entry tickets  cost just around $6. However, you’ll have to pay extra for most of the rides and attractions inside.

PRO TIP:  Avoid weekends and try to arrive around the opening time (usually around 4 pm, but during Ramadan around 6 pm). Friday and Saturday evenings are the busiest.

10. Palm Jumeirah

The Palm Jumeirah  is a man-made palm-tree-shaped island in the Arabian Gulf and connected to the city via tunnels and bridges and tunnels. The Palm is home to upscale residences, luxury hotels, and beachfront resorts, including the famous Atlantis, The Palm .

There are several places of interest to see at the Palm including the best water park in Dubai, Atlantis Aquaventure and Dolphin Bay, Lost Chambers Aquarium, and several luxurious sky pool experiences.

If you just want to catch a glimpse of this remarkable feat of engineering, visit The View at The Palm Observatory . From here, you can enjoy 360° views of the city and the Arabian Gulf, including an elevated view of this unique palm island.

PRO TIP: For the best aerial views and to fully appreciate The Palm, opt for a  sightseeing helicopter tour .

Palm Jumeirah - top places to see in Dubai

11. Burj Al Arab

Burj Al Arab  is one of the most recognizable symbols of Dubai. The sail-shaped luxury hotel was opened in December 1999 and was the first one in a series of Dubai’s most remarkable landmarks that were built in the 21st century.

One of the world’s most luxurious and most expensive hotels, Burj Al Arab is not only impressive from the outside. Inside, you can admire its lavish interiors and find some extravagant experiences such as its world-famous gold cappuccino.

Good to know: A stay at this hotel will quickly cost you over $1,500 per night. But a tour of the interior is much more affordable. For an additional fee, you can upgrade to the luxury tour to include a visit to the 25th floor (where the Royal Suites are located) and a sip of the gold cappuccino.

Burj Al Arab - top sights in Dubai

12. Souk Madinat Jumeirah

NICE TO SEE

Located just near the Burj Al Arab,  Souk Madinat Jumeirah  is a bustling indoor market that combines traditional Arabian architecture and Middle Eastern charm with modern-day comforts such as air conditioning and meticulously clean facilities.

You will find an array of little shops here selling all kinds of traditional merchandise and souvenirs. There are also bakeries, cafes, and a variety of restaurants.

With small rivers, little bridges, and traditional Arabian architecture, the area feels like a charming little town. You can walk around or take a boat on the picturesque waterways offering nice views of the Burj Al Arab.

Good to know: You can easily combine a visit to the Souk with that of Burj Al Arab. Boat rides can just be booked and paid at the spot.

Souk Madinat Jumeirah - top places in Dubai

13. Dubai Frame

The Dubai Frame  is another remarkable landmark that you have to see in Dubai. This colossal picture frame is visible from afar so you can’t really miss it. But it’s also possible to visit it inside.

The 150-meter-high observation deck has a glass-bottomed walkway and also offers panoramic 360° views of both old and new Dubai.

The views are quite nice, but not nearly comparable to those from Burj Khalifa, Sky Views, or the View at The Palm. On the other hand, the structure is absolutely unique and we personally found it worth a visit.

Good to know:  Depending on the season and time of day, it can be very busy here. Be sure to  book tickets online  and if you can, try to visit either early in the morning or in the evening.

Dubai Frame - one of the most popular tourist attractions in Dubai

14. Miracle Garden

Miracle Garden  is a must-see in Dubai for everyone who loves flowers, colors, and all kinds of quirky displays. From cartoon characters like the Smurfs to gigantic swans and from colorful castles to a life-size A380 Airbus plane – everything here is covered in flowers.

The world’s largest natural flower garden, Dubai Miracle Garden features over 150 million flowers. However, don’t expect a big variety of flowers here. There are not many plants that do well in such a hot and dry climate, so the majority of floral displays are created using petunias.

Good to know:  Buy skip-the-line tickets online and plan an hour or two for a visit. It’s quietest in the morning. However, many people combine a visit here to that of the nearby Global Village, and the latter only opens late in the afternoon, so keep that in mind if you want to visit both attractions on the same day.

Miracle Garden - best things to do in Dubai

15. Atlantis Aquaventure Waterpark & Lost Chambers Aquarium

NICE TO SEE (MUST DO if visiting with kids)

Atlantis Aquaventure Waterpark is the biggest water park in the world and by far the best one in Dubai. Featuring over 100 water rides and attractions from splash pools to adrenaline-rushing water slides, Aquaventure is great for all ages.

In addition, you can also meet sea lions or swim with dolphins, and enjoy all kinds of water sports. You can visit the Lost Chambers Aquarium which is located at the same place.

This is a must-do if you are visiting Dubai with kids (especially teenagers!), but it’s definitely not just for families.

PRO TIP:  Atlantis Aquaventure tickets are cheaper if booked online, and you can save a bit more if you book at least a week in advance. We recommend  a combo ticket  that includes entry to the Lost Chambers Aquarium. Here you can find more ticket options , including dolphin experiences.

16. AYA Universe

AYA Universe  is one of our family’s favorite places to visit in Dubai. It’s not a must-do, but it’s also a very unique experience that will leave you speechless.

A visit to AYA is like stepping into a series of different fairytale-like worlds, with colorful light displays and captivating high-tech experiences. Some of the rooms reminded us of the beautiful dreamy universe created in Avatar films .

We visited AYA Universe with our teens who are hard to impress, and they loved it. We spent much more time than expected here, wandering through different rooms and simply sitting down and enjoying the moment. It’s such a nice and positive experience. We loved it!

Good to know:  Book your  tickets online and count about 45-60 minutes for a visit. If you want to enjoy it without too many people around, we recommend booking the earliest time slot.

