Street parties, races, dining and more: Your guide to the 2024 Santos Tour Down Under
Dig out your Lycra – the Santos Tour Down Under is coming to town, and it’s set to be bigger and better than ever before! To get everyone in gear for the largest cycling event in the southern hemisphere, here’s a guide to seven highlights you won’t want to miss (street parties included).
An unbeatable event
The Santos Tour Down Under (TDU) is the largest cycling event in the southern hemisphere and the first on the elite international Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) WorldTour calendar each year. This means the race represents the highest level of international cycling competition and attracts the best cyclists in the world. The greats – both men and women – will once again descend on Adelaide from 12-21 January 2024, to battle it out on roads through the city and surrounding regions in front of massive, cheering crowds.
It’s not just about the pro-racing though. The TDU features a range of related activities, participation rides, community celebrations and live entertainment. Basically, it’s a massive party across South Australia that everyone can enjoy – even people who are a bit wobbly on a bike.
A word from a cycling legend
Santos Tour Down Under Race Director Stuart O’Grady OAM says no other race in the world compares to the “unbeatable” TDU. He should know, since he’s competed in most of them and won twice, including the inaugural race in 1999. Born in Adelaide, this home-grown hero won a gold medal in cycling at the Athens 2004 Olympic Games before going on to compete in the Tour de France 17 times – finishing second overall four times.
Stuart – who designs new TDU race routes each year – says the 2024 routes will test the elite international cyclists like never before.
“South Australian events have been bigger and better than ever this year,” he says. “We look forward to continuing the momentum into 2024 with the Santos Tour Down Under.”
The new race format will see women’s racing held on the first weekend to enable even more South Australians to get out and see elite cyclists in action. This follows 2023’s coup when the TDU became the first women’s race in the southern hemisphere to become a UCI Women’s WorldTour event – the highest level of cycling competition.
The economic impact
The elite level of the TDU race, combined with its huge festival of associated events, means it’s a key economic driver for the state’s tourism industry.
2023 was a bumper one for South Australian tourism, with visitors spending more than ever before. As one of our state’s biggest events, the TDU has contributed to this record spend, with the 2023 event creating 776 full-time jobs and injecting $66.5 million into our economy.
Around 780,000 people attended the 2023 race over its 10 days, with tens of thousands of visitors pouring into Adelaide and regional SA – a boon for businesses along the race routes. In 2024, fans at the TDU will once again be able to enjoy not only cycling, but also South Australia’s food, wine and regional tourism destinations. These include the River Murray communities hit hard by the floods last Christmas.
How to TDU – a guide to the highlights
Amid all the TDU heat and hype it can sometimes be hard knowing where to start. Don’t sweat. We’ve pulled together a comprehensive guide to the 2024 TDU highlights.
- Men’s and Women’s Road Race
This year, Race Director Stuart O’Grady OAM has designed some especially exciting new routes, featuring huge climbs, beachside sprints and a street circuit. Cycling fans can enjoy a combined 1116 kilometres of action over 10 days through Adelaide, the Fleurieu Peninsula, Barossa, Adelaide Hills and the Riverland.
It’s all free to watch, and our tip is to bag your viewing spot along the race route at least an hour before the race passes through. That way you can relax and be entertained while you wait for the spectacle, mascots and giveaways of the colourful Tour Parade, which passes through 30 minutes ahead of the riders. Race route details and maps here .
- Go premium!
This one’s for the people who appreciate air-conditioned transport and wine tasting with their TDU spectator experience. The ‘Detours’ and ‘Breakaway Zones’ packages are your ticket to exclusive access and gourmet experiences. With VIP seating and meet-and-greets with cycling legends, these curated packages offer the ultimate blend of race action and premium dining. Get closer to the action, the entertainment and the athletes, exploring one of SA’s wine regions along the way. Premium options and bookings here .
- City of Adelaide Tour Village
The free City of Adelaide Tour Village in Victoria Square/Tarntanyangga will once again be the TDU festival hub, with 10 days of free fun. There’ll be panel discussions with riders, the race live streamed on the big screen, and a new ‘recovery zone’ for fans to cool off with ice baths, physio and cryotherapy. There’s also the southern hemisphere’s largest bike expo, plus daily knock-off hour drinks and a whole lot of South Australian food vendors serving up tasty treats. More info and the village events calendar here .