Interesting places to visit in Dubai - AYA Universe

17. Dubai Beaches

Dubai has many beaches and since the temperatures are suitable for swimming the whole year round, you may want to plan to spend some time at the beach. By far the best way to do this is by choosing a hotel that has its own private beach or is located near one of the public beaches.

One of the nicest public beaches in Dubai is Marina Beach at Jumeirah Beach Residence. There is a very nice waterfront area here with tons of cafes and restaurants and lots of hotels. Sofitel Dubai Jumeirah Beach is one of the most popular options here.

We once stayed at Doubletree by Hilton JBR Beach nearby which has its own private beach, but we walked to this area all the time because it was so nice. We had most of our lunches and dinners at Marina Beach unless we were away sightseeing.

Jumeirah Public Beach is another beautiful Dubai beach that is well worth visiting. In addition to white sands and swimming, here you can also enjoy a view of the iconic Burj Al Arab which makes a great backdrop for your vacation pictures. Jumeirah Beach Hotel is a very nice place to stay in this area and all guests enjoy free access to the adjacent Wild Wadi Waterpark.

La Mer Beach further north and closer to the city center is also worth checking out. This area is still developing but already has a nice hip feel. We recently stayed at the Rove La Mer Beach Hotel and really enjoyed it. The location is also great for sightseeing since it’s so close to the downtown area.

More Ideas for Things to Do in Dubai

There is SO MUCH to see and do in Dubai that it’s impossible to cover all those experiences in one article (or visit in one trip). Nevertheless, I want to highlight some additional places and attractions that I think are certainly worth it.

So here are some additional recommendations for fun things to do in Dubai:

  • La Perle by Dragone is the #1 show in Dubai. This is a mind-blowing acrobatic show in, on, and above water and in the air. If you enjoy Cirque de Soleil shows, you’ll love this one!
  • The Green Planet   is an indoor rainforest with a wide variety of tropical plants, birds, and animals such as sloths, squirrel monkeys, etc. It’s great for families but is enjoyable for all age groups.
  • Dubai Butterfly Garden is a great place to see all kinds of colorful butterflies from all over the world. It’s located just next to the earlier-mentioned Miracle Garden so you can easily visit both.
  • iFly Dubai is an indoor skydiving center. If you ever wanted to try skydiving but didn’t dare, this is your chance to give it a try in a safe and controlled environment. Our kids loved this!
  • Skydiving . If you rather try the real thing, there are quite a few possibilities to go skydiving in Dubai. The views are amazing!
  • Skiing and snow experiences . If you want to experience winter in the desert, you can go skiing in Dubai. But that’s not it! They have other snow experiences as well such as a Giant Ball, Bobsled, Tubing Run, and Bump Car to mention a few.
  • Water sports , jet skiing , parasailing , etc.
  • Theme parks and water parks. There is no shortage of all kinds of theme parks in Dubai. Some of the best include IMG Worlds of Adventure and LEGOLAND Dubai (this one also has a water park). If you are looking for more water parks, check out Wild Wadi as well – it’s a lot smaller than Aquaventure if you want to avoid the big crowds.
  • Day trips to the other Emirates. The most popular are day trips to Abu-Dhabi , but you can also visit Al Ain ‘Garden City’ or go on a snorkeling day trip to Fujairah .

Map of Top Dubai Attractions

To help you get a better idea of where all the main Dubai attractions are located, we created a  map  indicating all the main points of interest and top sights mentioned in this article.

This should help you plan your time in Dubai. However, please keep in mind that distances between places are big and traffic is very busy. Even with the skip-the-line tickets, you’ll often need several hours for the main attractions and can only visit a few of them per day. So plan your time well!

In addition, remember that Dubai can get scorching hot, and not just during the summer months. So dress appropriately, stay hydrated, and plan outdoor activities during the cooler parts of the day.

TIP:  For more information and helpful tips, please also see our guide with top travel tips and things we wish we had known before visiting Dubai via the link below. It’s an essential read when planning a first trip!

If you want to print the map or see it in a bigger window, click on ‘View larger map’ in the top right corner.

So, this is our guide to the very best things to do in Dubai. I hope it gives you a better idea of what to expect and helps you plan an unforgettable trip.

If you are still wondering whether Dubai is worth a trip… Yes, it is! Even though it feels quite artificial and polished, it’s also a very unique destination that will impress even the biggest skeptics. It’s well worth seeing (and experiencing), at least once!

Places to visit in Dubai

Dubai is like a glittering oasis in a desert landscape. When you are approaching by road, the towering Burj Khalifa pierces the skyline, slowly guiding you into the city. As you approach Dubai via air, a shimmering display of the glass buildings towering up from the ground below will take your breath away. Enjoy the visual delights as the top Dubai attractions come into sight as your plane eases in for the airport. The Burj Khalifa stands tall like a giant obelisk, while the Burj Al Arab further away resembles a masted ship ready to set off to sail. The artificially reclaimed lands of Dubai Palm Islands and the World Islands will leave you awed.

To allow you to make the most of your Dubai trip, here is our recommended list of unmissable places to visit in Dubai

  • Burj Khalifa

We recommend that you start your Dubai tour with the tallest free-standing man-made structure at 828m high, the Burj Khalifa. The Burj Khalifa observation deck is the highest outdoor observation deck in the world. This is by far the leader amongst all Dubai attractions, popular with travellers of all kinds.