- Participation events
If you really want to feel the rush of the TDU, jump on a bike yourself for the best seat in the house. Participation events in 2024 cater for riders of every age and fitness. For recreational cyclists, there are group rides leaving from the tour village daily.
For the more hardcore Lycra-lovers, there’s the Garmin Willunga Hill Time Trial. This pits riders against the clock on three kilometres of a seriously steep hill climb, famous for its toughness. The new RADL GRVL event, a race partly held on unsealed roads, is another one for the serious athletes. Then there’s the loud, hectic and quirky Oakley Car Park Climb – free to enter and featuring a bar and DJ at the finish. Information about how to join the rides here .
- Street parties
Councils hosting TDU stage starts and finishes have pulled out all the stops for some epic celebrations in 2024. Jetty Road will come alive with the Glenelg Ice Cream Festival. Live music, street theatre and circus performers will create a carnival atmosphere for the Barossa Loop de Loop party at Tanunda, plus Unley Gala is back, baby! This much-loved event will take over King William Road with food, wine, fashion and live entertainment. Last held in 2020 when it attracted 20,000 visitors, the Unley Gala street party is the longest running event associated with the TDU, generating almost $1 million for the local economy. All the parties’ dates and details here .
- UCI Para-cycling Road World Cup
In a first for SA, the 2024 TDU’s festival of events will include a round of the UCI Para-cycling Road World Cup. More than 300 of the world’s best para-cycling athletes will converge on Adelaide to take part from 13-17 January. For many it’s a vital step on their road to qualify for the 2024 Paris Paralympic Games. Fans will be able to cheer on para-cycling athletes as they compete on the 1.35km TDU Adelaide city track before the event moves to The Bend Motorsport Park near Tailem Bend for two days.
More information here .
For families with up-and-coming cycling superstars to entertain, Saturday 13 January is your day. The program of free fun includes the chance for children to learn new cycling skills (and road safety) from experts, make and enjoy delicious bliss balls, meet their cycling heroes, and get their bikes on the track for the Family Day Ride. There’ll also be face painting, balloon artists, prize giveaways and a poster competition to keep the kids entertained all afternoon at the City of Adelaide Tour Village.

Up to 100,000 people are expected to turn out at parties on King William Rd at Unley, Prospect Rd at Prospect, Jetty Rd at Glenelg and The Parade at Norwood, injecting millions of dollars to the local economies.
Unley will get the wheels rolling next Monday evening, when more than 30,000 flock to the trendy King William Rd retail strip for fashion parades, gourmet food and entertainment.
The Unley Gourmet Gala — now in its 17th year and the TDU street party pioneer — will run from 4pm-10pm the night before Stage 1 of the race sets off from King William Rd on Tuesday morning.
The party may mark a final fling for the gala on King William Rd, with Unley Council considering moving it, and the following day’s TDU stage start, to Unley or Goodwood roads next year.
“We will send an expression of interest to host a race start in 2018 — but we are yet to discuss from which road,” Unley Mayor Lachlan Clyne said.
“Right now, the only priority is that council’s resources are 100 per cent focused on delivering the best event for 2017.”
Prospect will take the party baton on Tuesday evening, when Prospect Rd comes alive under the theme of “Our Colourful Community”.
The Tourrific Prospect party, which attracted 18,000 people and injected about $500,000 to traders last year, returns this year despite the street not hosting a TDU stage start.
“While being an associated event of the tour is extremely important, with or without a stage start, Tourrific Prospect has become an iconic Adelaide event in its own right and has remained extremely popular with local businesses and residents, year in, year out,” Prospect Council chief executive Cate Hart said.
Jetty Rd traders are expecting more than 30,000 people to turn out at the Glenelg street party on Wednesday night.
Last year’s Glenelg street party attracted 30,000 people, up from 15,000 in 2015, and added an estimated $3.4 million to the local economy.
The street party, on the eve of the tour’s Stage 3 start, will feature fashion parades, roving entertainers, pop-up bars and Chinese, Italian, Mexican and Spanish food.
Attitudes Boutique sales assistant Gia Terranova said the shop will showcase its new summer collection on the catwalk.