Located very close to the Burj Khalifa , the Dubai Mall is one of the most popular places to visit in Dubai. This is the second-largest shopping mall in the world by total land area, and is also the home of the famous Dubai Shopping Festival. The latest amongst the list of Dubai tourist places is the Dubai Frame, located within the Zabeel Park. This monument is shaped like a giant ornate picture frame, and provides an insight into the past, present and future idea of Dubai. While the Old Dubai gallery shares information about Dubai’s past through interactive displays and 3D technology, at the Sky Deck level the present Dubai view is shown through a panoramic viewing gallery enhanced by various augmented reality effects. The Future Dubai gallery uses a combination of specially produced audio and video effects to create an image of a possible future Dubai. The entire visit is quite a unique experience.

What to eat in Dubai

From international cafes to restaurants specializing in Emirati cuisines to celebrity chefs cooking up a storm every day, there is a wide-array of culinary options to choose from in Dubai. Eat out at celebrity restaurants or enjoy a meal in a family friendly and instagrammable location.

Here are some tips on the best food in Dubai and how to enjoy it:

Street food: If you enjoy non vegetarian food, try some of the street food in Dubai’s Bur Dubai or Deira areas. Dubai’s traditional pizza, called Manousheh , is a delicious flatbread topped with salty Akkawi cheese, zaatar herbs and olive oil. Best had for breakfast, it comes along with a creamy labneh, jam, minced lamb and eggs. This is probably the best street food in Dubai! If you like spice, you can also try the Lahem Bl Ajin , Lebanese bread with spiced ground meat topping also known as “Arabian pizza”.

Traditional specialties: The famous Chelo Kebab is a combination of kebabs served with saffron-scented basmati rice, with a pat of butter added on. Likewise, Shish Tawook is a kebab served in traditional style and sandwiched in bread, while Al Machboos is a popular dish of rice and meat cooked together in one pot. Al Harees is a dish saved up for weddings, Ramadan and Eid in Dubai. Meat and wheat are baked together into a salty delight; you can’t stop at one.

Sweet delights: While on your Dubai trip, try some of the local sugary concoctions such as Luqaimat , a deep fried Ramadan special dumpling made of milk, sugar, flour, butter, cardamom and saffron. You can also try the Kanafeh , a traditional dessert made of rose syrup and sweet cream cheese and topped with chopped pistachios.

Vegetarian food in Dubai: Apart from Indian food, you can also try some local vegetarian specialties in Dubai, such as Tabbouleh which is made from tomatoes, green onions, cucumber and seasoned with lemon and fresh mint, or the Fattoush salad made with fried or toasted Pita bread pieces complemented with a lemon dressings and greens. Most of the hotels offered in MakeMyTrip’s Dubai packages will also arrange vegetarian food if requested in advance.

Indian restaurants in Dubai: Dubai has a large number of Indian restaurants to suit all budgets. Some of the more famous ones include Bombay Brasserie, Khyber, Indego by Vineet, Chutney’s, Gazebo, Mint Leaf, Chor Bazaar, etc.

If you are in for some experimenting, you can try a variety of street food in Deira, explore beachside eateries at Kite Beach, or enjoy a lavish dinner at a rooftop restaurant in Dubai Marina. With people of many different nationalities residing in Dubai, adding to its cuisines, there are a wide variety of flavours to enjoy here.

Fun things to do in Dubai

The regular Dubai sightseeing covers the most popular places to visit in Dubai through a half-day or full-day Dubai city tour. For something more, there are a number of interesting and fun things to do in Dubai for travellers of all kinds.

Desert Safari with BBQ dinner

Add a thrilling element to your Dubai holiday package with a memorable Desert Safari along with your friends and family. Travel out from Dubai to the golden dunes outside the city, in a 4X4 vehicle with an experienced driver. Enjoy an adrenalin-pumping off-road dune bashing session of 30 to 40 minutes, and take gorgeous pictures of the sunset. Continue to a desert camp where you will enjoy a delicious barbecue dinner along with musical entertainment under the stars.

Ski Dubai

Ski Dubai, the first indoor ski resort in the Mid-East, is located inside the Mall of the Emirates, one of the most famous places in Dubai. This is the perfect place to visit in Dubai for a day of fun with your family. No matter what the weather outside is, Ski Dubai will always be a fantastic sub-zero winter wonderland covered with snow! Here, you can try skiing and snowboarding at 5 different slopes for varying levels of expertise. Ski Dubai also offers classes with professional instructors. There is also a 4500 sq. m. Snow Park, with activities like tobogganing, tubing, zorbing, wall climbing, bob sled rides, and snow play zones. Children will love the Penguin Colony at Ski Dubai, where they can meet King and Gentoo Snow Penguins.

Dhow Marina Cruise

The Dhow cruise is one of the most popular things to do in Dubai for most travellers visiting for the first time. The Dubai Marina, the world’s largest man-made marina, is a peaceful canal lined with famous skyscrapers like the Dubai Marina Mall and the Burj Al Arab. Sailing on the canal on a traditional wooden boat called “Dhow” is a wonderful experience. You will not only enjoy the boat cruise, but also get a great perspective of the wondrous architecture of the area from the boat accompanied by the sound of traditional music in the background. Depending on your preference, you can book a Dhow Cruise with Dinner, or a Sunset Dhow Cruise, or just a regular daytime cruise. Whichever Dhow Marina Cruise you book for your Dubai trip, you are sure to have a great experience!

This almost did not need to be said. Dubai and shopping go hand in hand! Whether you prefer to shop at the upscale Dubai malls such as the Dubai Mall, the Mall of the Emirates, and the Mercato Mall, go bargain hunting at the Dubai Outlet Mall, or stock up on jewellery at the Gold Souk Dubai, Dubai has a lot to offer the serious shopper. If you are looking for traditional products like textiles, ceramics, handicrafts, spices and other souvenirs to bring back from your Dubai holiday, we highly recommend a visit to Meena Bazaar in the Bur Dubai area. This is one of Dubai’s famous places for traditional shopping. If you are a really committed shopper, do consider booking your Dubai trip package to coincide with the Dubai Shopping Festival dates.

Party with a scenic view

Enjoy an evening out in Dubai with your friends and loved ones. We recommend an evening at Shimmers , one of Dubai’s famous places for a special meal. This beachside restaurant in Palm Jumeirah is known for its beautiful location and enchanting views of the Burj Al Arab. Enjoy authentic Greek cuisine in a casual yet intimate atmosphere. This is an ideal inclusion in a Dubai honeymoon package. You can also head to the Lounge at the Armani Hotel for an aperitif or nightcap in quiet luxury, enjoying an unforgettable view of the Dubai Fountain.

Jumeirah Beach Walk

Jumeirah Beach is very upscale and pleasant part of Dubai. The Walk at Jumeirah Beach is a popular open-air hangout full of fashion boutiques, retail stores, cafes and restaurants. Visitors can enjoy the incredible views of the water and the pleasant sea breeze, shop for unique handicrafts and designer products, and enjoy the buzzing vibe of this extremely chic walkway. This place is also where you are likely to see some of the best cars in the world! It is especially popular at night.

Here’s one for the adrenalin junkies. Skydiving in Dubai promises an opportunity to experience freefall right over the unique Palm Jumeirah landscape, or if you prefer it, over the desert outside the city. Experienced instructors guide you every step of the way, so that even beginners can try their first skydive in Dubai. Both tandem and solo skydives are available. It is a heavenly experience worth every second. A child-friendly setting to get a sense of skydiving is available at iFly Dubai , a 10m acrylic glass tunnel for an indoor skydiving simulation experience at Mirdif City Centre.

The 5 most Instagram-worthy luxury experiences in Dubai

Dubai’s high-flying lifestyle is tempting in many ways, with top-of-the-world experiences to explore. Splash out on these unique things to do in Dubai:

Gyrocopter Ride:   If you wish to take a bird’s eye view of Dubai’s glittering skyline and cityscape, try the gyrocopter experience. This is a small private aircraft, rather like a helicopter, that seats two people and operates from the Dubai Marina. Along with your pilot, you will fly over the Dubai Marina, the Palm Jumeirah, and past the Burj Al Arab. Enjoy the smooth 20 minute ride, with views of the brilliant blue ocean and the glittering skyscrapers of the city. Truly an experience for the ‘gram!

Stretch Limousine Ride:  Feel on top of the world with a luxury ride around Dubai in a gorgeous Stretch Limousine with your own private chauffeur. The one hour drive around Dubai will take you past the city’s highlights like the Burj Al Arab, the Burj Khalifa and the upscale Mall of the Emirates. Enjoy riding around in your luxury vehicle and catching the eye of everybody you pass, as you sit back and relax in your comfy leather seats. This is the perfect insta-worthy experience to book on your Dubai trip if you wish to impress someone special or even plan a proposal!

Chopper Ride:  Make your Dubai trip a memorable one by adding a Helicopter Tour to your Dubai sightseeing. You will take off from the Jumeirah Heliport and fly past iconic sights such as the Burj Khalifa and various other Dubai skyscrapers. Depending on the duration of the flight you have chosen, you will also be able to see sights like the Palm Jumeirah, the Jumeirah coastline, Dubai Canal, Burj Al Arab, Port Rashid, etc. A Helicopter tour of Dubai is certainly a premium add-on to your luxury Dubai holiday.

Private Yacht Ride:  If you prefer being on the water than in the air, we recommend hiring a luxury yacht for a private tour of 2 hours duration. The yacht can take a maximum of 6 persons, so it is great for a family or small group. Enjoy zipping around in your private yacht, relaxing in comfort and watching the skyline as you sip on water and soft drinks. Enjoy the different view of famous places in Dubai like the Atlantis Palm hotel and the Burj Al Arab from the water.

Full-Day Musandam Dibba Tour:  Musandam in Oman is also called the “Norway of Arabia” due to its stunning coastline. This spectacular region, with its beautiful Arabian Sea coast and spectacular Hajar mountain ranges, is just a two-hour drive away from Dubai but offers a complete contrast from Dubai’s modern urban cityscape. Drive to Musandam Dibba and board a traditional Dhow for a cruise on the sparkling waters. You can choose to just relax and enjoy the views, or go swimming and snorkelling in the clear water. The tour to Musandam Dibba can be a highlight of your Dubai package, but remember to prebook it, since it must be blocked in advance along with passport details. You can add this to your Dubai honeymoon package as well.

The list of things to do in Dubai is endless, and very soon you will realise that a single Dubai trip is not enough to fully explore this city of gold. The Towering Majesty: Burj Khalifa

Rising from the heart of Dubai like a silver needle piercing the sky, the Burj Khalifa stands as an emblem of human tenacity and vision.

Holding the record as the world's tallest structure, this colossus reaches a vertiginous height of 828 meters , dwarfing every other man-made edifice on Earth. Visitors venturing to its observation decks on the 124th and 148th floors are rewarded with panoramic vistas that are nothing short of ethereal.

On a clear day, the sweeping views extend far into the horizon, giving a bird's eye perspective of the ever-evolving metropolis below.

But the Burj Khalifa isn't just about height. It embodies the essence of Dubai – a city that dreams big and stops at nothing to realize those aspirations.

The tower's shimmering facade, resembling a lattice of diamonds at sunset, mirrors the audacity and glamour of the city it calls home.

For travelers, it's more than just a tick on their bucket list; it's an experience, a realization of what humanity can achieve when imagination meets ambition. Indeed, the Burj Khalifa is not merely a building; it's a testament to the limitless possibilities of the human spirit.