“There’s always such a great vibe around Glenelg at this time of year, especially with the Tour Down Under, which will be great,” she said.
Norwood will close out the string of street parties, with an estimated 10,000 people to fill The Parade on Thursday evening.
A further 50,000 people are expected to visit the Tour Village at Victoria Square over nine days once it opens on Saturday.
The Tour Down Under last year injected $49.6 million into the state’s visitor economy and 613 full time equivalent jobs, and is expected to do similar this year.

Moscow Metro
The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.
What is the kremlin in russia?
The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.
And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.
During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.
There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:
From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.
At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.
According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.
The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.
Coffee Ring
The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.
Zodiac Metro
According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.
Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.
Paleontological finds
Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

Politics latest: Labour's new MP Natalie Elphicke apologises - as Cameron says defection 'says more about Starmer'
The fallout is continuing from the shock defection of MP Natalie Elphicke from the Conservatives over to Labour. She has now released a statement apologising for supporting her ex-husband, who was her predecessor as MP for Dover, after his sexual assault conviction.

Labour MP Natalie Elphicke has apologised for comments she made supporting her ex-husband after he was convicted of sexual assault, following criticism from her new party colleagues.
Concerns had been raised about comments she made after Charlie Elphicke, her predecessor as MP for Dover, was convicted in 2020 of sexually assaulting two women and sentenced to two years in prison.
At the time, she said in an interview with The Sun that being "attractive" and "attracted to women" had made him an "easy target".
Labour said yesterday "all those issues have been dealt with previously both in parliament and in public".
But in a new statement, Ms Elphicke said the period was an "incredibly stressful and difficult one for me as I learned more about the person I thought I knew".
She added: "I know it was far harder for the women who had to relive their experiences and give evidence against him.
"I have previously, and do, condemn his behaviour towards other women and towards me. It was right that he was prosecuted and I'm sorry for the comments that I made about his victims.
"It is vital that women can have confidence in the criminal justice system and our rates of prosecution and conviction are far too low as a country.
"Keir Starmer's mission to halve male violence against women and girls is critical and I wanted to take the opportunity to express my explicit support for Labour colleagues working to realise it."
Labour's new MP Natalie Elphicke has today apologised for defending her ex-husband after he was convicted of sexual assault.
After former Tory MP Charlie Elphicke was convicted in 2020, she said in an interview with The Sun that being "attractive" and "attracted to women" had made him an "easy target".
Those comments were one of several reasons why her defection from the Conservatives yesterday made some Labour MPs feel uncomfortable.
Our political correspondent Rob Powell says an apology released this afternoon ( see 13.27 post ) essentially retracting the controversial remarks likely came because the Labour leadership "felt it needed to be done because of the blowback they were getting".
Many in the party had found her comments "pretty unacceptable" and there's now some "political management going on" in the party.
But Rob says it's "unlikely to change too many minds" in the short-term.
Labour MPs and supports who feel uneasy will likely remain so, while Conservatives are trying to use the defection to criticise Sir Keir Starmer.
Lord Cameron, the foreign secretary, earlier said it shows the Labour leader "has no values and doesn't stand for anything", notes Rob.
We just discussed the UK media regulator's new rules for social media companies designed to keep children safe online with the technology minister, Michelle Donelan.
The new Ofcom rules include age verification and reformulating algorithms to keep children away from "toxic" content. But parents whose children have died as a result of exposure to harmful content have called the rules an "insult".
You can explore this more on the Sky News Daily, on which Niall Paterson is joined by technology correspondent at the Financial Times Cristina Criddle to discuss what the measures are and how they can be delivered.
Niall is also joined by John Carr, who is on the government's principal advisory body for online safety and security for children, to discuss the challenges of enforcing the rules and if they go far enough to protect children.
Over a year ago, Rishi Sunak made five pledges for voters to judge him on.
The prime minister met his promise to halve inflation by the end of 2023.
But with the general election approaching, how is Mr Sunak doing on delivering his other promises?
You can see the progress for yourself below:
One point made by several Labour figures after the party welcomed Conservative defector Natalie Elphicke yesterday was the continued suspension of veteran MP Diane Abbott.