The Desert's Song: A World Beyond the Skyscrapers

As Sarah Khan, travel writer for The New York Times, aptly put it:

"Dubai is... a city that's shaped by a futuristic vision, yet rooted in a rich past. It's a place where you can ride a camel in the desert, explore spice markets and gold souks, and eat cuisines from around the world, all within a day."

Beyond the glitz and glamor of its soaring skyscrapers, Dubai offers a mosaic of experiences that beckon the traveler to dive deeper. The echoing calls to prayer, the scent of fragrant oud wafting through the air, and the intricate tapestries of traditional Emirati life are as integral to Dubai's fabric as its contemporary marvels.

Experience the serene beauty of the deserts . It's not just sand; it's a landscape that tells a story, from the time when Dubai was just a small fishing village. The desert whispers tales of Bedouin tribes, of ancient trade routes, and of the spirit of resilience that transformed this arid landscape into a global hub.

Venture out on a moonlit night, and you might just hear the rhythmic beats of traditional drums and see the fluid movements of the Tanoura dancers, painting a picture of a culture that's as vibrant today as it was centuries ago.

Dive Deeper: Unconventional Dubai Delights

Culinary wonders.

Dubai is a veritable melting pot of global flavors, a testament to its cosmopolitan flair. Begin your gastronomic journey savoring Emirati delicacies under the starlit desert sky.

Relish the aromatic Al Harees, cooked in clay pots and traditionally served during festivals, or the succulent Lamb Ouzi, a lavish dish typically reserved for grand celebrations. But Dubai's culinary landscape doesn't stop at local delights.

At Atlantis, The Palm, dine at Ossiano for an underwater experience, with exotic marine life swimming by as you savor sumptuous seafood.

From high-end restaurants with celebrity chefs at the helm to humble street food stalls churning out mouth-watering Shawarmas, every meal in Dubai is an exploration in itself.

Art Galleries in Al Fahidi District

The winding lanes of Al Fahidi District are a cultural treasure trove.

Whitewashed walls house numerous art galleries that showcase the city's burgeoning artistic talent.

Majlis Gallery, for instance, offers a peak into traditional Middle Eastern art, while the XVA Gallery delves into contemporary pieces that challenge and intrigue.

The district is a testament to how Dubai respects and nurtures its rich history while embracing modernity with open arms.

Secret Beaches

While Dubai is famed for its glitzy waterfront resorts, there's a side to its coastline that remains unsung.

These are the serene, lesser-known stretches of sandy bliss, untouched by the footprints of mass tourism.

Locals cherish these hidden havens, and they're hesitant to share their secrets. But here's a tip: strike up a conversation with Kevin Erickson if you happen to bump into him.

With a little persuasion and a shared love for sun, sand, and surf, he might just whisper the coordinates of his cherished beach spot, away from the bustling crowds—a piece of unspoiled paradise in a city of marvels.

Getting Around: Tips from Kevin Erickson

Dubai's public transportation is top-notch, but consider renting a car if you want to explore outside the city.

Remember, Friday mornings are quiet since it's the local weekend, making it perfect for sightseeing.

A Personal Conclusion

This desert jewel, once a humble trading post, has metamorphosed into a beacon of modernity and luxury, a testament to what vision, ambition, and determination can achieve. It's easy to be swayed by its glittering skyline and opulent shopping centers, but the heart of Dubai pulses in its old neighborhoods, its bustling souks, and the tales of its inhabitants.

There's a harmony here, a balance between the ancient and the ultra-modern. Where else can you find robot jockeys racing camels in the morning and attend a world-class opera in the evening? Where the echoes of age-old Bedouin chants seamlessly blend with the beats of international DJs?

The intricacies and nuances of this city are what make it extraordinary. It's a place that challenges perceptions, shatters expectations, and invites you to experience a mosaic of cultures, traditions, and innovations. As you wander through its streets, sail along its creek, or soar above its skyscrapers , you begin to grasp the true essence of Dubai.

For Kevin Erickson, and indeed many of us, Dubai is a reminder of the limitless boundaries of human creativity and the timeless allure of history.

It's more than just a stopover or a vacation spot; it's a journey through time, an adventure that leaves an indelible mark on the soul. And like all great tales, it beckons you to return, to uncover another layer, another story, in its ever-evolving narrative.

Is Dubai safe for American tourists?

Absolutely! Dubai is one of the safest cities globally, with a very low crime rate.

What's the best time to visit Dubai?

While Dubai is a year-round destination, the cooler months from November to March are most popular.

Do I need to dress conservatively in Dubai?

It's respectful to dress modestly in public areas. However, at beaches, pools, or clubs, regular western attire is acceptable.

How many days do I need to explore Dubai?

A week is ideal, but even in 3-4 days, you can cover many major attractions.

Is English spoken widely in Dubai?

Yes, English is widely spoken, especially in tourist areas and businesses.

ATM 2024: Dubai attracts 5.1 million visitors in Q1 2024, marking a 11% increase from last year

Travel & tourism.

Western European markets lead visitor influx to Dubai, followed by South Asian tourists

Stock-Dubai-Airport

Dubai: Dubai welcomed 5.18m international overnight visitors in the first three months of 2024, 11 per cent higher than the first quarter of last year, the Department of Economy and Tourism (DET) revealed.

DET has said that the Emirate saw 4.67m tourist arrivals during the same period in 2023.

Hotels in the Emirate recorded an occupancy rate of 83 per cent, ranking among the highest globally, said Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammad bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of Dubai Executive Council, wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter).

“Dubai remains committed to delivering an exceptional tourism experience, aligned with the goal of the Dubai Economic Agenda D33 to establish Dubai’s position as one of the world's top three cities for tourism,” he shared.