The MP for Hackney and Stoke Newington was suspended from the parliamentary Labour Party last year for suggesting Jewish people face prejudice similar to "redheads" rather than racism.
She later apologised but has not had the whip restored.
Ms Elphicke's welcoming to the party by Sir Keir Starmer has raised eyebrows because she was one of the more right-wing Tory MPs, and caused controversy with some of her previous comments.
Ms Abbott has now responded on social media, referring to a Guardian article headlined "Natalie Elphicke's queasy welcome shows Labour will turn no one away".
"Not sure I can confirm this headline," said Ms Abbott.
Ms Abbott and Sir Keir were colleagues in Jeremy Corbyn's shadow cabinet.

John Swinney has axed the post of minister for independence from his ministerial team.
The role, the first of its kind, was created last year by then first minister Humza Yousaf.
Jamie Hepburn, who previously held the Scottish government post, has now taken over from George Adam as minister for parliamentary business.
Earlier on Thursday, SNP MP Alyn Smith appeared to confirm during a radio interview that the role had been "subsumed" into Angus Robertson's constitution, external affairs and culture brief.

NHS data released today ( see 10.20 post ) paints a pretty mixed picture.
There are gains in key areas, but many targets are still being missed.
The government wants improvement in two particular areas.
Firstly, it has tasked health leaders with bringing cancer waiting times back below pre-pandemic levels.
The 62-day backlog (the target time it takes for people with suspected cancer having a confirmed diagnosis and to start treatment) is a top priority and there have been improvements for consecutive months.
Another focus for improvement is the faster diagnosis standards and here too there have been gains.
This has been achieved by giving extra support to struggling NHS trusts identified through a tier ranking and the deployment of mobile diagnostics and screening services to targeted areas.
But there are still too many patients waiting longer than two months to start treatment for cancer, after an urgent GP referral.
The target is 15% and the actual number is double that.
And many cancer experts will argue that pre-pandemic levels set a low bar because the country’s cancer detection and treatment services were already far behind comparable health care systems.
The improvements are welcomed, but there is still some way to go.
House of Commons leader Penny Mordaunt is getting good value out of yesterday's defection of Tory MP Natalie Elphicke.
Having used it to suggest Labour's Keir Starmer doesn't represent the real values of his party (see previous post), she's now suggested he "wouldn't be interested" in her defection as she's "too left-wing".
She made the quip during Business Questions, when her fellow Tory MP Ian Liddell-Grainger said "(Ms Mordaunt) I feel will fall off her chair no doubt as long as she doesn't defect", as he asked for a debate on local authority decision-making.
Ms Mordaunt replied: "Can I reassure (Mr Liddell-Grainger) that I am not about to defect to the opposition benches. They wouldn't be interested in me, I'm too left-wing."
Eyebrows have been raised over Ms Elphicke's defection, as she was a hardline Brexiteer and one of the Tories' more right-wing MPs.
Ms Mordaunt has been tipped as a potential replacement for Rishi Sunak.
While the foreign secretary was delivering a speech on national security, mooted Tory leadership hopeful Penny Mordaunt has launched an unusual attack on Sir Keir Starmer.
She turned her fire on the Labour leader in the Commons following yesterday's shock defection of Natalie Elphicke, who had been one of the more right-wing Conservative MPs.
In a lengthy list of metaphors addressing recent Tory defections to the opposition party, Ms Mordaunt compared Sir Keir to a crab.
"What it (the defections) has exposed is a pattern of behaviour from the leader of the opposition," she said.
She said they are part of an attempt by Sir Keir to "disguise" his "true form" like the "decorator crab".
While such crabs hide themselves with other creatures and seaweed, Labour's leader uses "St George's flags, his Gunners (Arsenal) season ticket and several programmes from the Last Night of the Proms".
Having "channelled Margaret Thatcher" and expelled former leader Jeremy Corbyn, his old boss, she said "the leader of the opposition is the decorator crab of these benches, desperate to show that he's not really leading the Labour Party at all".
Scotland's new first minister John Swinney is on his feet at First Minister's Questions, just a day after he formally took the top job.
He received a loud applause from those on the SNP side of the chamber as he took to his feet, facing off against Scottish Labour's Anas Sarwar.