Issam Kazim, the CEO of Dubai’s Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM), credited the robust growth numbers to increased global airline capacities and the Emirate’s ‘diversified approach to boosting its tourism numbers’.

“We always talked about Dubai being home to different nationalities. But we’re also attracting tourists from across the globe,” he said.

According to DET, the majority of Dubai's tourists, totalling 1.138 million arrivals, hailed from Western European markets, followed by 869,000 South Asian visitors.

About 817,000 visitors were recorded from countries belonging to the CIS States and Eastern Europe, 605,000 from the MENA region, 664,000 from the GCC region, and 344,000 from the Americas.

“For us, the opportunities exist from a point-to-point perspective where we’ve seen great growth. But we are constantly leveraging the connectivity and the role Dubai plays in connecting the rest of the world through Dubai International Airport (DXB),” explained Kazim.

DXB retained its crown as the world’s busiest international hub for the 10th year in a row, according to Airports Council International, catering to 86.9 million passengers in 2023. The world’s busiest passenger hub is expected to announce its Q1 2024 figures sometime in the coming days.

“So it shows there is a transit opportunity, a chance to get people through the doors for the first time and create repeat visitors,” said Kazim. He added that about 25 per cent of the visitors in Dubai are repeat visitors. “By repeat, I mean they come back to Dubai again and again within 12 months. So that is again the number that solidifies Dubai’s position regarding quality of service,” he added.

Kazim also said the opening of the new passenger terminal planned for Al Maktoum International, also known as Dubai World Central (DWC), is expected to boost visitor numbers and investments.

“This airport aims to attract visitors to Dubai and facilitate business travel and logistics. These developments align well with our strategy to attract more visitors, new residents, and businesses to Dubai,” he stated.

Dubai maintains tourism growth momentum with 5.18 million international overnight visitors in first quarter of 2024

06 May, 2024

tourist book dubai

Dubai welcomed 5.18 million international overnight visitors from January to March 2024, an 11% rise over the 4.67 million tourist arrivals during the same period in 2023, according to data published by Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism (DET) at the 31st edition of Arabian Travel Market (ATM).

Following a milestone year in 2023, with Dubai receiving a record 17.15 million international overnight visitors, the city’s tourism industry is building on the momentum in the first quarter of the year, driven by the visionary leadership of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. This growth also aligns with the ambitious goals of the Dubai Economic Agenda, D33, to further consolidate Dubai’s position as a leading global city for business and leisure. Commending the achievement, His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of The Executive Council of Dubai, said: “The number of visitors in the first quarter of 2024 indicates that Dubai is on course for another standout performance this year after the emirate received a record number of visitors last year, with international visitors reaching 17.15 million.

This will ensure that the tourism sector continues its growth journey in line with the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and in line with the objectives of the Dubai Economic Agenda (D33), which aims to strengthen its position as a leading global city for business and leisure.”

Visionary leadership

His Highness added: “Integrating diverse aspects, the blueprint behind Dubai’s success as a tourist destination is based on the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid and it has gained the trust of visitors from around the world. Effective promotion efforts showcase the best of Dubai for tourists, but it has also invested for years in developing world-class infrastructure that serves citizens, residents, and visitors alike. The performance of various sectors has been enhanced in line with the highest international standards and best practices with the ultimate goal of becoming the smartest, most advanced and agile city, serving everyone who resides on its land or visits it as an honourable guest.”

Sheikh Hamdan praised the efforts of the DET in successfully promoting the emirate at a global level and showcasing the distinguished experience that it is keen to provide visitors, noting that its well-considered strategies are clearly reflected in the steady growth in tourist numbers. His Highness also expressed his appreciation for the efforts of all strategic partners in the private sector for their contributions in highlighting the attractiveness of Dubai and emphasised the importance of strengthening cooperation between the public and private sectors to ensure that the emirate continued to retain its lead on the global tourism map in coming years as well.

His Highness stated: “Ensuring the highest levels of tourist satisfaction translates into each visitor becoming an ambassador for Dubai, carrying to the world the image of a city that spares no effort for the happiness and comfort of its guests. We affirm our commitment to continue working to further enhance the capabilities of our tourism sector and diversify options we put at the disposal of our guests, ensuring that these always exceed their expectations. This is part of an ambitious economic strategy with a human element at its heart, the goal being to live up to every individual’s aspirations and requirements at multiple levels.”

Dubai’s exceptional performance reinforced global recognition for the destination, having begun 2024 by being named the No.1 global destination for an unprecedented third successive year in the Tripadvisor Travellers’ Choice Awards, the first city to achieve this unique accolade. Major industry events The rise in international tourists during Q1 is the result of city-wide strategies established across vital pillars in the tourism sector, including sustainability, accessibility, entrepreneurship, and innovation, while various other key factors contributed to visitation growth. The city hosted several major industry events, such as Arab Health, Gulfood and the Dubai International Boat Show, while new hotel openings included The Lana, Dorchester Collection’s first property in the Middle East; SIRO One Za’abeel, Dubai’s first fitness hotel; Marriott Marquis Dubai; and Hilton Dubai Creek Hotel & Residences. Catering to all budgets and preferences, Dubai’s diverse offerings are constantly evolving, supported by world-class infrastructure, exceptional service at all touchpoints, and continuous collaboration between the government and private sectors.

His Excellency Helal Saeed Almarri, Director General of Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism (DET), said: “Under the leadership of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, the emirate’s continued record-breaking visitation performance demonstrates the sustained commitment to delivering on our long-term D33 Agenda goals, and further solidifies the pivotal role the tourism and hospitality sectors play in propelling Dubai’s positive growth trajectory.

“In addition to our high-performing tourism ecosystem, these figures also continue to be spurred by upswings in the number of international businesses setting up, existing companies expanding business lines and catchment footprint from Dubai, a very healthy MICE sector, and an influx of new talent relocating to the city, demonstrating the wide-reaching and synergistic impact of a successful and well calibrated D33 economic blueprint.”

His Excellency Issam Kazim, CEO of the Dubai Corporation for Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DCTCM), said: “Inspired by the visionary leadership of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, and guided by the objectives of the D33 Agenda, Dubai is committed to further elevating standards across the emirate and expanding its tourism offering with innovative and distinctive world-class infrastructure, experiences and attractions.

“We will continue to drive strong global and market-specific campaigns, collaborating with our key domestic and international stakeholders and partners and taking a diversified marketing approach to promote Dubai to audiences around the world, exciting and inspiring potential new and repeat visitors. The commitment of our partners to this shared vision, including through the delivery of the highest levels of service across all consumer touchpoints, is instrumental in making Dubai the best city to visit, live and work in. We look forward to maintaining the industry’s success throughout summer and the rest of the year.”

Key source markets

Dubai’s diversified approach, built on bespoke strategies and activities in more than 80 markets, helped maintain its position as a first-choice travel destination for visitors both from key traditional and emerging markets. From January to March, the Western Europe region was Dubai’s biggest source market with 1.138 million arrivals, a 22% overall share, followed by South Asia with 869,000 visitors (17%) and CIS and Eastern Europe with 817,000 (16%). From a regional perspective, the GCC and MENA were fourth and fifth, accounting for 664,000 (13%) and 605,000 (12%) arrivals respectively. The North-East Asia and South-East Asia region recorded 470,000 arrivals into Dubai (a 9% share), followed by the Americas 344,000 (7%), Africa 202,000 (4%) and Australasia 70,000 (1%).

Hotels and hospitality

From January to March this year, Dubai’s hotels maintained a room occupancy rate of 83%, a notable achievement given the 2% year-on-year increase in overall room supply to more than 152,000. Occupied room nights increased by 2%, with 11.2 million at the end of Q1 2024, compared to 10.98 million in 2023. Average Daily Rate (ADR) rose to AED638 during Q1, marking a notable increase of 5% compared to the same period in 2023, while Revenue Per Available Room (RevPAR) increased by 4% compared to last year, from AED504 to AED527. This performance clearly indicates city hoteliers are maintaining competitive prices and revenues amid high levels of occupancy. Total available rooms in Dubai reached 152,162 by the end of March, up from 148,877 rooms in March 2023, while the number of establishments stood at 832 at the end of the first quarter, compared to 814 during the same period last year.

Dubai had a substantial total of 96,484 hotel rooms across five-star and four-star establishments, representing a significant 64% share of the overall hotel rooms in the city, with average room occupancy typically ranging from 81% to 84%. One- to three-star hotels had a 19% share of Dubai’s overall hotel market, with the category comprising 29,100 rooms and a commendable 82% room occupancy rate. The hotel apartments segment boasted a total of 26,578 keys at the end of the first quarter and maintained a strong average room occupancy ranging from 84% to 85%.

Sustainability initiatives

With the UAE’s ‘Year of Sustainability’ extending into 2024, Dubai continues its commitment to sustainability by supporting global and country-wide objectives. Dubai’s tourism and hospitality sectors are spearheading this drive, with programmes and initiatives demonstrating the city’s ecotourism strategy.

Pioneering initiatives include those under the Dubai Can umbrella. The popular ‘Refill for Life’ campaign, promoting the use of reusable bottles and encouraging people to refill via 50 water fountains established throughout the city, has already seen the reduction in the usage of an equivalent of more than 18 million 500ml single-use plastic water bottles in just two years since its launch. A second Dubai Can initiative, Dubai Reef, is the world’s largest marine reef development project and part of the city’s efforts to increase fish stocks and boost marine biodiversity. His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed recently inaugurated the landmark project’s pilot reef modules.

Entrepreneurship spur

DET is creating new pathways to growth beyond traditional tourism, through investment, entrepreneurship, and attracting global talent. Offering vocational training and educational programmes, Dubai College of Tourism (DCT), part of DET, is committed to developing a skilled workforce to support the growth of the tourism sector. Dubai also offers entrepreneurs and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) a platform for ease of set-up and scale. Dubai SME provides financial support, mentorship, and resources to emerging entrepreneurs while Intelak Hub is the region’s only start-up platform dedicated to the travel, tourism, and aviation sectors.

Global leisure hub

Dubai’s gastronomic offering, catering to the diverse tastes of residents and visitors alike, continues to expand and is a cornerstone of the city’s tourism strategy. The city’s position as a global culinary capital was further established with 18 Dubai-based restaurants included in the 2024 MENA’s 50 Best Restaurants list, with four of them taking the top four places.

The ongoing expansion of the cruise sector is also seeing significant benefits for Dubai. In March this year, regional maritime and tourism authorities formalised the Cruise Arabia alliance – a strategic partnership that will promote the Arabian Gulf as a cruise ship destination globally and collaborate to enhance the cruise experience for passengers, attract more cruise liners, improve infrastructure at ports, and drive economic growth in the cruise tourism sector. Dubai has been a significant player in the Cruise Arabia alliance, working closely with its partners to create interconnected and integrated regional cruise services.

Dubai’s status as a global entertainment hub is being bolstered by new attractions and a year-round calendar of business, leisure, and sporting events, which continue to attract international tourists. The city’s newest major opening is Real Madrid World, an exciting theme park within Dubai Parks and Resorts, and the first to be operating under the branding of the world-famous football club. The opening of Real Madrid World follows the multi-year agreement signed in October last year between DET and Real Madrid, which will create growth opportunities for both institutions and support the D33 Agenda. Meanwhile, organised by Dubai Festivals and Retail Establishment (DFRE), some of Dubai’s biggest annual events were held during the first quarter of the year, including Dubai Shopping Festival. Currently taking place across the city until 12 May is the Dubai Food Festival, one of Dubai’s flagship events and a celebration of the city’s vibrant culinary scene.

The UAE's reach to draw tourists at Arabian Travel Market

When the region plots out the future of travel, it comes to dubai and the uae.

One of the Middle East's annual big-ticket industry events, the Arabian Travel Market (ATM), takes place this week in Dubai, while the UAE continues to attract visitors from around the world. Just this year, Dubai was ranked first in the Top 100 City Destinations Index 2023 by Euromonitor International.

This comes against a backdrop of the world recovering from Covid-19, high inflation rates affecting travel, and turmoil in the region. Although the global travel market continues to r ecover, few can doubt that the dark clouds that have hovered over the Middle East since the Israel-Gaza war broke out in October of last year have taken a toll on tourism and business travel alike in countries like Egypt and Jordan.

Gathering the industry’s stakeholders to work through some of its challenges, however, is part of what the ATM is about. This year, the number of exhibitors is up to 2,300, and they will attend a range of panel discussions about subjects such as strengthening the sector’s resilience, future proofing it from global economic disruptions and reinforcing security.

By the time the event concludes, participants will have heard from 200 speakers, on subjects such as innovation and entrepreneurship (this year's theme is “empowering innovation: transforming travel through entrepreneurship"), and about 41,000 people from 165 countries would have attended some of these sessions, concluded significant deals and drawn up business plans for the next year.

The ATM provides an important opportunity for destinations to update the world on their latest touristic developments, whether it’s Abu Dhabi displaying the variety of experiences the emirate has to offer; Sharjah putting forwards its innovation projects; Saudi Arabia attracting visitors to its lesser known leisure attractions; or Oman's Ministry of Heritage and Tourism presenting the best of the country's tourist sites.

While the UAE and the GCC are desirable destinations on their own, with much to offer in terms of retail, heritage and hospitality, they become all the more of a draw to travellers in the current context as they remain untouched by fears of war.

For those from growing markets such as China and India, the UAE and GCC are appealing repeat destinations that are not too far, and have all of the comforts.

The situation for other parts of the Middle East is more challenging. The Israel-Gaza war stretches on, its many, varied repercussions become even clearer. Beyond the tragic and needless loss of lives, the economic effects of the war have not been contained to the war zone. Many of these have been felt in neighbouring countries. One consequence has been the disrupted livelihoods, an impact of the dip in tourism to countries in the Levant, including Lebanon and Jordan, and Palestinian territories especially East Jerusalem . A ceasefire and permanent peace would ultimately bring back the tourists to those historically rich places with abundant natural beauty.

As when travel rebounded after Covid-19, there will be be plenty of lessons in how to ride over the turbulence that hit livelihoods of tour operators and employees of the hotel and airline industries due to the conflict. While countries can learn from each other's strategies to cope with economic distress or geopolitical conflict, and help tourism, we can also all get behind the idea of travelling to new places and broadening horizons.

Dubai says Q1 international visitors up 11% this year

tourist book dubai

The city reported 5.18 million international overnight visitors in Q1 2024

Kudakwashe Muzoriwa

Dubai reported a record number of tourist arrivals in the first quarter of the year, cementing the emirate’s position as a leading global tourism hub amid a rebound in travel post-pandemic.

The city reported 5.18 million international overnight visitors in Q1 2024, up 11 per cent from the first quarter of the previous year, according to the latest data from the Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism (DET).

Following a milestone year in 2023, with Dubai receiving a record 17.15 million international overnight visitors, the city’s tourism industry is building on the momentum in the first quarter of the year.

“The number of visitors in the first quarter of 2024 indicates that Dubai is on course for another standout performance this year after the emirate received a record number of visitors last year,” said Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of The Executive Council of Dubai.

“This will ensure that the tourism sector continues its growth journey in line with the objectives of D33, which aims to strengthen its position as a leading global city for business and leisure.”

DET said the latest figures aligns with the ambitious goals of the Dubai Economic Agenda (D33) to further consolidate the emirate’s position as a leading global city for business and leisure.

Dubai stands at the forefront of global tourism

Meanwhile, Dubai’s diversified approach, built on bespoke strategies and activities in more than 80 markets, helped maintain its position as a first-choice travel destination for visitors both from key traditional and emerging markets.

Earlier in January, the emirate secured the top spot in the Tripadvisor Travellers’ Choice Best of the Best 2024 awards for the third consecutive year, making it the first city to achieve this remarkable milestone in succession.

From January to March, Western Europe was the city’s biggest source market with 1.14 million arrivals, a 22 per cent overall share, followed by South Asia with 869,000 visitors (17 per cent) and Commonwealth of Independent States and Eastern Europe with 817,000 (16 per cent).

From a regional perspective, the GCC and MENA were fourth and fifth, accounting for 664,000 (13 per cent) and 605,000 (12 per cent) arrivals, respectively.

The North-East Asia and South-East Asia region recorded 470,000 arrivals into Dubai (a 9 per cent share), followed by the Americas 344,000 (7 pe rcent), Africa 202,000 (4 per cent) and Australasia 70,000 (1 per cent).

From January to March, average daily hotel rates came in at Dhs638, a 5 per cent increase, compared to the same period in 2023, while revenue per available Room rose by 4 per cent to Dhs527.

Dubai’s hotels maintained a room occupancy rate of 83 per cent, a significant achievement given the 2 per cent year-on-year increase in overall room supply to 152,162 by the end of March.
